Benvenuto! The tale of young Luca Medici continues!

The lazy Sunday has come and gone, Bernardo's training with Claudia continued yesterday, and Louis completed his duties with you, bodyguarding and at the end of your time at Mass, speaking with you. As a result of your conversation and bonding, Louis has become more eager and able to serve you.

You are eating a warm breakfast made by Bernardo as your two retainers look towards you, ready for their daily orders.

Bernardo should look for tutors suitable for Claudia, after he finds one we can have him look for business opportunities.

Louis should train five of the guards and pick up some more Italian from them, they might have a french-speaker or two among them if they're sailors.

We should take five guards and go see Isaac.
>>
>>30169030
I did some reading, OP. The current grand duke of Tuscany is Ferdinando I, an ex-cardinal who reformed the justice system and was evenhanded and even soft on crime, cared for his people, fixed the economy, was tolerant of heretics and jews, and restored a significant degree of independence from foreign control.

He's not our birth father 'cause he was still a cardinal and therefore not forman babbies when we were born so we're probably the adopted son of his dead brother Francesco I who died at the same time as his wife, rendering us an orphan. Said brother was into science in a major way.

We pissed a lenient and tolerant ex-churchman off so hard we're being hunted to death. We must've rapemurdered some nuns and burned down a convent or something, this is some shit.

"Bernardo, today I want you to take a break from training Claudia, go and find her a tutor; a Signore who is educated and will work understanding the virtues of keeping his peace and my privacy." Your servant nods his head, a look of relief on his face as he leaves the villa. "Louis, we'll go gather our new guards and see if we can parse together someone who speaks French from their ranks." The two of you exit the villa, pausing to have Louis move the crates of arms and armor inside, and head towards the houses of the guards, gathering them and paying their first month's salaries on the spot.

Fortune seems to favor you, at least for now, as one of the sailors is a fluent French speaker, or at least a dialect of French that Louis can understand, and can also speak Italian. You split your guard forces in half and have Louis train five of them, the current five arming and armoring themselves with the gear from Master Bertelli. With your squadron of five guards you head over to Isaac's.

He greets you happily and shows you the ledger; ever since he had been protected by the Brotherhood, who had loosened their grip on the poorer parts of town, he had double the customers as he usually did. He passes a purse of coin to you, "This is a taste of the money we will make, Signore." Samuel joins up with you and your guard, noting down the money. (+30 florins)

Might as well check the tailor shop, then talk to Giovanni about potential problems and opportunities.
>>
>>30169462

You head over to your tailor shop and see your workers there still drinking and lazing around. "Ah, Signore!" The man who you first spoke to stands up, stumbling a bit before catching himself and smiling, "Greetings, Signore. How can we help you today?" He says and his two comrades hastily hide away their bottles of drink. These men are clearly not hard workers, but to be fair, you have given them very little in the way of help since their acquisition to your empire.

Improve their station, give them incentives, and tell them guild apprenticeships are in their future if they prove themselves.

Tell them that there is little room for those who do not want to enrich themselves in your business, however.

Look into the running of the shop, see if we need to hire an experienced tailor to make this place come to life.

"You three need to focus on your work." You say seriously and look at them, "I understand that your work conditions are not great, but have pride in your craft." You say and look around, "I will look to renovate the place and give you proper materials." You say, telling Samuel to write down a note to see if you can find a Master tailor to guide and lead the place. You check for any money in the coffers and find a mere florin. You pocket it with a grimace. There has to be a better way to get a hold of money than this.

[New System- Passage of Time]

[Medici or not, time waits for no man. As such, time will now be monitored in a loose sense of things. Visiting someone, engaging in an activity with someone, or doing any sort of research or study will constitute an Event. A day is comprised of 4 Events (Morning, Noon, Afternoon, Evening). While you may activate a 5th Event (Night) the danger is higher and guards will question your actions, requiring pay or stealth to ward off. Additionally, each week on Monday, you will receive payments from any Properties that are profitable and wealthy enough to generate funds. Your ledger will update with how much your businesses make. Because gathering money takes an Event, it is recommended you find a way around this.]

The workers apologize and offer to work harder. How do you wish to spend the Morning?

"I will return once I have found a suitable Master to run the shop." You say and leave them to their drinks. Your squadron escorts you to the Tailor's Guild, the obvious place to get not only a Master tailor, but a quality one, and where you can handle your truant guild fees.

After talking to the clerk at the desk and being taken upstairs, your guards waiting outside and keeping dangerous looking people from entering while you are in the building, You are sitting opposite an older bald man, who is titled as Guildmaster Ricardo. "Ah, you are the owner of the Signore Marconi's shop, I see." He says after you explain your situation and he produces a large book full of various notes and details, scanning down the page as he taps it, "Very well, Signore Marconi owes a total of 150 florins in dues to the guild for various missed fees, interest, and other penalties he accrued in his time as shop owner. After paying that, you must pay reinstatement, just as a new member would, a down payment of 300 florins. Which brings your total bill to 450 florins." He says, leaning back and bowing his head cordially.

You breathe out slowly, all of that money and still not even hiring a Master to work for you. Hiring a Master through the Guild will cost you money, and he will demand a greater pay than a non-Guilded Master.

>A (Pay the fees, stick with the Guild)
>B (Don't pay, find a Guild-sanctioned Master)
>C (Pay, find a non-Guild sanctioned Master)
>>
>>30170279
Pay the late fees. Last thing we need is collectors.

Ask him if he happens to have any recommendations for guild-sanctioned masters.

