You are Flying officer Julian Reber of the Royal Air Force. You are currently engaged in battle against the BETA, aliens who threaten to exterminate humanity. You've scored several rare victories for humanity and another one is imminent, should you survive the current battle. Nearly a hundred thousand aliens are charging the European Union's new forward operating base in Calais and while you were able to fend off their vanguard, that was only a fraction of their numbers. Your only advantage is that their formation is so massive that they must come at you in waves, rather than a single mass.

The base's defenses - outer walls made of laser-resistant material, entrenched gun positions, infantry, mechanized infantry, Tactical Surface Fighters and naval support - but you know they will likely prove inadequate. However, all your work so far will amount to nothing if the base falls now. You have no choice but to hold it.

"Arthur squadron, this is Arthur Crown." Knight appears in your retinal display, along with a satellite image of the incoming BETA swarm. "You've defeated the first wave of Destroyers, and the remaining pockets of Destroyers are too disorganized to form a single front. They'll be coming at you eventually, but your next contacts will be Grapplers and Tanks. I'll keep you updated as necessary. Good luck."

You have enough bullets to last a while, but you only have enough fuel to make one pass at the enemy. You can take up one of the defensive positions, or you can jump into the formation of Tanks and Grapplers and do as much damage as you can. You can also pull back from the next engagement to refuel on-site, or return to Dover. Staying here will allow you to intervene if something goes horribly wrong, but the Calais base has fairly limited supplies. Going back to Dover will take you completely out of the next fight, but you'll be able to resupply at Calais later on.

You don't want to ditch the fight yet, but you don't want to risk getting surrounded or blown up by the Royal Navy's artillery support. You look around a spot a position behind the outer wall that isn't occupied. There are a few murder-holes for your assault cannons and your Tornado's scanners should let you aim. Not that you'll need to aim, given the number of targets.

"Elaine, let's turn this into a siege defense," you say.

"Sounds good to me. We'll still need to refuel and reload afterwards though, but I guess every little bit of fuel we can save will help in the long run."

You both take position side by side and stick the muzzles of your cannons out of the murder holes. The other members of Arthur squadron take up positions all over the base, as does Lancelot squadron.

You all unleash an indiscriminate hell upon the charging BETA. Without the Destroyers at the front, there's nothing to protect the aliens from your bullets; Grappler claws are tough, but they don't make very good shields. A few BETAs penetrate your defenses, but Gawain squadron enters the fray to intercept them. You ignore the leaks and focus on the aliens who are still coming at you.

It's the Royal Navy that does most of the damage. They don't have to worry about friendly fire and they're just barely able to aim their guns low enough that Laser-class BETAs aren't able to shoot down their shots and missiles. With their support, the incoming force quickly dwindles down to nothing.

"Arthur squadron, this is Arthur Crown." Knight uploads a situation update to your HUD. You see the IFFs of the Cerberus battalion close in on the base. "Gawain squadron has reached the area of operations and the Cerberus battalion is approaching. Arthur squadron is cleared to refuel."

You switch to a satellite view of the battlefield. Another group of Destroyers is charging at you, but then the Forts get in their way, throwing their movements into chaos. They'll reach the base soon, but they should be easy to deal with. The Grapplers and Tanks are coming, but your comrades should be able to hold it together long enough for you to head to Dover and back. You really need the fuel.

You hail Group captain Hall.

"It looks like we're all running low on fuel. We should head back to Dover."

"Yeah, things should be fine here for a while and we've been up too long." Hall turns his Tornado away towards Dover and the rest of Arthur squadron follows after him. "Arthur squadron, get back to Dover to refuel and rearm and get some of those energy drink the mess keeps around for emergencies. We've been up too long without food and I don't want anyone passing out."

The Group captain's orders are met with a resounding 'Yes, sir!' from the squadron's members and you rush back over the Strait of Dover, making sure to avoid the naval barrage that streaks past you.

Your tank is just a hair's breadth away from empty when you finally settle your Tornado down in the hangar. You power down to let the mechanics get her back and running and start looking for those energy 'drinks.' They're like a synthetic version of synthetic food, more slurry than liquid, but at least it'll suppress your hunger.

You climb down from your Tornado and decide to check the mess hall for sludge. There might be some in the hangar, but you wouldn't even know where to start looking. You see Elaine sitting against her TSF's foot, ineffectually trying to wipe the sweat from her face. The other members of Arthur squadron - and Lancelot squadron, who have also apparently joined you to resupply - have similarly found a spot to crash.

You give Elaine a shout to catch her attention.

"I'm going to look for sludge at the mess," you say. "I'll see if I can bring you some."

Elaine gives you a tired nod and wave and you rush out of the hangar, careful to avoid the mechanics rushing around. You've only just stepped outside when you see Knight run towards you, hauling a large box. She's obviously out of breath, and you quickly walk towards her to grab her package.

"Let me take that for you," you say.

Knight nods in appreciation and hands you the box, which happens to be filled with bottles of orange sludge. Judging by the way Knight is gasping for breath, she must have been in a rush to get it to you.

"Thanks for the sludge. Are you going be all right?"

