Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage, labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. You've only just entered an ancient long forgotten ruin buried deep underground for some unknown purpose. It is one of only a handful of ruins found with an active generator, a type of artifact that produces vast amounts of energy with seemingly no input or fuel.

You decide to explore the right pathway. After all, the path less traveled often leads to more loot, or something like that. You're paraphrasing. You peer into the darkness for a moment while reaching for the lantern at your hip. Gently, you detach it from your belt and carefully channel some vys into your palm. You release it with a burst, and the lantern springs to life. You think the front of it might actually be glowing, though you can't be sure. You reattach it to your belt and delve into the gloom.

In the narrow hallways, your lantern does a good job of illuminating the area. You can clearly make out all the minute details, few though they are. You note thick groupings of metal cord lining the top of the hallways on either side, they're banded together by rings of metal which glow faintly with what you think might be letters, though not from any language you understand. Come to think of it, they remind you of the glowing symbols you see whenever you channel vys into that metal plate guarding your forearm to take your armor on or off.
(1/2 or 3)
>>
As you proceed further down the hallway, you start to notice splotches of brown here and there. Usually grouped next to gashes in the metal walls or holes in the grating. At first, you merely thought it was rust, but quickly realize that there is far too little moisture in the air to rust iron. If you had to guess, you'd say it was blood from some long forgotten battle. You've seen no corpses or skeletons or even dropped equipment along the hall though. Who might have been invading this underground complex is also beyond you, you're not even sure how one would get into this facility under normal circumstances.

Eventually the hallway ends in a small metal hatch, with a wheel on your end. It seems locked in place by two long metal bars, which you think the wheel might control. You can faintly make out Rhynian letters along either side of the hatch, though you don't understand the words and the red paint they were written in has long since faded or begun to flake off. As you reach for the hatch to open the door you feel Chryssa tap your shoulder, and almost jump out of your skin.

“Maybe... this is not wise. Some things are best left forgotten. This place feels wrong.”

You're inclined to dismiss her protest as paranoia, besides the ominous signs and the stale air you've sensed nothing amiss on a magical level.

It means both!
Effects like Burst, Ranged, and Weapon Channeling are pretty basic, most Vatis know them.
Effects like leaping require a lot more finesse and skill, they're common but not terribly so.
Effects like Permanency, Vys, and Time are damn near impossible to find and incredibly hard to master to boot.

You learn each metamagic effect individually though. Not as a lump of spells like you do with elements.

>>
You ignore Chryssa's protest for a moment, grabbing hold of the locking wheel. You hesitate before opening the hatch though. “If there is something wrong and we leave it alone, it will simply grow worse until either someone else opens the door or it breaks free of these confining walls and spreads into the countryside.” You can't recall anything of that sort actually happening before, you've never heard of magical contamination or anything of the sort, but you suppose there is a first time for everything. The Rhynians were known for dabbling with that best left alone.

Chryssa doesn't say anything, though you note she draws an arrow from her quiver and nocks it, backing away from the hatch while you're preparing to turn the wheel. Suddenly though, an idea strikes you. “Wait, my armor has some strange capabilities. Maybe it can interact with the ruins somehow?” Chryssa scrunches up her brow. “Well, I suppose there's a chance. Don't waste time though, I want to get this over with already...”
(1/2 or 3)
>>
Well who made her the Queen of Time Mana-whatever, neither here nor there. You set your spear aside gently and raise your forearm guard into the lantern light. Carefully, you channel a minute amount of Vys into the guard. A fraction of a fraction of your capacity. It springs to life, but does not unlock your armor like a sudden burst of power does. Instead a panel slides away, just like it had when you put the armor on for the first time, and precise blue characters are displayed against the screen.

You alter the flow of vys subtly, shifting it to water. You feel the subtle hum that pervades the ruin fill your head, slowly becoming deafening though not painful, uncomfortable perhaps. You can feel a throbbing, pulsing power from the metal cords lining the tops of the hallway, and on a whim you channel the vys flowing into your wrist guard towards one of the thick glowing rings binding the cords together.

