It is the year 22XX and Humanity has reached the stars. Alas, even though they have attained the lofty goal of interstellar travel, mankind has yet to conquer it’s baser instincts.

Humanity is ruled by ultra-Corporations. Some own continents. Some own multiple worlds. But no matter who you are, everyone is a citizen-employee somewhere. The qualms that beset corporations of the past, copyright infringement, tech theft, still exist. If anything, they are amplified by the scale of the players.

Without government to turn to for legal recourse and separated by millions and billions of miles, corporations have turned to less savory solutions to resolve disputes. You are one of those solutions.

You are an elite mercenary, also known as a High Impact Public Representative, of the StrikeOut Company, a group of mercenaries who accept contracts and missions from the highest bidder. You are launched out of a spaceship in a drop pod filled with bright orange and highly toxic gel. You crash land into the target’s facilities, make a mess, do your job, and then get the hell out.

You are a Fall Guy. You are a Deniable Asset.

Yep.

A few steadying breaths. You begin to walk forward, towards the reactor room. Dr. Tran falls in behind you, scanning the hallway leading back to the lift with his rifle. You stop at the intersection of your hallway and the larger corridor, glancing around the corner. Nothing that you can see.

“Clear,” you mutter.

The two of you press on, walking towards the reactor room. Your heart is beating faster. You know what it dreads. The last hallway. What is down the last hallway? AS you draw closer to it, you press yourself against the wall, shuffling your armored feet along, hoping to make less noise.

Still. The echoes. You stop at the corner. And you glance down the hallway.

Nothing.

Sighing in relief, you unglue yourself from the wall and take a step forward.

Something.

Movement. You point your revolver down the hallway, finger on the trigger.

Something shifts in the distance. You activate your headbeams.

A body. A body is sitting up against the wall. You and Dr. Tran walk up to it, eyeing it carefully. You can see the brown surrounding it in a dry pool. As you get closer, it’s easy to see what happened. Neck. Ripped open.

Dr. Tran hurries forward and turns the head to get a better look at the injury. The dead man’s eyes stare up into your own. They are wide. Surprised. His mouth turned down in a grimace of shock. You shudder, and step outside of the dead man’s field of vision. After a few seconds, Dr. Tran stands up.
>>
“Teeth.”

“What sort?”

“I only know the dentition of one species on this world.”

“Fuck.”

Dr. Tran pats down the corpse before coming up empty handed. The two of you quickly back away from the body, unwilling to linger in the hallway so close to the Gene Therapy center. As you pull back, you swear you can hear more footsteps than there are people. Only a few seconds and the pair of you are both sprinting to the Reactor Room. You stumble into it, panting, and not from exertion. Dr. Tran takes up position near the entry door, scanning the hall with his rifle.

You take a few steps forward, and survey the room.

Welp, the green lights make it pretty damned clear the Fiss/Fuse plant is up and running. Grunting, you walk over the the electricity control panel. A bag. A bag lies next to the seat in front of the control panel. You lift it up. Unactivated glowstrips fall out. And another tablet. You reach down to grab the tablet. That’s when you notice something odd about the glowstrips.

Some of them are smeared with brown.

You look again at the bag in your hand. A hint of forest green peeks out from behind the… Brown.

You drop the bag. “Shit.”

Gotta focus. You have a job here. Restore power. You need to do that first and foremost. You place the tablet on the panel as you contemplate it.

Wiring damage. Power cut off to the rest of the clinic to avoid overloading the… lights. Shaking your head, you begin to override unnecessary safety protocols. You’d take an operational computer system, security system, and doors at the risk of blowing out all of the lights any day.

You are about to call out to Dr. Tran when there is a loud noise.

Shots.

I think the votes are leaning towards joining the good doctor and ascertaining what is happening. Perhaps join in on the fun if an eight armed space mutant is wandering down the hallway.

Writing.

Also, I remember Angelic doing this when they proxy QM'd for me, and it seemed like a pretty good idea.

What are your thoughts on the mission right now? What do you think the monster of the week is, or is there one at all? Whom do you think is responsible for the current situation?
>>
>>30221155
We are probably dealing with regular people with genetic augmentations infected with something that is messing with their head.

