It has been nearly a decade since the war over the Red Sea finally came to a bloody end. Though the nations which took place claim peace and the arms of each military have been reduced, the embers of war still glow hot, and any minute more conflict could disrupt the hard earned peace that many bloody hands worked to build.

You yourself fought on the front lines during many a battle. You tasted the steely air and felt the burning passions that erupt during those terrible brawls. Sadly, the only thing you came home with was a pocket full of coin and a few scars. Life is hard in the post-war age. Jobs are hard to come by, and many men you once knew have either ended up in the gutters, swept aside by society, or have taken up new banners and still earn their meals through bloody work.

But before we continue your story, let's recall your past. You were born in the early days of air travel, when the ships that conquer the skies were seen as a hope for the future. When the war broke out nearly twenty years ago, you falsified your age and enlisted, in hopes of seeing the world. And see it you did, in all it's terrible glory. You served your time as:

You walk along the metal walkway, rolling a wooden barrel alongside your work buddy. You don't recall his name, and nothing today has made you think he cares to share it. As you load the barrel onto the ship, you stand upright and stretch your back. You think you're starting to develop a hunch. You should ask to switch jobs sometime, not that the foreman will comply. You hear the end-of-day bell ring in the distance, and dust your hands off before making your way back down to the dock. Your work buddy splits off and heads straight for the gate without a word. You yawn and look up to the orange sky. The sun will set in an hour or so. You remove your work gloves and tuck them into your belt, before reaching into your pocket. You find:

The shell is stout and made of copper. The end, once home to it's charge, is charred black from the heat that it once expended. You place the chain around your neck. The foremen won't allow things like this to be worn during work hours. They say that they increase likelihood of injury. You think privately though, that they only wish to enforce uniformity among the workmen.

Your stomach rumbles. You haven't eaten since last night, and hauling those barrels is hungry work. You think it's about time to get something to eat. Sadly, you only have a few copper coins until payday.

You tuck the shotshell into your shirt and make your way to the gate. You join the herd of sweaty, dirty men in the outflow. The lot of you pour out of the gate, and then move on in your respective directions. You turn left and head down the road a bit, before turning onto a cobblestone street. As you walk, you pass the cramped houses of a thousand working families. The dirt coated children play on the narrow sidewalks while their parents break their backs for meager pay. The way things work now, a man will take just about any job to keep his family in clothes and cans of mash. You yourself have the good fortune to be completely lonely, and without any other mouths to feed.

You find your building, a tall and skinny pile of haphazardly assembled brick and wood. It lies squeezed between a saloon and another, slightly less filthy tenement. You open the front door and head inside. As you ascend the staircase, you can hear wives shouting at their husbands, children crying, and dogs barking. Dogs aren't allowed in the building, or so says the landlord. Your room is on the fourth floor. The door is built from plywood, and barely keeps out the chill from the hall on the worst nights. When you enter, the familiar stench of your own unwashed body and mildew hit you. You remove your work shirt and boots, then walk over to the small pantry to see what you've got left. Inside, there is a paper bag holding a single biscuit, and a can of cold beans. You feel your stomach growl again.

You take the can and shake it. Mostly water. In the drawer near the sink, broken, you find a pen knife. With it you cut open the can and look inside. The brown, pale beans soak in the preservative water. You then find a spoon and begins eating. There is no source of reliable heat in your room, as the landlord saw it fair to stiff you out of it since you have nobody to cook for. Still, your room is the only one with an window that opens, to vent out the heat in the summer. So that's something.

You finish your meal and dump out the liquid from the can before tossing it in the garbage. It's just after dark now. You'll have to get up early if you want to get a decent job at the dock tomorrow, but you aren't necessarily tired.

You throw on another shirt, the only other one you have, and put your boots back on. As you leave the room and lock your door, you hear the landlord shouting two floors up. You can't see from here, but you can tell he is asking some poor woman to pay up overdue rent. You recall hearing that some man left his wife here to join the military, and was never heard from again. That kind of story is often told. Men lie about enlisting to shed their debts and take up new names elsewhere. You sort of became numb to it.

The landlord's voice rises as the woman attempts to bargain an extension. He demands to be payed tonight, or else he'll see her on the street before morning.

You sigh and turn around, making your way up the staircase. You pass by a young boy, not even old enough to work as a pushbroom. He sits in the corner, playing with a wooden marble. He bounces it on the ground, seemingly hypnotized by it. Likely he belongs to one of the families here.

When you reach the floor with the landlord and woman, you notice he has become a deep red. He likely hasn't taken a good breath in the last few minutes. You approach.

Despite his angry disposition, you know him to be more than reasonable deep down. You ask him what the problem is, and why it's important enough to wake the owls.