Maybe he has some up-and-coming apprentice or protege or someone he owes a favor to that we could take off his hands, unlikely as it seems, to avoid paying the fee or pay only part of it to. Otherwise, might as well pay the guild membership fee.
>>
>>30170372
are you retarded? That doesn't even make sense
>>
>>30170394
>>30170372

[So you want to just pay the late fees and not rejoin the Guild?]
>>
>>30170394
What doesn't make sense? The only way we get a steady stream of customers is by being guild sanctioned, there's paying for everything now, trying to find a way to make it cost less, or not paying at all and probably selling the shop.

The only way I can think to reduce the fee is if he has a poor cousin that inherits rights or some guy he owes a favor to that he wants to pawn off on us.

>>30170487
Definitely want to pay the late fees, checking around if there's a way for us to split the membership cost with someone or just any way around letting 450 florins through our fingers.

>>30170525
>>30170510

You start to think about a way to avoid the fee, perhaps a newer member, but you remember that the shop doesn't need an apprentice, it needs a Master, someone who is not only a great tailor, but someone is part craftsman and part businessman. You need a true honest-to-goodness Master, and someone who is Guild-certified at least comes with some manner of guarantee as far as his backing goes.

Still though, 450 florins is a great deal of money, and you curse your poor research into Signore's background at running the shop. The shop is quickly becoming a sinkhole of funds. "Very well, I'll pay for it. I will arrange for the money to be brought here later today. For now, I can pay for the late fees." You say and deposit the requisite money in the waiting box. "Thank you, Signore," the man says with a weasel-like smile.

You leave and recollect your guards, telling Samuel to note your intentions of delivering the money to the Guild. The light of the rising sun has become that of the sun approaching noon, between traveling across town, waiting, and dealing with pleasantries, the day is well into its Noon. What shall we do?

You head over to the Antoni Brotherhood and are quickly moved up to speak to Giovani. The man who takes you, the same deep voiced scarred man from before, stops you before you go in to talk to him, "Signore, I have a business proposal to speak to you about. From what I have gathered about you, Signore, you are leading a very interesting path here in Venice. I would like to offer my skills to you, as opposed to working here in the Brotherhood, of which I am not a Brother, but merely a recruit. Will you hear me out?" "Very well, have your piece." You give the man leave and he graciously bows his head, looking around and speaking, "Well, Signore, I am from the Barbary Coast, and was brought here as a young man by my mother. I have led a violent life, Signore, and it shows. The All-Knowing graced me with a strong body and a good mind. I can speak Italian, Arabic, Turkish, and Spanish. I can read. I can write. I have fought many times with sword and pistol. And, what may interest you the most, Signore, is that I have spent a few years as an agent and an assassin for a nobleman in Rome before I moved back to Venice." He watches you, explaining all of this evenly and honestly before continuing, "Marked as I am, I cannot serve well in that capacity, though my talents are not forgotten, but I can teach you. Perhaps even teach the smith's daughter you are training the meaning of silence and propriety?" His offer is given with a small smile, "I do not ask much, Signore, save for monthly pay, a roof over my head, and a position to use my talents to their fullest." Perhaps you can serve in part as a liasion between the Brotherhood and myself, if he is accepting, and also in a variety of other ways - for sure I need a man who knows Turkish and can swing a blade, and your other talents are no small thing."

"Let's see if he doesn't mind, I've no wish to insult the man. I'll tell him after I extend an offer to him he may well enjoy, put him in a good mood. And we might speak of your fee."

"I will speak to Giovani about bringing you onto my group." You say, thanking him and heading upstairs.

"Ah! My bold patron, Signore Medici!" The booming voice of Giovani cannot be mistaken as he walks forward, embracing you and kissing your cheek and then your hand with a bow, "It is an honor to see you, Signore. What can I do for you?" You explain your need for runners and errand-boys, as well as a printer. He pauses before snapping his fingers, "Ah, of course, we can hire the Rizoli boys. They are a group of brothers, four of them, orphans, terrible story, and they have worked for me in the past. if you'd like, I can hire them to deliver and carry things for you. It will be a token fee, so consider it part of my contribution to your noble cause," he says with a smile and a wave of his hand.

You thank him for his gratitude and then ask about the Turk. He nods and smiles, "Ah, yes, Hasan. He's from somewhere on the Barbary Coast, I believe, and he's every bit the dangerous fighter he claims to be. He's terrifying when enraged." Giovani shivers slightly and shrugs, "But, he's not one of the founding members, so, he's just an associate." The older man raises his brows, "Why do you ask?" When you explain the man's offer, Giovani laughs and nods, "Certainly, certainly, if you wish for him, take him! We're allies anyway." You thank Giovani.

"Giovani, tell me, is there anything that is currently troubling the Brotherhood? Perhaps something I could put aright?" His eyebrows raise in surprise at your kind interest before reaching over to a corner of his desk and producing a piece of paper, "Yes, actually. There's a few troubling reports from some of my associates in the Turkish lands that the Long War is going poorly for the Turks. Naturally, they are short on everything as they war, but as a good Christian man, you wouldn't want to oppose the Holy Roman Empire's will, would you?" He asks his question as he looks at you with a smile, "Well, the option I'm offering is for you to funnel funds into a military campaign. Signore, I believe your wealth is great and can turn the tides of wars." You smile politely; clearly he doesn't know how poor you actually are. You aren't that poorly to do, but funding a war is a bit beyond your reach.

"As for opportunities, more towards home," he starts up suddenly, "There's always a few loose nails to be hammered. Hmm...there's a butcher who, with a few other butchers, are starting a sort of "counter-Guild". This, naturally, makes the proper Guild angry. Angry enough to pay, perhaps." You thank him for the lead and ask about Louis training his men. "Ah, thank you for the offer, but no, even your great swordsman cannot influence my Brothers." He continues to show that firm resistance to influence on his men. You thank him and stand.

