Welcome to Academy City. The time is sleepy, the weather is dreamy and the date is irrelevant.

You are Kyril Torikov and you are currently dreaming. You know this because you exist in that special state of awareness that was not quite wakefulness. Truly this wasn’t the first time you had a lucid dream. It was normal, apparently, for many Ability Users like yourself to have lucid dreams given the way the Power Development Program deliberately messed with your head. Having a Personal Reality just meant you were slightly out of touch with reality after all. If that were the case then Kamijou must be the most grounded in reality if he could neutralise even the warped powers of Kaoru. Her chief emotions to cutting up another human being and losing her hand was sheer indifference and pouty respectively.

Hell you knew some really fucked up people. Asuka has mind control powers and what she wants, she gets; usually with her bloody sword. Speaking of swords, that Kanzaki Kaori woman had the biggest one you’ve seen so far. She also basically kidnapped and used you for bait before taking a dagger to her heart and not dying. In other words she was a total monster. Idly you also wonder why the size of their weapons is proportional to the size of their chest.

In any case, what dream comes to you?

Heh, if they were fucked up, what did that make you? Y could see yourself in the future a few years from now with a penchant for knives. Those things were perfect for thrusting in to the backs of strangers. Patting down their cooling corpses for pocket change and at the end of it all, facing that disapproving stare. The stare that belonged to someone on the other side, a stare that would look great on Jaswinder Kaur as she hunts you down relentlessly like the psychopath that you were. She was duty-bound to chase you forever, the Ganimard to your Lupin, the Javert to your Valjean. What a sick mind you have Kyril Torikov.

Then you wake up.

The time is morning, the weather is okay, and the date is July 22.

You had a weird dream you reckon but the details start slipping away. You reckon that yesterday’s events put a bit of a damper on your on-going investigation regarding the Level Upper what with getting kidnapped and all. Time to get back to what really mattered. Your only lead now was Kiyama Harumi and given the conversation you had with her, she probably had a hand in it. However, directly investigating her was no longer an option. She was probably on to you. Your cell phone contact list has expanded by two with the addition of “Kaoru” and Kamijou.

To whom are you going to call for assistance?

I've always thought a Raildex Quest could be interesting if you swap around the three main males and their lolis.

>Accel tries to brainhack Index the way he did LO in canon. Leads to grimoir influx, thus Accel magic side early on, his esper powers getting nerfed from grimoire bullshit, and him being able to do magic if he uses his esper powers to keep his organs intact. Maybe some thing where he can "read" Index to force some kind of weird pseudo John's Pen mode. Decides that the lv6 shift is a shit early on and quits.

>Kamijou runs into ITEM. Is able to stop Mugino from liberating Frenda's top half from her bottom half. Puts him into conflict with Mikoto because of the HAHA TERRORISM thing. Has to save Takitsubo from her not-crack addiction at some point, which would probably be easier for him that Hamazura since he can just hold up a hand and make Mugino's crazy lazers fuck off.

>Hamazura runs into Last Order after she gets released from the tank and can't find Accel anywhere. When Amai abducts her and causes brain problems, Hamazura ends up pulling off some massive bullshit luck stunt. Macgyvers a fix with a PSP and a paperclip. Nobody has any idea how the fuck he made it work.

At least I thought it might be kinda neat.

There was a saying, don’t fix what ain’t broke. Your friends were the first you call. If you couldn’t do it alone, then perhaps as a team you may succeed. With the manpower, all you need now is a plan. Heading out to a non-descript family restaurant, you wait for your comrades to gather. One by one, they assemble like a member of a heist movie.

First to arrive is Kyousuke. He owed you big for that date with Asuka though you couldn’t say that you didn’t enjoy it. With his familiarity with the underground and cordial relationships with some of the Skill-Out gangs, you were sure that muscle wasn’t going to be a problem. The next to arrive is Nakazawa. He had law enforcement contacts thanks to his preference for older women and ability you jokingly called “Cake Eater.” It made sure that you had plenty of information and a way to dodge trouble when things got hot. Last to arrive is Tadakuni. You’re not sure how or when he arrived; only that he did. He was a Level 1 whose Ability was called Stealth Step. Coupled with the times the both of you smuggled the good stuff into Cypress Park there was little he couldn’t get without someone noticing.

