You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

Well, you got Celestino's blessing. Or the closest thing to it, anyways.

And now you're heading back to your seat... it won't be long before Celestino makes his big announcement.

Not that you're looking forward to it.

>Congratulations, you are once again an unruly WOLF!
>Wolves are cool and powerful... and also rather dangerous.
>The Princess considers you to be her friend!
>But while wolves are really cool, they still don't count as people.

Giancarlo... he's definitely something. And now you understand why the girls can't stand him, though he's not a -horrible- person or anything.

Still a lot to deal with, though. And you're quite happy to get away from him.

"Here he is, and in one piece too!" Giancarlo says to Sir Gregory.
"So I see," Sir Gregory replies.
"I gotta say, not everyone has the guts to talk to the old man like that... he must've gotten that from his grandma."
"Adoption doesn't work like that," Marianne mumbles, shaking her head. "Anyways, I suppose I should thank you for bringing him back."
"Anything to spend more time with you, Marianne!" Giancarlo says, winking. "But now I gotta go tease the hell out of my little sister, so buh-bye!"

With an exaggerated wave, Giancarlo skips over to where Luciana, Karel, Alberto and Lisette are sitting.

"You seem to be in a good mood," Marianne says to you as you sit back down next to her. "Made friends with a kindred spirit, I take it?"

"That's not it," you reply, sighing. "If I seem to be in a good mod, it's because I was able to manage to get King Celestino to accept me and Luciana's relationship."
"...you did?" Marianne replies, her eyes growing wide with surprise.
"So you won over the old man?" Thierri chimes in. "Nice going, I knew you could do it!" he laughs, rustling your hair like one would do to a little kid. It's honestly kind of embarrassing, but you can't exactly do anything about it since he's the king and all.
"Thanks, Your Majesty," you say.

"I bet you're regretting your choice in seating now," Marianne says with a smirk. "Though I do admit that it's amusing to see someone else be the target of Father's embarrassing tendencies for a change."
"Don't be like that, Marianne..." Thierri pouts.
"Anyways," she says, ignoring her father, "good job with winning King Celestino over. I understand that most people find him rather intimidating, so it's a pleasant surprise to see that things went smoothly for you."
"It was a surprise to me too," you reply. "Not that I'm complaining or anything."
"Of course not."

Looking at the front of the room, you see that the staff's starting to move things around in preparation for Celestino. There are a couple of guards helping to lift something heavy onto the stage... they look like the same guys you saw sweeping up earlier, come to think about it.

With nothing better to do, you look around the room as you wait for things to begin. Over where the royal family's sitting, you notice that the only ones present are the ones who you met yesterday... minus Elena and Andreas. And judging from Lisette's annoyed expression, you figure that she's not very happy about that fact.

You see that Karel and Emilio are chatting happily... it's kind of odd to see the Prince so relaxed. And Luciana's being teased by Giancar- damn it, he's pointing at you now. After nervously waving back at them, you decide to focus your attention elsewhere for fear of Giancarlo involving you in more of his antics.

Marianne and Thierri are talking about pastries, Rana's trying to cheer Sylvie up by telling back jokes, and Sir Gregory just seems incredibly pissed about everything right now.

And just as you doublecheck to make sure that Milien's staying way the hell away from Marianne, the sound of trumpeting draws your attention to the front of the room.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the King of Marconetti, Celestino Saella Di Marconetti," the trumpeter says before moving out of the way so that Celestino can take the podium.
"To all my honored guests," Celestino says, "I thank you for attending another of my impromptu events. And I promise you that this one won't be so long..."

After some more opening remarks, Celestino gets to the main point of this thing.

"And now I would like to ask the victor of yesterday's duel, Monique Gilbeault, to come up to the podium."

Amidst a great deal of murmuring, you see Monique get up from his seat near the back of the room and make his way to the front... taking special care to avoid the section of the room where you're sitting.

Though you're not sure what he might be afraid of.

"Er... it's nice to see you again, Your Majesty," Monique says as he steps up on the platform where Celestino is.
"Likewise," Celestino replies. "And I'm sure that you're wondering why exactly I called you up here, yes?"
"I am indeed," Monique replies nervously.

"Well don't worry, it's nothing bad," Celestino says, laughing as he pats Monique on the shoulder. "I was actually quite impressed with your performance in the arena yesterday, and then a certain idea came to mind..."
"Your Majesty?"
"Ah- but don't worry about King Thierri or my brother-in-law Gregory, I've already cleared things with them so you don't have to let your duty to your home country influence your decision."
"Er, my decision as to what?" Monique asks, clearly having no idea why he was even called up in the first place.

