So, being sick aside (fucking flu) It's been an ok week.

Well, other than me not having time to play any WoT and a distinct lack of platoonmates, but that's neither here nor there.

Archives are here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20witches%201989

And if you don't want to mess with those, just ask in thread, either I or one of the guys will get ya sorted.

++

Your nightmares are back- with a vengeance.

You'd thought you'd gotten past them when they didn't crop up after Berlin- but you don't really remember a lot about Berlin, truth be told. You haven't outed that yet- no need to have anyone else worry about you, but a lot of the details, well. You flew out, you remember most of that, but after you engaged, it's all a hazy blur. You vaguely remember firing the tesla cannon a couple times, that's about the extent of it.

But there weren't any new nightmares. You've gotten the best sleep you had in months here, so far, up till now. You're hopeful this is just a one-off thing, but you're not so sure.

You're also not real sure you want to tell anyone about them. Even though you're not a direct combat asset anymore, being removed like you have been from the line for this sideshow, everyone still has plenty to worry about, and your mental state is workable, if not perfect.

1/3 ( i think)
>>
You're fortunate in that the lounge area, downstairs, has several couches and a fairly large screen TV- if not as large as a modern one, then fairly sizable, all the same. Katsumi has been making noise about spending some money to renovate the lounge and the squadron halls, but you're not sure anything will come of it. As it is, yours is the only full squadron in the building- the place has never housed more than one at a time anyway, you're told. Usually one full squadron then a group of individuals from all different units and nationalities, there for different reasons. Kind of like now.

Late night British TV isn't really your thing- fortunately, the castle has credible satellite, and you're able, after some fiddling, to find a us network, playing the new star trek. Something to do with temporal rifts and two enterprises- you've been out of date, missing almost the entire last season, what with the start of the war and all. Kind of a shame, you think, but you're sure you'll be able to catch up later.

“Trouble sleeping, Commander Bishop?” A witch asks, sitting down on the couch opposite you, indicating the TV and the book behind you. You mentally curse- you didn't hear her coming and you were kind of enjoying the time alone.

You nod. “A little. Anxious to get back in the air.” It's not entirely a lie, and you're not sure how much you need to be telling anyone- plus, you don't even recognize her.

She smiles. “I see. Oh, I'm sorry, I have you at a disadvantage, don't I? I'm Marie O'Hare, here from Annapolis.”

You frown. “So you work with Lon-”

She laughs gently and shakes her head, interrupting you. “You can't really work with a woman like that, Mr. Bishop. You deal with her and work around her, but not with her.”

2/3
>>
You make her out to be somewhere in her early 30s- which means she's probably in her 40s. She didn't give her rank, so either it's very high, or very low- and either way, entirely superfluous. She's a matron, and that carries a lot more weight here than rank does.

“Hope you don't mind Star Trek.” You say, changing the subject and motioning to the TV.

She laughs again and shakes her head. “Not at all! My daughter and I used to watch it sometimes when she was home. She's a marine, out in Okinawa.”

“Ah. My sister's in the corps too.” You say, thankful it's a commercial and hoping she won't want to chat when the show's back on. “Based up in Japan proper though.”

The matron nods. “I saw when I had a look through your file. Quite an impressive family record you have. Of course, I'm more interested in you.”

You quirk an eyebrow and look over at her- noting that she's openly appraising you, and doesn't seem the least bit shy about it.

“Oh gosh, that didn't come out the way I meant it at all!” She says with a laugh. “Though I'll bet thats why so many younger witches were interested in coming along as our aggressor.” She pauses, looking at you with a bit of a grin.

“For what it's worth, I'm sorry for Longstreet's behavior.” She says as the commercial break ends, “She's not used to being turned down like that.”

Right.
>>

isnt that pretty meta?

Also, just because they're both Annapolis matrons doesn't mean that they're BOTH bitches. People within the same institution can and will be different

>>

Matrons *Are* politicians. They are the nominal heads of the witch heirarchy and therefore exercise political power to achieve their goals. Even moreso given that witches are a pseudo-autonomous multinational organisation on certain levels.

And of course all politicians are subhuman scum. I shouldn't even have to say this.

