I am Monique Gilbeault, a man of style and grace. Not that it means much right now, as I am currently doing my best to defend myself against several men of a similar manner of dress as the one I dispatched just a few nights before.

Though I am confident about my own ability to make it through this thanks to the fact that I have you at my side, I'm extremely worried about my elder brother Matthias. Though the fact that I myself am in the middle of fighting makes it hard to keep tabs on him, it looks like he and the royal family of Kinsen have been attacked just like I have...

...I need to quickly dispatch these bastards so that I can go to their aid.
>>
You were right, it was definitely a mistake to show you off in such a public place. Had this been attackers like the Devil Child from the other night, I'd have been able to easily fend against their attack... but it seems that whoever is behind this scheme has specifically recruited Devil Children of Fire affinity to surround me.

Though your ice is enough to fend off their firey assault, most of our attacks are also being negated in a similar fashion... damn it all.

>>
It -would- be rather difficult to power through their ranks without your attack magic... very well, I will stay on the defensive. After all, I doubt that Devil Children can gauge their magical reserves in the same fashion that a standard magicuser can.

"Arctic Blade!"

With a swing of my sword, I send a wave of ice flying towards three of these Devil Children, but they act in unison to counter my attack with a blast of fire. Using the resulting explosion of steam as cover, I dash right through with your blade extended, keeping on until I feel a familiar resistance.

Energy from people of non-compatible elements still help to recharge the Sealed King, they just do so far less efficiently than those who share an element.

It's part of the reason why Sealed Kings prefer to select a master with the same affinity; it means they're collecting energy more efficiently than they would be from those with other elements.

As I drop their comrade's frozen carcass to the ground, the two Devil Children closest to me back away in fear that I'll do the same to them. But while I would certainly like to do so, trying to attack them would open me up to attack by the others. I -am- still surrounded, after all. Ignoring them, I duck back into the fading cloud of steam to formulate my next plan of attack.

No, I don't know the incantation for Morning Fog. But considering the situation, I kind of wish that I did.

They can't see me in here. And while I can't see them either, I can certainly -feel- the heat coming from the fireballs that they're surely readying to throw at me. I bet these fools didn't even think about the possibility of that giving away their location.

Keeping close tabs of the two heat sources closest to me, I carefully step backwards and form a hollow ice crystal in my hand. After tossing it in, I ready my sword and quietly run off to the side...

>[1/?]
>>
>>30363725

A splitsecond after the crystal shatters on the floor, I feel searing heat flying towards where it landed... now's my chance! Swinging as hard as I can, the mist parts as the massive crescent of ice flies directly into the two Devil Children who I'd lured into this trap.

With the same soft thud that one might hear from snow falling off of a roof, my projectile breaks apart as it collides with the two men, trapping them in spheres of ice. While one of the Devil Children ended up completely encased in ice, the other one I hit managed to escape having the upper part of his body frozen. Seeing the opportunity to capture one of these mystery attackers for interrogation, I rush in and bash him in the back of his skull with your hilt.

As I look around me, I see that there are three of these Devil Children left and they all have me right in their sights. While I may have halved their number, I do recognize that luck played a large role in that... I very much doubt that the same tricks will work again.

As all three of them completely put me on the defensive with their constant rain of fireballs, I find myself once again focusing all my attention on not getting hit... I suppose the safest thing to do next would be try wear them out, forcing them to use up their magical reserves on their attacks like we'd originally planned.

I duck down to avoid being hit in the face with a fireball only to be forced to roll to the side so as to dodge another one and then I narrowly avoid being hit by yet another one by inches which forces me to my feet so as to better dodge... dear God this is exhausting. And just as I myself am wondering how much more of this I can take, a sudden gust of wind blows towards me which sends all of the fireballs careening wildly off-course.

And away from me, thankfully.

Looking as surprised as I am, the Devil Child directly in front of me suddenly vomits blood as his torso... slides away from the lower half of his body. The two remaining Devil Children back away in horror and so do I, as none of us have any idea what could have caused that.

"VAJRA SPARK!"

With a crackle of electricity and the horrible smell of charred flesh, yet another assassin falls to the ground... while Gregory knows that he could definitely take care of every last one of these bastards himself, his better spells are too dangerous to use with his sister and youngest niece so close by. Thanks to that, he's stuck relying on Thierri to back him up while he fights with a handicap.