"The Butcher's Guild? Certainly, here, let me give you a paper with my seal on it, and they'll let you talk to the Guildmaster straight off, he'll know what it's about." He quickly makes a mark in wax with his ring and hands it to you, which you pocket and thank him. In many ways, Giovani is much more than meets the eye.

You exit the room and Hasan is sitting down near the stairs down. He stands up and croaks out in his deep voice, "So, what's the verdict?"

"Hasan, let's go for a walk, shall we?" He hops up at your suggestion and falls into line with your guards, who give him a wide berth. He's easily a good six inches taller than them and looks to be twice their size. You walk towards the Butcher's Guild, carrying Giovani's letter, but on your way you pass the Turkish brewery. The little girl, who seems permanently on door-duty, calls out in Turkish, to Hasan, what sounds like a question. He responds back at length and you stand still, letting him chat with the girl, who calls out for her Father.

The two large men meet one another and speak in rolling Turkish, seeming to square off their sizes against the other before Hasan calls over, "Signore, come, this man says he recognizes you." You oblige his request, walking over to bow your head to the Turk at the brewery. "This man," Hasan starts, "says that you were here a few days ago, jabbering something he didn't understand. This man is named Suleiman, and he works for another Turk, named Mehmed, after the Sultan, who sells his beer to the local bars. He says to beware the woman you employ, as her heart lies between gold coins, and her loyalty moves as easily as the wind." The larger Turk nods along, not understanding the Italian, but emphasizing the point. You thank him, remembering this and Hasan's Turkish skills.

You have Hasan thank Suleiman and inquire about the man's business a bit. The large Turk seems to be doing well for himself, Mehmed gets him regular contacts and works through an organization himself, to hide their Turkish ancestry. He seems relatively happy with his station in life. With that, you make your way to the Butcher's.

After presenting the letter, you and Hasan are brought to meet the Guildmaster, who seems utterly terrified at the massive Turk. "Signore, is this...brutish Turk your bodyguard?" The man hisses his words to you in very formal Italian, hoping that Hasan cannot understand. For his part, Hasan keeps his face blank, ignoring any words the man says about him. You assure the Guildmaster that Hasan is merely here to assist you with other business, though the fat Master has a hard time calming down fully, he sits down and explains the counter-Guild.

"What lunacy this is, a group of un-Guilded Butchers want to unite and undercut the Guild, claiming we're a corrupt group of money-worshipers. That is dangerous and sacrilegious talk from a group of peasants!" He angrily clenches his flabby fist and looks at you through watery eyes, "Signore, I implore you, remove the troublemakers from our midst, send these peasants the message God wants them to have; that we wealthy few are entitled to rule by virtue of our station," he says with a satisfied smile.

He seems a bit on edge now, but you have phrased everything perfectly, he cannot attack your words without harming your desire to help, so he begins, "Ah, great Signore, should their leader, Signore Romulo, find himself unwilling to lead or unable to, their alliance would shatter. Perhaps he commits unholy deeds that would bring the ire of the Church on him, or perhaps he has an accident. The Lord works in mysterious ways. As far as your reward..." he pauses and rubs his flabby jaw, "The Lord takes care of his flock, perhaps some extra wealth could find its way to you, maybe something similar to this?" He gestures to a heavy strongbox sitting on his desk, the collection box for Guild fees for the past month, "Such wealth is boundless in Heaven, why could it not happen to you?" Yeah, I'll second this.

Let's not bring Hassan to talk to the Butcher though. I'd like him to spy on the man for a week as a test of his skulls, and that 'd be easier if he is unknown to the man.

We'd get exiled twice.

However, a collection box for the month's fees might be pretty empty if the guild members have risen against the guild.

Tell him if we succeed he's gonna owe you a minor favor and specify a specific sum of florins, not all that much but not nothing, just what a lawyer would ask for arbitrating a dispute perhaps.

Then we'll go to the butchers and see if we can make this work.

You want to know how much is in the box, but being so straightforward seems to be counter to what this man wants, he has been dancing around the fact that he's basically hiring you to remove his rival any way possible. You look at the box and then smile at him, thanking him for his time, but as you do so you "stumble" and place your hand on the box and shift it, feeling its extremely heavy weight from dozens and dozens of coins. "Ah, forgive me, Signore." He gives you a smile as you adjust your cloak, "Allow me to offer you this," you say imperiously, "I will resolve this issue today. I will demand a token sum, only 30 florins for my work, but my good will and kindness in pay will be repaid eventually by you; a token for a token of your good work." He nods rapidly, "Yes, Signore, that is acceptable to me. If you can finish it today I will be most in your debt. A very large token for you, indeed." You smile and excuse yourself.

Once outside you talk to Hasan, asking him about what he thinks of the issue. The Turk laughs, a gravelly hoarse laugh, "The man is a coward. He fears all who do not conform to his way of life, and his Guild doesn't seem to be in any poor condition judging from how many coins I heard shifting in there. He panics at nothing. If you speak to this Romulo, perhaps a bloodless, victimless solution can be reached."

You move with Hasan to Romulo's shop, having Hasan wait outside with the guards.

Inside the very small shop you see a young man, in his late-twenties, chopping meat and wrapping it in paper. He looks up at you and waves his bloody cleaver, "Ah, bongiorno, Signore." He puts the cleaver into the wood and and walks around the counter, "I am Romulo, how can I assist you?" You look him over and think about how best to proceed.

Stick your hand out in a singularly un-noble fashion. You're a man of the people.

Introduce yourself and tell him you'd like to create some harmony in the neighborhood and resolve this dispute with the butcher's guild you've been hearing about before it takes food off of everyone's table and could he tell you what the problem is.

