[Essence Recovery: 5/5]

You slowly come back to your senses just as the light of dawn begins to break through the curtains of the east-facing window.
You begin to stir, every muscle and tendon in your body screaming with pain from yesterday's exertion. Feeling as heavy as a marble statue, and about as willing (or able) to move of your own volition.
As you gracelessly roll down the bed and into the floor, tangled in blankets that do their best to strangle you, you find yourself muttering, under your breath, curses incomprehensible even to your own ears.

As far as terrible mornings go, this one takes the crown.

Inching bit by bit, in a struggle no less titanic than yesterday's fight, you drag yourself across the floor of your guest's bedroom in the royal castle of the city-state of Tianna, and finally, manage to pull yourself up to the window.

The glorious morning sun is rising in the distance, shedding its light on the red roofs and white walls of the city. Shops begin to open, and people take to the streets as another day begins.

Then, you finally manage to slam the damn curtains closed and drag yourself back to bed, fully intending to sleep another month.

"My lady! My lady, wake up!" A voice rouses you, together with some vigorous shaking, an unprecised amount of time later. (But definitely not a month.)

A woman in a maid's apron stands by your bed, meeting your homicidial glare with a cheerful smile.
Finally, the smell of coffee and freshly baked bread manages to reach you, coming from a platter resting on a nearby service cart. A game-changer.

You somehow manage to have breakfast, while the servant opens the windows and cleans up your room. The sun is already fairly high in the sky.

In addition to the muscle pains, you realize that your wounds, the holes through your abdomen and your thigh caused by Fleurdelis' bone spears, are scarring with prodigious speed, but it'll still be a while 'till you can consider yourself fully healed.

"Queen Amata is fairly angry with you, I'm afraid." The maid explains while folding your blankets, without losing that cheer. It's like it's not her problem. ...Which, in fact, isn't. "Something about causing a commotion downtown."

You briefly remember Amata warning you not to do anything needlessly flashy in front of the townspeople. Followed by you immediately going to help the people clear rubble along main street using your Exalted strength, in turn followed by your training during the night by lifting and shattering a large chunk of city wall.

"Oh." You reply.

I actually have no idea how Exalted works (or the quest mechanics here for that matter), can you please explain it briefly?
>>
>>30452616
It was mostly a joke.

Lunars are a kind of exalt who have their core powers linked to their attributes, instead of skills. Appearance is one of the attributes that comprise the Social stat.
>>
>>30452616
Quest mechanics are simply "when suggesting actions, roll 1d10".

Next post in a moment.

If >>30452616 or any newbie to Exalted has specific setting questions, ask away. Otherwise 1d4chan wiki has some setting info.

You'll leave your (?) newly-assigned maid in your room, tasked with fixing the wreck you've made of your bed, and decide to go and see, first of all, princess Irene.

But not before changing your clothes. You slept in those, after all. They're also completely ruined from yesterday's fight.

"I'm not sure we have anything in your size." The servant replies after examining your figure. "But I can ask the other maids, some are good at fixing clothes' sizes."

After searching for something that would fit you, you settle for a large, frilled gown in red. It fits you nicely, you think, and wouldn't look out of place in a high society ballroom or evening tea.

Thanking the little maid, you head to meet Irene. Her bedroom was wrecked in yesterday's fight, but you ask around a bit to the soldiers and other servants, and hear that she is overseeing the emplacement of some of her strange magical weapons on the castle's towers.

After a few minutes of looking around, you find her, together with a team of her white-cloaked soldiers, on the top floor of the southeastern tower.

"..and this is the directional collector. After the main charge has passed through the activation chamber, it recovers up to 40% of the residual charge, that on a smaller gun would get dispersed in the ambient essence, and instead recycles it in a feedback cycle for- oh, good morning." You find her in the middle of an improptu lesson to her crew, some kind of highly complex magitek weapon, partially disassembled, its parts orderly arranged on the floor like in an exploded diagram of its inner components. Some of the soldiers are taking notes, others are struggling to stay awake. "It's almost midday though." She adds.

"I hear that you did some showy stuff yesterday in town. You have to be careful: there are few people who hate Anathema on principle here, but there are many, many more who are just plain scared. They don't know you yet, they just know that there's someone in town who can lift houses. And that's not a very calming thought."

"No, no." She shakes her hand dismissively left and right. "You don't have to apologize to me. Mom might be a bit mad with you, though."

She lowers her tone of voice and draws closer, whispering in your ear: "...but trust me, either don't show up right now and keep your profile low for a while, or do something to make it up to her."

You slowly nod.

"I mean, she's a bit worried right now. You just Exalted. She wants to believe that you're still the same person and haven't, like, been taken over by a skin-wearing ghost-demon or something. The citizens are still shocked and depressed after yesterday's attack, after all. They don't need more shocks."

Yeah, you have to admit that that makes sense.

(more or less a draw, huh)

"So." You cast a glance at the disassembled weapon. "How are things going?"

She takes a deep sigh, kneeling down next to the mass of metal and wood and crystal bits and pieces and beginning to reassemble it. The soldiers stand back and let her do it. "It's a mess. The troops are understandably upset at the idea of Tianna being targeted by Exalted. Especially Abyssal Exalted."