They're like wizards: disproportionate amounts of power and no sense of right or wrong.
>>

This is a pretty big stretch for a series that revolves around flying girls in their underwear?

Not everyone is so one-dimensional especially in this series so labeling her as evil right off the bat is kind of rude.

You're all forgetting she's the daughter of an illusion and thus doesn't really exist anyway.

>. Hell, he suspended habeus corpus. That is a HUGE deal.

...in a time of rebellion. You can argue whether or not they were justified in doing it until the end of time for all I care, but during a time of rebellion is one of the specific cases where the Constitution says Habeus Corpus *can* be suspended.
>>
>>30021859

>>

teddy opened the door to many of the problems we have now. even though i don't know if he knew what he was doing at the time. [x] “She already did the damage. There's no way Merlin will cooperate with her now.”

You shrug as best you can from your semi-prone position. “To be honest, she already did the damage. There's no way Merlin will cooperate with her now.” You state, mentally adding that you won't either.

For her part, the matron just nods, as if expecting the answer. “It might surprise you to hear, Frank- can I call you Frank?- that when she got back and gave her version of events, none of us believed her. Like I said, hon, she's used to getting her way. She never expected Samantha to respond like that.”

“I can't say I blame her. Merlin, I mean.” You grumble. “I've heard plenty of stories.”

Marie nods, sadly. “She was- well. There's no excuse for how she was treated. Some witches believe a girl's worth is in how strong her talent is, how strong she is. I never did. Talent isn't always something we can test for. If I had been there when she was tested, maybe we wouldn't be having this conversation right now.”

“For better, or worse?” You ask, somewhat drily.

She laughs at that. “I suppose that depends on who you'd ask. For what it's worth, I'm sorry she was the one you had to deal with.” She laughs again. “Can you believe that old hag wanted to come here instead of me? Even tried to pull rank.”

“That probably wouldn't have gone so well.” You note. “Her coming here, I mean.”

“Oh goodness no.” She says, laughing again. “Her only interest in your Samantha is how and why she's suddenly exhibiting... well. This.”

She pauses. “And how it can be done for other witches. Her line of thought is, according to her, that if a witch as weak as Samantha was can suddenly do this, what would happen if a stronger one was given the chance?”

1) Because there is no constitutionally guaranteed right to secession, and it was upheld in the Supreme Court in 1869 that secession is unconstitutional.
2) Because their "Southern Livelihood" depended on slave labor which in itself is a humanitarian and ethical no-no.
3) There's a difference between forcing people to stay in a group they want no part of and forcing people to conform to a certain ethical and humanitarian standard. That's not facism that's basic human decency. If you don't like a certain group of people, there is and was nothing stopping you from moving to another state or country. What happened during the Civil War was completely different and the logic presented is completely non-applicable.

[x] “And what's your theory?”

“So I take it you don't agree?” You ask, turning on the close captioning. At least you can read the show- apparently it's an alt-universe thing, and the dead chief of security, who you always thought was kinda cute, is back, but she's going to go with the other ship or some shit. You've lost track. “What's your theory?”

Marie sighs. “I don't know, hon. It's... complex. Prior to Tanana, no one thought you were anything other than a highly talented young man. After Alaska... and Japan... and now Berlin, it's pretty clear you're something else.”

You chuckle. “You almost sound like you're impressed.”

“Oh, but I am!” She says. “You might not be a witch, Frank, but you're still a very interesting young man to us.” She smiles. “Male talents are always hard to study- and honestly, there's not that much interest in them. They're too... subtle.”

“Until now.” You state.

She nods. “Yes, until now. Samantha's talents and abilities were almost nonexistent, hon. You have to understand that she could barely manifest her familiar, let alone what she's doing now. Somehow, working with you, she's either been able to tap into a source of strength she wasn't able to before, or...”

“Or she's right and I'm some weird kind of sparkle battery.” You say.

Marie nods. “Or that. Or it could be some combination of the two- or some third option. It's possible that you two are a gestalt, somehow. If you are, imagine how exciting that could be! You'd be the first talent like that ever discovered.”

You can't think of anything to say- instead opting to watch the final few minutes of the show in relative quiet.

“So,” Marie asks, as the credits start to roll at the end “Do you plan to fly today?”

