You walk past the dirty streets of the working district. By this time, every body willing to work is working, and all that's left to fill the streets are those who have business doing so, or those who have no business at all. The young blond man leads you silently up the streets, until you reach the nicer part of town. You feel a bit out of place here, dressed in ragged work clothes and walking amongst men in suits, and women in afternoon dresses. You get a few odd stares, but nobody bothers to notice you for more than a few seconds.

Eventually you are brought to some sort of restaurant. A bistro according to the sign. You are about to walk in, before the young man motions you over to an alley to the side of the building, and you enter. You walk around to the rear, and come to an iron door. The young man knocks a few times, and mumbles something, and the door swings open. He steps in, and beckons you to follow.

"It's just a place that we like to hold meetings. It keeps our business away from prying eyes."

You try to get a better explanation, but he's not very forthcoming with info. He walks through the door way, and you're left to follow. The hallway within is cramped and dark, and filled with the smell of meat and cheese. It comes to a large slope, and eventually ends in a large, smokey room that you presume must be underground based on the lack of any sort of natural light. There are large, round tables set up around the room, most empty, but some filled with well dressed parties murmuring about what you assume are business operations.

You are lead to one such table, where an elderly man with a large pot belly sits next to a rough looking fellow who refuses to take his eyes off of you. The elderly man smiles, showing off a gold tooth, and politely invites you to sit.

You pull out a chair and sit. The elderly man smiles, and his companion seems to relax a bit. The young man who brought you here sits next to you, backwards in the chair, still smiling cheekily. The elderly man asks if you've eaten, and before you can answer, orders you a plate from one of the passing waiters.

"It's good to meet you sir. My boy here tells me that you've served. Always an honor to meet one of our troops. I also hear that you don't have much rust since the fighting days. That's impressive, given the times."

His smiles wanes a bit, but he holds his composure. The thug beside him looks somewhat nervous.

"I see you aren't the kind of man to waste time with formalities. I can respect that, certainly. I did bring you here for a reason. You see, these days it's hard to find reliable men who know how to get a job done, and get it done right. I don't know if many of my own employees would have gone as above and beyond as you did last night. And, I personally believe that men like you, hard workers, deserve a larger cut of the pie than most folk. That's why I want to make a proposition. You work for me, just for a while, and I make sure you never have to worry about a meal again."

You ask him what exactly he means.

"There's a shipment that has found itself in my hands, and I mean to send it off to a close friend of mine across the Red Sea. I know you were a pilot in your day, and I know you flew several stealth missions. All you have to do for me, is what you did for the government ten years ago. Take the ship over, let my men worry about the drop off, and then come back. do that for me, and you'll have your weight in silver. Now I know what you're thinking. What's the catch, right? Well there is none. I just need a pilot. And maybe, if this goes well, you consider taking on a few more jobs. Of course you aren't required to. Tell me, how does that sound?"

You take up a fork and dig into the dough balls. The first bite is piping hot, and you're forced to spit it back onto the fork, a display that gets a few chuckles out of the table. After a quick few puffs to cool it off, you try again. It's quite delicious. You eat a few more bites, and suddenly feel wobbly. You set the fork down and shake your head to wake yourself up, but it's no use.

You awake in a spring bed. You stand up, and nearly fall as the floor sways below you. The room comes into focus. Wood walls, iron bracing, iron door. A wood chest, and a desk with a large chair, and every bit of it nailed down tight. A cabin if you've ever seen one. You must be aboard a ship. You wipe your forehead and think. The last thing you recall is the meal, and then you awoke here. It doesn't take a genius to put it together.

You begin examining your surroundings more thoroughly. The room appears to be fairly barren. When you open the wood chest however, you find a few disconcerting items. There is a padded coat, made of thick owlbear hide, tough enough to take a blow from a saber. There is also a military saber inside, and a familiar looking rifle. When you take a closer look, you realize the rifle is the very one you've been keeping under your mattress all these years. You swing down the lever and sure enough there are two shells inside. The chest also contains a box of twenty spares.

