You are Flying officer Julian Reber of the Royal Air Force. You joined the RAF to reclaim your homeland from the BETA, an alien race that threatens to extinguish humanity, and to be a badass mercenary fighting other nations' wars just like your ancestors.

A few months ago, you were part of a strike team that eliminated an enemy Hive, scoring the first major victory for humanity. However, for reasons unknown, the government decided to suppress all knowledge of your achievement and instead framed your group for gross incompetence. The good news is, everyone has more or less realized that the frame-up job is just the RAF saving face and nothing will come of it; memos announcing the arrival of VIPs were sent out and rescinded before anyone wasted any time on preparations, preliminary hearings were rescheduled and then postponed indefinitely, Group captain Hall, your base's commanding officer, was summoned back to London, but had to refuse the order because there was no other officer on base qualified to perform his duties and your command post operator, Vivian Knight, received her promotion to Flying officer on schedule.

All things considered, the cover-up is going too well. The Hive infiltration is being covered up effectively and while some people might suspect what happened, they'll never be able to find the evidence to prove it. Even the collateral damage, which could have ended the careers of several dozen officers at best, and severely compromised the Dover defense line at worst, is being minimized as much as possible. Project Round Table might very well escape from this unscathed.

That, however, isn't your concern. You haven't seen active combat since the Hive infiltration despite your daily rounds on watch duty, and that makes you anxious. It's true that the BETA suffered massive losses during the Hive infiltration and the operations leading up to it, but it's just a matter of time before they come at you again.

The remainders of Camelot group have been standing watch over Calais since the Hive infiltration and right now, Arthur squadron is on the midnight watch. The A-10Cs were supposed to do that job, but there's still only two half-squadrons of them and from what you've heard, Camelot is at the bottom of the list when it comes to recruitment. Everyone needs to pitch in until you can get your hands on new recruits.

Which means you're now having some combination of breakfast, lunch and dinner with Elaine and Knight, who are both on your schedule, and Wright, who always seems to be on shift. You're not quite sure what the synthetic food you're eating is a supposed to be a synthetic version of, but at least it's bland rather than terrible.

Elaine is entertaining you all with tales of her training exploits.

"So here we are, just walking along the obstacle course, when this idiot gets spooked by a panel with a grappler drawn on it that pops up right in front of him. He decides he hasn't been stupid enough yet, so he backs into me and throws me off-balance. I can't stabilize with the legs, so I punch the engines, knock him forward, fly *over* him, and spray the panel with my cannons."

"How is that even possible," Knight asks. "I mean, I'd understand if someone backed off reflexively if you were on foot, but would you really do that with a TSF's controls?"

"Maybe," you say. "Although by the time you start reacting with that kind of reflex, you're more likely to open fire. That isn't the stupidest thing I've ever seen though."

"Oh really?" Elaine raises an eyebrow at you. "So what have you got, Cranwell boy?"

You scratch your head, thinking through all the stupid things you did at Cranwell. Losing to a pair of WW2-era prop planes is pretty high on the list, but those guys were pretty damn good aces, so there's not much shame there. The Saint Patrick Paintjob is second on your list, but lathering your Phantom in mud let you salvage some dignity before you returned to base. That leaves...

"One day," you say, "the lads and I were scheduled to run a training match against these fucking frogs. Being dishonourable fucking frogs, they broke into our lockers and replaced our fortified suits with women's suits. Now, suits are pretty much all the same, but women have more space for their chest, so if we put them on, we would look like we had a sagging pair of tits. The other guys decided to just kind of roll them up a in a bundle and tape them in place. It looked stupid, but at least it wasn't a sagging pair of tits. I, however, wanted to make a point."

None of the ladies seem to know where this is going, but they're all ignoring their meals and paying attention to your story. Not that the meal is much of a competition.

"We were only piloting Phantoms and I can take up to 6 gs if I really have to, so..."

Knight looks at you, apparently confused, but Wright and Elaine both start cracking up.

"You didn't," Wright says.

"I did," you say. "I just melted the midsection membrane, used duct tape to keep the important bits on and got into my TSF."

Elaine and Wright both start laughing even harder and Knight turns bright read. She fidgets a bit and then looks at you furtively.

"Did it stay on," she asks.

