You are Whitefang, Leader of Shadows, a nightmare of the woods. You and your pack allied with Alicea, the homunculus, and Cailan, Champion of the Arena, to fight off Captain Abirami and his men. The invaders set the forest ablaze in order to kill Nadel, die Verdrehte and Caecilia, the Beautiful. The dominus of the villa gave Cailan his freedom, and you freed Alicea from Caecilia. All of you are in the shadow of The Serpent.

„I thought the Serpent was supposed to still be hibernating through this year,“ Alicea says as you and your pack begin to back away from the corpse of Captain Abirami.

„I guess it didn’t agree with that. I’m getting out of here as fast as I can. I don’t recommend going north,“ Cailan says as he starts jogging back to the road through the woods.

„Was it Nadel’s death? Did the Punics do something to draw it out?“ Alicea whispers as you look around the burning forest.

“Alicea, what is this serpent? Friend? Foe?” you ask as you start trotting after Cailan, you pack close behind.

“I’m afraid I don’t really know all that much. But it is powerful. It is no mere local legend. People for leagues around know of him specifically, and all of the Republic and beyond believes in such monsters beyond the maps. On the bright side, Nightmare tend to get along with one another, but that’s up to your egos,” Alicea responds.

“So we should be safe?”

Alicea laughs. “Only if he decides he’d rather attack the people who woke him up.” The Serpet passes overhead again, the beat of its wings sending shocks through the flames on either side of you. Schatten is growling and has his tail between his legs. His mane is raised up and he’s scanning for the Serpent, but staying close to your side.

You join Cailan on the main road, he’s looking between the path back to the villa, and the path leading to the army. “So you’re following me?”

“Depends on what the plan is now. Where are you going?” you ask as you prowl around him.

“I’m going home. I’ll make a run for the coast and get a ship to take me around the Alps, so I can return to my people,” Cailan explains as he watches the sky.

“You were from the hill tribes? They may be your people, but they live in squalor. You could have so much more in the arena. With the right legends,” Alicea adds.

“Legends die young, don’t you know? I have my rudis, I wish to leave this life behind, even if it means becoming a mere farmer again,” Cailan answers. “Can’t stay here though,” he says as he starts down the road towards the army.

Cailan starts running down the dirt road and you follow behind him. “Are you sure this is a good idea?” Alicea asks. You can sense some discomfort and unease from your pack. The Serpent seems to be closing in on you as well.

“Not particularly, but he seems to be our only ally. We can’t really stay in this territory, with the forest ablaze,” you respond as the group approaches the stone bridge over the river. Rather than continue along the road and to the army, he turns and leaps over the side of the bridge. He lands in the frigid water and starts running downstream. The brush on either side has already smothered out in ashes, and he run along the bank where he can.

You follow behind until the great beast swoops overhead, the force from his wings nearly knocking you to the ground, and flaring fires deep in the woods. “He has come for us!” Cailan shouts as he draws both of his swords and watches the skies.

“Hide yourself,” Alicea urges as your pack runs from the river bank. Then blast after blast of air buffets the clearing, and the Serpent alights upon a charred and gnarled oak. Its scales are a dark green with hints of red, and its body is long enough to coil from tree top to treetop, crushing the smaller branches.

“So there is one who does not run from me?” the serpent asks as he stretches his neck down to look at Cailan.

“Back with you demon. I have no wish to fight you,” the gladiator shouts.

“Oh, and a little nightmare whelp is here as well. How novel for the two of you to travel together like this,” he says as he changes his attention to you.

“Legends attract, no?” you ask as you pace a bit farther away from him, circling nearer your pack.

“That we seem to do, and yet there aren’t very many of us. Do either of you know why that is?” the Serpent asks as smoke begins to trickle from his mouth like saliva. You hold your tongue, lest something slip, and Cailan provides no answer of his own. The serpent grins and pulls his head back above the trees.

The Alicea speaks up, “It’s because we kill each other, lest our power wane, or worse, be stolen by another.”

“Good answer, which of you said that?” the Serpent asks, leaning back down to look.

“I did,” she answers as she extends from your shadow to sit upon the bank.

“And what manner of being are you? You are unlike that ghost among the goats, unlike the spirits of trees, yet you do not reek of your own nightmare like this wolf. So what are you?” the serpent asks as he leans closer and closer.

“Let us leave in peace Serpent,” Cailan demands.

The Serpent snarls and snaps his jaws at the man, unafraid of the steel blades poised at his face. “Wait your turn woman,” he snarls before turning back to Alicea.

“I am but a shadow of Whitefang, nothing more,” she says quietly.

“I saved her, she asked for my help,” you growl at the serpent.

