Interlude: LAMAZE DOESN'T WORK FOR CATS

Your breathing is heavy and strained, your panting and bristling. Koyomi falls upon you as the madman lets the white crackling heat still coursing through your small body trail off. It hurts, it hurts so badly. You worry for the girl, so effortlessly throwing herself over you, you can see the tears welling up in her eyes.

He's laughing, spouting off something; about his hostages no doubt, but you can't hear him. You can barely hear the distraught girl shouting above you as your eyelids struggle to remain open. He begins drawing off more power from the broken halogen above. This isn't it. It can't be.

He whips a hand forward and again the peel of thunder sounds. White arcs explode from his finger tips and lance forward before the sound hits. Ami interposes-no. It isn't Ami. Are you going senile in your delirium of pain? It's her daughter, the new Princess of Mercury. She's thrown herself between you, Koyomi, and that horrid man.

He is still human, you can smell it.

She shouts something, and you can feel the Senshi power roll off of her as she takes a widened stance and crosses her arms. The three of you are encased in a sphere of translucent and scintillating water, the bolt of lightening breaks across the surface and continues to break and arc around the shell, making a beautiful web in the late afternoon light. When the sound hits a second later, the surface ripples. It's beautiful. It soothes you despite a new wracking of pain in your gut, a wrenching tightness that for a moment draws the last reserves of your strength.

You are normally Mikage Chiba. 15 Years old. 2nd Year Higschool Student, and formerly the third to hold the title of Sailor Moon, Champion of Love and Justice. At present, however, you are neither. Clad in black robes and your face obscured under a black keffiyeh, you are the cloaked mysterious rescuer of damsels, Eclipse.

You're proud of the name. It came to you in a moment of genius. Right now you're relatively sure that your father would be damn proud of you, even if you currently lack roses. However, that isn't important right now.

What is important is that your sister, your friend, and your cat are trapped in a magic bubble protecting them from a jerk with a bad haircut and the power to seemingly manipulate electricity and circumvent the free will of a great many number of people at the same time...which is problematic, however, you have a plan.

Breaking across the open door frame again before the bastard can let another bolt fly, you find a maintenance door outside the Gymnasium. You remember playing at West District during the Ward Junior High Concerto a few years back, they built the doors to the room with access from inside and outside the gym for emergencies. Opening the door you step inside, the circuit breaker box and the emergency release for the foam sprinkler system easily visible.

With your arm ramrod strait, you disconnect all the breakers in one swipe. You turn and step, now in the dark and slam your fist into where you remember the emergency glass for the big red fire button on the nearby panel sits. You hear the crinkle, feel the resistance of the spring beneath the hard plastic, and your world is bathed in red light and clarion sound.

The room, it's contents, and all it's occupants not surrounded by a dome of water are covered in a spreading coating of carbon foam. The room is lit only by limited sunlight, the sparks of electricity coming off of Mowhawk, and the light shed by Merucry Bubble Shell.

You break through the door in time to see the sphere of water break into mist, and the blue haired girl throw her arms wide between that bastard and your sister as they too are covered in the spreading foam. Before you can react, Mohawk unleashes the last of his stored electrical power into Aiha, into your friend.

She doesn't budge. It lances into the dead center of her chest and she smiles, a little unnervingly, as the flash of light fades and her hair stands on end. There is the faintest gleam of madness in her eyes.

Mohawk stands on confused, but it doesn't last long as your dagger sails through the air and sinks into his neck. He clutches at the blade in rage as your sister stands and lays a hand on the Imperial Silver Brooch and the room is filled with bubbling light and soft mist. Even from this far away, you can tell that she is injured. How long was she fighting the three of these monstrous men on her own? The familiar feeling and cry of the energies of Moon Healing Escalation extend around you, and when the magic clears, something is different.

Mohawk is clearly still injured, but he appears more steady on his feet. More than that, he looks smaller, less broad and bulky; and his ugly sneer has given way to a slightly younger countenance. Sailor Mercury's smile has taken on an almost savage ferocity.

Stealth Check contest, fail. Sailor Mercury and Sailor Moon see you leave. Sailor Mercury's eyes never broke contact.