Yeah, here we go...

"Monique Gilbeault," Celestino calls out in a booming voice, "I would like to offer you knighthood and a place here in the nobility of the Kingdom of Marconetti."
"Wh- what!?" Monique gasps.

And then the room goes wild. Or rather, everywhere aside from the section that you and your friends are sitting goes wild. And looking over at the Queen, her expression is a near-exact copy of her elder brother's.

"Marconetti needs more men of skill and potential such as yourself," Celestino replies. "And the duel yesterday was proof that you possess both of those attributes."
"Thank you, Your Majesty," he replies, bowing deeply.
"So do you accept?"

"O... of course I accept!" Monique says, completely excited. "Knighthood's been my dream since I was a little boy, I can't believe that it's actually happening..."
"I'm glad to hear that, son!" Celestino replies.

The room then erupts in applause. And just as you're starting to get a queasy feeling at the pit of your stomach, Celestino raises a hand for them to be silent. A guard then approaches the King, holding a fancy ornamental pillow upon which an even fancier ornamental sword is resting.

"And now if you would kneel..." Celestino says as he takes the sword in his hand and dismisses the guard.
"Yes, Your Highness," Monique replies, taking a knee and solemnly bowing his head.
"I hereby dub thee..." he says, tapping the sword on either of Monique's shoulders, "...Sir Monique Gilbeault, the Kingdom of Marconetti's Knight of the Frozen Rose!"

As the room erupts into applause once again, all you can think about is how incredibly lame that title is..

>[4/?]
>>
>>30161540
How is it not true?
>>
>>30161540
What idea? It's not even really a criticism at this point. Monique really is a better character than Reinhold, he's consistent, doesn't flip-flop on his established characterization, and even though he is heavily flawed and has his cuntish moments, you can't really say that he's a cunt for no reason - his attitude towards Reinhold is a combination of feeling hounded by everyone around him and trying to live up the expectations his father, and Monique himself, places on his shoulders. He thought that Reinhold was trying to screw him over, just like everyone else had tried to screw him over in his life up until that point, and so he reacted (or overreacted I suppose) based on those impressions. Just because he was wrong doesn't mean his actions didn't come from a place that at least made SOME kind of sense.

I'd rather be a consistent asshole than a guy who acts like a nice guy, and then flips around and acts like a complete, lying prick. People can forgive people like Monique because they can't help it, it's just part of who they are, whether or not they are trying to be assholes to people.

People like Reinhold are fucktards because they give people a false impression, and constantly act like what they did was okay because they had the best of intentions.

This time though, Celestino allows the audience to quiet down on its own... but not before you hear Sir Gregory muttering something about cheapening the title for everyone.

You can't say that you disagree with him.

"And with that, I hereby end this assembly," Celestino says. "Feel free to congratulate Marconetti's newest knight or simply go about the rest of your day... and once again, thank you all for attending."
"Yes, thank you," Monique says, bowing before the crowd.

And with that, the audience immediately starts to disperse.

"Finally, it's over," Marianne says, standing up to stretch her legs. "I'd like to get out of here s soon as possible."
"For once, we agree on something," Sir Gregory says, scowling.
"C'mon, there's no need to be so gloomy," Thierri shrugs. "If nothing else, he'll be out of your hair now."
"I suppose you have a point there," Marianne replies.

To be fair Reinhold only acts that way because he has several divergent forces struggling over him. Reinhold written by one person or with consensus without waifu wars would be much better.

Plus, consistency is overrated. People are rarely consistent in real life, and it's seldom a good thing even if they are.

I seriously doubt that. Monique is a high-society noble born and raised, and fully embraces that role. Unless he's got some kind of comical mental block on dancing there is no way a guy with just a few months of practice would be better.

As was mentioned in the prior thread, our time with Nico and Sylvie is gonna get sorely diminished too - breakfasts won't be attainable since Sylvie will likely leave whenever we sit at the table, and Nico will go after her to support her half of the time. Then Nico will spend time with Meido.

Then we need to read letters from Luci every morning, and write her them back in the evening, so any personal time probably gets reduced there too.

>>
>>30161957
>See this type of game isn't like a VN in that we have no control once we have a waifu

Honestly this is my biggest gripe with how this is treated. Yeah, we had a vote and all that but the way it's handled with routes and route locks is still bullshit. Especially for reactions.

