I know it sounds crazy, but...WHAT IF40K was a wuxia setting?
40k doesn't have to be everything, guys. A wuxia space opera is a neat idea. Why weigh it down with 40k's baggage?
>>30522182Honestly, just for the sheer ridiculousness of it.But yeah, I'm down for "just" a normal Space Wuxia.
>>30522198So, how does it work?In the endless void of 41st millennium there's only KUNG FU FIGHTING?A god/man known only as the Emperor rules human space. Few have seen him, only a handful spoke to him. Some say he's a decrepit old man, some claim he's eternally young, some laugh and posit there's only an empty throne and what remains of him lies in a coffin. In far reaches of space on hostile planets there are monasteries training finest warriors known to mankind. They're hardly men anymore, so enlightened and advanced in their kung fu they are. Few are good enough to live through the educational process, so there's at most a thousand in each temple. But even a dozen of *** (I'm not good at names) is an awesome sight.
>>30522333That still sounds exactly like 40k already is so I think it could work easily. Just replace the gothic ascetic with a ming dynasty one and bang your done.
>>30522384>That still sounds exactly like 40k alreadyWell, yeah
>>30522384What this guy said, this kind of project with just changing the style of 40k gets it's interesting parts from changing the details. Such as changing the themes of some first founding chapters so you get Space Tigers, Space Dragons and Space Monkeys whose Primarch is totally not the Monkey King.If we start changing major things about the setting we might as well just build it up from the bottom.
That guy on the far left has a silly hat.
>>30522169Absolutely nothing changes.
>>30522603Surely there'd be less bulky armor and no Thundershields. Also, I dread to imagine Orks
>>30522631No. Nothing changes because Tau are now the official POV.
>>30522672Ah, yes. More "Tau are Chinese" bullshit.
>>30522631Wuxia Orks would be great, warriors guided solely by their desire to prove that they are the strongest.
>>30522697Tau are Japanese. I don't know why you think it's bullshit, since they were designed specifically for the anime crowd.
>>30522739Are they hot-blooded with spring in their stomach-hearts?
>>30522750>Tau are JapaneseYeees. Because Japanese are a caste society ruled by (essentially) Priests of Ideology, have no spiritual culture to speak of and are not a culture obsessed with melee combat.
>>30522169The Eternal Emperor of Humanity, after a hundred years conquest, United the world in One Rule Under Heaven. He then set forth amongst the stars, to bring celestial order to the unruly heavens, which had fallen into chaos due to the manipulations of wicked sorcerers, serving the Four Great Fiends -Hundun, Spirit of Chaos (Khorne)Taotie, Spirit of Gluttony (Slaanesh)Taowu, Spirit of Ignorance and Apathy (Nurgle)and Quionqi, spirit of Deviousness (Tzeentch)These fiends had severed man from the the celestial order, and all languished in wickedness and chaos. Therefore, using ancient alchemy, the Emperor breathed life into great warriors, in principle to the Great Constant VirtuesRen - Humaness (Sanguinius)Yi - Righteousness/Justice (Lion)Li - Propriety/Etiquette (Roboute)Zhi - Knowledge (Magnus)Xin - Integrity (Corax)Zhong - Loyalty (Horus)Xiao - Filail Piety (Vulkan)Jie - Continency (Dorn)Yi - Righteousness (Leman Russ)Cheng - Honesty (Ferrus Manus)Shu - Forgiveness (Lost)Lian - Cleanness (Mortarion)Chi - Shame, Judgement (Curze)Yong - Bravery (Angron)Wen - Kind and Gentle (Lost)Liang - Good-Hearted (Jhangtai Khan)Gong - Reverence (Lorgar)Jian - Frugality (Pertuabo)Riang - Modesty (Fulgrim)shuāng zǐ zuò - The Twin Constellation (Alpharius Omegon) was created later from the spirits of the West and South to replace the lost spirits of Kindness and Forgiveness, who are missing to this day
>>30522792Thank you for agreeing with me.
