Ok, sorry about the late start.

In case you don't check the twitter, fair warning- it's snowing outside pretty badly. While for a lot of you this is a 'yeah, so?' moment, I live in piedmont NC, they tend to panic around here and the internet and power can be twitchy with snow and ice on the ground. Should be ok, but... if i drop off suddenly, well, you know why. If that happens, I'll do my dead level best to at least put out a tweet or something, and we'll try and reschedule.

Let's see... other than that, I got nothing, haha.

Archives are here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20witches%201989

Kinda massive, I know.

There's a pastebin character sheet and primer of sorts here: http://pastebin.com/zFxWNup1 if you don't want to mess with the archives in full. It does a pretty good job of getting you up to speed in a hurry. Well, a hurry compared to the archives in full.

++

Beneath your fighter, the English countryside slides serenely by- You've adopted a more-or-less north-easterly course, tying on with Wattisham's tower. The controller there laughed when you identified your home plate, sympathizing with the difficulties of air traffic control coming out of the castle. He's a nice enough sort, you figure, though he's stuck you at angels fifteen and not given you a whole lot of leeway for anything other than straight and level flight. According to him, it's business as usual- you'd need to be outside controlled airspace, like out over the north sea, to get crazy.

You're almost tempted to ask for a route out, too. So far you've been busy enough just running through the usual checks, but everything appears to be working nearly flawlessly. Not that you honestly expected anything less. The fighter, though, seems to want to cut loose- and you can well understand the feeling.

1/3 ( I think, spacing is funny here)
>>
In the back, Merlin's been quiet- only speaking up when she needed you to do something- though she's linked one of your MFDs to her display in back, allowing you to follow her as she works through the wyvern's powerful sensor suite and weapons computer. Even now, she's 'playing' with birds, using the detection gear in the fighter to paint single birds- gulls, you think, mostly- and track them briefly, before cycling onto a set of new targets. The fact that she's able to do so as quickly as she is impresses you, and, you think, should scare the hell out of anyone else. Birds are a hell of a lot smaller and harder to detect than fighter aircraft, let alone anything bigger.

Personally, though, you're appreciating the new canopy and HUD the most. Fact was, you were never wholly comfortable with the old one- if you'd taken a bad hit or lost the computer, you'd have been almost totally blind. At least this way, you can see through the canopy, even if you do lose the HUD and your cockpit display systems.

23 (sorry about the size here. like I said, spacing was bad)
>>
There's a host of other little improvements, too. The problem is, you haven't been able to really try out the new turbines at all though- even with a lot of the peacetime rule of flight restrictions waived in light of wartime necessity, the airspace over this part of the isles is pretty strictly controlled and too crowded, at any rate, for the free flying you'd like to do. You're pretty sure the north sea is uncontrolled, and you've heard Rosalie can get you cleared into the air over Normandy, both of which have their ups and downs. Out over the north sea, if something goes wrong, you're on you're own- but the air is also pretty quiet there, no one really likes flying over a body of frigid water where the weather can change from calm to stormy in a matter of minutes.

Normandy, on the other hand, would be a little more crowded- certainly more so once you got over it- but there's plenty of assistance and airbases in the area, just, you know, in case.

[] Request a vector out to the North sea- you'd rather have plenty of air.
[] Have Merlin get hold of Rosalie and see if she can get you into Norman airspace. You'd rather have help on hand.

[x] Have Merlin get hold of Rosalie and see if she can get you into Norman airspace. You'd rather have help on hand.

Tired of the quiet- and the relatively boring task of flying straight and level- You finally open up the intercom.

“Hey Merlin.”

“Y-yes?” She asks, sounding surprised. You chuckle.

“See if you can get Rosalie and take her up on her offer to get into the airspace over Normandy. I'll get a vector out from Wattisham.”

“Ok, O-one second.” She says.

Under a minute later, Rosalie's voice filters through your helmet speakers. “Frank? Merlin tells me you want cleared into the airspace over Normandie?” She says, her accent coming through clearly when she says Normandy.

“Yeah, this straight and level and slow isn't getting anything done here.” You say.

“S-speak for yourself. I'm getting lots d-done.” Merlin quips from the back.

Rosalie laughs. “One moment. I have to call the ADA commander in the area, but he is an old family friend, and owes me a favor.”

