You drifted off to sleep hours ago, listening to your great uncle speak about the way things once were, and now the way they have always been. Aeons ago the world was different, you dream of glittering spires rising high above the monster filled wildlands, glittering bridges powered by the might of the god-kings who once ruled the world. The dream quickly descends into nightmare, the towers fall, searing pain lances up your arms as you bolt awake.

You see the village around you, built around the trees and old ruins that the founders of the village a few generations ago had been unable to clear out. The air has a brisk chill to it, and the fire pit you fell asleep beside has long gone cold. As you wipe the bleariness from your eyes, your brain finally starts to catch up with wakefulness. Who is this doing all the observing for example?

'SELENA! GET OVER HERE'
Oh right, that's it. Selena Psytand. You manage to stand up to your full 5'2” tall. Your red hair is cut short, almost bald even, due to the fresh tattoos running up your arms and neck to the base of your skull. They're covered in bandages right now, but they still sting. About 10 meters away, near the village center is your mother. The woman bears the same marks that you now bear under your bandages. The middle aged woman is of an athletic build, and nearly a head and a half taller than you, though as the stares of every male in the village most days attest to, you make up for in other ways.

Rubbing the sleep from your eyes you walk over to your mother. The Tall athletic woman is standing next to the village Avatar, a massive brutish statue with 3 eyes and 8 arms, each armed with an ancient, but well cared for weapon. Someday it'll be yours, when then thing finally sucks the last of your mother's soul of her.

“How are you feeling? I remember getting the marks when I turned 16. Hurt for days and itched for weeks after that. The elder I had wasn't very good at putting them in. But don't worry. Look, you can have the day off from your usual chores,” which mostly consisted of gathering from the fields that surrounded the town or keeping watch on the tree line beyond the fields for anything that threatened the village, 'but for today you can have it off. Tomorrow we'll begin practice with Garmaniz here.” She pats the massive Avatar beside her with one rough hand.

Wat do?
>[]Ask questions of your mother? (Top 3 get asked)

>[]Go to the village inn and see if any traders have come in? You remember talk of them from the previous day.

“I'm going to head to the Inn then,” You say, you always loved the stories the Traders told, sometimes they even came in with an Avatar Pilot or two, though usually they were defended only by wards and mercenaries, traders were rare. Once a month they usually came in.

“Fine, but I don't want you bothering them. The village elders will want to get the best deal, and we don't need you being the cause of driving them off like the villias boys did last month. We're running low on materials to repair Garmaniz with, and these guys might have what we need.”

As you start to head off, you hear her call out behind you, “AND IF I FIND OUT THIS IS A LIE SO YOU CAN GO OFF EXPLORING THE FOREST AGAIN I'LL HAVE YOUR HIDE! YOU HERE ME MISSY!” but it's a good natured shout.

The Village Inn is more of a large tent extending out from a cave like structure carved into an ancient dead tree. Smoke curls up from the broken and blackened hollow trunk from the cooking fires inside of it. The Innkeeper is a good natured man, and a fantastic cook with a large family who all work at the Inn. You can see his two youngest unpacking the large hairy rock-ape beasts that carry the trader's personal effects, his eldest, a young man by the name of Jacob, is talking with a dark skinned man next to a large cart filled with crates and packages. The dark skinned man, probably the trader, is missing both his eyes, though a pair of spell-tattoos on his forehead probably enable him to see just fine. Some coin changes hands, and he walks into the inn, as Jacob leads the pair off.

At that moment, you hear shouts coming from within the inn. “That's impossible!”
“Must be the drake's blood your kind drink.”
“I'm telling you-”

And so on, between the shouting voices and the distance, it's impossible to tell what they're arguing over.

Yes actually. In the satchel hanging from your belt you have some broken bits of divine magics taken from the ruins. They're worthless to you and to everyone in the village, but to people in the big cities, the academies and the avatar foundries, they can be worth quite a bit.
>You have 3 carved bits of rock and quartz that glow gently when you hold them, the designs on them hurt to look at too much. They were taken from wreckage found just past the tree line.