"I'm fine." She takes a moment to get her breath back. She doesn't succeed, but she can at least make it look like it doesn't bother her. "I need to get back to CIC. The infantry... the TSFs were too focused on the bigger targets, so the smaller strains got through, I need to get back."

"Sure," you say. "Just be careful on your way back."

"Of course. I'll be on the comms by the time you fly back out. Just... be careful. Both you and Robinson."

You see Knight off and bring your disgusting, semi-solid, semi-liquid prize to Arthur squadron. None of them look particularly pleased to see you return, but whatever it takes to get back in the fight...

"Knight says to be careful," you tell Elaine.

She just snorts in response.

"Being careful never did us any favours."

"It might. Eventually."

It doesn't take much longer for the mechanics to be done with your TSFs and you climb back into the cockpit. The satellite image of the battle shows a massacre. Much of the base is overrun by Soldiers and Warriors, but it looks like the European infantry has gotten its shit back together and the TSFs appear to be all fine. The image is filled with BETA corpses.

Time to decide how to get back into the fight.

You take a look at the battlefield. The Tanks and Grapplers are being heavily suppressed, and the Forts and Destroyers are ineffective for the moment. The major problem is the Infantry, but there's not much you can do about them. The soldiers will just have to handle it as best they can.

You also notice a small pocket of Laser-classes with a convenient blind spot you could exploit...

"Elaine, feel like going on another laserjagd?"

"Another medal would cheer me up," she says. "And if there's another party, I'll be able to grope you again."

"You're still going on about that?"

Elaine smiles at you kindly - and oddly, given the situation - through your visual connection.

"I get my hands on something nice every time I try," she says. "Anyway, let me check with Hall."

You keep a steady course towards Calais and wait for Hall's orders. It doesn't take him long to make up his mind.

"Arthur squadron, this is Arthur 1. Follow Arthur 2 and 3. We're going hunting for Lasers."

His order is once again acknowledged with a resounding 'Yes, sir!' and you push your engines as far as they can go, swinging around the main battle and towards the Lasers you saw earlier.

The entire squadron comes out of the blind spot guns blazing, but it's you and Elaine who deal most of the damage. Elaine even manages to grab one of them live and use it as a BETA shield. However, you've eliminated less than a score of Lasers; there are almost two thousand left, scattered all over the battlefield.

Now that your here, you might as well finish the job. Besides, it doesn't look like you could stop Elaine even if you wanted to. Holding on to her hostage, she rushes into the battle, ignoring all other BETAs to focus exclusively on the Lasers. You follow, along with the rest of Arthur squadron, and assault the pockets of Lasers.

What follows is a one-sided domination. Ignorant of proper tactics, the Lasers ended up manoeuvring themselves into the absolute worst positions imaginable. It's trivial work for your squadron to move from cover to cover or use other BETAs to counter the Lasers. You slaughter everything that stands in your way and once you realize you've run out of targets, Knight makes a cheerful announcement over the comms.

"Arthur squadron, this is Arthur squadron. The Lasers have been eliminated. You now have air superiority. Repeat, you now have air superiority."

"Knight, I need more details on the current situation," you say.

"Give me a minute." She briefly looks over her screens and checks with someone behind her. "It looks like the Destroyers are mostly out, and the Tanks are on their last legs. However, there are still a few hundred Forts left and the base is still swarming with Warriors and Soldiers."

You have air superiority and your artillery support is clear. You can help mop up the Forts and Tanks, or you can assist the infantry.

The elimination of the Lasers has made your choice a lot simpler. Artillery rains down on the Tanks and Forts and, combined with the firepower of the remaining TSF pilots, completely erases the Tanks and Forts. That just leaves the Warriors and Soldiers to deal with.

"Arthur squadron, this is Arthur 1. Move in to support the ground infantry. Pick your targets carefully."

You fly back to the Calais base, unfettered by the threat of Laser fire, but the altitude isn't doing you any favours in this situation. You need to get closer to make sure you don't hit any friendlies, so you relax your engine and drop your Tornado on the nearest BETA platoon, crushing it flat under the weight of your TSF. You line up your shots carefully, but the ground infantry is entrenched in obvious fortifications, so they're not hard to miss. Arthur squadrons proceeds to purge Calais base. Your assault cannons quickly run out of ammunitions, so you take out your axes. The BETA paw and your TSF, but they only just barely manage to scratch the paint job.

Once again, you've been up for far longer than a day and you're only functional because of stimulants, but this was a good day for you. Arthur squadron hasn't lost anyone and casualties in general are light. The ground infantry hasn't fared nearly as well, but they're better off than they would have been without your support.

"Arthur squadron, this is Arthur 1. We're returning to base. Gawain will maintain watch here."

For a moment, you were afraid that you were going to have to stay here even longer, but it looks like you finally caught a lucky break. You fly back to Dover, leaving behind a complete mess that you're very, very glad you won't have to clean up. You have no idea how they managed to clear out the BETA corpses out when you took Calais, but now they'll have to do it with twice the effort.