True to her word, a minute later, she's back on your headset. “Ok, Frank? You're good. Here, let me give you your transponder settings, read them back to me, ok?”

It only takes a few minutes to set up for the flight- the French air force and army are both extremely paranoid about aircraft over their country- but at the same time, you can't really blame them. France has been playing host to the vast majority of the NATO supply and support structure, despite past grievances with the alliance. While it's not vulnerable by any means, an attack here could see the war moving into eastern France- the last thing the French people want.

1/2
>>
Still, on the way over the channel, you're inspected by a pair of brand new Rafale fighters, then directed into the air over upper Normandy. Once there, your escorts peel off- directed somewhere else by ground control. Rosalie's voice flits back over your headset.

“Frank, you're in what we're calling class B airspace. Ground control will leave you alone unless there's an emergency, but be sure to listen if they say something, yes? There is an english translator on hand, they've been notified who you are.”

“Thanks Rosalie.” You respond, looking down at the pastoral landscape below. Mostly farms, it looks like.

“Of course.” She says. “You may have some visitors, though. There are more than a few people who wish to claim to have flown with the eagle himself, oui?” She laughs.

“Oh, so that's what they're calling me now?” You ask, leveling out at fifteen thousand feet.

She laughs again. “They have many names for you, that one seems to be the most common, though. Jean-Luc insists upon calling you la morte blanche, but I disagree with that. If anything, you are the silver death, non?”

“Or something.” You agree.

“I will leave you to your flight, Frank.” She says, after a second. “If you need me, contact ground control, I will be available.”

“Thanks, Rosalie.”

“S-So what are we going to do over Normandy, Frank?” Merlin asks.

“Everything we couldn't over Britain.” You say with a grin.

[x] Let's test out our jets, first. See how they develop power and how fast they can push us in level flight.

“Alright, let's test these new engines of yours, Merlin.” You say, settling yourself back in your seat a bit.

“O-ok. And Frank? T-they don't get more demanding when you need to use mil power. You don't have to warn me when you speed us up.” She says.

“Ok, got it.” You say, nodding, then blinking. “Wait, was that a thing?”

“Y-yeah. It was one of the problems with the earlier hybrids.” She says.

“I think we're going to have to talk about this on the ground.” You say, laughing. “Let's try these out.”

You're hesitant to just shove the throttles forward to the stops, and you opt for advancing it more slowly, noting that the response is excellent and linear- just as you'd expect- and that you're approaching the speed of sound easily at even a fairly low setting.

The wyvern shudders as it changes configuration automatically, the wings folding in and the tailerons folding down, streamlining it down for high speed flight.

>>
You easily punch through the sound barrier, noting that the wyvern, which is usually a bit of a handful, especially at speeds, is more tame, requiring less effort on keeping it straight and level. Improvements to the flight computer, most likely, you think, keeping one eye on the airspeed indicator.

“So what should we top out at?” You ask Merlin, almost conversationally, making a gentle turn to try and maintain airspeed while setting yourself up for a return run down the air you just covered.

“Um... W-well, it should be around mach two point nine.” Merlin says. “I think. K-kenji and I did the math on it, a-and sent it in, but we're not sure it was right. Mister Wold thinks we were estimating a bit low, and we should top out a-around mach three point two.”

You whistle. “That's.... wow. Really?”

“W-well, he thinks so. We're not as s-sure. The wyvern was never m-meant for speed like that, b-but we think if it can go that fast, it c-can handle it.”

The only female pilot of the Yellow Squadron, Yellow 4 has been known to be the wingman of Yellow 13. Yellow 13 and Yellow 4 are believed to be friends since childhood and that Yellow 13 taught her the skills for flying.

[x] “Let's not test our luck.”

“Well, let's not test our luck anyway.” You say, glancing at your airspeed indicator again and noting you're already at mach 2.6 and still climbing- even though you just now cracked into the afterburner range.

“T-that's probably a good idea.” Merlin says. “We're ok r-right now, but we s-should probably save the crazy stuff for later.”

“Sounds like a plan, kiddo.”

Still, you let the fighter creep up right on the mach 2.9 mark, noting that the fighter would still be accelerating if you hadn't dropped the throttles back to cruise and done a few slow S-turns to bleed some speed.

Dropping back down below mach, you start a turn to the north, adopting a track that, if you hold it, will take you out over Dieppe and the English channel.

