You question Niklas a bit as you move, mostly on how he came to be here and what he’s doing with Daniil’s partner, but you don’t get much out of the boy. Ah well. You have more important things to worry about.

First thing’s first: Sally and Aslan are out there fighting. You watch the cloud for a bit, and when it seems as though the bugs are keeping their distance, you call your partner up.

“Wayne?” She sounds a bit confused, and a little bit worried. “Wayne, did something happen? Do you need help?”

“No,” You chuckle, your partner’s worry touching even in the middle of a fight. “No, we’re fine, and we got those two out of the way. I’m calling about you.” You allow a bit of your own worry to creep into your words. “Are YOU alright? Are you hurt? Do you think you should start to pull back?” You hear your partner hum in thought for a bit over the line.

“I’m doing fine- none of them were strong enough to do anything other than scratch me. But I’ll leave the choice on pulling back to you.” There’s a pause, and then a roar of laughter in the background. “It’s not like our friendly lion needs my help, or anything.”

You laugh nervously at that, unsure of what to think about Aslan’s transformation.

You think about it for a bit, weighing your options.

“...I think you should make your way back here. We’ve pulled those two out, so all that’s left is to get you and Aslan and go...and Aslan isn’t going to be going anywhere for a while if what we’re seeing is any indicator.” You look at Zoe, who’s still looking out at the cloud of giant bugs, which are still dying in droves thanks to her digimon’s efforts. Those blasts of lion-shaped fire are still flying in all directions, more than a few catching a bug or two. You turn back to your digivice. “We’ll meet up with you back the way we came. In the meantime, try not to get hurt any further, alright?”

The other end is quiet for a moment, before she laughs a bit to herself. “...I’ll do my best,” She promises, her voice suddenly much more...you’re not sure. Sultry? “And I won’t let any of them get close. They won’t even touch me.” With that, she severs the connection, and in the distance, you see a massive burst of wind kick up a huge amount of dust...and dead bugs.

Well, with that taken care of (you hope), you’re left with Zoe, this Niklas kid, and Daniil’s partner Impmon, who’s sizing the two of you up warily. It seems that even after what happened at the school, the little imp’s not the most trusting of digimon. Or maybe he’s just upset your digimon are both a higher level. Oh well.

Finally, you reach the point where Aslan killed that digimon you interrogated, your packs still intact where you left them. Picking yours up, as well as Zoe’s, you have to strain a bit to fit them properly on your back. You really hope Aslan will be willing to carry some of this when he comes out of that….whatever that mood of his is.

Niklas, however, seems to be even worse in terms of endurance than Zoe is- or he might be exhausted from surviving those bugs. Either way, he collapses as soon as you reach the safety of your starting position. You’re not sure what to think of that.

“Uh, are you alright?” You ask, and he merely offers a shaky thumbs-up in reply. Well, if he says so…

Looking about, you can see that the winds Sally kicked up have died down now...with more than half the remaining horde of insects dead as a result.

There were a lot of the roaches left before you called her.

You estimate you have about five minutes, maybe more, before your partner's done out there and returns. In the meantime, you could try to talk to Niklas again, or Impmon, or talk with Zoe. There's also always the option of looking at your digivice some more...

You’re still a bit curious as to how Sally could end the conversation from her side, but put that out of your mind for now. Instead, you turn your attention to the two whom you’ve just rescued.

Impmon, Daniil’s partner, is now watching the carnage still going on in the distance as Aslan shows no signs of slowing or stopping. Niklas is sending curious glances at you and Zoe when he thinks you aren’t looking, though why you’re not sure. Well…

“So where’s Daniil?” You ask, getting both the human and the digimon’s attention. “I thought we were all supposed to meet up and go from there.” Niklas frowns, while the imp scowls.

“He and my own partner got separated from us when those digimon-”

“Roachmon,” Impmon supplies, his tone bitter.

“Yes, Roachmon, when they first found us.” He pulls out his own digivice, which is an odd green/gold. “But he’s managed to contact me once already, so I know he’s okay.”

Now THAT piques your interest.

“He knows a way to communicate between digivices?” Niklas shrinks back at your sudden question, but regains his composure quickly.

“Y-yes, but he didn’t tell me how. I was, um, under attack at the time, so I doubt I would have heard even if he did.”

That takes some of the wind out of your sails, but you’re nonetheless pleased that such a thing exists at all.

In fact, now that you think about it, you could try to find that function now…

“We heard about why they were after you,” You say, and the other boy’s face grows dark in a show of anger; a look you didn’t expect from someone so harmless-looking.

“So did we,” he mutters, and he looks out at the rocks where he and Impmon had been hiding. “And the one we heard it from wasn’t the only one out there, it looks like.” He looks a bit upset by this, so you resolve to ask about it at a later time.

“Well, once Sally and Aslan get back,” You notice the look he’s giving you, “Our partners.” He nods, and looks back to the destruction that’s still going on now. “Once they get back, we can go and look for Daniil and...your partner?” You guess, and he nods again, not as upset by that as you’d have thought. He must have a lot of faith in Daniil, then.

For a minute, everything is quiet, but then, over the din rising up from the distance, you hear a whooshing sound, building in volume until-

“I’m back~” Your partner singsongs, coming to a stop behind you, strapped to her broom as usual for when she’s flying. You turn to look at her, and blanch at the sight.

Yes, she’s a bit scuffed up here and there, and you can see a couple spots of red blood where her wounds were enough to bleed, but it’s not that that worries you.

It’s the very large amount of green-ish insect blood she’s absolutely splattered with, mingled with the dust and dirt kicked up from her wind attacks. Looking down at herself, your witch laughs sheepishly. “Um, you’re going to have to forgive me if I don’t give you a hug, Wayne. I’m feeling pretty dirty.” She says this without any of the usual flirtatiousness, something you’re grateful for.

It’s Niklas that speaks up first, surprisingly enough.

“Um, there IS a river nearby, you know.” All of you turn to him, and he seems to duck into himself, as if trying to avoid your attention. “Or not. Forget I said anything.”

Sally, however, looks rather pleased at the suggestion.

“That should make it much easier to control my Aquary, actually,” she muses. “The more water I have on hand, the greater the degree of control and precision I have.” She looks in your direction, as if trying to gauge your reaction. Zoe seems very interested in the idea, as well.
