You awaken with a sigh, the cool dampness of the uninsulated temple reminding you how far you are from everything else. You rub your head as you wake up, with a sudden desire for meat-stuffed pastries. It fades as you look towards the camp, where Micheal is sitting, staring at the fire.

You walk over to sit beside him, sitting down.

"Something on your mind?"

He nods.
"What did that demon show you?" he asks softly.

Tell him the demon claims that his father brainwashed his mother and that Douglas claimed to be her guard and that he wants Micheal dead. Even if its not true, its better if Micheal knows everything we know so he can come to his own conclusion.

No matter how much we decide to tell him, Douglas gunning for him needs to be among it.

You sit down and tell the story, carefully.

To his credit, he doesn't stand up or slap you. He doesn't call you a liar. He doesn't, notably, start screaming or crying. His eyes sort of glace over as he looks into the fire, and when you finish, he picks up the slab you moved to find the sword, and drops it back into place on top of the fire.

"That was probably Dolan you saw." he says. "He's the one who set the family onto kinghood. He began this dynasty." he says. "Many people call him a hero. Father says he is someone to follow and he's an example of the royal mindset."

His teeth grit. "I see now how right he was." he growls as he unpitches the tent.

"But it was your father..."

"The Clown's fingers."

"What?"

"It's what me and Ja'al have termed it - but demons have improper memories. Take for example your own cadre of demons, Annelin. Who would blame a child so deeply? Likely they remembered you as you are now." he says, "Or as your mother, with your name." he says offhandedly, stuffing his bag. His every movement has an undertone of fury.

"Micheal, we need to get back home in one piece. Douglas will be trying to hurt you, or your father, and-"

"And we damn well deserve it!" he roars, his face a mask of rage. "We are /horrible/ people! We practically enslave innocents, we rape and decieve, we go to war for no reason other than petty lands!" he's panting, now, crying tears of fury. "These... These monsters call themselves my bloodline! These beasts in human skin are what birthed me!"

"Micheal!" you say more sharply, grasping his shoulders, holding them firmly. "Micheal, you have to get a hold of yourself."

He looks up at you.

"You are who you choose to be, Micheal. You can change all this. It won't be easy or simple, but if we work at it, we can make you strong enough. You will be a good, strong king, and we both know it."

He relaxes in your arms, returning the embrace.

When you part, he flushes, wordlessly picking up his bag to get going.

You follow.

It seems the Clown is in good mood today, as getting out of the Wild is a fair sight easier than getting in - within a few hours you're back to your carriage, packing it up and pulling it out of hiding. Retrieving the horses takes another solid hour, and then you hitch them up.

... ... ...

The trip back is equally uneventful. Micheal is in deep thought, and responds to most discussion monosyllabically or as quickly as possible. It's when you get back to town that he shifts, the sight of the castle raising his hackles.

>>29925952
"I understand if you want to come with me to get the spear."

He nods. "Look, we should be careful about this. You've an image to keep."

"I know. Monica is having an official meeting with me this evening."

"Really. And if you came back later?"

"Then it would be delayed to the next day. And the next day." he says, distantly.

"...What's it about?"

"Monica is the daughter of the mayor of a major shipping port to the Dra kingdom. We hope to secure the line there easily, to facilitate silver shipping."

You stop at the castle, then double around as your luggage is unloaded to see to the Appal.

He takes the sword with a nod, then pulls out an amazing, silver spear. It's beautiful, well-made. He places the sword atop the spear's blade, then lifts his hammer.

Runes appear on the striking surface and on the sword, and he hammers them together - and the spear shines.

Thin, glowing cracks of blue shimmer on the beautiful spear, and the Appal grins.
"There we are. A Breaking Spear." he says, handing it over. It's a little longer than you're used to - but a few forms will decide that.

You hold the spear in hand as you walk, sliding it into its harness as you reach Ja'al's place. Looking through the window, you see an axe leaning on the counter, and a cape with the royal insignia hanging on the rack behind it.

