Civ thread, here we go. First to race/terrain to three votes wins. I'll be QMing for maybe 5-6 hours before I retire and someone else can take the reins or the thread turns into spiderman.

Trying a more organized approach this time.
All rolls are 1d100 unless specified, rolls are only counted if they're asked for.
I request that players use names for clarity when counting votes, etc.
>Please greentext votes.
Rolls will have a semi-arbitrary target that players must roll over to succeed, only one player needs to roll over a target for the civ to succeed. The more players that roll = the more 'effort' your civ is putting in.
Majority rules, except as below.
A rolled 1 makes the turn's result a critfail regardless of other rolls except...
A rolled 100 makes the turn's result a crit success and supersedes a critfail.

Fair enough, for the sake of expedience!

Your tribe has wandered westward for many a moon in search of the Golden Lands, a fabled promise, a hushed whisper passed from mother to son for generations. Here at last, you have found it. A great plain stretches before your eyes, cast in gold by the setting sun. Here your people will graze, hunt and run wild to their hearts' content. You know little else about this new land, but as tribal chief you are responsible for ensuring the tribe's well-being.

Choose a perk!
>Terrain bonus (woods)
>Attunement (nature)
>Extra totem (choose an animal)

Choose and name a leader, describe what he/she looks like, and what he/she's best at. Hunter? Shaman? etc.

We are without name. Name our tribe.
50 Centaurs (25M25F)
1 Leader, 16 Hunters, 33 Untasked
Food: 2 more turns collected food, herd of 10 horses.
Infrastructure: Hide tents that can be used as temporary housing.
Equipment: 17 Bows
Tech: Animal husbandry.

Actions:
>A. Develop infrastructure (describe a building/project)
>B. Gather (food, resources, etc)
>C. Explore the area (direction or specific landmark)
>D. Research/Study (tech advance, magic, artifact, etc)
>E. Other (suggest an action, may be used to assign centaurs to an ongoing task)
>>
>>30487770
>Extra Totem
As far as animals, what kinds are we limited to? Could we go Totem (Dragon) or something like that? Or are we limited to traditional creatures, like a rhino or elephant, or something?

Actions
>Explore West into the plains
>>
>>30487770

>Extra totem: Great Eagle
>Leader: Pouring Rain - Shaman
>Explore north
>>
>>30487770
>Attunement
C. Explore the general area just to get a feel for our surroundings.
>>
>>30487770
>Extra totem(girdled armadillo lizard)

Haven't seen a female leader in a while
>Svetna
>Shaman, wears a poncho and wields a staff. Communes with animals for guidance and cooperation. Has fought bears and lions in duels and won.

Action:
>E. Build enclosure(walls, mark territory)
>>
>>30487863
Mm, probably be a bit overpowering to have a dragon totem. Let's keep it traditional, something someone might have as their spirit animal or whatever.
>>

>>
>>30487770

Bonus:
>Extra totem (Eagle)

Action:

>>

D: Study the arts of the Bow, for it would be useless to not have any ranged weaponry.

The Totem must be of the horse, it would only make sense!

So can we come to some sort of consensus with the Leader? While I do like the idea of a female leader, I also really want this guy to be our leader >>30487702 And Svetna sounds a little too peaceful.
So maybe female, Svetna,
be middle aged

Your leader is Svetna, a middle-aged centauress who sees nature as merciless and unforgiving, and while she cares for her people, she believes firmly in survival of the fittest. She is a hazel-eyed, stern-faced woman who has vigilantly led her people to the golden fields ever since she was appointed chief. As chief, she is the spiritual, moral, and military leader. Her connection with wildlife is legendary. Her hide is painted with tribal tattoos and she wears a necklace made from semi precious stones and the bones from the previous chief.
(Shaman Leader, wields a bone glaive)

Eager to claim this land, so bountiful and rich in wildlife, for her tribe, Svetna orders all able tribesmen and women to the forest to fell a great tree. It's hauled back to the plains, and under the shaman's scrutiny is carved into a beautiful totem pole featuring the species of wildlife found on the plains... from the horses and armadillo lizards brought by the Aymara, to the wildebeest, wolves, tigers, cassowaries, eagles and elephants that roam this land. The tribe is ecstatic that they've finally found a home, and a night of celebration results in 4 new centaurs.

