You are Captain WILLIAM PIERCE, a combat rescue officer of the United States Air Force.

You've been spending the last couple of weeks performing nonstop flights in the newly developed Ghost Hawk, for better or worse. On the one hand, being able to fly cutting edge, highly classified, experimental military equipment was pretty much every soldier's wet dream, and you were starting to take a liking to the Ghost Hawk. However, the nonstop tests were a huge physical and mental effort to keep up with. Not only was Red's mom a slave driver when it came to managing her projects, but the DoD wanted the Ghost Hawk and Comanche operational as quickly as possible so they could be deployed against the encroaching Russians.

Every day was taking the Ghost Hawk out on a flight, looking for bugs or quirks in its performance, flying back, reporting everything, waiting for the techs to make adjustments, and then flying back out again.

However, while you were skeptical at first, you were starting to pick up an appreciation for the Ghost Hawk. Once you actually started testing its stealth functions, you found that the Ghost Hawk was pretty terrifying. The combination of its stealth tech and its ability to fly low to the ground meant it was virtually impossible to spot on radar unless you were within spitting distance of it. Hell, one time Bullseye even buzzed Istres Tower during a night run and the traffic controllers never even noticed a thing.

There were also OpFor exercises where you had to play cat and mouse with the local French aggressor units, including Nungesser. Again, you and Bullseye had quite a bit of fun scaring the pants off French soldiers and sailors by sneaking in uncomfortably close before they realized what was gong on.

Meanwhile, Janice and Tarin were now training on and testing out the newest iteration of the Silent Eagle strikers. Since they were basically F-15 variants, the acclimatization process wasn't nearly as debilitating, and now they could actually keep up steelwings while maintaining stealth capability.

You were also pretty damn sure Bullseye and Nungesser were having some sort of fling, though with the hours you spending in the air, you had no idea how they were finding the time. Perhaps it was better not to think about it.

On the other end, the Comanche was also doing amazingly well. By itself, a stealth attack helo was pretty scary, but when amped up with magic, it was straight up terrifying. The French AA crews literally just gave up trying to find the damn thing during night time.

However, you were in the home stretch now. Christina was amazed by the progress at which your crew was going, and was fairly sure the Ghost Hawk and Comanche would be ready for field testing soon. Hell, even Colonel Anderson flew down to check things out.

"I have to say, you and your crew are doing a damn fine job." Anderson grins as you disembark from the Ghost Hawk's last flight for the day. "I'm expecting great things in the future."

"Pity, and I was getting used to France, too." You sigh.

"Beautiful country. I can understand." Anderson nods.

"And even more beautiful women." You crack a grin.

Both of you start chuckling like schoolboys hearing a dirty joke for the first time.

"All right." Anderson quickly regains his composure when realizes he could be seen out here. "We're putting a hold a hold on all testing for tomorrow while we decide what do with the Ghost Hawk and Comanche. That means you'll pretty much have a free night tonight."

"Thank you, sir." Well, that was a first in a long while.

"You guys deserve it." Anderson nods. "I'll see you tomorrow."

"Wait, just a second sir." You stop him. "It's been forever since we've been on the front. What's the situation?"

"Same as always really." Anderson shrugs. "We're still stalemated, but there's intel suggesting that the Russia's Big Push is going to happen soon. We're not exactly sure when, but it's going to happen."

"Sounds rough." You frown.

"Well, we'll talk more about it in detail in the morning."

You snap a salute as Anderson leaves, and then you hear Red behind you.

"Ohmygod does that mean we actually SLEEP IN!!?" She squeals.

"Yes, Red, we can all get some sleep." You laugh.

"You know," Janice walks up to you, now out of her strikers. "I'm thinking that we all have a special dinner tonight, to celebrate the occasion!"

"As her commanding officer, it's not my place to judge who Red wants to hang out with." You respond stoically. Though to tell the truth, you were pretty glad Red was making the effort to make friends outside of the unit. She was certainly starting to grow up.

"I never suggested otherwise." Janice says, her smile unbroken.

"Hey, so when are we going to get this little party started? I brought the good wine and everything!"

You turn your head to see Nungesser leaning against the door, a bottle of wine in her hands.

"Nungesser? What are you doing here?" You blink.

"My party sense was tingling." Nungesser grins. "Plus Janice here was nice enough to invite me."

"My French cooking is a bit rusty, and Nungesser offered to help." Janice confirms.

Well, you guess it was okay. It's just that.... well, Nungesser in some ways reminded you of Bree, in both good and bad ways.

