As you head for your quarters, you hear Dadanum talking to some other guards in a hurried, nervous tone. "Did you here? There's another monster! Another monster in the streets!"

That gets your attention. You skitter toward them. "Where? What kind? I'll kill it for you."

"Out by the palace. And I don't know! Someone said that there was something huge walking the streets, some kind of giant."

> Bring that clay ball.
> Gather a bunch of allies to fight with you

let's get some gear and our clay ball.
We don't hear any screaming yet, so it's probably just the charioteer's monster, and we have the luxury of armor putting on time. If it's not, we'll be glad the armor's on anyway.

You take the time to strap yourself into your armor - with some help from the armorer. You pick up your chipped shield and your new barbed spear, and you tuck that clay ball into the back of the sash around your waist, with scraps of linen packed around it. By the time you crawl out of the pyramid into the cool evening air, you look quite commanding.

You look around for giant monsters. A few brave commoners point you in the right direction. Quite a ways from the palace, you see a dark humanoid giant, at least thirty feet high, pacing the broad streets, bent forward, sniffing the air. It looks unhappy.

You step out from behind the buildings you were tucked between. You keep your spear lowered. "Hi! My name's Hunzuu, what's yours?"

The giant turns to face you. It looks vaguely female, but it's hard to make out the features of its rough olive-green flesh in the growing twilight. It carries a chunk of masonry as an improvised weapon. Its most grotesque feature is the ordinary-looking human head looking out of its chest.

"Flesh-eater!" the giant snarls and lifts its weapon. "Are you what smells wrong?!"

"No, that's Hunzuu!" the head says. "Look, she's on our side! Damn it all. Hunzuu, this thing isn't listening to me. Can you calm it down or something?"

You make a gesture like you're smelling yourself. "Me? No more so than usual, I hope!" You try to giggle girlishly, but it falls rather flat.

The giant looks around and scowls. "Something smells very wrong. Something is sick. Stay out of my way, flesh-eater. You will find me no easy sport."

"Wait! What's going on here?" You follow what you think is a safe distance behind the giant.

Only the head answers. "The relic made this thing around me! It behaved at first, but then it broke out through a wall and started wandering around like a man possessed!"

The head yells back to you. "But your very existence proves that it is worth the risk! I volunteered for this, and I would do so again! This is just, ah, not quite what I expected..."

You see that the giant has found her way to the city gates, near the stretch of dry grass where the adventurers keep watch in shifts around the giant reclining blight demon.

You simply keep pace with the giant, your spear at the ready. "That's what you smell, isn't it? Look, I don't like it either, but that blight demon's on our side, too. Some humans have it under their control."

The giant's nostrils flare at the first sight of the mountainous thing, lit by the guards' torches and bonfires as well as by the bluish glow of the magician controlling it. "It is more than a crop-eater. It is wrong. It is sick. It smells like the world's end. It must die!" She charges it.

You've been practicing your running. You can now do a rough impression of a galloping horse by keeping your legs grouped up into pairs. You catch up to the giant and leap at her. She's more than twice your height, but you have experience and powerful claws on your side. You bring her to the ground, but you choose not to sting her. She drops the hunk of masonry and tries to wrestle you off of her. "Flesh-eater! You will not hold me back! It must die!"

At the sight of the fight breaking out, some of the Adventurers scatter and ready weapons, while others climb the blight demon and order it to arise. It looks at you with empty black eyes.

You give an ear-splitting hiss that makes the giant's extra head wish that he had something to cover his ears with. It even seems to give the blight demon pause. The giant, however, is not cowed for long, and soon she has one hand around your neck and another around your stinger. She gives your tail a hard tug. Ow! Nobody's done that before. It's not pleasant. "Hey! Come on! Just stop fighting, everyone! I know that thing is dangerous, but we have to wait until it does something!"

The giant shows her thick teeth. "Wait until it kills the earth? Wait until it kills this city like it did all the others? No! I kill it or die trying!"