[] “Merlin said the jet should be ready to go today, so we'd planned on it.”
[] “Not really, there's still airspace issues to take care of and I'm not a huge fan of local tower procedure.”

[x] “Merlin said the jet should be ready to go today, so we'd planned on it.”

You nod. “Merlin said the jet should be ready to go today, so we'd planned on it.”

Marie smiles. “I'm glad to hear it. I'm sure you'll have some company up there- don't let those girls pull you into anything you don't want to do.” She says, standing up. “I'm going to go back to my bed. It was nice finally getting to meet you, Frank. I hope we'll be able to talk alone more often.”

She pats you on the arm as she walks by, and you're pretty sure she's putting that sway in her step on purpose. You elect to let it pass without comment.

You eventually doze off on the couch, the TV still muted. You're woken all too shortly later by Slider.

“There you are.” She says, throwing a flight bag full of your gear- including your heavy ass helmet- right on your chest. “Hurry up and change, I'm tired of dealing with every bitch in this joint.”

“Thafuq?” You grunt, pulling a clean flight suit down from off your face and looking at her.

“Long story short, every witch in this place has figured out you're flying today. Half of them are demanding your flight plan, and the other half are planning to ambush you on your way down to the hangar. I'd let them do it, too, just to see you have to answer all the questions, but I'm not going to do that to Merlin.” She says, planting her fists on her hips. “If it was just you, you'd be screwed.”

“That almost sounds like a better option.” You say, gathering your gear. “Is it an offer?”

“You wouldn't know what to do if it was.” She snorts. “Go get changed, then come see me, ok? I'll have your weather briefing and our maps for you. We're cleared into almost every bit of airspace between here and the front, except over London and Paris, but you'll want to talk to Ice anyhow, she's got a more restricted list for us, mostly over the channel and east Anglia.”

You nod. “Anything else?”

“Nothing. Though, listen.” She leans in close. “Don't fuck this up. This isn't California, and it's sure as shit not the Sara. There's a lot of eyes on you, Frank, and they're looking for the shit you did over Berlin and Alaska, ok?”

You open your mouth to retort, but she holds a finger to it. “No. I don't want to hear it. Just say ok.”

You nod. “ok.”

“Good boy. Just do what you do, ok? But watch the insane shit, Frank. You and Merlin might think it's natural and normal and just fine, but it's creepy as hell. Some of these bitches are going to try to push your buttons. Don't let them.”

“Something going on I ought to know?” You ask. “Some secret camp for guys like me or something? Bullet in the back of the head?”

Slider shakes her head. “No, and watch who you joke like that with. The matrons here want one thing- they want you and Merlin at an academy. This is the best they're going to get- unless they can prove you're at risk here. All it takes for them to do that is see what you looked like getting out of your jet after Berlin. Or one badly timed joke they can use as proof you've cracked.”

“So...wait. Do what I do, but don't?” You ask, confused.

“Dial it back, asshat.” Slider hisses at you. “No one wants to see you leave, even if we know it means you'll be safe stateside. Stick with Ice or Katya, make it seem like you're a couple. You and Ice are cute enough together no one will question it, and Katya's got a vicious streak in her that no one will touch it if they think it's hers. That'll at least keep that shit in check. Now go change.”

[x] Got it, thanks Slider.

You nod. “Got it, thanks Slider.” You say, standing up, your arms full of the contents of your locker- how'd she even get in there, anyway? “I do have one question though.”

“What?” She asks, sighing. “You don't have all morning, you know.”

“Can't I just pretend to be your boyfriend?” You say. “I mean, you've got those shotguns and-”

She hesitates a split second- you'd have missed it, if you didn't know what to look for. “And no one would believe it anyway. You're not quite what people expect to see with me, you know? Now quit dickin' around and go change.”

Feeling you've pushed your luck enough with her, you find the nearest convenient privacy- one of the rooms downstairs, under the building proper. It's long been disused for anything other than a storeroom- stacked mattresses lie along one wall, while crates of paper sit along the other. Slider's warning echoing in your head, you move one of the mattresses before changing- you're almost disappointed that you didn't need to.