“Is that what you believe to be true? Then I suppose it might be, but then who knows?” the Serpent says as he grins at you.

“No, it’s true. I sought him out and asked for his help. I even got his most precious pack mate killed in the process. This wasn’t how it was supposed to end up, but became my only avenue of survival,” Alicea explains.

“How curious, and novel,” the serpent says as he flicks his tongue out into the air, lapping smoke across the water. “Now which of you can tell me why I’ve woken up? It seems that in my slumber, my people have fled from their homes somewhat. I would assume it is because of this new pack of humans, but you know what they say about assumptions.”

“We know nothing of you, how could we answer you?” Cailan responds, pointing his right blade at the beast.

“I do not know you know nothing, do I? Perhaps I do, but I think it might be best for your escape if I do not pursue you, so you would wish to find some solution that pleases me, no?” the serpent asks. “If it helps you in the least, I am Taurini, the Serpent, and I used to consume a dozen dozen sacrifices every year, offered up willingly by the people of this land, when everything was still wild and free. Now it is as you see, and I must hunt for my food. If I must hunt, I’d prefer to hunt the pests of my territory. Are either of you pests?”

Cailan said not to go north.

I'm not clear on the orientation of everything relative to other things.

Like the river and the hill we started at, and then Schatten's territory, where were those relative to the Villa and Nadel?

Is north uphill to higher mountains, presumably where the Serpent slept?
>>
>>30414752
>this is a one way conversation, would be better if you answer some of our questions ?

“Pests? We are no pests, these are our homes, and we are being forced from them. The invading humans are the ones sowing chaos and destruction. They seek out the legends of the land and slay them with fire and steel. First they came for Treebark, the bear, then they came for me. Now they have come for Nadel, Caecilia, and Cailan, and they will come for you soon enough,” you explain.

“Who are you, young wolf?” Taurini asks, his gaze lingering on you.

“I am Whitefang, Leader of Shadows, and I have been killing all they send after me.”

“And what do they believe you capable of?”

Before you can open your mouth, Alicea cuts you off. “Don’t answer him. If you know a legends powers, you can deduce their weaknesses. We’re all braggarts and liars, until we are of the same pack.”

“How shrewd, but far from novel,” Taurini says, his eyelids drooping down a bit.

“If you want answers from us, are you not obliged to give us some of ours?” you say, catching the beast’s eye again.

“How daring. You act as though we are on equal footing, even when I sit on the trees above you. If you have questions, I’m sure I have answers, but why should I give them to you? Knowledge is power after all. Perhaps if you told me a new riddle? Or answered one of mine?”

Cailain laughs and and Alicea groans. “So that legend was true afterall” she says.

Taurini swings his massive head to face the two of them and flames dart out from between his teeth. “Would you prefer I end the lot of you now?” he asks, staring at them, but receiving now answer. “As I thought.”

“I’m listening little wolf, and there had better be a satisfying answer to this one. I am tired of questions about pockets,” he says as he climbs down from the tree to look you evenly in the eye.

“What ends stars, and serpents alike? But never touches deer?”

“Interesting,” the serpent says as he twists his head around to look at you. “A bit prying about me, don’t you think? But an acceptable riddle nonetheless. I don’t think I’ll need but a moment to find the answer,” he says, grinning at you.

“It’s the morning’s first ray of light, isn’t it?”

>Response?

Well. Let's see if he doesn't throw a tantrum if he's told he's wrong.

Yeah that's it.

>>

>>30416822
>>30416852

Maybe give him another chance? Tell him that the morning light usually doesn't do much to the serpents.
>>
>>30416852
It's a riddle, all things are fair play in a riddle. Though it is amusing how a wolf with like a week of experience of speaking full sentences beats an ancient dragon at wordplay.
>>
>>30416914
yeah, that was bugging me too
>>
>>30416787
Well actually i guess it needs a prelude, i withdraw. Just say "Not quite."

>>30416910
yeah at least say, i don't see what that has to do with serpents.
>>
>>30416914
You're implying heavily that his answer is %100 correct

The first ray of morning light will end stars of course
the first ray will of course not reach anything on the ground compared to a dragon in the sky
And if there's something about his legend that makes it off him, his answer is better than wordplay
>>
>>30416932
yeah that was something that occurred to me.

and then i remembered that technically we're speaking Latin, so the riddle would have to be pretty different to handle that noun declension. so it's doubly hilarious.
>>
>>30416643
I hate you so much right now.
>>
>>30416985
it would have been hilarious if the answer to our riddle was just a bark
>>
So are you going to tell him your answer? or to guess again? or what?
>>
>>30416932
Hey, it's good fable material. Upstart wolf learns words and tricks and old legend with a bit of wordplay. I'd say it makes even more sense because sounds are still new to him, while someone more accustomed to language would overlook the obvious answer
>>
>>30417030

“It is, right?” Taurini asks, grinning.