Your fist stops on the way to the door, and Micheal's mood clearly brightens as he lowers it for you.
"Let's leave them to it, yes?" he says softly.

You nod, turning around and heading back to the Appal's shop, going through forms and then noticing something. When you swing hard, the tip of the spear comes apart at the cracks, then reforms when you stop.

You swing harder, and the bits seperate further, giving you an extra foot of range. When you stab hard, the bits sail out two feet, hard, then yank back.

One strikes a stone, which cracks in a perfect line along where it was struck.

Neat.

You explain the events of the time to him, and he goes into thought.
"It seems that only one of those visits was planned - the other two happened because of your actions. A prayer and a cleansing." he says. "Those are rather normal. Raev is a very kind goddess who visits many of her believers." he says with a gentle smile.

You say your thanks at the church and hurry along. Returning to the castle, the King greets the both of you in high spirits. A solid slap to the back of his son, whereupon he presents him with a massive royal cloak fashioned from the canid we defeated.

"I had you followed, just to be sure!" he says, "And it turns out you didn't need it! Why, when we found that neck wound on the thing, so clean and perfect, I knew, I knew it was my boy that weakened it enough for Annelin to make the kill. Maybe the other way around, even. All I know is, my boy is becoming a man at last!" he says, all pride and high spirits.

"Well, sire, I believe the prince has been aching to train properly since the trip, so if you will excuse me, we should get going." you say, pulling the prince away to the training yard. You relax once you get there, and the Prince goes through the most basic forms. He is getting a little better, you think. It's been about a week, and he's been working hard every day, after all.

A servant arrives, handing you a letter.

'To Annelin,

I must apologize for the poor news that will follow this letter.

I have been promoted. It is not something I can easily deny - a position as a general among the dra army is quite prestigious. Maybe, in the coming months or years, I will have cause to visit you, but things are moving in ways I cannot fight. And so I write to you instead, in the hopes that my words will reach you as my arms cannot.

I am sorry. I must reach as high as I can, for honor, for a family, for my future.

With great passion,

Drak Teel'

You take deep breaths.

Sure, it was a one night stand. Sure, you weren't really expecting more. And sure, he told you it wouldn't last. But there was hope, in the back of your heart. Hope that maybe, just maybe... You'd see one another again.

This is worse than having it broken. This isn't even sureness. It's a 'maybe'. It's not a yes, or a no, it's just more false hope behind a veneer of possibility. You push it in, deeper and deeper, until it's gone.

You take another deep breath, looking up to correct Micheal on his motions. It'll be a while before he's ready to do much of anything.

"You two have fun." you say, smiling as best you can. Monica's eyes flit to the envelope in her hand, and her eyes meet yours, a look of pity in hers.

"What a shame." she says softly. "But they're all like that, I suppose, so... See you later~" she says, leaving with Micheal before you can say anything. You blink. What did she mean by that?

You return to your room, sitting down at your desk. You were never very good with words...

Something about how we are proud and happy for him, how the comfort of his letters pales in comparison to the comfort of his arms, but are more than warmth enough for all the miles between us. Maybe throw in something how our door will always be open to him, if even just to chat? I suck with words.

Urgh, I know how Annelin feels. Fucking heartfelt letters.

Wish him luck in his new position, tell him that we will always remember and treasure the night we spent together, but don't suggest that we're pining after him, because to be honest he pulled a bit of a dick move here and I don't want us coming across as needy.

You blow the ink dry, leaning back as you look it over and sigh, fingertips to your forehead. What to do now. You feel empty, in multiple ways. Without the gaurentee of his return, what is there to do?

You slide it into an envelope, moving to go through your forms again, hoping to burn out the energies. But it doesn't help much. You still feel so drained and yet needing fulfillment.

"That's interesting." you say, smirking. "The mana in the air is totally untouched. There's no magic flowing here."

"That's right. Even divine magic would lead from the Heavens to me in a Blessed Line." he says, taking slow steps. "And Magic would flow from the world to me like a drain. But this is different. Let me tell you a little story."