I imagine that the indigenous genius cooked up something nasty to mess up with the personel.
>>
>>30221155
Your thoughts would be correct sir.
Eight armed mutants are such assholes.
Never have any respect for lonely miners who just want to turn the damn lights on.

>Mission
It smells bad. In the sense that I feel like we're not getting quite the whole story here. Which is obvious, but I mean-some bad shit with genetic engineering

>Threats
Personally, I am thinking mutated super humans. Not quite super soldiers or anything. The bites on the guy's neck make me suspect this further.

>Situation
I hate splitting up in situations like this. We need to hurry and reunite.
>>
>>30221155
Obviously we are dealing with the local population after getting some enhancements while they are hopped up on the space marijuana needles.

God damned pinko space commie-hippies.
>>
>>30221155
Mission is fine, I like the change in atmosphere and the fact that we were kinda forced to go for the objective gave it a more professional, no-nonsense feel.

Enemies are probably the pro augs and clinic personnel on a bad trip after being exposed to an extra funky strain of Mars hippie blend. Maybe combined with some experimental gene modification. I'm thinking the bad guys are the purist colonists and the fact they're from Mars is meant to shed another light on why Marlena has trigger happy issues.
>>
>>30221329
Wait, shit I had a thought.
What if shit went full on Bioshock? The people couldn't handle the unique enhancements and just went all nutzo'
>>

What is the deal with Mars, anyway? All I remember is it was full of rebellious punks who were all about purity and weed or some shit.
>>
>>30221155
I'm pretty stoked on this mission, want to find out all the secrets, kill all the monsters, get the best grades, save the most people.

For the monster, I hoping for a deranged humanoid so, we can't kill it without breaking our odrers, so we are just trying to evade and not get our throat ripped out.

I want to blame the crazy Martians, but I think the intern did it.

You swear under your breath and pull the Model 223 out of your holster. Dr. Tran might be a stick in the mud, but he doesn’t seem like the sort with a twitchy trigger finger. If anyone is, it might be you. You run up to the corridor entrance, standing with your back pressed against the opposite wall. The bursts from Dr. Tran’s gun saturate the hallway with brilliant white light, making it hard to see. Eventually he stops firing, ejecting the empty magazine. “Clear,” he shouts, voice shaky over the comm link.

The two of you walk forward cautiously. Now that Dr. Tran isn’t firing any more you can see somewhat clearly in the half light of the corridor, dying glowstrips shining down onto the floor. A small body. Long hair, but thin, very thin. Like someone pulled out three quarters of them at random. You shuffle forward, revolver pointed down at the figure on the ground.

“Medical gown.”

Dr. Tran nods. “Cover me, Kostov. I have the means to make a better assessment than you.”

You swallow and tighten your grip on the… well grip. Dr. Tran shuffles forward and kneels next to the body. With deliberate care, the Doctor places his hands underneath the shoulders of the body and turns it over.

“Thang cho de.”
>>
I recommend as soon as we get contact, reporting the fuck out of it to squad leader and ship becomes high priority.
>>
You take a few steps forward and suppress a horrified profanity. You think that whatever is lying on the floor was a girl. You think. The skin is grey and taut, stretched over a face that… fuck. No girl has a face like that. It’s weirdly twisted and elongated, jawline and cheekbones livid against the flesh. The eyes are large, like the eyes of some sort of clammy cave creature. Wide and white and blind.

But that isn’t the worst of it. Her face. Her mouth, contorted into a rictus of insane pleasure. While the rest of her body went slack after being shot, the leer remains, baring small white teeth.

Dr. Tran stands up, away from the corpse as quickly as possible. “I found something,” he dangles a silver chain in the air, identity chit swaying at the end. It looks like a little bird. You extend your hand and hold it up to your helmet’s reader.

>Valla Treegreen
>Age 8
>HoriZone Citizen-Employee by proxy of her Mother and Father, Darla and Barney Treegreen

You lack the authority to access any more information. You look up at Dr. Tran, shaking your head. “HoriZone’s. Nothing else.”