The magician riding the blight demon makes the massive beast bend down so he can better call out to you. "Hunzuu! I appreciate your help! Hold this other monster still so my demon can bite it in half."

>These rolls!

You relax your claws for just long enough to make the giant let her guard down, then you clamp both claws onto the arm that's holding your neck, squeeze until it lets go, and leap into a flip so high that it twists the giant's arm and makes her fall over again. The sheer bulk of the thing probably makes it too big to carry, but your superb moves have kept it from lashing out at the demon for a while longer.

"STOP!" You command. You wish Ninlil were here. "Explain. What does that thing do to the earth?"

The giant winces. "The demon? It was made so big for a reason. It is a scab around the worst thing in the world, the thing that made me necessary. It must be destroyed. It has wiped out cities before, it will do it again!"

The head whimpers. "Hey! I can feel that, too!"

You turn to the giant, who's growling in frustration. "Look, maybe picking a scab is a bad idea? Whatever it is, can we just leave it in there?"

The giant shakes her head vehemently. "I can sense its wrongness! It mocks me! I can't stay here as long as it lives, and I must stay here. I am not like you, flesh-eater. I cannot sit idle while humans kill themselves. Humans are my heart."

"What if I got your pardons first? Then would you part with this thing?"

They look at each other, and the ones on the ground confer with each other. The one with the glowing blue eyes speaks his decision first. "A pardon AND the land under our old barracks back. And let the king decree it himself, where everyone can hear! He doesn't have to face us if he's too afraid; just his own people, plus one witness from us."

You look at the giant. "Can you wait just a little while?"

The giant looks back at you. "Why do you meddle in human business, flesh-eater? Why do you care?"

You consider your answer for a long while. Why are you doing all this, anyway? Because you're told? Because you like being called savior of the city? Just for the few people in this city you love? You give the answer that sounds the most noble to you. "As awful as humans can be sometimes, I still believe that there's good in them."

You let go, since she's playing along. "Fine. Now... can you explain yourself a little bit? Who are you? Is that guy inside you all right?"

The giant rolls her shoulders and cracks her knuckles. "I was just made, but I was made to remember a few things. I'm a heartless giant. Humans made my kind out of desperation. They were at war with all the other races, even against the gods. Their friends had abandoned them. And Pazuzu had destroyed their homes. It was their last gasp. They wanted to make a new kind of monster, not a copy of an old one. So they made us out of magic, with living humans for hearts. I'm not sure exactly why or how. Maybe that's the only thing that worked. Or maybe it was so we wouldn't abandon them like the rest. Anyway, we were made to remember a few things. What we are, how to fight for our people, and how to tell when a thing should not be."

The head looks up at her, "So will I be all right? I mean, not that I'm complaining, but that's been on my mind, too."

The giant nods. "I think so. I know I need you to live."

"Well, that's a relief, I suppose. For a moment there I thought you might lance me like a boil. My name's Appan, what's yours?"

"Appan, is that all right with you?"

Appan looks up. "I don't, er, feel like I'm in a position to be naming this one. Really, I thought I'd be turned into a monster, not a monster accessory."

That makes Patience laugh. "Hah! Well, you're not going anywhere. But I don't think I'll be doing anything you wouldn't do. I'm here to keep humans alive. No matter what."

The head Adventurer calms the black-drooling blight demon and makes it recline on the flattened grasses again. "And yes, Hunzuu, I do appreciate the irony of the fact that everyone's making monsters to protect the city but it doesn't feel any safer. And yet it works. You helped beat some sense into Ligish, I hear. You saved Shamash's sacred wedding. There's a risk to every monster, even you, but it's better than just getting rolled over. It's a time for monsters. Don't you agree?"

> "I wish it weren't so, but yeah, it takes good monsters to stop bad monsters."
> "Not all monsters are the same. That thing must die. You don't, but that thing does."
> "Tell me the truth - did you Adventurers create that giant maggot on purpose?"

