You open your portal. You dive in first, flanked by Arcturis. Hemmelus sails in after you.

Heat assails you, dry, hot air. The room is glowing red and yellow. Steam rises from the river. Flickering shadows dance on the walls. It's like dropping into a blast furnace.

The sigil below you spins. Three of the eight elemental points hover off the ground, but five remain solidly anchored.

Metatron stands in the middle of the room. The air around him warps and ripples. His shiny armor is glowing hot-white.

Arcturis tucks his arms in, diving straight for his target. Wind drives him forward, faster, and he's a green missile dropping into the room.

Your Corrode strikes Metatron before Arcturis reaches him. Muddy splashes of Earth magic latch onto the angel's armor. You think they have some effect, but the cave is like an echo chamber of magic. You can hardly tell anything apart from the surroundings.

Metatron looks up. A whip of fire lashes out above his head, and a rolling wave of flame follows behind, growing with every step. You shield yourself.

Hemmelus takes his staff in both hands. A shining shield of light and fire surrounds the three of you, golden against the deep red of the whip's attack. You can feel your skin singe, but you're spared the worst of it.

You feel your burned layers drop off, and new shadow collected over them...but it's slowed. The light in the room is too bright; it's effecting your regenerative ability.

And an instant later, Arcturis strikes Metatron. The angel blocks with both arms crossed, taking the sword strike on his bracers. They glow neon white, fighting back against the thousand green needles surrounding Arcturis's blade.

His blade slips on the block, and he steps past the angel. Metatron spins to face him, mainting his position in the center of the room. You land next to Hemmelus.

"...this...is the 3rd Highest." He grips his staff. "John...I hope you've got something good up your sleeve."

There should be enough for at least one Tidal Force. We tell Arcturis to fall back for a moment and then blast Metatron. With luck, we'll stun him enough to use Hammer.

As the earthen magic builds in your palm, you call out a name within you. <Maker.>

The ball of brown light jumps threefold in magnitude. Pebbles and stones shift below you. A crack spiders in the ground, from the heat, or your magic, you can't tell.

Meanwhile, Arcturis and Metatron duel with swords. Locked in close-combat, Metraton's whip has wrapped up around his right arm, seemingly on its own. Arcturis uses his Wind to stay mobile, attacking and then withdrawing before Metatron can get in a hit.

He doesn't use the Windburn like Matthel did. Matthel used it in long wasteful bursts, but Arcturis wields it like a fencer, stabbing and slashing for just brief instants, conserving his energy as much as possible. With such a powerful spell, long experience is probably more important to controlling it.

Metatron seems to be driven back, but he raises the wrapped forearm as Arcturis's Wind launches him in for another attack. A wall of red fire rises up, and Arcturis is barreling straight for it!

Your Corrode strikes Metatron straight on. The wall of fire flickers, and holes appear. The angel staggers.

Arcturis stabs inward. Metatron's tries to channel that protective white power to his forearms, but he's still recovering from his failed counterattack. With his magic weakened, his whip is sliced to pieces by the needling Wind, and his reflective armor of his gauntlets is immediately covered in scratches. The heat of the room seems to dip down.

He still seems to be working on a counter-spell, but that should keep Metatron under control for a few moments.

If he's off-balance, it's going to be more practical to get in range and make him react to attacks from two directions. A magical attack doesn't change how he has to react to Arcturis, while us closing to melee range throws him off balance defensively.

Also gets us into range for Hammer a little further down the line when he feels like he has acclimated to our style of melee combat.

You charge at Metatron, leading with Spirit Siphon. Orange tendrils whip out from you, swarming around his heated aura.

Metatron spins toward you, slashing with his sword. It flashes white, and your Siphon burns to a crisp!

At this range, you've got no choice but to follow up. You strike him, and he blocks high with his sword, cutting once, twice, three times, faster than you'd expect. Your limbs and spears of shadow are deflected away, and every block singes your skin.

You back off as Arcturis flies in to assist, and Metatron is forced back almost immediately, but he is able to compensate. Arcturis's needles swarm over Metatron's armor with every blow. Waves of heat rise as they clash, but they're still weakened by your earlier Decay...but not for much longer.

You think to support Arcturis with more magic, but something's wrong. You're not regenerating. It's not just your health that's being effected...

Hemmelus taps his staff into the stone. The room roars with fire and the clash and flare of magic, but you can hear that solid thunk of wood on rock, echoing clearly and precisely.

Coolness washes over everything. The gold-red light dies. A blue glow rests on your skin.

Metatron marches forward as Arcturis steps back, clutching the wound. The angel raises a hand. A red orb rushes out and strikes Arcturis. The blue glow around him dies, and with it, Hemmelus's enchantment.

But Metatron can't press his advantage further, because you're right behind him.

<Resolve.>

A Cone of Destruction erupts before you. Metatron is buried in a wave of Shadow. The force gouges a trench in the solid rock.

When the dust clears, Metatron is still standing, facing you. His armor is somewhat blackened, but a shield of white light holds before him. "Is that all, Nyx?"

"HAMMER!"

You Hammer appears in your hands as you swing your arms. It slams into Metatron's shield, and the Light shatters like a pane of glass. The spell slows you just enough that Metatron starts to back up, stealing some of the momentum from your strike. But your Hammer connects directly on his chest.

There's a sound like a gong. Shadow explodes out in every direction. Metatron is blown backwards across the ground, a cracked, steaming hole in his chestplate stretching up his shoulders and down to his waist.

Arcturis is right behind him, and the Skysever glows green around his entire body. Metatron gets his forearms up, but the combination attack is too much. The angel is sent careening across the other side of the room and slams into the cavern wall. He slumps to the ground.

He's stuck in the past, and the rest of the world is moving on without him. It's time he woke up and realized that. End the spell!"

"...ah, Arcturis. Great Sage. John Nyx." He raises his head, still clasped in shimmering iron. "If only you knew the past yourselves...you'd be stuck there as well."

"What say you?!" Arcturis demands.

"I say..." Metatron finally regains his feet. "That I haven't done this in a long time."

He begins to unbuckle his chestplate. It falls to the ground.

His skin is burned. Terribly, horribly burned, browned, cracked, mottled, like leather left in the sun and then baked over a fire. How he can move at all without searing pain is beyond you.
