You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

Slowly, you feel yourself coming to.

The dark widens out, gaining nuance and subtlety, painting new dimensions and shades of black. Everything’s blurry. You vaguely comprehend two or three seething planes of mottled grey shadow as walls. Different shades, blurring into one another, become tables, benches, speckles of light transform into windows set high above, and some of the cluttered shades move. These ones are people.

You blink, expecting your vision to clear, but instead a sharp pain throbs along the base of your skull, and the world remains a fugue of mist.

Something whirs mechanically. It’s warm. You can feel the steady, guttural thrum of the heating, coursing like blood through an arterial web of pipes and boilers. The smell of dried gore scrapes at your nostrils, almost interchangeable with the thin layer of rust that coats everything.

You think you’re on the floor. You try to move your hands, but they’re bound in thick, metal cuffs. They don’t feel weighty enough to stand up to your full strength, but whatever they doused you with in that apartment, it’s still clogging up the pathways of your body, relaxing your muscles and dampening your thoughts.

Christ. You remember that toothy grin. Kimura.

“Awake already?” The breath clenches in your lungs. Male voice. Relatively young. Warbling. Slight. “Can’t say I’m entirely surprised. Healing factor tends to mitigate the effects of anesthetics.”

>[X] “Where’s Urich?”

Lips are dry. Your voice crackles. You’ve got that nasty aftertaste in your mouth, that funk you only get when you’ve been out for a while.

“Where’s Urich?” You ask, another surge of pain snapping through your skull as you blink.

“The reporter?” There’s that voice again. It has a quick beat to it, like whoever’s talking doesn’t know how to pace themselves through a sentence. His footsteps light little searing blurs in your vision. “He’s fine. As far as he knows, he was dragged off by some mobster, and that’s all he’ll tell anyone when he turns up on a street corner tomorrow. No reason to do anything particularly nasty to him.”

He shuffles to and fro beside a glimmering shape you think you can roughly identify as a table. Lots of stuff on it, all out of focus. Whirring’s come from there.

“You know…”

He sounds like he’s about to start up a bit of a monologue. You can use that. Yes.

Kind of a non-sequitur from the discussion at hand, but do we know what corporation our dad worked for?

“…I had to jump so many hoops to get myself reassigned here. But when I saw the little flecks of genetic residue you left on Kimura, I just knew I had to. It’s like…” He stands still for a moment. “…it’s like I felt destiny calling me, you know?”

You shut your eyes, thoroughly unnerved by how painful that is, and focus on your surroundings. The blackness populates itself with a shifting miasma of colours, each one bleeding into the next. There’s a chaos to it that probably stems from your groggy condition, but you can pick details out of the haze.

You’re in a large room. Lots of metal. Chemicals smells everywhere. Nearby, a furnace roars. There’s the talkative man, and then there’s others – three other sets of lighter, shiftier footsteps, one nearby him and two others beside a rattling, metallic door. Roof smells of corrugated iron. And then there’s… something chittering quietly in one corner, breathing in and out yet hoisted up upon no discernable feet. What is that?

“You’re not listening to me, are you?” The voice sighs. “Look, I just want you to know, this is a very special moment for me. And I’m sorry about the eyes. That’s sort of my fault.”

>[X] “Why, exactly?”

“Why, exactly?”

Keep this guy talking. Keep him occupied with the sound of his own voice. You can feel yourself healing, your thoughts unclogging. You think you can even make out the hem of his long coat now, a searing line of shifting light spillage.

“The eyes? Or the special thing? Oh, Zero-Six, dear?”

You hear one of the others shift subtly, standing further up to attention, and speak in a dull, quite female voice. “I am Zero-Seven.”

“Oh? Well, be a dear and go get me my hydraulic needles.” Man, you don’t like the sound of hydraulic needles. You don’t like that at all. He breathes in sharply as the lighter footsteps recede to one end of the room, where a heavy, metallic door slides open. You hear the growl of the furnace rise momentarily.

“Anyway… the eyes are temporary. When I told her you possess the proper sequencing for healing factor, that warrior woman you met earlier went and put her fingers through your eyes. Sorry about that.” Oh Christ. You tell yourself you’re healing. You’ll be fine. But, god, she stabbed your eyes. “As for the other thing…”

He turns around. His heart is beating fast. Like he’s about to get his first kiss. God, you hope that’s not it.

“I’m going to assume you’re an orphan, no? And you were born with some manner of degenerative disease, no? And one day, a doctor came and told you they could help you, no?”

You feel sick. The image of Gaby and her half-real, half-deified doctor emerge from the swill at the bottom of your mind.