It's surprising when Aiha cups her hands and lets fly a much smaller arc of electricity. Isn't her power supposed to be water? It doesn't matter, maybe it's a psychic thing. Mohawk is angry, but his power is gone, as is his hold on the crowd who seem to be coming out of the strangle hold and haze he had cast over their minds. The bolt strikes true, at the spot on his neck where you knife remains embedded. He twitches as you fall into action, dashing forward and onto the raised platform.

Planting what you hoped to be a solid hit into his back, you whiff and catch only the edges of the now too large suit, but he expends his already near exhausted energy to avoid the force of the blow. He drops to his knees clutching his neck after you pluck your knife out with a pop.

“I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I surrender. I give”

~To beg for the mercy you and your men were so ready to deny others. Hmph, you're lucky I am a friend of justice.~

You shoot a nod and a wave to the two Sailor Scouts, and the still dazed crowd still regaining their faculties.

You dive into the still confused crowd and roll, your cape a billowing wonder behind you. You try to cling to the shadows as you maneuver your way to one of the open doors. Catching the corner of your eye is Sailor Mercury still, following your every move until you break line of sight into the hallway, Sailor Moon scans the crowd frantically, only catching sight you again as you dive from the room.

“Who was that!?” your sisters wonders with stars in her eyes.

“He's...a friend, we need to get Luna out of here!” you still hear the blush in Aiha's voice. Okay, perhaps you hadn't embarrassed her.

It occurs to you a moment too late the roll Tuxedo Mask and the Moon Light Knight often played in the saga of your parent's youth. That you've managed to make such an impression on a young girl's heart, even under such pretenses both amuses you and puts a tightness on your heart...wait, no. That's the still smoking second degree burn.

Ancient Aliens Interlude:

Stretching beneath your vantage point, you appreciate the distant curvature of the earth. You imagine that from where you are now in the air, you are seeing somewhere into the upper boarder between central China and Russia. A testament to the engineering marvel you sit comfortably in now, you must be at the upper edge of the stratosphere.

They had told you that it wouldn't be a military or diplomatic jet that would take you home to Japan, home to Tokyo, for this emergency...and emergency they hadn’t even had the courtesy to brief you on as you were rushed to the airport, the UN Aid promising everything would be explained during the three hours in Transit. Three hours from some middle of nowhere air field, with a plane ready to go with some lavish accomodations.

The door from the upper level of the plane opens, and two men descend. You hope one of them is your host. First among them is a rather excited looking short bearded middle aged caucasian gentleman in dark browns and earth tones, a vest between his jacket and tie; and his hair is something wild. Coming up in an expertly combed and suspended shape that appears as though he were hanging upside down. The second is a smartly dressed man in a blue double breasted suit, rather than a tie around his neck there is a light aqual blue cravat held with a small gold pendant. His features are dark, East Indian you imagine, but with eyes and hair more reminiscent of southern China.

“Good day, Mr. Chiba,” and he speaks with a decidedly British accent.

“And good day to you, mister...”

“Doctor Jonathan Ward Chou,” you pause. You know this man's name, though you are certain that no one has ever seen his face.

Jonathan Ward Chou, the CEO of Ellis Unlimited. A multinational corporation that bucked trends in recent years by focusing it's profits solely on humanitarian aid, and improving the lives of it's employees abroad regardless of local labor laws or traditions; at the express cost of unending executive bonuses. Ellis Unlimited is a company that was very public, but shrouded in secrecy; though you've had the pleasure of working with them on multiple occasions in the past. Favorable contract negotiations, dealing with corrupt local officials and worried local leaders.

Like any you'd dealt with, the entire organization was certainly not made of angels, but you know Chou's name, as far as you're concerned he's one of the good guys.

“And may I introduce you another member of the UN Paranormal Think Tank being brought in for our meeting with the JSDF, Mr. Tsoukalos. His research and theories have proven useful in recent years and relevant to our mission today,”

“Ah, so we're finally getting to the matters at hand. Good day, Mister Tsoukalos,”

"He'll brief you on the archeological findings, Mr. Chiba" Doctor Chou intones, taking a seat beside you.

