The rod.

Your eyes snap open, and it all comes rushing back.

REMEMBER!

"No..."

Silver hand throws back his hood, a skull where a face should be, grinning with empty eyes and pointed like a rat's. "No, I... I didn't know... I didn't know!" And it feels like you're there again, so small, so weak, so ignorant, so innocent. Tears sting your cheeks as you squirm away from him.

"NO! PLEASE, PLEASE, STOP! PUT IT AWAY!"

YOU DID THIS

YOU KILLED US

WITH THIS SEALED LORD

YOU DESTROYED US

AND WE WILL DESTROY YOU

Anyone think we should get some post traumatic help after this? I mean, they are actively using this shit against us, we need to learn to accept what happened and get over it so that they cannot guilt us anymore.

I mean, really, this is not our fault in the slightest.

You push yourself to your feet as you shove the memories away, staggering as you face Silverhand. You can feel it, in your gut, in your hands.

It wasn't your fault.

It was NEVER your fault. You shake your head, tossing aside your ruined spear like you did you old, innocent self.

"I'm sorry. Who are you talking about?" you ask, too-sweetly, as you take a stance. The creature is stunned for a moment, and then there's a cry from the alleyway.

His stance, even when running, is perfect, this one time. His grip is excellently done, his swing has form even you couldn't manage. A thousand and one tiny perfections all unite in a blessed swing, glowing blue from a radiant blade that severs Silverhand's namesake and sends the Sealed Lord flying through the air, four pairs of eyes following it...

The rod sails through the air, and Micheal snatches it out of the air as Silverhand roars in fury.

--- --- ---

You are now Micheal and you are scared witless.

Okay, so it was pretty cool to get in there and save the damsel but now you've a damnable DEMON on your back chasing you.

And you're holding a thing that probably could kill everyone in the city.

Think, Micheal, think!

You remind yourself that that strike was one-in-a-million. Probably shouldn't risk it again!

Time to run like a caught Coyo! Your feet scramble on cobble as you gain purchase and sprint.

Silverhand unfurls his wings, and takes to the skies to follow you. Well, you forgot to account for that, but you start to lead him in a wide circle. Annelin can and has dealt with the bastard, you just need to give her some time.

You grin, as you turn a corner. You've never felt so proud of a bodyguard before, even - yes, you admit - even a little attracted to her, mostly those rough, unpolished eyes and manner. Like a breath of fresh -

He lands before you.

GIVE IT BACK.

>Run the other way

BE WARY OF ANY SPELLS.
He did a heat beam yesterday, and turning our back means we'll be particularly vulnerable.
>>
>>29878194
>We were trying to kite him.

Still retarded as fuck. We have 2 extremely competent bodyguards and maybe a good Magus. Why would we need to kite him or lead him anywhere? We should have just let our bodyguards get between us and him, meaning retreating from the battle but not too far in case that someone can help us if we are attacked.

I didn't expect wings but I did expect that he would have some back-up, meaning that if the Prince runs away too far, somebody else gets on his ass.

Ja'an has wings at least, maybe he'll come around to help us.
>>
>>29878361
I was under the impression that he was between us and everyone else, so we were running to get out the way while they handle him. Now that he is in front of us, maybe we can run back to the group.

"Are you insane?!" she asks as you return, panting. Ja'an snatches the Sealed Lord from your hands, and flies away as you pant. You're thrown down and behind Annelin as she raises her shield, ray of heat missing the demon just barely as it ricochets from the shield.

You are now Annelin again.

You raise your boot, and slam it into to his skull, again and again. You feel it crunch underfoot, over and over and over. It wasn't your fault! You didn't have a choice! You can feel it shatter under your boot and you begin to crush the shards stabbing at his chest with your spear, goring it with a splintered haft, stabbing over and over. You can't stop yourself, even as the tears begin to flow.