“So how are we looking?” You ask merlin, noting that everything, according to your instruments, looks fine.

“We're good.” She says, sounding pleased. “N-no problems, not even minor ones. H-hey Frank, bogies at our eleven low, headed three two zero. Witches.”

“Oho?” You ask, looking up and out- sure enough, Merlin’s sensors have picked them up- though you're not sure they know it. A second later, Merlin starts working her magic, and their airspeed, altitude, and relative heading are all given- they're at angels ten and maintaining a cruising speed. If they've seen you, they're not acting like it- or they simply don't care. Hard to tell.

“A-are we going to do anything?” Merlin asks. “I-I'm not sure it would be a good idea, but it might be the best way to give the fighter a good workout. She's anxious to really get off the l-leash.”

She pauses. “And I w-wonder where she learned t-to say that. That's t-too lewd.”

Merlin told us that the plane told us to do it.

I mean, honestly, yeah, Ghost could fuck us real good with this option, but hopefully, he won't, especially since I'm pretty sure most of us in the "let's do it" camp just want to just cut loose a little and have some fun after all this tight-laced "let's be serious shit". What have we done so far, really? We did a couple high speed laps over Normandy. That's pretty dull. The plane wants a little action, we want a little action, let's have some fun.

And teach witches a valuable lesson about flying in an airspace without clear IFF, even a friendly sky.

Would be nice to keep our promise to Slider and not piss her off. She acts tough, but we said we would take it easy.

She was so worried that she slipped up when we teased her about standing in as our "girlfriend".

All that aside, let's not make it easy for bad things to happen, and get Merlin taken away from us. We need things to go well while we are under scrutiny.

Maybe some thing relatively minor but punctuated to show that the atmosphere has changed and be poignant and shit but permanent srs bzns trouble is counter productive, and would be overblown.

Yup. If things get screwed up, Merlin will likely get taken from us, regardless of what Nixon and Ice do. That would destroy Merlin.

We could also get yanked from the squadron so the matrons can examine us in all sorts of boring ways that have nothing to do with flying, and we really, really, really don't want that.

We are under HEAVY scrutiny until we are not stationed at Barin. It's why all the matrons and witches are coming to see us, after all. There's really nowhere to hide.

I guar-ran-fucking-tee it that every time we go up we're being watched by every pair of eyes/radar set/chase plane they can find, even if the stealth and speed means they can't get much.

And even then, they're going to pull our Black Box as soon as we touch down. If they don't know about it now, they will immediately afterwards. Unless you think tampering with a black box to alter the data is a good idea.

Yeah? Actually wouldn't us acting like a perfectly normal pilot and buzzing a couple of witches make them less interested in us.

We don't have to become the god of the sky to bounce witches. And I think I'd be very disappointed in Ghost if we go full IMPOSSIBLE FLYING just to prank some witches, assuming that option does come out ahead. We're cutting loose a little, having some fun. It's a psychological outlet to all the pressure we're under on a daily basis. We have to do something to relax and have some fun, or we're gonna crack at a bad time.

That's "you're" and just because it could go horribly wrong, (even though it probably shouldn't) is no reason to discard it completely out right.

If we never tried anything even if it had a slight chance of risk, this quest would have ended before it began, because we never would have gone though the Navy Aviation training. Let alone done ANY of the shit we've done in the past, good and bad ideas.

No, because it gives them an excuse to take Merlin away from the idiot pilot who does things like bouncing pranks.

We don't need to give them more reasons to separate us from the squadron or each other. I think it was mentioned they already wanted to take Merlin (and maybe us?) from the squadron previously.

We're under intense scrutiny on this one though. On a experimental plane!

Here's the thing, mate. That? That's not perfectly normal. It's rare. PILOTS DON'T DO THAT NORMALLY. The only pilots Frank has "bounced" have been members of his own squadron. He's never done it to sparkles just flying around.

And Young? Don't you remember the second thread? Frank Luke decked us and shook the shit out of us for just *suspecting us* of doing it. He even said it thusly: "Bounce the Navy, bounce the Limeys, Bounce the fucking MARTIANS once in a while, like you're supposed too, you layabout FUCK, but for FUCKS SAKE, never, ever, EVER bounce a WITCH!" The Major punctuates each statement with a vigorous shake that rattles your brain around your skull quite nicely. "It's a political landmine, and when all that shit comes back to earth, guess who's fucking desk it lands on!?"