She is fairly tall, considering you don't have to look down to meet her eyes, and is dressed in a similar leather coat to yours. Her hair is auburn and she wears it in a braid falling over her shoulder. She has a saber on her belt, as well as a rifle on her back. You find it difficult to contain your shock at seeing her so suddenly. She eyeballs you, going up and down, making you feel slightly self conscious, and then steps back.

She laughs at your jape. A rough laugh, unbefitting of a lady. The laugh of a sailor, made gritty by the rough skies of battle. You think the saber and rifle aren't just for show. When she finishes you ask her her name and business.

"Beladonna, but you can call me Donna if it's too long. I'm your first mate for this voyage. The boss asked me to get you used to the way we work, and to make sure you come back for more work. Honestly, you look half airsick as it is, so I'm not to interested in seeing more of you. Anyway, if you've got questions see me. Don't bother the men with little things, they tend to be on edge during jobs. Oh, and don't bother with sneaking. Everyone saw them drag you aboard like a napping babe, so there's no point trying to look tough."

You walk around her, and make your way up a set of iron steps to the upper deck of the ship. You emerge into the warm afternoon sun, and see a good number of grimy and gritty men moving about. They all wear the same coat as you. As you walk the deck, you notice how disciplined they seem to be. Some of them might even have been soldiers. The ship itself is a normal cargo shuttle at first glance, but when you inspect it you find that your employer has outfitted it with several larger than needed guns. It's unnerving, yet somehow relieving at the same time. You take special note of the forward guns, which are almost the size of a true warship's.

After a good inspection, you conclude that this ship is indeed a force to be reckoned with.

You have little trouble finding the cockpit. Ships tend to have them in the same place. When you enter, you find it quite a bit smaller than you expected. There is little room for anything but the wheel and a co-pilot's chair.

He shrugs and leaves the cockpit, and you find yourself alone but for the hum of the engines.

It isn't for several hours that you find time to take a break from steering. The young man comes back into the cockpit, now sans hood and wearing a harness with two pistols tucked beneath his arms. You groan, and hand him the wheel so that you can find something to fill you up. The kitchen is at the rear of the ship, one the middle deck and across from the crew quarters. Several members of the crew are sat around, sloppily eating bowls of mush and bread. There appears to be a chow line, same as the military used to have, where crewmen serve themselves. The rest of the night goes by rather smoothly by comparison. Riley isn't an open book by any means, but he doesn't mind keeping conversation. With or without your asking, he tells you a few stories about himself, which all seem completely fictional. At least you'd hope, considering some of the subject matter. You drain power from altitude, and begin descending toward the surface of the sea. You're careful not to drop too fast, lest you find yourself unable to slow down, and go crashing into the cold water. You hear a voice crackling over the PA, and recognize it to be Donna.

"What are you doing you idiot! You're gonna drown us!" This is followed by shuffling and grunting, and then you hear Riley.

"Pull back up! Let's fight these assholes! We can take em, there's enough ammo on this thing to blow a forte out of the sky!"

Donna makes a snarky comment that you don't have time for, and agrees. Soon you can hear the ship's guns revving up. Riley won't be happy about not being able to fight up close, but you're not worried about him throwing a tantrum in the face of death.

You reach the water, and watch as the ocean spray begins splashing up against the windshield and leaving along the bottom. You can see one of the ships moving in front of you and losing speed, trying to get you to slow down or hit it.

You call their bluff, and give full power to the engines. You can feel yourself pulling back as the ship speeds up, and the small ship in front draws closer. Soon they seem to figure out your intention, and slide sideways to aim their side guns. You think things might get very hairy, until the forward guns of your own ship fire a volley. Their accuracy leaves much to be desired, and they hit water. The spray this sends up nearly blocks out your view, and you are forced to pull up. You feel the bottom of your ship crash into something, presumably the enemy slider, and then you settle.

The PA comes online, "Two enemies left. They're coming about our sides, they want to box us in."

A) Maintain speed and let the gunners handle it

You pull the ship to the port side, and call out over the PA for the crew to brace themselves. Even without the PA, you can hear Riley's hooting and hollering. Soon, there is a great shake as you collide with the smaller ship, and the shouts of the crew. You keep on them a minute longer, keeping the distance comfortable for the boarding crew. A volley from the starboard side shakes the ship again.

