The smoldering remains of the two Reaverbots you managed to destroy lie a few feet away from where you sit. The air is cold, musty, and has an unusual smell to it that’s somewhere between chlorine and copper. The room is dark and now that the Firushudot’s are gone it’s eerily quiet again, save for the sound of your heavy breathing and the pounding of your heart.

Just as you stand up, finished with your rest, a familiar voice shouts out from the speaker of your walkie-talkie.

“Bass? BASS! Are you there? What happened?”

Pulling the Walkie-talkier off your hip you press a button on the side of it and speak as clearly as you can with your shortness of breath.

“I’m fine Ira. I ran into a couple of nasty Reaverbots and had to fight them. I destroyed one, disabled another, and chased the other two off.”

“Really? Good job!” Ira says letting out an audible sigh of relief before returning to her usual excited tone “Cruiser says you should bring that disabled
Reaverbot up with you before you leave. Even if the insides are junk he can still use the shell “

“It’s pretty heavy and kind of big, do we have room to take it back?” You look over the remains of the two Firushudot’s as you speak. One is completely intact while the other is nothing but a pile of burnt, warped metal where not even the refractor shards survived its destruction.

“He says we might be able to fit it in the trunk or in the back seat. Bring it up whenever you feel you should and we’ll figure something out.”

Placing the walkie-talkie back on your hip you think on what to do next. This place seems
bigger than the Forest Ruin and so far it seems a lot more dangerous. You could leave the disabled Firushudot here and continue exploring, but something could happen to it or you could be forced to leave it behind due to a trap.

The thing is pretty heavy and dragging it will no doubt make a lot of noise that might attract unwanted attention. Still, it is pretty valuable and no doubt has a lot of refractor shards inside that you can’t get too without busting open its shell.

So, what do you want to do Bass?

I don't trust whatever pseudo-ecology the Reaverbots operate on to not eat this thing while we're gone. Let's bring it back to Cruiser and then we can do more exploring if we still have time left in the day.

Grabbing the metal corpse with both hands you lift it over your head and set on your shoulder, carrying it to the elevator with little effort and almost no noise. It's times like this you're thankful of all those years you begrudgingly helped your father carry his heavier catches to market.

Riding the elevator back to the surface you haul the Firushudot over to the car and load it into the back with a little assistance from Cruiser.

"Wow! Nice catch! I don't think we'll have to worry about it waking up and tearing up my upholstery. That smell definitely means it's internal systems are about as cooked as a baked potato. Still, the shell is totally intact and I know I can make something useful out of it."

Cruiser slams the rear door of the car as you look up and see the sun shining down from the clear blue sky. You still have plenty of daylight to burn and you've only been in the tower for about an hour.

Do you wish to continue Digging or return to shore?
>>

The day is still young and there's so much more to do, why stop digging now? You leave Ira and Cruiser to watch for anything suspicious as you return to the ruinous depths.

Stepping off the elevator you walk into the hall. Do you want to return to where you were and continue exploring from there or do you want to check the hallway to the east? When you first entered you heard an odd grinding sound from from somewhere down that hall.

What do you wish to do?

Deciding to check out the noise you heard earlier, you take the hallway you skipped over and began walking down it, checking for traps with your extendable pole and looking for anything of interest. You pass another corridor and a door, but continue walking down the hall to fully explore it. It appears like all the other hallways you've walked through so, but you can tell that something has been through here recently as the dust on the ground has been obviously been disturbed by something large.

Turning to the west you come to a dead end, but find an orange chest sitting up against the wall.
Popping it open you find some kind a large, grey, key like device. In fact you don’t think it’s a device at all, it looks like a big key or something you’d club someone to death with. Unsure what do you with it you call it in.

“Hey Ira, I found what looks like a big key…”

“A key? That’s odd, why would a key be down there? Well maybe there’s something down there that takes it. I’d keep an eye out for anything it might go too.”

You stuff the ‘key’ in your bag and go back to the door you passed. Opening it up, you step inside and find yourself in another room with water filled channels.

Across the room you see two doors, the western one leads back to the room you fought the Firushudot’s in and the northern one leads back to the hallway you just walked in from.