"Okay, you can stay, but you'd better be on your best behavior. Especially once Bullseye comes."

"Cross my heart." Nungesser says, drawing an x across her chest.

"Now, we'd better get things prepared before everybody arrives!" Janice says.

You decide to help Tarin set up the table. You were probably just going to get in the way of the girls in the kitchen, anyways. It's simple work, really. All the two of you have to do is pull plates, cups, and silverware out of the cupboards and arrange them on the table. Initially, things start out silent, with only the clinking of plates and silverware breaking the silence, with muffled conversations between Janice and Nungesser emanating from the kitchen, with the occasional loud gasp from Janice followed by raucous laughter from Nungesser.

"So, Tarin." You say, turning to your stealthwitch. "How are the new Silent Eagle strikers working out for you."

"Pretty good."

....

"Okay, how have you been holding up with the testing schedule then? Not too fatigued, are you?"

"No, not really."

...

Wow, now you're starting to realize just how difficult it was to hold a conversation with Tarin. You wonder how Janice does it.

"So Tarin, I have to ask." You say as you set down the last plate. "Do you have any friends or family outside the Air Force? You don't really seem to talk much, and it doesn't seem like you send much mail out, either."

"Not really." Tarin sighs. "You should know, sir. You've read my file."

"Yeah, and it's just ink on a piece of paper. I want to hear it from you." You say.

Tarin sighs again and sits down on one of the seats.

"No, I don't really know anybody outside of the Air Force." She says. "My parents died when I was little, so I can hardly remember them. My Grandpa was sort of a hermit, and lived off the grid. I mean, he's not a bad guy or anything, but when you're raised in the middle of the woods, days away from any sort of civilization, social skills kind of fall on the backburner."

You didn't quite realize up until now just how screwed up Tarin's life. Sure, you had an idea from her file, but from the blunt, nonchalant way she recounted everything, you could tell that those experiences broke her, which is how she ended up the girl she is today.

It was too tragic.

"So, what was your grandfather like, anyways?" You ask, seeing if you could steer the conversation into a more positive direction.

"He was.... eccentric, but he always had the best in mind for me." Tarin says, actually smiling a bit. "He taught me everything I knew so that I could fend for myself."

"He must have been a pretty scary guy." You whistle.

"Very." Tarin nods. "I never really had a chance to ask him, but I suspect he was military, too. He was very paranoid about the government, and now that I think about it, I think the reason why he raised me in the wilderness was to keep me out of the Academy."

"Huh, why would he do that?"

"Don't know." Tairn shrugs. "And he's not exactly around anymore, so I can't ask him."

"How did he die, anyways? The file doesn't mention it."

"Died in his sleep from a heart attack." Tarin says simply. "I just did what he told me in the event of his death. Bury him in the backyard and just continue on."

"Well, in either case." You pat Tarin on the head, like you would always do to Red. "We're your family now. All of us. Don't be afraid to tell us if you're feeling down, or that something's wrong. You got that?"

Tarin blinks and then wordlessly nods. Well, you suppose that will have to do.

At that moment, Red, your aircrew, and Ugly and LIz enter the barracks. You can also see that Janice's observations were corrected. Judging from how Red and Ugly were in a heated conversation about something, it was clear they were getting pretty chummy with each other. Liz, meanwhile, trails a little behind them, an amused look on her face.

Meanwhile, Snips, Hoskins, and Rex were still giving Bullseye shit over his relationship with Nungesser as they tried to pry details out of him. To his credit, Bullseye doesn't give away anything to them, despite the harassment.

However, you do note that Janice and Nungesser have been in the kitchen for quite a while. You wonder what's going on back there.

"Just a sec, guys, I'm going to check on the food." You say as you head to the kitchen.

"-and that is the Nungesser family secret to pleasing anyone you want, regardless of gender!" Nungesser says proudly.

"O-Oh my." Janice stammers, her face crimson red. "That's... certainly interesting."

"Oh hey! Pierce! Just in time!" Nungesser grins. "Food's just about done. All we have to do is serve it!"

"Great, because pretty much everybody is here." You nod. "Janice, are you all right?"

"It's probably against my better judgment, but now I have to know what you just said to get Janice here so flustered." You say.

"Sorry! It's a secret between us girls!" Nungesser grins. "Isn't that right, Janice?"

"Y-yes." Janice nods quickly. "It's nothing you should be concerned about."

Huh, okay, you guess.

"Alright, then we should quite wasting time and serve the food." You say.