Soon you hear Donna on the PA. "Riley and some of the crew are over there. They're outnumbered, but he refused to wait for- SHIT! What?!" The voice cuts out there.

Finally, you hear the PA come online, and Riley speaks, "Hahaha! Fuck yeah! Pull us away man, I'm gonna sink that shitty tub!"

You pull away with all speed, not letting Riley waste ammo on a dead ship. You tell the crew to brace again, and soon feel the crunch of steel on steel, and a loud scraping noise fills the ship. More hollering from above, and gunfire.

In a matter of minutes, the din settles, and Donna tells you to straighten out and bring the ship back up. You do so, and are soon met by Riley and Donna as they descend into the cockpit. Riley is limping and covered in dry blood. One of his pistols is still smoking, whether from celebratory gunfire or actual killing strokes. He approaches and places a filthy hand on your shoulder.

"Good flying you maniac! I wish you'd have let me finish that ship off though. I spread fuel all over the deck just to watch it burn. Ah, all's well what ends well I guess." He strides over to the co-pilot chair, panting and licking his lips, and sits down. Donna approaches you, keeping her voice down.

"You're insane, do you know? You could have sent half the crew flying off the side of the damn ship with those stunts."

You plot a course for a few miles and switch to the auto-pilot. That done, you quietly make your way out of the cockpit and down toward the cargo bay. Most of the people on deck just glance at you as you pass. It seems like almost everyone is resting or eating, considering how few people are up top. Once you slide down into the cargo bay, you begin stepping quietly so as not to alert anyone who may be on guard. As you peek around a corner, you find yourself in luck. There's only one man on duty, and he is sound asleep in a chair, with his own hat on his face for a blind. This may be your best chance to check out the goods.

You find a few iron crates covered in a tarp, and carefully lift it up. There are two, on small and long, and the other much larger.

This one is much more ornate, made of polished wood with leafing all around the edges. With a simple turn of the latch, you open it and look inside. There is a longsword in a white scabbard. It looks quite old, but well cared for. It is layed in a custom made satin pillow, indented to protect it from sliding around. There are also some other bits of jewelry in the case along with it.

You grab a hold of the handle and begin pulling the blade out. As you do a sharp pain shoots up your arm, and you drop the sword entirely. You look at your hand and see that it is lightly burned, as if you had held your hand to a boiling pot.

"Eh? Who's there?"

As the guard stirs out of sight, you realize you must have let out a cry when you were burned. You swiftly tuck the sword back into place and shut the crate. You hear footsteps drawing in.

"My dad fought. He was a marine. Corporal. He was one of the first men to be shipped out to fight. He fought aboard a ship hanging over this bloody sea for almost three years. He wrote to my mother nearly every week. He used to talk about how fun it was being on a ship and exploring the world. He never once mentioned the battles. Then one day the letters stopped coming. We got one from the desk of the governor, saying that his ship had been brought down near the gulf. He was coming home, in fact, when a slider snuck up on their platoon and sunk him. My mom took it hard, and without him sending money she had to get a job. She got chewed up by some machinery at a foundry a year later, and then I was out on the street."

You tell her you're sorry for that, but she stops you. "Don't worry about it. The first geezer who put money down for me got more than he bargained for. I bit his cock off and spit it in his face. After that nobody wanted to touch me, but rather than dump me in the ocean, the boss made me do some dirty jobs for him instead. You get to your hands and knees and crawl behind some nearby debris. There, you lean up against the twisted metal and check the rifle. Three shots left, and nowhere to secure more.

The sound of feet again, but this time slower. You slow your breathing and try to stay low and still. You hear odd clucking, deeper than a normal hen. The creature seems to know that you're around, but can't detect you. Popping out of cover would be to your disadvantage, as you'd have to aim whereas he would not. You decide to wait it out, and hope that it either forgets you or comes close enough to take down in a single shot.

Minutes go by as the beast searches for you. Finally it begins to close in, and you prepare to make your last stand. You hear its talons touch on the metal of the ship, as it slowly begins closing in on you. You shut your eyes and hope that you make it out alive.

Then, you jump out and fire, just once.