He is surprised at your offer to shake hands and takes your, tentatively, shaking it and when you state your purpose he gets a bit pale. "Please, Signore, do not bring your wrath down on me. Forgive me, but this was simply a bar-room idea that got out of hand. The Guild, you see, they raised their prices each month until now, it costs nearly all my poor shop can make to even consider entry, and that's not even leaving enough money to feed me or my mother." The man looks upstairs and gestures, "She's ill, Signore, and I work for the both of us. I was talking with a few of the other poorer butchers and we drunkenly decided to create our Poor Butcher's Guild, a place that all of the lower-class butchers could join free of the Guild, but assuring quality from one another." His voice is slightly panicked as he tells you his worries, "Forgive me, I know you must be here to end this somehow, just tell me what I need to do, but I beg you, do not force me to join the Guild again." He says, dropping on his knees to beg you.

You are a bit surprised at the vehemence of the man's words; it has been a while since someone begged so outrageously to you.

>A (Write-in your solution)

Simple, we buy his shop and add it to our budding commercial empire. That way he can get favourable loans from our Jews if he ever needed money. Furthermore, the Guildmaster didn't say that we had to make him rejoin the Guild, only to discourage him from forming his own (which looks like is the case anyway)

Tell him to stand up. All will be well.

Tell him that, firstly, you'll arrange a loan at a low rate if he needs it to get a doctor for his mother, and if the other butchers need a bit of cash to keep moving.

Secondly, the man will agree to step down, for now, if the guild re-institutes previous prices and provides a guarantee for them for several months, but they'll make a profit because at a bulk rate, as from now on the butchers in this area will do their purchasing jointly, allowing the guild to move a greater volume of raw goods and make its money that way.

This is simple financing. You can provide a low-rate lone for this solution the community can benefit from jointly, and if absolutely necessary you will help them create a joint-stock company and work within the system with a single licensed representative to work with the guild (yourself) if that becomes a necessity.

If the guild doesn't go for it, well, there's other ways to purchase provisions in the city and they just lose business.

"How many number in your Poor Guild?" He looks down and then faces you once he finishes counting, "Six of us, Signore." You nod and continue asking, "Are any of you paying Guild fees currently, or are you part of the Guild?" He shakes his head and you bid him to rise. Once he stands you smile,

"Very well, I can offer you an excellent deal. I will give you money for your mother, and money to help give you and the other Poor Butchers a kick start. I will get the Guild to lower their prices again and to swear against retribution against you. You buy from the Guild, as the rules state, and I will shield you. All of this will I do, in exchange, for you to abandon your Poor Guild." He nods rapidly, "Yes, thank you, Signore! I can do that. I just need three hundred florins to treat my mother; her medicines come from Asia Minor and Araby, they are expensive and she requires excellent doctors. I will use all the rest of the money to help my allied shops." He kisses your hand and kneels again, but rises after remembering what you told him.

Bid him farewell for now and go back to the guild.

Tell the guildsman that you have interceded and the rival guild will disband for the moment provided he accepts your conditions, and it would be likelier to cease to be a threat if he could create some goodwill by having a doctor friend of his visit them and tend to a few of the sick.

Aside from that, these butchers don't have the kind of sales turnover that will support his prices, but they'll be able to buy larger quantities more rarely so he'll have a more efficient business with less loss because you're going to organize when the meat will be sold, and thus create a way for him to eliminate costs from meat rotting in warehouses.

This is for the best, it saves laborers in the market and as the district improves they'll be able to sell more.

You head back to the Guildmaster, and with a bit of Medici maneuvering, you manage to get him to agree, on paper, to reinstate Guild fees from three months before the Poor Guild began, and ensure the man a year's worth of time under that price. The Guildmaster, true to his word, gives you a box, which contains 86 florins, a very handsome sum from a butcher's guild.

When you mention a doctor the Guildmaster says that he will organize what he can, but as he speaks an attendant comes in, saying a man is looking to speak to the nobleman who is visiting the Guildmaster.

You go downstairs and see Romulo, hat in his hands, "Signore, forgive my outrageous demands..." he says and bows, "I was drawn in by desperation, I consulted with another doctor while you were here, and I only require one hundred florins for treatment and to start up our businesses efficiency."

He thanks you and runs off with the note, light on his feet. You turn to head up the stairs, finalizing the paperwork with the Guildmaster before heading back downstairs.

Hasan drops from a near-by roof with a heavy sound as his great mass lands on heavy boots, "Signore!" The large Turk runs over to you, out of breath from his moving across the roofs of Venice, leaning over and catching his breath, "Signore, forgive my impetuous decisions, but I investigated once the butcher had left his home. There is no mother, Signore. His upstairs loft is empty. Also, after a bit of quick investigation, his shop is mostly empty. That man may have been a butcher once, but he's trying to steal money from the Guild." He stands up tall and calms his heart down, looking around. "Where did he run off to? Back home? You take a deep breath, not used to this kind of extraneous activity, and run after Hasan. This level of physical strain is more than you've ever been doing, and though the sun is setting, your exhaustion makes your muscles scream out in rebellion to your demands, your lungs burn and your clothes feel uncomfortably sweaty and hot.

You reach the gate and see a rare sight. A struggle is happening at the gates, a big chaotic mess. Venetian guards are fighting with their polearms against both your guards and a larger group of rather unwashed individuals carrying clubs and other improvised weapons, such as hoes and pitchforks. Hasan is in the mix, keeping himself out of the fight as he shoves over pairs of men at a time and pushes through the melee.

"Signore!" A familiar voice pierces the din of the scrap as Bernardo runs up next to you, a meek looking man with the robes of a scholar on in tow. "What in the name of God is happening!?" You don't have much time to explain as Hasan finally breaks through the crowd, continuing to run out of the city's gates. This is becoming a massive public mess.

