Notes on Rolls and Voting:

When I request rolls, each set of three rolls counts for one action. For example, a two-step plan would take the first 6 linked rolls. A particularly bad failure can interrupt a string of actions.

When rolling 1d100, I will consider criticals within the first ten linked rolls. Only criticals that occur in the first three rolls will be counted as "supercrits". This is still the case even if you'd have plan long enough to require more than ten rolls.

When rolling 1d20, the rules are the same, but I only consider criticals for the first five rolls, rather than ten. Criticals in the first three are still "supercrits".

When a plot choice results in extensive debate, I'll try to weed out the most popular trains of thought, and then call a vote on them. When voting, please respond with only a link back to the post and the number corresponding to your opinion. Other votes are discounted, including those with dice rolls or extra spaces.

Finally, note that this is not a democracy; it is a benevolent dictatorship.

Arland Summit Summary: Goals, Objectives, and Major Characters (thanks to Sorry for helping me and the players out!):

http://pastebin.com/FsP2C5Hr
-----

Your gathered allies have arrived in Arland, a war council set to gather their combined forces to face the demons and mages of Kan-Abar.

At the moment, you have the strong support of Matthel Flint; Hemmelus, the sage; the Lord Imil Anderson; and, hopefully, Harvan Flint.

Firmly against you stand Gerald Flint, Lord Prule Waterford, and Arcturis Flint himself.

You've worked with Yi Fang, Hemmelus, and Adavan to trace the other end of Donovan's parasite, and you are now in the bowels of Dobshire, beneath the bedrock upon which the citadel sits.

What I thought was the best course of action from the last thread:
==========
I feel like the best thing we could do is ....

Confront arcturius at the castle on the way back, like we're out for a walk.
and be like
"Look king, i didn't want to say this in front of guests, but there's a really powerful curse on your son and its time we told you about it."
"The reason we're here, now, is because we've found a way to remove it safely - and I mean myself, fang, and the others that can see it."
"I suppose what i'm asking for is your blessing, since this is your land and I don't want to be a rude guests. I'd do anything for my friends, and your son is the best one I have."

And just hit him in his feelings.
==========
Other ideas:
==========
I want to discuss things with Arty first regardless, even if just to say "Yo, Flint's my bro, angels are actually evil, I still want this alliance to go down so we can stand against the demons and Ring City but I'm fucking this spell up regardless so later."
==========
Actually, we should just destroy the spell tonight, with Fang's help, and then tomorrow, tell the king that the spell was destroyed and Sandalphon will blame him when he finds out. That way the king will be forced to side with us regardless, because he will need protection from Sandalphon.

>Last time...

You flit across the room.

Your senses didn't betray you - there's a river on one side of the cavern, just exposed above the ground. You slip into it, keeping a limb on the stone to hold yourself in place. There's a firm current, but not anything you couldn't swim against.

They didn't notice you at all. Metatron stands before the mirror, his palms out.

Arcturis taps a flint on the stone. "Tonight!" His voice echoes around the room.

"He was probably sleeping," Metatron says. He glances over his shoulder, and his eyes flash red. "Moreover, there are limits even to my patience, Lord Flint. The Most High is not at your beck and call. But I sympathize with your situation, and so here I stand, calling upon him. Please control yourself."

Arcturis settles on his feet and folds his arms. Metatron turns back to the mirror.

Luckily, the exchange gives you more than enough time to Analyze the room, and its occupant. Metatron is Light - as are all the angels - and Fire. Like Lucifer, he has a strong secondary element. More interesting, though, is that metal armor, almost like a second skin. You doubt he's as quick as Lucifer, but he's probably a lot sturdier. Taking him on alone would be an extremely dangerous prospect...

The spell, itself, seems to speak to you. Eight elements. All eight. Every shade of Chaos. And then you see it - the other end of the shel'kath, embedded in the spell.

They're collecting Donovan's power to make this thing work. You can only conclude that seven other mages have already had their turn...

And you can tell that this is a summoning spell. It's THE summoning spell. But what it intends to summon...that, you can only guess at.

The mirror begins to waver.

Sandalphon's visage appears within the ivory boarders. "Metatron. I hope you - ah. The Lords Flint."

"Most High," Arcturis growls. "You lied to me."

"He is aware," Metatron says, "that you Donovan's life has been...effected...by the shel'kath."

"And?"

"And." Arcturis clenches his fists. "And?! You said he would be unharmed!"

"Is he living, and breathing?" Sandalphon says. "Has he not found love with that whore traitor?"

Metatron blinks. "Most High. Auriel - "

"Was a failure before Hyperion blessed her, and was weak-willed panderer to public opinion after he blessed her. What he saw in her I do not know, but I respected her stature because Hyperion's judgement lies above ours. But now that she has shown her true colors, we will deal with her in time." He looks at Arcturis. "What do you want from me, Lord Flint? It is late."

"We find another mage, tomorrow," Arcturis says. "I will not have my son bound by this thing any further. Or I'll join in with Archon, Sandalphon, and I swear by the elements, I am not bluffing."

"Arcturis," Sandalphon says, "we are about to summon the Lord of Light back from the Core of Chaos. Do not test me."

"I'm not testing you," Arcturis says. "I'm telling you!"

"You don't have a choice."

"What?! You will not - after lying to me for decades, I will not allow - "

"Half your nobles would side with me," Sandalphon says. "The Black Lady has been managed. I will arrive in Arland tomorrow. Do not touch the spell. If you do, I will have no choice but to conclude that you have turned against Hyperion Himself, and you may rail your complaints against the bars of the prison in Nelmar."