As Gregory prepares another spell, Thierri uses a massive axe to hack the assassin that he was fighting into a bloody mess. "You think this's the last of them?" he asks, glancing over to Gregory.
"I have no fucking idea," Gregory replies. "Celestino, are Lisette and the baby okay!?"
"You know that I'd sooner die than allow anything to happen to either of them," Celestino replies. "What about you and Thierri?"
"We might be covered in blood, but it sure as hell isn't ours," Thierri says.

Just like always, he's not taking this shit seriously.

"Any luck getting through that barrier?" Gregory asks. The doorway behind Lisette's blocked off by some kind of energy barrier which has kept them from heading back into the main hall where Nicolette and the others are, and they've been too busy trying to fend off the constant flow of assassins from the other end to try and take the long way around.
"The strongest fire and light spells I can safely use in this place had no effect on it," Celestino replies. "The only other thing I can think to use on it is blunt force, and I'm sad to say that my punches are nowhere hear as strong as those of your friend Vincent."

>[1/?]

>Reinhold pulls a Dio

Yes! Finally, he's actually doing things!

And I like tailwind as a gimmick style. Cutting dudes in half by clotheslining them.
>>
>>30364674

Gritting his teeth, Gregory punches the wall next to him. "I swear to God, if they've laid a single finger on Nico..."
"Cool your head," Thierri says, patting his cousin on the shoulder. "I feel the same way you do, but there's no sense in freaking out, you know? Let's just fight our way through and get to them."
"Of all the times for you to actually start talking sense..." he mutters under his breath. "Alright, let's do this."

After motioning for Celestino and Lisette to follow behind him, Gregory readies his sword and races down the hallway just in time for three more of those masked bastards to show up. Not one to be intimidated, he draws back his sword and prepares the incantation for Arctic Blade...

But suddenly, all three of the assassins stop dead in their tracks. With a sound of tearing flesh, three long red spears impale each of them from behind, piercing through the hearts of all three assassins just as they get within striking distance.

As their bodies fall lifelessly to the ground, a large man clad in jet-black armor with red ornamentation steps forth, his head completely encased in a helmet that doesn't even seem to have any eyeholes. No, "armor" isn't the word for whatever the hell this is, it's more like an insect's exoskeleton. Hell, Gregory can't even see any seams from where the armor could be removed.

"So the big scary boss finally decided to cut the shit and show himself," Gregory says, readying his sword. "I don't know who the hell you are or what you want, but you really fucked up by trying to fight me head-on."
"I've got your back," Thierri says. "Let's finish this guy off so we can get to our kids."

Thank you for your polite advice.

Have an assassin
>>
>>30364802

As Gregory charges towards him, the armor-clad figure steps backwards and holds his arms in the air, showing him the palms of his red clawed hands. What is this, the prelude to some kind of special attack?

"Whoa whoa whoa whooooa!" the black figure shouts in a familiar voice. "Uncle Gregory, it's me!"
"Giancarlo!?" both Thierri and Gregory gasp, skidding to a halt just before their weapons would connect.

"Sorry to surprise you like that," Alberto says as he and a guard step from behind what is assumed to be Giancarlo. I forgot that you hadn't seen him like this before..."
"So much for having it as a big reveal, huh," Giancarlo says, shaking his head. "Mind setting this to passive mode, bro? It's kind of hard to talk like this."
"Oh yeah..."

With a snap of Alberto's fingers, the shell that had been covering Giancarlo retracts into something similar to a black bodysuit.

"Giancarlo!? Alberto!?" Celestino shouts. "The two of you are alright!?"
"No thanks to those pussy-assed guards," Giancarlo replies with a scowl.
"What do you mean, these assassins were able to take out all of the guards who were with you two!?"

That doesn't seem right at all...

Alberto's the eldest son and a chill dude.

Giancarlo's the cad who's surprisingly decent away from non-related women. Also a massive snarker.

"It wasn't like that," Alberto shakes his head. "We were walking down the hallway with the usual escort of guards when those masked men appeared out of nowhere and attacked us... the entire escort ran right the hell away with the sole exception of this guy right here." he says, pointing to the guard who he arrived with.
"I- I'm not sure what's even going on with those guys from the Fifth Division," the guard says, obviously intimidated by pretty much everything that's going on. "This is the second time they've screwed up this badly..."
"What do you mean by that?" Gregory asks.
"Princess Luciana already put a bunch of them on notice for letting those guys reach the balcony the other day, and now this happens," he sighs.
"So -you're- not from that division?" Gregory asks.
"No, I'm from the Third... I was actually supposed to be stationed at the gate, but there was a last-minute change and that's why I'm here today."