You load your words and gaze with all the ice and hate you can, trying to overwhelm him with your malice, though it is rare for you to use it, the peasant cracks.

"A man ran through the gates not a few minutes ago, boarded a boat, after three men with armor and weapon of noble guards tried to attack him as he passed, and the watch saw this and assumed some sort of a rebellion or something. Short after, a group of these men, who were in hiding nearby, jumped out and attacked the guards and the noble guards." He says and you throw him away from you in disgust.

You think to try and use your wealth to calm this mess, but as you think the fight progresses, the peasants managing to run back into the city, scattering away. "Bernardo, you take the guards after the butcher. If you find Hasan, grab him from the water and hurry after him. He can't be going too far, but he's trying to reach Mestre." You figure out his plan easily from his trajectory and his time of flight. The darkness of night is coming and the man only has to lose a particularly determined Turk and your guards to flee with a hundred florins, a hundred florins of your money.

The five of them bolt, taking a few florins to take a boat NOW, and you head over to the guards. They point their weapons at you, still in fighting mode, and you stare them back down, "Put those down, how dare you!" You decide to lean on your nobleman's privilege and intimidate them. One of them steps forward and demands, "Are those guards yours?" You nod and try to regard him as contemptuously as you can, "Yes, of course they are, they were on my orders to apprehend a thief who robbed me." The captain fumbles for words, clearly wanting to arrest you, but not having much to back his words up, he bows his head, "Very well, Signore, how can we help?" You order them to get boats with lanterns and hunt down the man. They, begrudgingly, go after him.

You wait, impatiently, on the shore, seeing the guard's boats drift around, trying to find anyone. Apparently your initial party had long since gone after the thief.

Nearly half an hour later Bernardo and your guards return, empty-handed.

Hasan has not yet returned, but as a former sailor, you are certain that he can swim quite well. You have no doubt that he would pursue that man to the ends of the earth.

"Forgive me, Signore..." Bernardo huffs, exhausted from thirty minutes of constant rowing, his face showing his exhaustion and strain, "But we weren't able to find him, or Hasan." The scholar, who, to his credit, remained next to you, speaks up, "There, there, Signore Bernardo, you did well." You give the man a piercing glare and sigh, "It's alright, Bernardo, you did all that you could."

Night has fully settled down on the city and the waters surrounding Venice are an inky roiling sea of water, vision is impossible and the guard's boats are coming back to shore.

You wait on the shore and, sure enough, a thoroughly soaked Hasan struggles to the shore, barely managing to walk ashore as he collapses onto his face, exhausted for his nearly two hours of constantly effort. However, it appears his work is not fruitless. Even collapsed so he holds an even more miserable looking butcher, tied securely by the hand with a length of rope. The butcher is either dead or unconscious from the trip back to shore, but Hasan is apparently bereft of the money.

You give Bernardo leave to return a hundred florins to Isaac with our deepest apologies. He leaves you with the issue of moving Hasan. You make sure he's alive, and sure enough his powerful chest draws breath, but he's freezing cold from exposure.

Your guards, worn from the fight, and then the row, manage between the four of them to carry the massive Turk between them and drag the butcher's body with them back to your villa. They collapse on the step and the door opens, Louis appearing with the other guards, all of them hauling everyone inside, you pulling up the rear with a vindictive look on your face.

"Signore! What an exciting day you've had!" Louis says as he props Hasan up on the table and shrouds him in dry table-cloths, changing him out of his wet clothing and getting him warm by the fire. Even unconscious he refuses to yield the butcher, who is very dead, from the rope.

On the table rests a box marked with Isaac's seal and gold's weight.

"Ah, a strange story, Seigneur," the Frenchman says as he hangs up Hasan's clothes to dry, "Not an hour ago a figure appeared beyond the window, a figure dressed in a flowing cloak like a holy man, wearing a theater mask, dropped it in front of our door and fled before I could accost them."

You open the box and count through the florins, only 40 remain of the initial 100. "No one has touched it once it was moved inside?" Your voice is cold and serious as you regard Louis and the guards, all of whom agree that no one touched it.

This could be worse. You are out 60 florins, and the butcher is apparently dead on the line from Hasan dragging him through the canal. You have learned a valuable lesson in real-world business though; not every story can be bought at face value, and you must be more careful about letting things happen slowly, as well as operating within the laws. You are certain the city guard are going to be investigating you.

Bernardo returns and sits down without a word, regarding you curiously, but making no demands.

You pay the guards a bonus pittance for their extra work and thank them, telling the five that served today they will be training tomorrow.

Hasan wakes not too long after you begin your story, and you welcome him to your larder. He walks into the kitchen and sounds of a beast eating prey fill the villa as he eats like a demon. Bernardo and Louis look to you, blocking out the sound as best they can, and listen to your recount.

"Signore," Bernardo says with some frustration, "forgive me for not accompanying you today, had I been watching, this would not have happened. You are a young and good man, but the world is not nearly as kind as you can be." He says and you feel slightly chastised, though not unduly so. Louis nods, "Seigneur, I would have made a similar mistake, though mine would stem from pure gregariousness rather than ignorance." A lord being comforted by his servants, is this acceptable? The question lingers as Hasan wanders into the room, the cloth wrapped around his waist.

His chest is just as much the tapestry of scars as his face and neck. "I am glad your wealth was acquired, Signore. So...am I worthy to be in your employ yet?" He asks with a slightly cheeky smile. "But," he says, pausing your words, "before you speak, I must state my price. I will work for the money in that box every two months, 40 florins."