“A doctor called Joshua Green, no?”

There are quite a few people like gabby out there. But only one (as far as we know) of Dr Greens kids. If he is this exited about getting one of Dr Greens experiments imagine how exited he is going to be about getting Dr Greens kid.

This is a bad thing. What happens if we escape? Is he going to just let Dr Greens only son go on about his life? No he isn't he is going to hunt up down and find us.

Your heart skips a beat in your chest. You feel your bones shake and your meat tightening, hot, fresh blood churning faster and faster. What was it that Laura said? A hundred and twelve times usual speed? A hundred and twenty? More?

“You mean my father?” You say, hissing it out between clenched teeth.

He stiffens up.

“Hmmm? Excuse me?” You can just about make him out now, huddling down low, to your level. You think he’s staring at you. “You… you do look a little like him…”

He scratches his head and you almost feel the breath sharpen in his lungs.

“Oh, of course! Of course!” He caws excitedly. “I could never find anything in his notes on his Patient Zero, but there had to be one! There had to! And if it was his own son, then he could never, ever, ever leave it in writing…” He claps his hands over his head loudly. “Oh, wow, wow… I’m so sorry about all the eye stuff, really…”

There is a long stretch of dumbfounded silence.

Tap-tap-tap-tap-

“…You know, your father’s work is brilliant. I spent my youth reading everything he ever published. Even the weirder stuff, toward the end of his life, when he started going on about genetic prophecy… he was wonderful…” Okay. Okay. Heart skips. The twine of your chest knots itself up into angry, tense bundles. You feel that abject hate seeping through you. “…His work guided me in ways my parents, my teachers, none of them… none of them ever could…”

Tap-tap-tap-tap-
>>
>(2/2)

You can see the world in fluttering shadows now. Things are gaining weight. Substance. You can’t seem to do colour yet, but you see the way he grasps his own head, as of exalting.

“Oh, man, man…” He can’t slow himself down. You can smell adrenaline coursing through his veins. “…You don’t mind if I call you bro, or bother, or something, do you?”

Those guys probably actually are JJ's and Gabby's "Sisters". Since we are patient 00 and one of them is 06
>>
>>30330282
Maybe

They might be an inheritor of our brand of mutation, which means they could be just as varied as us (though to a lesser extent i would wager).

I think what has happened is our DNA has been implanted into others, and our mutation is natural.
>>
>>30330323

>>
>>30330323
either this or Johns older sister mutation was real and his dad used big sister to fix john and the others.
>>
>>30330181
Patient Zero could also be Joyce. It would make sense if she was THE successful experiment, who had superman powers but didn't show noticeable marks. We'd would be more of a relative success, with a lot of potential but noticeable marks.

I think an important point of Josh experiment was to reduce the noticeability of mutations. In this regard, otterlad Gaby was a failure. I think Josh experimented on Joyce, we had a dream about that especifically but then again it WAS a dream.

>>30330282
If this guy is a Josh fanatic, collecting his shit and keeping it in near mint conditions, then we might not be in immediate danger. He has a lot of affection for him, we should capitalize on this.

However, the description of how she acted doesn't exactly fill me with confidence. Drugged, perhaps?

Joyce had noticeable mutations. Her skin looked like it was made of porcelain. And Gabby looked human after her treatment. It wasn't until a few years later that she became otter girl.
>>
>>30330457
I was thinking that plus they're made from mutants. Solent green style, hence all the mutant trafficking.

Taptaptaptaptaptap-

Breathing fast. Lightheaded. Is this hyperventilating? Is that what you’re doing?

“W-what… did my father work for you guys?” God no. Pleasno.

“Oh, oh, no…” You can make out that curly hairs of his now. The glint of his eyes. The lithe forms of the women standing at the door. “I’m not sure your father would approve of the friends I’ve made… but I’m sure he’d understand. It’s all science, after all. It’s all about making people better, in the end…” He coughs a little awkwardly. His voice bubbles with excitement. “I’m Joseph, by the way. You can call me that. I make everyone else call me Typhon – that’s my surname, terrible, I know – but you can call me”–

Taptaptaptaptaptaptaptap-

Your head is splitting. Feels like a fever. Eyes feel like they’re boiling over.

“Are saying my… my powers are artificial?”

He seems taken aback momentarily.

“Most certainly not. As far as I know, your father’s research never yielded any means of inducing a superhuman condition until near the end of his life. Sad, I know.” He pauses, and glances at something over on the table. You realize the whirring has stopped. “You see, your father believed the X-gene was the future. Unlimited potential to manipulate biology. Unlimited potential to mutate out genetic disorders, to adapt against diseases, to fight mundane human frailties… it was always about saving people for him. He just needed to unlock the secret of that gene, the magic that made it do what it does… God, he was so lucky. An active X-gene carrier right under his nose…”

His breath quietens. It’s something like reverence.