Before you can wonder why there’s a redundant hallway, you stop dead as you see something floating in the air in the darkness of the room. It’s hard to see them even with your headlamp, but floating in the air above the channels are six oddly shaped Reaverbots, your stomach turning a little as their appearance reminds you of fish.

They haven’t spotted you yet, but that could easily change if you stand around gawking at them. If you’re quick maybe you can sneak past them and get to the southern door. Or maybe you could attack them and take them by surprise. Or you could try to see if you know what they are, but that could get you spotted and leave you vulnerable.

Instead of attacking or sneaking past, you try your best to identity them from afar, hoping they wouldn't spot you in the mean time.

After a few minutes of hard thinking and remembering back to all the Reaverbots you've heard about you can safely say you've never heard of a Reaverbot like this.

Sure you've heard of other, slimy, disgusting Fish-like Reaverbots before but nothing that matches this description.

You have a limited array of knowledge, but considering how many different types of Reaverbots there are you may have very well discovered a new type!

You have absolutely no idea what it can do, but you should name it so you have something to refer it by other then "disgusting evil fish Reaverbot"

What do you want to call this Reaverbot Bass?

Since most Reaverbots have odd or plain stupid names you decide to keep to this theme and name these new Reaverbots something appropriate. After a couple moments of thinking you decide on "Tri-Angler". Muzzlefish and Gyroife sound cool, but this is a FISH Reaverbot, why would you give a cool name to something that looks like a disgusting fish?

Before you can feel giddy that you just named your first Reaverbot you look up to see two of the newly named Tri-Anglers floating towards you, apparently having spotted you while you were standing around trying to think of a good name for them.

They don't seem to appreciate your hard work as they immediately attack you, firing bursts of something out of barrels on their bodies.

With limited room to move or maneuver you throw yourself up against the nearby wall, the Tri-Angler's attacks missing and spraying the door behind you. Only one comes close to hitting you, the other just fires off into the wall next to it until it's weapon stops firing.

You glance back at the door and see small dents in it from where the Tri-Angler's attacks hit, however it's also very wet. Where they firing super-pressured water at you or something?

Regardless of what they were firing getting hit with it doesn't seem like a good idea. The Tri-Angler floating over the water (Tri-Angler 2) seems like it's still able to attack you, the one floating over the solid ground (Tri-Angler 1) appears to have a problem with it's weapon.

You could fire on the one that could still attack you with your Buster Gun, or you could run up and destroy the closer Tri-Angler with a good kick or punch.

What do you want to do Bass?

There's a 5 foot drop to the water in the channel from ground level and that Tri-Angler is floating 9-10 feet above ground level. The Tri-Angler attempts to float to the right to avoid being hit, but your shot connects with it's flimsy body and blows it out of the air, sending it's smoking exploded remains into the murky waters below it.

Across the room the other Tri-Angler's don't appear to have noticed the battle going on or heard their brethren blown to smithereens. While the other's float around ignorant of the battle, the other attacking Tri-Angler appears to be ready to fight again as it turns towards you and levels out it's barrel to fire.

You look over and see the other Tri-Angler's still haven't moved on you, they float around, unaware you killed two of their comrades without so much as a scratch.

You could try attacking them now, it's obvious they can't take a single shot from your buster gun and since it's obvious they have some issue or limitation in regards to detection, you might be able to shoot the four remaining Tri-Angler's down in rapid succession.

Remember, the ruins aren't intended to be functional as habitation. They're the scattered remains of the Elder System, our ability to move around in them is largely coincidental to their purpose. Of course, what purpose actually is remains ambiguous, since Legends 3 never got made. All we know is that it's probably capable of killing everyone, if the ruins were ever reconnected and activated. Which they were at the end of Legends 2. Which was five years ago, roughly, in this continuity. So the whole planet is basically a bomb waiting to go off. And we're poking around in its mechanisms.

You make your way south through the door and navigate a confusing hallway before heading through another southern door, entering another large room filled with water. This time however there doesn't appear to be any Reaverbots in it.