There's a flash, and your vision cuts out.
(2/3)
>>
When next you become conscious of your surroundings, your ears are wringing painfully and your vision is filled with spots. You've fallen to one knee on the ground, hands clutching at where your ears would be if they were not covered by the helmet. Slowly your senses fade back into clarity, though the ringing persist at the edge of your hearing. You note that the cords have been severed neatly, the ring you channeled vys into sitting on the ground cracked in half and no longer glowing.

Chryssa is staring at you like you've gone insane. Well, actually that might just be her default expression. It's hard to tell. “You've been crouched like that ever since the cords broke. Did... something happen?”

Well, that was unpleasant. Painful, in fact. You're not going to try that again. “Yes, well. I tried forcing some power into that ring. It... didn't go well.” Chryssa glares at you. “The middle of a ruin is no place to start experiments! What if you fiddle with something you don't understand and get hurt? Actually, not what if, that's what you just did!” Okay, well, she has a point there. You raise your hands in mock surrender. “I know, I know, there's just something else I have to try.”

She doesn't stop glaring, but at least doesn't nag you any further. You note the panel has slid back into place since you blacked out, so you channel more vys into the gauntlet. It springs to life once more, apparently undamaged. Taking a closer look at the characters they're definitely letters or symbols of some sort, but you don't know from what language. They're not Rhynian, or at least not any Rhynian symbol you've ever seen.

You attempt to subtly switch the flow of vys from raw energy to fire magic. It... doesn't go well. You don't have enough control over fire to properly control it yet, and what ends up happening is the flow turns into a sudden burst and you instead just end up blasting the floor with a gout of flame.

Well, that wasn't entirely unproductive, but you definitely need to be more knowledgeable about an element before you try channeling it into this weird gauntlet. The panel slides closed now that the vys flow is cut off and Chryssa motions to the door. “Get on with it, oh daring adventurer.”

Was that actually sarcasm? You're surprised she understands sarcasm. With a grumble you grab hold of the wheel and twist it to the unlocked position. Then, before pushing it open, you take your spear in hand and hold it at the ready. With a light kick the hatch sails open smoothly, the hinges making not a sound, and you're faced with the cavernous chamber beyond.

The first thing that catches your eye are the... statues? You think they're statues facing into the gloom that blankets the chamber beyond the golden glow of your lantern. They're great metal things, a long pole with a hole bored down the center of it extending towards the rest of the chamber. They have four wheeled legs, and they seem meant to be carted around. Some sort of fleshy mass is draped over them though, binding them to the floor.
(2/3, I lied)
>>
Looking past the statues, you take a few steps further into the chamber. The floor seems spider webbed with that fleshy mass. It almost reminds you of some sort of fungus that you might see growing over a rotting log or stale bread. You poke part of the mass with your foot and it yields easily, no response of course. You start to patrol the edges of the room and find that the mass seems to originate from what you can only assume are vents, spilling forth to blanket the near-by walls and crawl along the floor.

There are also two doors in the room, on opposite ends of the chamber. They're both metal hatches much like the one you entered through, neither of them closed. One seems to lead into another long hallway, where as the other was so gummed over with that fleshy stuff you'd need to cut through it to get a look.

You return to the hatch you entered through, taking a look at those statues. They seem to have a place for somebody to sit, and controls on a panel next to the seat. Perhaps not statues, but some kind of... looking glass sort of device? The control panels are both long since dead, the fleshy mold seeming to have grown into the cords and the control panels themselves. They're shot completely but maybe if you managed to disassemble them and take them above ground you might find something interesting about them.

As you're investigating the statues, you hear what sounds like stomping against the metal grating that makes up the floor of the hallway to your left. It's approaching fast, you'd say there's at least two people. They're probably running. How could they have survived so long down here without food and water though? Perhaps they've been eating the mold?