The pilots /tg/ plays are the aberrations. They are by NO means the norm. Don't assume they are.

[x] “I promised Slider to dial back on the crazy, we'll let them go.”

You sigh, looking down at the two specks in the distance. You've got height, airspeed, and the element of surprise... and you promised Slider you'd behave, at least for now.

Still, just because you promised her you'd behave doesn't mean you can't have a little fun. You slowly start to accelerate, working to keep the few, scattered clouds between them and you. Merlin's sensor- which doesn't have a name yet, and really needs one- is indispensable for this kind of work, allowing you to track both of them, even through the clouds, without any trouble at all.

“F-frank what are we- uwah!” Merlin gets out, before you flip the fighter inverted in a vicious snap roll and begin to drop from the sky, keeping one eye glued to the airspeed indicator and the other to the altimeter.

You begin to arrest the descent about a thousand feet above the witches- how they can't hear you is beyond all belief. Must be preoccupied, you think, thanking your patron saint, whoever that it, for small favors.

Finally, you realize you can't get much closer than you already are- you're already probably pushing it with just a few hundred yards of separation between yourself and the two of them. You switch your radio set to an outbound, clear frequency, noting that the striker's identifying marks make them out as a pair of Americans.

“I see London,” you begin, trying not to laugh. “I see France. I see witchy underpants.”

Both of the witches look around- it doesn't take them long to spot you, their eyes both going wide in shock. “How-who-what?” One gets out, rapid fire, the surprise still firmly rooted in her brain.

“Ladies, you know, you really shouldn't be alone out here.” You say, rolling back over and climbing away. “You never know what could happen.”

“Who the hell do you think you are?” One demands- her accent marking her as being from the west coast. “What the hell do you think you're doing?”

“Marissa I think-” the other says- over their squadron frequency you look up into the mirror on the canopy frame in time to catch Merlin's eye- she smiles and shrugs.

“Not now.” The first witch- Marissa- says. “So who the hell are you anyway, hotshot? Who's your Commanding officer? I'm going to make damn sure he hears about this.”

“She's not real up to speed if she doesn't know who we are.” You remark to Merlin.

“S-she can only see the front of us and we're in low-speed.” Merlin says. “She might think we're in a F/A-23 or something. Maybe we should tell her?”

>>30179492

Here's the thing. If they could actually just take Merlin away, they would have done it already. They've been leaning pretty heavily, and everyone in our chain of command on the Navy side seems to be against it. And I think it's been clearly established they want to examine the both of us together now, which they're not gonna get if they pull us from duty. We'll quit, and what the fuck are they gonna do, witch black-bag us? Though maybe that hasn't been made clear to them.

Again, see above, how does the Matrons getting our wings taken help them? I mean, shit, Merlin's a minor. Magic's cool and awesome, but this is the 90s. [x] “Nah, I'll overfly and let her figure it out.”

“Nah,” You say, still over the intercom. “I'll just overfly and let her figure it out.”

You start to accelerate- neither of the witches makes any move to match you, until they figure out you're closing, then both of them speed up as well. Still, your enhanced turbofans generate thrust on a whole different level than even the best strikers- despite their advantage in acceleration due to that phenomenal power to weight ratio, you're able to overtake them and blow by before hitting mach.

You don't hear their chatter- Merlin stopped monitoring their radio channel almost as soon as you started pushing the throttles forward- but you can see the two of them talking as you climb out. This low altitude shit is fine for witches, but it plays merry hell with your fuel consumption, and your high speed trials didn't exactly help. You're not critically low, not yet, but it's getting time to head back. Those few hours tooling around the air near Barin didn't help, either, but then again, in a more conventional fighter, you'd be way low on fuel right now.

You note that the witches are trailing behind you a few dozen miles- but they're more or less matching your heading. You suppose you shouldn't be surprised at that- though the addition of a Marissa will put the 'issa' count on the base at danger high levels.

1/2
>>
Barin's runway proves to be a bit of a hairy proposition, though. It's narrow and too short- you have to come in a lot slower than you're comfortable with, and you try to line up way out- you don't want to land on this thing even slightly off center. Fortunately, you're able to pull it off without too much of a hitch- your fighter touching down almost exactly centered on the runway. You quickly deploy the braking chute and chop the engines to idle, deploying the air brakes at the same time. It's a harsher deceleration than you'd like, but it works, allowing you to taxi into your designated spot on the tarmac easily.