“Whitefang, stop,” Alicea urges, but you’ve already started talking.

“Maybe I should give you another chance. After all, how does morning light end serpents?” you say.

“Clearly you haven’t heard of me then, but that begets the question of why you posed this riddle, because I gave you the best answer to it,” Taurini asks.

“The answer is the sound s,” you say, grinning slightly. Taurini stares at you. “Comes at the end of stars and serpents, not deer.”

“Another!” the serpent roars as he raises up one of his claws and smashes it into you, swatting you against the river bank like a piece of debris. “I demand another, and none of your foolish trickery.”

So it's safe to assume the Serpent has some kind of weakness to light/dawn, given his answer to our riddle?
>>
>>30418947
Probably safe to say yeah. He's fine in the daylight, so he's only vulnerable to the *very* first light.

So he probably doesn't come out of his cave at night at all, just to be safe.

We'd have to distract him *very* hard to keep him outside another 22 hours.

tfw Romulus probably rolled with your riddle to invent a weakness that fit the stars part too

“Trickery? Forgive me but this tongue is new to me. I assumed trickery was the aim of such games. Maybe you can show me how it's done?” you offer the Serpent as you slowly get back to your feet from the ice and mud.

The beast snorts a belch of fire at you and you jump back. “Easy Whitefang, you’re not the only one riding this body, remember?” Alicea whispers. “He has only mastered speech for a few days now, you’ll have to forgive him,” she says.

“Fine then, puny creature. I shall show you a proper riddle,” Taurini declares as he climbs back into the trees. “I grow when the mighty slumber. Where I lay, nothing dares run. But should I break, I make sure that I’m in good company.”

As you think, you glance around the river bed, and notice that Cailan is nowhere to be seen.

You sit down and think, watching the Serpent twist between the trees. He hasn’t noticed that Cailan ran, or he doesn’t care. He also doesn’t seem to have noticed that your pack is lurking nearby. “Why did you engage him in riddles? You have a being of knowledge tied to your skin, yet your mouth still moves faster. If your mouth hadn’t saved my life, I’d be looking for a way to shut it back up, I swear,” Alicea mumbles.

“Watch yourself. I’ll be fine. And you can’t do riddles?”

“Riddles don’t make sense? Okay? These obscure references could mean a dozen things and how the hell is anyone supposed to tie them together? It’s absurd!” she shouts back. “He could be talking about ice, famine, morale, dams, fear, hunger, anything!”

“Oh, glad she’s not tied to my shadow,” Taurini says with a bit of a laugh. “Now, do you have an answer for me?”

“I need a moment yet,” you respond as you sit down in the mud.

“Well do hurry. I have business to attend to after this. If what you said earlier is true, then I should go pay some humans a visit,” the Serpent responds.

“He stands no chance of getting it correct you know. He’s just a wolf,” Alicea states.

Before the beast can say anything, you raise your head. “It’s ice.”

Taurini smiles and tilts his head. “Really now?” he asks, pulling back into the trees. He lunges out and lands on the frozen river bank, smashing through the snow bank in front of you. “Are you sure?”

>>30420019

i meant more the 'narrator' was laying a hint though, but snow banks don't really 'break' and don't ensure anyone joins them when they get demolished or something. so it's still not likely.
>>
“Yes,” you answer.

Taurini smiles. “Close, but wrong. Ice does form in winter, when the mighty slumber, such as myself. And only the truly desperate run across ice. But look around yourself. Where is the good company of the broken ice?” the serpent asks. “The correct answer is an ice dam. It grows in winter, no one runs across it, it even stops the running of a river. And should the dam break, all the water comes rushing out, carrying the ice with it, and killing all those in its way.”

“No questions from you ittle wolf. Your riddle did not amuse me, and you did not entertain me with mine. But you were close and you tried, for that, I will leave you be. Perhaps we’ll meet again. The little things in the world have a habit of surviving the tides of change. And you are such a very little thing,” Taurini says as he rears up on his hind legs and starts buffeting the air with his wings.

“Maybe next time you’ll be talking to a dragon slayer instead, come to slay you. If so, I hope you rip his heart out for me,” he shouts as you back away from the waves of wind.

Your pack prowls out of the woods to your side as the Serpent takes his leave. You look over as Alicea jumps over to Schatten, and the flames in your eyes die out to appear on him. His teeth are bared and he’s growling with nearly every breath, but his tail is still between his legs. “that’s the thing that killed Seraph, and gave me my legend. I was waiting for you to attack him, so that we might kill the foul thing together.”