Reinhold is taking shit for making an arbitrary and arguably slightly out of character decision, which is justified. However, the system in place and the slow as shit timeline mean that it'd have been arbitrary and slightly out of character no matter WHAT happened. No matter what route happened, Reinhold was suddenly going to have a switch turn on his brain where he goes from thinking about everyone as a friend and nothing else to suddenly being absolutely in love with one girl with no buildup.

I mean yeah, that kinda makes sense as a mechanic for a VN, since Visual Novels are built on other mechanics and it's a convenient way to do things. But for a quest thread it leaves a bad taste in everyone's mouth and it's been the source of half the waifu arguments even weeks and months before the route lock.
>>
>>30162032

to bad swording is almost completely useless in this universe because of magic, apparently even in duels its useless because people can just show up with sealed kings and start throwing around magic all Willy nilly and get famous and Knighted for it.
>>
>>30162061
No, you don't understand. His only goal in this game was to prevent Reinhold x Lucianna. There's no other interest or commitment to the quest. So now he plans to fight a futile battle to undermine that relationship while he still can, because that's still his only focus here. Everything else is irrelevant to him.
>>
>>30162129

>>
So far it seems that the most vocal bitchers are the Moniquefags, powergaming faggots, and the general waaaaaaahhhhh fags about magic being too strong. Is this correct?
>>
>>30162129
Thierri, and a good number of other characters, could beat Monique into the pavement without any magic. Reinhold vs a Mage is more a question of distance and environment than anything else.

Yes, Sealed Kings are strong, but they aren't omnipotent, and Marconetti is one of the few places you could get away with that bullshit in a duel. If he pulled that a lot of other places he would get his shit slapped.

Sealed Kings are also rare as hell, it's annoying that our rival has one, but it doesn't undermine fighting.

Reinhold would've done better in the fight but he got 2 shit rolls right off the bat when it came to Sealed King time, which did not do us any favors. You're conflating poor rolls with the enemy being absurdly amazing.
>>
>>30162129
>to bad swording is almost completely useless in this universe because of magic

No matter what anyone says, this is obviously true.

I mean Takamaru spent his life being a good swordsman, but with magic he tore a dude literally to pieces from several feet away with one hit. With magic Monique managed to arrive ahead of us when our party had spent months planning travel itinerary, and monster attack aside managed to make decent time. Our regular nonenchanted sword was taken apart instantly despite being a top quality blade equal or better to the best in the royal arsenal, but a much lighter and thinner sword with a flame enchantment apparently stands a chance. Heck, just learning that shit makes you live longer and look hotter for more of your life.
>>
>>30162153

Arnaud has dare-devil senses x10 apparently, and he is also very proficient at magic, try again.
>>
"Might as well give Luciana the good news, I guess," you say.
"I figured that you'd want to do that as soon as possible," Marianne replies. "Very well, let's go."

With that, you and Marianne make you way towards the part of the hall where Luciana and her family were sitting. Fortunately, the place has mostly cleared of people you don't know, so the crowd that was just here is no longer a concern.

Monique's taking the long way around the hall to where his brother is, Thierri and Sir Gregory are walking with Celestino, the Queen and Giancarlo out a nearby doorway... and Luciana and Takamaru appear to be heading towards you, along with Emilio and Karel. Great.

But before you even get halfway across the hall, a terrible sense of dread hits you like a punch to the face.

>Some folks on IRC were talking about dice mechanics, and it got me thinking...

The way I do it currently is taking the best of three rolls against a set DC, with critical successes and failures taking precedence over all other rolls.
But that does kind of skew things, so someone else mentioned doing it so that said 1 and/or 20 rolls would only result in a critical if the other dice in a roll supported it.

Basically, as an example:

roll 1, 14, 19 with a DC of 14: success
roll 5, 4, 20 with a DC of 14: success
roll 3, 17, 20 with a DC of 14: critical success
roll 2, 5, 6 with a DC of 14: failure
roll 1, 3, 5 with a DC of 14: critical failure

I'm perfectly willing to change it to this, but I'll leave it up to you guys. Voting to run until the next story post.

Seems like as long as we beat the DC with anyone roll it is a success

From the ceiling, you can see it- but just barely. The shadow of a man as he seemingly flies through the air, and right towards Luciana... and he's wearing the same getup as those bastards from the other night.