"But we managed to push them back."

She makes a gesture to the soldiers of her crew, signalling them that they can go back to their other duties. Once they've left, she continues: "Only thanks to you, and even then we had to first wear that woman called Fleurdelis down, and she almost killed all of us. Even the entire armed forces of Tianna, with the exception of me, my mom, and my brother, would be no match for her. And what's worse..."

"...They were holding back." You complete her sentence.

(cont.)
>>
Irene nods. "There were two of them, but only one actually attacked. They had high-quality undead troops, but only used them to cause panic in town and briefly occupy the palace. She even fought trying to keep casualties low for some reason, even though it would have taken her almost no effort to turn the city in a bloodbath."

"Plus." You ponder. "They had a huge magical airship, and just used it to ram a hole in the city walls."

"...Yes. I can't believe they didn't have any high-power essence discharge weapon on that ship, especially considering how armored it was. They want to capture Tianna as intact as possible." She replies.

"...We'll have to get some answers about them somehow."

"Possibly before their next attack." Irene grins, giving a final twist to a large screw on the now-assembled weapon. "In any case, I'm activating the full defensive power of Tianna's First Age weapons stockpile. Best we can do is be ready for the worse.

"...I was thinking I should go and try and commune with the Unconquered Sun." You add.

"I guess your powers come from him in some way, right? The golden glow and sun symbol appearing on your forehead when you use them and whatnot." She stands back up, brushing dust off her knees. "How do you intend to do that?"

Well, the Unconquered Sun is too busy with his games of Divinity to give us direct help but we could at least figure out some sort of prayer or something that we can teach to other people, in case we decide to start converting people.

To be fair, they also know that the first thing this person wanted to do with their house-lifting is help the common people and fix things.

Of course, Solars "fixing" things doesn't always go well.
>>
If we're from the South it's entirely possible we know some worship dances (and both prayer and dance is covered by the Perform skill in Exalted proper), so we can likely do both at once.

You don't have much experience in religion or prayer, though you are now - apparently - a priestess of the Sun. You wouldn't know where to start.

But you imagine that this situation is so unique that there are, probably, no expected standards from you.

You have to wonder. How often does this happen? How many Solars are there around, anyway?

"...Can I use the top floor of the tower for a while?" You ask Irene, as she picks up the cannon-sized contraption from the ground and props it on her shoulder.

"...Are you going to break anything?"

"No! No, I swear. I just need a bit of privacy."

She stares at you in confusion for a few seconds, then some kind of smile spreads on her face. "...Oh. I understand. Well, if you want to do on your own. Of course."

"...Wait. What?" You ask, feeling like you're being misunderstood. "On my own what?"

"No, no, you don't need to worry. I'll make sure no one disturbs you until you're finished! But remember, In case you get lonely, I'm sure we could find skilled professionals for your needs."

"W-what are you talk-"

With a blush, yet a sly grin, Irene pats you on the shoulder with her free hand, and then just turns around and walks downstairs. You can hear her saying "Tower's gonna be off-limits for today, boys. You!" "Yes, ma'am?" "Set a guard detail. No one gets in until miss Maka leaves the tower." "Uh...er... yes."

...You decide it's best to not think too much about it, and climb the stairs, reaching the top floor of the tower. It's almost noon, and the sun shines straight down on you with its full power.

You stand under the sun, lost in thought, for a few minutes. You focus on the feel of its rays on your skin, keeping your eyes closed. Somehow, this feels different than usual...

In a daze, without thinking your actions through but acting entirely on instinct and feeling, you slowly remove the gorgeous red dress that has been loaned to you by the maid, and strip down to nothing. The sensation all over your body increases tenfold.

Moving like in a feverish dream, you step around, barefooted on the rough stone floor, unsure if the music you're hearing in your own ears, welling up from the depths of your memory, is something you're humming and singing or if it exists only in your head. Your long hair brushes on your skin as you spin, sending shivers down your neck and spine, as your aching muscles struggle to keep your momentum, and your brain desperately tries to ignore the pain from your wounds.

The music turns into words, a language entirely unfamiliar to your ears or tongue. And the words turn to light and glory.

Bit by bit, the million sensations raining down on your body and mind are numbed down to the point of disappearing, and you feel as if you were floating weightlessly in a warm embrace.

"MY CHILD."

You stand up, your head briefly spinning. It takes you a moment to fully return to reality. The sun is about to set on the horizon.

This experience has been harrowing for you. You still feel feverish and off-balance.
But, you feel like you've gained some wisdom from your patron god.

>>
>>30455717
Definitely. Like Maka suspects, there is not a standardized way of worshipping the Unconquered Sun, since his cult is common to many different cultures.

Communing with the Sun however is, by canon, something quite uncommon.

Maka gets a break because she's a Zenith-caste Solar, and because I like to run the UCS as more active and communicative than canon suggests, at least as far as his Chosen are involved.
(But even then, he still IS a very "solve it yourself, that's the entire point of Solars" kind of god, like >>30455581 suggests. But he isn't above giving advice to his Zeniths.)

>>
>>30455750

"Heroic Mortals" is more of a narrative idea of someone being badass enough to have a face of a name.
There isn't really a way to "become" one: if you are important enough to the plot to have a name and a face, instead of being a faceless member of a crowd, you're automatically "heroic". (this is not really canon, but it's how I run it.)