“All right chaps,” you start, “Our objective here is information that could link Kiyama Harumi to the Level Upper. We need information on her, the strength of her defences and the means to get in and acquire it.”

Who do you assign to

All in all, you’re happy with your choices. Whilst having an extra set of eyes was good, you had trusted Tadakuni to operate alone so far and it hasn’t failed you yet. You were sure he would be okay. Kyousuke’s task on the other hand you probably were better off not meddling in. Not after the time you practically stabbed Tamezou in the back. It didn’t help that the Skill-Outs wouldn’t look too kindly to a Level 2 like you asking for some things. This left only one option, Nakazawa.

True to form, he’d hit up his girl, or lady, and asked for a few things. It’s slightly alarming how easily she surrendered them, not to mention how much of it there was. If Nakazawa was the one who acquired the data, you were the one who mined it. Kiyama was a researcher at the Advanced Education Department and got stuck with teaching a bunch of Child Errors. Those very same children were then used in an experiment to produce [REDACTED]. Well at least it matches her story. Now she’s a researcher at the AIM Analytic Research centres. As an aside you note that she’s applied 23 times for the computational power for the Tree Diagram and all of them had been rejected. Setting aside the question of what she needed the Tree Diagram for you focus on her research related to the Level Upper. Topics like synaesthesia for example and what to look for.

With your respective legwork done, now it was time to act. The plan was simple. You needed Kiyama out of her office so that you could actually go in there and look around. Thanks to Tadakuni’s recce, you know it is in one corner of the building and is on the ground floor so you didn’t have to worry too much about finding it. Someone who could call her out for lunch would be great. Then a two man team would break in to the building. Splitting up, one would ensure security, whether it be locked doors or cameras, is not an issue as well as erasing evidence of your presence. The other would make haste and acquire all the relevant items from her office. The last man would obviously be playing the role of Grognard, a separate pair of eyes for the team and someone who could facilitate their escape in the event of discovery. In short an onsite safety net. Who do you assign to

The time is a 1215, the weather is starting to heat up and the date remains unchanged.

This is the precise minute that Kiyama Harumi’s blue Lamborghini Murciélago leaves the parking lot off on a wild goose chase that Nakazawa has planned for her. Honestly, you’re not sure of his chances but he assured you he can keep her occupied for one hour. More if he could ensnare her with other activities. From his rooftop perch, Kyousuke gives you the all clear and Tadakuni breaches the backdoor with some tools the former had acquired. He’s handier with that thing than you are.

Obviously the both of you weren’t going to wander around in your uniforms. You had acquired inconspicuous get ups that matched the janitorial staff who were employed in the building. You also gelled your hair down slick, wore colour contacts and got some fake earrings. Tadakuni didn’t need that stuff but he also wore a band-aid on his nose as well non-prescription glasses. You guys split off naturally after faking some conversation through the hallways. At the security room stood one guard but he was rather bored. How to get him away from that console?

You find that the guard is having lunch, some instant noodles, despite a sign on the wall saying no eating or drinking in the security room.

“You,” you pretend anger at him, “I gotta get the floors done man. This isn’t going to be any easier if you’re spilling all that soup in here.”

He looks at you as if caught red handed and you gesture for him to get out silently but with a glare. Sheepishly he makes his way out and you extract a USB stick with an automatically running script designed to overwrite the security camera footage. It’ll take about five minutes and you get to work mopping the floor. With a flash, the cameras reset and you retrieve the stick and let the guard back in none the wiser.

The time is now 1242.

Of course as soon as you think this was going to go off with a hitch you receive a text message from Nakazawa. Most of it is complaining of how Kiyama’s lack of utter charm and sex drive is unnatural. Further complaints of her extremely logical mindset and unhealthy lifestyle are also noted along with her absolutely gorgeous body when she starts stripping that bland lab coat off of her body. It is clear that despite his best efforts Nakazawa has failed. She is expect to return within fifteen minutes and Tadakuni wasn’t finished yet.