You stow your helmet in the flight bag, strapping on your thigh board and clipping on your rescue vest- damn thing went through another redesign, you think. Finally, you pull out your gloves- someone must have saved them- you notice a new patch done where the leather palms were starting to separate from the nomex. You'll have to ask about that, you think, stuffing them into the collar of your vest.

Finally you move the mattress and open the door- noticing the scuff of rapidly retreating footsteps. You almost wonder who they belong to, then just shake your head and head back upstairs, meeting Slider.

“Ready to go?” She asks. “C'mon, Merlin's down there with Kenji. He's a nice enough guy, but without Kat, he's going to get overwhelmed.”

[x] “You got my weather reports and those airspace maps?”

“You got those maps and weather reports?” You ask. “I don't want to get caught out.”

She nods, handing you the sheets. “Yeah, here.”

You flip through them quickly, following her down to the hangar level- the island is honestly a hell of a fortress, you think idly- the passages you're walking through have been cut through the rock and are probably well-reinforced behind their paneling. There's no elevator though, just a stairwell that leads down the several flights to the hangar- it'd be a bitch to get anything from the castle proper down these stairs, but there's no reason to, most of the heavy items either come in via the runway or dock anyway.

The weather describes a pretty decent day- above the cloud deck. Below it, it's cold, raining, and generally shit. On the up side, cold air tends to enhance your jet's thrust, which will hopefully make taking off easier. Despite your words to mav, the runway is still awful short. You're not worried about the wet, so much, but there's no real room for screw up, unless you want to end up on the rocks below.

1/3 (Probably)
>>

Whoever designed this place must have hated pilots, you think to yourself for the eight hundredth time.

True to Slider's words, there's a small gaggle of witches- you identify no fewer than seven different uniforms- standing near your wyvern. Kenji's taken up a post at the nose ladder, while Merlin looks to already be in the cockpit- her section of the mirrored golden canopy is shut, so it's hard to tell.

“Samantha completed her walk around, Commander Bishop.” Kenji says, saluting- you return it and nod.

“I take it everything was fine?” You say, accepting the maintenance form from him and giving it a glance- flawless, as usual.

He nods. “Yes sir. She told me you'd still do one of your own.”

“Of course.” You say, starting at the nosewheel and walking back towards the tails. Slider follows along- watching you and the gaggle of witches in equal measure.

“You taking notes, Slider?” You ask, chuckling.

“Laugh it up, fuzzball.” She says. “The matrons have been making noise about having us backseat for you, to see if whatever you do for Merlin, you can do for us. I figured I might as well learn.”

You shrug. “Well,” You say, sticking your head inside an intake and fishing the penlight out of your shoulder pocket to shine it around, looking for debris or loose paneling or anything that could come free in flight and get ingested. “Should I narrate?”

She snorts. “Sure thing, ass. What are you doing now?”

“Checking the intakes.” You respond. “Someone could do something retarded, like leave an inkstick in here, and bam. There goes a multimillion dollar turbine blade.” You exit the intake, satisfied. “Nothing in that one, let's continue.”

2/3
>>
Your weapons bays are empty- no surprise there. “The cannons are loaded, sir.” Kenji says. “Samantha insisted.”

“Good on her.” You say, looking up at the wing's pivot point and looking over the flaps. “Checking the pivot and flaps. You can't really inspect them up close, but if something stands out, it's a good sign something's wrong.” You say, continuing your narration.

“Like?” Slider asks.

“Like fluids that shouldn't be there, visible damage, that sort of thing. We won't find any, but you want to look anyway. Hydraulics are fourth string backups for us, but you still want them if you need them.”

The rest of the inspection goes the same- you give a short description of what you're doing, but you don't go in depth- there’ll be time for that later. Finally satisifed, you nod and sign off on the maintenance sheet- accepting responsibility for the aircraft from here until the crew chief signs off on it when you return.

You climb up into the cockpit, glad you don't have to watch your feet anymore- Merlin mentioned an improved sensor array, but you didn't see anything new on the way up.

You plug yourself into the intercom almost as soon as you sit down, noting that your board is already coming to life, the MFDs cycling rapidly as Merlin checks her own systems.

“H-hi Frank. Did you sleep well?” She asks as you start belting in.

[x] “Yeah. Started catching up on my Star Trek.”