"Hasan, the very fact you have to ask is an affront. You have earned your keep and far more." You push the box towards him and he takes it with a smile, "Thank you, Signore, I will not let you down." Bernardo clears his throat, "Forgive me, Signore, but while I am thrilled our empire grows, our home does not. This villa will be insufficient to house any more than the four of us, and should we need to house anymore we will be sharing rooms like a barracks. The three of us have done that before, we would like to not do so again. So, with your leave, I would like to find proper housing for you tomorrow." His logic is sound, you realize, but the villa is borrowed at the moment, costing you nothing, can you afford another expense?

"Very well, Signore," Bernardo says with a bow of his head, "I will find something for us to use. Three stories will be what I aim for." He says and looks over Hasan, "You are a man of limitless energy, our Signore will have good use for you." It's a compliment, you realize, a rare thing for Bernardo to give to anyone but you.

"This places us in a difficult position in several ways. Isaac's faith will be shaken in us, the butcher's Guild expects people to pay guild fees and buy meat from them, and then we have the city watch breathing down our necks." You lean back in your chair and wave your hand, a cup of wine being place in it by Louis who smiles as he does so, "I believe this is the appropriate time." Hasan sits down at the table and wraps his head again before speaking to you, "I don't understand the Frenchman very well. I can make out bits and pieces. This may be an issue." He lays out for the moment.

You can't take more of this and finish your wine in a single gulp. "We will address these issues in the morning. For now, everyone to bed." You dismiss everyone and they all leave you to your thoughts.

Bernardo sits down and updates the ledger before going to sleep.

[Just did.]

You call on Bernardo before he leaves to drag the dead man into the cellar. He wordlessly heaves the small man over his shoulder and deposits him at the base of the staircase. In a few minutes he returns and bears a small drawing of something on the man's shoulder-blade. "Here we go, he has this mark on his back. I'm not sure exactly where it's from, but maybe we can ask Giovani, he seems to be up to date on the local criminal element."