You're dead tired, but you don't want to go to bed on an empty stomach, and you'd rather not skip a meal. At the very least, you should grab some toast and a cup of tea.

The hangar is a mess when you get back, but it's an organized mess. The TSFs that have suffered significant battle damage are getting immediate attention, the back-up mechanic crews are moving from one job to another and all the equipment has been sorted out. It seems Wright has gotten things back on track here.

In fact, Wright is waiting for you and Elaine by your TSFs. She smiles as she sees you and pulls you into a hug.

"Welcome back," she says, "and thank you for bringing your Tornadoes back mostly intact."

Then she kisses you - both of you - on the cheek, lingering a bit too long for it to come off as just a friendly gesture.

"Always my pleasure to come back alive," Elaine says, stifling a yawn.

"I'm going to get breakfast," you say. "Would you both care to join me?"

"Certainly," Wright says. "I was just about to have dinner. Or breakfast. It seems we're all on odd schedules."

"I might as well go along," Elaine says. Then she leans on you for support. "I'm too tired to walk on my own anyway."

"Come on, this isn't as bad as the Hive infiltration," you say.

"It sure has hell feels like it." Elaine pauses for the moment. "Although we're probably not getting framed for gross incompetence this time, so that's a plus."

You lead Elaine back to the locker room so you can both shower and get changed. You're both tired, but at least you're not completely worn out.

When you reach the mess, you find Knight waiting for you at a table.

"Oh, yes, please," Elaine says. "I'm barely awake enough to walk."

"Sure, go ahead. I'll look after Elaine and Wright in case they fall asleep. Can you handle breakfast for four on your own?"

"It's fine," Knight says. "I'll just grab something light."

"I don't need you looking after me, Julian," Elaine says. "No wait. Yes, I do. Nevermind. Just wake me up when Knight comes back."

The three of you sit at the table and Elaine rests her head on your shoulder and falls asleep almost immediately. You put one arm around her to keep her from falling asleep and hitting her head against the table. To your left, Wright pokes your cheek softly and fakes a cute pout.

"You shouldn't flirt in public, you know," she says. "People might get jealous."

>"Fine, you can sleep on my shoulder for the two minutes it'll take for Knight to get back."
>"I did promise to let you sit on my lap, didn't I?"
>"I know how thick this makes me sound, but why do you keep flirting with me? And Elaine? And possibly everyone?"

"Fine, you can sleep on my shoulder for the two minutes it'll take for Knight to get back."

"Why, thank you," she says.

Wright snuggles against you and wraps her arms around your neck for support. She rests her head against your shoulder and closes her eyes to rest, smiling contentedly. You support her with your spare arm and wonder whether you should let her rest or not, but something's bothering you.

"I know how thick this makes me sound, but why do you keep flirting with me? And Elaine? And possibly everyone?"

You immediately feel Wright tense up and her smile wavers for a moment. She shifts her head away from you ever so slightly.

"It's just you," she says. "And Robinson. And Knight, sometimes. I don't see her often enough."

"Are you going to tell me why?"

"Loneliness, I suppose," she says. "There are certain... issues I need to deal with. Things I can't talk about to anyone. Things I don't even want to think about unless I have to. After your first mission, the things you did during the laserjagd... I thought you might be someone I could talk to about it. Someone who could help me show the world that miracles aren't necessary, that humans can fight back against the BETA. Robinson and Knight support you, so I thought I could rely on them, too."

She slides away from you, but she doesn't look at you.

"I'm sorry, if I've bothered you," she says.

>"It's fine, Mary."
>"It's fine, Wright."
>"It's just... awkward."

>Mary Wright has unlocked Computer.

"It's fine, Mary," you say. "I know what it's like to feel alone out here."

It's not like you can talk to anyone about all those little errands you did for MI5. Most of the time, it doesn't bother, but the little things add up sometimes.

"I..." Mary looks at you and smiles. "Thank you, Julian. I think I needed that more than the flirting."

Knight returns with two armfuls of toast that may or may not be made of real bread, but that are at least close enough to the real thing. You gently shake Elaine awake and she thanks you with a punch to the kidney. Fortunately, she doesn't have the angle to really get into you, so it's not too painful.

The four of you start eating and talk about the current state of things.

"People still aren't happy about how the Hive infiltration turned out, but it looks like they're starting to act normal again," Knight says.

"It won't be pleasant, but it'll blow over," you say. "How long do you think it'll take before we can get some real work done on the components we recovered?"

"It should be starting soon," Mary says. "It looks like we'll need to plug them directly to a nuclear reactor to try and jumpstart them, so there's a lot of paperwork to get through."

"That sounds incredibly stupid and dangerous," Elaine says.

Mary merely shrugs.

"It's not any more stupid or dangerous than what you pilots usually deal with," she says.

You really can't argue with that.

You finish eating and stay behind a bit to give Elaine and Knight some privacy. When you reach your room, you find the two of them sleeping together in Elaine's bed. They couldn't have been there for more than a few minutes, but the sheets are already spilling over the floor. You cover them up again and slip into your own bed.

Your battle against a hundred thousand BETAs ends like just any other day.