"I - "

>con't
>>
Remember the three step plan

1.Destroy and disrupt the summoning spell TONIGHT
2.Have Donovan tell daddy Flint that he destroyed the summoning ritual
3.Bring forth the Black Lady before Sandlethong shows up.
>>
"I will not repeat myself. I have waited 700 years for this, Lord Flint. You were not there when Erebus annihilated our armies, the four elemental lords. You were not there when the world fell to chaos. You were not there when I rebuilt it from ash and smoke. You were not there when I spared your grandfather Yi Fang's wrath so that Arland might have its day. We would not be having this conversation had my healers not saved your life when you were a child. I will not be denied the return of the Lord of Light, I will not have the masterstroke that I and my angels have worked on for CENTURIES, RUINED, BECAUSE IN YOUR OLD AGE YOU HAVE A FEW GUILTY MISGIVINGS!"

"...is what has happened to Donovan permanent?"

"Grow a damn spine." His visage vanishes. Arcturis is left there, staring at his feet.

"Father," Matthel says, "I'm sorry."

"Sorry." Arcturis turns to his son. "That's why you defended him. You stuck with him. You knew. You felt guilty. Did you ever truly love your brother at all?"

In that moment, Matthel looks so hurt that you almost feel bad for him.

Almost.

"...I love Donovan," Matthel says. "But if he knew..."

"Don't try to fool yourself. If he knew, he'd still be against it."

"Gentlemen," Metatron says. "You'd best get some sleep. I have a spell to maintain. Tomorrow is sure to be a tumultuous day."

Arcturis and Matthel make for the elevator.

If we decide to talk to Arty before disrupting the spell, we should follow him and call off the gang.
If we're disrupting the spell and worrying about damage control after, we still should regroup with everyone and come down with backup.
If we disrupt it before killing metalface, we'll have a superpowered light knight on our side.
Either way, we'll need to follow these guys out of here and send a message to our group before taking action.

Metatron would probably wreck our shit and we've got to make sure that Flint doesn't kill Arcturius in a fit of rage.

Alright, someone requested this be pasted to the new thread:

"I feel like the best thing we could do is ....

And just hit him in his feelings."

Standby for brainstorming!

Also this:
"
Guys, we need to decide what we do, NOW.

The way i see it, we have three options:

1) Wait for them to leave, and fight NOW.
2) Slip in the elevator and maybe think about convincing arcturius to change his mind
3)Escape, warn our allies, and come right back down, and beat metatron's ass with the help of our allies right above the cathedral"

Favor last thread seemed to be for:
Slip out
Speak to/break arcturius's loyalty
Come back with friends
Beat metatrons ass
Steal/consume the mirror
Kill the shael-kath and free fling
then stick the near- completed spell in our Pocket and hold hyperion's return hostage when sandy shows up tomorrow.
>>
>>30222290
>escape down the river
This secures an easy way back.
>>
>>30222350
I mean since we got our Wisp to tip off Flint with the out-of-context quotes, Donovan might be pretty steamed right now, even though his dad isn't as huge a jerk as we thought.

Also Matthel might encourage the misunderstanding to get his dad out of the way, since Arcturius seems to be being difficult.
>>

>>escape down the river

Escape down the river, catch arcturious out for a walk at night, returning to the castle.

Use telepathy to inform our allies what's going on on the way.

Then enact plan beatdown, depending on what arcturius has to say in private

There is nobody here who wants to leave this thing going until Sandals gets here, but we know the way back so there is literally no reason to get back to the group.
Keep in mind that they know the king and Matthel were talking, but not that the king didn't know. We don't want them to start shit when we have the spell to worry about.

I'd say just disrupt the spell before fighting Metatron, don't see much point in keeping the spell, and there's a risk Sandals ends up finishing it anyway. Hopefully we'll be able to get Arcturius to side with us or use the "they angels will blame you" threat to get him on our side, and have the entire city repel Sandals.

It requires wind magic, possibly from one of the Flints, to get back.
So we need to convince Arcturius to help if we leave.

We CAN'T fuck up the diplomacy roll if we leave, or else we're fucked. Absolutely fucked to the point that we'll have to go XP hunt like mad and then Erasure the whole thing.

Guys, this is delicate as shite.

I'm not saying we delay until sandy gets here, but i AM saying we act ont his information TONIGHT.

The ~only~ reason i say we don't eat the spell is because.....
.... Hyperion is the only source of anything in the world which could convince the angels to stop being dicks and get off their asses and help.
And we can dreamwalk through the nether to talk to him.
that alone makes the possibility of keeping the spell around worth considering.

Why the fuck do people want to slip in with Matthel and Arcturus?

We can't go back that way without tipping off Metatron, we can't talk to them right now without causing a huge mess, we can't get to our allies easily and get them here without securing a route for them to follow.

You need to read the last thread.
The spell's worked into spell sigils, spread across the terrain.

we.... have earth magic and pocket. There's nothing stopping us from literally Grand Thefting the entire thing out of the chamber.

Also, here's the clincher for stealing it:

I don't want to Consume or, or Destroy it, because just moving it doesn't take die rolls.
No die rolls, no chance for it to blow up in our faces.
having someone else examine it/do it for us also removes out dice from the equation.

This is yet another case for stealing the spell, actually.

putting Hyperion on the negotiation table is a huge gamechanger.

The prospect of the angels getting it back - even if we never let them ahve it -will make them way more inclined to listen after they get over being angry, instead of just being angry forever.
>>
>>30222941
We could always just put it underwater, and then open the portal while we're underwater elsewhere(and have everyone in our pocket for this, of course.)

People are probably just going to go ceiling but this would be the most stealthy.
>>
>>30222993
We're going to war with the Ring City, it's inevitable. With regards to destroying the spell, stopping the RC from summoning their God qualifies as a good idea.
>>
It seems that we could use this to convince papa Flint that Ring City a shit and he should side with us instead of just bending over for Sandals.
>>
>>30222963

Hecate is weak and she will be indebted to us for freeing her, she is the exception to the rule.