>>30522833That's really cool
>>30522833Sensing this threat to their power, the Four Great fiends meddled in all ways with the Emperors work, spiriting his children away from their cribs and attempting to corrupt each of them in turn. They were initially unsuccessful and the Virtuous Sons of the Imperial Blood would wage war throughout the heavens at the behest of their Father, who sought to bring order and enlightenment to the universe. However, the lost brothers of Wen and Shu were never found, and their absence weighed heavily on the souls of the Emperor and his children. Eventually he would create the Twins of West and South to attempt to replace this void, but without the virtues of Kindness and Forgiveness corruption began to fester at the heart of the Imperial Court. The seeds of corruptions eventually took root in the heart of the Emperor's children themselves, and the Four Fiends turned many of his greatest champions against him.Zhi's quest for knowledge became an obsession with guile and cleverness, Lian's cleanness became slovenlyness and sloth, Curze's judgement became an obsession with punishment, Angrons bravery was twisted into murderous rage, Lorgars reverence became obsession and fanatacism, Pertuabo's frugality was twisted to bitterness, Riang's modesty was corrupted to pride, and worse of all, Zhong's loyalty became rebellion. The era of Civil War which would follow would come to be called the Warring Virtues Period, and seemed to all to herald the end of the great Imperial dynasty.
>>30522910In the end, the Emperor would triumph over the rebellion and banish his corrupted sons to the realm of the 134 Hells to dwell with the Fiends they now served. But without the Spirit of Forgiveness, he could not accept the failure that had happened, nor without the spirit of Kindness could he embrace his remaining children anew. Gravely wounded and sick at heart, he ensconced himself in the Forbidden City of the Jade Throne to meditate, where he remains to this day, unattended except by his closest courtiers, in an eternal state of life and death as he casts his consciousness across the void of space, lighting the path for his children both literally and metaphorically in his eternal search for his lost children Shu and Wen.
>>30522940With the Emperor in retreat and the Empire in shambles, the remaining brothers attempted to rebuild, even as their corrupt and banished kin continually attempted to escape the 134 hells of Diyu to wreak havoc once more. Brother Li established great military and social reforms to prevent future revolutions, including a massive, Empire spanning beaurocracy that survives to this day. Rather than being spread amongst the Sons, who could not agree on a ruler among themselves, the Empire would be ruled by a Council of Royal Eunuchs who would carry out the Emperor's implied will. Each of the Principle Virtues would not lead an army, but instead their own elite bands of soldiers inducted into the ways of mysticism of their rites. The burden of rule would be spread over humanity as a whole until the Emperor found Kindness and Forgiveness and returned to them, as the Eighteen Virtues had failed when whole, and so half of them alone could not expect to carry the burden. A special bureaucracy of investigators, the Wenziyu, would be established to seek out, expose, and punish thought crime and betrayal amongst the populace. These feared secret police would become a power in their own right, earning their leader a seat among the Council of Eunuchs, for such was their power over life and death.

The Japanese historically, actually loved the shit out of guns, and Samurai were traditionally mounted archers. They're best described as an unholy blend of influences, but most strongly Post-Industrial/Imperial Japan.>>30522631Chinese actually had quite heavy armors and shields, unique among Asian cultures>>30523077Sirrah is a diminutive
>>30523118You're doing great, yeah.
>>30523028You are amazing,But what of Eldar? Of Necrons? Of Orks?
>>30523118OK, now you're just showing off....But yes, you should definitely continue.
>>30523118What would the names of the wuxia Space Marines be called?
>>30523028>>30523118With the Empire re-stabilized in the wake of the Warring Virtues Era, many of the Sons of the Emperor went their separate ways, either dying in battle with their fallen bretheren or vanishing on a quest to find Forgiveness and Kindness. They left behind them their most devoted disciples, who passed down their styles of fighting among the chosen of the Great Monastery Schools the Nine remaining virtues were organized in under Brother Li's law. They Are:Fu Jow Pai - School of the Black Lion, Yi: Modeled after the demeanor and fighting strategy of an attacking tiger. The striking movements are lightning fast, agile and powerful. Techniques unique to Fu-Jow Pai are ripping, tearing, clawing and grasping applications.T'ai chi ch'uan - Supreme Ultimate fist, the School of Brother Li: Brother Li emphasized dogmatic adherence to practice and practical flexibility in all things. His (self named) Supreme Ultimate Fist is actually a fusion of five different intricate styles his followers are expected to attempt to master. It is said none ever achieved full mastery of all five styles except for him.Zui Quan - Drunken Fist, the School of Brother Yi (the other one, Russ): Famous for his rivalry with his similarly named brother, the rambunctious Brother Yi (often called Drunken Yi) mastered a style in adherance to his roaring love of rice wine. This style mimics the unpredictable antics of drunken stumbling to put opponents off guard, before attacking them with ferocious close range blows.Bājíquán - Open-gate eight-extremities fist, School of Brother Ren: Belying his more kind nature than his brothers, Brother Ren's method of fighting was up-close and ferocious, focusing on short range blows and elbow strikes to overwhelm opponents.Yīng zhǎo pài - Eagle Claw, School of Brother Xin. Clever brother Xin favored a school of gripping techniques, system of joint locks, takedowns, and pressure point strikes.