You didn't want to kill them. You didn't want to hurt anyone. But it's all you can do, it's all you're good at, is hurting people, and the realization of that lead you to the Arena. You watch as the flesh and blood and skull coalesce into a diamond, and you continue to hammer at it, tiny cracks appearing, your tears dribbling on the cobbles as slam your gauntlets into it, grinding it into dust. Finally, the dust scatters, gauntlets scraping against the earth, and the cool stone against your cheek.

Gentle hands pull you up into a warm hug. Micheal is there.

"So... What does that have to do with the rods?"

"Well..." he says, "Those soulstones are the demon trying to gather souls to reform themselves." he says. The strength of the pull is equal to the strength of the demon. So..."

"So if someone were to store a Demon Lord soulstone inside something..." Micheal says, his face a mask of horror.

"Then opening it would result in something like what happened to those Appals. However, since a fragment of their souls remained, they were able to become Demons. And the only thing they remembered was your name and what you did." Ja'al states. "...Probably. Sealed Lords are basically weaponizations of this demonic soul-feasting. And the containers can be keyed to all sorts of things - age, virginity, race, names." he says.

You frown.
"So how did they get to me, and now?"

"Someone wants you dead enough to research your past and summon these demons." Ja'al states. "But I've no idea who."

HOLD THE FUCKING PHONE.

Ja'al is the one doing this. Points:
-Daemonolgy is meant to be incredibly rare and expensive. He's the only one with the know-how.
-Knows about the Appals being soul-drained. Who the hell told him this?
-Silverhand SHOWS UP AT HIS DOOR. WHY, AND HOW DID HE FIND OUT?

Conclusion:
Ja'al summoned a Lord accidentally, with the intention of killing the king/prince for the Kingdoms racism. The Demon demanded that he be allowed to avenge his memory, which was of his own race of Appals being soul-drained by the iron rod - something which no one seemed to know what was.
>>
>>29881260
"Congratulations." you say with a smile. "But don't let your nerves take you. Loosen up and go with the flow." you say with a nod. Micheal agrees.

Ja'al relaxes a little, smiling to himself. You have to admit, when he allows himself to be, he's at least somewhat cute.
"I'll look into these things." he says, "You guys should focus on getting prepared for things."

You both leave to go to the smithy, the Appal looking up at you. You have the spear, and the shattered bits in a bag.

"I can reforge. I can make a magical weapon from remains for partial cost. I can take the scrap for a new weapon, reduced cost." he says, instantly guessing your intent.

He said it'd be like what happened to the Appals. He knows his history, pretty much everyone knows about the Appal insurrection getting turned into ash, and if you actually know about Demonology you can probably work it out. We got that answer because Micheal asked what would happen if you stored a Demon Lord stone in something.

It appeared outside his shop because that's where the gems where, and because we visited the place. It isn't exactly hard to find.

I'm not saying Ja'al is completely innocent, but there isn't enough to believe it's him rather than someone we don't know, and I don't think he'd do anything which would put Micheal in harm. He actually likes Micheal.

"Breaking."

The appal nods, pulling out some vellum and snatching a seal from nearby. a couple slamming motions, and he slides the sheet towards you. A circle bisected four times sits in the center of the paper in wax.

"This is our covenant." the Appal states. "In exchange for this creation, you shall embark on a single favour of my choosing. The favour can be anything of my choice, and with this signing, you agree." he states. "However, I cannot bade you to hurt those you care for or work for, either directly or indirectly." he continues. "The price in gold is listed at the bottom. The weapon shall be complete upon completion of the favour."

"And what favour is that?"

The Appal considers.
"Find for me a special sword lost within the Wilds. I know roughly its position, within an old temple there for Anan." he continues, "Though the magic within the blade may have attracted monsters and beasts."

Micheal looks positively enamoured with the idea, and you are not shocked.

You move into the main hall, where Micheal is talking with the king. At first you were worried the King wouldn't allow it, but he seems rather enthused, happily granting him a carriage loaded with supplies - tents, rations, gear, all sorts of things.

In fact, the king demands that he get started as soon as possible, even tonight.

You frown, moving into your room. The bed is empty, in Teel's place, a note.