He leaps forward. You barely slip out of the way of an axe kick that cracks the earth, stumbling. "When Law made man, he looked at all the other races. The Ogres with their mighty strength. The Appals with their love of steel." he shoots forward again, glowing lines tracing in the air. "Dra with their great ingenuity and art. Alvins, with their mastery of the skies." he laughs, "And dozens more, each more amazing than the last. And so Law looked upon his work. And he said, 'lo, though you are lesser than the sum of your neighbors, you are greater in the sum of your parts'. And he gave them something none of the others had!"

A leaping, arcing kick catches you in the belly, sending you tumbling. "A Soul of great power and malleability! A Soul that can learn and change! Any human can be greater than any mere critter! In fact, we have the potential, if we push ourselves on one thing, to be greater even than an Ogre in strength. We can become smarter than even the greatest Dra scholars! We Swear ourselves to but a single purpose, and we become that purpose!"

You raise your shield just in time to not be caught in the belly and lose your breath. "This is the might of a Sworn, Annelin. This is the might that Law gave us. Why do you grovel at the feet of lizards when a man stands ready at your side?"

He looks away in thought, cocking his head to one side. His golden aura unraveling back around his hand, where it vanishes. He sets you down with a sigh.

"My apologies." he says.

"What?"

"My capabilities as a Sworn often override my own sensibilities. I'm a Sworn of Humanity. If the course of that leads to what you say, then perhaps you're right. The Prince should decide for himself how he rules, as he is a finger of Law himself." he takes a deep breath. "The church planted me in this position in a hope to maintain a stable kingdom - we do not wish for civil war or unrest, and the simplest way to do that is to maintain the status quo. However... Your words ring with me." He rubs his head with a sigh. "But. If you push him to overthrow his father, or to support rebellion..." he frowns. "Oh, I understand, and I apologize for my rash actions. I was fearful you were pushing him to do something inane. It seems we are aiming for the same thing from different angles."

You frown.
"You know, the more I know you, the less attractive you get, Karl."

"A shameful thing." he admits. "But to change who I am for a lay or even approval, well, that's a different kind of deception." he adjusts his glasses.

"You have no idea how much I want to beat the shit out of you."

"I seem to have that effect on people." he reflects with a sigh. "Nowadays, anyway."

"Shame I have to turn down the massage."

"Ah, well, I learned it from Rikard anyway." he grumbles, walking away with hands in pockets.

Your name is Ja'al. And you are scared shitless. It's two hours until Gina is supposed to show up, and again, your place has become a mess and you've lost track of your own grooming. Part of you wants to run away, but another part is excited. Scared and worried and anxious.

You set some water and get to cleaning the place. It takes about an hour, but you get some calming tea in there as well. After pumping some hot water into a tub, you take your time preening and cleaning, looking over yourself.

You're pretty pale and slender. You've never developed your muscles much... But all your magic use has left its mark. You trace the soft blue markings along your collar, arms, and chest, angular and long. They glow when you use magic, but not bright enough to pierce clothing. You dry yourself, and dress in some of your best clothes. You a deep breath and finally scrub your horns hard, then smile at the shine.

You take a deep breath and sit down.

Relax. Drink your tea. Relax.

The knock on the door damn near jolts you out of your skin, but you keep the tea in the cup as you scramble up and open the door.

She's so... shiny. Her armor has been shined, polished, and cleaned, her clothing just under ironed and washed. Her hair looks soft and warm, and her eyes smile down at you.

"Hey there. Ready to hit the town?"

>I, uhm, let me grab my b-b-bag.

"S-sure!" you manage, walking out at speed - though you fail yo notice your wings unfurling somewhat, and they catch in the door. You legs try to keep walking, and you fall back, crashing to the floor. You groan as Gina helps you up, strong enough to easily lift you. Your body is made to fly, so it's lightweight.

"Rest easy, Ja'al." she says gently. "I'm not here to hurt you."