Sometimes, you remind yourself, your RIO is a sixteen year old girl with confidence issues that, according to everyone else, practically worships you. Telling her that you're worried you might have a few cracks at the edges probably isn't real smart, especially not right now.

“Yeah,” You say, sounding convincing, you hope. “Started catching up on my Star Trek.”

“I didn't k-know you liked star trek.” Merlin says, sounding surprised.

“Eh.” You state, hitting your canopy controls and looking back over your shoulder as you manipulate the stick and pedals, watching the tailerons and flaps respond to the input. “I'm not like, a huge fan, but I enjoy it enough, yeah.”

“K-Kenji and I were going to watch some tapes of it d-dad sent me.” She says. “M-maybe you could join us?”

“We'll see after the flight. How's everything feel?” You say. “Ready to light the fires?”

“Y-yeah.” She responds. “We're starting from internal APU.”

1/2
>>
You don't respond, instead settling back as the rising whine of your turbines spinning up pierces through the cockpit and your helmet. You can't detect much of a difference in their sound, honestly, and don't have fuel gauges up front anymore anyway. You could dial an MFD over, but right now, you don't see any reason to.

Rolling out of the hangar, you note that the tarmac is slightly slicker than you'd like, though that won't matter much when you're rolling. Still, you settle way back along the runway, almost up against the wall, with just minimum blast distance between you and it- and you're still pretty sure your afterburner is going to scorch it.

Still, you're excited. It's good to get back in the air after so long, and even the rain can't put a damper on your mood. “You ready back there, kiddo?”

“J-just waving to Kenji.”

You pause. “Merlin, isn't the canopy one way?”

“Y-yeah. But he knows.”

You sigh, trying not to laugh. “Ah, young love.”

She doesn't respond- though you're pretty sure she's blushing almost in the infrared now. You advance the throttles forward, relishing in the roar of the jets as more and more fuel is fed to them. Finally, you crack them into the afterburner range, releasing the breaks with the toe of your boots and rocketing down the runway.
>>
And that's it for the night!

Kind of funny, actually, the whole civil war thing that went on in here- I've been re-watching the Ken Burns series on that. Good show, i suggest it.

Also: ran longer than I'd initially thought we were going to, though now I'm hoping I didn't ruin myself for work tomorrow. Some of the longer lags between updates were me being sick- sorry. I'm sure that's a mental image you wanted, right? haha.

Oh, that reminds me. There may be a schedule change around here, and we may start running Thursday. This is because of work- I'll keep you guys posted with the twitter.

Anyway, gents, as always, I hope you enjoyed, and we'll be back next week- Tuesday, as usual, then from there I'll let you know. Cheers guys!

"I didn't know you guys liked Star Trek," Frank said. Ice and Slider were on either side of him, a little closer than he expected, but it was unnaturally cold in the rec room.

"It's... interesting!" Ice lied, badly. She scootched a bit closer to Frank.

"Oh yeah..." Slider rolled her eyes. "I'm sure you'd just love being tied up by such interesting sci-fi."

"Hey!"

It was a pretty interesting episode, and they managed to watch in silence. As the show came to a finish, Frank was avidly aware that Ice and Slider were definitely clinging to him. In the background, he swore he could hear Barin tower granting him permission to launch.

"So Frank..." Ice said quietly, pulling herself almost on top of him. She wasn't wearing her usual uniform shirt. The white sweater she'd chosen managed to only enhance her bust. "I have a problem you can help me with."

"We have a problem," Slider corrected. When Frank looked to her, lustterror pounding in his veins, he noticed that the only thing protecting her modesty whatsoever was her tail.

'How does that even WORK?!'

"We need it, Frank," Ice whispered, tearing off her sweater and revealing ropes tied in a very suggestive fashion. Idly he wondered if she'd managed that by herself, or if Slider had helped her out.

"What do you ladies need?" Frank asked nervously, as the two women climbed atop him, pressing him into the couch.

'ohshitohdamnohFUCK' The pilot was panicking, very much unlike a pilot should be acting in a situation. If they wanted the guns of the Navarrone, he was more than equipped and ready to give them what they wanted...

As they descended upon him, lips glistening with drool, Frank settled in for a long night.

