Rules & Char Sheet: http://pastebin.com/ZxSz1cae

You are Abigail Spencer Jackson, Knight Incubator. You have superhuman strength, durability, and agility, but at the cost of being the host of a Cambion, a murderous monster that will - eventually - kill you, using your body as a focus to instantiate itself and probably go on a killing spree. The only way to delay this fate is to kill other Incubators and Cambions.

You've just gotten home, coming back from eating dinner at your best friend Ned's house, and have the remainder of the day - evening, really - free. Your mom seems to be shut away in her room, as usual.

>See how your mother is doing. You wonder if she's even noticed you didn't come home.
>Call Richard to see how he's doing with his stalker.
>You haven't heard from Brian since he passed his police exam over a week ago. Call up your older brother.

It was mentioned in the first thread (in the prompts, you never picked it), then I forgot about it, then it was awkward to reintroduce.

So, yeah, you have an older brother.

Did he skip town to avoid dealing with mom? Heh.

Oh, well either way.
We should still get stalker advice later.

You knock on the door to your mother's room, prompting a grunt of acknowledgement.

"You okay, Mom?"

She grunts an affirmative.

"Didn't get worried about my absence?"

"You were gone?"

"I was," you say, rolling your eyes at her obliviousness. "I was hanging out with Ned."

"That's nice," she says.

This conversation is going nowhere fast. You head to your room, pulling out your phone and calling up your brother. You realize with a groan that he may not have been able to call you, since your phone got fucked up in that fight with the Ballista Cambion. Then again, there's always your home phone...

Whatever. You call him up.

The phone rings... and rings... and rings...

"Nyugh," he groans over the line, clearly half-asleep "who is it?"

"It's your little sister," you say.

There's a moment as he collects himself. "Hey, Gail. Sorry for not calling you, they're running me ragged down here."

"It's so bad that you couldn't call me once? It's been over a week."

"It's some stupid hazing thing," he says, clearly tired. "How's Mom? And that girl you like... Tara? Tanya? Nancy? Fuck, I can't remember. How are things with her?"

"Mom is...
>"Mom. Same as ever."

"Mom is... Well. Some days she's better than others. I got her to come out of her room to eat with me yesterday, but she didn't even notice I was several hours late getting home."

"Ugh," he grunts. "Fuck."

"Yeah," you say, noncommittally.

"Here's hoping, then." He pauses for a moment, and you think you can hear him moving around. "And the girl?"

"Her name is Tracy, and she's wonderful. She's just so cute, and she's all mine!"

You can hear Brian snort a little. "That great, huh?"

You ignore his obvious holier-than-thou adult attitude, and just smile. "Yep! We've been out on a couple more dates, and we are now an official couple."

"That's great to hear."

"There is one thing, though..."

"There always is," Brian adds, teasingly.

"Her brother. He's a fucking asshole. As I recall, within less than a minute of meeting me, he said he didn't want me to turn Tracy into a 'fucking dyke.' And that's just for starters. I've gotten nothing but hostility from him."

"Jesus," Ben says. "Have you met her parents? Do you know what they think?"

"They're dead. Her brother is her legal guardian. I don't think she has extended family."

"Ah, shit," he says, voice sympathetic. "Sorry."

>Mention your stalker. Do you have any legal options?
>Mention that Jim sent some guys after you. Do you have any legal options?

Options are nice.
>>
>>30412419
Second, but tell him not to go off and do something on his own. We're pretty sure we can handle it.
>>
"Yeah. He also sent some guys to beat me up."

Brian seems to come to attention, his voice becoming more lucid. "What evidence do you have?"

"Er... none," you admit. "The guys mentioned that I shouldn't have gone after sister of 'the big guy,' but he's explicitly denied it every time while implicitly confirming it."

"What about the assault itself? Any damage? Hospital bills? Photos? Witnesses? If we could get one of your attackers in an interrogation cell, he might flip."

"No. I just ran," you lie, smoothly.

"That's good to hear, at least." He sighs.

"Look, I'm glad you're concerned, but please don't do something on your own. I'm pretty sure it's handled."

He pauses, clearly thinking, and you take the opportunity to turn his attention elsewhere.

"Look, I hate to change the subject so quickly, but I'm having some other personal troubles. My last couple dates with Tracy have had an unwanted plus one. Some chick is following us around, I'm pretty sure. She went to the same movie theatre as us, I checked to see if she was following, and she also went to the zoo at the same time. Is there anything I can do, legally speaking?"