“Destiny.” He says. “Genetic prophecy. Just like he always said. More than just biology…”

Taptaptaptaptaptaptap-

“…You don’t happen to know what company he worked for, do you? In his last years? He must have been working for someone. Someone with complete, perfect records… a perfect map…”

There are many ways this can go. Roxxon could have been doing Monsanto tier genetic experiments, or maybe it was involved with the Facility in some way.

As Typhon said, he doesn't know where Josh worked last at. Maybe he ultimately went with the Facility or similar corporations. If so, this new knowledge might remove any ethical reservations Typhon might still have.

Am I the only one who thinks Typhon is a pretty cool dude? I was diagnosed with sociopathic tendencies btw.

Taptaptaptaptap-

What is that? What the hell is that?

“Sorry…” You breathe out carefully, as if just the slightest motion could rupture your heart. You certainly feel like it could. “He didn’t talk much about work…”

Things are focusing now. You can make out the beginnings of blonde, brutally cropped hair on the figures beside the door – the door on the left, that is. The rattling one. It suddenly becomes apparent that this Joseph, this creature-man, has three legs, not one. He’s leaning heavily on a thin wooden cane. You can make out a disparity in his face, too – one of his eyes is a bright, unmitigated white.

He seems to notice you stare, and you think you can see something like a smile splitting across his features.

“Healing already, eh? Amazing, isn’t it? That wild potential? You’re only gifted in such myriad ways because of your father’s works. Adaptation to outward stimulus, mutation against harm, against disease… it was his hope that everyone could enjoy that kind of security.” He lifts his cane momentarily, and cocks his head. “That said, however, I’m rather more concerned with the unintended consequences of his work. For obvious reasons. You’re certainly a good sample, but the modification of your genetics is unstable. You’re incomplete.”

Taptaptaptaptaptap-

What the hell IS that?

You glance across the room, following the echoes, until you managed to trace it to one of the tiny windows set high alone the walls. A solitary magpie perches there, pecking frantically at the glass…

You don’t feel strong. But you don’t feel as weak anymore. You could possibly break free.

Should you?

Magpies. You see lots of magpies, don’t you? How did it go again? ‘One for sorrow, two for joy…’

Things gain definition. You realize that this isn’t some manner of secure government facility. It looks more like a garage, or some subsection of a factory, all rusted and corrugated and filled with nothing but stale, dead air. The furnace roaring somewhere further on into the facility can’t have been active in years…

The pair at the door are wearing some kind of bodysuits. You think you see sort of… plates… covering them, like muscles overlapping their skin. They stand in still, unquestioning silence. As you try to discern more of their features, the third one returns from the other room, carrying with her an overstuffed leather bag. You think they’re all the same girl.

“Oh! Fantastic!” Joseph claps his hands together, his fingers knotting almost as if in prayer. “Just set those down on my workspace, would you?”

With noticeable gusto, he clicks it open and begins rummaging around inside.

“Now, I’ve already taken what I really, really need from you… you were asleep for quite some time, after all.” He pauses, appraising some object invisible to you, and shakes his head. “Your genetics, while not fully catalysed, are the key to something your father, as far as I can tell, created in his final days. Something that refined all his wondrous ideas into a perfect alchemical jewel. Something that he refused to share, refused to leave any complete notes on. I’ve been an inch from perfecting it for the greater portion of my life, but I’ve always lacked just a few choice shreds of proper working material…”

He glances back, biting his lip hard.

“That would be you, by the way.” A huge – unnecessarily huge, surely – needle emerges from the bag. “Now, I have what I need, so there’s little point putting up a fuss. I’d rather like to take a few more samples, however. Redundancy, you know?”

He motions toward you, and ‘Zero-Seven’ advances.

You’re not letting that needle touch you. You’re not letting this creepy shadow of your father get near you again. You’re not letting any of this happen. You feel hot smoke coil between your teeth and fire burst through your chest.

You strain at your bonds.

The metal whines pathetically and twists apart. Your hands fall free.

Joseph turns back to you. His expression is still blurry, but he must be surprised.

“Oh, wow, is that some superhuman strength? Yikes.” He coughs nervously, edging back a bit, and raises his voice. “Kimura! Kimura Kimura Kimuraaaaaaaaaaaa!”

