You are Gertrude Pool, Sophomore Class President and new commander of Lafayette Girls Academy’s revived Tankery Team.

You hum the tune of Angel Band as you wash Kitten’s hair under your shower. Yesterday was the last day of Shore Leave, and you’re sure by now that the Academyship Lafayette Girls Academy has left Cherbourg for Atlantic waters. This week is probably going to a bit busy for you, especially today with the student council meeting.

Once your shower is finished, you yawn a bit, checking yourself out in the mirror while Kitten gets dressed. You briefly ponder why everyone seems to consider you attractive. You at least don’t think much of yourself. You have to at least keep yourself in shape-

Whoa.

Wait.

What the hell is that?

You check your neck. It looks to be some kind of bruise. But how? You weren’t-

Wait. Kitten was sleeping with you last night. You did feel a slight tickle-

WAIT.

“Kitten.” Kitten pokes her head into the bathroom, tying up her tie.

“Yeah?”

You blink, pointing to your neck. “I think you might’ve given me a hickey in your sleep.”

Kitten says, “Well.” She blushes a little. “How did that happen.”

“I should ask the same thing,” you say. “But irregardless, I need a way to cover this up.”

You wrap up the school scarf around your neck and settle into your school uniform as well. It’ll go away eventually.

You raise your arms, grinning madly and standing over Kitten as she eats breakfast. “NOW IT’S TIME FOR YOUR REVENGE HICKEY MISS CAROL SMITH-“

“How about no.”

You huff, eating your breakfast. Once you’re done, you hear Nancy knocking on your door. “President! Time for school!”

The both of you exit your dorm to see your staff, looking a bit tired but no worse for ware. Lisa looks at you confusedly. “What’s with the scarf?”

You wave her off. “It’s cold today.”

“It’s 72 degrees.”

“I’m sensitive.”

Lisa shrugs. “Whatever.”

You all leave the dorm buildings.

You say, “Relax, Lisa.” You wag your finger. “A good tank commander needs to be aware of her surroundings, thus in order to facilitate this, I’m reading Where’s Waldo.”

Lisa says, unconvinced of your reasoning, “Is that really the reason you rented it from the Library?”

“No,” you say. “But it is now. I’ve retconned it. Let’s move on.”

You decide to save the money for now. Who knows what you might need later on.

You arrive at the campus to the sight of tired looking students groggily moving on to classes. You yawn a bit as well, tugging on your scarf, careful not to expose your hickey. That’s not going to be fun to explain.

Especially not considering your reputation.

A Professor walks up to you. “Miss Pool.” You blink. This is a surprise. “I have a favor to ask. My wife’s pregnant in the hospital and I need to attend to her now, but I have no time to find a substitute. Would you mind proctoring today’s career surveys for me today? It’s just until lunch. You nod. “Sure, Professor. Good luck to your wife.” The Professor and quickly runs past you to his car. You say, “Alright girls, looks like I’ve got a get out of class free card.”

Kitten sighs. “Lucky you.”

“Hey, the start of this year you didn’t even have to come to school, Kitten,” you say as you pet her hair. “Now, I oughta go. Uh, Ramirez. Would you mind letting the Attendance Office know?” Ramirez nods then walks off to the Attendance office.

You leave your staff then and there walk to the Professor’s classroom. You recognized that Professor thankfully, he was a teacher of English, Freshmen English to be precise. That can’t be fun.

You walk into his classroom and are immediately assailed by Freshmen.

“It’s Gertrude!”

“She looks so pretty today!”

“Oh my goodness!”

“Wow!”

“Such grace!”

You sigh then walk up to the Professor’s desk, where his TA, the Senior Executive Claire Walker is busy browsing her smartphone. She lazily greets you with a, “’Sup.”

“Morning, Claire. I trust you’re well?” You sit at a spare chair, about to take your scarf off. Then you realize why you wore a scarf in the first place. You stop yourself, then lean back, crossing your legs.

“Well, Shore Leave was pretty fun,” she says. “Kinda wish it was two weeks instead of one, get what I mean?”

You nod. “Oh, definitely.”

“Anyway, I hear lots of things about you, Gertrude,” she says, snickering.

“Oh?”

“You’re quite popular with the Freshmen and the Naval Studies kids.” Walker snaps her fingers a bit. “What was it? 100 girls board, 50 couples leave?”

You nod. “Haha. Haven’t heard that one before. Real original, Claire.”

Claire shrugs. “Whatever.” She stands up. “We got some surveys to proctor, but first there’s a couple of things. Which one do you want to do?”