Dr. Tran nods. “We need power STAT. I may be able t-”

Mars is the only Co-Op corporation in Human Space. I would compare their existence to a nation where everyone conforms to a pseudo- Hippie/New Age lifestyle, which is rigorously enforced by a North Korean/Stalinist government.

It wasn’t a matter of not seeing what was happening. It was a matter of being too startled to react. One second, Dr. Tran is talking about medical records (you presume), the next, her face, cloaked in steam.

You get it now. That horrifying grin. That was her mouth relaxed.

Now it’s open, a maw of exaggerated canines and incisors. The jaw is opening wide. Long past the point when it should have stopped. You can almost hear the rip as the skin of her cheeks tears open and back. Jaw muscles writhe and squirm like fat worms.

Some part of your brain, obviously not the part that is in charge of priorities, shuts down Dr. Tran’s comm link.

Valla Treegreen’s teeth sink deep into Dr. Tran’s neck, ripping through the environment suit like so much tissue paper. You stumble backwards, tripping over your own feet. On your ass.

Valla Treegreen locks eyes with you as she rends Dr. Tran’s throat open. “Ha. Ha. Hahahaaaaaaa…”

You raise your Model 223 and fire. The rubber headed round slams into the girl’s forehead. Her head snaps back with a crunching sound. As she falls back down you clamber up to your feet.

Steam rises off of her body and her face. You watch as her cheeks knit themselves shut.

Taking a deep breath, you scurry forward, wrist restraints in hand. Actually, a pair of wrist restraints. She didn’t use her hands to kill Tran. You bind her arms behind her back and shackle her ankles together too, drawing the restraints tight enough to cut into the grey skin. A bit of ichorous blood leaks out. You stand back, looking down at your handiwork. Valla twitches slightly. Who knows? Maybe the shot to the skull was enough to stun her. Certainly worked better than all of those rounds Tran pumped into her. Gingerly, you seize the creature by the back of the neck, where it’s damned mouth can’t reach you, and haul it back into the reactor room. Just as you are about to return to work on the electrical control panel, you notice a flashing comm request.

“Tran?”

You open the channel as you rush out into the hallway. Horrible gurgling sounds. You wince as you jog up to Tran. Poor bastard is still alive. Barely. Must be modded to prevent bleed out. As you stare down at your churlish squadmate, he gestures at a pack on his side. You open it. Out falls a collection of medical supplies, various cans of Synth-Flesh and scalpels. Tran pats the area where the supplies fell.

His hand is trembling as he lifts it up. A clear tube clutched between jittering fingers. A moment to ascertain it’s purpose. Temporary blood vessel. Something to get blood to his brain before it starves. You take the tube.

Your Model 223 is heavy in your hand.

“Fucking fuck,” you moan as you take the tube and insert it into some sort of vein. Jugular perhaps. Then a ping.

“Three?” you groan, air leaving your chest in a demoralized gasp. “Fuck.”

Finally all the jugulars are hooked back up. You roll back on your feet, sweating into your helmet.

>good. won’t die. yet. glad didn’t reach vertebral. course bigger problem then.

“Shit dude. Now what? I can’t just leave you here.”

>what going to do. 10penny feckwit.

You grunt, slightly too distraught to respond to the insult as you haul Dr. Tran back into the reactor room. Valla is twitching. More so than usual. This is all fucked. You groan as you get back to the electricity control panel. You’d like it if restoring power didn’t mean burning out all the lights, but fuck it. You wouldn’t have the time of patience to find the damage in the wiring to fix it even on the best of days. And you don’t want to be alone. Even if it is a half dead douchebag.

“Yeah you fucking on ya mate, you restored fucking power I know! Bit fucking busy though!”

“Fucking shit. You think maybe I could strp you to my back?”

>dislodge tubes. fuck yurself.

“Damnit,” you grumble as you seize Tran underneath the armpits and haul him backwards. Damnit damnit damnit. You do not want to be doing this backwards. Only option though for his precious fucking tubes. You gently place Tran down on the lift to the Gene Therapy Clinics and press the “UP” button. The lift shudders and begins its creaking ascent.