"Not really," you say. "The headset was fine, but the, ah, other parts kept moving around and I ended up deciding to just toss them. Then I remembered TSF seats don't have padding, and TSFs in general don't have very good heating. It was the worst fight of my life, but at least we won."

"What did they do with the seat," Elaine asks.

>(cont.)
>>
>>30132011
"Oh, they burned it," you say. "The mechanics were wearing hazmat suits when they unbolted it."

The four of you have a pleasant time with the rest of your meal. Wright shares some stories of pyrotechnics and electrocution that, she assures you, she was never personally involved with. Knight doesn't have any war stories of her own, but she seems to be having fun.

Once you finish your meal, you still have some time left before your shift.

You decide you might as well check up on Hall. Arthur squadron has fully absorbed the two survivors from Bedivere squadron and Lancelot and Gawain squadrons have managed to get enough new recruits to pull themselves back to full strength, but Bedivere squadron itself is still a total loss and it doesn't look like you'll be able to resurrect it any time soon. The group's personnel problems aren't something you need to worry about, but Wright has effectively drafted you into the BETA reactor research project and you can't very well take care of that if you're needed on the battlefield.

The door to Hall's office is wide open and despite his grim look he casually waves you in when he sees you arrive.

"Reber," he says, "come and have a seat. I was just thinking about you."

"Anything I can help you with sir," you ask.

"Maybe," Hall says. When he speaks, he doesn't look at you, but at the folders and papers scattered all over his desk. "I was just thinking about our personnel. I think I should be able to get enough good recruits to put a new squadron together, but we just don't have enough experienced officers. Most of them have been pulled back as instructors, or assigned to other posts. It seems Project Round Table has succeeded too well."

Ah, that does make sense. You initially suspected the Round Table was getting blacklisted because of the cover-up, but its original mission was to assault the Lyon Hive. Now that it has successfully infiltrated, destroyed and partially salvaged a Hive, it's no longer the highest priority, at least not until the BETA tech you recovered is properly studied and analyzed.

"So we're on standby until we receive a new mission, or until we can promote someone from our ranks," you say.

"That's right," Hall says. It's only then that he really looks at you. "Reber, I know you turned Knight down when she offered to fly with you. I don't want to put you on the spot, but I need to know why."

"I'd taken a bad hit from that Fort," you say. "I didn't know if I could be responsible for someone else."

Hall nods in understanding. You don't like admitting your weakness, but he doesn't seem to hold it against you.

"And what would you do if I asked - asked, not ordered - you to let her fly with you now," he asks.

Though with that said, it's probably a good idea for her to have at least SOME field experience even before we get an Excalibur up and running so she's not completely green when our equipment situation is in place.

Leaning toward letting her fly with us on a few lower-priority missions, at the very least.

Because frankly, taking her in on a hive infiltration as her first mission would've been kind of insane.

"It would probably do her confidence some good, but with the equipment we currently have..." You shake your head. "I could take her out for a practice flight, and it might be fine if we had an F-18F, but there's no point in putting her in a Tornado."

Hall sighs and takes a flask out from his desk drawers.

"Damn it," he says, "I can't put Bedivere back together unless I can find a new CO for Arthur and she's the only candidate I've got."

"What about taking someone from Lancelot or Gawain," you ask.

Hall takes a very long sip from his flask and looks at you flatly.

"I need them in Lancelot and Gawain," he says. "Do you think there's anything you can do with a Tornado?"

"Maybe," you say. "I can probably come up with a new HUD that focuses on the tacnet for the passenger, but it would take time."

"All right, just keep it mind," Hall says. "Get ready for the watch shift, I'll be along shortly."

"Yes, sir."

You salute and leave Hall's office to get changed into your fortified suit. You're the last one to arrive in the locker room and most of your squadron has already left, but Elaine was waiting for you.

"Come to peep again," you ask.

"These days, it's more fun when you're in the shower," she says. "I just wanted to know if you were going to try and handle the Tornado's gs naked, too."

"Not until I build a custom heating unit and buy a nice pillow."

You both get changed into your fortified suits and head to your TSFs. The hangars aren't as busy as they usually are, but they're definitely sloppier. The tools aren't perfectly sorted out on their racks, the work queues are a confusing mess and there doesn't seem to be anyone on standby. The BETA reactor must be keeping Wright very busy if she's willing to let her hangar fall into this sorry state. You'll need to see if you can help her out later.