Water flows in from tunnels on the southern and eastern walls, which flow through channels built into the northern wall, probably connecting to the other rooms in this ruin.

To west you see another door and to the east you see a single chest sitting alone against the wall. There's a gap in the floor where the channel is. There isn't a metal plate to walk over like there is with the other channel to the west.

Still, you could easily jump the gap to get to the chest, but one slip up and you'd end up in the water, or worse, sucked into the channel and carried god knows where.

Light grey is a metal plate that appears to be walkable.

Dark grey is a metal plate that's flat on the wall, but could possibly be rigged to do the same as the light grey after a certain trigger happens.

Both are probably there to allow water through underneath them, and into the 2 drains on the bottom and bottom right.

You're at first tempted to get a running start and hop across the gap to loot the chest, eager to find what new treasure you've stumbled across. However as you realize the out of place peacefulness of the room and how nothing has tried to kill you you stop and realize this seems a little suspicious. Raising your Bustergun you decide to test the waters and fire a regular shot at the chest to make sure nothing is wrong with it.

Flying the short distance to the chest, the ball of energy smacks into the chest and at first doesn't appear to have done anything. Moment later however the Chest begins to shake violent and LITERALLY sprouts a pair of legs and charges straight towards you.

It immediately falls through the gap in the floor between you and it, crashes into the water, and is swept into the channel by the flow of water, the violent snapping of it's lid fading away as it's carrier into the darkness.

You head west and after passing through a small room with another water channel you come to a large room, filled with even larger machinery. Massive pipes cover the length of the ceiling and many more stick out of the floor, connecting this way and that way to the strange but obviously advanced devices that take up a good portion of the room.

There's a lot of condensation coming off the pipes and the room is as wet as the rooms with the open channels of water in them. If you had to take a guess you'd have to say these machines much be a smaller part of this ruin's pump or purification system considering all the water in here is fresh when all the water outside is salty sea water.

A search turns up no physical controls and you doubt you can take any of these machines with you, whole or in pieces, without destroying them and disrupting whatever system they are connected too.

You decide to leave the machines alone and continue exploring, but you call up Ira and ask to talk to Cruiser to tell him about your find.

"A water purifier? Interesting. It's no big deal now, but a couple decades ago before that Holon Tech was studied and produced for populated islands to use, drinkable water was a big issue. The guy who first discovered and reverse engineered that technology got rich off it."

"Is it worth any money now?" You ask.

"Not really, just about every proper settlement has one and disassembling one of those and hauling it topside would probably be and cause more trouble then it's worth. Still, the fact that ruin is purifying water means it's being used for something...or whoever made the ruins was crazy. Ether way keep your eyes peeled for anything weird."

You head North and enter the room you fought the Firushudot's in, finding that it's still empty and the fiendish metal crocs haven't returned. You stay way from the water and head through the door to the west, coming to a small room that seems quite empty until you look to the south and sea what could only be a corpse on the floor.

Even from a glance and all the old diving gear on it, you can tell the body has been here for a while, though the smell has not gotten any better with time.

>CRITICAL SUCCESS

You search and room and while you don't find any traps, you do find a gun in the corner, probably thrown and knocked out of the hands of the dead guy who know lies in the middle of the room. It appears to be an old machinegun of sorts and it's in pretty bad condition, the barrel is bent, the magazine is flattened and what's left of the wooden stock is rotting away. Still, stuff is stuff and you decide to take it for Cruiser to work with.

Going over to the corpse you cover your mouth and give it a good look over while trying not to dwell on the smell for fear of getting sick.

The body is obviously that of a human, he or she probably would have stood around 5,9 or 5,10 though with all the diving gear your estimation on the individuals size might very well be skewed.

You can't see the person's face but a quick glance through the torn up and damaged diving suit shows that the body is skeletal and looking probably wouldn't help you at this point.

Taking out your Walkie-Talkie you call Ira.

"Hey Bass, what did you find now?"

"A body."

"A body? Oh no..."

"Don't worry it's been here for a while considering the gear on him and the fact it's less of a body and more of a skeleton now. I was wondering if you could use your medical knowledge to help me figure out how this guy died."