This sounds suspicious. REALLY suspicious. But before Gregory's able to ask any more questions, two suspiciously unmasked men turn the corner behind Giancarlo, Alberto and the guard. As they race right at them, fireballs form in both of their hands... shit, Devil Children are involved in this too.

"Watch out!" Thierri shouts.
"Don't worry, I got this!" Giancarlo yells back as he runs headlong towards the two Devil Children. "Alberto!"
"Got it!" Alberto says, adjusting his glasses. "Giancarlo the Vermilion Nail, ENGAGE!"
>>
>>30364968
Considering that he asked Alberto to set the armor to passive mode, it could very well be that it's a collaborative project between the two of them, or even just something Alberto is having him test out.
>>
>>30365045
And here we have the BBEG, third division guy.
>>
>>30365045
>Giancarlo the Vermilion Nail

>>30365053

The armor being made of magic would also explain how Giancarlo managed to show up like that after a surprise attack.
>>
>>30365071
He could just be a mook having the world's unluckiest day.

If he's NOT full of shit, the fifth division in its entirety seems like it might be corrupt. Especially so when you note that the guys demoted to cleaning duty for fucking the Luciana situation up both attacked unprovoked as well, which is pretty strong evidence that it's a wider-reaching thing than just some villainous elements plus a couple inept guys.
>>
>>30365194
So question is who has the pull to get not only a metric fuck ton of half dragons and devil children but also an entire royal division?
>>
Crap, this spell is still hard to control... while you don't have any more problems with tripping over your feet while using Tailwind, you guess that you need to work on your fine control a bit more.

"Takamaru-san?" Monique calls out.
"Sorry to disappoint you, but it's just me," you reply with a weary smile as you hurry to Monique's side. "Kind of overshot my entry, though..."
"...well, thank you anyways. Be careful when dealing with these two, they're Devil Children."
"Devil..."

Oh yeah, those guys who can use magic without the use of spells.

"I guess I better be extra careful then."

There's two of you and two of them, so clearly the smart move would be to take on one of these guys while Monique faces the other. As you race towards your chosen target, you find yourself dodging several fireballs along the way. While you're not sure whether or not these things will explode on contact, you're still not about to take any chances.

As you get in close, the Devil Child gives up on trying to throw fireballs at you, instead drawing a short sword. As it ignites in a similar fashion as Karel's sword, you find yourself kind of wary... but then it becomes blatantly obvious that this guy's a total amateur with the thing. With little effort at all, you knock the sword out of his hands and run your sword deep into his chest. As the man's lifeless body slides off your sword, you notice that Karel, Reya and Natthias have finally caught up with you... just in time for Monique to finish off his own opponent.

"I'm a little singed and bruised, but otherwise fine," Monique replies. "What about you? I know that this kind of situation's about as far as it gets from what you're used to... how are your nerves? And are Sadaharu and the others safe?"

As the two brothers interrogate each other, you can't help but smile. Even though Monique's a total asshole, it's kind of nice to see that he genuinely cares about his brother like that.

Well, neither she and Marius nor Agnes were at the ceremony, so there's no reason she should've been here to be in danger. Assuming they're focusing efforts on this assembly hall, at least. If they're in the castle also, I guess all bets are off.

"Oh God," Karel gasps as all the color drains from her face. "My Mom's in there too..."

You want to run right the fuck to the castle and kill anyone who gets in your way until you're absolutely sure that Citrine's safe. Hell, it's taking everything you have to keep from doing that right now. But while Citrine and Marius are potentially in danger, Marianne and the others are in IMMEDIATE danger.

"L... let's not waste any more time," you say. "We need to go find the kings and hurry back to the castle as soon as we can."
"Yeah, you're right," Karel nods.

"I guess you have a point there," you say. While you're getting kind of antsy right now, it would still be a good idea to get as much information as you can about this situation.

Assuming that the guy who Monique captured even knows anything.

"Very well," Monique says, nodding. "Come on, I can tell that you're getting anxious about wasting time."

With that, the five of you walk over to the still-unconscious DEvil Child who Monique captured. After kicking the ice boulder over so that the man is facing upright, Reya kneels down...