You stand at the podium at the front of the class. “Morning, everyone. My name’s Gertrude Pool, Sophomore Class President. “I will be subbing in for your Professor today, so let’s just begin with attendance.”

Normally, most Freshmen would be chattering or doing other stuff, inattentive to you. But since you’re you, you’ve got their attention the same way a light attracts a moth.

You sigh. “Right.” You begin taking attendance, and all the Freshmen dutifully raise their hands and call Present when they are called. This is getting a bit weird. Goddamn it Freshmen, do Freshmen things.

One of the Freshmen raises her hand. “Gertrude, why are you wearing that scarf?”

“It’s cold outside.”

“It’s 72 degrees.”

“I’m sensitive.”

You finish attendance and then file it into the Professor’s cabinet. Claire walks up to the podium and says, “Right, today’s the day you’re going to be taking a career survey.” You pick up the huge stack of papers, all of them tests for the Freshmen. Claire says, “Please answer questions truthfully. It doesn’t affect your grade and you shouldn’t write your name.”

You pass out the papers to dreamy-eyed Freshmen, then walk back to the desk. Gonna be a while before they all finish.

You might as well catch up on work you’re going to be missing today in English, Math, and Chemistry. You pull out your laptop and start browsing some of the online textbooks, taking some notes in the meantime. Out of the corner of your eye, you see some Freshmen not paying attention to their survey and instead just gazing at your pure pureness.

Eh, at least you look smart.

After a time, the surveys are turned in, and Claire sorts them out at the front in a neat little stack.

“Alright, thanks for taking today’s survey.” She blinks, pausing. “By the way, you all answered honestly right?”

The pause is so pregnant, the Professor’s wife is giving birth early. Claire sighs. “Alright, I suppose I’ll read through a few.” You quickly lean over her shoulder and look at some of the results. The big question is, What do you want to be when you grow up?

A middle school student

Claire rolls her eyes. “Haha. Very funny you guys.” She pulls out another survey.

A ghost

Oh god, your sides. No, don’t laugh, don’t laugh

“Wow, really?” says Claire. She’s getting progressively angrier. She must really care about their futures. She pulls out another survey.

Indiana Jones

Claire slaps the paper down. “That’s not even a good movie!”

Gertrude’s Wife

She looks at you, a bit disgusted. You shrug.

A Science Guy

“WHAT!?”

I don’t want to become a lawyer

Claire tears the survey in half, shouting, “THEN DON’T WRITE ANYTHING!”

Enter college

Claire blinks, pausing. She then immediately topples the podium. “AT LEAST MAKE A JOKE!”

ALARM

You giggle a little at Claire’s expense as she seethes. Time for the next class.

You yawn a bit, continuing to take notes as Claire again says, “Please take this seriously.” She passes on the next career questionnaire to the class of Freshmen, most of whom still look at you with dream-filled eyes and rose colored glasses.

You say, “You may begin.”

You study on for the entire class, occasionally answering a question from a Freshman who’s confused. This proctoring stuff is easy.

Soon, the surveys are done again. Claire, being the masochist she is, decides to again check the What do you want to be when you grow up Questions.

Again, she rages. You decide it’s best left up to the imagination.

The next class comes in. Midway through their surveys, your Chemistry Professor emails you your homework. Since you’re already on a streak of studying, you decide to do it now. Might as well get it out of the way.

“A ‘spess mehreen’ is NOT A CAREER!” Claire screams as she furiously tears up the survey in front of the incredibly stoic class of Freshmen.

“Ask Kitten.”

Lisa narrows her eyes. “Are you gay?”

“No!” You cross your arms, puffing your cheeks.

Ramirez says, “You sure sound gay.”

“I am not!”

Nancy says, “So what’s under the scarf then?”

You say, “A hickey.”

Nancy asks you, “Are you sure-“

“Look, it’s a very long, convulated story, but let’s just say that me and Kitten were sleeping together-“ Lisa interrupts you by laughing. You sigh. “Shut up, Lisa.”

Nancy says, “There’s nothing wrong with-“

“I’m not!” you say. You tighten your scarf a bit, red in the cheeks. “Gawd! You guys just don’t understand me! Don’t you guys have a good friend like Kitten that you’re comfortable cuddling together?” They all shake their heads. “You’re missing out then!”

Lisa says, “Listen, sorry for laughing. I honestly have no problem with you being gay.”

“Well, you know, Lisa, maybe you should consider not thinking of me as gay,” you respond. “Me and Kitten are just that close! We’re comfortable with each other’s bodies!”

Ramirez says, “That’s so gay.”

Nancy nods. “But yes, Lisa is right. None of us have any problems with you if you really are actually gay.”