Your distraction works. "The closest thing would be a restraining order, but based on what you've said, you don't have any reason to be afraid for your health or anything. I don't know how it is for other states, but here, you need to be reasonably in fear of assault to get one."

"What if I'm reasonably in fear of her interrupting my hot make-out sessions?"

"That's definitely not enough," he says, deadpan.

"Damn. You aren't even a teensy bit grossed out by your little sister talking about making out?"

"Nope."

You make a "tch" of irritation. "You aren't any fun at all, Brian."

"I try. Is that it, then? Nothing more important to ask?"

Stalker advice time.
Admittedly Richard may not be having our exact issues with his stalker.

Hey, maybe you get a free stalker with every Cambion? Like a 2-for-1 deal.
>>
You take a deep breath, and call up Richard. Maybe he'll have more useful advice for dealing with a stalker.

"Yo," he says as you reach him.

"I'd like some advice," you start quickly. "I've got this woman following me on my dates with Tracy, and I want her to not do that any longer. I figured since you had your own stalker, you might have some idea."

He pauses, considering. "What's the woman look like?"

You give him as full a description as you can manage.

"Right, that's not my stalker," he confirms, mostly to himself. "Did she seem... professional?"

"No. I managed to figure out she was following me pretty quickly."

"She only shows up on the dates with Tracy, then?"

"Yeah."

"Did Tracy recognize her?"

"Said she looked familiar, but couldn't place her."

There's a long pause. "Does she follow Tracy when she's alone? Because from what you're saying, it sounds more like she's stalking Tracy than that she's stalking you."

"I don't know. I haven't seen her, except on our dates, but I don't think Tracy has either. If she did, I think she would've mentioned it."

"Well, you should probably ask her to make sure."

"Fine," he says, dismissively. "She's still following me, I still don't know what she's after, I'm still waiting for her to miss something or give herself away or otherwise let me know what her obsession is. "No, no. She shouldn't know that I know you, so I want you to make yourself a hassle. I'll go make myself visible, get her following me, and contact you. Then you find her, bother her, rile her up, that kind of thing. See what she lets slip. If she's a cop or something, she might appeal to that, flash her badge to wave you off. That kind of thing. So, you in or out?"

There's a long silence on the other end of the line. "Daniel is... eh... I don't want to speak ill of someone who isn't here. Let's just say I would very much prefer that you do it. I have a good degree of respect for you."

"Fine, then. I'll do it. Are we doing this tonight?"

"No, it's too late. I have a bad case of the helicopter parents. I should be able to manage it tomorrow evening. I'll tell you in advance if I can't. Right, then. If that's all...?" He lets the word hang.

You sit down with your homework, going through as much of it as you can stomach, which is actually a lot when it comes down to it. At last, your drooping body refuses to cooperate, and you put your books away, crawling into bed and letting sleep overtake you.

Your dream starts off pleasantly enough. You convince Tracy to give you a foot rub, and she kneels and does so, her hands alternating between a gentle caress and a rough kneading, as appropriate. She smiles up at you as she works, and you regale her with stories of you and Ned's childhood friendship.

It's interrupted by the image of your Cambion appearing beside you, massive form there. The dream-Tracy vanishes into nothingness.

"Your..." It pauses, searching for the word. "Stalker. You know she is following the girl. You care about the girl. You want to protect her. You know there are no other avenues to protect her, but you're still not willing to hurt the stalker. Why?"

>"I don't know there are no other avenues."
>"I was having a nice dream before you showed up, you know."
>"It's not something an animal like you would understand."

I personally figure she might be a cop, tailing Tracy to get leads on her brother.
>>
"You can't solve all your problems with violence. It frequently creates more problems than it solves."

"Then you solve the next problem with violence," it continues on stupidly, "and the next, and the next, until all your problems are solved."

"That's a very workable solution, I'm sure," you say patronizingly. "Besides which, I don't want Tracy to see what I am."

"Powerful? Strong? Competent? Capable of protecting the ones you care about? What is so terrible about that?"

>Write-in.

>"Okay, you can solve all your problems with violence, but it works better if you use some subtlety. If no one sees me kill her, they won't be expecting me to kill them either. This will make it much easier when I do need to kill them"
>>
"More like a bully."

There's a wet, incestuous feeling inside your skull as you can feel your Cambion take some piece of information from you. "That's a stupid word. A stupid idea. That there is something wrong with being strong enough to force submission."

"I could explain it to you more thoroughly, but it's pretty clear to me that you and Tracy have very different views of the world. I doubt anything that would please her would get a passing grade from you."