'I am afraid I had to leave before I could speak with you in person. While normally I would adore the company of a lady such as you, certain issues have bound me in long-term to another - when I warned you of our relations being short and passionate, this is to what I refer. And I would really suggest a prayer to Raev before setting out, and we shouldn't leave in the middle of the night.

You run your fingers through your hair, then buck up, standing. You need several things before you leave.

First of all, you patch up your armor - not a difficult process by far, but you change into your semiformal wear for the patch to take. Then you apply a healing patch to your chest - Karl had delivered these only the other day, and you're only too happy to use them.

Finally, while it's getting later in the day, you can still pray to Raev alone. The idea, however, makes you flush, as the general method is some sort of dance or exhibition in the dark. Outdoors.

Fully undressed.

First thing is to head to the church.

It's not that far, maybe twenty minutes. The church is incredible, black marble and golden edging everywhere. The priest you met before meets with you, in robes of black lace.

And, rather obviously, nothing beneath. You flush deeply, and he chuckles.
"We are not called "Unadorned" for no reason, Annelin.'

"You remember my name?"

"I remember everyone's name." he says. "You have come here for..."

"Myself and the prince are going on an expedition. I desire the lady's favour, or at least, not her ire."

He nods, lighting a candle - one of twenty.
"And for what cause is this?" he asks.

"I am fulfilling a contract, and teaching him proper combat."

He lights two more candles, nodding.
"Very good. Do you love the boy?"

He lights another candle. There is the sound of something rolling across a board.
"Twelve candles in all out of twenty. You will be favoured." he says, smiling as he slowly brings a paper over each flame in turn. Blue ink draws a line where the fire passes, and he slides it into a pouch. "Wear this around your neck." he says, then blows out the candles. "Raev will walk with you." he bows, and you leave, touching the talisman, still warm.

Your next move is to Karl, who smiles at you, still wearing a shirt.

"Ah! I have not seen much of you since the dra dice. You and Teel got on well enough?" he asks.

You tell him a not-lewd summary, and he nods. "It sounds just like him... At any rate, why are you here?"

"I need some supplies for a journey."

He nods, handing you a small box. You open it, finding three vials within.
"Those will heal any wound. They are not difficult to make, in fact, merely time consuming."

"Any wound?"

"So long as the heart beats. Mind, it is /quite/ painful." he says.

"Poisons?"

"Yes." he says with a smile. "It is a blessing of Law - they will return to a state previous to their harm." he says. "The pain comes from the forced recreation and replacement. Also, take this." Another box, with patches and fluid. "That should do for small wounds."

You bow, taking the supplies into the kitchen, where you pack jerky, tack, and other, similar foods.

You decide to take the time to speak with the king, who looks up at you from his meal.
"Ah. Annelin." he smiles. "I have much to thank you for. Seems my son's finally getting his arse in gear and being a man, for once."

"...You've an awful low opinion of him, sire."

"On the contrary." he says, wiping his face. "Since his mother passed away, he's been very invested in his ladies." he sighs. "But when his mind isn't on that, he's a very bright and strong young man. I want him to grow into his position, not have it handed to him."

"How so?"

"When I pass the crown, he will face me in single combat, first blood. If he fails, I name someone else the successor, someone I am grooming for the role. If he succeeds, he is king."

You raise an eyebrow.
"And if he challenges the new king?"

He laughs, smacking the table.
"Now that'd be something." he says. "Nonetheless, that's several years from now, maybe five or six."

You nod. "Do guard my boy. I want him to grow into a fine king, not die on the roadside."

"I will, sire."

You move to the carriage, looking it over. It's solid, strong, armor-plated and looks fast, with very large horses drawing it.

The Prince smiles at you from around the side.
"So. Everything ready, then?"

Go through a mental checklist, the carriage will act as our bed, it's already covered from the elements anyways, make sure there's blankets and the like, training weapons, food, rope, more rope, a bit more rope, pitons, a lantern or two, lantern oil, knives, cooking equipment, firestarting equipment, pitons, a hatchet, so on and so forth.

"I believe so Micheal.