He explains that the woman's rent is three months past due. She owes nearly ten silver in back rent, and if she isn't going to pay it, he'll find someone else who will. You look over to the woman. She is thin, and shaking. She looks to have skipped many a meal. Her hair is greying prematurely, and her eyes are red and swollen from tears.

He grumbles, and looks at the woman, but agrees to give her one more week before he throws her belongings out into the street. You smile and pat him on the back, leading him down the stairs to the front door. Just as you reach the steps, you look back over your shoulder and see the woman wiping her eyes and watching you go.

Later, at the saloon next door, you find yourself out of coin and four cups deep. The landlord is talking the bartender's ear off about something or other. You look up to the clock over the bar and see that it's nearly 20:00. There's no way you'll get to work early enough to get a machine job now. The bartender leans over to you and speaks.

"I heard about that woman you helped earlier. One of my waitresses has her ear to the ground. How about I pour you one more."

You raise your hand and thank the bartender for his generosity, but decline the offer. He smiles and walks away. Without much else to do, you think it might be time to head home. You step down from the barstool and wobble toward the door. Outside, the cold night air works to sober you up little by little. You wipe your forehead and yawn. There still appear to be some people out and about. Vagrants, no doubt. When you turn toward your building, you notice the young boy from earlier that night. He is still playing with the wooden marble. He doesn't seem too affected by the cold, staring intently at his toy as it bounces on the stone floor with light taps.

You express the dangers of the night to the boy. He continues to look away nervously. You stand up and raise your voice to him, commanding him to get gone from here and get somewhere safe. He stands cautiously, and begins walking away, looking back at you the whole time. You sigh and head inside.

You make your way up to your room and enter. You throw off your shirt and boots and plop down on your rickety bed. You put your face in your hands and rub them all around. No pay for three more days, and not a coin to live on until then. You reach under your mattress and grab what hides beneath it. You pull out an old war model rifle. A two foot long iron and wood affair with your old company emblem burned into the stock. You swing the lever down and look inside the chamber. Two shotshells still inside, ready to rip open some poor bastard. You hear people buy this sort of thing as antiques now, since the government no longer produces them for military use. They mostly work with easier to load models. Some gullible fools even think they're secretly working on rifles that can fire shells rapidly with a single squeeze of the trigger. Some people will believe anything.

You tuck the rifle back under your mattress before removing your trousers and laying down on the bed. You lay on your folded hands, staring at the ceiling.

You find yourself standing back at the wheel of a war slider. Your old perch. These things were built for speed and stealth. Though you turn the wheel and fiddle with the altitude dial, the ship seems to be set in it's course. You float dreamily through the sky, watching as sharp mountain peaks drift by. The hum of the engines is soothing in it's low presence. As you stand, peering out through the windshield, you hear a slight commotion from topside. You wish you could turn around and peek up through the hatch, but the crags around you demand all your focus to navigate.

His eagerness to prove his skill shines as he stands from his seat and walks over. you slow the ship's speed and pass the wheel to him. You were nervous about being assigned someone so new for this mission, but you can see that his skill isn't lacking in the slightest. You tell him to be careful controlling the ship, and tell him you'll be back in just a minute to check on him. You climb the metal ladder at the rear of the cockpit and open up the hatch. You climb up onto the deck and look around. The men seem to be scurrying here and there, and many of them are peering over the port side of the ship.

You approach the side of the ship and ask the men what the cause of their curiosity is. One of them turns to salute you, and informs you that one of the other ships on the mission seems to have crashed into the crags. Your heart sinks a bit. You look out over the side of the ship and search the sky. Black smoke. A damaged engine, most like. One of the crew mentions seeing no flare, and assumes the crew must have been taken out in a blast. The other ships are too far away to investigate the wreck, but too much time wasted turning back may jeopardize the entire operation.

They look at you cross, but your fib seems to be enough to convince them. They head back up and seal the hatch behind them. When you finish wheeling the ship around, you put more steam to it and head back the way you came. You nervously weave through the stone crags for about an hour, and eventually come to the smoking wreckage of an allied ship. You can see it in the distance through the windshield. There does indeed seem to be awful damage to the engine. You'd be shocked to find out it was even salvageable.

While he does so, you pull together a handfull of men to swing over to the ship on the boarding wires and check it out. They seem conflicted, but follow orders nonetheless. The marines aboard the ship don't seem too keen to join the search, and you can overhear them groaning about wasting so much time pulling cooked corpses out of a hunk of twisted steel.

When the party has been assembled and equipped, the lookout calls down, informing you that there does seem to be something in the wreck, trying to get out, but the smoke prevents a clear view. The ship is now drawing closer, as you slide in to boarding distance.