You nod, rubbing the back o your head as you leave. You don't often leave your shop in the day, but the looks and stares of all the people make you want to run. It's only her hand on your shoulder that keeps you staring at your feet, rather than using them to flee. You eventually sit down at the small eatery, feeling incredibly nervous as she places her order.

"And what'll you have, feathers?"

The word makes you twitch a little, looking at your lap.

You look up at him, stammering, not even finding the words as his eyes narrow. You know what you want, you just can't say it, useless noises coming out instead of anything coherent.
"He'll have what I'm having." Gina says. "Sorry, he has a lot of trouble with crowds."

"Open my place to critters and this is what I get..." he grumbles, ambling off to work on the order. Two very spicy pasta dishes. "At least we have a booth." she says, leaning back.

"S-sorry." you manage.

"Sorry for what?"

"I'm... I'm so scared I can't even make an order properly." you manage. The feeling of fear wells up within you as you stare at the table.

"I never thought I'd say this while wearing armor, but... Eyes are up here, sparky." her finger lifts your chin and you look up at her smiling face. "I didn't expect you to be a ravishing confident hunk, Ja'al. I expected you to be your adorable self. Just simmer down." she says, as the meal comes down before you.

You get up to try and reconcile the problem, but send your own meals to the floor when your other wing knocks them over, and when you step out to apologize, you slip and fall as soup falls on Gina's head.

You reach up to try and apologize, but you're hefted up bodily, and thrown into the street, scrabbling to your feet.

Thats just it if you pay attention jaal is competent. He is a mage, demonologist, enchanter and hes good at it. If he wanted to he could probably smear both these guards into carbon-stains on the cobbles... he just lacks the confidence to do so. Hes really upset about the racism, but feels like he can't do anything about it.

No. Enough running.

You fold your wings, panting as more people come out of the woodwork. She frowns, in thought, then stands up quickly.
"...By royal order this individual is under my detainment!" she calls. "Anyone who brings him harm must answer to me, the Prince, or the king!"

That shuts them up pretty quickly. "And you! Get these poor fools some help." she says, picking me up and running. Once out of earshot, she hisses.

"What the hell, Ja'al?! What was that?!"

"Forces, direct application." you say distantly. "For use in situations where lethal force is not advised."

"That poor man might not walk again!"

"I just... I just wanted to be left alone..."

Gina looks down at you.
"Are you so sure?"

She finally sets you down, looking down at the glowing marks.

"You just hurt two officers of the law, Ja'al." she says softly. "And I was seen there with you."

"Yes." you say, defeated.

"We have to get you out of the city."

God damn it, with every post it seems more and more likely that this interlude will end with Ja'al dead, or at the very least sent so far away that he is no longer part of the story.

She frowns, looking down at you, kneeling beside you in thought.

"Even if the prince needs me... That isn't fair. Not to my father and mother, not to other critters..."

"The prince needs you?"

You sigh, explaining what you know.
"... And you needed me..."

"No! No, no!" you desperately say. "It... It might've started like that, but I like you and... I don't want you hurt."

You are Gina, Lord Captain of the Praetorian Guard. You've taken a liking to this Alvin. He's small and cute, and he tries so hard to impress you or at least not fall over himself. You admit, had things gone differently, you might have contemplated a few things.

Right now, though, his life is in your hands.

>Follow the law. He's to see trail under the god of his choosing. More than likely, he will be seen as guilty, and be sent to a jail for magi.
>Follow your instinct. He's needed by the prince enough to make it worth the exception. You'll get him lodging at the castle.
>Follow your feelings. You don't want him to end up dead or worse - so you'll smuggle him out.
>>
>>29933231
Bad dice rolls plus forgetting how to teleport.

I'd say that is the first major misstep of the quest.

By which you are using the standard /tg/ definition of "misstep" which means "anything I don't like happening to me."

>Follow your instinct. He's needed by the prince enough to make it worth the exception. You'll get him lodging at the castle.