You duck down behind the statue you're inspecting, and motion for Chryssa to get down. She slips into position behind the other statue and draws her arrow back, aiming her bow at the hallway the noise is coming from. Quickly you extinguish your lantern so as to prevent the glow from giving you away. The room is plunged into total darkness. You can barely see your hand in front of your face, let alone the entrance to the hallway.

You belatedly realize the door is open and that's sure to give you away, but that can be dealt with later. It's only moments later that the stomping footsteps reach the room and stop abruptly. You can hear someone panting, though you only hear one person. Footsteps pad lightly across the metal floor as they approach the statues where you're hiding. Two pair, although you note the gait is odd. Perhaps not two people, but an animal of some sort? Regardless, you can barely see five feet in front of you with the lights off like this.

As the creature grows closer, you can start to make out a hazy outline. It's definitely quadrupedal, and it seems... unnatural. It's torso is bulbous and misshapen, its head lacks definition, like a sculptor abandoned his work half-finished. It has two muscular back legs and two relatively scrawny front legs which it uses to support itself. You think you might actually be able to pick out exposed musculature, or maybe that's bone?

It sniffs in your general direction, closing in. Apparently it's having just as much trouble seeing you as you are it, but it's got a sharper nose evidently. It's definitely picked up your scent, but it doesn't seem to know what the scent is. You channel a little vys and cram yourself tightly into the crux between the statue's control panel and its leg. Eventually, it seems to give up and instead follow your scent through the hatch you entered through, towards the surface.

You let it pass, and hear it tromping off down the hallway you entered through. After you can no longer hear it you get up and switch the lantern back on with a simple spell. Its glow once more weakly illuminates the room and you're relieved to see there isn't an army of whatever those creatures were waiting for you. Chryssa has lowered her bow, and is glaring at you again. She's been doing that a lot lately, it's starting to get annoying.

She whispers as the two of you proceed towards the flesh covered doorway. “What happened to all that talk of putting a stop to whatever the problem was before it could get worse?! You just let it 'escape into the countryside'!”

Oh, well, you suppose you did say that didn't you? You wave her off and whisper back. “Relax, the other adventurers will take care of it. It won't hurt anybody. Probably just an animal that got in.”

She mumbles something in her own language you don't understand. “Listen, you idiotic foreigner. Animals don't just 'get in' to these facilities. Is this the first Rhynian ruin you've ever dived? That was one of their failed experiments!”

Huh, is that what she meant by magical experiments earlier? Well that makes a lot more sense than some spell gone awry, though you've got no earthly idea how the Rhynians would create a lifeform with magic.

You sigh, and go back to shut the door to prevent anything else from fleeing into the ruin. You note that there is a heavy iron handle on the door you could use to open it from this side, since it's no longer locked. Also, it might just be your imagination, but you think that fungus has crept closer to the door than when you entered this room. It hadn't reached the door, but you're glad you shut it now that you take the time to notice it.

You return to Chryssa and keep heading for the growth-covered door. "There, now nothing else will get out unless someone else opens the door. Why don't you explain the etiquette of ruin exploration so I don't step on any other toes?"

She shoots back with. "First off, if you say something stick by it. Don't just string together nice words to get someone to fall in line. Then, be more careful about what you touch with your weird magic-" And once more, she slips into her own language. Well, she's rather angry. You'll try to deal with her once she calms down.

You draw your dagger from your belt and quickly cut away the fleshy growths that block your path. They begin to bleed... which is unsettling. It's definitely blood though. You try to ignore it and cut through the rest of the fleshy mass before carefully stepping through the door into the room beyond.

(1/2)
>>
It's not much better off than the door, truth be known. It's covered in whatever that growth is, and you also note a number of throbbing clumps interspersed pretty regularly around the room. They almost remind you of a heart, the way they rhythmically expand and contract in time with one another. It's almost like it's some sort of living thing.