You also have 10 copper coins. Earned and scrounged.

Finally you have a good bronze dagger, the edge very sharp, and the handle wrapped in died leather. Your Great Uncle gave it to you as a present last night just before you fell asleep when he was done with the tattoos.

The Crowd inside is all gathered around one of the men from the trading group, a mercenary by the looks of his scars and the weapons hanging from his belt and bandolier. The sandy haired man is arguing with one of the village's hunters, a man missing his pinky and ring finger from his right hand out in the forest, as well a nurmerous other scars covering his body under the leather and fur hunter's outfit he wears.
“I've been up and down the trade road nearly 3 days out, there are no other paths leading off of it. And certainly not to ruins of the old ones.”
“And I'm telling you it's out there. I stumbled across them last night while on watch! And they were lit up! I'm telling you, there's something going on out near your village you dumb bumpkin and you'd be wise to-”
“BUMPKIN!?!” The hunter shouts as several of his friends grab onto him before he's able to leap at the mercenary. The sandy haired outside in turn nearly falls out of his chair, spilling his drink as he tries to get away from the livid hunter. “Look, if you're too stupid to find something out there, that's not my fault, but I found them! This map I was sold in Dravidan says it was near here and I managed to find it! There could be all kinds of treasures in an active ruin, I'd even lead you-”

“Jamal, enough.” A deep, gravely voice says over the arguing of the crowd. It's the blind, darkskinned man. He walks over and hoists the mercenary to his feet. “I didn't bring you here to rile the locals. You're here to guard my goods. Now get off your drunken ass and do it.” he bows to the hunter. “I apologize for his behavior. I'll see my man out.” The hunter in turn shrugs angrily, but doesn't make any more of it.

>cont
>>
>>30466919

You also find the tale curious, you're pretty sure there'd be tales of a ruin near by if there was one, but really, even the hunters stuck to within a few minutes walk of the main trade road or at best an hours walk into the forest beyond the town... and an active ruin nearby was enough to make anyone nervous. That kind of talk, at best, would attract adventurers, grave-robbers and ne’er-do-wells that they were, and at worst meant that something, or someone, had woken up something that shouldn't be disturbed within striking distance of the village, neither boded well.

Do you
>[] go talk to the traders about this map and the ruins?

>[] talk with the hunter?
>[] leave and head somewhere else? (Where? The shrine? Outside the town? The fields?)

You manage to quickly cut through the crowd, no easy feat given your rather considerable 'assets'. You manage to get to the tables where the traders have managed to set up away from the now rather surly crowd of locals. The blind trader looks up at you, the spell-tattoo eyes focusing on you despite being unmoving glowing ink. "Yes, can we help you young lady?" He asks, his voice smoother now that he's not trying to talk over an arguing crowd.

"About the ruins... uh..."

>How do you want to approach this? You can offer to trade for the map, or just ask general questions and try to discern the location of the ruins yourself from them, or something else. Feel free to write dialogue or just give me a general direction.

The trader looks up at you, his inked on eyes scanning you up and down slowly before quirking an eyebrow above one of his empty eyesockets. “Why would you want that?' Jamal next to him looks nervous, “Look it's my map shouldn't I-”
“Shut up Jamal”
“Right boss.”

“Again, why would a young woman like you want access to some ancient ruins?” You taps his fingers against his chin as he continues, “Normally people in places like this want to avoid ruins like the plague... they're all supertiscious of them, for good reason. Especially young villages, your elders probably still remember what happened to the village that came before this one. We walked through the over grown ruins on our way here, and you especially,” he gestures at the bandages up and down your arms, “You're to be the future avatar pilot here aren't you? I'd think someone like you would be in a place of honor and importance here, no reason for you to go risking life and limb in something as unsavory as adventuring?”