We do not know how the other Elemental Lords will react.
>>
>>30222993
It was was declaration of war to release their slaves.
This is just driving the point home.
>>
>>30223015
why do you think stealing is so safe in the first place?
It has been confirmed that they are arranged in a certain way and moving them can do anything and that is assuming they don't have magic protections on it.
>>
>>30223015

Now that you mention it, returning an elemental lord to the lands is such a world-altering event that really all the nations should have a say with it.

The problem with the angels is they are all dicks that are stuck in the past, and cannot move on from the Elementomachy mindset - they oppress people, they keep slaves, they use this entire war as an excuse for political gain - the world is better off moving FORWARD without the angels, and without the grudge-holding lords from their time
>>
>>30222993
>>30223015
I thought the whole point was to get Arland on our side against Ring City, not make diplomacy with Ring City. Because, you know, angels are unwavering hypocritical dickbags and any treaty we try to make with them would end in us getting shafted.
>>
>>30223072
We are allied with several angels.
>>
>>30223031
The important part of my statement wasn't so much the ring city art, but the Arland part. Arcturis is already wary of us and YI, to destroy the spell would mean a continued war with Arland even after the Kan'Abar situation is resolved.
>>
>>30223094
he means the zionist angels
>>
What if we sent Hyperion through a crucible of Order when he pops out of the portal all weak?
>>
>>30223094
Okay, the angels who are still in Ring City and didn't defect to haven.
The angels that still follow the highests that aren't Auriel.
The angels who had no problems with mass slavery and refuse to even fathom working with a being of shadow simply because it's black and icky.
>>
>>30223094
You really think bringing out gods of choas out is a good idea, especially when they warped the land around them?
>>
>>30223072

Hyperion's coming to arland -in the morning- and what do you think he'll do if he finds out His 700 Year Old Masterstoke was foiled?

He'll blame arland and attack immediately.
In the middle of negotiations.
When nobody is formally on any side
Its literally the worst thing that could happen at this time.

We need something that will get him to NOT do that.

We don't want to diplomacy the angels.
But they're going to barge into the meetings anyway, and we're gonna have to anyway.

We knew this was happening.

The key is to not get them to flip the table as soon as they join the game.

Actually, if they do try to attack and someone, say the Black Lady, sweeps in to stop him we've set things up pretty well for ourselves and shut the Ring City out entirely.

He seems pretty foolish to me most of the time but your point does remain.
>>
>>30223049
>why do you think stealing is so safe in the first place?
>magic protections on it.

Its at least as dangerous as consuming or dispelling it. That thing is such a powerful spell, a nightblaze may not even dent it, and it probably packs at least as much power as a dynamo if not more - and we know how dangerous that can be.

Anti-tamper safeties/security ..... will be triggered by other meddling besides stealing, anyway, though.

I'd ask you: why do you think any of the options are safer? Protections are in place no matter what.
>>
>>30223147
No the key is to get everyone to look at the Ring City like the major assholes they are and get them to chose to ally themselves with the Black lady instead.

they best way to do that is to get sandlethong to throw a big hissyfit, threaten to destroy and subjugate Arland.

I honestly think we need to fuck up the spell in some way tonight.

Stealing, disrupting, destroying; it doesn't matter. That thing needs to not work by the time Sandals gets here.

Then we can take the giant hissyfit he'll throw as the perfect opportunity to intro the Black Lady like other anons were saying.

Which is why we talk it out with him and figure out something together without going behind his back. Regardless of what we tell Arcturis, those nobles will still be in bed with Sandalphon.

>>30223227
I agree with the idea to get him on our side, but to rush the destruction of this spell could doom this alliance before it ever got started.
>>
Personally, I'm in favour of just stretching out as wide as possible and erasing this entire cavern, Metatron included.

But I acknowledge that this plan most certainly will not help the diplomatic situation. I just think that the risk of Hyperion returning and kicking off Elementomachy II: Electric Boogaloo is too great for this circle to exist for even one more day.
>>
>>30223327
I feel like it's very important that Hemmelus examine the spell and find out exactly what it does.

For all we know, Metatron and Sandalphon could be lying about the goal being freeing Hyperion, and it could just be Sandalphon trying to become Hyperion 2.0, or even just blow up the planet.
>>
We have the biggest opportunity ever.

To beat Sandalphon down, and have him watch as we grap Hyperion's hand and pull him out of the portal and say "Hello, I'm Shadow. Erebus is dead as of [whatever date we finally gathered all our shards]"

You guys have this idea that we can just do one thing, and it will make everything go our way.

You need to step back, go over the negotiations, and realize this is a complex as shit situation - anything we do, we HAVE TO SPIN to get the result we want.

going 'blah blah blah black lady makes us autowin alliance' is a great thought and all, but you seriously need to start thinking about the dialogue, convincing, and how we play this.

We have about eight-twelve hours to:
Prepare for sandalthongs arrival
Disrupt the spell somehow

Not have the alliance fall apart in anger and blame over those two things.

You need to be able to get back in this room, and it might have defenses you don't know about. But that won't matter if you can circumvent them.

You quickly attach your portal anchor to the ceiling of the room, nestled between a few stalactites. That should give you at least a little advantage of surprise...

You slip into the elevator with Matthel and Arcturis. They hit the switch. As the door closes, you see Metatron take up his seat in the center of the sigil, folding his legs beneath him.

The elevator grinds upward. For a moment, you're in darkness again.

"...father..." Matthel swallows. "Of course I care about Donovan. But this was bigger - it was more important than any of us. He would feel the same way."

"You know, son," Arcturis says, "I really don't think he would. And I don't think you would, either, were you him." He glances over at his son. "Why did they inform you?"

"...Sandalphon came to me, on one of my visits to the Ring City. He told me of the plan. Said he needed a man in Arland, needed me to watch over things, as Metatron would be sequestered below. I accepted the task."

"You're a damn turncoat, too?"