Their difference is that faceless extras have only one HP and are basically no threat except when they have enormously overwhelming numerical superiority + equipment + excellent leadership. Leadership is a big factor, and an Exalted commander can turn even a group of extras into a terrifying fighting force (as long as he leads them).

Heroic Mortals have 3 HP, a face, a personality, and actual stats. They are able to learn their own magics, less powerful than what the Exalted can do, but still useful and meaningful.

You can actively try and find awesome and interesting people to recruit, or just live your adventures and try and recruit them when you inevitably meet them. There isn't a standardized way: it's just a matter of talking them into joining you because [reason].

You can recruit extras as well as heroic mortals.
>>
So now we're at what, four points in Zenith and two points in everything else?
>>
>>30455868
>>30455919
>>30455934

It was a piece of the city wall that was already broken off. You didn't use an undamaged, useful portion of the wall. It was going to be dismantled and the bricks recycled or thrown away anyway.
Amata is (probably, you're only hearing word of mouth) angry because displays of superpowers make normal people nervous in the same way that you would be nervous if you knew that your next-door neighbor could fly and shoot laser beams from his eyes, but you aren't sure if he's Superman or Darkseid or just a jackass that will use his powers for personal reasons, petty gain, or the lulz.
>>
>>30455937

Steel feeling a bit upside-down, you leave the tower, knocking on the door that Irene posted guards on to protect your "privacy".

The young soldier that unlocks and opens the door for you immediately turns into a color you can only properly describe as "vermillion" and begins to shiver, as if some muscles of his body were trying to pull him away while others are desperately struggling to keep him in place.

"E- eh... er- uh..." He stammers, eyes fixed on you.

It takes you a few seconds to realize that you have forgot your new dress upstairs.

"...One moment." You apologize, and turn back in. You return a few minutes later, more properly attired, but by now the soldier is nowhere to be seen.

Shrugging in your shoulders, you meet Irene again. Not too far away, she's doing drills and practicing forms in the courtyard. Now that both her mother and her brother are wounded, she seems to be taking the defense of Tianna extremely seriously.

You watch for a few minutes her unorthodox fighting style, sword in one hand, lance in the other. Her steps are uncharacteristically heavy, and her armor clanks and whirrs oddly with her faster movements.

Finally, she notices you. "Hi, Maka. Are you done?"

"I'm... done. Thank you." You have the feeling that it would be better to just ignore all this misunderstanding. "I was wondering if I could borrow a weapon from your stores."

"Oh? You seemed perfectly able of fighting bare-handed."

"...yes, but, you know. Having a bit of range sometimes can be useful, and I won't always have something handy to toss at the enemy." You explain.

"Good point." She admits. "So you need a bow?"

"I was thinking about a pistol-type weapon, actually." You say.

Her eyes turn star-shaped. "REALLY?!"

For a moment, you feel like you've just stepped over a land mine.

"Oh, but weapons using the pressure caused by the detonation of firedust charges would only grand you a limited range! I could loan you a direct essence-discharge weapon, I'm sure mom won't have anything to object! Still, those take a lot of essence out of you. But maybe it's alright! I imagine your Essence is better adapted to external uses than mine! Man, I'm so envious about that. Or you could use a Hearthstone to provide a constant motonic feed, but unless you have one of your own, we don't have any to loan you unfortunately. I'd have to check if I can assemble something custom for you from my bits box! I should have some extra essence-cohesion accelerators and Quasa crystals for the harmonics... mhh..."

"Irene?" You try and slow her down. "Is everything all right?"

"...Oh? Oh, yes, I was just lost in thought." She replies, clearly hyperventilating. "Well, I have a couple firewands or a flamepiece for you, but they wouldn't grant you a lot of reach. They're fairly short-ranged weapons. Essence-directed weapons shoot magical power instead of a mass of flaming chemicals, but that Essence will have to come from you, which isn't really sustainable in a long fight. There are three ways to handle it: using pre-loaded Essence cartridges, which means only firing one or two shots. Using a Hearthstone, which lets you shoot all you want but, well, requires a Hearthstone and a Manse... or just go all the way through and use your own personal essence, which is a fairly ineffective use for it."

"I'm still not very convinced." You mumble. "I mean, like you said, I can fight fairly well bare-handed, and if ranged weaponry is so complex... maybe I should just focus on a single style of combat? Or maybe not? What if I had a Hearthstone? Would that make things simpler?" You ask her.

"Well, it would, because you could use an Essence-discharge weapon without being restricted by cartridges and without burning your personal Essence. But you'd need to find a Manse, a place of power built to channel ambient Essence and coalesce it into a gem."

You listen, intently.

"The gem is called Hearthstone, and feeds the Manse's essence directly to you... or into an artifact of your choice. Unfortunately, Manses are extremely rare. Of course, if someone owns one he is going to be very interested in keeping it, and abandoned Manses don't stay abandoned for long. Maybe there is one, out there, but who knows where."

"I see." You nod, pacing back and forth. "Say, Irene, are you busy? Did I interrupt your exercises, by the way? I didn't want to get in your way."