Just then a thought occurs to you. You know that Clayton and Marlena presumably are still alive, and you’re sure that they’ve met the locals. Might as well ask. You tap Clayton’s comm icon repeatedly.

“Fucking what.”

“Killing them?”

“What the fuck do you think dipshit.”

Clayton cuts off the connection. Huh. Well isn’t that something. Didn’t think he could get that mad. You raise the Model 223 and begin switching off to a decidedly more deadly payload.

You are so focused on the task at hand you fail to notice the urgent gurglings of one Dr. Tran. When you finally do, your Model 223’s chamber is popped out, not a single bullet loaded. “Kinda in the middle of so-”

You stop. You can hear it too. Scittering. Scratching.

“Oh fu-”

Something lands on the opposite side of the lift. Before you have time to raise your empty 223 to meet the new threat, another something wraps itself around your head, obscuring your vision.

You drop the 223. As Tran gurgles and splutters over your comm link, you can hear the basso thud of metal striking metal.

Your mind goes blank as you recall what a merc must do in high pressure situations like these. When a fucking mutant lands on your head. Honestly, you think Darius had more mundane things in mind when he told the rookies to “Use your head.”

You find his words of wisdom perfectly applicable in this situation as well. You begin the thrash backwards, repeatedly slamming your assailant against the wall of the lift shaft. The thing’s grip loosens, but only marginally. At least it isn’t choking you out with it’s skeletal thighs any more. You snarl and begin to smash your upper body against the shaft once more. Finally the thing screams and lets go, collapsing against the guard rails as it sags off of you. Snarling, you pull a flashbang grenade out and pull the pin.

A few seconds, and the world blossoms with light. You cover your visorwith your spare arm as your draw your tomahawk out. Shaking your head, you are satisfied by the pained screeches of the creatures as they claw at their… ears? Didn’t think the flashbang would get them like that. Shrugging, you take Tran’s observation to heart, and swing your tomahawk into the skeletal head of the creature that was assaulting Tran.

Gor splatters against the opposite wall before descending into the darkness. You turn around to face the other creature. It looks up at you with large blind eyes. The horrific maw gapes, the squirming jaw muscles slack with shock.

“Disgusting.”
>>
You stomp. And you stomp. And you continue to slam the sole of your boot against the wall, trying to purge the filthy abomination. Bones crunching as you scream out frustration, fury, and fear until all that’s left is a black-red pulp. Panting, you collapse onto your knees. This time, you have the foresight to prepare.

You rip your helmet off and vomit, liquefied donuts and coffee drip through the metal grate of the lift floor. Wiping your mouth, your crawl over to Tran.

Dead.

You figured after he failed to make a snide comment about your gastric upheaval.

“Hey… I’m sorry man,” you mumble to the corpse. “I tried, you know?”

“Talkin’ to a corpse,” you mutter, “I’m losing it. I’m fucking losing it. Mutants. Pear ass Aliens. What the fuck is wrong with me.”

And you laugh, hysterical laughter echoing in the shaft until it sounds like a demented version of the Big Bang’s laugh track. God, you hated that assignment. Thoughts of college bring you back into yourself. You swallow, and put your helmet back on.

A comm request from Marlena. You tap it open numbly.

“Kostov! We’ve locked ourselves down in one of the labs! These things, they’re fucking borderline immortal! Clayton’s been… oh by the Red Mother Clayton’s… shit.”

A red comm icon flashes in your HUD map of the clinic. You frown as you slide rounds into your Model 223. Not rubber heads. Not anymore.

“I’m coming.”

“I don’t give two shits if you’re coming rookie! Clayton needs Tran now!”

“Tran is dead,” you state simply.

You cut off the comm link. Marlena knows all that she needs to. You lower yourself down and relieve Tran of his medical pack. Clayton needs it more now. You turn it over in your hand. There is a patch on the inside flap. An anthropomorphic kitten mascot waves at you, the paper-screen stuttering with age. You close the pack and hook onto your own belt. You relieve the corpse of two more flashbangs and three fragmentation grenades. Patting down Tran, you manage to find his wallet in one of his thigh pockets. You open it and are confronted with a very strange sight. Tran is smiling. As is the little girl on his shoulders.