“Well, I’m not.”

Lisa says, “Bi then?”

“Maybe, whatever.”

You tie your smartphone to the center of the barbell, then lie on your back on the seat and start lifting. Spotting for you is Willie Hanna of the Animation Club.

“Say, why are you wearing a scarf?” she asks.

“It’s cold.”

“It’s 72-“

“I know it’s 72 degrees.” You bring the barbell closer, reading up on history of ancient Egypt. “Anyway, Hanna. How’s your animation coming along?”

Hanna says, “We should be ready by Thursday. We’re just putting the finishing touches on it. Sorry about keep it delayed for so long, but you know, quality is king!”

You nod, gritting your teeth and pushing yourself. “Thanks.” You ask her, “So, you see the Tankery Match?”

Hanna nods, smiling. “It was exhilarating!”

“Interested in doing Tankery?”

“Unfortunately no,” says Hanna. “We’re kind of in… some strife at the moment?”

“Why’s that?”

She sighs. “The Anime Club is besieging us.”

“Besieging?”

Hanna nods. “Besieging.”

“… How?”

“Eh, don’t ask. But basically they want us to make anime for them and we don’t really want to, so they’re trying to starve us out of our building.”

You quirk your brow. Might be worth looking into.

The Command Tower isn’t that big a walk from the campus, and you wind up there in good time. Your staff will probably be coming in behind you in a few minutes. You enter in, say hello to Kate, then walk up to the Senior Offices.

Hopefully you won’t be here for long.

You open the door and AH SHIT CHICK-FIL-A YOU’RE GOING TO BE HERE FOREVER

Fairless rests her very very ample and smooth legs on the desk, smoking a cigarette and reading a book. She’s the only one in the room. She looks at you, causing you to flinch. That gaze of her’s could pierce the armor of your M4A1E8. “Gertrude. Good to see you. Why are you wearing a scarf?”

“It’s cold.”

“You’re hiding a hickey aren’t you.”

You blush intensely. “How’d-“

“It’s pretty obvious,” says Fairless simply. She adjusts her glasses a bit. “Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone. So how’s your day going?”

You say, “’When you get to know her’ is really damning with faint praise, you know?”

“Second order of business,” says Fredendall. “Clubs. I’ll just let you guys handle this on your own.” She pulls out her phone and starts goofing off.

Fairless sighs, putting her cigarette out and flicking it into a nearby bin. “Alright, clubs. We have a proposal to start a Skycraft Team by the Aviation Studies Club. They claim to be already funded and already have the necessary materials. They just need the official support of the Lafayette Girls Academy Sports Program.”

One of the Seniors, Henrietta Carnegie says, “How about no?”

“Well,” you say. “Look at how Tankery’s doing. We’re really going into this World Tournament business kicking and running. Another team like Tankery like say, Skycraft, would really help us in terms of prestige.”

Fairless says, “Problem is there are no significant Skycraft tournaments running at the moment. The Skycraft World Tournament isn’t until the summer. And we can’t sustain a team off of friendly matches and small scale tournaments forever.”

Fredendall says, “Besides, Skycraft’s lame.”

“Well, they already have the materials. What should they just do? Sit on their asses until the summer?”

Fredendall shrugs. “I suppose we could sell them.”

Oh god no.

Fairless narrows her eyes at you, causing you to flinch and blush a bit. She sighs, “Actually, Lilah. Suppose we do start a Skycraft team. Perhaps it might be worth a look.”

Fredendall looks at Fairless, skeptically. “Eh?” Fairless glares at her, and she flinches a bit. Fredendall quickly recovers then, “I suppose a Skycraft team is worth looking into. Maybe a demonstration would be in order? See if their planes are actually working?”

You nod. “Sure!”

Fredendall smiles. “Excellent!” She checks the calendar on her phone. “I and Fairless happen to be free on Friday, the 1st of November. So, we’ll have a neat little demonstration of your dinky little planes, yeah?”

“Yeah,” you say back.

She checks the time. “Oooh, whoopsie, look at the time. I gotta get going.” She stands up, packing her things.

Carnegie asks her, “Where are you going?”

Fredendall says, “I have a little appointment attend to. My father’s coming in to visit the school. I gotta welcome him like the good little daughter I am!” She walks out, “Ciao!”

Fairless sighs. “Well then. Let’s handle club affairs then.” She stands up, “Claire, hand out the forms will you? Henrietta, work with Lisa will you?”

Claire hands you a form. “This is the budget requests for money from the class treasury. Spend wisely.”