Shit. You rise to your feet, focusing on the blonde girl approaching you. She can’t be much older than you, outfitted with pale skin and bright blue eyes. Her stare clamps around you like a vice, empty of anything but unthinking focus. That suit she’s wearing really is like muscle – like someone made a wetsuit out of synthetic fibres layered it over her. You’re pretty sure it actually digs into her flesh at points, at her joints and around her neck.

Christ…

In the corner of your eye, you notice the two by the door detaching themselves from their posts.

>pass!

>(1/2)

You let the rage guide you.

Claws popping out, you dive at the dull-eyed girl, narrowly sidling way from a swipe of her hand. In the snapping instant between heartbeats, you realize she has claws of her own – glinting, metallic ones, grafted straight onto her fingers. You think you can hear them humming slightly.

A snarl leaping from your throat, you dig your claws under her arms. Her face entertains no indication of pain, remaining fixed upon you, the blood blushing across your fingertips apparently not bothering her in the least. You feel her fingers bite into your shoulders, drawing dark, painful red, and you heave her off her feet.

She spirals through the air, smashing straight into a very bewildered mad doktor, dashing them both across his table.

You run for the doors. You can make this. You make it!

The two other girls – and, yes, they are all the same chick – position themselves in front of you, lowering, as if preparing to pounce.
>>

>>

>(2/2)

And then… and then there is a screech like the devil’s own tires, and you feel the floor tumble out from under you, your legs suddenly failing, vision whiting out. You remain just in control enough to brace your fall, vision reigniting as you fall hands-first to the ground. The blonde girls do the same, apparently caught in the same sickening whateverthatwas.

Your head swims. For a moment you can’t form words or impulses out of your thoughts, before you gather enough of yourself to glance back into the far side of the room.

There, towering in one corner, stands… man… you have no clue what that is.

There’s a girl in it somewhere – you can vaguely comprehend a female form caught in tight, overwrought restraints. Her body is coated in some kind of mechanical cocoon, her head disappearing into a bulbous, vaguely cranial metal shape, little electrical pylons – or something of the like – protruding across its surface. Six spider-like legs heft her from the ground, mechanical joints hissing quietly as the thing unfurls from its perch in the corner, carrying its main ‘body’ toward the centre of the room. None of them are actually connected to the girl, instead terminating somewhere toward the rear of that huge apparatus obscuring her head.

What in all the fucks ever.

What the fuck is that?

Besides everybody can shrug off normal bluets (except for us, and normals). Also the sound. Tray not hearing a gunshot.

>>
>>30332650
Now now, let's be civil. I'm the guy who actually likes Broseph, but as it stands now, letting him live could mean a Kimura with JJ's adaptation hunting our ass. JJ is also somewhat disgusted at him, he represents everything he thinks was wrong with his dad - gentle detachment, doktors, genetic manipulation, ends-justify-the-means, selfishness -

I don't want to kill him, but I can see the advantages and the rationale behind that.
>>
>>30332644
Nobody wants to fistfight Kimura.
At least, nobody intelligent wants to fistfight Kimura at this point. Maybe later, when we won't immediately die.
The people voting to go for Joseph (I assume for most of the others, anyway) want to take him down BEFORE Kimura gets here. That way we don't have to deal with JJ-power-boosted-everything-that-wants-to-kill-us later.

>>30332748

And costs us a fortune for something we can make from scrap metal. For fucks sake 1 search and craft check gets you same amount of attack as freaking 9 Xpoints. X points are limited. We can get spider sense for same amount. Hell we can get invisible plane for that many X points.

>>

Technically, once we located the building where Ulrich was kept, there was no actual need for us to personally play hero anymore was there?

Since he's a perfectly upstanding flatscan citizen, if a mutie sympathizer. We could've just called the cops down on the place, even when we thought it was Creeper in there.

Or called our friends in the sewers, and told them to call the cops with that address if they didn't hear back from JJ and Laura in 15 minutes.

Or we could've updated Parker and warned him to call the cops for us instead actually, since our strays are on the downlow like us. Side effect, possible Spider-man intervention instead of cops

Speaking of that thing, it rears up onto four of its spindly legs, the air chattering frantically around it. The girl hanging from its bulbous centerpiece squirms as electricity arcs across its surface. You’re pretty sure you can hear a heavily muffled scream in there somewhere.

>>30332822
Support powers for long range combat. Eye lasers are mid range at best.
We can use human weapons to fight. Better than claws in most cases anyway, and we can get powers to supplement weapon use.

Remember Claws are 1 time per day shot. We are better off getting a shotgun or strength+scavenged metal sticks for trowing. We can be bullseye for couple of points, or we can get 1/day adamantine bullet for huge sum. And we need armor/health to back up claws.