There's a long pause as the Cambion takes in your words. "Perhaps she is stupid."

You can't help but laugh a bit. "That's rich, coming from you."

The thing pulses in impotent fury, clearly wishing it could rush you and smash you against the pavement for that comment. "I'll enjoy killing you."

>"The feeling's mutual."
>"Implying."
>"Cry some more, you pathetic little piece of shit."

"This is by far the worst motivational speech I've ever heard. Are you even trying?"

"What?"

"You're trying to get me raring to go and rip and tear my stalker to shreds. Yet all you've succeeded at doing is getting yourself annoyed at me, and lowering my opinion of you."

"You've succeeded at lowering my opinion of you as well."

>"I guess it's a good thing I don't care about your opinion of me."

You scrunch up your face, and do your deepest, grittiest voice. "Oh, no, Abby? I hate her. She's too smart and cool for me! And reasonable and level headed to boot! God, any lady would be lucky to have her, but I hate her."

It just growls, and you fix it with a glare.

"Too bad that you're locked inside my skull for another year or so."

It contracts its length inward, like a coiling spring.

"At least."

That pushes it past the edge. It pounces on your, and as you fall backward, you awaken with a jerk in bed. A quick check of the clock reveals the early hour: 4:22 AM. You probably won't be able to get back to sleep.

Time to browse some image boards. /k/ is first, but you quickly grow bored. Maybe gun porn does a lot less for you once you see someone's face partly exploded by a bullet.

You lick your lips, though, because a quick hit of /u/ is up next. They may have some odd opinions on "forbidden love," but they post lots of pictures of pretty girls making out, and that's your thing, so you can ignore the weird bits for... what's this? Oh.

Oh Jesus.

Is that...

Yes.

Yes it is.

Okay, that's about enough of that. You close the tab, snap your laptop closed and get out of bed, and take a long, cold shower before doing anything else. Then you go pick out your clothes and get dressed. Don't need to apply make up anymore, which is pretty nice in terms of time.

You sit down at the table, pour the cereal into a bowl, followed shortly by the milk. Brian did it the other - incorrect - way around: milk first, then cereal. It drove you nuts. Fortunately, you no longer have to worry about that.

You eat quietly, and alone. Even if your mother wasn't trapped in the prison of her own complexes, you'd still be eating alone, given it's only like six AM.

Awwww
Oh well.
>>
You head out, making your way to the junkyard you've decided to use as your personal practice site for your Incubator abilities. Once there, you try a dozen different things. Ripping metal, crushing it, shattering glass. You even test out your invulnerability with a shard of glass, trying to cut the back of your hand. It breaks before your skin does, shattering in your hand.

In retrospect, perhaps not the wisest course of action, but fortunately none of the pieces did any damage to you or your clothes.

Next, you try falling from great heights, clambering up the towering stacks of cars and leaping off them, seeing how much your body can take.

It's a lot. In effect, your body is made of some kind of impenetrable steel. The effect seems to be concentrated around your skin, with it being virtually impossible to cut. Your innards definitely seem less tough, as some self-inflicted (not serious!) blows confirm. The force can still get through the skin, which explains the bruises you've occasionally gotten in previous fights.

You're running out of free time, though, so you take off at a run to school. You get there with time to spare, which annoys you.

Classes start, and you practically sleep through them in boredom. Except Spanish. Fuck Spanish.

You get to lunch, finding the table where both Ned and Tracy are sitting together.

You sit down with Tracy and Ned, who were apparently discussing "nothing important." While that sends your paranoia full bore for a second, you shake your head and refocus.

"I finally got back in contact with my big brother."

"Back in contact?" Tracy asks, confused.

"I haven't heard from him since the Wednesday before last. He passed his police exam," that causes an uncomfortable fidget from Tracy, was this really the first time you mentioned your big brother's new job? "And has apparently been working horrible hours since. So I called him up."

"How is Brian, anyway?" Ned asks.

"He seemed fine, aside from the whole hazing-slash-running ragged thing."

"Look, she's not going to do anything too crazy," you say, but fail to be particularly reassuring. Tracy, for her part, stops moving too much. "I'll protect you if she does anything, alright?"

Tracy bites her lip, looking up at you. "But what if you aren't there?"

"I've been with you every time she's followed you-slash-us, right? Now that you know about her, have you seen her when I wasn't around?" Tracy pauses and shakes her head. "See? I'll be there. She's probably only stalking you on our dates." Tracy doesn't seem super convinced, but she does calm down.