Betty nods. “Oh yeah, I have their club request form. They’re a Junior Club.”

Fairless says, “Since their elected leader is a Junior and more than 75% of its members are juniors, they are classified as a Junior Club. Why do you care, Gertrude?”

“Just, you know. Wondering if you’re going to approve them?”

You work quietly on the forms, stamping and approving various club requests. You also work with Nancy on scheduling various summer events as well. Most clubs are in need of materials for the Halloween Fair coming up.

Claire says, “Theatre Tech is probably going to draw a lot of money in like last year. You see what they did with their haunted house?”

Henrietta nods. “They’re masters at the art of making a girl scream.”

Regardless, you yawn, continuing to work at leisurely pace. Ramirez helps you file through forms as well. She takes a huge chunk of papers off the stack and starts writing off stuff. Part of a Student Council’s duty was to also sign off on various Naval Studies Merchant logistics reports, which you assume was what Ramirez was doing.

Then, you receive a phonecall.

>Fairless nods again, then looks over at you, glaring. “So, Gertrude. Think you can start your Sophomore Class fund and set aside 5,000 Dollars for it?”

> SET ASIDE 5,000 DOLLARS?
> Note: This money can be brought back into your regular Tankery budget at anytime, but having a low treasury will shake your classes’ faith in you.

It also says nothing of it not being fucking enough, in fact, considering that our original budget was 5,000 and the first place, and the fact that was the requested amount in the first place, implys that yes, it was enough. Not to mention again that it gives Fredendall a juicier target, and we won't have to worry about this shit until the next budget meeting.

I'm sorry, but the fact that your argument hangs by the characters failing to mention that it is "sufficient" when it's the amount they requested in the first place should tell you something about its quality.

“Alright, let’s go Kitten. Good night guys.”

Lisa says, “Sorry.”

You and Kitten turn around and head back to the Command Tower. You walk inside to find that the population has dwindled. Only a few people are still about on the graveyard shifts. You walk up to the dark empty hallway and knock on the door to the Senior Offices.

“Come in.” You and Kitten walk inside to see Fairless. She’s taken off her blazer, her tie, and rolled up her sleeve. The top buttons on her blouse are undone, revealing an incredible cleavage. She appears to have almost burned out that cigarette between her lips. “Oh, Gertrude. What are you doing back?”

You shrug. “Oh, just seeing if I could anything to help.”

Fairless sighs, standing up from her seat and walking over to you. She crosses her arms, then looks at Kitten, who immediately blushes, shrinking under her gaze. “Ah, Kitten. Nice to see you again.” She looks over to you, casually pointing at Kitten. “She the one who give you that hickey?”

Kitten fumes. “What- I- Who- Fuck! I mean-“ She tugs on her own hair. “I-I… We were just sleeping together-“

Fairless says, “You’re not helping yourself.”

Fairless assigns the duty of filing forms into correct positions in the filing cabinets. Easy work. Only problem is A. there are hundreds of forms and B. there are ten filing cabinets with six separate shelves.

Kitten rubs her back after filing away the 50th form. “Jeez.”

You say, “Fun, isn’t it?”

“Well, I admire you for doing stuff like this, Trudy.”

You nod. “Fairless,” you say as you look over to see her dropping another box of papers down on the table next to you. “You must have the patience of a saint to do all this by yourself.”

“Well if no one does it,” she says as she flicks her spent cigarette into the bin, “Things go to shit. But really, thank you for coming by to help. You didn’t have to.”

You wave her off. “Hey, since you shut up about the hickey. Not to mention helping us out with other stuff too.” You take off your scarf and let your neck breathe freely. “I think you deserve a bit of respite.”

Fairless nods. “Of course.”

You take off your blazer, working intensely in filing, matching, filing, matching, etc. It’s not a fun job but someone’s gotta do it. Kitten meanwhile has pretty much stopped working and is lying on her back, groaning. “Ugh! It’s so much work!”

You say, “Kitten, this isn’t even your final form.” You stand over her, placing your hands on your hips. “Come on, get up. Don’t make me give you a hickey like you did me.”

Kitten narrows her eyes, frowning at you. “You wouldn’t dare.”

You kneel down over her, grinning. “I would!” Kitten’s eyes shoot wide open, and she immediately tries to sit up, only to be forced down by the wrists.

“No! Wait wait!” She laughs as you gently bite her neck. “GOD! NO AHAHAHA! STOP STOP!”

The both of you look over at Fairless, who simply looks at the both of you, expressionless. A lit cigarette sits between her fingers.

“Don’t stop on my account,” she says.

Both of you stop on her account, blushing intensely. “Sorry,” you say.