There are several ways you can respond to this.
>Are you out to make your fortune on the plunder of ancient ruins despite the risks?
>Do you want to hunt down a possible threat to your home before it can threaten all you know and love?
>Do you want to take the chance to prove yourself as more than the spare for your mother as an avatar pilot?
>Do you just want to escape from a village where your future is pretty much already set in stone?
>Something else? Perhaps a combination of the above? Again, feel free to write in the dialogue if you like.

“Look, I just want out of here alright?” You whisper to the Trader, “Sure, I got the tattoos, but right now? I'm just a spare part for the village Avatar, for when my mom dies or can't operate it anymore. Do you know what it's like to have your future set in stone like that?

Jamal looks at the trader, whose head turns a bit to look at him in turn, “That's a fine story and all, but what can you give us to propel you to fame and glory outside of your village?” he quirks an eyebrow. “I don't think your parents would be very appreciative of me helping you escape? Let alone your entire village. We got to make a living here, and your village is on the trade route. So either you give me,”

“It's my damn map boss.”

“Us.” he corrects himself without even a glance at the mercenary Jamal. “something for the map... or well, I don't think we can do business. Surely you can agree that's fair?”

>Do you offer something to the Trader?
>Do you leave to find another way to get the map?
>Do you want to find out what else he has?

>>
>>30468340
>>Do you want to find out what else he has?

>>30468707
"Before I say that, what else do you have for sale?" You ask, giving the man a steady look, or try to, it's hard to tell whether to stare into his empty eyesockets or the spell-tattoo'd eyes above them.

"Ah, we bring mostly metals, a few divine trinkets, some books and maps if you're interested in those, but I dunno if you're even literate" You are barely literate, you can do sums and read basic characters, but you're not exactly a scholar or accountant.

"We also have materials for repairing avatars... blessed stone and sand, ensouled quartz, and other gems..."

"finally, for the enterprising adventurer, we have adventuring supplies... a set of leather armor, some weapons, water skin, medicine kit, rope." he laughs, "never met an adventurer who didn't like his rope, not to mention some glow stones for lighting."

"Now, what do you have to trade in turn? If we're going to barter, let's barter."

>Show him everything you have to trade?
>Show him just the coins you have, not the broken divine magic

You pull out the money and the broken shards of divine magic, setting them down infront of the man. Who looks surprised, not very surprised, but just a little. “Hmm... yes... would you say these are worth the price of the map?” He looks over at Jamal whose mouth is wide open, “Uh... yeah! YEAH!” He says, maybe a little too eagerly as he reaches for the goods, his other hand sliding down into his pocket to pull out a water proof tube.

Your own hand slams down on your stuff before he can grab it.

"It's worth more than just the map, what else can you offer me for these three pieces?"

The trader gives Jamal a poisonous look before his smile reasserts itself, "Hmm... I'll throw in some climbing gear, and a glow stone for 2 of those divine magic pieces. The third stone pays for the map. Unless you want something else?"

>take the deal or continue to haggle? And what do you haggle for if we're going on adventure?

"Throw in the leather armor and the medical kit and we're good."

The trader seems to mull this over. “Seem like a fair price to you Jamal? Half the worth of the broken bit of magic for your map.” Jamal tries to speak, then grumbles, “Let me make a copy of it and we're good alright?” He puts the map down on the table and begins to unroll it, pulling out another piece of parchment with it and a bit of charcoal to begin copying it. The Trader begins pointing to places on it.

“The Great city of Dravidan is here” he points at the three spired mark in the top left hand corner. “The White Tooth river is this, and here,” he points at the dot just below of the river, “is where the village before this one was. The ruins were just beyond it. Here,” he points at the circle. “Your village would be here” he points just down the road from where the split to the ruins is. “It's not accurate, but it'll give you an idea of where to go. Just keep an eye out. The road opens up into a clearing here, probably was once a cross roads before the old empires fell apart. It's about 2, maybe 3, hours out on foot.”

He smiles, “now, if you'll walk with me, we'll get you in that armor, climbing gear, glow stone, and the medical kit.”

