MONDAYS SUCK EDITION

Scavengers, Trespassers, Adventurers, Lolis, Killers, Explorers, Robbers.

YOU ARE LOLI,

and today, Vasa has agreed to teach you things!

Though now that you're both stood outside the station in the dawn light, she seems to be at a loss as to how to proceed. You try to prompt her on what you'll be doing today, but that just flummoxes her more. "Er, well. I don't really know where to start. I've never had to teach someone before... Tell you what, what sort of stuff do you want to get better at? We can make it up as we go."
She's definitely not feeling too comfortable with this, so y you think you should start out with...

[ ]Close combat: something you're good at.
[ ]Shooting training: something she's amazing at.
[ ]Sneaking about: something she thinks you need.
[ ]General Knowledge: start off easy.
[ ]First Aid: so you can help the team.
[ ]Other.

Either sneaking about or general survival knowledge were the ones I had in mind when I originally suggested having her teach us. Loli isn't very good at those. Both would help us get around the zone without alerting everyone in a five mile radius. Which will help us try to get the jump on Kiyiya instead of having to fight him even.
>>

"Well, I'd like to be able to sneak like you. That'll be really useful, right? And if I don't get seen, everyone else stays safe!" Vasa nods her approval at you, before thinking a bit more.

She comes to some decision, and starts her lesson. "Right then, if you really want to be invisible like me, you'd need a ghillie suit like mine. But they take weeks of effort to make and, well," she gives your outfit a pointed look, "I don't think it matches your style. But you can at least try being sneaky without it." She asks you to wait for a moment, ducking back inside the station and returning a few minutes later supporting Kris, who seems to be letting more weight fall on her ankle now. She sits her down on the concrete pipe on the patch of greenery just outside the main building, before explaining: "okay, we're going to play a game. We're going to start off hiding, and you're going to try to touch Kris. I'm going to try to touch you. If Kris sees you, you lose. If I touch you, you lose. Sound good?"

You nod, and Vasa points to one of the train carriages on the railway line, and tells you that your starting point is behind it. The game starts as soon as you reach it.
You start walking towards it, and when you're almost there, you glance back over your shoulder. Vasa's nowhere to be seen. Kris is beaming happily at you. A few more paces brings you to the train.

As soon as you get behind the train, you rush to the far end of the carriage, meaning to circle all the way around to the other side of Kris. You barely make it past the first of the surrounding buildings though, when you feel a tap on your shoulder.

!!!

You spin around, and find Vasa leaning lazily against the corner of the building you'd just run past. "Predictable, sloppy. You're not paying attention to your surroundings and rushing straight for the objective. Start again."

Slightly disappointed, you make your way back to the train and try again.

>>30299176
This time, you head further away from the train and move around the other way, where there's more foliage to cover your approach. You don't run this time, instead trying to keep an eye out for wherever Vasa might be hiding.

You make it a decent distance around, and are coming up behind Kris when you step on a twig. At the sound, Kris glances over her shoulder, giving you a cheerful wave while giggling. "Hi Loli!"

Vasa manifests a foot away from you out of the greenery. "Wow. Better, but still terrible. Look where you're going, the world hates you just as much as the people trying to kill you around here. Again."

You kick the twig in annoyance, and head back to the train once more.

For the third attempt, you head back along the train for the buildings again, and flit your way between them, carefully watching all the spots Vasa might be hiding in. You still can't see her anywhere, but you close the distance to Kris, creeping steadily up behind her, humming to herself and gazing about the clearing in a content manner. Just a few short yards away, something flickers in the corner of your eye. Before it can reach you, you dart forwards avoiding the touch of defeat and leaping for Kris. Her head starts to turn as soon as she hears the movements, but you collide with her before she can register what you are. You topple over into a heap on the ground, and Kris burst into bubbly laughter when she realizes what you'd done.

Vasa is standing by the pipe, giving you a blank look. "Alright, yes, you got the objective. But that was a little outside the spirit of the game, really."

Kris comes to your defense. "Aw, come on Vass, it was a valiant effort! She got me before I could see her!"

"That's not the point," Vasa grumbles. "Well, I'll give you the win if you're fine with that. Want to take a break, try something else?"