"No, no, not at all!" She replies pleasantly. "I was about to go and eat a bite. Would you mind to have dinner together?"

That's fair, but we also have TWO charms that help our punchery, and ZERO that help our gadgetry. Also, a Resistance charm that makes our skin like armor is in-caste and further helps punchiness. >>
>>30457675
Exactly this.

Being a Zenith means that we're more able to collect people to do things like gadgetry FOR us. We excel at being a leader and a mentor, and we'd be able to guide them into making wonders themselves. We're not an island, and we have access to, and the ear of, an entire kingdom. Not to mention a kingdom of our own that we could eventually make it back to.

"I'd be glad to accept!" Is your reply. After all the stress and fighting and training and soul-searching you recently went through, spending some time in good company wouldn't be a bad thing.

"Right! Where should we go? I know a place in town that's-"

All of sudden, the short, long-haired maid that woke you up this morning appears from behind a corner. "Wait a second, princess Irene! You can't go to a formal dinner in armor!"

...She wanted to come right away? With that on?

"...Oh, you're right, silly me." She replies, like she really had just noticed. "Give me a hand, Millian, would you?"

With an exasperated sigh, the servant walks up to Irene (who seemed like she was ready to remove her suit of armor in the middle of the castle courtyard), grabs her hand, and gently drags her to the barracks. "Wait here!" She orders.

It doesn't take much, fortunately, and after about ten minutes, one (1) fresh and perfumed brand-new Irene Tai Tianna is delivered, courtesy of Short Maid Express. She's wearing a very stiff-looking, impeccable high uniform all in white and blue with a gold trim and a black skirt. Her long blonde hair is gathered in two twin tails.

She looks like her mother (or her maid, you guess) dressed her, but at the same time she looks marvelous, and just as confident as she was in that large, overwrought suit of armor.

You briefly wonder if it's self-confidence, or rather f she just doesn't care about her clothing and appearance.
>>
>>30457905
It would probably require some big convincing, too, since she's likely got pretty big intimacies to her mother and Tianna.
>>
>>30457923

It's possible. Maybe she's a Godblooded offspring of some sort of domestic god. Gods (and spirits in general) get Charms relating to their portfolios.
>>
>>30457966
It's what they were saying last thread. Exaltedfag can probably enlighten us - after all, I'm sure they knew how many allocatable points we had at the beginning. After that, it's a simple matter of counting.
>>
Good thing she has others who worry about that for her, you guess, because you do notice that, on your way down the streets of Tianna to the place where you have chosen to dine (a fancy restaurant called the Crystal Tree), you turn a vast amount of heads.

Of course, she is the princess and therefore bound to be recognized by the populace but even if that wouldn't be a factor, you have to admit that she is quite striking.

All along the way, Irene is bubbly and cheerful, and you can see she can barely restrain herself to talk about her favorite subject: technomagic. She makes some effort to steer the conversation towards something that is neither that nor "work" (abyssals, city defense, etc), and she stops every now and then, wondering if she's bothering you or annoying you.

For your part, about 99% of her talk makes so little sense that it mostly just flies way over your head. You pay absolutely no attention to it, perhaps feeling a bit guilty about doing so, and just throw in a vague question or gesture of interest every now and then to show that you're listening. For her part, she rants and rants about technical specs and trivia you can't imagine anyone except other Exalted magitech engineers caring about.

"I don't get many chances to talk to someone else like this." She says at a certain point, after you've sat down at the table, but while still waiting to be served.

When you raise your head to meet her gaze in response, she suddenly grasps your hand as you were idly toying with a fork, and it falls on the plate noisily.

Looks like she has something she wants to talk about. Something more important than her love for magical technology.

Her pale skin is surprisingly, pleasantly cool, and carries the texture of exquisitely-polished marble. By contrast, you can feel the skin of your own hands, still carrying the warmth, perhaps the mild burn, of your sunbath of today, gently trading warmth to her fingers.

"The soldiers and officers listen to me because it's their job. My mother isn't interested, and is also very busy." She explains, eyes fixed in yours, hand not letting go. "Samiel... he's a good kid, but he's a bit dumb when it comes to this stuff. And... I don't really have a lot of other people. The maids just pretend to care. Well, except Millian, who just outright tells me that I'm boring and annoying. Of my three unexalted brothers, two of them are fairly... cold and distant to me. I think they're upset that they didn't Exalt." She says, sounding like she should feel guilty about it. "...And I can never tell what the third is thinking."

"...But you're here, with me. Listening to me talk on and on about stuff you don't care about." She says, eagerly squeezing your hand. Just by looking in her eyes you can tell how much she can enjoy simply getting a break from her job, all her duties, all her expectations, and simply be herself with someone that will let her be herself.

"...I know I'm not a very good conversationalist. Sorry. I keep talking and talking without thinking about what other people think. I... am I boring you?"

For the first time, she stops talking, waiting for a real reply from you.

You can only PICK ONE.

Judging from how the replies are written up we're either only pretending to care or we just straight up don't understand any of it but are happy to let her indulge herself.

Preferred response is that we think all this stuff is cool on a conceptual level but we'll probably never make heads or tails of the actual details of it, and she clearly cares a great deal about it so we're happy to let her talk and hope we pick up one or two things.