"Hey, dumbass," Reya says as he slaps the man in the face repeatedly. "Wake up, we want to ask you some things."

Gradually, Reya slaps the man harger and harder until he finally stirs awake.

"Huh? What's goin- AAGH OH SHIT!" he screams as he ignites his hands and claws at Reya's face... and then Monique promptly slices one of them clean off. As the man screams out in pain, he stomps on the Devil Child's remaining one and glares at him.
"Try it again and you'll be armless," Monique says. "Not to mention that Setsuranka's ice is the only thing preventing you from bleeding out... I'm sure you know what will happen if you attempt to use your fire or do anything to make any of us angry."

"Don't bother making any unnecessary moves, do you understand?" Monique asks.
"Y... yes sir..." the man replies.
"If you answer quickly and don't waste our time, they MIGHT just hold you as an enemy combatant instead of having you executed like what would usually happen to assassins like you," you say. "So tell us what we want to know."

Scared out of his mind, he simply nods in acknowledgement.

"And I'm sure you know what'll happen to you if we find out that you're lying, right?" you ask.
"Setsuranka was just telling me the other day about what happens to blood when it freezes... would you like to see it first-hand?"

>"I was only in this for the money anyways!"

Which tells us a lot right off.

Who the fuck can afford to contract this many dragons and devil children plus the dozens to hundreds of men this would take?
>>
>>30366850
Half-dragons. And there's some sort of ceremony that turns people into half-dragons anyways, so they're not that rare and pricey. From what I can imagine.
>>
>>30366887

Well Granche and it's neighbors field armies of regular humans and staff their royal guards with them too, so lets not claim it's something you can pick up on the street either. A half dragon is still logically going to be pricey as shit and not something you casually throw around like this.
>>
>>30366903
Some dragon trying to stir shit up could potentially be cranking them out. It's possible.

I wish we knew more about how that works.
>>
>>30366820
How long has Celestino's son been missing from the royal castle for?

Does he hate his father enough to side with Ancoletta to either take the throne himself or for his older brother?

Did he hate Lisette and her children just as much as all of Luciana's older sisters?

I know at this point this is just wild speculation but it could explain the money and motive IF he hates them and has been adventuring long enough.

I doubt this is right but it would be funny if it was
>>
>>30366820

"Figures," Reya says. "Who's the one who hired you?"
"I don't know who he was, he was wearing a mask!" the man shouts.
"You're not bullshitting us, are you?" you ask as you pull out a knife.
"No, I fucking swear! I never saw the guy's face, he was wearing a fucking mask! No face, no name, nothing!"
"In that case, who were you supposed to be answering to?"
"Huh?"
"Your boss, the guy above you in this. Who was giving the orders, you have to know that at least."

Seriously, this was too planned-out to just be a random "guys bust in and kidnap the princess" situation.

"I... I dunno the guy's name," he whimpers. "S- seriously, I never even asked! But was a Devil Child like me. He had brown hair, wore glasses... I dunno how old he actually was since we don't age like you guys do, but he'd probably be middle-aged if he was a human."
"Any idea who he's talking about?" you ask, turning to the others.
"Nope," Karel replies.
"Well that's just great..."
"He was the lead Devil Child involved in this from what I could tell, anyways... the masked guys weren't under his command."

>[2/?]
>>
>>30366924
I'm betting it's the so called 'ferals'. I have a feeling ordinary dragons would care more about their offspring, half-blooded or not, than to use them as fodder.

>>30366850
It also tells us that with the exception of who his targets are, everything else told to him by his superior could be deceit.
>>
>>30366965

So it looks like we can suss out a command structure.

The guy in the mask is the top guy, and he's pulling the strings and funding everything.

The devil children are their own internal unit and the half dragons are likley also their own internal unit, and so are the mooks, with the traitors likely answering to the same or someone else.

This probably runs way, way deeper than we're equipped to handle.

If anything it forced their hand for when there's Thierri, Gregory and our friends (Nico, Sylvie, Monique...) here, which is a good thing. Imagine the raid took place after we left. The dragon twins were not supposed to stick around forever either.
>>
>>30367131
Or loving us, depending on how sure he is that Gregory would have killed him over the marriage.
>>
>>30367093
>They said that it had to be today since they had it on good authority that the oldest princess would be married off to the blue-haired guy with the Sealed King today!