You knew that you had to delay Kiyama somehow. Tadakuni didn’t need that much more time as he replies back with the fact that he had most of the documentation of the Level Upper. Besides, going in there would be suspicious if anyone caught you. With a quick message to the others, you exit the building and get rid of your disguise in a bag that you were going to burn later. You’ve even got a topic to distract her with. Waiting in the parking lot, her blue Lambo was unmistakeable as it pulled in to in a swift stop. She’s barely out of her car when you approach and greet her,

“Afternoon.”

“Oh, it’s you, Torikov was it?” she seems in a hurry, “Do you have a question for me?”

She seems to be suspecting you of something though you don’t seem to give anything away as you reply,

“As a matter of fact I do. A friend of mine has some problems with memory. Do you think you could give me some answers?”

She urges you on silently but emphatically.

“You see I was arguing with them that they didn’t need to record everything in a journal because their brains would never run of out memory. My friend didn’t seem to agree so I was wondering if you could put our argument to rest.”

“Our memories are not finite,” she answers quickly, “any doctor could have told you that.”

With a small shove, she moves past you.

That wasn’t enough. You had to buy Tadakuni more time. You had to stop her.

“Even if they have a library’s worth of information forcibly seared onto their brain?”

This stops the doctor.

“There are a number of misguided individuals believe that memory overload might kill a person. So in their misguided attempt to ‘cure’ my friend they are trying to forcefully induce amnesia in them.”

She turns around and scrutinises you. You’re not bullshitting here. Everything you spoke of was the truth and your ulterior motive was shielded by actual concern. Hell, you might even be able to pass on the information to Kamijou later.

“You’re serious,” she states evenly, “How is that, no, don’t answer that question. They’re not brain surgeons are they?”

“If by brain surgeon you mean a blow to the head then yes,” you shoot back somewhat relieved that she’s hooked, “I mean I’ve woken up with spots in my memories before and finding out what happen really isn’t funny.”

“I would imagine so,” she messes around with her phone, “I have a contact here who’s a specialist, go bother them about it.”

She tosses over her phone and leaves. Just as she does, Tadakuni messages you.

“Have loot, will bank.”

Which meant you had to get to the dead drop location to avoid potential pursuers. It’s as you make your way there that you get more messages.

“I’m being followed.” “Someone’s tailing Tadakuni.”

All told it was better than a full on alert.

>Catch and distract the tail.

Tadakuni was a model of inconspicuous appearances but even that did nothing if you really focused on him. It was crowded somewhat by the lunch rush being over which was perfect. The only problem was the people tailing him. From you corner of the street you counted two people on his tail. Both were girls wearing Tokiwadai Middle School uniforms and one of whom you recognised as Shirai. You don’t know about the short, brown-haired one though she was less subtle than her friend. If anything you had to commend Tadakuni for staying calm as a rock and unperturbed.

This wasn’t going to last however because they’d eventually catch up to him and then he’d be in a pickle. Good thing you weren’t alone then. Nakazawa was inbound and would probably be able to make the dead drop in your place. Kyousuke as well would know what to do when you made your move. Whichever one you went after to distract he’d take care of the other. Now the choice was up to you. Do you go for the Shirai or the other girl?

You obviously were not going to act like an entitled Yakuza if she bumped in to you. After all, she was a Lady of Tokiwadai and if Asuka has taught you anything, it was that you did not fuck with them. At least not at the level you were at right now. Maybe if you were more powerful or actually went out with one it’d be a different story. Thus there was only one other choice and that was taking advantage of your dashing good looks. If you didn’t speak Japanese you would definitely be considered a foreigner in these lands. In any case you try and remember how to speak English with an accent. You saw it once on YouTube and that guy was a certified professional, you think.

“Helloh,” you interrupt her, “Can you help me please?”

She is completely surprised.

“Uh, what?”

You pretend to understand her questioning tone.

“Help me,” you exaggerate, “I need find train station. Please.”

“I don’t have time for this,” she says threateningly in Japanese.

“Please. I have ticket. Go train.”