Worst possible outcome of that is probably her deciding to give us private tutoring in something we'll probably never wrap our head around, but that's not so bad.

Each person voting rolls once. (if you later change your vote, you don't reroll: reference your previous post, also for clarity reasons).

The roll that determines the result will be chosen randomly by me between the votes of all those who voted for the winning (most-voted) choice.

If the first guy voting for something gets a high roll, and then everyone else bandwagons but doesn't roll for fear of spoiling that high score on their wanted action, that score will be lowered accordingly.

This is a general rule by the way, not for just this action.

Maybe in the future I'll change the system (i have a few ideas) but for now it works like this.

You gently grab her hands back, wrapping them with your fingers, entwining them with hers.

"...Maybe I'm a bit dumb too." You admit with a smile.

Her eyes, fixed on you, blink a few times.

"You're a genius, Irene. You're brilliant. Your grasp of technology and magic, of all the details and intricacies... I could never do that. I'm not that smart."

"...So..." She asks, almost trembling. Tears seem to start welling up in her eyes.

"...I haven't understood a word you said all night." You reply with a smile.

"Then... why did you listen? Why did you spend the evening with me?" She slowly pulls her hands out from under yours, but you lean in after her and grasp her arm.

"Because I like you."

"...Eh?"

"Because I like your energy. I like your passion. I like how much you can love something, even though I can't understand how it works for myself. That enthusiasm, that strength is beautiful. You shouldn't be ashamed of it. You should be proud of it."

You slowly tug at her arm, pulling her a bit closer to you.

"It's a gift you have, Irene. And..."

"...And?"

"And it's also a gift for me." You lean in, and gently kiss her, her lips pleasantly cool from the evening breeze.

It lasts three seconds, no more, and it's over all too soon. When you lean back, her normally pale complexion is deep red, almost darker than yours. You can't help but find it funny, but for a moment, the thought that she could see your laughter as scorn and derision blocks you.

Then, she starts laughing first, eyes watering, bending over the table in fits. At that point, you can't help but join her.

Will AFK for about 3 hours. If the thread is still alive when I'm back, I'll be wrapping it up. Until then, in addition to just voting on the choice, since there's time, you can be more specific as to how you want to handle Irene.

Maka didn't realize that she used/acquired a social power yet. She will shortly.
Another argument of discussion could be if you want to keep using it on her once you've realized it.
>to experiment and learn how to use it better
>to attempt to develop also a second (and final, since it would be the 5th) power in this same field
>for her sake, to make her more confident and clear her doubts
>to improve your relationship

Just to clear things out: this power is not what in Exalted technical terms would be "UMI", Unnatural Mental Influence. It's not "mind rape", it doesn't change what people think, or who they are, or what they want.

It just gives you essentially perfect communication for a single point you're making, targeted to a single person. They're not forced to accept it or to agree with you, but they will see it (and you) in as favorable a light as possible. We can argue about it, but I wouldn't consider this power "evil". (in general, I don't consider UMI "evil" either: just a lot more grey)

For newbies, UMI, as opposed to "natural mental influence", radically alters people. Reshapes their memories, interests, objectives, the things they love and the things they hate, to better suit your needs. It's not innately evil, but it's much more powerful and intrusive, with the potential for a lot more abuse.

If you try and develop a second social power here, it will likely be UMI.
>>
>>30459240
anon, we aren't playing dynasty politics, we're playing harem politics. First we get the entire royal family, then the Abyssals when they return. I agree that a soak charm definitely fits our exaltation and story thus far better, but whether it's worth it depends on its effect.

>>30458967
Considering how she reacted and what we did to her we don't need to make her more uncomfortable just yet. Do remember that until the battle we were basically a unknown. I would really want something that would get us to perfect defense. We need that on the first chance we can get because we already encountered a combat focused abyssal and a social one. We are not specialized for social combat but are not inept so we need a way to be able to keep the combat monster occupied.
And the only way i see that with us surviving is some perfect defense or another analogue, since we got hit hard with those spikes and the abyssal was holding back a lot most likely.

>>
>>30461347
If the combat system isn't broken, perfect defenses won't need to be a thing.
>>
>>30461221
Fuck yeah. Combine this with Katars, and perhaps later on a combination of Buckler Katar and Dagger in each hand. If we can have a daikglaive disappear we could have each of these six tools go poof and materialize when we need it.

Consider this, Wrestling coupled with some efficient use of kicks and cheap shots with the option to defend or smash with a buckler and the two angles of attack for each hand a dagger and a katar offers. The katar being parallel to the line of force of the hand while the dagger is perpendicular, in the same move we can have a stab and a draw or push cut. An with the daikglaive poof method we can have these babies wink in and out of existence at will, to allow us to grab. Or without it we simply drop the dagger and katar and grab with that hand, perhaps leaving a hand without a buckler for more mobility - but with the ability to wish them in and out of existence that choice is not necessary.

This is inspired of course from some recent videos about sikh fighting i saw.