"Oh, I'm so excited! Not to meet you, Mr. Negotiator, I just love giving this slide show and people ACTUALLY taking it seriously" he's giddy as a screen drops from the ceiling, “Well, my part in this project proper is fairly recent, but my relevant research begins about ten or so years ago, when I suggested that Sailor Moon and the Sailor Scouts fit into the Ancient Astronaught theory,”

Rounding a corner you head out into the courtyard near the front of the school, and once you get to the gate, make an about face and start running back in. As you clear the center of the quad, halfway back to the door, your sister and Aiha in their normal clothing erupt from the dark, Koyomi carrying Luna in what you imagine was a pilfered science fair project box and towel. Your younger sister looks decidedly poor at the moment. Scuffed and bruised, with a large purple blotch running the length of her arm. Had she been hit by that bastard's lightning?

~Thank god you two are okay!~ you feign being winded. ~What happened? Is Luna okay~

“Mi-Mikage-san! Koyomis-san, I still don't know what's going on,” Aiha's eyes dart between you, then settle on you as if noticing something for the first time, “wait, re-”

Her thoughts are cut off by Luna's screaming.

You are within arm's reach of your sister in an instant, hand already reaching into the box, energy already flowing through your finger tips.

She nods, meekly. A sharp contrast to the bristling destroyer she was inches from becoming. You wonder a moment, if not for the foam could she have killed the bastard back there? Letting your thoughts drift as you pivot on your heel, you do a quick mental break down of the parts of the fight you witnessed. A smile creeps on your lips as you face away from the too, the emergency at hand still fresh in your mind. Aiha and Koyomi did good. Their tactics were sound and they worked together wonderfully.

You wish for a moment that your own experiences fighting alongside someone had gone so smoothly.

Three across you run to the Aiha's family home. It isn't a long run, and Koyomi despite herself actually manages not to trip for once despite her near panic and tears. The care she gives her precious charge and member of your family. If your sister had healing magic like you as she said, then Luna would be okay; you just need to get her to a safe place for...

They rush past you, Aiha and Koyomi, as you falter and loose step.

Luna was in labor.

Luna was giving birth.

Luna was giving birth to this time line's version of Diana.

She's giving birth to the Mau who should have been your advisor...your guardian.

No! You're running hard again. Your sister and Aiha had barely a chance to turn around to see why you lost step when you catch up and rocket past them; causing them to push themselves to keep up.

Aiha only really opens herself up online; where she doesn't have to worry about being to close to people, where she doesn't have to risk accidentally picking up on their thoughts. She stiffens; poor thing, doesn't know how to take a hug.

Tearing your eyes away from the sleeping kitties as you stroke them gently, you shoot them back at Aiha who is still blushing and stammering again. You can't resist, not that she's paying attention enough right now to really know if you're lying.

Reaching for it, the world comes back into focus, how late is it anyway? There on screen, walking through a parting crowd are Sailor Moon and the Sailor Scouts. Clad now in black battle dresses sporting their individual colors with only the faintest total hint of design connection to the sailor uniform.

Ami is the first to react, in shock. She all but screams when the original Sailor Mercury is on camera with the others walking toward Naru Osaka's podium.

Either way, there will be a superficial skin discoloration scar where the burn was if you heal it. Something that can be faded with scar gel.

You get +1 build point to two different ability scores at levels 4,8,12,16, & 20.

At Level 10 & 20, you get a flat +1 increase across the board to your ability scores.

Every Level Mikage gets Training Points to spend equal to 6 + her intelligence bonus. An increased intelligence bonus does not affect Trainings point totals acquired at earlier levels.

She gains a maxed 1d8 + Endurance bonus to Vitality. If her Endurance changes, it rolls back and affects all hit dice.
She gains a maxed 1d8 + her highest Mental stat for emotional wall. If her highest mental stat changes, it is retroactively rolls back on all Hit Dice.

This level you learn 3 New Spells, all of 2nd Level.

This level your MP becomes 11 base + Ability score bonus MP chart of 4, 15 MP in total once level up to 4 is finished.

I, the QM do not know if Mikage could still activate Moon Power Make Up on her own right now.

Mikage has no new feat slots this level.