Shit, they're too far away for you to get at without leaving Marianne defenseless... and you're NOT going to do that.

"Luciana! Above you!" you shout as you pull out a dagger and throw it right at the man's face.

THUNK

Thankfully, your aim was good enough to hit him... though not where you were hoping. Your dagger embeds itself into the lower part of the attacker's ribcage, the shock from which throwing him off long enough for both Takamaru and Karel to react.

"Reinhold!" Marianne shouts. "What's going on!?"
"Stay close to me!" you shout back as you ready your sword.

The instant the attacker hits the ground, Takamaru runs him through with his sword...

Mentally cursing his own ineptitude at getting caught, a certain man races across the rooftops of the buildings in Marconetti's capital city in hopes of safely making it to the castle. Behind him, he can see the silhouettes of those men who the Princess had told him to locate...

...while he was indeed successful in his mission, that doesn't exactly mean much if he isn't able to report back to the Princess with his findings. Damn it all, he should have been more careful upon leaving that building!

But now isn't the time for regrets, he has a mission to complete. Get to the Princess, or Sir Gregory, or Prince Alberto, or the King... while he had initially intended to only inform the Princess of his findings, he doesn't exactly have much leeway in this area anymore.

With the castle in sight, the man ducks down into an alley and continues his mad dash for his final destination...

...and then he finds himself crashing into the ground face-first as a piercing pain shoots through his thigh.

"God damn it..." he mumbles, ripping out the knife that had so nicely embedded itself into his leg and throwing it back as hard as he can in the general direction that it came from.

Shortly after letting the knife fly, he hears a gurgling scream... great, that's at least one of them down. JUST a little bit relieved now, he pulls out a Healing Grace scroll and uses it to stop his bleeding before getting back up to run.

He can almost FEEL them behind him, but no matter- he is a servant of the Kingdom of Marconetti, and the Princess herself entrusted him with a secret mission... and god damn it, he's not going to let her down!

Blindly throwing a few more knives behind him (that seem to hit nothing), he finally makes it to the castle's front gate, where he sees a couple of guards cleaning up. Finally, some friendly faces!

"Hey!" the man shouts, waving to the guards as he approaches them. "I have urgent information, and I'm being pursued... do you know where Princess Luciana or Sir Gregory... where -any- of the royals are!? I need to see someone as soon as possible!"
"Huh? What's going on, did you piss someone off?" a broom-holding guard asks.
"N- never mind that, I have important information for Princess Luciana!" he shouts. "If not her, then Prince Alberto or the King... Sir Gregory, it doesn't matter who, just point me in their direction so I can get from out of the open like this!"

Quit screwing around, this is why you're on cleanup duty in the first place!

"So you're what, a spy for the Princess?" the guard asks. "Whatever, come on inside and I'll take you to where she is..."

With a sigh of relief, the man follows the two guards as they lead him through the side entrance to the castle... but then he stops dead in his tracks.

Or rather, he -is- stopped dead in his tracks by a dagger to the side, courtesy of one of the guards.

"The fuck-" he gasps, staggering backwards in shock. "You're goddamned traitors..."

Fortunately, the knife didn't hit any major organs... but it -is- bleeding really badly and his combat effectiveness is now shot to hell...

"Stick close to me, Marianne!" you shout, extending your hand to the Princess as you cautiously scan your surroundings. You still don't know what's going on, and it's probably safer for you the two of you to head over to where there are two other bodyguards around. Then you can double back to your others after you've regrouped...
"O... okay," Marianne replies as she timidly takes your hand.

Constantly checking for another assassin attack, the two of you safely make your way to Luciana and the others.

"L- Luciana?" Marianne calls out, her voice trembling with fear as she tries her best not to look at the corpse that's lying at Takamaru's feet. "Is this man the same-"

Sylvie is the most innocent person of the girls as far as we know. You can bet your ass off that she's standing in fear and not doing anything unless someone tells her so.

>>
>>30163264
She also punches bears.

Not to mention she's with Rana, Reya, and Nico. They aren't the primary targets, and Rana can turn into a motherfucking full sized dragon.

It'll be alright.
>>
>>30163264

Nah. She's nice and innocent, but not really timid. Definitely not in combat circumstances.
>>
>>30163264
She's fairly combat-capable thanks to being raised by Vincent not to suck. Remember during the Lindwurm attack she didn't freeze up at all. In fact she punched a crystal bear to death.