Your hunters are sent out again; this time they're successful in bringing down an elephant, along with a few smaller game animals. Great care is taken to use every part of the massive beast, the bone being made into arrowheads and decoration, the ivory being ground into medicine, the meat dried into jerky and the leather tanned. Svetna has a dream, in which she sees a beautiful white-feathered goose laying eggs of purest gold. Suddenly, two bizarre creatures appear -- they look almost like centaur, only where there should be four legs... there are two. They hack open the goose with knives and pull it apart, then fall into each other sobbing when they find nothing within. The shaman awakens in a cold sweat, and inexplicably feels that hunting down the creatures of the plain will eventually leave it barren and dry.

She orders a new caste of tribesmen and women to become shepards of the land, not only caring for their horses and armadillo lizards but also doing what they can to tame and nurture the wildebeest.

Her people comfortable for the moment and with little to complain of, Svetna retires to her tent and mixes up a potent brew. The aroma is staggering to most, but the shaman manages to finish the mixture before drinking it and settling in to meditate. In no time at all, she falls dead to the floor and her spirit flies from her body, wind travelling through her as she flies through it. The living appear as ghosts to her here, visible only in her periphery as whispering, faceless phantoms, but the true spirits are all too clear, gliding effortlessly in this realm of shadow. She calls out to the Terrible Lizard, the father of the armadillo lizards that her tribe keeps as pets today, and asks for a piece of his protective power, before the strain of being separated from her body becomes too much and she's forced back into the world of the living.

The herdsmen of the Aymara grow frustrated with how unruly the wildebeest can be, and how their fairer cousins the horses are so predisposed to wander off when not being watched. They present an idea to the rest of the tribe, and it catches on quickly. Even the hunters, who are normally opposed to laying down roots, are happy to help with the construction of the new ranches. After some delays in construction, the ranch is complete and the herdsmen have corrals for their herds and are spending more time breeding and caring for their stock and less time chasing them back down.

>Food is now self-sustaining! Population will grow slowly to new cap of 70 before more food/developments are required.

White smoke is spotted to the west by a centaur child playing in the fields one day.

The tribe's sole Khan, a veteran of the old Horde's wars, has been working on a little project of his for some time now. He's never been much of a craftsman or inventor, but he knows how his weapon should feel, how it should snap, how it should spring. How the careful application of a pulley system can make even a scrawny hunter a deadly warrior. Finally, after discarding several failed attempts, he's recreated the old compound bows of the Horde to exact specifications. Nothing will take the Golden Lands from the Aymara, he promises to the tribe with every bow he delivers to the hunters.

>+Equipment: Compound bows (+5 to ranged attack rolls)

Khan Mathrian leads a small cadre of hunters out to investigate the white smoke at the Shaman's urging. After a hard day's gallop, they find themselves approaching a camp: 2 pitched tents and a campfire with two strange, pink-skinned creatures in even stranger garb peering at them curiously. These two-legged centaur rise from their seats and one fiddles with a strange lens in front of his eye before saying, "Ehm, well, how do you do there, old chap?"

Svetna continues to work in her tent, the old hides and furs permeated with the noxious scent of concoctions, brews and fumes. The Shaman gets pretty high before she realizes she's been chewing on her tongue, then rolls over and waggles her fingers, mumbling whatever gibberish her addled brain blurts out. A gout of flame bursts from her hands and sets her tent ablaze, and she's dragged out of the tent by her frantic tribesmen, who quickly stomp the fire out.