Mikage has opened 3 Spell slots of 2nd level. What spells from her available paths would you like to learn? You also have the option of forgetting one spell you already know and replacing it with another of an equal level.

You also have the power to select two of your basic statistics and raise each of them by 1.

Choose these things, friends. Once the choice is made I will apply the whole of the level up to 4 to Mikage.

Off-hand, I'd say we take the replacement option as well, we don't seem to be packing a tiara any time soon.

Given our chosen role, Acrobatics, Persuasion, Deceive, and Intimidate seem like our core skills to keep developing. That leaves 3 more to play around with. Need to see what skills we should develop to better round out the team.
Wait, is Stealth a training? I which case, I think I found where the rest of those points need to go.

As for basic statistics.. I'm leaning toward Endurance and Will, as the less powered team member, we might need to toughen up a bit.
Alternatively, we could work on bringing up Agility and Charisma to work toward increasing our core skills more.

There are a few others psychics and spell casters on earth who have access to different cultural or magic tradition spell lists here or there, each list is a path.

Senshi is part of Mikage's heritage so she can still tap into it.

Artemis, I notice you've been mentioning Mau and the guardians being the last of them.
With the anime, Mau and such details didn't come up, while in the manga these details come up and get corrected in the same arc. Are you going a bit hybrid continuity with the fleshed out origin and Tin Kitten begin from Mau, with Mau being among the worlds that fell to Shadow Galactica, and the anime resolution that had Sailor Galaxia heading out to restore things with Star Seeds in tow? (rather than the insta-restore). Thus we have the origin and presumed-dead world together?

You have a Spells Known Chart.
Aiha has a more Flexible Powers known/maximum power level known progression
Rin gets Wizard progression for maximum flexibility.
And so forth.

Once you have access to a Power Tier, you can get more spells easily. There are also feats that grant extra spells known.

Also, I believe you'll be getting more lvl 1 spells known as you progress

Or if you can get your hands on an object or weapon with it's own spells known for you to use.

Social Combat is all maneuver based, though slaps are a viable tactic.

Even if you whittle someone down to their composure, you can still lose the social combat in the eyes of those present.

Alright, back to the spells:

So, I think we can agree to take the drop option.
Probably losing Tiara Magic for now in favor of others.
So that's three 2nd Level spells and one 1st Level.
Gathered are ones I think we should consider.

Shadow1 Camouflage
>Large bonus to Stealth.

Shadow2 Control Darkness and Shadows
>What it says on the tin. Shadow-based fun and utility.
Come on, we can't not get this one.

Shadow2 Dark Bolt
>Ranged Touch with good damage. Touches on the less-friendly aspects of Shadow.

Psychic1 Demoralize
>No HD limit area effecting debuff.

Psychic1 Mind Thrust
>Mind Bullets. Super effective.

Psychic1 Force Screen
>Invisible floating shield of force. Effective against intagible.
I like this one, would be great for both our defense and help protect others in our arms.

Psychic1 Inertial Armor
>Invisible or glowing suit of weightless armor. Effective against intagible.

Earth1 Entangle
>Turns a decent sized area a good plant-based snare that grabs at people.
>Cons: Probably needs plants.

Earth1 Magic Rose
>Going by the spell it is based on, enchants three roses to do 1d6+1 damage when thrown, with a 20ft range increment.
Seems like a classic, but I can't help but wonder how we'll manage to have the roses on hand. Also, spell it is based on doesn't scale with level.

Earth1 Hail of Roses
>Affects an area, still uses your ranged attack roll, scales with level.
>Cons: Base version requires component of moderate expense.
Depending on what goes on with the component, I thing I'd like this on as our rose-based spell of choice, and use the knife for single-target hits.

Earth1 Pass without Trace
>Subjects cannot be tracked by non-magical means.

Earth2 Restoration Lesser
>Removes negative effects and restores some ability damage.
Personally, I'd say this is a must-have for us. The ability to wipe away bad effects and get them moving again would be a huge boon for someone doing the sweep in and rescue/back-up gig.