"It's not like he's going to die or anything," Matthel says. "Yes...it's a sacrifice. But Donovan would do it for the spell. You did."

"I didn't know it would effect him like that!" Arcturis shouts. "It's a fool's game, risky at best. And if Sandalphon has lied about this, well, what else has he lied about? I let him use Arland, because it's in our best interests. Because he promised that he would guarantee our independence and future alliance if I cooperated. And I figured that if the runt could make use of himself, then I might as well go along...but this. I can't stomach it."

"I don't like it either," Matthel says, "but Hyperion will save us, and usher in a new age of prosperity. This is bigger than any of us."

"My family," Arcturis says, "is more important than a future licking the heals of a force of nature that proclaims itself our master."

"Father!"

"What? You have something to say about that? Shut up, you indoctrinated little twit. I thought you were smarter than this."

The elevator opens. Arcturis and Matthel step into the catacombs and being walking back toward the door leading to the cathedral. You slip into Matthel's shadow.

"It isn't wrong for men to seek their own destiny," Arcturis says. "We don't need greater beings telling us what to do. Look where that got us. Decades of all-out war so fierce that it's taken us centuries to recover. And Sandalphon wants to bring that back."

"He just wants to bring Hyperion back. The problem wasn't Hyperion - it was the lesser elementals, that - "

"If you believe all that tripe, then you really are a fool," Arcturis says.

They reach the door of the cathedral. You are towed along in Matthel's shadow as they ascend the stairwell, and in short order, they're back in the hall leading to the nave.

"Father. What are you going to do?"

"...when Sandalphon gets here tomorrow, I'm going to have a long talk with him," Arcturis says, "and hammer a few fucking things out. In the meantime, we can use our guests as leverage to - "

He stops. Matthel stops behind him. "What is it?"

You're at the door to the nave. Yi Fang, Hemmelus, Adavan, and Donovan are standing at the far end of the rows of pews, having just entered the main doors of the church.

"Father." Donovan has his sword out. It's shaking in his grip. His voice cracks. "Matthel. You knew. You both knew."

I agree.

Sandalphon is going to try to browbeat the Flints into agreeing with him when he comes to Arland tommorow. His entire 700 year plan goes right out the window if this spell is disrupted, and he'll be completely thrown off his game.

I suspect, from what I have seen of Arcturis, that any further bullying from Sandalphon (And Sandalphon will probably blame Arcturis for this) will cause him to turn his back on the Ring City and throw in his lot with Archon. Right then, we bring in the Black Lady. Suddenly, Sandalphon has absolutely nothing going for him.
>>
>>30223349
>1.Destroy summoning spell free Flint from his curse
>2.Tell Daddy Flint what happened

Should be 2 then 1.

Arcturius is just LOOKING for a way to get out from sandy's thumb
We tell him the truth - that yi fang's presence here is entirely because he's dealt with this stuff before, and he owes us a massive favor - abigail is perfectly able to make archon's decisions.
And then the stinger - that the other cases fang's been involved in have always ended in the death of the host.

This will 100% guarantee he blames sandy for killing - or trying to kill - his son, gets us on his side, AND gives us permission/authority to go fix it when we offer to do so.

Then?

We rush in, beat the spell up, bring the black lady in during the morning before sandy gets here, and boom, gamechanger.

Arcturius on our side, all our nobles we persuaded on our side, sandy checked by all the players on the board, and unable to vent his rage at masterstroke being derailed.

"Donovan," Matthel says. The single name tumbles from his mouth. His eyes are wide.

"...what are you talking about?" Arcturis says. He does a better job of covering. "What is this? Hemmelus, explain!"

<Donovan, I'm in Matthel's shadow,> you say. You thoughts are projected to all four of your allies. <Matthel knew that the shel'kath would effect your life, but Arcturis didn't. He only knew it would drain your magical powers, not...hurt you. Your power is being channeled to a powerful spell under Arland maintained by Metatron on behalf of the Ring City. They're trying to summon Hyperion from the Nether.>

Everyone's heads move from Arcturis, then to Matthel. You watch their eyes search as they try to pinpoint you in his shadow.

And then you Blink to the far corner of the church, and emerge from behind a tapestry. The ruffling cloth draws everyone's gaze. "Donovan. I saw everything." You repeat more or less what you just said, aloud, so that Matthel and Arcturis are part of the reveal.

Donovan takes a step forward. He stares at Matthel. "...why?"

"Donovan, take it easy," Matthel says. "Remember who I am for a second. John is misrepresenting the truth."

"YOU SENT ME TO HELL!" Donovan screams. His voice echoes through the church. "WHY?!"

Matthel draws back, stung by the sound of his brother's voice. Hemmelus strides forward and clasps Donovan's shoulder with a firm hand. "Arcturis, it is -you- that must provide -us- with an explanation! And I will have one!"

ANY RETURN of the elemental lords pretty much depends entirely on their disposition and willingness to let bygones be bygones.

>>30223994
We do not exactly know what this ritual does, only that it summons something and what Sandalphon said, which we shouldn't trust. If it does bring back Hyperion then now might not be the time for it, but to rule it out entirely when we are trying to bring balance and freedom to all the elements is hypocrisy. This is not our decision alone to make.

>>That moment when you realize that the demons are working for Hyperion as well, who is playing both angels and demons to his advantage to double up his chances of being summoned by either side.

Actually, I was thinking about this earlier today, and trying to decide how to bring it up.

Okay, so summoning is a wierd art because anyone can do it. It doesn't take any particular elemental soul, because you're using what's already there - the nether - and the skill comes from shaping/manipulating it.

But there's still skill involved.
Summoning an elemental lord is the pinnacle of summoning. Its brutally hard, difficult and takes lots of power.

Just think about the effort that went into LEARNING the path to even get there!

Like, that's 'summoning demon lords for practice' territory as a stepping stone to get to lords.