Within moments, assuming you don't prevent the mercenary from making a copy of the map, you're kitted out in the leather armor, it's well made, and recently oiled. New from the city. It protects your vitals, but it still leaves room to move in easily. It presses uncomfortably tight around your chest, it was obviously not made for someone with your particular assets in mind.

>Do you guys head out immediately? Or do you want to do something else? Speak with your mother or great uncle? Or gather up supplies from your home before heading out? What supplies?

Map in hand, you quickly strip out of the armor and disguise it as a parcel. From there you quickly head home, dodging around the square where your mother is still working with the village Avatar. You know food, water, rope, and a tent will all be necessary to get. You know the hunters have special tents that help them hide in the wilderness from the things out there, but getting one from them might be difficult. A simple oiled sheet however should be simple enough to get if you want to risk it.

The Food and Water are easy enough to get. You manage to get a little over a week's food (if you ration yourself) and a proper backpack, plus a water skin, though that one you own properly. It was a gift from your father the day you were old enough to take on proper chores, about two years before he disappeared into the murk of the forest. Rope is easy enough to get as well, stealing it from the weaver's tents. The area is frequented often however this early in the day. It won't calm down until evening.

>I need a roll (best 3 of 1d100 rolls) if you're going to try and sneakily steal some rope.
>You can also try to straight up buy some, but word will get around in such a small village.

You manage to get close to the weavers' tent. You manage to slip a roll of hemp rope behind you just in time. A voice calls out to you. “Selena!” One of the weavers walks up to you, an old woman, she was universally known in the village as “Granny” she pulled double duty as midwife during births, and doctor when your Great Uncle and his apprentices were too busy with other affairs to see to minor sickness and injury. “How are your tattoos doing? Are you keeping your bandages clean and changed?”

“Yes granny.” You say, smiling perhaps a little too broadly as you keep the roll or rope hidden behind your back. “Great Uncle told me before he gave them to me all about keeping them clean so the rot doesn't set in.”

Granny smiles and nods, “If the pain or the itch gets to be too much hun, just come by my home, I've got some ointments to help with that, your mother was too mule headed when she was your age to accept them then, but I won't take no for an answer from you. You're too important deary.” she pats your face and nods. She pauses for a moment, as if to consider something, mouthing some words. You put up with her for a few minutes, making polite conversation. Feeling more and more nervous as time goes on. Finally though it gets to be too much and you take your chance at the next break in the conversation.

"Granny, I appreciate the thought, but I need to be going." You give her a swift, one armed hug as she looks at you bemusedly and nods.

"Alrighty dear, go on then. We'll talk another time!"

You manage to get away without incident.

You can get an oiled blanket for a tent easily enough from your own home, or you can try to steal one from the hunter's supplies near the front gates as you leave. But it's heavily guarded, both at day and night since it's also where weapons and some of the more dangerous items are kept (things used to help hold off monster attacks while the village Avatar is being prepped).

The guard on the tent is a young man, and one of your admirers. While it's not possible to fully flash him given how your bandages are set up, leaning over far enough and posing suggestively gets him to come close enough for you to get him into a slightly secluded area and slam his head against the wall of the hunter's supply house. 5 minutes later a hunter's tent is in your backpack, and you're out the front gates, heading towards the ancient cross roads, and from there, hopefully, to the ruins.

Post any ideas on how Selena passes the time on the walk, or questions on the setting while I'm gone, I'll be back shortly with any luck.

Practicing slashing around with the knife. Also, do we know magic?
>>
>>30473006
You get in some practice while walking with the knife, getting used to the size and weight of it. You practiced with knife fighting as a child early on, it was a survival skill, and part of the arts of it would be of use when you grew up and took over your Mother's Avatar.

Magic however is an entirely different kettle of tea. The most common type of magic, Divine Magic, is all tied up in artefacts from the old empire that once covered the entire world in their glittering towers. Before the fall. Avatars are a product of it. Magic is possible to use while inside of an avatar, or while using a divine magic piece, intact versions unlike the ones you sold for the map and supplies.