God, you just want to hug her and mash her face into your chest, holding her in your reassuring, tight grasp. Too bad you can't do that in the middle of the cafeteria. Well, you can, but the school mostly bans PDAs, so you'd get in trouble.

"Good. Now, have you figured out where you know her from?"

Tracy shakes her head "no," eyes downcast.

"That's okay."

>THREAD END.

This time around, I had a lot more "small, quick" updates. Have they been okay with you, or did they seem awkward and weird?

Also, other comments, criticism, etc.

The updates seemed fine to me. As for comments and the like, I feel that things are going kinda slow so far. The incubator stuff is okay, but mostly because the action scenes spruce things up - but there's no progress made on things like finding out what they are, where they came from, etc, nor even any leads to places we might figure something out. Similarly, the mom stuff isn't really going anywhere (understandable given the nature of that subplot), Abby and Tracy are moving slowly, and there has been no real opportunity to deal with Jim.

I mean, it's fine for all of these individually to go this slow, but it should be because we're spending time dealing with something else important, not wasting updates browsing 4chan or doing a training montage for no particular reason. Other than approaching the church for the healer (which was still a sub-plot, and one that's currently entirely on ice depending on their making contact again) there doesn't seem to be much progress in any way.

Thanks for running! Seemed kinda slow today, but I guess it wasn't that bad based on overall # of replies...

Yeah.

I suck at pacing, at least in quests. It's so awful to write like this: no editing, no jumping ahead, nothing. I have to write one clump, then the next chronological clump, then the next. I can't (read: don't) really pre-plan that much, and have to come up with shit on the fly. Which, often I don't come up with anything worthwhile.

I'm trying to push through as many subplots as possible now, to try to make things go faster. Thus Richard's stalker coming back up, Brian being mentioned as existing for the first time in sixteen threads, etc. Should be bringing the Healer forward in an in-game day or two.

There are a lot of things I would do differently if I was doing this all over again.

I think the ending will probably wind up happening soon, because otherwise the quest will just run in circles. Wrap up as many little plot threads as possible, then do something big, then end.

It won't be a total "everything's solved" ending, but I hope it'll be a satisfying enough (non-cliffhanger) "events continue from here" ending.

I think the past two or so threads have been a lot better, so it's moving in the right direction at least. I definitely understand you wanting to end it somewhat soon, even if I feel certain subplots will be kind of pointless (like the Healer, if she'll only be important for a few threads towards the end) and the main plot might seem rushed if we go more than half the quest discovering jack shit, then suddenly everything happens at once. But hey, learning experiences are nice too! And it's not like there's nothing good about the quest, I quite like Abby, Tracy, Richard and Ned (even if the others are a bit sparsely characterized), the setting seems cool, and the action scenes are actually very nice IMO compared to most quests.

Awww
I had obligations today, but this is definitely one of my favorite quests! I no longer have a perfect attendance record for them. Sad to see that you're thinking of bringing it to an end, hopefully you'll run some quests in the future?

Fuck it, might as well. The following spoiler contains information on something that MIGHT have been part of the ending, but definitely won't be now. If you're the sort of person who doesn't like to know that sort of thing in advance... well, don't read the following spoiler text.

Where do Incubators come from? Why do they exist? I dunno. I have notes on the in-universe attempts to reason them out, and extensive notes on how Cambions and Incubators actually work, but as to why? All I have is in-universe hypotheses, and what their individual failings were.

If this quest ran to 150 threads or whatever [mental cringing intensifies] I would have tried to come up with a satisfactory answer and provided a way to get to it. I didn't in advance, which was probably stupid, but, well. There you have it. The climax will not involve discovering the monster god that makes baby monsters (or the hive of monster gods, or however they work or for what purpose).

Sorry if that feels unsatisfying.

Maybe. I'm considering doing a one-shot with a more expanded combat system (more PC abilities). If I do run a long-running quest again... well, I'll inspect my failures with this one and try to correct them.
>>
>>30421408
Eh, it's fine I think. The story can work as a more character-focused one anyway.
>>
>>30421408
Your failures are minor, in my eyes at least. Just finished reading the thread and it was another good one, even without me.

I was completely unnecessary :(
>>
>>30421581
But I'm sure at some point in another thread something else would have won if you weren't there to safeguard the quest, anon!
>>
>>30421883
There was that time last thread when it was a four-way split and two of them were yandere shit. Whoever voted "Ned" was a godsend.
>>
>>30421883
You're right!
Phew, I feel secure in my importance once again! Thanks anonymous stranger!

THAT WAS ME!