You thank him and pass into sleep.

~~~~Next Day~~~~~
Your sleep is disturbed as Bernardo wakes you, an unusual thing as he never interrupts your sleep, "Signore, forgive the intrusion, but a pack of children are at the door asserting you wanted to see them?" You swear and rise, telling him to hold them off as you dress quickly and descend to see them.
Four boys, all of them around twelve years, wearing mostly rags, but all of them wearing nice shoes, see you descend and call out, "Ah! Signore! Bongiorno!" They all bow and the tallest of them speaks up, "I am Zago, and these are my brothers. You wanted a courier service?" Their energy is disgusting at this hour.
Bernardo feeds you and the other men in the house, letting the boys eat what's left in the pots and containers after he's done serving everyone. "Thank you for the food, Signore," the youngest boy says in a laughable voice. Bernardo grunts, apparently not overly fond of children.
"So, Signore, today's another day, what's the order?" Bernardo and the others face you all at once. This is becoming stressful almost.
After that, go and talk to Isaac, smooth things over, I'll come and grab you later. " He nods and departs, enacting your orders. "Louis, train the guards as yesterday. How were they?" He flourishes his mustache with a smile, "They took to the lesson like a duck to water, Seigneur. I will be just as firm on the others." You nod at his agreement and look at Hasan, "As we go, I want you to teach me about what you know about intrigue. Your realization that we were being lied to is what allowed us to recover even a part of our funds, otherwise we would have been out one hundred florins sleeping. I want to know how you did that. After you train with me, in the noon, go and talk to your fellow Turks if they recognize this symbol; copy it and show it around, but be subtle."
You breathe in deeply, "Boys. I want one of you to keep communications good with Isaac the moneylender, another of you to go check on Andre the Smith, the next to go to my Tailor's shop and make sure they are being supported by the Guild. The last of you, stick with me, in case I need something sent quickly." The three you ordered to leave bolt, leaving Zago, the eldest, with you.
"Let's away to the Brotherhood." Without further ado your troop goes marching through the streets, a regular entourage now. He welcomes you, Hasan, and Zago to the cellar of the building where he is practicing shooting. "Ah! My dearest Signore, welcome." Giovani embraces you and does as he has done since yesterday, kissed you like a brother, apparently this is going to be a recurring thing.
Formalities are dealt with and you produce the symbol for him to look at. "Hmmm..." The older man pauses, looking at the mark before snapping, "Ah, yes. I can see why none of you would know this, but I'm surprised you don't recognize it, Hasan. This is the mark of a prisoner aboard a French corsair's vessel." The Turk nods slowly, "Oh, that's right, I've seen this once before. You're correct." "Any non-corrupt guards? There are a few, most of them are the youngest or the oldest; the ones who remember duty or have forgotten everything save for it." The man says as he leans back against the wall, loading his pistol as he speaks. You describe the butcher to him and he shakes his head, "Can't say that he rings a bell, sounds like a very common man. But, I'll say this, if he was captured by the French, he's either English, or from the south of Italia, or perhaps even a very light-skinned Spaniard. What he's doing here is perplexing, but what's more, is he's part of some big organization, he's a bottom rung on the ladder." You look at him curiously as he smiles, "A good kingpin never reveals himself unless he's certain of the outcome, one way or another."
He aims the weapon downrange and fires it off, hitting the target fairly well with a nod. He continues lazily, "My organization is not so much a criminal organization, especially not anymore, but more of a protection ring. True crime, like what you seem to be chasing, is more the realm of the guardia, the Church, the law, or the theater." Hasan nods at all of those, "Certainly, Signore," he says, looking back at you, "The worst I ever did while working for Giovani was knock a few windows in."
Bernardo, his job done, keeps at your side as you walk.
[Event 2 Begins]
You wander around the area where you met Romulo and ask nearly every single man about the "Poor Butcher's Guild", and not a single one knows. You find poor butchers who would meet the qualifications and they claim ignorance. Finally, after talking to nearly twenty of them, you find one who seems a bit too shifty. "Signore, I implore you to tell me what burdens you," you say softly, coaxing him out of the room long enough for Hasan to grab him by his collar and slam him against the wall, hard enough to startle, but not enough to harm. The old man nearly cries out as Bernardo draws his knife, and you walk forward, hands in your pockets as you look into his eyes carefully, "Now, what's on your mind, my son?"
The old man swallows hard and speaks, "The Poor Butcher's Guild...I heard about it after I got my money. I don't make much here, and a few weeks ago a group of men came in, dressed well, but foreign, I don't know from where, and they paid me fifteen florins to stop paying my Guild fees and, if asked, to say I was part of the Poor Butcher's Guild. I didn't know what it meant, but that kind of money doesn't happen much. Please, please don't kill me, Signore." His words and actions convey true terror. You gesture and Hasan lets him go, Bernardo putting his knife away. He slides to the ground and you crouch in front of him, "Now, Signore, tell me more about these foreigners."
A few minutes of gentle Medici questioning later, never sullying your hands with threats or violence, simply a velveteen knife as your Father was, you learn quite a good deal about these foreigners. There were three men; one a Turk or a Moor, and the other two were darker skinned like Sicilians, but were probably Spaniards.
Apologize for frightening the old man.
Inform him that you've negotiated lower guild fees and price decreases in meat, including bulk deals for those willing to make purchases together, and that you were doing so out of a desire to bring harmony to the community before this turned into what may be a plot.
Inform him that he has helped the city, and if he'll quietly accept the consequences he can keep the florins, and that you'll perhaps call on him again to check for news, but that the poor butcher's guild is no more.
Ask Hasan what he thinks.
>>
You help the older man to his feet, apologizing vigorously for the actions of your comrades and tell him of the things you have orchestrated with the Guild, causing him to be surprised at the price drop. He ardently agrees to keep silent on your appearance and thanks you for your mercy.
You step back with Hasan and Bernardo and speak to them softly, "What do you think of this?" Bernardo looks a bit perplexed as he speaks slowly, "This is an odd move. Clearly they aren't here for any sort of national purpose, but maybe they're some sort of criminal group who decided that Venice was the correct city to settle in, seeing as it is so wealthy?" Hasan pondered and proposed a counter point, "Alternatively, Signore, they are a roaming group of vagrants and thieves, perhaps masquerading as sailors or something of the sort to get around free of observation, and from there they simply target large cities and the nobles within it for their great wealth. I believe most of these men to be poor, former criminals, who would be drawn to a charismatic man, perhaps someone who was one noble and lost his estate, or someone who was a distant son of a family and received no part in his birthright." The two theories both hold weight, for now, however, you think the one closer to the truth is...
>A (Bernardo, Venice is famous for its wealth and power, why not target it?)
>B (Hasan, that is an excellent description and makes sense.)
>>
>>30178555
They both make sense, but we don't know enough to judge further.
Let's talk to the other butchers, and tell them we negotiated a price drop in guild fees on the request of another (unspecified) butcher and should others they know need representation they may come to us. Let's not mention the poor butcher guild. Coordinating meat purchases is a thing we can do now, at least. Maybe we can make a few florins off the top and pay off the interest.
At least we can gain reputation from this mess.
>>
>>30178555
yeah i'd rather not lean one way here, such groups can be as dangerous and predatory as they can useful and i don't want to show up hasan or bernardo. staying neutral on this one
>>
>>30178672