Arcane magic is something controlled only by a very few. People born with the blood of the gods running in their veins. They often go mad from the visions, and Avatars come to life and attempt to kill them unless placated by their pilot when near a mage-blood. They tend to congregate in the big cities where they can be protected from Avatars and other Divine Magics that go haywire and attempt to kill them, at least the ones who survive long enough to get to a large city.

There are also warlocks out in the jungles, those who steal the divine essence from animals, stones, and people, turning them into lifeless dust in the process, and then channeling their distorted souls into controllable beasts and summoned things, or burning them off to use in rituals. It is for good reason Warlocks are feared and hated.

You mull all of these things over as you walk towards the cross roads. It takes a little over 3 hours to get there, and the sun is high in the sky above the wide paved stone road. Most of the paving stones are cracked and roots and small plants grow in them. It is a relic of the old empire, linking two of the great cities together. Dravidan in the direction you are headed, across the White Tooth River, and far past your village, traders speak of a mountain beside the ocean where one of the last towers stands, where a sky bridge crosses the ocean to another tower far across the ocean. But no one in your village has ever been there.

The cross roads is only well traveled in two directions. If you had not been told it was once a cross roads, you might have just mistaken it for a large clearing. The entire area is torn up, the paving stones cracked and scattered between the two sections of road at either end of it. As if someone deliberately sought to remove any evidence that there had once been an intersection of roads.

I takes another hour of searching in the near by forest to find the remnants of the road leading to the ruins that Jamal spoke of. It is incredibly over grown, covered with trees. Without travel of any kind for centuries, the roots of the forest have all but completely erased it. It's nearly a quarter mile away from the original crossroads, and you'd never have found it without knowing to look for it.

>Do you spend time carefully marking a trail back to the cross roads? As well as along the route you take? This will slow you down as the wood is tough to carve, and you have to score it deeply as the forest is fast growing and the trees are fast healing in this wood.

You decide to press on to the ruins. You deeply score every tree you pass, marking each of them with a large slash, sometimes having difficulty pulling your dagger free.

You keep on the overgrown road for some time. The noon day sun quickly begins to sink further and further, and the evening stars begin to be seen. At that moment you manage to break through the tree line, and find yourself in a plaza of sorts. Veins of sickly purple divine magic run up and down the trees in this place, and each tree seems to have been carefully and exquisitely carved from solid obsidian. You've seen things made of the stone, traders said it was made from the molten blood of the earth, but it apparently doesn't happen frequently around here.

As you move into the ruins. You come to a central area, a pedastal with a great glowing gem orb the size of your home back in the city. Looking at it for too long makes your eyes hurt. There are 3 directions you can head, not including the obsidian forest you just left.

>head right past the large gem orb, there's some kind of temple back there. Perhaps it has what you're looking for?

>Head right, into what looks like a series of homes and buildings, all stacked ontop of each other like cubes. There is cloth there, flapping gently in the breeze, illuminated by the steadily growing glow of the divine magic pulsing through this place, as the night grows deeper.

>Head left, there appears to be a large number of chimnies and a single large undecorated building, something more utilitarian than anything. It looks a bit like the crafters hall back in your village, only on an entire order of magnitude larger.

You start to walk in that direction, as you do you get the distinct feeling of being watched. The last sunlight dies above you as it drops behind the tree line fully.

The world from then on is lit only by the disturbing purple light that wells up from the ground and drips out from the giant glowing gem that seems to be powering the lighting system. It's hard to believe this was the choice of colors for the Old Empire's inhabidents, you'd think they'd be creeped out by it, but there you go.

Heading to the large brick of a building the feeling of being watched only grows. As you approach, you hear something move behind you, but when you turn there's nothing there, but there's some distinct scratches in the ground, as if something lept forward and foot took a gash out of the solid stone below it.

You turn in a full circle, and see nothing... yet.