Since that episode, you decide to try and get it into Fairless’ head that you’re not gay. “So, Fairless. Who do you think is going to win re-election?”

Fairless shrugs. “Eh. I don’t really follow student politics that closely. I just work.”

“Really?” you say. “How’d you get elected then?”

“I originally wanted President, but Fredendall beat me by a 20% margin.” She snaps her fingers. “By the way, it’s totally okay if you’re gay-“

“I’m not!” you say. “Kitten and me are just really good friends, we’re comfortable with each other!”

Fairless nods. “That I can understand.” She looks over at Kitten, who immediately turns away. “And I’m guessing you’re not gay either.” Kitten shrugs at that.

You ask, “What about you? Not to pull you out of the closet or anything-“

“Bisexual,” she says. “Though admittedly, I lean towards girls.”

You nod. “Ah, that’s cool.” You sigh, arching your back a little as you walk back to the cabinets. You’re almost finished. “Kitten, mind putting on a match for us? The lack of background noise is killing me.”

You’re almost done.

You yawn as you finally put the last of the files in order, then place them in their correct shelf. No more colorcoding for you. You’re pretty much done.

Fairless says, “Excellent work, Gertrude. I’m impressed.”

You nod. “Of course, Fairless.” You stand up and work out the kinks in your back and CRACK OH SHIT THAT FEELS AMAZING. “Actually,” you snap your fingers. “Fairless, I think it’s unfair to call you Fairless. Do you mind if I call you Bernadette instead?”

She shrugs. “Go ahead.”

“Cool, so Bernadette then, or would you prefer-“

“I don’t prefer Bernie.”

“Okay, just making sure.” You look over at Kitten, who’s fallen asleep, sitting in a chair. She slumbers soundly, Bernadette’s blazer wrapped around her shoulders. She’s been like that for the past half hour or so. You check the time. Just about 10 O’Clock. “Better head home from here then.”

Fairless nods, “Sounds good.”

The both of you pack up your things. You grab Kitten let her ride on your back as you hit the lights then shut the door.

You and Fairless leave the Command Tower and make your way home.

And that's it because putting in applique armor is overkill. It's pretty solid already after we change out the turret.

Armored side skirts for protection on the vulnerable tracks would be the better investment for it, though it won't be affordable right now.

Hell, the William Adams match showed just how much we might need those, even for the other tanks, since they scored plenty of Mobility Kills on us.

> Talk with Fairless

“So, Fairless, what are you going to do after graduation?”

“I’ve got a full run lined up at Princeton. Then after that, I’ll head back home to Los Angeles and head into the film industry.”

You ask her, “Doing what?”

She shrugs. “Oh, don’t particularly care.”

“Does Princeton have a nice film program?”

“Dunno,” she says. “Don’t particularly care either. Film industry’s pretty easy to get into if you know the right people, and my dad knows a guy who can line me up a job doing make up.”

You tilt your head confusedly. “Make up?”

Fairless says, “I like make up.” She looks at you. “What about you?”

You sigh. “Oh… well. I don’t know. I mean- I really don’t know.” You think on it. The mortal fear of not knowing what to do with your life.

Fairless hums a bit. “How about some advice?” You blink. You could use some advice. “My mom used to tell me that not knowing what she wanted to do in her life was the best thing ever.”

You ask, “Why?”

“Because then, she could do whatever she wanted.” She gestures lazily. “Of course, she became a housewife, but- Point is, Gertrude, you shouldn’t kill yourself over not knowing what to do with your life. Sometimes life throws you a curveball that you can’t get. So it’s always healthy to leave room for… improv.”

You nod, taking it. “I see.”

Fairless nods. You can see hints of a smile, barely there, but there. “Good. Sorry for preaching. That’s just my opinion anyway.”

You arrive at the Sophomore dorms, and Fairless bids you farewell, walking away into the night.

With some difficulty, you get through the door and then lay Kitten on the bed. You stretch, letting your bones click themselves back into place after all that rigorous administration work. It’s not a particularly fun job, but someone has to do it.

You yawn quietly as you start disrobing Kitten to prepare her for bed. First her blazer, then her skirt, then her blouse.

“Hm…” Kitten’s eyes flutter open. “Are we done?”

You quietly say, “Yeah, we’re done, Kitten. Get some rest.”

Kitten nods, “Does Fairless think we’re gay?”

“Probably,” you say. Kitten whines a little. “Relax, she’s nice. Don’t worry.” You start taking off your own clothes to settle in for the night. “I’ll crash here with you, if you don’t mind.”

“Don’t wanna give you another hickey…”