>>30523355lóng xíng mó qiáo - Dragon Fist, School of Brother Xiao. Lung Ying (Dragon form) focuses mainly on powerful, short range attack. The style was created as an aggressive combat art and operates under the basic assumption that you are trying to either disable your opponent to the point that they are no longer a threat in battle, or kill them.Choy Li Fut - School of Brother Jie. Choy Li Fut is an effective self-defense system, particularly noted for defense against multiple attackers It contains a wide variety of techniques, including long and short range punches, kicks, sweeps and take downs, pressure point attacks, joint locks, and grappling.Chángquán - Long fist, School of Brother Liang: The forms of the Long Fist style emphasize fully extended kicks and striking techniques, and by appearance would be considered a long-range fighting system. In some Long Fist styles the motto is that "the best defense is a strong offense," in which case the practitioner launches a preemptive attack so aggressive that the opponent doesn't have the opportunity to attack. Others emphasize defense over offense, noting that nearly all techniques in Long Fist forms are counters to attacks. Long Fist uses large, extended, circular movements to improve overall body mobility in the muscles, tendons, and joints. Advanced Long Fist techniques include qin na joint-locking techniques and shuai jiao throws and takedowns. The Long Fist style is considered to contain a good balance of hand and foot techniques.Xing Yi Quan - Shape-Will Fist, The School of Brother Cheng: Xing Yi is characterized by aggressive, seemingly linear movements and explosive power that's most often applied from a short range. A practitioner of Xing Yi uses coordinated movements to generate bursts of power intended to overwhelm the opponent, simultaneously attacking and defending.
Somebody is capping these, right ?
>>30523494I have to go for a bit so i'll skip the Chaos schools and address other questionsOrks:The ravening hordes of the foreign barbarians are endless. These highly mobile, brutal enemies once ruled and extorted over the far reaches of Humanities outposts. Orks in this setting are effectively Mongolian, Bosses are Khans, and there is a greater emphasis on GOTTA GO FAST. I think a good mixture of cultures that retains Orks orkyness while adding some Steppe Barbarian in there can be found.
>>30523575You are the based one, anon. But I would like to see what the Eldar/Deldar are.
>>30523575Tau: Japanese/Korean Foreigners. With a bit of research into Korean culture we can thro a twist on the TauEldar: 'Western' Foreigners ie Gwailo ie White People. A great foreign power, not necessarily in decline, shiftless and without honor or spiritual merit.Necrons: I'm honestly stumped on this one. Near-East/Middle Eastern cultures like the Persians? I'm not sure what sort of influence they had on the Chinese. Deathless Persian Robots could be cool right? Imagine a tomb lord with a huge square beard.
>>30523628TL,DR: The Eldar are British, The Tau are still Weaboo, the Necrons are sandmonkeys instead of Egyptians. And the Tyranids are... fuck, I don't know, evil spirits?
>>30523640In closing for now have some ChingChongs
>>30522182That's like going to /vp/ and saying "Not everything has to be Pokemon, guys."
>>30523640Why can't Necrons still be Egyptians. It would help with the "our civilization died before yours even began" deal.
>>30523856I'm pretty sure Egyptians didn't have kung fu
>>30523880Neither do Westerners, or techically Koreans. Gongfu is the rightful inheritance of mankind, even if some of them have turned to Chaos.
>>30523901So, Imperial Guard would practice that shitty (but supposedly effective) boxing-style kung fu they teach in Shanghai.
>>30523856>>30523880Make them ancient Greek Pankration practitioners.