Reminder of Equipment:
-10 copper coins
-1 good bronze knife (still sharp, though not as it was this morning)
-1 glow-stone, as bright as a torch once activated, but will cause fatigue if used for too long.
-1 set of climbing gear
-1 set of leather armor, not worn currently, but won't take long to get into if you have some shelter.
-1 Hunter's tent
-1 length of fresh hemp rope.

>Do you make a run for the left side building?
>Do you try to make it back to the central plaza area instead?
>Do you walk calmly on your normal course?
>Do you take some other course of action?

You keep your normal pace, trying to keep calm as you keeping walking. The occasional noise from the obsidian trees with their glowing purple veins continues, but is rare. The nearest shelter that isn't of the woods is the large building, and so you keep walking. As you reach the edge of a large open space in front of it, you hear a loud chittering hiss, like some kind of insect, and turn to find a massive beetle like creature hurtling out of the woods at you like a bullet. It has only two legs, both of which are long and sharp clawed at the toes, it's wings appear to be for nothing except balance as it launches itself through the air at you like a chitenous frog, massive black chitin mandibles spread wide as it readies to chomp on you.

Your knife is in your belt within easy reach, a dark aclove that could be the entrance to the factory like building is a direct run in front of you if you think you can outrun the beast.

How do you deal with it?

You bolt for the alcove as the insectile beast swarms towards you. It speeds past, one of it's mandibles cutting hard into your shoulder, releasing the bandages on your left arm to reveal the spell-tattoo pattern that, in theory, should allow you to control an Avatar. You have no idea if having your shoulder cut open while the tattoos are still healing over will effect it though.

The beast lands and skids, leaving long gashes in the paving stones covering the ground as it circles back, hissing and snapping it's mandibles at you. A long whip like tongue darts out from between them to lick at the blood on the right side one even as it prepares to leap again for you!

You just have to bless your lucky stars that you aren't bleeding heavily despite the gash it left on your shoulder. The hunters always had horror stories to tell about what the smell of blood drew to you in the woods, especially if you bled hard enough to leave a trail...

You can try to get past the thing as it launches itself at you again, or try to fight the beast.

As the creature leaps at you, you rush foward, slamming yourself through the darkness of the aclove and into the building. Inside is a vast open space, dimly lit, but you can make out vague shapes.

Dozens upon dozens of humanoid shadows stand in the center, strange machines hang from the cieling, and the entire place has the look of some kind of assembly line. Nearby there is a stair case leading up into a series of scaffolds and strange boxes that are barely visible in the gloom.

You can make out a glow coming from a deep recess near the center of the room, and what looks like a ladder straight down as well.

To discern more, you would need to activate a light source, either one you carry on yourself, or one for the entire structure.

There appears to be no door to shut behind you, meaning the strange bug creature can easily follow you in if you don't lose it or kill it.

You can try hiding amongst the massive humanoid figures,

You manage to get amongst the figures. Up close you're able to tell that these are Avatars, all of them incomplete, but you can recognize the carvings on them when you're close. None of them have been decorated or given equipment, each and every one of them is in a severly damaged state. Their internal divine magics are never meant to be exposed to the element, and the centuries have taken their tole. That said, this portion of the ruin seems to be, on the surface, a mostly intact Avatar Foundry. Assuming the place can be made opperational, such places have been known to be the seeds of new cities, assuming that there's nothing else there that deters occupation of the ruins. It's odd though, you have to think to yourself. It was a common belief that the last intact Avatar Foundry had been found centuries ago, how could this one have been spared even the rumor of it's existence for so long?

-Avatar Pilot Quest Chapter 1 End-

I'll start this thread up again tomorrow around 6:00-7:00pm CST if it survives. Or I'll start a new one.

I'm new at this, so I hope that I've not bored you all terribly much. Thank you, and good night. I'll forgo archiving this for the time being, if I manage to make it to my third thread, then I'll start archiving it then, until then I'll just settle for Foolz