You decide to use all the tricks in your book for this one. You book it to the far end of the carriage, and move towards the buildings, scanning across the area. You notice half way between you and Kris, a lone mound of earth that you're pretty sure wasn't there before. You grin at it and double back in the opposite direction. You see the mound shift just as you're going out of sight. As soon as you're concealed again, you wait for a few long moments, before slipping out the same direction again. The mound is gone, but you can't see where she might be hiding now. You go wide, right the way around the buildings and out into the wilderness outside the station. You circle all the way around the station, keeping below the hillock between you and Kris, only crossing the ridge when you get level with the tower. As you're sliding down the hill on the other side, you sense movement out of the bushes to your side, and hurl yourself away from them. The sound draws Kris' attention, but you duck behind the tower before she can get an eye on you.

You peek out from the tower, and wait for Kris to lose interest and turn away before you get back to creeping up on her. You try to keep the tower between you and where you last heard Vasa, until you get to the end of the concrete pipe Kris is sitting on. Looking at it... you're pretty sure you could fit.
You drop down and slide yourself in, finding that you just about slide through it with little resistance. Aha! With this, victory is assure! You crawl slowly, as slowly as you can along the pipe, trying to make no noise whatsoever that might alert Kris to your presence.

A whisper in your ear. "My victory, then." A pair of hands land heavily on your shoulders.

"AAAH! What!? How did... NO!" You protest that she managed to catch you. Kris jumps in surprise at having both of you suddenly appear right next to her.

"I saw you enter the pipe. There's only one way out. Victory was mine as soon as you tried it." Her smug smile transforms into a wolfish grin. "And I'll be holding onto that irrefusable order for now. Thanks."

>>
>>30299883
You ask Vasa if she could keep teaching you, maybe tell you about some survival stuff. She pauses for a moment, before admitting that again, she wouldn't really know where to start. Kris pipes up, "well how about mutants? I'd like that too. I mean, I know what they all are, but not anything in detail."

"Alright, mutants." Vasa nods eagerly at Kris' request, and starts on her lecture. "Every animal in the Zone has evolved and adapted really, really quickly. Like, how most dogs around here are blind. Your eyes can't see things like radiation and anomalies, but you can often hear them, and sometimes even smell them. The pups who are born blind usually have better smell and hearing, so they managed to survive better than normal dogs, so they ended up being the only type of dog here-"

Over the next few minutes, Vasa rains knowledge down on you, so much that you probably missed quite a few interesting tidbits and minor details, but you're pretty sure you understood the gist of what she was saying.
What you find most interesting is that by her description, Doggy is actually a "Pseudodog", and Nibbler is a "Tushkano"! It also sounds like there's quite a lot of mutants you haven't seen yet, and that they could be much scarier than what you've already faced!

When the short lecture is over, Vasa motions that it's type for more practicals, and once more asks if there's anything you'd like to focus on.

Ah, I wouldn't go that far. What we need to do is change our style to be less reckless overall, not picking every fight we can find so we don't attract as much attention to ourselves. That's something we need to start doing anyway, otherwise Kiyiya will ALWAYS find us. We need to turn that around and find HIM instead. And that's not just a matter of calming Vass, it's a matter of we can't win if we always enters the fight with the upper hand.

Well, how about first aid? You point out that it would be helpful to the team if you knew how to treat them, right? A look of panic crosses Vasa's features at the request, and she looks to Kris for help. "Hmm, I guess I'd be the better one to ask for that, huh?" Kris sits up straight, "okay Vass, can you go get Sergei? I need to change his bandages anyway."

Vasa heads inside and returns a few minutes later with an annoyed-looking Sergei. "I said m'leg's fine, jus' leave'ut!" Hearing him complain, Kris gives him a light scolding and tell him to sit down in front of her and give her his leg. He does so without further complaint, and Kris starts to tell you what she's doing and why.

