Asteroid Explorer. Yes we are back.

The story so far: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/30232212/

Follow us here: https://twitter.com/MinCorpPixel

But I get that you lazy bastards don’t want to read through all this crap again so here is a short recap:

You are a small expedition sent by MinCorp, a huge, faceless, interstellar corporation (You name the price, we’ll rip you off) on a class c asteroid you decided to name Chiron. Although the Board of MinCorp had its doubts about this mission, and only reluctantly funded it, they agreed to grant you some resources for your expedition. After first troubles of showing any profit whatsoever (must’ve been your subordinates.. nothing to do with your decisions) you finally made progress and offered some unknown Crystal to the support carrier of MinCorp. They promptly demanded a steady supply of at least 3 units of Crystal per month.
Should you mine any more than that, it is up to you to decide what to do with it. Save it, sell it, smelt it, do whatever you please.

Last time:
You have encountered a new lifeform on this rock. Naturally you immediately opened fire and scared it away. It’s not the first time you had problems with strange creatures here.
Not only you had troubles dealing with hostiles, your supply-freighter was attacked by pirates. Min Corp decided to send a better armed vessel next time. There will be cutbacks.
>>
>>30347282
Your engineers discovered that the hazardous space-weather is slowly ruining your solar panels. For now they are still supplying you with sufficient energy, although energy drops have occurred more frequently lately.
Lev suggested to use the anorganic carbon that is found all over the asteroid to power your base.

This time:

Day: 97
>Resources: 18
>Current pop: 9 (2 Engineers, 2 Mineralogists, 1 Expedition leader, 2 Mercenaries, 1 Botanist. 1 Xenobiologist)
>Rations 14 (Max pop: 6)

Paroli and Sally set up the ordered solar panel, that is now used to power your newly acquired insect farm which already produces a huge amount of food. (Rations +2)

Dr. Rant, your latest colony member hasn’t shown himself too much. He is mostly sleeping in his quarters.

Archibald is still trying to figure out how to unscrew the bar in the lounge, but he gets distracted by its content a lot. While Rute, your second mercenary guards the tunnel with your Miners Peter and Lev.
>>
>>30347282
Yay

Tell the engineers to fix the solar panels.
How does Lev suggest we use the anorganic carbon?
>>
>>30347282
Some rules / information: We do what the popular vote demands, but you will have to roll (1d100) for important events / building facilities.

Every Person needs 1 ration per week. Currently you produce 5 per week on your own.

The Corvette “Sea Lion“ is scheduled to arrive every month. (next one at day 112)

What would you like to do next?
>>
>>30347327
Quick question, what's that building above the lounge?
>>
>>30347344
a electrolysis chamber. making oxygen and that jazz.

>>30347326
>How does Lev suggest we use the anorganic carbon?

I am sure you guys will figure something out yourselves.
>>
>>30347327
Fix the damn power problem by upgrading or fixing or building solar panels so we can get the bug farm working and feed our people

Also if I recall correctly the alien was back and we could see the eyes in the darkness and we were gonna call down our resting guard to help drive it off

Damnit, still have schoolwork, so I can't fully devote myself to this.

Do we have glass? Can we shield the panels without impacting performance?

I agree with this guy. Let's put our Xenobiologist to work on the alien blood, and get our Engineer figuring out alternatives to solar.

Archibald is on his way down to the tunnel. Strangely the crane indicates that his combat suit is way heavier than when he was lifted up.
Also, the bar in the lounge is almost empty.

Paroli and Sally started repairing the solar panels. But they aren’t quite sure what to do. Maybe because they where trained to set up things and not fix said things when they are broken.

We should increase food production.

Install more lights to the left, to be done by the free miner.

Have Dr. Rant study the blood in the tunnel, lab or no lab.

2nd engineer will start building a room at the bottom of the shaft. Defensible walls and a worktable. Upgrading to lab can happen later.

The Engineers finished the repairs on the solar panels (- 2 resources total) but they are not sure how long it will hold.
Paroli is very happy with her work though.

Archibald arrived in the tunnel and… well… lets say.. walks?, towards Rute.