Not many people knew that. The list of suspects just got real short.
>>
>>30367140

Oh yeah, it'd have been a disaster.

But think of it this way.

When someone hears of your plans as a leader, and their first instinct is to hire dozens of assassins to free your own family, there is a problem.
>>
>>30367147
Man, he doesn't know we had anything to do with that.
>>
>>30367131

I honestly doubt Monique would have accepted marriage without express consent of the girl, but I suppose that's for Archelon or Monique himself to clear up.

And this petty, bitter Monique hatred is getting tiresome. He's a dick, but at least he's not a traitor.
>>
>>30367163
That's the thing about paranoia, it doesn't need proof in order to start accusing people.
>>
>>30367178

He could also just assume it was bad intelligence.

It's not like they brought enough firepower to get the job done.
>>
>>30367093
Did Monique even know he was about to be married off to luciana? Either way, what, five, six people knew about that? That REALLY Shortens the suspect list.
>>
>>30367093
>the blue-haired guy with the Sealed King
who is standing right there and probably you know his name, srslywtf
>>
>>30367163

He's gonna ask why the plan changed. And learning that we're her new boyfriend is helpful enough to connect the dots.

>>30367165

I don't hate him, I just think he's an ass. But he has a persecution complex and will feel pissant for almost having the girl and getting robbed of it by, once again, Reinhold getting into his path.

>>30367196

Who are they, again?
>>
>>30367209
He hasn't learned that. Yet.
>>
>>30367093
So it really IS about the relationship between Marconetti and Granache.
In that case, maybe the fact that they used half-dragons has nothing to do with the plot. Just maybe.

Still, attacking while the Granache delegation is still here would strengthen the relation between two countries anyway.
>>
>>30367196
Yeah, but didn't the Assasins start this long before Monique came to Marconetti and revealed his dicksword, PLUS they had the stated goal of needing this to go down before the birthday before, according to Luci?

There's more to this than face value.

USE FLASH OF INSIGHT, REINHOLD! IT'S SUPER EFFECTIVE!
>>
>>30367234

The point is that information that prompted this entire fight was rather privileged and we need to find out where it leaked.
>>
>>30367196

Yeah.

What we know:

>They'd need to be in Celestino's inner circle to get the info fast enough to plan this
>They'd need to have the money and influence to corrupt an entire chunk of the royal guard with no leaks
>They need to have no instincts against working with dragons or devil children
>For whatever reason, they care about keeping the kings children single at all costs
>They somehow have the money and intelligence to organize this perfectly

There are maybe three people in the entire kingdom who could even hope to pull this off. Less if we get more intel.

>>30367234

It happened after Luci came home from rejection. She was obviously of marrigable age and the most important target therefore.
>>
>>30367093

"...what?" Monique stares at the Devil Child as if he'd lost his mind. "Why in the world would I even..."
"I don't know, why are you asking me!?" he shouts. "When Celestino knighted you instead, they switched the timing to after most of the people started clearing out of this place."
"So that's why..." you mumble. "How the hell did you people even get in here? Was it the crooked guards?"

At the mention of that, the man's face goes pale.

"Oh, so you weren't going to mention that?" Reya asks.
"It- it's just that-" the man stammers.
"If you're holding out on us, there's no reason to keep you alive," you say, spinning your knife around in your hand.
"GOD DAMN IT OKAY I'LL SPILL JUST KEEP ME AWAY FROM THE FUCKING GUARDS TOO!" he screams.

>[4/?]
>>
...? Maybe they need virgins of royal blood? I mean thats one reason they'd need to grab Lucy before she gets married off.

Still what sort of mask was the person wearing, could they tell gender? What about social class or nationality from word choice?
>>
>>30367247
>Anyone in the employ of someone like that who was listening at the door. Such as the guards with cleaning punishment.
>>
>>30367256

He's actually being VERY helpful. I'd go so far as requesting a pardon in exchange for his cooperation.
>>
>>30367247
>>30367196

>>
>>30367268
Not really, he's just proved he's hiding things from us still. I think he's fucked himself.
>>
>>30367256
Why is he so afraid of the guards?
>>
>>30367093
okay why were they going after her BEFORE the ball then? Monique didn't reveal the sealed king until the duel
>>
>>30367262

No no no no no

They were wanting to abduct the royal kids for months.

They were just pushed into action because they thought there would be one less target to acquire.