"Okay, so when I was checking him first, there were two things I looked at. Whether there was anything in the wound, and how badly he was bleeding. Since the bullet went right through..." she rolls his leg a bit to show you the back side, where there's a neat exit hole only a little larger than the entrance, "that means that the bullet didn't get stuck. And see it's quite a small hole? That means it didn't hit anything inside and explode into little bits, so his bones are fine too, or should be at least."
"Then, because he was bleeding quite badly, I made sure to tie a belt around his leg to cut off circulation while I worked. See the bruise here?" A light mark around his thigh, "this is where I wrapped the belt quickly to slow the bleeding. It has to be really tight, but you need to make sure you only do that for as long as it's needed."

She continues on in this manner, pointing out signs that she was looking for, what they meant and why she did what she did. She also branches off, telling you what you should do if it comes up as something different. By the time she's finished wrapping Sergei's leg in a clean bandage (which she says is to keep the wound clean and stop infections), you're pretty confident you could deal with almost any gunshot wound!

When she's done with that, she dismisses Sergei, and goes on to tell you how almost all cuts, scrapes or bleeding wounds are much the same, so long as no vital organs are hit. It's good information to know, but you feel like you're going to need to know the other bits, too. Like what to do when a vital organ IS hit. Kris falters at that, though, saying that it's probably too advanced for you when you've never had any first aid experience at all. Besides, she'll be there to help you, so you shouldn't ever need it!

By this point, the Sun's already high in the sky, and Kris suddenly lunchtime. She reaches into her pack and pulls out three ready-made sandwiches. It's a plain lunch, just some dried meat in bread, but it fills you up just fine. You don't get to say much during the meal, as Vasa and Kris lean in close together and talk quietly about nothing in particular.

After the quick lunch is over, Vasa bounces up, clearly eager to do something active with you.

You ask Vasa about possibly being able to track people, or being able to spot them when they're hiding.
"Okay, we can do that," she says. "We'll play the game again, except this time, you've got to find and touch me. I'm going to be trying to sneak away from you." You agree, and she tells you to close your eyes and count to ten, then track her.

Right! How difficult could it be? You close your eyes and start counting.

You open your eyes, and Vasa is nowhere to be seen. You look around, but there's no sign of her anywhere. You start to wander about aimlessly, before realizing it probably would've been a better idea to get some hints as to how to find people BEFORE playing the game...

After a few more minutes of aimless wandering, Kris hisses at you. She points down at the ground a little way from your feet, and after a moment of staring, you notice a drag mark through the mud. Aha!
You trace it quickly, following it along until it ends back at the point where you both started. Oh, you went the wrong way. You about-face and track the mark along in the other direction through the grass until it stops at a small mound.
You grin and poke it with your foot.

A hand appears and slaps your foot away. "Alright, that took you way too long to notice such an obvious track." Vasa stands up so she can look down on you. "I'm not gonna make it easy for you this time. Make sure to look out for anything different or out of the ordinary. Anything I might've left behind when I moved past."

She has you close your eyes and start counting again.

This time, you open your eyes and look down at the mud around your feet, to see if you can follow the tracks again and... nothing. No mud trail, no brushed-aside grass. No even footprints. You walk a couple of paces around in a circle, growing wider and wider from your origin, trying to find any sort of track anywhere in the area. But even after you've circled out a good twenty paces from your start point, you still can't find anything...
Gah!
You look up and around the place, but there's no sign of her anywhere! You look to Kris, silently pleading for help, but she just shrugs helplessly at you.
After a full five minutes of searching, you finally spot her as she comes wandering back into the area from between the buildings. She looks at you as though despairing at your pitiful attempts.
>>
>>30304441
"Alright, I thought I'd made myself quite obvious on that one... this time, don't just look near you for the details. Keep a broader picture in mind and look for the things that don't fit. Tracking isn't much different to searching for something. You just have to look for the signs that it used to be there, rather than where it is."

You're put back in the starting position and your eyes are closed once more.
After you count down, you open your eyes and...

Well, no sign of Vasa, obviously. However, your subconscious is telling you already that you can see something... something that doesn't belong.
You try to zone out, turning your view side to side, trying to center on what's bugging you. After a few more seconds, you zero in on it. One of the nettles near the building opposite you has been flattened against the building, as if something brushed heavily against it! You jog quickly over to the building, and peek around the corner. A little ways along, there's a smudge in the mud on the edge of the hillock, as if someone had pushed themselves up the hill.