Tell her to smuggle the sealed lord to the prince, at tell her not to touch it with her bare skin.
>>
>>29933314
I'm saying that if the option is to escape using magic, people assume that the option will be "escape using magic" not "assault guards using magic".

It's a clear case of miscommunication on the part of the QM.

Put him in a room that nobody uses. Make sure he's comfortable there, bring food and water, but he really can't be seen in public. Only if he's okay with it, though.
>>
>>29933277
Oh, by the way, does Ja'al know any form of teleport spells? Actually, could we just see his character sheet? We need that info if we want to break him out of jail or use him effectively in general.
>>
>>29933368
Pretty much. People assumed that Ja'al was talking to himself and going to use magic to escape, while you intended him to be using magic to make the guards get away from him.
>>
It's been an angsty day today in Bloodline Protector Quest.
>>
>>29933389
You sigh, in thought.

"Alright, look. It doesn't matter what the law is. Officially, I have mandate above them all."

"You can just..."

"I can just do that. And it is fair, because it's the law. And the law, sometimes, needs to look at the needs of the greater stability and act accordingly. In this case, you are central to the prevention of an assassination, so I am officially declaring you a special witness in a royal matter. You will be given lodgings in the castle, and anyone who heaps abuse on you is subject to my grace." you grin. "And I am not very graceful. So. We are going to get you to the castle right now, send Karl to help that poor man, and we are going to have a long talk, alone, over a dinner that I make, about our future."

To his credit, he manages a yes, instead of a weak-willed nod.

>>

I find that all of Captain Birdstutter's problems could be fixed via peptalk. Annelin has solved at least five different issues with peptalks alone. We just need to apply her diplomancy to his stuttering incompetence.
>>
>>29933499
Can we please get Ja'al's character sheet the next time we pilot him?

>>
>>29933589
Sorry. I am indeed running tomorrow with that as the premise, and I will have Ja'al's sheet ready.
>>
>>29933569
True, but he can't look up any demon related stuff while at the castle. And we were trying to keep the assassination attempt in front of his house a secret. I mean, this is good for Ja'al, but it's bad for the Prince and Annelin.
>>
>>29933619
Combine their might. Gina's shotacon tendencies and Annelin's bizarre ability to peptalk her way out of anything.

Soon, birdshota will be a god.
>>
>>29933632

I'm allowed to be optimistic, right?
>>

>>
>>29933499
>>29933618
Yeah, Karl's not going to like this. Especially the fact that this isn't the LAW option.
>>
>>29933656
He has two perks, all in magic.

Magemind, which allows him to take best of four rolls, and Wild Magic, which instantly crits the first roll, no matter what.

It makes it very hard for him to be nonlethal.
>>
>>29933761
>Wild Magic, which instantly crits the first roll
Holy shiiiiit
>>
>>29933761
Jesus Christ. Ja'al wrecks people's shit.
>>
>>29933802
The problem is that if he uses magic he can't NOT wreck shit. It's why he didn't use it when Silver-hand was there.
>>
>>29933825
That would have been useful to know in advance of us picking the magic option.

Also, is there teleportation magic or speed based transportation stuff in this setting? Because if not it would be nice to know.
>>
>>29933825
So Ja'al is the team's nuclear option

Good to know.
>>
>>29933761
Ja'al really didn't optimize his perks well for his lifestyle, did he.

Now if he was some ruthless warlord who gave no fucks for anyone but himself, those would be a good pair of perks.
>>
>>29933889
Teleportation is incredibly risky unless used on inanimate objects, as it sends things through Hell briefly. Humans who enter Hell are pulls out of their bodies and become demons.
>>
>>29933928
Another thing that would have been nice to know, but we'll keep it in mind.
>>
>>29933928
Since Ja'al isn't human, does that mean he could make the journey without demonifying?
>>
>>29933825
So Ja couldn't, say, control the local air currents to assist his flying without kicking up a hurricane and breaking every bone in his wings? Is there any way to teach him some level of finesse?