The general plot is old and long way in making. This attack was carried out on impulse.
>>
>>30367268
>Pardon
Not likely. Give him the choice between a painless execution and life in the dungeon.
>>
>>30367277

We haven't got the money or time to pull something like that off. I don't recall anyone of our group sneaking off regularly.

Besides, the dude is male, most of ours is female.
>>
Calling it, Celestino's escaped kid trying to save his siblings from the same fate.
>>
>>30367287

That may be, but as long as he's spilling the beans, he's an asset. And honor demands he be given some recognition for that. More than just quick death preferably.
>>
>>30367292
The Guards are neither half dragon nor devil children. They're Fae.
>>
>>30367299

If the information we get from him result in apprehension of whoever is behind the plot, I think a pardon would be justified.
>>
>>30367293
Luci is the only one of marriageable age.

>>30367300
I don't mean as the mastermind behind the plot, but as a potential leak. Luci came straight to us after Celestino made his decision, and that decision was reached with her being present.
>>
>>30367312
Eh I'd prefer he's thrown in a cell and we get more info from him. Hell even him getting killed off while in our custody could help us so long as its planned for we can learn even from that.
>>
>>30367333

I suppose you make a good point, even if rather callous and cold one.

Celestino's mark of approval

I suppose fate of the guy will be for the king(s) to decide.
>>
>>30367324
You do not pardon those who get caught trying to kill or capture the royal family. A swift death is the best he can hope for.
Most people in his possision would be tortured for days or weeks before execution.
>>
>>30367256
>"Why in the world would I even..."

So he wouldn't accept in the end?
>>
>>30367268
Naaaaaah, he's spilling under threat of horrible painful death, and even then he's still trying to omit details. That just shows he's not suicidal.

We'll let Celestino's justice sort him out when we're done with him, maybe they'll care that he was helpful, maybe they won't.
>>
>>30367332

>political marriages
>marriageable age

you mean she's of age to consummate the marriage. Celestino could make a deal with Elena or even Chiara if he wanted.
>>
>>30367256

"...what's this about the guards?" Monique asks.

Oh yeah, he doesn't know about that.

"The Royal Guard division that handled security here let us in," the man says. "They rigged it so that all the guys stationed here would be in on it and they let us set up beforehand."
"Oh shit," you mutter under your breath. "How many people are in this division?"
"I dunno, it's not like I'm in-"
"Thirty," Karel says. "Thirty guards in a division, one Captain per division. "And if an entire division's been compromised..."
"Do you know which division was stationed here today?" you ask.
"No, I only bothered to learn the basic chain of command since I'm technically above a Captain," she replies. "Sorry I can't be of more help."
"No, this is plenty of information," Monique says. "Do you know if the traitorous guards were in any other division?"
"No, they made a point to tell us the exact guard shifts and when the right ones would be posted."
"Do you know the number?" you ask.
"I never bothered to find out."

>[5/?]
>>
>>30367383
>Celestino and Co. hiding behind drapes while Rein and Luci consummate their marriage

You do know how medieval marriages worked, right?
>>
>>30367398

So thirty crooked guards, a dozen devil children, and an unknown number of mook assassins and half dragons, though the half dragons seem to have substantially more than devil children.

This'll probably get contradicted like right away but I don't think there's more than like, a hundred and fifty people here. That's still a LOT but about a third of them are likley dead already and we're ready to make a good push. If they're really this mercenary they'll probably break off and run once the tide turns anyway. Citrine and any other potential hostages are an issue, but we can handle the situation as it stands.
>>
>>30367437
Plus, how many dead devil children do we have so far? Pretty nearly all of them.
>>
>>30367437
I doubt they'd be at the castle at all. All four of their targets were right here in the audience hall, there would be no reason to spread their assets and increase their risk.
>>
>>30367483
>there would be no reason
To be fair though, 'reason' doesn't so far seem to be high on their priorities.
>>
>>30367483
At least two of the crooked guards were still at the castle, the ones that Gerhard killed.
>>
>>30367459

Oh yeah, at least half are gone.

Once we synch up with someone who knows the guard schedule better we can root out traitors and figure out their general area better. Actually killing or capturing these idiots with our current firepower isn't going to be the real problem.
>>
>>30367504

They seemed to be covering the actual exit route.
>>
>>30367512
>Once we synch up with someone who knows the guard schedule better
Like Luciana? Who also has ability to change guard shifts at will?