You rush to the top of the hill, following a few more smudge marks. At the top, you notice something on the floor. A small length of muddy string. After picking it up, you realize it's a shred of Vasa's ghillie suit.
Looking around from this spot for the next clue, you finally spot her. Just over the ridge from you, curled up underneath a bush. You slide down the hill and grab her with both hands. "HAHA! Found you, I win!"

Vasa smiles back at you, while gently shrugging your hands off. "Heh, you did. Well done. That was better than I expected of you."

The both of you start making your way back over the hill to Kris. When you're almost there, your PDA starts to vibrate in your pocket. Apparently, you have an incoming call from Beard again.

You hit the button to answer the call, and bring the device to your ear. "Hello? Beard?"

"Loli? Ah, good to hear from you. You're late for your next outfit, I was worried something had happened to you!"

Oh, right. That was a few hours ago. "No, I'm okay. It's just... some stuff happened and I'm not very close anymore."

"Not close? Where are you?"

"Uh, Sergei called it the Jupiter plant." Vasa gives you an evil look as you tell him where you are, you mouth back at her that it's only Beard. She seems to lighten a little.

"Ah, right. You're around the Yanov station then? Well, that's fine. If you'd like, I can package this stuff up and get it to Hawaiian. I'm sure he'd be more than happy to take the pictures for me. And I have some extras for you and your friends that they might like." You relay this last part to Vasa and Kris, who returns the question of what he wants in return. "No, no, nothing like that. They're gifts. Consider it... and investment, if you like." Kris seems content with that answer, Vasa less so.

You thank him for the thought, and are about to hang up when he catches you, "oh, another thing. The loner Ice was asking after you. Should I tell him where you are?"

>>30305325
You thank him for the message anyway, and end the call. With a little prompting from Kris, you find Ice's number in your contacts list (a huge list of two people), and call him. After two rings, Ice's voice comes in on the other end. "Hey. I was just about to call you. You didn't get back to me, I was wondering if that meant you didn't need my help for anything after all."

You can practically hear the unvoiced question buzzing down the line at you.

I don't want to ask him to go snooping around because it'd be dangerous but if some guys across the bar are talking too loudly, maybe give us a call.
>>
>>30305574
Can he spread misinformation effectively so that even Kiyiya would hear and believe it?
>>
>>30305574
"That's not it. It's just my big sis keeps telling me not to let everyone know where we are. There's a guy called Kiyiya that's trying to do horrible stuff to us, after all."

"Right, Kiyiya. I'd heard about that. Hey, want me to see if I can do something about him?"

You look askance as Kris and Vasa, and both of them go into deep thought for a few moments. Kris' eyes suddenly light up as an idea occurs to her. "Hey, can you get him to tell Beard to act like he's not actually sending the stuff here, and that we're heading back to Skadovsk to pick it up."

"Yeah, sure, that shouldn't be a problem."

"Then see what he can dig up on any new mercenaries coming into the area recently, who they got in touch with and what direction they were headed."

"Uh, that's a tall order, miss."

"And weapons supplies. See if you can track any of these new guys with their weapons and ammo to a seller, and see if they know anything."

"I'm definitely not making any promises on that one, but I'll do my best. I'll call you as soon as I have something." He ends the call, leaving the three of you in a slightly more positive mood.

Kris glances up at the sky, then at her watch. "Well, it's getting late. I think we might want to call it a day here."

She's stood up, a pained grimace creasing her face from where she'd just put weight on her ankle in order to be able to catch you.

"Don't, Loli. Just leave him, okay? If he wants to see you again, he'll find us. And we can deal with him when he does. Until then, just forget about it."

You're about to shrug her off and look for him anyway, when you see the look in her eyes. Pleading, desperate. Forceful.
"U....Nnn. Okay, Kriss-neechan. I- I won't look for him." Her features instantly relax back into her usual smile, and she limps back to her seat with Vasa's assistance.

"Haha, yeah. You did amazing, Loli. You're getting really good at the sneaking thing!" You beam back at her, then stare at Vasa.