Earth2 Locate Node
>Locate nearby or known Node, a place of power.
Not sure if we should take it, but the implications of Nodes being a thing are pretty interesting, and I'm more than a little curious as to how we'd interact with them in this system, though I'd imagine our Focus Attuned could play a part.
Considering that Faerun had several flavors of Node (at least including Earth, Evil, and Shadoweave), beyond locating such a place for our own use, the possiblity of locating places of power where others are holed up could be a very useful idea.

Senshi1 True Strike
>+20 to next attack roll within the next round.
Besides the obvious to-hit benefits, we have degrees of success to consider. Great spell if we want to hit really well with something -next- turn.
If Artemis let us have a version that we could cast on other senshi, that would be pretty awesome. Though it may lead to people blushing a lot since that probably involves us holding them while they take the shot.

Senshi2 Aid
>Bonus to attack and against fear, plus a helping of temporary hitpoints.
A solid spell for bolstering someone.

Senshi2 Resist Energy
>Good damage reduction against a chosen energy type.
Good for seriously blunting a hazard or enemy attack, whether on ourself or another.

Senshi2 Alter Self
>More drastic alteration of our physical form. Would still need the Disguise Pen to alter outfits.
Disguise to the next level.

The one I think we should take are at least Force Screen and Control Darkness and Shadows.
Control Darkness and Shadows nets us a grab-bag of useful effects we could do.
Force Screen was a tough choice, there are a lot of nifty level 1 spells, but it has a long duration and improves our survivability and ability to protect the others. Plus it gets our foot in the door for the Psychic path, which might open up more options or maybe even relationship interaction paths. (Psi/Shadow perhaps?)

The other two level 2 spells I am less set on, but I lean toward those that make our support better, like Lesser Restoration and Resist Energy.

I say we should dump most of our sailor magic and invest in the shadow path primarily. I am also on board with picking up one of the psychic armor spells. For offense, I say we pick up the shadow bolt or crystal rain spell.

I also vote that we maximize our acrobatic ability, as that combined with shadow magics should make us rather hard to pin down and hit.

However, the distorted and inconsistent voice frightens you. It always frightens you. It isn't hard to imagine that the other subjects are jealous of 34. He has a whole floor to himself. Special care is given him. Locked padded cuffs on chains instead of retractable cord on a pulley. No beeping instruments around him or glaring vital system monitors keeping him awake at all hours. You leave your electronics on the elevator on the far end of the floor in secure box. The assistant is there waiting for you with a cylinder of nearly glowing dark fluid and a rather mundane looking long needled syringe. You remove the key from the wall and proceed through the long and empty floor, drawing from the cylinder's porous cap with the needle.

The iron door opens with some difficulty, the bio luminescent moss in the tanks along the room fills the room with a soft glow. You pull a heavy switch and activate the only electronic device in the cell, a large high intensity light at the back of the room. It hits Subject 34, who groans as he wakes. His shadow stretches across the floor to your feat.

“Good afternoon, Jo,” you smile “How are you feeling today?”

“Go to hell,” he says through unkempt mane and unshaven face.

“That isn't very nice, Jo,”

You advance, brandishing the syringe. He flinches on the floor and tries to back up as far as the chains will allow him. Relief washes over him as you halt halfway towards him and kneel. It turns to panic when you plunge the needle into the floor. Instead of braking the metal on concrete, it sinks into his shadow. Plunger depressed fully, you remove the device with a wet plop, the shadow stretching off the floor at your pull. Jo appears quite frightened, and it serves him well when his veins flush black and he begins to howl in pain.

With a snap, his shadow wrenches from his feet. He goes still, listless and borderline catatonic. The fire of rebellion in his eyes dies quite conveniently as the shadow rises as a turbulent sphere before you. Delightful. Now Jo can be brought to the regular floor and loaded into the automated system without shutting down all the machines or freeing himself or anyone else. This will make your life a bit easier...even if the whole thing puts you ill at ease.

Stretching and groaning before you, the shadow slowly adopts a humanoid shape. Details emerge out of the dark, and he appears as a creature of jet black body interlaced with subcutaneous chromium armor. The trim of the chrome runs with a red circuit pattern, that webs across the blackened portions of his...flesh. Beneath a helm that would look quite at home in a Toku era production of Rider.

“So, what's your name?”