You order the men to stay a minute while you head over to check the ship. You swing on the end of the wire and touch down on the side of the vessel. It is stuck, smashed against the side of a crag. The footing is uneven, and you don't think it'll keep it's balance for very long. Any work to be done must be done quickly and carefully. As you traverse the smoky deck, careful not to slip and tumble over the side, you see the bodies of a few of the marines splayed out on the floor. They seem to be surrounding the hatch down into the engine room.

You head down to the engine room. Halfway down, the ladder is torn right in half, and you're forced to drop the rest of the way. You look around the smokey room, searching for any survivors. Instead, you find the damaged engine which must have caused this accident. It still seems to be moving, trying to propel the ship forward despite irreparable damage.

You call up to the crew and warn them about the torn ladder. Despite the damage, it would still be easier to do a simple pull-up and climb it than to shimmy up a rope. That out of the way, you turn to the damaged engine and have a look. You don't really know much about these things, having only skimmed enough of the manual to pass your pilot's test. What you can surmise is that something tore a hole in the side of the thing, and the pressure ripped it wide open. The hear must have caught the interior of the ship on fire. Looking over to the other side of the room, there does appear to be a machinist who was caught in the blast, and now sits cooked by it.

You can't tell much more about the engine, and time is slipping by.

You call for a machinist. One of them drops down and you point the engine out to him. He straps on his goggles and begins checking it out, telling you to go about your business while he gives it a once over. You nod and head down to the cargo hold. The ladder isn't damaged this time, and you slide right down. The lanterns here have been blown out, and there is no natural sunlight like the engine room. You are forced to carefully feel your way around.

Eventually you come to a broken crate. The wooden walls seem to have been cracked open with some sort of hammer. The inside holds little more than a couple of tin cans. Your first thought is a stowaway. But there's no telling where they are now.

You continue searching the cargo hold. To your surprise, you find more crates, similar to the first. They were all broken open, and all contain empty mash cans. Things are starting to smell.

Before you can give it another though, you feel a huge jerk, and the entire ship shifts to one side. You struggle to stay standing, and manage to get to one knee. Time is about up.

You climb back up to the engine room. The machinist looks over to you and flips up his goggles. He tells you that the engine wasn't blown naturally. His guess is that a charge was set on it, and the crew didn't discover them. The ship shakes again, and you order him to head back, along with the rest of the crew. He nods and climbs up to the deck. You can hear him shouting at everyone to head back.

The only places left to check are the cockpit and the quarters.

You examine the nearest one, and find no injuries on him. When you stand back up, you see the pilot propped up against the wheel. At first, he seems just as dead is his mates, but them you see him shift slightly.

You draw closer to the wheel of the ship. You feel more swaying. When you reach it, you look down at the pilot. He moves, but barely. You kneel down and pull him off of the wheel, checking him for injury. He seems unharmed, and yet is clearly fading fast. He opens his eyes just wide enough to make you out, and tries feebly to grab at your sleeve. His grip is that of a sick child. You ask him what went on.

He tells you that something stowed aboard the ship, and sprung an attack. Your suspicions are confirmed.

You ask if the saboteur was from the enemy army. He only manages a weak shake of his head before you see his eyes begin to cross, and he goes limp. You try to wake him, shaking him and smacking his cheek, but it's no use. You lay him down on the deck, and begin standing up.

You hear a loud clang, and turn around quickly. The source appears to have been a wrench that fell from a shelf. The room is still and silent, save for the low creaking of the ship. The door back out of the cockpit seems to have been opened slightly wider than you left it, but you can't tell if it's truly different, or just paranoia.

You continue checking the room for any survivors or clues as to the goings on. You notice two marines, leaning oddly up against one of the system panels. The readouts, all at zero, have been cracked in some places. It looks as though someone drove a nail through the glass. The two marines are pressed up against the panel, rifles still in hand. They are long gone.

You examine the rifles more closely. Only one of them is loaded, the other having spent its shells. It contains only one useable shell, which you load into the chamber. When you stand back up, you hear the door to the cockpit swing open. When you turn back, you see a strange black blur streak across the room toward you. You raise the rifle in defense, but are too slow. Whatever it is strikes your chest and sends you tumbling back, over the railing, and onto the deck. You try to get back up quickly, but the ship shakes again, this time more violently than ever. You feel yourself sliding across the floor as the ship finally looses its grip on the side of the rocky mountain, and for a brief second you are floating in mid air. With a great lurch and a long scraping of metal on stone, the wrecked ship pulls free of the rock and you are sent careening down into the chasm below.