She's no trained soldier but I doubt she's going to completely lock up over this, unless she gets caught in some kind of mental guilt spiral because she realizes she wouldn't mind if the assassins succeeded or something like that.

"They must've gotten really desperate attacking like this while your father and Sir Gregory are so close-by," you say, glancing at the doorway that they disappeared through.
"Yes," Luciana nods. "I'd hoped not to involve you any further in my problems, but I suppose that our hands have been forced."
"Luciana?" Emilio gulps. "You know what's going on with this... dead guy?"

"Yes, men such as this one have been aiming for my life for nearly a month now," Luciana replies. "Be it simply because I'm Father's oldest unmarried child or for a more personal grudge, I have no idea."
"Don't worry, I'll keep you safe," Karel says, nodding to Emilio.
"Th- thanks, Karel."

Still, though... it doesn't make sense that there would only be this single assassin.

"There's probably more on the way... or just lurking," you say as you dart your eyes around the room. Nicolette and the others are standing back where you'd left them, clearly on high guard... Monique's brother and the people he's with are doing the same, and Monique is running around the back of the room towards his brother.

"Should we head back to the others, or should we get Father and Sir Gregory?" Marianne asks.

We have no indication that anyone in the other group is a target (so we don't need to go out of our way protect them), and once we link up with the Kings and Greg we should be basically impervious to attack since they're so damn strong.

"Let's head back to the others," you say. "We can go and find Sir Gregory and the others after that, it's too dangerous to leave them here by themselves."
"Okay... that sounds like a good idea," Marianne replies.
"Don't freak out, okay?" Luciana says, placing a hand on her frind's shoulder. "Times like this are the entire reason why your father hired Reinhold, you know?"
"Yes, but even so..." Marianne says, trembling.
"Just stick close to me, I won't let anything happen to you," you say. "I won't let anything happen to -any- of you."

The six of you then start back towards your other friends, with the royals bunched together in as you and the other bodyguards take an outer defensive position. While this isn't in any way ideal, it's the best you can think of given the situation.

Slowly and carefully, you make you way towards where your other friends are... but then you hear footsteps coming from behind the podium.

"Who's there!?" you shout, your sword at the ready... but then you see that it's the same three guards who had been helping to set things up.
"I heard screams, is there something going on!?" one guard asks.

"It's the same kidnappers as before," Takamaru shouts, pointing to the dead body that's still lying on the floor. "Inform the King, Princess Luciana is in danger."
"W.. will do!" a guard shouts as he jumps down to where the rest of you are standing. "I figure that I'd ought to take this body as proof then..."
"That's not necessary, he already knows that these attacks have been taking place!" you shout. "Now go and-"

You stop yourself mid-sentence when you notice that the guard now has his sword pointed right at Karel's face.

"Stand down, kid," he says.
"The fuck are you doing!?" Karel shouts. "This ain't the time to be joking!"
"This -isn't- a joke," the other two guards say as they unsheath their swords... and immediately fall to the ground with their skulls bashed in.
"Wha!?" the last remaining guard gasps before he too is sent to the ground, his skull broken open to show... ugh.

"Reinhold, what is this!?" Marianne shouts, tugging hard on the back of your jacket. "Did you do that!?"
"No, that was me," a man says, dusting his hands off... wait a minute.

"I apologize for my tardiness, but I had to give Princess Luciana's subordinate medical care," Gerhard replies. "He wished for me to inform you that there is a large plot to kidnap all of King Celestino's unmarried children... and that the Royal Guard has also been compromised, though you probably already know that by now."
"Who are you, anyways!?" Karel shouts. "How can we trust that you're not with them!?"

"He's a friend, Karel," you say.
"Ah, you are the Prince's new bodyguard," Gerhard nods. "Pardon my rudeness... I am Gerhard, former assassin, acting librarian and current subordinate to Guillaume Arnaud. He is the one who sent me here to keep an eye on you and the others, Princess Marianne."
"Thank you for that..." Marianne replies weakly.

"Mr. Gerhard, inform my Father and Uncle Gregory of this situation," Luciana says, barking out orders like she's a veteran at this. "They went out through that door, we'll join up with you in a bit."

"Just my luck," Gerhard says, shaking his head. "Too late yet again."

Just as he begins to double back to rejoin you, ten? Fifteen? Regardless of the exact number, a LOT of masked men have dropped from the ceiling and now everyone in the room is surrounded by them.