With that, the dinner starts. Janice and Nungesser had whipped up a traditional French three course meal, starting off with a bowl of French onion soup, then proceeding to steak frites with oysters on the side, and finally finishing off with some Crème brûlée for dessert. You honestly have no goddamn clue where the two witches got the ingredients for these dishes, much less cook them so well in a freaking barracks kitchen.

At this point, everybody was pretty much full, and combined with the fatigue built up from all the test flights, food coma was beginning to set in. However, you all perk up when Nungesser stands up, holding out the wine bottle she had brought.

(cont)

>>29939945
"Now, I was actually going to be saving this until the end of the war, but... since you're all such great friends, I thought I'd pop it open a little early!" She smiles.

"What is it?" You ask. It had to be extremely special to her if she was saving it for the end of the war.

"Well, you see..." Nungesser looks at the bottle, with a nostalgic expression. "This particular bottle is one of the few made from the first batch of grapes to be cultivated in France after it was retaken from the Martians."

"Jesus." You blink. "A vintage of that year is.... almost priceless."

"Which is why I was saving it for a special occasion." Nungesser smiles. "But what better occasion is there than enjoying a simple dinner with your friends?"

Wow... you weren't expecting this, but you now felt a sudden increase in respect for Nungesser.

"So, to the end of the war." Nungesser toasts, raising her glass."

"To the end of the war." Everybody toasts as well before downing their own drinks.

And it was some pretty fucking good wine.

At that point, everybody begins to disperse. The air crew gets up first to return to their own barracks. Bullseye actually gives Nungesser a kiss on the cheek, which she returns with a hearty slap on his ass, much to everybody's amusement. Pretty soon it's just you, Red, Janice, and Tarin.

"All right, I suppose I should go clean up the kitchen." Janice says as she stands up and puts on an apron. "Red, if you could be a dear and collect all the dishes we can get everything cleaned up by tonight."

"Gotcha." Red nods.

"And Captain, I believe Tarin may need an escort back to her quarters." Janice says.

You turn to see that Tarin had fallen asleep and snoring lightly, her head resting on the table. Man, she wasn't kidding when she said alcohol made her sleepy.

"Don't worry about coming back down. Me and Red can take care of the rest. Just think of it as getting some extra sleep, okay?"

"Thanks, Janice." You nod. You bend down and gently pick up Tarin in a princess carry. You're surprised at the fact that she's astonishingly light, maybe even lighter than Red. You of course do not voice this observation out loud.

Tarin's snoring is interrupted for a bit as she mumbles something incomprehensible before falling silent again. You then carry her out of the dining hall and to the living quarters. It's a bit of a challenge opening the door with your hands dedicating to carrying Tarin, but you eventually manage it and set Tarin gently on her bed.

It's then that your foot catches on something. You look down and see a small carry bag, undoubtedly Tarin's. You steal a glance back at Tarin, but she's still pretty much conked out. You're tempted to open the bag to see what's inside. You know it's wrong but deep down you just want to know a little more about the eternally enigmatic Tarin.

"So anyways, I saw that you were getting pretty friendly with Nungesser there." You say. "I didn't think the two of you would have much in common."

"Well, she's quite fascinating, really." Janice grins. "You see, Nungesser is actually descended from one of France's most famous aces from the Great War. That, combined with her family's contributions to the Martian War and the French reconstruction effort mean she and her family are quite influential in France."

"Which would be very helpful to a prospective matron, right?" You crack a grin.

"Perhaps." Janice chuckles. "But she's a fascinating person, regardless. She's one of the best air combat witches in the world, and her list of decorations is only matched by her list of infractions and citations."

"Really? I heard she was a bit of a troublemaker, but is she really that bad?" You blink.

"Oh, it's mostly charges of insubordination, such as taking off without orders to participate in battles. Though she on more than on occasion has been charged with 'excessively hedonistic lifestyle,' whatever that means."

"Well, it's gotta be bad if the FRENCH think she's too hedonistic." You frown.

"It would be, wouldn't it?" Janice laughs. "Well, I think the kitchen is clean enough."

"I'm done with the dishes, too." Red announces.

"Let's get some sleep then, shall we?"

---

The next morning, you're awoken not by your alarm, but by a blaring siren that shrieks throughout the entire base. You immediately leap out of bed and start getting dressed. You knew an emergency alarm when you heard one.

"Cap? What's going on?" Red blinks as she shoots up from her bed.

"Come on Red, get dressed. We're going to find out what's going on!" You yell.

You and Red exit right as Janice and Tarin do as well. Without having to speak, the four of you immediately exit the barracks. You see Istres is a flurry of activity. Ground crew and vehicles are moving back and forth, and you see the many hangars opening one by one to let out the fighters stored within. ON the runway, you can see a squadron of Mirages ready to take off.