For now, however, your focus is on the watch shift. The squadron usually splits in half, with one half staying behind and the other conducting mid-range patrol. Tonight, you get first pick on which assignment you want.

You open a channel to Arthur squadron's vanguard, Elaine and the Kerbal brother.

"Anyone else feel like flying tonight," you say.

"It sure as hell beats sitting still for eight hours," Elaine says.

The Kerbal brothers likewise agree.

"I'll let the Group captain know," Elaine says as she switches the flight channel off.

Meanwhile, you get in touch with Knight back at CIC. It sounds like a slow night on her end and you see her nursing a cup of coffee.

"Arthur Crown, this is Arthur 3," you say. "We're proceeding with mid-range patrols around the Calais forward operating base. Can you give us a situation report."

"Arthur 3, this is Arthur Crown," Knight says. "Satellite images of the mid-range and long-range zone surrounding Calais are clear. We are detecting multiple contacts beyond long-range, but we are monitoring the situation. We will advise as needed."

"Arthur Crown, this is Arthur 3," you say. "Report receive. Proceeding with the patrol."

Elaine quickly relays confirmation that your flight will be proceeding with the mid-range patrol and transmits the standard flight path to your TSFs. You disembark at Calais to relieve the previous watch from their shift and fly off to your patrol paths. The watch shift officially takes eight hours, but the mid-range patrol can be done in 6 hours at normal speed, 4 hours if you rush it or 8 hours if you take it slow. Taking your time means you're more likely to spot anomalies, but it also means you're more likely to get caught alone.

You decide to take the patrol casually. Taking it slow might end up delaying the next shift and rushing through would just burn extra fuel. Plus, the Group captain will probably be pissed if he thinks you botched it.

The patrol takes you a long a semi-circle roughly 200 miles away from Calais, the boundary of the mid-range line. The long-range line extends for another 200 miles and beyond that is the no man's land of the BETA. You reach the relay points as scheduled every 30 minutes, survey the area and move on to the next point on your map. Nothing unusual happens and Knight confirms that there are no anomalies. Within six hours, you're back at Calais, waiting out the rest of your shift.

Your time is almost up when you receive an update from Knight.

"Arthur squadron, this is Arthur Crown," she says. "Several groups of BETAs have breached the long-range boundary and appear to be heading towards Calais. We are not Code 991 yet, but be on guard. All personnel have been ordered to prepare for duty in case of emergency."

All around the Calais base, you see personnel move equipment around in an orderly fashion. At the back of the base, the A-10Cs are being prepared for deployment. This isn't the first time they've done this and they clearly aren't worried about it too much. It's possible the BETA will just turn aside before they get anywhere near the base.

The next shift will be here any minute. You could let them relieve you and head back to base to refuel, or you can suggest that Arthur squadron stay behind to see what happens. It'll take somewhere between 3 and 6 hours for the BETA to arrive anyway.

Hall immediately contacts you through the squadron's channel.

"Arthur squadron, this Arthur 1," he says. "We may have incoming. What's your combat readiness."

"Ammunitions are full and fuel is within acceptable parameters, sir," you say. "We might as well stay here and wait."

The rest of the squadron likewise reports acceptable combat readiness and Hall orders you to standby somewhere out of the way so you don't obstruct the new watch or any of the base's personnel. You switch your TSF to minimal power to conserve fuel and batteries and wait for whatever is coming. You hope that a miracle will happen and that the BETA will turn away from you.

Your hopes are predictably dashed. Within two hours, you receive a report that more and more BETA are within long range of the base and open a channel to Knight to see what's happening.

"Knight," you say, "what does it look like out there."

"It looks bad, Reber," she says. "It looks like 100,000 BETAs might be heading towards you in total. Only a small fraction of that have crossed the long-range boundary, but they're heading towards you and more are following."

"I don't suppose it'd be possible to intercept them?"

"No," Knight says. "They're coming from all directions, so you'd just end up getting flanked. We're preparing Gawain squadron for launch and we're also coordinating with Cerberus."

Off in the distance, you see the A-10Cs move into defensive positions. Soldiers are loading up the turrets and stationary defenses and the tanks are rolling out. You even see some infantry move into their fortifications in case the smaller BETA strains show up. That's when you truly realize that this battle will not end quickly. At 100,000 BETAs, the incoming swarm will be the largest you've ever seen in person.