The room itself might have once been an armory, or a barracks, but it's hard to tell with the fleshy mass covering everything. It's not as large as the last room, and the ceiling is markedly lower.

You gesture around, this is far beyond anything you've experienced before. This wasn't mentioned in any obscure book your master forced you to read. Nothing you've ever seen or heard about is even vaguely similar. You're going to ask the closest thing to an expert you have available.

“Okay... I admit, I'm in over my head here. What is this?” Oddly enough, you don't feel particularly panicked. A little creeped out, a little squeamish maybe, but not panicky.

Chryssa pokes one of the pulsing 'hearts' with her foot, and it doesn't seem particularly affected. “Every experiment is different, usually they're animals of some sort... this is... I don't know what this is. Maybe they tried to make some kind of... combination of... man and plant? That would be my best guess.” Well, she seems to have calmed down at least, somewhat.

You take a look around, and decide that this shouldn't be allowed to spread. “I'll be honest... I'd rather just burn it all and be done with it. I don't care what they were trying to accomplish with this, it failed and it needs to be wiped out.” Maybe if they'd succeeded it would be a different story, but this is horrible.

Chryssa nods her head in agreement. “I agree. We need to destroy what we can and then get out to tell the others.” Well, at least you can agree on some things without it turning into some big argument.

You raise your hand and prepare to cast a fire spell powerful enough to set the whole thing ablaze, but something stops you. You thought you spotted something looking at you from around a corner. You stare at the hallway for a moment. Contemplating.

Yeah, nah. This place has to go. You channel vys into your palm and, with a little bit of concentration, force it out of your body. A ball of flame springs to life, hovering over the palm of your hand. It burns much brighter than your lantern, shadows dancing oddly against the grey metal walls as the hearts beat silently. You think you see fingers clutching the edge of the wall where you saw the figure.

You aim for the fingers. The fireball expands into a corona of flame as it connects with the wall, expanding until the flames die out and smoke billows into the room. You smell burning flesh, and the mass around you starts to writhe and struggle, as if it were trying to distance itself from the torched section.

The flames lick at its body, crawling their way across it slowly. At first you think it might be an old woman in a shroud, but you quickly realize that its face is contorted far past what's natural, and it seems to be made up of innumerable strings of flayed skin. As it spots you, well, as it levels its empty sockets in your general direction, its mouth twist itself open and releases a echoing shriek. Perhaps it's just your imagination, but it seems to be answered by other shrieks from further into the ruin...

You can tell the beast is clearly weakened, and it's already on fire so another fireball probably wouldn't do a hell of a lot of good. lower your spear, and wait for it to charge forward. That's what it's poised to do, after all. You feel an arrow whiz by your head and see it thump into the things torso. It glances down at the arrow, seemingly completely unconcerned as blood starts to trickle from the wound, and charges towards you.

It moves strangely. It's not a lumbering gate, like you'd expect from a creature so large. It seems to flow across the fleshy growth covering the floor. Fortunately for you, this means it spreads the fire wherever it goes, leaving a trail of burning flesh in its wake. That fireball really seems to have started an inferno.

It tries to jerk to the side as it gets close to you to dodge you're spear, but you were ready and stick it through the chest. If it had been at all human, that would've been the end of it. A spear through the heart. Instead that part of its chest separates slowly into its component strands of flesh. It starts to slide its way down your spear shaft towards you.
>Oh Pani, Surya, Rhynian gods! Drop the spear and back away.

>Man, I'm rolling low today. Y'all lucked out.

You press your hand against the thing's face, and it doesn't seem to understand what's happening. In fact, it leans into your hand, the fleshy tendrils that make up the creature separating to drag your hand into its body. As the first tendril makes contact, it burns horribly. Like someone dipped your hand in fire. You discharge the spell on instinct alone.