"AWAY FROM MY BUTCHER, YOU FILTHY CAPITALISTS!"

The wall behind the television exploded, sending stone and mortar flying into the room. The voice was distorted by the ringing in his ears, but there was no mistaking the silhouette outside of the hole in the wall.

"IT'S HER!" Slider snarled, already leaping forward, ready to defend the prize she'd almost claimed.

"Back off, pinko! He's ours!" Ice snapped her fingers, encasing the entire room in frost. From A bridge of ice seemed to erupt under her feet, propelling her towards the interloper.

"My love! My love my love my love!" Konstantina Stalinka shouted. "I will save you! They know not whom they are stealing from!"

Stalinka is an impressive sight, adorned in what appears to be full body armor that vaguely represented the shape of a Nosferatu. It each arm, she wielded what appeared to twin GAU-8s, on the wings of her armor was a full compliment of the latest Superior Soviet Air To Air Missiles. The war had come to Barin at last.

"You can't have him! He's ours!" Ice screamed, the ice bridge coalescing around her to form a similar armor, reminiscent of an F-14. With a wave of her hand, she fired a missile of ice, in the shape of an Agile, at Stalinka. At her side, her body wreathed in shadow, was Slider, matching her wing witch motion for motion and launching her own missile.

The resulting roar of the twin cannons deafened Frank, but he saw everything in perfect clarity. Ice caught every single round directed at her with small magic circles; Slider's shadows seemed to swallow them whole. Backing dropping the gun pods, Stalinka's armor folded around her protectively, repelling the incoming missiles, spinning away from the castle and blasting towards the sky in full afterburner.

"IF YOU WANT MY BUTCHER," Stalinka roared, "THEN COME AND CLAIM HIM FROM ME IN COMBAT!"

Ice and Slider pursued, a sword in Slider's hand, frost trailing from Ice's hands. Frank stood in shock, running towards the hole and leaping through, swimming awkwardly through the night sky.

"No! She'll destroy you both!" Frank cried out.

"SHE CAN'T DESTROY LOVE!" Ice sobbed, turning to Slider. "ICE SWORD 2!"

"Got it!"

Stalinka's Nosferatu was suddenly encased in a small glacier in mid air as Slider suddenly appeared right next to her, having performed a perfect vertical slash with her sword. After several more cuts, the glacier slid apart into even thirds.

"It's OVER!" Slider announced.

"IT IS NEVER OVER!" Stalinka shrieked, her armor converted back into it's humanoid shape. "ONLY I MAY ENJOY HIS HANDS!" A golden field of light erupted around her, her eyes glowing bright red. The shockwave sent Frank flying back towards the castle, through the castle.

He found himself falling towards the dreadnaught once more, spiraling around masers and missiles. Only this time, he had no fighter, no Merlin, it was just him, naked versus the beast below.

Arms wrapped around him from behind, and he spun around as best he could, finding Katya and Stalinka pressing themselves against him, just as naked as he was.

"Show us, Frank Bishop," Katya purred.

"Show us your tesla cannon," Stalinka begged. "I must know what my love is capable of..."

"Frank!" Merlin cried out. "You're doing impossible things again! You can't lewd witches in mid-air!"

With only hundreds of feet to spare, the warmth of a maser engulfing him, Frank Bishop opened his mouth in the last few moments of his life, and screamed.

"AAAAAAAAAGHBLAKWHATTHEFFFUCK!"

Frank sat up in bed, drenched in sweat. He looked over at Merlin, who only stirred in her sleep. She shivered, caught in the grip of her own nightmare. Dragging himself over to his RIO, he gave her a gentle pat on the head, which seemed to calm her down. Sighing with relief, he decided to make his way to the shower. Big day today, had to be somewhat presentable.

Cleaned up and ready to go, he noticed finally just how early it really was. He smiled at Merlin, still asleep at 3AM. She hadn't awakened upon sensing Frank wasn't in bed close by, which made him feel more at ease. Maybe something to do with that Kenji guy? Lord knew the kid needed all the help she could get.

"See you in a few, Merlin," Frank whispered, giving her another pat on the head for good measure before wandering out into the halls of the castle. Maybe he could find something to watch on TV.