“Fuck me.”

You sigh and put the wallet back, entrepreneurial spirit smothered. You stand up as the lift comes to a halt. “And fuck these guys too,” you snarl as you jerk your wrist, clicking the Model 223’s cylinder into place.

You yank the pin out of a frag grenade and toss it down the hallway without even looking. The muffled boom and the chorus of screams are more than enough confirmation for its efficacy. You smirk, and pull the pin on the frashbang before sending it too down the hallway.

Nothing.

You look down at the pin in your hand. “Fuck!” you scream in fury. Snapped the pin. Didn’t pull it. Hands were shaking. Snarling, you leap out from behind the corner, glaring down the hallway. You line up the sights of you Model 223 on the nearest… thing. The creature looks up at you, eye comically large from beneath it’s sparse ginger bowlcut. You promptly miss all three shots.

“Fuck,” you roar into the hallway. One of the surviving things mewls in pain. “Fuck you too,” you snarl, as you bolt forward with your tomahawk in hand. Can’t miss from this range. Not with largely disabled targets. Your first swing actually manages to strike two heads, pulping them both into explosions of steaming pink. You gag as some horrifying meaty stench breaks through your helmet’s air scrubbers. So is this what that steam that comes off of their wounds smells like? You execute another quick downward strike, obliterating another one of the creature’s skulls with your seismic amplifier. You stumble forward across the slick hallway floor.

One left.

The creature looks up at you listlessly, black organs squelching out of the gash in it’s side. “Fuck.”

Stomp.

“You.”

Stomp.

“Asshole.”

Stomp.
>>
On the final stomp your foot slips in the ichor, and you collapse into the meaty slurry. Picking yourself up and trying not to vomit once more, you walk up to the door and knock three times. Marlena opens a comm link.

“Kostov?”

“Dead. Let me in.”

A few seconds, and the door slides open. Marlena is staring at you. You cannot see her face through the helmet. You are glad she cannot see yours either. “How’s Clayton?”

“Not fucking finished yet mate.”

You and Marlena hurry over to the downed merc. He’s not doing great. The rather nasty set of gashes along his thigh and right arm tell you that much, but he’s a damn sight better than Tran was. You quickly pull out Tran’s medical pack. “Anyone know how to use thi-”

Marlena snatches it away from you and begins to spray synth-flesh onto the wound. After a few minutes, Clayton opens up the team channel.

“Right. A plan. That’s a good thing to have. No more splitting up either.”

“We can figure out how many there are, maybe even who’s responsible for all of this shit, if the cameras got it. There’s a lot we still don’t know yet about what happened here.”

“Good. Fuck this place,” mutter Marlena.

“Yeah,” assents Clayton, “but Ivan’s right. We’re being paid to figure out what happened here. You want a failure on your mission report, Marlena?”

Marlena looks as though she’s about to say something, but her chest quickly deflates. “No.”

“Me neither. Don’t want to be here long though. Nasty buggers, the lot of them. Don’t want to think what the kids and all look like.”

You pause, but decide it has to be said. “Those are the kids.”

Marlena and Clayton both look at you. “What?”

“I took and ident chit off of one of them. She’s just like the ones out in the hallway. Valla Greentree. Age eight,” you dangle the small bird shaped identity chit in front of your fellow squaddies.

“No,” breaths Marlena.

“Yes,” you answer, inhaling. “I think everything we’ve fought so far are just kids who were going in for much needed gene therapy.”

“The adults…” Marlena whispers, “What will they be like?”

“I don’t give a rat’s ass,” mutters Clayton as he pulls himself to his feet. “We are going to the security station. We are figuring out who did this. And we are putting a bullet in their brain. Move out squad.”

And with that Clayton leads you and Marlena into the black hallways in the clinic.

That's it?

Oh boy.

Alright, and that was the last post for tonight.

Feedback, how is Operation Bitter Prophet going for you, now that things have picked up? Anything you think could be improved upon?