A jet of flame burst through the back of the creature's head, causing the rest of it to slough off or hang in bloody strips from its neck, or well, what you think is its neck. It starts to regenerate, but seems to be having trouble because it's still on fire. As it stumbles away, releasing your spear from its grasp, Chryssa's arrow punctures its gut again and the thing gurgles, perhaps an attempt at a screech, before finally losing cohesiveness and falling to the floor as a amorphous mass.

The fire has spread, in fact it's starting to get a little too close for comfort and the smoke is starting to choke you. You can't stay in this room much longer.

You push further futher into the room, away from the fire and the smoke. You're not leaving this place until you destroy whatever it is that caused this monstrosity to come into being. Chryssa follows you, assisting your search for some way to get further into the complex.

Eventually you cut away a portion of the growth covering the walls to reveal another hatch. This one seems to have been forced open by the fleshy tendrils, the hatch itself has been taken off its hinges and is supported solely by the odd tissue. You cut the rest of the tendrils holding it in place and step aside so it can fall to the floor with a heavy thud.

Smoke starts to billow into the hallway you just open, and you and Chryssa clamber through the doorway to escape the growing inferno. It doesn't seem like you'll be able to get back out that way, at least not until the fire has well and truly finished burning. Instead you push onwards, the lantern lighting your path. You get a twinge of unease as you approach the next corner...

Maybe it's just paranoia, but you know something is around that next corner. You stop, and brace you're spear. Just as you'd predicted, from around the corner leaps... not one of those weird stringy mutants you fought earlier, but something that bears much closer a resemblance to that thing you let escape earlier.

Its legs seem rooted to the fleshy growth that covers the floor, and its arms almost seem like they're about to slough off. Its spine is exposed along its back, revealing hints of green and rot. Its eyes are glazed over with thick cataracts, leaving them milky and unseeing. It bears its teeth in a lipless snarl, fresh blood dripping from sharp, crooked teeth. It's probably about the size of a man at full height, but hunched over like it is it's much smaller.

Chryssa taps your shoulder, you don't look away from the creature. “There's one behind us, I'll take care of it while you watch the front.”

You channel vys throughout your body and tuck into a roll, spear clutched to your chest to prevent breaking it or impaling yourself. You spring to your feet at the end, on the opposite side of the creature.
>Vys Pool: (7/14) You're starting to feel tired, hollowed out, depressed. Rest or meditation would be wise.

You can see Chryssa clearly from this position. You think... she's trying to stab a dagger through her enemy's skull, but the thick plate of bone is preventing her success. The arrow has been buried pretty far into its eye at this point, but it evidently snapped off before killing the thing.

You also glance to your left, further down the hallway, and see a soft blue glow emanating from behind a pried open hatchway. You think that might be your goal.

There's no time for contemplation unfortunately. The monster in front of you lunges at you with mouth spread wide.

Well, you see the solution to this problem pretty easily. You drop into a low stance and at the same time thrust the spear forward, driving it through the roof of the creature's mouth and out the back of its head due to a combination of your forward thrust and its own momentum towards you. It starts twitching violently, so you brace a foot against its throat and shove to remove it from your spear before it snaps the wooden haft.

Chryssa seems less lucky. She loses her grip on the things head for a moment and it whips its head around to bite into her forearm. She cries out, and tries to wrench her arm free, but its locked firmly to her arm. She growls deep in her chest and raises her dagger high in the air before driving it down into the thing's skull. There's a crack, and its jaw clenches down harder around her arm as it starts its death throws.

You hear her arm snap, and she cries out again, much more pained than surprised like before, dropping her dagger and desperately trying to pry its jaws free of what you can only assume is her now broken arm.

Understandable. There may be times we're forced to team up with someone we hate, and we'd much rather leave them to die.
>>
You rush over, setting your spear down by your side and grabbing hold of the top portion of the things jaw. She grabs the lower. You brace yourself and both of you pull, eventually managing to pry the things mouth open even though your fingers get rather cut up in the process. She jerks her arm out of its mouth and clutches it to her chest, cradling it gently to prevent shifting the bone any further. It's nothing serious though, you heal them at the cost of a fraction of your vys pool, not even enough to be worth mentioning.