Here one of them:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CV_WT80rZ-E

Pretty nasty moves. With Solar Hero Style we could pull a lot of them off with small fist weapons and such.
>>
>>30461382
Exactly. I'm hoping for a simple soak charm that reduces all damage by one point for a scene. Since you need charms to deal two points of damage, that means mooks and extras won't be able to hurt us while it's active, and exalts will need to expend resources to do so. That seems very useful without being too potent, but we'll see.
>>
>>30461515

Scenelong seems a bit much, when our damage booster is per-attack.
>>
>>30461539
True, but at the same time, per-action would make it too expensive to use if it can't soak a two point attack outright - effectively making it a perfect defense. Is there a middle ground that doesn't feature something clumsy like it lasting for Zenith actions? If not, I would prefer to see the game be defense focused rather than combat focused, since OP said a big theme is exalts coming back again to fight another day.

Plus, while a damage booster has the direct effect of removing someone from combat faster, this soak charm only keeps you alive longer. It doesn't do anything if your opponent's goal doesn't feature beating you but, instead, is about completing sow other goal or killing some other person in the area.

I don't know whether that's enough to call it balanced, but I would be interested in taking it over more before the QM gets back.
>>
>>30461448
I hope you understand you impractical and unnecessary all of that actually is,

Once you move into the realm grappling having a Katar is a hindrance and a Buckler Katar is downright idiotic.

Something more sane would be focusing on something like Solar jiu jitsu to draw you opponent in and deny them the ability to attack.
>>
Can't we pick up the "Fight drunk, on drugs and while having sex" Martial Art?
Mostly because it exists and the idea is hilarious.
>>
>>30461750
While that sounds fun, I'm not quite seeing that kinda person in our MC at this point. Though later, who knows.
>>
>>30461448
>Daggers, bracelets and pointy metal stuff all over the fucking body.

Yup that seems like a way for us to dress. Concealed or inconspicuous hand weapons all over. large one piece heavy bracelets that can be used to block a sword and have a vicious edge, daggers, knives, claws stuff in the hair, on the belt on a necklace, in the boots, in the armbands, etc.

>>30461382
They might not be needed just now but once we get to fight with gods or multiple opponents we need to get a larger complement defensive maneuvers that guarantee our survival. We are mostly a leadership person so defense is more important so that our mooks and allies can kill theirs. Thus soak, defenses, parry, dodge all four of them. A multispectral defense

Also we nee shaping defenses.
>>
>>30461686
That depends on how much you commit to it. One grab to get them on the ground and followed by a stab or a cut? quite good. And you kind of need something to parry with once they start swinging daiklaives.

and then you can always drop the katar or the dagger. The buckler might be a bit hard but that i was thinking with the ability to poof it in and out like a daikglaive or a powerbow.
>>
>>30461778
>Also we nee shaping defenses.
I'm not sure it would be worth the power slot. Unless we're planning to fight some fate ninjas or visit the wyld, I'd prefer to get a PD and a surprise negator first
>>
>>30461750
If we find a tutor and increase our Dawn score? Probably. For now, we should focus on our final character creation charm rather than possible additional styles.
>>
>>30461778
>Also we nee shaping defenses.
Sooner rather than later? Yes. As our final charm slot? Probably not. Don't worry, though, that's in-Caste for us, so it shouldn't be too hard to pick up.
>>
>>30461839
We've been talking about going full-grapple. Submission holds, joint locks, and limb destructions. Not 'push them to the ground and then stab them.' Which isn't to say that your idea isn't valid, just that we would probably be better served by a pair of full-arm smashfists and thigh-high godkicker boots than katars and knives.
>>
>>30461778
I don't think we need to worry about shaping for a while, if at all.

Honestly, though, I think our fists should cover everything we need as far as anything physical goes. Solar Hero is pretty fucking nuts. What we SHOULD be working on is getting more and more skills when it comes to our social kung-fu, and making sure we can lead.

No UMI though, that shit gets creepy.
>>
>>30461987
I definitely agree, but not until we get a solid physical defense charm. It's in-caste for us, so I would really rather not be a glass cannon.

After that, we should definitely pick up more charms for doing things like attracting followers and exerting War/Bureaucracy-style leadership effects. Maybe some other Social effects? I wouldn't refuse a Zenith 'prayer' charm that lets us send an essence bribe and a threat to a god to strongly suggest that do what we want.
>>
>>30461870
True, its unlikely we will get hit with shaping so PD and surprise negator is a better use of our time, but i mentioned that after all the others.

We would also need to capitalize on our massive social score considering our high rating in Zenith and Social. I do declare we need at least three or four social charms ASAP, once we get PD and a surprise negator plus perhaps Immunity to everything so we do not get poisoned.

Sagacious reader of intent, master of small manners, Respect commanding attitude that forces everyone to listen to us and that charm that allows you to project a big image of you in the sky and your voice of you 20x essence miles effective.

Once we have those, Shaping defense, some kind of heal like wound mending perfect stance, Hardship Surviving mendicant spirit so we can go and preach everywhere without needing special close because its too hot or too wet or too cold and we die of exposure or get ill and die, and spirit detecting glace so we can see supernatural shit.