Her hair rises as sparks dance around her temples. If anything it was supposed to cow powerless, non-Japanese speaking tourists looking for the train station. You play the act to the hilt and look around as if in panic. From the corner of your eye, you see Shirai occupied with Kyousuke as Tadakuni slips in to an alley. That nearly sends Shirai after him if Kyousuke didn’t pretend to be grabby. She takes him down hard but hasn’t seen you yet.

Once Tadakuni broke line of sight it was mission accomplished. Shirai tried to teleport after him but it was probably too late. You back away from the Sparky, and apt name you muse, and beat a hasty retreat and “accidentally” run in to Kyousuke. Once more disappearing in to the crowd you determine that they have truly lost his tail before turning to leave. Kyousuke looked hurt but it was really just a minor fall. From what he described Shirai was a teleporter and a powerful one at that. The Ladies of Tokiwadai were nothing to scoff at.

By the time the crowd clears out a bit you and Kyousuke almost make it back to your dorms before you are stopped. Those eyes you remember, clearly, they were from the dream you had last night. Or was it this morning? Regardless they were clearly showing disapproval.

“You think no one is watching, you think you’re smart enough to escape, and most foolish of all, you think no one cares.”

Standing in front of you is Jaswinder Kaur. Of course, to make things worse, Shirai teleports in with Sparky around her arm. Sparky looks pissed.

If anything, Kyousuke didn’t have to take the fall when it was all your idea. That and you’d prefer it if he could keep procuring items of dubious legality for you. Would help make breaking out of jail you inwardly joke.

“As long as you’re only taking me in for questioning,” you state.

“Commendable effort,” Shirai seemingly gloats, “But he is still suspected of aiding and abetting a thief such as yourself.”

“You’re sure you aren’t mad that you got hit on by a guy?”

“What?” she seems outraged.

“It is true senior Shirai,” Kaoru butts in, “His only crime is loitering and attempting to woo you, both of which are not punishable crimes as per the code of conduct.”

“Fine,” Shirai isn’t pleased, “But we’re grilling him for all he’s worth.”

You part ways with Kyousuke there and are taken in to Judgement Branch Office 177. All items on your person are taken and inspected. These items are your wallet, phone, keys, Kiyama’s phone, USB stick with scripts and a smelly empty painkiller jar.

“Is this about Professor Kiyama's cellphone?” you speak as Shirai was about to start questioning you, “She just handed it to me and I never got a chance to give it back to her.”

“A likely story,” her brows knit, “But I’m asking the questions here. What were you doing at the AIM Analytics Research building at 1250 today?”

Not to say that you didn’t like whole-grain wheat but you’d rather only admit half of what you’ve done today was not in any way illegal.

“I was talking to Professor Kiyama about some memory issues a friend of mine is having. Something about amnesia and whether or not brains had a limited memory capacity,” you answer as truthfully as wished, “She referred me to an associate of hers but left her phone behind. She looked like she was in a hurry.”

Shirai and Sparky remain unconvinced though Kaoru seems to react to the news favourably.

“Oh she was in a hurry alright. She reported a theft at 1242 and she didn’t arrive at her office until 1257,” Shirai spoke.

“I’m not a human watch.”

She huffs at your reply.

“Torikov-san, the USB stick we found contains a script designed to overwrite CCTV footage,” Kaur speaks now as the good cop, “Its last modified date was today at 1235 which is at least several weeks old from its creation date. I know possession of such software is not illegal in any sense, but its use may be. Can you tell us what you planned to do with such a thing?”

You know you’re going to have to lie for this one, but the matter is how fancy a tale will you concoct?

You imagine that you were going to prank Aneue with it for her spinal therapy session a few days ago. It’s how you learned to lie. Lying wasn’t about lying. Lying is about picking the best world and living in it no matter what.

“Does that explain the painkiller jar then?” Shirai looks at you sceptically.

“Oh yes,” you smile, “Have to leave a calling card y’know?”

“I would imagine this friend of yours hurt you through this prank for you to go through such lengths,” Kaoru remarks, “Why if I was hurt badly enough in one I know would strike back with all the assets and power at my disposal.”

It was as if she knew. Her serene expression does not change in slightest.