>>30347688
OP, I think you might just want to throw out the whole max pop bit. We've been mostly ignoring it, and it's not like we'd be able to solve it without further exaggerating the importance of engineers.

Also, you should note if there are any plans that are currently in motion. I don't know if I still need to vote for my setup:

1 engi: solar panel shielding
1 engi: fort and workstation at shaft entrance
1 miner: lights to the left
1 xeno: study blood, use workstation later
1 miner: don't drown/fall in water
Rute: OH FUCK HERE THEY COME
Archibald: I hope you can still shoot.
>>
Maybe we should have some sort of emergency hatch installed to lock off the tunnels from the rest of the structure in case of a gas leak, or flooding, or....something else.
>>
>>30347732

This guy's plan is solid. I'm worried about the aliens, though. Two mercs only wounded one; we might be better served pulling everyone out of the tunnels and just having the mercs cleanse that shit.
>>
>>30347732
second this, i kinda like the max pop thing though
>>

>>
>>30347810
but it hasn't really done anything, and if it did, we'd be at game over with how long we ignored it.
>>
>>30347825
I'm guessing it's more of an indicator of how many people we could sustain indefinitly with the rations we produce

>>
>>30347825
these people will die before they'll be a strain on rations probably

We could set up an impromptu lab at the bottom of the shaft. Computers, air-tight containment rooms (doubles as an impromptu brig), etc.

We also need to set up blast doors at the bottom of the shaft and security cameras.

What are in the two additional boxes in storage right now?

Also if we're pulling our miners back out, then we probably want them on the surface harvesting that carbon for power generation.

Dr. Rant set up his lab equipment temporarily at the bottom of the shaft.

Sally is on her way down there to build something properly and more stable against possible threats.

Lev managed to mine 1 unit of crystal, in the safe zone behind the mercs, although they are pulling back now.

Meanwhile Peter is setting up lights at the left side of the tunnel. He can’t really see further than to the ledge but he has a bad feeling about this. Qui-Gon doesn’t sense anything.
>>
>>30347926
Send miners to surface or to the other side of the tunnel to mine carbon for power generators.

also get an engineer or two down to the bottom of the shaft, infront of the field-lab that the xenologist is setting up, and begin setting up blast doors so we can keep anything from climbing back up the shaft if it gets that bad. Have the mercs provide cover.
>>
>>30347926

wut

One merc should stay by the generator on watch for the aliens, the other goes to Peter to oversee the light placing

i'd say we have the miners harvest the carbon fuel on the surface so we can figure out what to do with it

Also once the first set of blast doors are complete, make another set on the other side of the main vertical shaft. That way we don't have to worry about any attacks from the rear.

>>
>>30348035
We don't just have ice, we have full fucking liquid water. Which is probably why there are aliens on the asteroid.

Anyway, I'm not going to feel safe until we have a blast door with firing ports.

1 engi: solar panel shielding
1 engi: fort and at shaft entrance
1 miner: Suck up the water, build platform/bridge if necessary
1 miner: Keep mining crystal, build platform/bridge if necessary

I don't see how the shielding is taking so long without updates, but we really need to get coal-steam plants running.
>>
>>30348184
It takes a while because there is no consensus. The shielding isnt happening because its a big project with only backer.
>>
>>30348200
shielding isn't a bad idea, but honestly I'd prefer the engineers to get down to the base of the area and build a blast door on either side of our mining shaft, preferably ones with firing ports that close and open on command.
>>
>>30348200
idk id say consensus is fortifications, lab, explore left side

build a ramp to get up left side im sure miners know how to build a ramp atleast
>>

or maybe just digging through that small mound
>>
>>30348200
So the shielding IS being done. That's really all I want to know.

What's your word on the max pop? Is all of our psych problems stemming from that, or have we been surviving by the graces of GM fiat?
>>
>>30348218
carving a ramp might work better. But putting the miners on the surface to gather that carbon we need for power generation where they're safe and their mining rigs aren't in danger of being damaged might be a better idea.

Sally, now in the bowels of the asteroid with the mercenaries and the miners, starts to work on blast doors to the right.

Lev is on his way up to mine coal on the surface with his trusty mining vehicle.