Personally I got a bad feeling right now. But fortunately I ain't ever right about them.
>>
>>30367398

God damn it, way to not know a vital piece of information!

"I blabbed about their plan so please keep me away from them," the man begs. "You might kill me, but they'll fucking torture me if you let them get to me now..."
"So you were hoping that we'd throw you in the dungeon until your crooked buddies broke you out?" Reya asks.
"YES I WAS BUT NOW I'M NOT HOLDING ANY MORE INFORMATION FROM YOU SO PLEASE DON'T KILL ME!" he screams at the top of his lungs.

Yeah, he's looking desperate. But you're kind of desperate right now yourself, so it's getting about time to finish this up.

"Are there any assassins in the castle?" you ask. "And keep in mind that I'll kill you myself if I find out that you're lying."
"No, that place is too dangerous for us to enter directly," the man replies.
"But the balcony wasn't?"
"Huh?"
"I was there when a couple of your masked friends tried to kidnap Luciana. How do you explain that?"
"...so that was you who fought them off? Shit, I should've figured..."
"Quit fucking around and answer him already," Karel says, glaring at him.
The balcony was the only place in the castle that we could have gotten at her," he says. We couldn't get any further in, there's too much of a risk of the guards who weren't with us finding us out."
"...but the crooked guards themselves are still a problem," you say.
"I guess so?"

Of course they are.

>[6/?]
>>
>>30367554
If Luci was that ambitious, I doubt she would've settled for Reinhold.
>>
>>30367582
>[7/7]

"Two more questions," you say. "First, what country are you from?"
"What?" he asks.
"You heard me. What country are you from?"
"I- I've been a wanderer my entire life, I don't have one!"
"So you're not from, say, Ancellotta?" Karel asks.
"I've never even fucking been there!"

So much for that line of questioning.

"And finally, how do we get through that barrier that's on that door?" you ask.
"The barr... oh, that," the man mutters. "They prepared that just for Celestino, all his fancy attack magic can't do shit to it."
"Then how the hell are we supposed to get through?"
"Brute force. All of Celestino's fancy beam shit won't work at all, that's how it's set up. They were gonna prepare a double barrier, but Gregory showed up instead of that gorilla man from Granache so they decided to spend the money on hiring more dudes... not that it did us any good."

Signed up for a very dangerous job, doesn't have an exist strategy, doesn't try to learn everything he can about the op and more importantly didn't figure out that if the guards might be an issue to learn everything he fucking could about them. I mean if he gives us enough info on them we can root them and murer them and he doesn't have to worry so much. Eh I vote we have Monny start icing his blood until he starts telling us what else he's hiding.

"Yeah, we won't kill you," you say as you put away your knife... and then punch him in the head hard enough to knock him out. While he might have a concussion after this, you did in face keep your end of the bargain in sparing his life.

What Celestino does with him afterwards is none of your concern.

"Well that was certainly informative," Reya says as he stands back up. "How long's that ice on his stump supposed to last, by the way? He might bleed out before someone can come and arrest him."
"That's right..." Monique says as he unsheaths his sword and taps it on the end of the Devil Child's stump, doubling the amount of ice that covers it. "That should last about two to three hours, depending on the temperature."
"Good enough for me," Reya says as he turns towards where the others are waiting. "Let's hurry up and share the bad news with the Princesses and everyone else..."

Nodding in acknowledgement, the five of you race across the hall, weaving around the dead assassin corpses that are strewn about until you finally make it through the boundary of the Sanctuary that you cast on Luciana.

As you approach, the Easterners that Matthias was with immediately crowd around him and Monique... it's pretty clear that they were extremely worried about both of them. Leaving them to their own conversations, you turn to the three Princesses (and one Prince) who are runnig towards you.

"Karel, you're not hurt, right?" Emilio asks as he runs right up to his beat (and only?) friend. "You look kind of beaten up..."
"I'm fine so quit worrying about me," Karel replies. "I'm YOUR bodyguard, I'm the one who's supposed to be concerned for your safety, not the other way around."
"What, so we're not friends too?"
"Dammit Emilio..." she sighs.

Both Marianne and Luciana seem even more worried about you than Emilio was for Karel... but you really don't have time for sentimentality right now. After giving the requisite assurance that you are in fact unhurt (mostly), you get to business...