Only the most ridiculously skilled summoners could do such a thing.

Of course..... it helps if you're immortal, and used summons during the war so you're already damn good at it.

I don't think Sandalphon was doing.
>to double up his chances of being summoned by either side.

But I do think he summoned the demon lords, or at LEAST taught nulis how to do it, and is workign with them and using them as an excuse to launch his crusade-of-salvation and take the world in under his wing.
>>
The hall is quiet.

"...Sandalphon..." Arcturis rubs a hand down his mouth. "What John says is true."

"Father, we cannot - "

"Shut UP, Matthel," Arcturis says. He looks up again. "The angels have a plan to return the Lord of Light to the world. Resummon him from the Nether, from where Erebus banished him."

"And I presume," Hemmelus says, "that the soul-sucking leech latched onto Donovan is part of this master plan?"

"It is," Arcturis says. "Sandalphon needed a powerful light mage of good pedigree. None of the angels were compatible, or he simply would have used himself. Something about their blessing disrupted the power transfer by the demon. The demon itself is merely a tool to deposit power from a mage over a long period of time in the spell. Donovan was...lightborn. He was an acceptable candidate." Arcturis looks at his youngest son. "It was for the good of Arland, Donovan. I didn't know it would hurt you like it did. I kept it a secret because something that sensitive had to be kept secret. From those who would disturb it."

"But Matthel," Donovan says. "You knew. You knew it would hurt me!"

"Donovan, think for a second!" Matthel shouts. "This is Hyperion we're talking about! And wasn't I always there for you? Didn't I always stick by you! I took care of you! I made sure you stayed safe!"

"YOU HYPOCRITICAL FUCK!" Donovan shouts. He launches himself forward, wresting free of Hemmelus's grasp. Matthel's hand flies to his sword hilt.

You rush up to Donovan and grab him from behind. He struggles against you, arms flailing. You hike up to his shoulders and lift him off the ground.

"Let go of me!"

"Calm down! Fighting your brother won't do anything now!"

Matthel is still standing on his toes, hand on his sword hilt. Your shadow snaps across the ground and links to his before he can react. And then he's frozen. His eyes dart about wildly. He moans slightly in an attempt to speak.

Arcturis looks at Matthel, then at you, noting the shadow. "What are you doing?"

"Restraining your sons. Both of them."

"...not a bad idea."

Fang strides across the room with Hemmelus. Adavan follows close behind. Your undead friend isn't his normal self - his fists are clenched, and he's marching with serious purpose. The idea of Hyperion being resummoned probably doesn't appeal to Hecate's general.

Fang stops in front of Arcturis. "Are you insane, Arcturis? Are you out of your mind?!"

"What are you talking about?"

Hemmelus shoulders in front of Fang. "What the Archmage means to say, is that a spell of this nature is highly...irregular. Summon, an elemental lord? The power required would be astronomical. More than any mage could muster."

"And so he's collected it over time."

>con't
>>
"It's not that simple!" Hemmelus says. "What if something goes wrong? What if the spell doesn't work properly? There's no way to do a dry run of something like this? What if they bore a second hole in the Core of Chaos? The Black Lady and the Most High patched it once, during the Shadow War. I don't want to risk weakening it further! Sandalphon is blinded to the potential consequences of his actions. The Elemental Lords are gone, and trying to change that is not worth the risk involved!"

"Thank you for the clarification, honored sage," Fang says. "Lord Flint. You're going to lead us down to this spell, and I am going to dismantle it."

"Dismantle..." Arcturis shakes his head. "You don't understand. Sandalphon is coming here himself, tomorrow."

"All the more reason to get on top of things, then."

"...I..." Arcturis seems torn.

Matthel strains against your Shadow Control. His aura of Wind churns and chafes against your grip. You can't hold him in place, not entirely. "...fa...ther...can't...let...Fang...the Lord of"

"Lord Flint," you say, "may I speak frankly?"

"...there's no time like the present," he mutters.

"I'm sorry," you say, "but Sandalphon has planned your son's death from the beginning. The shel'kath kills its host, in the end."

"I've seen it before," Fang says. "You might not trust my word, but I know where he got his spirit mage."

"...liars..." Matthel's Wind burns brighter. "...Highest...would...never...not..."

"You have no idea what they're capable of," you say to Matthel. Your expression silences his struggle. You turn back to Arcturis. "This process will cost your son his life. On top of that, as the sage said - a Demonic Pentaverate is in the making in Kan-Abar, and Sandalphon wants to summon Hyperion from the Nether? This may be the greatest moment of instability for the core in recent history, and he wants to disrupt it further If something goes wrong with the spell, Dobshire itself may be forfeit. We could be risking not only Donovan's life, and your country, but the destruction of Venia as a whole.

"The Most High has lied to you once, and he will lie to you again. He has even convinced your son," you say, throwing a glance at Matthel, "that the Empire's needs trump Arlands - and those of his own family."

"...put words...my...mouth...bastard...!"

"Shut up," you tell Matthel. "Lord Flint. You worry because Sandalphon comes from a position of strength - we are your new strength. Join our alliance. Join us." You lean back and fold your arms. "Unless when you said that you'd throw in with with Archon if he did not spare your son, you were only bluffing."

Arcturis stares past you, at the far wall of the cathedral. Everyone is watching him.

His eyes harden.

So, this is the Windburn.

A brief reminder:

>You briefly speak with Flint on the Windburn.

>He tells you that the Windburn is a magical technique mastered by Sebastian Flint, Donovan's great grandfather and founder of Arland and leader of the revolution. Essentially, Flint's family is capable of taking temporary control of the Skysever itself. The friction generated in the air by turning the Wind against itself is powerful enough to ignite explosive force, though it can be sustained longer without going that far.