"Captain! What the hell's going on!?" You hear Bullseye yell as he and the rest of the aircrew approach..

"No clue." You respond. "You guys know anything?"

"Just that all the French pilots in our barracks building got roused and were told to scramble." Rex says.

"Yeah, it seems like something big is going down." Hoskins nods. "We should get to our helicopter.

"Would they even let us take it out?" Snips asks.

"Who cares, it's better than doing nothing!" Hoskins growls.

"Hoskins has a point. We'll head for the Ghost Hawk. We might even be able to catch Anderson there." You nod.

With that, all of you head over to the hangar where the Ghost Hawk is stored. This hangar, unlike the other ones, is sealed shut. Up ahead, you see Anderson directing a bunch of scientists around.

"Colonel, what's going on?" You ask.

(cont)
>>

"Ah Pierce, it looks like I don't have to send a runner then." Anderson sighs. "Two hours ago, the Russians began to mobilize en masse and converge on Berlin. It's the Big Push."

"Shit." You gasp.

"Istres is scrambling every fighter it can spare to support the front."

"What about us?" You ask.

"Your orders are to stand down until further notice." Anderson says.

"What?!" Red blinks. "We can't just sit here while the Russians roll over Berlin!"

"What will you do? Fly the Ghost Hawk there? That piece of equipment is still highly classified, and we can't afford to risk revealing its existence to the Russians! The Ghost Hawk and Comanche are not going anywhere. You are to stand down until further notice.

"Any older equipment we can use? We're gonna need every PJ unit out there."

Not in the middle of a raging battle we won't. We're just another target for the Russians, and another chopper in the way for the Americans.

I mean join the flights of PJs who hang back to extract injured personnel.

Like that mission in which pierce was injured.

"There's got to be another way." You scowl.

"Well..." Anderson frowns. "Your old Pave Hawk is still in Ramstein. I can try to arrange a transport to fly you there, but be warned. All airspace is currently being reserved for combat aircraft only. It might take a while for a window to open for a transport.

"It's fine as long as we can get into the fight." You say.

"Then stay put. I'll see what I can do." Anderson says before leaping into a jeep and driving off.

It takes another couple of hours for Anderson to be able to arrange a C-130 back to Ramstein, though you're technically just stowing away on an already scheduled flight. You and your crew rush on, and are slightly dismayed to see that the C-130 is carrying all extra medical supplies and personnel Istres can spare. The fighting had to be getting pretty bad out there.

The flight back to Ramstein is long, but quiet. Nobody really feels like talking, due to all of the anxiety. Every so often you'll look out he viewport and see numerous jets screaming by as they head for the front at full speed.

Finally, the C-130 touches down at Ramstein and all of you pile out in the hurry. On the tarmac, you see an airman standing in front of a couple of Humvees.

"Captain Pierce?" He asks.

"Yeah, that's me." You nod.

"Colonel Anderson called ahead. We've got your Pave Hawk fueled up and ready to go."

>Thanks, now get us to our bird.

"How's the battle been going?" You ask.

"Well, most of the major fighting is over." The airman cracks a weak grin. "I don't know how, but we managed to send the Russians packing. The Germans and French managed to catch their main force in a pincer attack, and I heard the Eagle of Tanana himself showed up and shot down two Dreadnoughts by himself!"

"So we won?" You blink.

"Well, yes and no." The airman sighs. "Last I heard, the Russians are retreating all across the line, headed back to Poland, but they left hell of a mess behind .We've got a lot of guys and even whole units MIA, and we're picking up emergency beacons and distress signals everywhere. We're trying to organize rescue efforts but everyone's just damn exhausted from the battle."

"I see. Get us to our bird."

"Can do, sir. You'll be given more mission details once you're in the air."

With that, the humvee rolls to a stop in front of a very familiar looking Pave Hawk. Wasting no time, you, Red, and your aircrew pile out of the humvees and dash for the Pave Hawk, moving to get it operational. Meanwhile, Janice and Tarin start the process of putting on their strikers.

By the time you're all geared up and ready to go, the sun is already starting to set.

"Are you ready, sir?" Bullseye asks as the Pave Hawk's engines power up.

"Hopefully." You say. "Get us up, Bullseye."

With that, the Pave Hawk lifts up and flies off into the darkness.

>And that's it for today! I wanted to go a bit further but I guess we'll just have to wait until next Friday.
>Don't forget we have Cyberpunk Idols running on Saturday!