Do you guys even think stuff taught?
>>
>>30332958
It's sorta like the samefagging insult. People aren't voting what I'm voting for, therefore they must be samefagging. It's like they never considered that there is no 'right' side at all, and all options and votes are subjective.
>>
>>30332988
Yeah i know about that, but the guy spoke so confidently about how he hates new people and how the tree incident was part of berserk mode that i wanted to see him actually prove it.
>>
Also Mother fucking phasing. 1 point to get it. 5 points to perfect it. But no we berserk and shooting claws 1 time per day instead.
>>
>>30333000
I say we get the extrapolative thing that makes JJ basically bullseye.

GEOINTUITIVE VISION
Requires: Level 4 Enhanced Senses.
Cost: 3
JJ’s visual perception becomes rigorously attuned to geometric patterns, trajectories, and pathways. He can intuitively know how best to aim an object so that it gets from point A to point B, predict the trajectories of moving forces in visual range, and know exactly the angle and velocity required to ‘bounce’ an object along a predetermined pathway.
>>
>>30332958

They’re on you before you know what’s happening.

They don’t claw at you, they don’t bite, they don’t scrape or twist or break. They just hold grimly at your arms, securing you in place. You strain against their slender weight, and feel the synthetic muscles spread across their suits flex in response, matching your output. You don’t think they can hold you for long – it’s taking the two of them – but they don’t need to.

The girl in the machine arches her back painfully, and the air writhes around you, a cone of distortion spreading across all three of you. You feel your mind shake. The girls on either side hold on tightly, even as they sputter and twitch and foam at their mouths, drooling all over your nice patchy coat.

It’s not a migraine. A migraine is hot, searing, bright. This is white noise in the brain. An absence of thought, diving into you like a scalpel, tearing apart any cognisant impulse you hope to form. You feel your muscles slacken as the thought-void chops and chops and chops your brain to kibble, spittle flying from your shaking jaw.

It stops suddenly. You feel your brain mush itself back together, and finally you can breathe again.

“Ah, yes, apologies…” Joseph is picking himself back up, assisted by a silent Zero-Seven. He motions toward the insectoid construct. “Allow me to introduce Sofiya Krasnov. And her various clones.”

The flutter of tiny wings catches your ear. Up in that far-flung window, the magpie departs.

Yea. We could go Bulls eye+phasing for next abilities. But like that would ever happen. We need disengage/defense (phasing cowers armor at higher levels, and is more cost efficient (+ huge utility), and bullseye+ strength cowers attacks, if we get some weapons. Hell we can trow rocks (molotovs and shit for armored people).

But we don't need nay defensive abilities anyway, since plot armor. Would be good just to go taught wall, become invisible, and climb to ceiling. Then get to roof and trow pieces of roof at enemies wile invisible, phasing down, if needed.

But nope frenzyed claw attacks, with no defensive abilities. O well.

Oh yeah, before I forget.

I was thinking of changing the crit system. Three D20's give you a lot of chances to roll that nat 1. Like, a lot.

So, I was thinking that you actually have to fail with all your dice for the nat 1 to make it a critfail. Thoughts? Think it'd make things too easy?

Level 1: Small claws/fangs.
Level 2: Claws can now be altered in size (growing up to 10”) and may slice through steel.
Level 3: Claws may now be modified so as to be heavy or long (going to 18” at longest and thinnest). They are highly resistant to damage.
Level 4: Your claws may be shot, but take some time to regenerate. They are roughly as durable as adamantine.

Claws are really not worth the points with the rate you have been handing them out Crusty.

YES!

I don't see what people are complaining about.
I mean, i'd rather go in a different direction, but claws look they can be useful too.

Bear in mind, it still wouldn't be easy at that point. More levels in Agility or ENHANCED KINESICS would improve your chances immensely.

He only just shouted for her. It didn't take you long to chuck Sofiyaclone Seven at him and run for the door.

>>30333789
Yes. If they were actually scooped out it would take a lot longer.

They still incapacitate us taught. We should get aether healing, or vampire touch tho. Do they stack? We should get biomass consumption regeneration. The more we eat, the more we heal.

Crusty, with the burns caused by Victoria did they occur because things got a little rough and she bled, or was it sweat or something else that caused them? And what was JJ's reactions to them?

>No, we will see them coming.
That's why I said "and levels in Enhanced Agility."

GEOINTUITIVE VISION 3 x-points
>we can see bullets

Level 2 Enhanced Agility 2 more x-points
>we can dodge bullets if we roll high

Level 3 Enhanced Agility 3 more x-points
>we can dodge bullets with a reasonable roll

8 points and we a bad ass