>It is extremely draining, and demands several days of bed-ridden recovery after just a minute of actively using the spell. However, it can alternately devastate an enemy army or empower the user beyond human limits for a short time, potentially making the risk worth it. Flint's grandfather died during the Shadow War because of abuse of the Windburn. Having pushed the spell too far, his soul as vaporized by and added to the Skysever's blood magic.

>The Windburn isn't quite blood magic itself, but it's in a hazy grey area.

Nightblaze isn't going to work quite as well as we'd hope, I think, since the Windburn is literally just co-opting the Skysever.

If Metatron doesn't know about what is going on here upstairs, Matthel turning himself into a bomb is sure to get his attention. If it does, say hello to a mirror message to our resident Douchebag aggressor angel who just told Arcturis that any interference with the spell would be considered an act of war and several airships warping over Dobshire. Tomorrow Sandalphon was going to show up anyways, and chances are it was going to involve a show of force of some sort, even if he was trying to remain diplomatic. It would make sense that much of that is already prepared the night before. It is worth it to throw off our human disguise in this situation if it means saving everyone and not informing Metatron.

Fear or Mind Crush.
>>
>>30226038
Magic Power only effects our max mana and makes specific changes to spells that note the changes.

MP does not change how effective pocket is. It does not change how effective any of our spells are.

All the spells have power ratings. It is not based on levels in MP.

>>
>>30226088
>All the spells have power ratings. It is not based on levels in MP.

Yeah that's false.
Sm's stated that every level of MP increases general spell effectiveness, as well as individual mastery within the spells also increases it a little bit.
>>
Should I call a vote, or do anons want to debate further?
>>
>>30225947
Trying to use sleep gas against a single, powerful enemy, let alone one churning up high-powered winds, is pretty explicitly not a good plan.

Similarly, I don't know how well Terror is going to work if this whole thing started because he was strong-willed enough to break free of our Shadow Domination in order to initiate the Windburn.

>>30225935
Getting behind him helps us, but I'd rather we be between it and our allies if the thing actually does go off.

We're far more resistant to explosive force than the overwhelming majority of our friends.

>>30226038
To be fair, I can't imagine Pocket on an unwilling target is ACTUALLY the same magic resist check as any other spell, or else it would just be an immediate 1-mana Win Target Fight for as long as we didn't have a full cube of pissed off enemies from previous uses.

Let's lay out our options.

1. Pocket.
2. Envelop.
3. Nightblaze.
4. Nightblaze + Envelop.
5. Fear/Terror + Envelop.
6. Sleep Gas + Envelop.
7. Mind Crush.
>>

This, pls this.

Also we could Decay + Nightblaze or Decay + Pocket, or even Decay + Confuse.
>>
>>30226142

FUCKING THIS

Literally every MP makes all our spells better
offensive pocket is an offensive spell

herpaderp lets remove the problem from the source of his power, let him chill in void jail to cool his heels, and we don't use it because people are under the illusion it wont work?

When really it works just as hard as every other offensive option we're considering?

>>30226169
Yeah, but it makes it MORE viable, and i'm fairly sure that a regular human who's just starting to up his protections isn't gonna have a lot of Earth Resistance - which is also a factor.

I don't think any of these are good options. We need to conserve mana for the angel.

Also, if decay and nightblaze won't shutdown the sky sever, they wont shut down the windburn. We covered this already.

>>30226201
You don't know that, stop assuming it.

Pocket's a rank 3 shadow/earth technique, its at least as strong a DC as other tier-3 spells in general
>>
>>30226209
And Spirit Siphon.
>>
>>30226167
Which we have at the beginning of the thread.
>>
>>30226201
>Magic Power does not make every one of our spells have the same DC like the anon I was replying to was saying.
No, but it does make every single one of our spells more effective. It probably gives them all the same level of boost, and other factors make us better at certain types of magic.
>>
Magical Power effects your total available Mana, your ability to passively regenerate mana. Higher levels of Magic Power also increases the base power of your spells by a hidden multiplier.

That being said, Pocket does not have a stated base power because I didn't think about it as an offensive ability, and it really isn't meant to be used that way. So, it will not receive the beneficial multiplier of increased Magic Power levels, because it already gets a bonus from that in the form of increased pocket space.

And let's hang back on the "I told you so's". Everyone should be patient with newer players who may have glossed over the more obscure information while reading through the archives. Don't confront, inform. This is not the quest thread general.
>>

>>
>>30226231

Hm. I think spirit siphon is the most appropriate.

He's trying to muster up the energy to Windburn, so we take that energy away.

Blink+envelop, Siphon.

Nightblaze second, interrupt windburn first by cutting the power off from the engine.
>>
>>30226190
>>30226226
Pretty much these. People're just going 'uhrr, Pocket is DUMB' because they're pretty much dependant on anti-magicking everything at this point rather than attempting new strategies.

Pocket is THE optimum solution; It takes Matthel out of the equation so he can't continuously try to fuck us over, it gives his Windburn nowhere to go so he has zero option other than to just wait shit out in the Void, it's QUIET and doesn't attract any attention, unlike slinging fucking magic around. The only argument against it is "but it could be resisted!" Well so can Nightblaze, dipshits.
>>
>>30226259
I say Envelope the guy to contain the blast and use Decay to weaken it.
>>
>>30226248
And all spells have a base power, which this same multiplier is added to.

>>
>>30226291
>>30226336
I'm torn between these two.
>>
>>30226259
also people seem to only be sugesting our most basic spells, rather than our stronger ones that are made to stop stronger people
>>
>>30226259
What if we combine enveloping with Pocket? I mean, can we place a stretched out Pocket on our own body, and then pretty much wrap ourselves around Matthel and not!consume him?
>>
Spirit syphon + Earthforge.

Trap his winds in rock.
>>
>>30226317

Attempting to pocket a Flint using the Windburn will not be successful. It's not an offensive move and Matthel is using the most powerful ability he has access to, and he's one of the strongest Wind mages in the whole realm.