And of course swallow the sun so we can hide our anima. - this one perhaps it would be best to get immediately after PD so we don't broadcast to everyone SOLAR EXALTED HERE! LOLOL!
>>
>>30461956
I dont like this. It kills mobility and allows others to stab us in the back while we are on the ground rolling and chocking and forcing submission the other. Limb destruction however is good. The other however if not done blinding fast and not liable to get us to the floor is something i do not want to try with multiple combat opponents not occupied that are not low level mooks.
>>
>>30462157
...you're making a lot of assumptions about the metagame mechanics of this quest being modeled after 2e. This is a rules-light version of Qwixalted, last I heard, which is itself a rules-light version of the 1e quickstart.
>>
>>30462332
I may be best to just pretend we don't know any of the rules or mechanics yet, methinks.
>>
>>30462332
True, but the concept still holds, if there are equivalents in 1e. Then something equivalent should be in Qwixalted.

The problem is that without a circle and only three named dragonblooded we are kind of in a precarious situation and have to plan around going solo as a Celestial with perhaps a small group of dragonblooded aids and said small town kingdom under the flirty queen dragonblooded.
>>
>>30462237
Except this is a narrative game, not a tactical one. It's one where the QM has explicitly said that defeated Exalts have a nasty habit of falling off cliffs, being left for dead in burning buildings, and so forth, and then appearing again later. It's also probably one where people step the fuck back when exalts wrestle.

Plus, if we have a good soak charm, mooks shouldn't be able to hurt us while we're grappling anyway.

Anyway, I would still rather not use katars and knives and such. I would rather we fight either unarmed or with things like smashfists and godkicker boots that we can incorporate into our ensemble like any other arm-length gloves or thigh-high boots.
>>
>>30462468
>True, but the concept still holds, if there are equivalents in 1e. Then something equivalent should be in Qwixalted.
The problem with that is that, in Qwixalted, there are no perfect anythings and there are no surprise negators. It's also a FAR less lethal game - basically, paranoia combat isn't a thing.

Qwixalted uses charm keywords that can be purchased for Abilities and activated to modify the Ability by spending Essence. For example, if you had Melee with Reaching, Supernatural, and Holy, you could spend 2E to do a Reaching, Holy attack that hits an enemy at a range and deals extra automatic damage to Creatures of Darkness.

This quest seems to simplify it even further by not even tying charms to particular Abilities. It also requires, with how its damage and health system works, at least five normal hits, or three hits by someone using a damage-boosting effect to actually down an exalt. That's 3/2 and 1/1 for heroic and non-heroic mortals, respectively.

That means that a lot of the meta assumptions of 2e - perfect defenses OR YOU DIE, surprise negators OR YOU DIE, and so forth - are a lot less relevant, just based on what we've already seen of the system.

Does that make sense?
>>
>>30462617
This.

Plus I know the guy running it, and he's never been a fan of those OR YOU DIE things. It's all supposed to be fun.
>>
>>30462617
>>30462734
Huh. Ok.

And looking over Qwixalted, charge states 6 powers not 5, but eh.

If we don't run under paranoia combat then more room and faster gamplay to get to the fun stuff of social fu and onther neat charms that are now not mandatory. something like Hardship Surviving so we don't need special clothes, Charms that allow you not to change your physical state unless you want to, thus no need for potty breaks, meals, haircuts, or waxing...

Quality of life stuff that usually gets dropped in favour of the absolutely necessary stuff.

I still think we should get something like Swallow the Sun so we don't show our anima whenever we do something nice. I am uncomfortable with broadcasting Anathema here sign that attracts the wyld hunt.
>>
>>30462938
> that are now not mandatory
that are now not discarded for the mandatory

gah.
>>
>>30462938
That's totally fair, and I agree that it's one of the things we should pick up, if it's even a thing (I hope it's not because it's REALLY stepping on the Night caste's toes). But before that, I really want a soak charm that might help us survive another direct confrontation with the enemies at our doorstep.
>>
>>30462938
>Swallow the Sun
Which publication is that in, again? I'm having trouble tracking it down.
>>
>>30462938
>I am uncomfortable with broadcasting Anathema here sign that attracts the wyld hunt.
As am I. The citizens are already pretty wary of us, so we need to keep our glorious golden goddess powers in check.

Or distract them with delicious brown abs and butt.
>>
>>30463001
Swallow the Sun is for everyone in 2e

Of course i am talking here with my limited 2e knowledge since that is all i have to fall back upon.

Swallow the Sun to not show our anima and Hardship Survival Mendicant Spirt so we can go fuck environmental conditions we go where we please how we please.

These two things i want as soon as we have some defenses and a bit more social fu, so we can walk anywhere we please.

Perhaps some transportation an communication charms but eh, far later own the road.
>>
>>30463152
And I'm saying I dislike Swallow the Sun as a charm concept. I think it steps WAY too much on the toes of the Night Caste anima effect. I don't think any anima effect should be essentially redundant in the face of a charm.

Us broadcasting that we are Zenith, high priest of the Unconquered Sun himself is, in my mind, a drawback that validates the Night anime effect existing.
>>
>>30463064
>Which publication is that in, again? I'm having trouble tracking it down.