>>30523640Hey faggots i'm back>>30525964Not Op, I just looked this shit up and it seemed to fit>>30524403Gwailo pls>>30524001Funny enough, European (german, italian, and british) was what I was imagining the eldar as. Venetian Dark Eldar would be perfectly fitting. And rapier/sword wielding was exactly what I was thinking of.In regards to the Ancient Culture issue, keep in mind shifting the genre to Wuxia and the focus to a chinese culture changes A LOT. The concept of "lost empire" is a uniquely western, and very specifically, british one. Furthermore, the decoupling of the Eldar from the origins of Slaanesh has massive implications.Namely, the Eldar are not an ancient, dying race anymore. Well, they can be and are ancient, but they aren't dying. The Fall never happened. They're still very much a vibrant, powerful people, if extremely decadent and materialistic (like all Gwailo). They sell commodities like booze and drugs to humans that scarcely have an affect on them but that put Humanity into year long coma's (think Opium). One of the reasons (aside from being Alien Gwailo) the Imperium hates the Eldar. The Eldar are basically space traders/jews, they're very mercantily aligned. They want to reclaim the INVESTMENTS they lost to the Imperium. As a result of this, the Imperium isn't quite as large as it would be in Baseline 40k, because there was an actual power that could stand up to it during the Pacification Era (Great Crusade)
>>30528691The Eldar are far less of a homogenous people. Their Craftworlds, called Enclaves, are more akin to nations unto themselves, though they are all united by a common sense of Eldar superiority and culture. The fall never happened. Eldar and Dark Eldar never split. You're as likely to meet a seer waifu as you are a homunculous murder-freak. Dark Eldar are instead represented by certain Craft Worlds (or even regular worlds, since the Eye of Terror never blew up the way it did)
>>30528755The Orks are still Orks, barbarian people either elevated or created to fight the Necron Empire in the past. Sharing traits with Mongolians, Cossacks, and other steppe's people, they favor high speed mounted combat and brutal face to face warfare. The Khanate is fracticious and often wars with itself, but will usually unite against an outside threat (or for the promise of a good war and plunder)
>>30528799The Tau Confederation is a legitimate power, being a conglomeration of many smaller alien races elevated and armed by Eldar Enclaves to serve as a proxy war against the Imperium. They are a ficticious melding of Korean, Japanese, and other Asiatic nations united against the Imperium to maintain their independence. The Tau represent the Japanese, the Kroot the Nanman, the Tarellians Taiwan, the Nicassar the Philippines, the Vespids Nepal and Burmese cultures
>>30528799Did the Khanate once rule over much of the Empire, a la Kublai Khan?Actually, Ork Kublai Khan and Eldar Marco Polo hanging around in the Empire's capital sounds hilarious.
>>30528960Why do you think the Imperium hates Xenos so much? (ironically also in line with 40k Canon, as it's said many human colonies fell under alien rule)>>30528910The Necrons are a melange of Near Eastern Empire influences, from Babylon to Egypt. Once fierce enemies of the Eldar, they were driven into hiding ages ago, but are now re-emerging as a newly ascendent power ruled by Deathless God Kings. This also opens a door for semitic Necrons, so keep an eye out for Phaeron Moses
>>30529037Finally the Tyranids, are ancient precambrian beasts long lay dormant in the center of the world, now awakening for some reason. Dinosaurs, Graboids, other Jurassic horrors - the Tyranids are literally pestilent dinosaurs unleashed onto the world once again after being driven into ages of dormancy.
>>30529074>kung fu battles against dinosaurs, mummies, and ancient barbariansThis is some Doctor McNinja shit right there.
>>30529166>>30529156Honestly it could probably stand to be it's own setting at this point

>>30528691So... we're doing this, then. A very novel way to show the Imperium being besieged on all sides, I must say.
Bumping for Chaos styles.
>>30534540Oh, Sure. The Cursed Schools of the Fallen VirtuesBak Mei - White Eyebrows, School of the Fallen Zhong. Bak Mei's fighting style makes use of the four principles of "floating" (fou), "sinking" (chum), "swallowing" (tun) and "spitting" (tou). It is characterized by its emphasis on powerful close range hand strikes, specifically with the extended knuckle attack known as the "phoenix-eye fist". Bak Mei strikes are usually executed in conjunction with intercepting and jamming the opponent's strike. Unique to Bak Mei is its classification of the following 6 neijin (powers): biu (thrusting), chum (sinking), tan (springing), fa (neutralizing), tung, and chuk. Bak Mei emphasizes the movements of the tiger and its strikes are executed with explosive power via Fa jin. Additionally, it contains numerous kum la (joint manipulation) techniques as well as ground-fighting methods in the Dei Saat Kun form.