Pocket is not the optimal solution. Pocket is for carrying treasure.
>>
>>30226317
>The only argument against it is "but it could be resisted!" Well so can Nightblaze, dipshits.

I think we'd get a situational bonus to drag him in if we're all up in his junk line a shadow blanket, too.

Decay is shit, guys, why is everyone jumping on the bandwagon?
We can't decay the skysever.

Do something besides reaching for nightblaze first thing for fucks sake.

>>30226344
False. The skysever halves the effectiveness of all earth spells, remember our time on xile?
It gives no shits about things that aren't in the air.
AND
Siphon takes away the mana he's using to channel the windburn
>>
>>30226318

Decay does not block magic attacks, it simply weakens a persons magical capabilities, the WindBurn would probably still hurt like a bitch even after a decay.

that's why i'm going Nightblaze and Spirit Siphon
>>

>>30226352

Max power Decay and then Envelop.

Windburn will be weakened significantly, and we can physically block the rest until Matthel burns himself out.
>>

For the love of god this! Or something else that we haven't thought about yet. Like blinking to him and punching him so hard he's knocked unconscious.
>>
>>30226367
>Pocket is for carrying treasure.

So far we've used to to carry PEOPLE more often than we've used it to carry treasure.

Also, the fact that Matthel is trying to invoke the Windburn means that he likely wouldn't be able to evade the Pocket if we dumped his ass in it. He'd be too busy trying to start up his spell.

>>30226388
The point is we don't want Matthel to burn himself out, that's what depleting his mana first is for, so he has no means to trigger the windburn.

>>30226375
While this would be extraordinarily funny, the portals are extremely unstable, and he'd just be able to, y'know, stop doing it. From what we know, it's still a spell, not an unstoppable chain reaction.

And then he'd go tell Metatron what's happening.

Spirit Siphon is actually a pretty interesting plan, but it's still a bit worrisome since it ranges from draining 1 mana to draining it all. Kind of hit-or-miss.

Would it just be double the friction-wind and thus twice as destructive? Or is the technique more finesse-based than that, and it would actually turn into a battle of wills over who could command the Skysever to listen to them more?

Actually, this might be way more interesting that we thought it would be.

The Windburn isn't just usable as an offensive spell; it's a self-buff spell as well.

This might not be him firing off an anti-army weapon... maybe he's just making himself into an anti-army weapon instead.

You pour power into a Nighblaze! A spinning orb of anti-magic forms before you.

>mana: 32/58

For an instant, the world turns into a negative of itself. Shadows are blinding lights, and the flickering candles are wreathed in darkness. And then your spell fires!

The orb careens toward Matthel. Your allies raise their magical defenses. You sprint forward, intending to close the distance.

The Nightblaze strikes Matthel. And then it stops. The Wind churns. A storm of green wind like a cluster of daggers strikes at your sphere from all sides, eating it away in moments.

You blink the distance to Matthel, and your Spirit Siphon is at your fingertips. He looks up at you. Wind burns in his eyes.

fuuuuuuooooooSSSSHHH
BOOM

You're flying. And then there's darkness.

>you've taken 25 damage
>you've regenerated 4 HP (60/81)

It hurts.

You try to shift. You're pinned under something. You push at it. It doesn't budge. You shake off the pain, then push harder. A heavy chunk of stone rolls off you, and you get to your feet.

You're standing in nave, in a pile of rubble. You don't remember what just happened, but the entire wall of the cathedral behind you has been blown to pieces. The roof above you is crumbling.

There's a shifting of rubble to your left. Boulders are blasted back. Arcturis, Hemmelus, and Donovan are are pinned inside, shielded by spirit. It flickers away. Underneath that is Hemmelus's own shield of fire and light, spinning gently.

Yi Fang is half-buried in the rubble next to them. One of his arms is just gone - obliterated. He looks up at you. <Why are you standing there! Go! Now!>

What do you do?

I'm not sure that being under time pressure as a result of combat is the same thing as still being in combat; we're not under direct threat from an enemy at the moment, and I'm assuming the intention was that opening a portal while under immediate duress is what makes it require the two turns of effort.

>>30227327
Do we know how our portal's magic works? Can we open a portal to the sigil room and leave it there for our allies and then chase after Matthel manually, or does the portal itself have a noteworthy magical signature? 8/14 ain't too good.

>>
>>30227807
We gave them to Adavan. Hopefully they didn't get destroyed.

I do wonder if Adavan already left for the vault, though.

OH FUCK HE PROBABLY WANTS TO RELEASE HECTATE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE TO COUNTER THE POSSIBILITY OF SUMMONING HYPERION
>>
>>30227871
Does SM have character profiles for every single on them?
>>
>>30227871
>14) Tyrael(on our side)
Also having gay sex with a spirit mage.
>>
>>30227865
No, we did, Shadow and Donovan told him all about it right before the duel with the eldest brother.
>>
>>30227800
I think he's referring to the person who created the Shel'Kath energy transfer method in the first place, not where did the spirit portion of the energy come from.

>>30227718
Given that Michael was responsible for developing the mechanics behind the Ring City's Soul Slavery operation, it's not entirely unreasonable that he might've been responsible for figuring out the Shel'Kath plan also.
>>
>>30227790
So, how much better off would we be if Flint had gotten himself murdered by one of the faithful angels a while ago?
>>

no shit

The Eldest brother will now be on our side.

Just process that for a minute.
>>
>>30227913
Yeah, I checked it. I guess he didn't believe us and all of this is why.

CONSUME TIME
>>
>>30227807

Adavan has them.

>>30227818

Lore you too.

>>30227822

Good question.

>>30227833

...turtle dude?

Well, you're welcome.