Glories of the Most High.

another thing that might be useful if this was 2e would be Deft Hand Deflection found in Abyssals as a Solar mirror to one of their charms that is basically a PD for ranged attack.
>>
>>30463217
Didn't really want to wade into this discussion, but just wanted to throw my support behind this.
>>
>>30463217
Its one thing to hie your anima so you are not recognize as a anathema. Its another thing entirely to have yourself stealthed as long as your anima is not seen. Swallow the Sun allows a night caste to stay hidden even if his anima flares.
>>
>>30463217
>>30463152
I really do not see the conflict here. Can someone illuminate me?
>>
Wow. Probably 20 minutes before EF gets back and we're already on page 9...what the hell guys? If you're going to have a long, drawn out discussion while we're trying to keep a thread bumped so it can be finished later you could at least take it to the QTG. I mean, yes that's a cesspool of vile vitriol, but now we're probably getting 1-2 posts instead of maybe 3-4. Man, I'm bummed now.

SWALLOWING THE SUN
Cost: 2wp, 1hl; Mins: Stealth 4, Essence 3;
Type: Simple (Speed 3, DV -2)
Keywords: Combo-OK, Mirror (Oblivion-
Consigned Essence), Obvious
Duration: Instant
Prerequisite Charms: None
Uniting her mind and Essence in a supreme act
of will, the Lawgiver snuffs out her own radiance
by drawing her anima banner into her body and
extinguishing it. Further expenditures flare the
banner from the beginning, as though the Solar
had not previously spent any Peripheral Essence in the scene.
>>
>>30463372
That's pretty salty of you.
>>
>>30463316
...I honestly don't understand what point you're trying to make. I'm saying I really dislike that there's even an option to negate anima flaring for castes other than Night. I think that any charm that does so steps far too much on the Night Caste's toes, in the same way a charm that allows Solars to learn Lunar charms would step too much on Eclipses' toes. I think it's bad design, invalidates castes as a concept, and should be avoided at all costs.

>>30463349
Every Caste gets one or more unique ability special to them. Eclipse Caste gets spiritual diplomatic immunity, the ability to learn other splats' charms, and the ability to sanctify an oath or agreement that brings horrible luck on those who break it, for example.

Night Caste's anima effect is to spend a little extra essence to keep essence expenditures from flaring their Anima - that big glowing corona and symbol on our forehead that gives us away as a Solar. That's their special bonus that makes them really attractive for anyone who wants to hide their status.

Swallow the Sun lets you suck your anima back into yourself once it starts flaring. It doesn't COMPLETELY step on the toes of the Night Caste anima, but it makes their anima effect a lot less relevant, and really does intrude on its territory quite a bit. I don't like that it exists, because it and charms like it make your choice of caste far less relevant.

Make sense?

>>30463372
New thread then?
>>
>>30463455
The QM is only making one post when he returns, and even then only if the thread is live.
>>
By the way, here's the quest archive. Remember to vote it up if you've been enjoying it, a lot of QMs use the amount of votes their threads receive as feedback, and it keeps them from being deleted from the archive too:

>>30463451
Ah so this is a thematic dispute on where to go with our Zenith then. Well then i would like to take Swallow the Sun as it allows us to go into the realm and preach there if we want without having wyld hunts.

A Night can also get a Charm to Sanctify the Dead. So i don't see any problems. Anima are innate and Charms are bought. You buy the Charms to suit the situation you are or will be in. If we need Swallow the Sun we will get it. If a Night Caste would need to be able to Sanctify the dead she would take the necessary charm, if she fights or tries to attrite a undead army.
>>
>>30463656
>A Night can also get a Charm to Sanctify the Dead.
I also dislike that.

I like for each caste to have at least one little tiny niche that no other caste can touch, regardless of what charms they take. I like Zeniths getting to incinerate the dead, be high priests of the Sun, and so forth. I like Nights being the only ones who can hide their anima.

I like for your choice of caste, no matter what charms you take, to allow you a special ability that nobody else gets, and prevent you from having that unique talent that the others got. I like the idea that, when you choose one path, at least part of the others closes to you forever.

And, as a result, I completely dislike Swallow the Sun. Is it useful? Absolutely. It's useful as FUCK. But I dislike it for what it represents, and what it means for choices regarding caste.
>>
>>30463782
They're probably intended for games with no Night Caste or no Zenith Caste or whatever where you still want the party to have access to the ability.

You're not supposed to take Swallow the Sun if your game has or may be getting a Night Caste.
>>
>>30463372
when the QM left we were around 290 posts, and he said when he gets back he's wrapping up
>>
>>30463985
Or you take it if your entire party is in the Realm.

Of course the Night Caste will always make a better spy regardless of you having or not Swallow the Sun but he would rather you have it so you do not give away the circles presence.
>>
>>30464233
You know how else you can "do not give away the circle's presence"?

By not being the typical, autistic, cunt of a solar that got them all killed in the first place.
>>
>>30464280
Solars as a rule are autistic cunts...
>>
>>30463985
>>30464233
Alternatively, you can 'not give away your circle's presence' by sticking only to your Personal essence pool and relying on stunts and respiration to keep motes in it. You know, actually force them to keep themselves low-key in order to keep under cover. I think that fits a LOT more, and it in no way invalidates the Night Caste anima effect.
>>
However we have two requests to keep a lower profile so Swallow the Sun is somewhat thematic to our progress thus far.

We of course will be idiotic about it and then go about and bench press a wall. Anima or no anima that shit is not normal, and dragonblooded are most likely known considering their low numbers in the Abyssal fight.