There is an electric crackle and hum to his voice, you would liken it to an odd sort of off tone auto tune. Oh well, you begin to turn away to return to your other duties.

He is clearly injured, and being dragged in his good arm by the scruff of his collar is a young man with white hair and a large bleeding gash on his forehead. The youth is dressed in white, and it is stained heavily with blood and dust.

“Ah, Thief. Does this one require medical attention or wo-”

“Formula S.” he hisses, “Our master will need this one's shadow extracted,”

You look down at the cylinder and syringe in your hand.

“Right now? I just used the needle, it's hardly sanitary,”

“Spare me your humor, Aurora. Time matters. If he is missed, it could all for apart,”

End Interlude.

>Cone of unavoidable crystal shards. 3d4 damage, no attack roll, no save. Might scale, depending on how augmenting translates.
Nice. I vote that the casting looks like a crystal rose breaking up and a hail of crystaline petals cast from out hand.

Psychic2 Detect Hostile Intent
>Detect those with hostile intent within 30 feet for 10min/level. Can't be caught flat-footed by beings with minds to detect. Can make Sense Motice checks as a free action against anyone in range.
That's pretty handy.

Psychic2 Body Equilibrium
>Walk on water, webs, yarn, quicksand, etc. Half damage from falls.

Psychic2 Concussion Blast
>Gives target a solid force-effect thump (1d6), can hit them cleanly as long as they don't have total cover/concealment. No attack/save. May scale depending on augmentation handling.
Also works on objects. Could be handy to score a hit on someone in a crowd or next to people we like in general.

Psychic2 Id Insinuation
>Confuses target and causes erratic behavior. Continues as long as we concentrate+1 round. Will negates. May scale to multiple targets or more difficult to resist.
Geeze, Ahia is going to be a beast with this all this stuff. Good support spell for us to seriously disrupt an enemy.

Psychic2 Inflict Pain
>Inflicts Pain. -4 on rolls, -2 if they save.
Ok, this one. Less messy that the hamstring and would effect their mental abilities as well.

Moon2 Moonbeam
>A cone of pale moonlight springs from your hand. That is about it.
Fancy light and may cause lunar-triggered transformations.
If this interacts with Moon Child and similar, this could be a seriously neat 2nd level spell to have. Otherwise, mainly good for show.

Moon2 Serenity Judgement
>In the name of the moon, we punish you. Calls on divine power to do scaling damage to a foe, 2d6 at current level. Will save for half.
Decent damage, not as much as Darkbolt, but less creepy feeling. We will need snappy Moonisms or Tuxedoisms when casting.

Force Screen for Tiara Magic

Control Darkness and Shadows (I think with that interlude we should be even more set on that one)

Lesser Restoration (I hate choosing between the heal/buffs, but it's ability to restore and remove could be vital)

The third slot is still a wildcard for me, I think I have to agree with folks saying we should pick up an offensive ability. Trick is which.

Darkbolt - Ranged touch attack, decent damage, touches on the dark side. 2d8

Crystal Swarm - No attack, no save. (no margins for bonus damage or effects) Area effect. 3d4

Hail of Roses - Ranged attack roll, area affect. 4d4. May need a focus.

Concussion Blast - Only 1d6, but accurately strike target. May scale.

Inflict Pain - Not damaging, but works better than our hamstring attack.

Serenity Judgement - 2d6, base spell does double vs undead. Wouldn't be surprised if our version did similar against certain supernatural foes.

Magic Rose - Temporarily enchant three roses to do 1d6+1 when thrown, going by the base spell.

Moonlight - Not an attack, but if it triggers the Moon Child advantage, even if it didn't function on us as the caster, would be a huge benefit to Koyomi, and a pretty cool special effect for our being awesome.

Moon Beam has some benefits when used on Senshi, if used on a Senshi empowered by the Moon, Please see your QM.

Also remember, spells you want can also find a home in various spell storage devices.

Be they certain magic objects or moon tech crystals. Something you may want to talk to Luna about later if there are more spells you still want.

Gives a good boost to our sneaking and dashing about, and increases out ability to track down information to the level of the other social skills.
Rely on ranged bonuses and surprise in direct combat, for now.