>>30227844

No. The best plan would have been to shield your allies. The Windburn wasn't something you should have risked stopping at close range. Though, if you did stop it, it would have been a pretty immediate victory. You picked the high risk-high reward plan.
>>
>>30227898

he does not have the wind key, so it is impossible for him the free Hecate at the moment.
>>
>>30227922
>>30227920
We can always just teleport right under him.
>>
>>30227950
It's less than 5 minutes away from here and you better believe he isn't going to fuck around with subtlety to smash and grab it in the chaos.
>>
>>30227948
>You picked the high risk-high reward plan.
>In Shadow Quest
We picked wrong.
>>
>>30227948
>...turtle dude?
He means Archelon. Who ironically seems to be posting less and less in his Quest, and puts each new thread off for longer and longer. I think he can tell that he's driven off the majority of his posters and shat up the atmosphere.

But that's neither here nor there for this thread.
>>
>>30227948
>No. The best plan would have been to shield your allies. The Windburn wasn't something you should have risked stopping at close range. Though, if you did stop it, it would have been a pretty immediate victory. You picked the high risk-high reward plan.

Frak. Oh well, no sense crying over split milk and all that.
>>
>>30227962

he said he would wait for us, unlike you people apparently.
>>
>>30227950
No shit shirlock, the point was that he's going to go grab for it now in the vault because hes learned that the greatest antagonist of his leader is almost summoned.
>>
>>30227962
Not 5 minutes for him, even if he flys.

He ain't got supersonic.
>>
>>30227979

Hyperion almost summoned = Old Lich panic.
>>
>>30227979
That was before he learned about the summoning sigil for Hyperion, anon.
>>
>>30227948
>Adavan has them.
So yeah, when we get the chance we should probably get those if he died.

If only it was a little clearer to tell which was the plan was high risk high reward though
>>
>>30227968

Oh.

On a side note, Shadow Quest now has a toll for playing.

If you participate in the /qtg/, then for every negative thing you say about any other poster, QM or anon, you must also say something positive. Of course, you can say as many positive things as you'd like.

Don't like it? Well, don't shitpost. Alternatively, go fuck yourself. By the way, are you having a good hair day? You look great!
>>
>>30228028
Seemed like Pocket had the highest risk
>>
>>30228000

He would want to destroy the ritual, not abandon his allies mid battle just to run off somewhere days away even with flight.
>>
>>30228035

Say, SM, did you manage to check out Log Horizon?
>>
>>30228060

I have a tab opened on its wiki page to remind myself, but no, I haven't. I might watch a bit tomorrow night.
>>
>>30228035
You are a good person SM.
>>
>>30228035

Archelon a shit

but at least he has some pretty lips

>>
>>30228091
I love you

>>30228055
Right, so he'd grab the key from the vault and then come back to us with his ultimatum, which makes much more sense for his character.
>>
Seriously, enough with the pocketing. Do we really want to risk making another David?
>>
>>30228035
fug of u gaycunt :DDDDDDDD
>>
>>30228028
Honestly, even if we had shielded out allies, we would still be in this chase scene situation. It seems like there was simply nothing we could do to stop him.

Or he is headed for the key right now. That shit was about to get real and he needs to act now or never. He maybe made his escape during the confusion. Hence why we didn't even see his defensive roll.
>>
Hey SM, was there any way short of a 100 we COULD have stopped the windburn?
>>
>>30228035

Love you SM, irc tutorial offer's still on the table if you want

I just said that.

If we had Decimate...

>>30228141

Come to think of it, why the fuck isn't he crippled after using Windburn?

>>
>>30228181
He's young and he only used it for a few seconds.

>>30228181

takes prolonged use.
>>
>>30228183
Just call Shade a liaison between Steward and Haven, problem solved. Or a gift. Or part of a deal.
>>
>>30228224
Or just not explain it because were a shadow mage and allowed to be all mysterious and shit.
>>
So, frostbite Matty's ankles is the plan for next time?
>>
>>30228181
>after using Windburn?
Oh, he's not AFTER anything.
I'm pretty sure he's still using it.

>>30226965
>>However, it can alternately devastate an enemy army or empower the user beyond human limits for a short time, potentially making the risk worth it.
>The Windburn isn't just usable as an offensive spell; it's a self-buff spell as well.

>This might not be him firing off an anti-army weapon... maybe he's just making himself into an anti-army weapon instead.

>>30227659
>He's already on top of you in the cramped hallway, sword cutting down, wreathed in green wind that's tearing against itself!

>>30227790
>And it actually does cut air. A series of explosions rips down where you stood before, green wind igniting in a roiling ball of fire. It crashes down through the hall, leaving only a pile of rubble. Hazy smoke fills the air.

I'd wager that the self-cast version is probably a lot less draining than the anti-Army version, to be fair.
>>
>>30228141
>>30228150

The whole point of the Windburn is it gives you INFINITE COSMIC POWER for a short time span. So, no, unless you'd already done some other things to increase your power or had another elemental lord on hand, you weren't stopping him.

Well, you might have. The DC for your Nighblaze was one roll at 90 or greater, a second roll at 70 or greater, third roll not important.

>>30228201

I already know when I'm going to use the 1. If your roll for that action includes a supercrit 100, it would be countered.
>>
>>30228181
It cripples after a few minutes of use. We're probably going to see Mathel burn up from using it. As it is he's going to be bedridden for a long time assuming we don't do anything worse to him.
>>
>>30228254
No, breaking his arms and legs would be faster and easier, and uses less mana.
>>
>>30228162

Not tonight. I have to download and IRC client again.

Which one doesn't look like web 1.0?
>>
>>30228264
So technically our rolls for dodging his attack while chasing him would have been enough.

Damnit.
>>
>>30228264

I mean, they're pretty much all basic text, so you're never really going to get anything special.

mIRC is pretty much the go-to for non-web clients.
>>
>>30228351

Well, shit, I can use Mibbit.

I guess that's the easy solution.

Uh...uh...uh...

Well, alright.