"...What?" A few more seconds of staring, and she sighs. "Fine, alright yes. You did alright. You did good." You squeak in glee, flashing her the biggest smile you can muster, before dropping the next question on her.

"'Kay, so we did the bit that I promised for," you say in a mischievous tone. "That means its time for the bit you promised, right?"

Vasa makes a choking sound, before flailing her arms at you. Kris tilts her head in confusion. "Promised? What did you promise, Vass?" Vasa freezes mid-flail, her mouth working but now sound coming out. After the third attempt, she clamps her mouth shut and spins around, her back to you.

From this angle, you can only see the corner of one of her ears, but you can distinctly make out the color of it rapidly turning from white to tomato red. "Mmm??" Kris looks to you for an answer, but you just grin at Vasa's discomfort and leave Kris hanging.

But it's still a plushie, right?

On another note, am I the only one concerned by Kris' behavior? I always feel like she's hiding something, manipulating us, but I can't imagine to what end. I mean yea, she lied to us way back when we first met so that could be why I don't trust her, but... Tell me it's not just me who's worried.
>>
>>30307913
I'm not worried. I'm pretty sure there is nothing we can do before she betrays us in one way or another. Well, maybe she won't betray us, but we learn of her original intention of doing so. I just want Vasa to warm up to Loli.
>>
>>30307913
I've been more preoccupied with how Vasa's contemplated shooting us, but now that you mention it Kris could be a lot scarier.

Vasa's surprisingly easy to read, not sure about Kris who's only modes are Bubbly and At-Risk-of-Dying.
>>
>>30307660
The artifact is used to create chocolate. The boy probably lives in a choco-house at the center of choco-woods, and the average Stalker assumes that whatever anomaly created it is either so weird or so dangerous it's not worth journeying inwards.

Or he's become Schroedinger, in which case we have to wait for some special event or conditions. Maybe we need to send him a gift back?

Vasa seems (but you never know) as the type who is just a fucking terrible liar. She just shuts up entirely instead. Kris on the other hand, HAS lied to us and admitted it, as well as performing social maneuvers such as tactical application of guilt, puppy eyes and general evasiveness to keep information from us. Not to mention that she apparently has some guy acting as an informant on Vasa's father and what she just pulled with Ice. She really comes off as someone capable of a masterplan or two.

But I'm okay with that. What concerns me is I can't tell for sure if she's planning anything at all, and if she is, are we on the right side of it?

The way she kept her motives hidden during our initial meeting makes me think we are on the wrong side of it.

You are right about Vasa...maybe we should return to the topic next time, when Kris isn't around.

what if Vasa is also being played by Kris?
>>
>>30308273
I'd like to think she just did that because she is that obsessed with helping Vass and wanted to make sure that we'd think of them as friends and help them out. I mean, we could just be getting paranoid here and all there really is to it is that she's just a girl in the zone doing what she knows how to do in order to survive.

Ya, that won't go well. We don't have anything but suspicions of what she can do. We don't have reason to believe she's against us, we don't have any evidence suggesting she's the manipulator we speculate.

Trying to talk to Vasa about it wouldn't only be fruitless, she could be damned pissed at us for trying to bring it up. I don't think we have anyone we could talk to about this, just try to keep our eyes open.

At the end of it all, it's not unreasonable to think she isn't being genuine despite how good of a liar she can be.

True, we should definitely avoid pissing Vasa off. Especially if >>30308371 is correct and we are looking at the worst possible scenario.

Would be nice, too nice in my opinion. But hey, I'll be happy if everything goes well and we stay one big happy family. It's just not very likely in the Zone.

Ooooh, we should also teach Doggy to play dead. It'd come really handy when we're in a pinch or to act as bait...also look to getting Doggy his own re-fitted armor vest.

>Kris hatching evil plots

I like this. I've had my suspicions too, I don't doubt she's actually slept with men and have more than a few under her thumb. Definitely need to keep an eye on her possessions or what she does in her free time.

I don't think we should take any special action. Just make note of anything odd she might do. It's a long shot, but if we take a sudden interest in her unprompted and get in the way of whatever she does, she might suspect that we're onto her. It won't be something to worry about until she starts; IF she starts, making big moves.

So passive observation. Best course of action.