"Sure, I just need you to check some things for me. It's going to mean looking over the body so I hope you brought gloves..."

You don't have gloves, but you have a spare t-shirt you didn't intend to wear. After a few minutes of Ira's medical questions and manhandling the skeleton Ira's finally able to give you an answer.

"That guy was definitely crushed. There's no way the rip cage or arms would look like that."

"Crushed? But there aren't any traps in this room..."

"Then that probably means there's something in there big enough and strong enough to crush a full grown man with ease. Please be careful!"

"I will. Thanks."

Checking the body one last time you can't find much to take with you. You think about taking the diving helmet, but considering it had a rotting human head in it for a couple years you decide against it and instead take the ruptured oxygen tank with you. It's useless now and kind of heavy, but it fits in your bag and you have a feeling Cruiser might be able to do something with it.

You check the body to try to find some ID, but all you can find is a water proof tube with some faded papers roll up inside that you can't really read. Stuffing them in your bag all that's left to do is pay your respects and move on.

Baring in mind how the Diver died, you continue north walking through a long hallway and coming into another room with, surprise, water in it.

Unlike the rooms before this room is quiet loud. Water rushes in from a large channel in the southern wall, passes underneath the walkway to the eastern door and flows into and down the large channel built into the northern wall.

You have a feeling it goes down because of the constant sound of water crashing on water that is coming from the northern channel. Before you can ponder where the water is going you look in front of you to see two large, multi-legged, and plain nasty looking Reaverbots moving towards you.

You recognize them almost immediately. They are called Kurugurus and they're somewhat comparable to a turtle, if a turtle had jaws to crush and rip peoples legs off with. They're slow and heavily armored, but they can charge very quickly when people get close to them and are infamous for taking more Digger's legs then any other Reaverbot.

Kurugurus have an almost impenetrable shell, but they have a soft underbelly. Problem is you need to flip them to get to it, or if you have explosives just toss them underneath.

How you're supposed to flip them without being made a lot shorter is beyond you.

Still, these Kuruguru's aren't exactly fast, maybe you could leap over them before they notice you.

Since you don't know how to flip one of the Kuruguru's over and you don't want to risk getting your legs bitten off trying to learn, you decide the safest place to be is on their backs. It's not like they have arms or anything so what are they going to do?

Getting a running start towards one of the Kuruguru's (Kuruguru 1) you kick off and leap towards it in the hope of landing on it's back. Due to being pretty wide this is rather easy and you manage to land and steady yourself with very little effort. Quickly the platform like back of the Kuruguru begins to wobble and it soon realizes you're on it's back.

The Kuruguru begins to thrash violently underneath you, but you manage to hold your steady. Lowering your Bustergun you get ready to take a shot at the Kuruguru's eye when you feel a sudden lurch in your stomach as the Kuruguru propels itself high into the air with tremendous power, throwing you off from the sheer force and sending you falling downwards towards the water below.

Desperately you try to straight yourself out, reaching out to grab the ledge of the walkway...

Your shot smashes into the shell of the Kuruguru, but the Reaverbot is unphased, it appears the damage and force of your Bustergun is not enough to flip or penetrate the Kuruguru's shell.

As you realize the ineffectiveness of your Bustergun against the Kuruguru it finally gets within range of you and charges. Leaping up at you, jaws snapping viciously, it attempts to dig it's powerful jaws into your flesh...

(Hmmm, the highest acceptable roll is 15 and the Kuruguru rolled 15. I don't believe in ties in this system. I'll be nice and save Bass from losing a limb. As a rule the defender will always win the tie in Digger Quest)

You move backwards at the last moment and the Kuruguru's crushing metal jaws come mere inches away from clasping onto your right arm, you can hear the two, powerful metal biting parts of the Kuruguru smash together as they miss their target and bite empty air instead.

The Kuruguru falls to the ground, but is quickly getting back to it's many feet. You're nearly backed up against the wall at this point and have even less room to maneuver.