I want you to remember something. We're going somewhere that does not care about you, it will not weep for your death, and it will present its dangers to you as if you were just another man. You are not a Prince right now, you are a traveler in the wilderness, and the wilderness holds no kindness for our kind.

I will do everything in my power to protect you, but pay attention to your surroundings, and not just with your eyes. It could save your life."

"Remember, this isn't a vacation."

"I went ahead and got the items and location we will need."

You look around the coach, and yes - he has everything we could possibly need. Even ten foot poles and rope.
"Chalk?" you ask, and he shrugs.

"Remember - these lands are not kind. They don't care about your heritage."

He nods, and you get on to ride out.

... ... ...

It's been about half a day since you set out, and you're only in the wilderness at present. The Wilds are not for another day or so.

The difference being, the Wilds were the land where Clown fell when he was struck by the other gods for his frivolous and wanton chaos on the mortal plane. When he fell, a seed of chaos did as well, and it grew, and grew, and grew. A whole civilization was eaten whole by plants, beasts, and Canid.

You shiver.

Canids are a race of wildmen. They aren't like critters, who have a culture and beliefs. Canids simply /are/. They exist, without reproduction or towns or even craftsmen. They spring into the world, fullbodied, and for the most part, very violent. You've only ever fought one.

You never want to again.

Start a fire and get some food cooking, maybe a nice stew so we don't have to think about it.

Do a perimeter check.

Then pray to Raev in the proper way, and if the Prince sees, then so be it.

He blinks at you, pretty eyes silently, in your mind, judging.

"I need some... uhm. Time alone." you manage, flushing, "And don't disturb me unless it's both urgent and... uh, important." you flee off behind the tree line, finding a copse where you're unlikely to be spotted.

Deep breaths, Annelin. Deep, strong breaths. It's just forms. It's just forms, that's all. Might as well start them... normally. Yeah. Just doing spear forms. One step two step three step four. Your eyes close as you go through the movements, feeling muscles shift, feeling the weight of your equipment.

One two three four, one two okay boots and sabatons off.

They drop to the ground, and your bare feet on the thick grass is better than expected. The dirt is soft, and even has give and warmth. Deep breaths.

One two three latch. One two three latch. And with another spin in your movements, your armor falls to the ground and you let out a little gasp. Your undershirt was not made for this. Cool air slides over your barely-covered skin as you move more and more, panting.

Screw it.

Some careful movements, and your bra and undershirt join the pile. To be honest, it's exhilerating. You feel the air over your scarred, tanned body, and you find you want it more and more.

It feels like forever. Long, sweeping movements flow into shorter ones as you avandon your equipment and you're swept into the dance. Invisible, unhearable music launches you from motion to motion, rolling hips and thrusting chest. You can't stop, and don't want to, until you're properly exhausted, sitting in the center of the small copse.

A crow lands nearby, and then...

There's a woman there - in a poncho o feathers. Her skin is as black as the feathers themselves, and she is graceful and smooth with yellow, glimmering eyes.

"R-raev." you manage, falling into a bow.

She nods gently, stepping close and kneeling beside you, gently kissing the crown of your head.

Impressive.

You blink, looking up for her after that whisper, standing.

You dress yourself frantically, stumbling back to camp to sit down. Your face is flushed, you're panting, and the prince smiles and hands you a plate of meats.

He says nothing, and that's somehow even more embarrasing.

Different weapons and equipment allow for different perks. Swords can split spells by cutting them and break enchantments by shredding them. Maces can destroy bounded fields by smashing them. You're close to earning a perk with your shield alone.

Do Canids have genitalia? I'm mainly wondering this because I'm not sure if they do, but since it isn't wearing clothes or armor it would make a tempting target, we could stab it with our spear or punch it with gauntlets.

For general strategy against it I'd suggest taking out the legs first, it's tall so its vitals aren't easy to reach and it can defend itself better if we're stabbing upwards. Aim for the inside of the knee or the Achilles tendon, and then stab it repeatedly once its lost its footing.

Also, is Gina going to take her axe with her on her date? It might help keep people civilized.