>C (Remain Neutral but take note of both's thoughts)
>>
>>30178636
>>30178672
Hard to say, the truth is very elusive in times like this. "Both are good ideas, and we have to keep a cool head about this." Both of your aides agree on that and after paying one last good-bye to the old man, apologizing again you take your leave and inform the poor butchers of the fate of their place in the Guild and the good news they will have in their futures.
As you leave the quarter without anything particular in mind a young man wearing white robes appears, it looks to be an altar server or something of the sort, and he stops before you, "Signore, Signore, pardon my interrupts, but Padre Carlo wishes to speak to you. He says it concerns your guards and yesterday's events."
>A (Answer the wish of the Priest)
>B (Deny him)
>C (Postpone him)
[Event 3]
A few minutes later you are sitting in front of the Priest whose face is red with anger and who glares at you from across the table, "My son, I am extremely disappointed in your behavior yesterday. I have been told many times in the past days about how goodly and godly a man you were, a kind noble is a rare thing, but now I hear of you attacking city guards and ordering them about like they are your servants. My son, this disappoints me greatly." The man holds up a letter, "This is to Signore Sarpi, and while I was more than happy to go draw that recluse from his lair to speak to a man such as you, I am now unconvinced by your motivations. You seek to become another blight on this city, ruling from on high and causing suffering in those beneath you?" The man stands up, his fists on the desk, "Well, what have you to say for yourself, Signore?"
>A (I'm not taking this.)
>B (Apologetic response, smooth things over)
>C (Call in Hasan.)
>>
>>30178937
>B (Apologize and smooth things over)
BUT we must explain the situation
>>
>>30178937
>>B (Apologetic response, smooth things over)
The shit is this? Like any of this was our fault.
We only got in a fight with those guards because they were useless to the point of obstruction.
>>
>>30178937
"Father, by the grace of God, I swear to you the following is true. I went into this matter with charity in my heart, was robbed, and did my best to make amends and settle affairs bloodlessly throughout. I was not without blame here, and know my limits well enough to admit this, but I am not entirely to blame either. I will offer you this - I shall tell you what took place, and you can advise me best how to make amends."
Tell him about hearing of the guild dispute, interceding on behalf of the poor, and being struck deeply at the suffering you saw, and then being robbed and all the rest.
Let's leave out the conspiracy bit and just say the poor guild would have been a foolish way for the poor to confront the powerful and things would have gone badly, and that it is no more, but that the 'butcher' who lied to us was marked - you have been told - as a prisoner of some sort.
Offer to make a donation to the poor to help undo any damage caused.
>>
>>30178937
Not that I don't like what you're doing QM, but this kind of nonsense fight happened often enough when nobles got involved so I'd hope the trouble isn't too great in patching things up.
>>
>>30179066
>>30179003
>>30179035
"Padre, please, allow me to explain the situation. My guards were in pursuit of a thief, and I ordered them to apprehend him, without taking his life, and when they drew their arms, the guardia assumed I was attacking an innocent man." You continue and tell him of the whole affair, excluding nothing.
After the whole of it he breathes in slowly and begins, "If what you say is true, then it is a fantastic story. Signore, I will take your past deeds and put them before your current. Allow my apologies for being so forward, however, seeing a goodly man fall to vice, especially one as gifted as yourself, is burdensome on my heart. I am pleased to see that it is over. However, you must atone for the dead man, be he pauper or king, his life is on your head, as the Turk knows no good god. A donation, or penitent prayer, is common here."
>A (Pay the donation)
>B (Pray, it will take up the rest of our day)
>C (Do both)
>>
>>30179117
>C (Do both) spend as LITTLE FLORINS AS POSSIBLE, we are bleeding florins
Use our priestlyness
(whos say the Turk is islamic, He could be a Catholic convert)
>>
>>30179117
>>B (Pray, it will take up the rest of our day)
>>
>>30179117
Both. This will win us points with him and he'll give us a better introduction to Sarpi.
Ask him if he knows anyone trustworthy among the Guardia to tell of this bizzarre scuffle, should you feel the need to involve them.
>>
>>30179210
>>30179158
>>30179168
[Padre probably assumes that like most Turks he is Islamic.]
"I will, of course, pray devoutly. Allow me to tell my retinue that they may depart for home, save my assistant who will stay with me in prayer. Additionally, I will donate ten florins, as I am recovering from a robbery. More will be given in the future, Padre, on this, you have my word." You retrieve Bernardo, who is visibly sour at the news, but maintains his professional conduct as he walks in the main hall with you and begins praying.
[And on that note, we will end just before the eventful night ahead. The next game session will be posted on the Twitter account by tomorrow at the latest, but it will, most likely, be Thursday afternoon until evening. I'll archive the thread, thank you very much for playing. Have a good night, everyone!]
>>
>>30179243
Thanks for the thread, QM. Nice job.
>>
>>30179263
[Thank you very much! The thread is archived. I hope everyone continues to enjoy, please keep an eye on the Twitter for updates.]
>>
>>30179305
Awesome, Before we end this, What is Hasan, Is he Islamic(Shia or Sunni) or Catholic?
>>
>>30179357
[He is a Sunni Muslim, or at least was raised and grew into one. His current views on religion are less than favorable.]
>>
>>30179243
Awesome thread thanks QM.
>>
>>30179357
He's an atheist.
>>
>>30179410
Thanks for the thread, OP.
I'm curious if you or anyone else minds the odd bit of deep historical focus of the quest like in this post >>30169282
Some people have complained about it elsewhere so I thought I'd ask.
>>
>>30179500
[I don't personally mind it. I think it's interesting and, so long as it doesn't become invasive, (ie people chanting that what I said/do is an anachronism every time it happens), it gives me an interesting venue of thought to travel down. Though, you should see my browser, I have like 40 tabs open related to all sorts of tangential history, geography, and finances of the times.)
>>
>>30179551
So we can do shit like using whatever dutch connection we have to try and introduce windmills and water wheels to the arsenale to create more automation if we make it big enough to call shots there, so long as we don't bitch hard about anachronism?
Admittedly they're both things that existed in this period, so arguably this is more meta than anachronistic.
>>
>>30179640
[Yeah, there's meta and there's anachronism. Like, knowing about the Scholar? Or our Father? These are reasonable in-character things to know. Knowing about Windmills and how they work or things like that, such as contemporary events happening across the continent, that's gonna get veto'd. Meta is bad. Calling anachronism is ok if I were to be grievously off, like bringing out a gatling gun or something.]
>>
>>30179682
we can never be too serious in these kinds of things however and we can't have history dictacte everything
Last thread somebody made mention of a rpeating gun of sorts and you shut that down
>>
>>30179723
[Correct, it was a theory made by an Italian scholar. Expecting someone to create a blue-print from that and then forge it, knowing very little, is a tall order. Perhaps if he were a bit more friendly, or we offered to pay a great deal, it could be achieved. Perhaps.]
>>
>>30179723
QM's gonna put in or leave out whatever he wants to, ultimately.
Though the dutch being famous for complex pumps and dykes is kind of general knowledge in this period for anyone with a grasp of geography and politics. Printing was a thing, globes were a thing, etc.
Anyway, let's not get off on a not particularly fun argument about how the QM should do shit, this is a fun quest and I ain't complaining just because my superposed load thing wasn't something we got in thread two for not a lot of money.
>>
>>30179768
Thanks for the leniency, we'll try to keep it reasonable.
>>
>>30179813
>>30179794
>>30179723
[I appreciate your reasonable stance on things. More than historical accuracy, more than anything else, I want to tell an interesting story with you guys. And so far we're succeeding. Let's just keep doing what we're doing!]
>>
>>30179831
Works for me, OP. See you thursday.