We were literally just told that intercepting them would be mildly suicidal.

Getting into a defensive position and just waiting lets the BETA get too close to the base before trying to thin the herd, but riding out to meet them gets us flanked by their full numbers.

Clearing out some as they approach but not overextending while leaving room to retreat to pre-established defensive perimeters seems like a pretty reasonable compromise.

You don't feel like committing suicide today, but there aren't many defensive positions to go around and the A-10Cs and tanks need them a hell of a lot more than you do. That leaves you with the option of going into the fray as the BETA get in close to Calais. After all, that's why you were assigned to Storm Vanguard, right?

"Elaine, looks like we're going to have to go at them the minute they get close," you tell your element lead through the comm channel. "Any ideas."

"Not a single one," she says. "Knight, do you have any suggestions?"

"Not yet," Knight says. "We're assuming a standard enemy composition, so 45% Tanks, 7% Destroyers, 15% Grapplers, and 1% each for the Forts, Lasers and Heavy Lasers, plus the infantry strains. Your first contacts will most likely be Destroyers, followed by Tanks. Due to the size of the enemy formation and the distance it has to cross, they will most likely end up stretched over a very large distance. That might give you some opening to take breaks in the battle of the battle, but it's also making it difficult for us to estimate the initial contact. The good news is, we'll have more than enough time to deploy Gawain and Cerberus to provide assistance. We've also requested assistance from the Royal Navy, but it'll take some time for them to get into position. They probably won't make it for the first wave."

"Right, thanks," you say. "Keep us updated."

"Of course."

"Arthur squadron, this is Arthur 1," Hall says. "We'll be meeting the enemy as soon as they get close to the base. Formation is Arrowhead 3. Arthur 2, you're front and centre. Arthur 3, you're right behind her. Get to it."

You quickly run the math in your head. The arc of Destroyers in front of you is about 100 miles long. If you split the squadron, that's about 50 miles. You can fly that in something between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on combat. And you can kill a lot of Destroyers while you're at it.

"Hey, Elaine," you say. "Want to split the squadron and eat this thing from the inside out?"

"Arrowhead 3 is a nice, compact formation," she says. "Arthur 1, this is Arthur 3. Requesting permission to split the squadron along the vanguard."

"Arthur squadron, this is Arthur 1," Hall says. "All even designations, follow Arthur 2. All odd designations, follow Arthur 3."

The order is met with a series of acknowledgements.

"Knight, what does our contact look like," you ask.

"Destroyers only," she says. "The Tanks are too far behind to threaten you at the moment. According to our estimates, you should be clear to engage the Destroyers all the way through."

"Okay, let's do this."

Elaine moves slightly to the right and you move slightly left to keep each other clear of your firing lines. With careful shots, you knock the legs out from under the lead destroyers and create an opening in their charge. That opening is all you need.

Elaine veers further to the right, taking off with half the squadron, while the other half follows you to the left. There are thousands of Destroyers in front of you, and their exposed backs are insignificant before the onslaught of your assault cannons. With every kill you score, their formation becomes further eroded, which gives you even more targets to choose from.

"Knight, what's our status?"

"The Destroyer line is falling apart on both sides," she says. "You're almost through. No casualties."

By the time you're almost through the line, the Destroyers have finally begun to turn and head towards you, but that exposes them to the Calais base's artillery and two the A-10Cs. Not that it matters; their formation is so broken that you slip through and finish it off with no trouble. The base's defenders only score a few kills before the possibility of friendly fire forces them to stop.

You meet back with the rest of Arthur squadron at the base. Just as Knight said, there are no casualties on either side, although your fuel and ammo reserves are lower than they should be, considering what you have left to face. Fortunately, the base is more than capable of refuelling your TSFs and you have more than enough time to get back to par before the rest of the BETA arrive.

This battle will not end soon.

Woohoo, close to another level up! And not a bad job butchering those BETA!
>>
>>30136953
Sweet.

What we get for leveling up to level 4?
>>
>>30136953
I don't have much time left, so this seems like a sufficiently climactic place to stop for the night.

Next thread will be Wednesday at 7PM EST. We will be continuing the defense of Calais base.

'Night folks.

>More self worth

Yeah. Levels that mean nothing are bad.

Only second to levels where if you are level 5, all your foes become level 5.

>>30137000
Our skills give a +4 instead of a +3, iirc.