There is a fourth dimension, beyond that which is known of most Characters. It is a dimension as vast as space, and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between imagination and existence, between fiction and reality; and it lies between the pit of a Character's actions, and the depth of their mind. This is the dimension of Authors. It is an area which we call, Schroedinger’s Psychoanalyis Theatre.

In today’s episode we shall be exploring the topic of dreams. Dreams that could have been chosen, that could have existed yet not. Dreams which we lay bare the soul of our hapless Character. His name is Kyril Torikov and he’s had the opportunity to dream. Oh what dreams shall we explore tonight?

Heh, if they were fucked up, what did that make you? You could see yourself in the future a few years from now across from him. All those lives, all that power and still it meant nothing to you. Justice had to be served and in its name you pursued your quarry to the ends of the Earth. In the end, only he stood before you. Your gazes were unrepentant, your wills were unwavering for between the two of you were the difference of men. “Justice was a funny word,” you were once told. If you could, you’d laugh, after all, you weren’t living your life correctly. He stepped in his right and you, a Southpaw countered with you left.

Then, the figure stands before you.

“Seriously? Fighting Kyril because he went off the deep end? Such misfortune. But perhaps it is not all so bad to follow your promise to the very end eh? After all you got to face me! The one who’ll shatter your illusions of righteousness is me. But alas, we know you won’t be that special brand of faggot. That one who screams JUSTICE in all-caps, right? Don’t lose your way.”

Heh, if they were fucked up, what did that make you? You could see yourself in the future a few years from now across from her. The lighting is low, bringing about dusk in its slow eventuality. Her clothes are blue and white, the uniform you are so accustomed to and her lips are sealed with but an index. It is that smile you note, full of mischievousness and magnetism that lures you in. A siren’s song is but a foregone conclusion for Odysseus and his men. But unlike him, you did not have anyone to hold you, to shackle and root you. No, it is you that holds her and your hands only hitch up her skirt.

Time stands still. You are frozen as Aneue approachs.

“What waifu faggotry is this?”

Your neck twists and you comically crumple in monochrome.

“The same goes for you too Kudou,” she chastises.

“My apologies Aneue,” Kudou replies.

“Did you not remember what I told you? Or does my advice not rate higher than your cumrag?”

“I’m sure he had other things on his mind.”

“Of that I have no doubt. You must know when to resist temptation. I know that you are all healthy young men with urges but that does not excuse your behaviour. Repent.”

Your neck does another full rotation.

“Notice that he calls me by name in his thoughts now? It all started with a kiss.”

She laughs.

“Don’t forget though, the immortal words of a philosopher. Give her the-”

“Time’s up!”

Heh, if they were fucked up, what did that make you? You could see yourself in the future a few years from now sitting in a designer jeans shop in London haggling for the price of one. These brands seriously sold for a lot of money, even A Certain Level 0 Slut bought them. It is at that moment that Kanzaki Kaori walks in. Asymmetry is her calling card. It enables the mystery of protection. You just think it looks so bad not even magic will touch that shit. The jean shop owner, of which is a mutual acquaintance shouts at her for ripping and cutting another pair. Defiling his product in the name of style and protection is a heresy of the highest order. It is one that he will not stand and asks her to leave. She of course, needs him to track down someone for the jean shop owner is a magical assassin by day, jean shop owner by night.

It is then that Kanzaki spares you a glance.

“I see that you have been entertained enough by shiny plot hooks and mindless samefagging that you have ended up in the past. How remarkable. In fact it is idiocy of the highest class such that God may not be able to overcome you. It is this Kanzaki Kaori’s humble request that you return from whence you came, demon, and speak no more. For you have proven beyond all doubt that your suggestions are crazy and wild enough just for your sleep-deprived slave to run with. It makes him stumble and he loves it. Keep your meta sadomasochism in check.”

Looks like that’s all the time we have today. For until next time dear audience, for another instalment of Schroedinger’s Pyschoanalysis Theatre!

Seriously, don’t take this interlude seriously. Follow my twitter to find out the next time I run.

TESTAMENT. Speaking two languages in once sentence. I am terrible at Japanese aren’t I? When writefag and /tg/ meet, the story begins.
Questions and comments are welcome and I’ll stick around for a bit until I collapse or something. Was starving for the better part of the quest.