Also, general questions, I'll be lurking to answer them
>>

I'm loving it so far FG, although its a distinct break from established missions and action scene flow, its enjoyable nonetheless, a fun changeup for every once in a while
>>
>>30228689
Ok, Clayton is clearly too guns-no to survive this OP. Marlena's...actually, she seems likely to get genre savvy quick, so I'll give her better odds. We live by the dice or die by the dice, as always.

No way to radio for back up, not like the cavalry can get here in time.
>>
>>30228721

I like how it's going so far.

I'm also going to gleefully enjoy stuffing bullets into Logan's brain. We really need more missions like this.
>>
>>30228721
Eh, the whole horror genre's not my thing but I'm enjoying it so far. Also, did we ever restore power to this level's security station?
>>
>>30228721
Love it.

Well, the name bitter Spring was damn well appropriately named.

I still feel guilty about Tran.

I do like how Engineer we feel in this situation. People need shit fixed and we're the only guy to do it. Also on note, we should learn how to do BASIC medical stuff, I think. I don't want to be JAck of all Trades, but seriously, knowing how to use any of that medical shit is handy.

Some questions

Will we be telling Tran's little girl what happened here? I assume StrikeOut has a very formal way of informing loved ones postmortis.

Blowing the entire station seems to me like a bad idea. Is there a way for us to get into contact with the bigwigs AFTER we get the info from security? I'd like permission to do that shit, if we have to. It's pretty clear it's infested.

And finally
This was basically a mission to say sticking too close to those 'bonus parameters' is gonna get us fucked, isn't it? Because it sure as heck felt that way. Since we chose not to break it, and our team mates broke it anyway.
Not that I blame you for it, it makes sense that they'd say 'fuck the bonus', I just wanted to know if this was another 'message' as you put it.

That horrific and wonderful, thank you fall guy.
>>
>>30228755
>Ok, Clayton is clearly too guns-no to survive this OP
what does this even mean?
>>
>>30228721

What would our relationship with Tran be like if we managed to save him?

>>30228800
>>30228820
Well I'm glad to hear you think so, anons! Yes, this is quite a change of pace. I'm not sure if I'll write another mission as overtly Horror-y as this one in the near future, but it seems to be building into something more successful once we got over the tension building half

>>30228788
It isn't really my jam either. And yes, you all did. Power online for the entire station. Just not the lights.

>>30228814
1. I'm not sure about that. I'll leave it up to players votes if they want to tag along. And yes, StrikeOut does have formal procedures for an on the job death. They're coordinated by the merc's HR Adviser.

2. Clayton has a powerful comm suite. He could probably contact the bigwigs if he were outside, in the open. And there wasn't a storm causing interference.

3. The bonus parameters were attainable, but REALLY REALLY hard to get. Clayton and Marlena broke it as a way to get you guys to go guns-free, because I was getting some low roll vibes this thread. I guess that to a certain extent this was a message, that yes, in general things can go horribly wrong. Although a lot of that had to do with the horror vibe I was going for

>>30228896
Adversarial still. Tran would be cross at you for saving him. He doesn't enjoy relying on others, and you saving his life would irritate him to no end.
>>
>>30228721
Thanks for the thread FG, I'm looking forward to blowing this place up.

Whens next thread scheduled for?
>>
>>30228954
Good question. I'd like to run again on Tuesday, but I'm not sure if I'll get the chance. Keep an eye on the twitter.
>>
>>30228972
will do, also, might want to archive the thread if you haven't already

>1
Fair enough. We didn't know the guy, so I doubt his family will wanna talk to us, nor do I think the others will want to go see em.
But still. Man.

>2
So...basically a cell phone? I suppose we should try for that, after we get info. Tell them what we got, mission done, bonus to get us to blow the place up maybe? that'd be pretty sweet.

>3
Yeah...I figured. I figured we could at least TRY to do the bonus until something shitty happened. Unfortunately it meant that Tran died. Will keep in mind for low weapon grade missions in the future.

Hell, at least we have something to be upset about with Elda some time.

Also
>Tran being this tsun
I'll miss that crotchety bastard.
>>
>>30228953

So, if Tran died, can we get his share of the pay?
>>
>>30229279
Sorry anon, no. Tran's mission pay will be going directly to his family.
>>
>>30229294
fuck.

I hope he had death insurance