Your crew suddenly feels a close bond as if something has changed on the asteroid, taking away all fear and reigniting the will to move forward. Feels a bit like home. (It’s the flag guys)

Since there seem to be some misunderstandings: You get roughly 3 actions per turn. 1 for building and 2 for doing stuff. Or two for building if its only small things. Roughly.

I was hoping that the carbon would be used in making some other kind of power plant.

Also, just had a thought. Can't we harvest the clouds being released from the recycling plant's waste as something? Fertilizer? Fuel? Something? Releasing it out into the void seems very inefficient.

Well, regarding water, we have a lake that could potentially be pumped for water.

the batteries we're used to 'store' chemical potential energy. They combine chemicals, and you get electricity out of them.

Hydrogen-cell batteries do the same thing basically, generating electricity from the combination of H2 and O into water.

We can't just 'get' energy from water using hydrogen fuel cells. That's not how chemistry works.

Archibald is leaning against the wall, chanting some random song he calls “anthem of the asteroid”.

Lev has been prospecting some areas and found a coal vein near the surface. He excitedly tells you that it would be a sufficient amount of coal to provide energy for the base and he already has done the maths. It wouldn’t drain the oxygen you need for breathing.

build a coal plant under the recycling center. We pump the waste smoke into the recyclers to get every little bit of resource out of them before the final waste is released into the void.

Begin exploration down the western shaft. If push comes to shove we'll have to move forward, killing as we go, until we can build blast doors on the opposite side of the ice lake. Which is just what we may have to do. Move forward, scare the aliens with lots of flash and bang, advance, build that second set of blast doors.

Follow that procedure every so often to make the chambers self contained and safe.

I just thought of something. Op, would it be possible to get the small turret on top of the blast doors ? Would make me feel better about all those eyes.
>>
Is OP drawing this? Or is this some kind of amazing game
>>
>>30348509

Can we contact the corvette and have them bring some extra food, we still aren't producing enough to be stable yet.

We'll need a blast door set up on the left, as well as berthings at the bottom of the shaft for mining vehicles. We should also set up an airlock and a non-crane access to the bottom of the mine once the airlock is set up.

Lev is digging into the asteroid, grabbing any pile of rock with a high percentage of coal in it. He admires the work of Paroli and Sally although he seems to be having more eyes for Paroli than for the work they are doing.

Sally and Paroli aren’t noticing the constant spectator while they are trying to figure out a method of shielding that wouldn’t totally deprive the energy outcome. (-2 Resources)

Peter has hardly started exploring to the left as his eyes widen in fear and horror. A mass of pink meat and green eyes is slowly sliding towards the ledge. In disbelief he realizes that the pile is made up of many giant slug-creatures.

Well we could always give everybody a gun and have them march forward, clear out the aliens, get a second blast door built on the otherside of the lake.

Or hell, we could lay a trap? Do we have any mining explosives? Grenades? If we toss some timed grenades with blinky, flashy lights to attract the aliens, have them set up with remote detonators. Boom. Alien problem nipped in the bud. We walk forward, build new blast doors on other side of lake. Done.

Assuming we survive the slug things this is a good idea.

>>
>>30348912
no. no digging access shaft. There's too much dangerous shit in the mines. We keep access to the mines NARROW.

We're going to turn the central chamber and shaft into a safe zone. Armor plate the floors and sides of the shafts so nothing is digging into there. Plus we're going to get some fucking seismological detectors in case of digging.

Pirates are a problem for when we're more prosperous. We have enough crystals for the next shipment, but we need to armor up the shaft and central chamber. Turn it into an extension of the base properly, make sure nothing can dig into the sides or from underneath. A safe place to fall back to. Then we can begin focusing on expansion.

Is everyone on board with this plan assuming we survive the next few updates?
>>
>>30348903
>>30348912

This, secure the area. Miner will simply fall back (That shouldn't count, should it?)

If we have the materials, explosives that can be dropped down the shaft to be used by mercs.

Mercs move forward and engage.

definitely. I'm just saying that it should be priority 1 after this. Turning the space between the blast doors into a proper space for expansion outward into the tunnels. Secured against invasion by indigenous species.