Your Bustergun is totally ineffective against the Kuruguru, you have no effective means of getting to it's underbelly armor, and from the sound of it's jaws if it attacks you it's going to rip off whatever it bites down on.

You can still flee through the western door, or you can stay and try to fight despite all the odds being against you in this fight.

What's it going to be Bass?

We need to get our hands on whatever model buster Megaman Volnut's using. That thing has no problem with Kurugurus. It takes a bunch of hits, but it'll take them down just fine. We should also get armor like his, for the same reason. I've never seen him lose a limb to a Reaverbot bite.

You decide you'd like to keep all your limbs and bolt to the western door, opening it and rushing through the wall way to the other door, spinning around as they close and listen intently, hoping the Kuruguru's won't follow you.

After a good couple minutes of silence you let out a sigh of relief and look around to examine the room. Immediately you notice it's almost totally empty, save for the HUGE door to the south.

The door is not like anything you've come across before. So far most doors haven't even had locks, much less been the size of an entire wall. This one is obviously heavily reinforced and shows no cracks, decay, or weaknesses in it's dark metal construction.

Walking over to it, you spot three large holes in it, almost large enough for a triple set of keys...

You have 1 key, but you need three. Maybe the other 2 keys are somewhere in these ruins.

Normally you'd be overjoyed, however after seeing what happened with the last chest you ran into...well you have a feeling this room is not the treasure trove it seems. There are numerous chests, but there is one at the far back of the room that appears bigger and more important then the others.

Maybe it holds one of the keys?

After a good 30 minutes of poking, prodding, and careful observations you can safely say the room is not booby trapped. The chests however could be regular, crazy, or for all you know stuffed full of explosives.

The large chest obviously seems important, but for all you know that could be a trap too. You could try triggering the chests one by one, but for all you know they could ALL be homicidal and could trigger all at once.

You have a gut feeling there is a key in here somewhere, but at the same time you really doubt there's nothing in this room that won't try to kill you if you do something stupid.

So how do you want to approach things Bass? You need to find that Key...

Reacting quickly you open the eastern door and throw yourself into the hall, the force of the blasts enhancing your momentum and sending you crashing into the adjacent wall.

Despite it hurting the blow hasn't too bad and entering back into the room you see it could have been a lot worse, as all the chests besides the large one were gone, only black scars on the ground were left to mark the existence of the devious chests.

Walking up to the large chest, you do a few quick checks and eventually pop the lid. Reaching inside you pull out another large key, almost identical to the one you found before.

Backing away from the large chest, you keep an eye on it till you leave the room and exist back into the hallway.

Nothing. If you read the modified rules I posted you'd learn that I kind of gave up trying to make the 'organic' experience system work. It was too unbalanced and difficult to maintain for me.

Bass gains 800 experience for his hard work today. He only needs 3200 points to get to level 4. Once he levels up you can spend points on skills, talents, and other such things, it's a lot easier for me.

ADX has a lot of neat concepts, but I'm not sure how well it would work for AGE Quest. Managing the fate point economy might get a little hard for a communally-controlled character. Also, the AGE Builder would be difficult to implement. Either it would be incredibly over-powered or just become set dressing. You should definitely rip some of its rules, especially mecha Generations and the Drive Die, but I think they'd do better tacked onto the existing system than as a complete replacement.

Thinking about it, Legends of the Wulin might work better. Rippling rolls and conditions work nicely to simulate the back and forth of mecha combat, with Lesser Legends and Minions for when a fight doesn't deserve that level of detail. The system for acquiring chi conditions would also work well for the AGE Builder. "Oh, you want to modify your beam cannon to have immense power but consume so much energy that your thruster suffer for it? Great, make me an Engineering roll to create a paired Hyperactivity/Weakness condition." Unique systems that require more detail than a simple stat tweak could be represented as buying new techniques. Chi would represent a general abstracted pool of our remaining endurance, ammunition, energy supplies and willpower. And Destiny Entanglement is great for letting us give mechanical weight to our narrative choices. I think that could actually work pretty well. I'm up for working out some AGE Lore Sheets if you'd like, even. Just give me a few days, I have a project I should finish before I start any major hobby-related work.