>+Spell: Elemental Fire

Khan Mathrian steps forward, assuming the role of speaker, and greets the strange half-centaurs. "Greetings, two-legs. I am Khan Mathrian of the Aymara, hunters without parallel and masters of the plains. Who are you? What tribe do you hail from? What is your creed?"

"Oh my, Benedict," says the one excitedly to the other, "they speak! Of tribes! How quaint, how exciting!" The other claps his companion's shoulder, "Well don't be rude, Withers, introduce yourself!"

"Ah yes," says the one called Withers, "I am Thomas Bertram Withers, and my associate here and I are explorers hailing from... er, well the tribe of Alberon. We've come out here to map out the lands and establish relations with any peoples in the area, but my word, we never expected to actually meet intelligent... er, what might a chap call you?"

The conversation is bizarre to both parties, but you make out that the explorers wish to meet your people and bring word of them back to their home kingdom, that they might establish friendly relations with the Aymara.

Khan Mathrian asks the explorers if they would share their maps as a gesture of goodwill, and the humans, as they call themselves, happily agree to do so before parting your company. The going back to the tribal lands is slow, and some of the hunters make derisive comments under their breath about the humans' inability to gallop, but none will bear the humans on their backs. They will return to the tribe in one turn, to feast and discuss trade and the Aymara culture.

Meanwhile, Svetna the shaman feels the strain of middle-age beginning to hit her, and realises it's time to begin passing her skills on to the younger generations before her ways die out. She takes up three shaman apprentices and begins teaching them the fundamentals of shamanism, explaining that the spirit world actually coexists with the material plane, and that the unseen interaction between the two is the basis of all magic...

>3 shaman apprentices being trained, will be capable of magic in three turns.
>2 human explorers arriving in one turn. Perhaps some preparations are in order?

>Extra totem allows you to create that kind of hybrid; incredible likely to be sterile.

So if you have a Rhino totem, you can make rhino centaurs, centaurs with the bodyish of a Rhino instead of a horse.
Therefore a Armadillo Lizard totem would allow us to create something akin to >>30488970
Thats the entire point of the extra totem, to grant to possibility of a second form. At least thats how i've always seen it played.

A single hunter has ridden hard for home ahead of the group, and informs the Chief of their guests to be. A sense of foreboding overcomes her as she listens to the hunter describe the creatures from her dream, but she masks her emotions and gives the order to have the tribe make preparations. The next few days are spent decorating the tents, carving numerous smaller totem poles, and cooking up a grand feast of wildebeest steaks and lizard legs, spiced with mixes concocted from the forest by the shaman herself. When the explorers arrive, they bombard the shaman with questions, learning much of the Aymara and the centaur race in general. They spend much of their time immersed in books, using some kind of charcoal sticks to meticulously draw the centaur and their grand totem pole.

We are the Aymara. We are entertaining guests from a foreign land.

You learn that the humans of Alberon are from far across the plains, having crossed a mountain range and a desert to make their way here. They learn that you are settlers from a proud centaur Horde, a conglomerate of clans ten thousand centaurs strong, constantly roaming and making war on any foolish enough to stand in their way. You learn that their kingdom is a scholarly and mercantile one, focused on bettering its people through technology and diplomacy. They learn of your shamanistic practices and your coexistence with the beasts of the great plains. They are both amused and impressed by the craftsmanship of your totems, and for ivory and elephant leather, they're willing to trade salt, bread, and iron tools, explaining the basics of farming crops.

You are correct, however I personally have never been a fan of the whole /half-human half-not horse centaur idea because at that point they aren't really centaurs anymore. I Really I think its one of those things (like everything else in a civ thread) where it's the GMs discretion

I always preferred the spiritual totem, where centaurs gained bonuses from their spirit animals over literal hybrids running around. Just makes more sense lore-wise and it makes it so we dont have to do things like having giant feral lizards fuck horse people (this isn't /d/!)