For all we know the slugs are just really gross and not at all harmful! (ha! yeah right!)

Right now we focus on blast doors.

Then after that order of operations:
1) Build the expanded elevator system (say, 2-3 elevators up and down to speed things up)
2) armor up the sides of the shaft and the walls and floor of the area between the blast doors
3) Finish Solar panel shielding
4) Get coal plant running.
5) build another antfarm/bontanical garden?
>>

Archibald is really giving all he has. Probably because he is a hero, more likely because he doesn’t quite grasp the severity of his actions. He manages to buy sally enough time to set up the blast doors but got stuck on the other side. Sally hasn’t quite finished the opening / closing mechanisms, leaving Archibald trapped for now.

>ROLL FOR HIS SURVIVAL

Rute is guarding the door from the safe side.

By the way: I will be going in half an hour or so… just a heads up

So what should we construct after this?

Do we focus it on armor plating the mine shaft and central chamber?

Do we build that coal plant so we can turn stuff back on and expand out power network?

What about the elevators?

also rolling for survival.

We should shut down water purifcation for the time being and turn on the recycler. We'll run the purifier once we got power back. And we can opperate on our stored water for the time being.

Also yeah, I think next priority to build is the coal plant. It's just too important to get power up and running. Then we go about armoring up the mine shafts so nothing can dig in.

One of the creatures clinches to Archibalds face, dissolving it with poisonous acid… You imagine. Nobody is actually there to see it, he died all alone. Over the intercom you hear his last sentences: “Yer space-slugs are gonna die poisend by ma blood.”

Paroli doesn’t show any resistance when you tell her she will have to build the coal-power-plant all on her own. On the contrary, she is really excited about the opportunity. You didn’t tell her what happened in the shaft yet.

Sally went to the lounge to get some rest… she lost her second friend to the space slugs. All she wants is a drink now, sadly there is nothing left in the lounge. Her uncontrollable sobbing is heard throughout the base.

Rute is nervously guarding the equipment down in the mine.

complaitns and suggestions are welcome, but that doesnt mean Ill necessarily do it.

Also, the roll was 18. I left him outside to see if you can pull anything out of your sleves with creativity and good rolls, so leaving him outside was the better option between that and him sjust flat out dying right there.

as i said though, dont feel like I want to silence you.
>>
>>30350094
maybe build it under the storage area? I think that would be best. My thing is that if we ever have to deal with pirates, the coal power plant shouldn't be able to be sniped like the solar panels.

basically. If the players fail because of bad luck, then badluck should be the reason it fails in the game.

If the players fail because they were idiot in their decision making, then by extension, the characters should be idiots as well and thus lead to the failure.

Well back to business.
Continue with the power plant. As for two non-building actions get someone to study those crystals we have been mining compared to those we know about, and arrange a mall ceremonial wall paintings or something to honor those who have died for a faceless corperation's profit.
>>
>>30350396
Cermonial Wall painting should go at the top of the mine shaft. So all shall know who gave their lives for our glorious future every time they enter or exit the mines.
>>
>>30350461
also, can we build capacitors or batteries or something? Something to store excess power we produce to be used if there's a sudden loss in power for whatever reason?
>>
>>30350530
sure you can. Next thread, propose t. this one has ended.
>>
>>30350548

OP, just so you know, I don't like it when you pull shit like what just happened. It isn't fun, it's just bullshit GM fuckery that's designed to make it harder for us despite all our planning and attempts to get shit done.

I get you want it to be challenging, but arbitrarily fucking us over like this isn't the way to do it.
>>
I've been lurking this thing since the thread the other day and I just have to ask: Why is it every vaguely interesting quest winds up having an incompetent DM?

Some anon uploaded a pic here: >>30348912 for his plan, then OP blatantly sticks it somewhere else, followed by the latest shit all the players are whining about.

I have to wonder why anyone bothers. Which is a shitty thing to have to consider, since I was going to jump in before I got distracted by RL shit.
>>
>>30350702
I didnt arbitrarily fuck you over. The controversy was about having Arch not die quick enough. If you mean sally building the door to far ahaead, thats because Im stupid.
>>
>>30350548
cool. Just checking. That'll help with the power situation once the power plant is built. Probably should build it near to the weapon's locker so we don't have to worry about it being taken out along with any of the surface power supplies.