Merlin takes care of the housekeeping- manually setting the wings and tails to their folded, high-speed configuration and shutting down her end of the bird- yours is mostly already done by the time you're on the ground, honestly. You have some tasks, of course, but for the most part, all you do is double check Merlin's work- which never needs done anyway- and hit the canopy release.

2/3 (oops, spacing. again. sorry)
>>
Down on the pavement below, Kenji waits next to Slider. You almost wonder what they were talking about- though you do get a good look at how Kenji looks up at Merlin when you hit the canopy release. He's reserved enough to not break into a full smile, but you can see it. Maybe the kid actually will be good for her?

Following tradition, you're down first, and help Merlin off the ladder. She gives you a quick hug before giving a far longer one to Kenji. “A-are we done f-for the day, Frank?”

You shrug and look over at Slider, who nods. “As far as I know, you're done for today.” She says.

You watch the two of them walk off- holding hands! You're about to say something- maybe a bit mean spirited, when Slider kisses you on the cheek. “That's for keeping your promise. Thanks Frank.” She says.

“That's a bit out of character.” You say, trying to keep your brain from going into a terminal spin.

She shrugs. “I'm full of surprises.”

Oh, really? You wonder at that.

Sometimes it feels like there's no one in this state who even knows what the Internet is beyond Wikipedia. Sentiment echoed.
>>
>>30182354
No feels today. Sorry!
>>
>>30183349

That's cold. Real cold, man.

I mean, uh, how could you? Worst writefag 2014
>>
>>30183531
Yeah, I was playing WALB with the boys, and got distracted from the thread. I'd have responded earlier!
>>
>>30183555
I was kidding. I was honestly watching anime anyways, just had the thread open
>>
>>30183555
Aw man I missed opportunities for Wargame?
>>
>>30183555
>>30183608
Also, is Wargame that good? I've seen it mentioned occasionally, but have yet to avail myself of the opportunity to purchase it
>>
>>30183638

Depends on who you ask.
>>
>>30183608
Yeah just a quick comp stomp. I am TURRIBLE at playing against players.

>>30183638
Wargame's fun. It has pretenses towards REALISM, but it's definitely balanced more towards fun than realism.

Also, according to WALB, the USMC flew the F-14 Tomcat, and therefore Ghost says the game is shit (in addition to having a turrible campaign and cheating AI). I'm just tickled that the developers have left that in for as long as they have.
>>
>>30183724

No, no. the F-14 i'm fine with. I'm pissed at the cheating ass AI and shittastical campaign.

SADF > Angola

If you like Real-Time Strategy/Tactics, you'll probably like this game. It's all about massive, large scale combat of regiment vs regiment, division vs division, or even front vs front.

My computer can't handle andything bigger than 3v3, and it gets MUCH bigger than that.

>>30183811
Oh man, I have two 780s in my machine, and it was screaming for mercy on a 10 v 10 server.
>>
>>30183811
>>30183724
doesn't it have something to do with like...cards or something?
>>
>>30183867
It's a deckbuilding RTS. You have a "deck" of unit cards, which translate to various numbers and qualities of units in the actual game, which is an RTS based around supply points. No base-building.

I just gotta say, Bradleys fucking rape face in WALB. The M3A1s in particular take down 10+ guys in a game, with some particularly badass ones getting almost 30.
>>
>>30183926
>no base building
FUCKING
SOLD

There are some RTS games where the base building ain't bad...even fun, but there are many others where it's a fucking nightmare
>>
>>30183959
Yeah, the closest you get to base building is positioning any FOBs you have which acts as a resupply point for your troops.
>>
>>30183975
Heh, now I feel pretty stupid for not taking advantage of that sale earlier this week...or was it last week?
>>
>>30183936
I have a US Army Mechdeck which is nearly entirely Bradleys

Eat TOW, commie scum!

Really like doing games where we set limits on ourselves, though. Screenshot was the aftermath of an "African Rebels" game, where we used units that would be available to Small African Nations.
>>
>>30184214
I've only really started getting into the game, but now I'm starting to get curious of stuff outside of my usual US only comfort zone. I wanna try a West German deck next. The sheer variety of units in the game is very condusive to experimentation.