>>30535191Lama Pai - Lions Roar, School of the Fallen Riang. created a system that mimicked the deft evasion and vital point striking of the white crane and the ape's powerful swings and grabbing techniques. It was based upon the number eight, an important number in Chinese cosmology and numerology. The fundamental fighting theory was known as the "eight character true essence". The "eight character true essence" can be roughly translated as "strike the place that has a pulse, never a place that has no pulse, and stretch the arms out while keeping the body away."The system consisted of 8 fist strikes, 8 palm strikes, 8 elbow strikes, 8 finger strikes, 8 kicking techniques, 8 seizing (clawing) techniques, 8 stances and 8 stepping patterns. The Eight Character True Essence: “Strike the place that has a pulse, never a place that has no pulse, and stretch the arms out while keeping the body away".Chan (ruthlessness): Chan represents the mental state that must be achieved. When attacked, there is no room for ambivalence or hesitation. The student must commit themselves to being totally ruthless. All strikes must be executed full force, and all blocking motions must destroy the opponent's limbs.Sim (dodge, evade, avoid): Sim represents the preferred defensive method. It is considered superior to evade all attacks whilst simultaneously striking exposed vital points. This is achieved through footwork, body positioning, and jumping.Chyuhn (to pierce, penetrate): Chyuhn represents the primary offensive goal, for all strikes to pierce and destroy vital points. It also refers to vital point striking.Jit (to stop, intercept): Jit represents the second line of defense. Attacks that cannot be evaded must be intercepted and the attacking limb destroyed.
Shuai jiao - "to throw onto the ground through wrestling with legs", Style of the Fallen Lian. A wrestling style that makes use of legs to kick and off-balance, and the use of forearms in blocking, striking, and joint locks.Shequan - Snake Style, School of the Fallen Chi. Snake style is based on whipping or rattling power which travels up the spine to the fingers, or in the case of the rattler, the body shake which travels down the spine to the tip of the tailbone. The ability to sinuously move, essentially by compressing one's stomach/abdominal muscles, is very important. Footing is quite grounded. The stancework is fluid in order to maximize the whipping potential of any movement. This necessitates building a strong spine to contain the power and strong fingers to convey the strike. Since breath is important to any movement of the spine and ribs, snake style is considered one of the main styles which eventually led to internal training.
>>30535289lúohànquan - Arhat Boxing, Style of the Fallen Gong. Arhat Boxing or Luohan Quan has in total 108 different movements; from six different forms of fist movements, two forms of palm movements, four forms of locking and grappling. Each movement in the art of Arhat Boxing is simple and straight. Each movement represents the simplicity and beauty of the expressions of the Arhat Statues. Each powerful attack is hidden through the movements of Arhat forms.Huaquan - Long Fist, Style of the Fallen Yong. Hua Quan is characterized by its smooth, well-connected movements. Its techniques are executed "like a fast burst of wind" and its flawless stances are "as rooted as the pine tree" (excerpt from the "12 patterns" of Hua Quan training.) Hua Quan practitioners breath deeply to spread air flows throughout the body, and the Hua Quan practitioner develops external/internal strength and energy for fighting, in particular cun jing (inch energy). The Hua Quan 24 Essentials rests on the principles of four hits (each category being quite extensive), 8 methods and 12 patterns. Eleven basic aspects of practice include use of shoulder, back, hip, knee, leg, foot, arm, elbow, fist, palm and claw.
>>30535427Chuojiao - Poking Foot, Style of the Fallen Zhi. comprises many jumps, kicks, and fast fist sequences. The fist and feet work in unison and strike continuously forward, like “falling meteorites”, never giving the opponent a moment to recover. The qinggong portion of this style's training involves a practitioner jumping against a wall with heavy weights affixed to his/her calves. t features powerful but comfortable moves and its blows are accurate and incorporate a variety of subtle feet tricks. Hands and feet cooperate well for better advantage and longer reach. Its strikes are short but fatal. Hardness is the core of Chuojiao which it combines with suppleness. Its routine consists of nine inter-connected twin feet routines. These routines can be practised either one by one, or linked together. The feet plays call for close cooperation between the feet which is why it is called twin feet play. Another feet poking Chuan is called nine-tumble 18-fall Chuan.

What about the mechanicus? Imperial alchemists?Or psykers/the immaterium? "The Great Life Force?"
>>30535446Wuzuquan - Five Ancestors, Style of the fallen Twins of West and South. consists of techniques from five styles:the breathing methods and iron body of Da mo (達尊拳)[the posture and dynamic power of Luohan (羅漢拳)the precision and efficient movement of Te Emperor (太祖拳)the hand techniques and the complementary softness and hardness of Fujian White Crane (白鶴拳)the agility and footwork of Monkey (猴拳)Fujian White Crane - Style of the Fallen Jian. The characteristics of this style are deep rooted stances, intricate hand techniques and fighting mostly at close range as if to imitate a pecking bird. The flying crane style however has a greater amount of long range techniques although it too does prefer close quarters hand oriented combat, which simulates the flapping of the wings.>>30535492>>tfw Horus is Pai MeiIt seemed too on the nose to pass