So, list of things we need to build in no particular order (besides the coal plant)

-Convert the mine shaft and the central chamber into a subterranean base of operations including:
>Armored walls
>short term storage for materials
>at least two elevators for personnel.
>lab
>Alien containment
>emergency weapon's cache
>repair areas for mining rigs
>Sonar/Seismic Sensors to detect the structure of the asteroid's tunnel system and to detect digging

-Emergency Backup system that siphons excess produced power and stores it away for use if power systems fail for whatever reason.

-landing area for shuttles and such to land, maybe even refuel using the excess hydrogen we produce

-storage for the waste materials we produce from burning coal and our recycling system. Venting stuff into the void simply shouldn't be an option, it's a waste of valuable elements that could be used for other purposes.

-some kind of security hub for remotely controlling blast doors, airlocks, turrets, and similar.

-additional food production areas. Can we construct another ant-farm now since we have the seed population to draw from? or does that require a full kit?
>>
>>30350792
I'm not one of the guys above, but just pointing this out.

Because you made a mistake, it took us an extra turn to build the blast doors (a 2 turn operation). So the slugs got even closer, to the point where being locked out was immediately fatal. At least, that's how it looks and feels from here at the sidelines. I'm sure that's not how you intended it OP, just how it felt from the outside, and why some of us are, to put it lightly, miffed.

That said, certainly having fun with this. I love city-buildy type quests, and we don't get nearly enough of them. Just keep this in mind for future alright? Mistakes were made, misunderstandings happened. We live and learn.
>>
>>30350955
I just wanna make clear: Im not evil. Im stupid. >>30350705 is quite right, I am a bit incompetent at this, this being my first civ game and all that, so I make mistakes, especially when I get bombarded with ideas from all sides. But tahts not because I wanna fuck you guys over (you do that for yourself enough).

Im just making mistakes.
>>
>>30351020
Don't worry about it. I was in the first thread, I was the one who got us Arch in the first place. I had a feeling there'd be something down there, I knew we'd need a good gunman. And he was, he was a damn hero. Despite what people are saying, I loved how you spun his end. Would it have been nice to see him live? Sure. But shit happens in life, and between a drunk, an inexperienced girl, and a panicking builder, someone was bound to die. Arch went out fighting, and that's good enough for me.
>>
>>30351020
No no! I get that. I know you don't want to screw us over, no good GM does, and you've been a pretty damn good GM so far. This is the first 'screw up' I've read inside of the series of threads.

But keep in mind, players should always feel like when they fail, it's THEIR fault. Either from the results of their actions, or the results of their rolls. Otherwise their bullshit meters go off and the fun of the game immediately drains away.

You're doing good. We all make mistakes, and frankly, it's so rare to see city-builder type quests that I'm worried about scaring you off even bringing this up. I don't want you to stop, cause I'm loving every minute of this. Sure, there's rocky spots, but they don't infringe on my enjoyment terribly much.

Just keep in mind people's complaints about what happened this time when something like this crops up again, and adjust how you describe events accordingly.

I think the chief offense here is that people feel like one of our favorite characters just died for no damn good reason. If he had just died because of the crappy rolls as slugs swarmed over him while he held the line? That would have been awesome.

The gates closing behind him because the engineer fucked up some wiring though feels like he died a meaningless death on some level.

That's where the chief source of outrage is I think. It'd have probably been better just to kill him off the moment the doors closed. Or atleast have had him swarmed and the doors shut because the assumption was by the other characters there was no saving him.

on the whole though. I'm mostly on the side of this guy: >>30351113
>>
>>30350243
fuck... I just realized out alium number just went up to 9. We're going to need to deal with that asap.
>>
>>30351020
Then next time don't tell people to fuck off when they try and offer you advice, really the only reason they would is because they care.
>>
This may sound silly, as I'm not normally interested in these kinds of threads. But is there any chance OP could set up a twitter or something for this so we can know when he is starting up?