They already know we have to kill the giant monster.

If it -just being around- hurts the harvest or some shit, then it's gotta go. Aint nothing messes with our harvest. That is, in the most literal sense possible, our bread and butter they're fucking with.

Your blight demon is different, it's an actual fucking blight
needs to die

"I wish it weren't so, but yeah, it takes good monsters to stop bad monsters." You sigh.

The wizard's eyes light up brighter. "So you at least admit that our gift was a good idea in theory. Good. You know, I was tempted to take that demon to some smaller town and conquer it by force, but funny as it may seem, I rather like this city. I didn't even know I had this power before. Perhaps I can put it to use again."

"Now tell me the truth," you say. "Did you adventurers make that giant maggot on purpose?"

His eyes narrow. "From what I knew of the situation? Probably not. We did intentionally violate our contract with the priests by keeping the sarcophagus to ourselves. We wanted to see what we could do with it, or at least sell it back to the priests later. But the maggot either came out on its own, or some damn fool opened it without permission."

> "That's a lot to presume. You're that damn fool, aren't you?"
> "Well, you did wrong, but that's what pardons are for. And you will get a pardon."

As long as we go face to face with him, lowering or lifting if necessary, and tell him to not pull this shit again. The adventurer's guild exploded enough times.

I sort of want to ask this on top of the other thing.
Or at least make it clear we totally know.

"Well, you did wrong, but that's what pardons are for. And you will get a pardon."

"Great! Thank you kindly, Lady Scorpion!" He starts to dismount and slide down from the shaggy neck of the blight demon.

You catch him as he reaches ground level and use your powerful claws to hols him up to your eye level. "I expect you not to do this kind of thing again."

He laughs nervously. "Heheheh... what, not at all? What if I were supervised? Wrangling this thing isn't my only trick, you know. I know some other magic. Your priest friends could use me!"

> "Thanks, but no thanks. Just behave yourself and enjoy this time of peace while it lasts."

"We could talk about that. Will you be rebuilding the school? The priests may hire you again. Just don't make any monsters in secret."

The man, who's surprisingly short when not atop his beast, ambles over to a campfire to warm himself. "Awwww, but the Charioteers get to make monsters! They made that dreadful giant. And the priests have, what, two monsters now? Three? Adventurers have typically relied on stealth and small numbers, but these days it seems you're not fully equipped without an abomination or two at your beck and call."

"That is a real problem you point out. We'll sort out the best ways to make monsters, so we're all doing it together, as a city. Or I hope we'll do that. Maybe the king will sort something out."

He snorts in derision. "The king. How has he been? As ridiculous as ever? Has he even found a wife yet? I bet he wouldn't know what to do with one if he had one."

> "The king is much better than he used to be. He led us to victory against Turtak."

"The king is much better than he used to be. He led us to victory against Turtak."

That makes him laugh and drop the wineskin he was about to drink from. "Him? I saw him give a few speeches - at festivals, that kind of thing. He could barely be bothered to remember his own speeches! Once a man had to keep whispering in his ear! If he's finally getting his nose out of those scrolls and paying attention, who knows what may come of it? His handlers may be disappointed that they can no longer use his power for him."
"They'll adjust, I'm sure." Though you're not so sure.

man, that giant thing took all day. I'd have liked to get our prisoner girl a look at the new monster before we had to get rid of it.
Also see if she can really bend bars.

In an arrangement you've made with the pyramid guards, you're scheduled to take Iltani out for another walk on the terrace tomorrow. They don't like it, but they dare not contradict you. Especially not Dadanum. You may be friends, but the power imbalance in your relationship really shows through, more so with him than with others. You decide to see how Iltani likes this giant blight demon and if she can sense whatever abominable thing is inside it. Walks are good for her, and asking her advice will be a sign of trust that might just help her endure her confinement.

> Next session will probably be Saturday. And I'll post the time on Twitter at least a day in advance next time, I promise.