Chryssa is less lucky. Her arm is certainly snapped, the lower half of her forearm hangs at an awkward angle and you can see the bone pushing through the muscle, although it's not a compound fracture. The gashes left by the creature's teeth are simply that deep. You could heal it, but it would be expensive. You'd have to start with the bone, and then do the cuts. Each step would drain some of your vys.

Water magic actually pulls the full monty when it comes to healing. Sterilizes and closes the wound.
>>
You gently take hold of her arm, starting to channel Vys into your palms already. “Relax, relax. I can heal this no problem. You'll have some tiny scars, but that's it. Just, don't panic.” You really don't want to be near someone as strong as her when she panics.

You carefully maneuver her lower forearm into position, and she seethes. By the gods, it's weird seeing someone muscles flex up close without skin covering them. Grotesque, really. Eventually you think you have the break lined up correctly and you discharge the vys stored in your hands. It flows into the wound and to the bone, slowly the crack seals as new bone forms and solidifies. Then you push more vys into the wound to close the gashes. It looks just as you said by the end, a few thin scars but otherwise as good as new.

She clenches and unclenches her fist, before sighing gratefully. “I owe you, we can speak later. Lets finish this quickly before the whole place swallows us up.” You nod, and stand. Once she's rearmed herself with her bow and stuffed her dagger back into its hidden sheath in her sleeve, the two of you set off for the blue glow you saw emanating from the next room up.

After you cut away the flesh keeping the hatch held aloft, you're greeted by the sight of... well, you can really only describe them as row upon row of pods. Most of them have gone dark, it seems, but one glows with a stark blue light. It seems to be the last one still powered. Another one down the line seems to be the source of your trouble. A giant mass of flesh pulses and throbs in its center, crawling its way across adjacent pods and across the floor, eventually up the walls and into the vents.

You can only imagine this is the source of your troubles.

You march with determination towards the pulsing, throbbing heart of this monstrosity. You channel vys into your palm, feeling a sickly pallor sink into your skin and twist its way up your forearm. Your hand grows pail, taking on a grotesque purple tinge as the magic focuses itself.

As you reach the heart, you press your hand to it and discharge the magic. You see a change almost immediately. Black begins to seep into the flesh of the heart, and it stutters. The beat becomes irregular, weakened. You can actually watch its progress as it seeps into the fleshy cords at your feet, and proceeds towards the vents and out the door you entered through. It seems your plan worked. Poison the heart, and the body dies. Now you just need to wait to make sure the heart itself eventually stops, and it doesn't just weaken the thing.

As you step away and head towards the hatch you entered through, since that's the only apparent entrance to this room and you'd like to not be taken by surprise, you notice that Chryssa seems rather taken with the blue pod. She stares curiously at the glass panel on the front, and only then do you realize its got characters displayed on the front. In fact, it sort of reminds you of your weird gauntlet.

Well, nothing was ever gained by waiting. A completely fallacious statement, you realize, but it seems appropriate at the moment. “Lets open it, at worst it'll be weak and easy to kill. At best it'll be an ally to help us off the rest of these things.” She nods her head slowly, placing her hands on her hips as she takes a closer look at the control panel.

After a moment she sighs. “I can't make heads or tales of this. I know the symbols are Rhynian. This one means off, though that's not what we want.” You step away from the door, to get a closer look. Come to think of it, that same symbol is on your gauntlet. Maybe they had colloquial meanings? She continues. “This one means on, though it's not lit up so it's obviously already on. I think these control the temperature...” Well, those are just up and down buttons. Simple enough.

You notice a pull handle on the side of the door that says PROLUO in big bold letters and all caps. That seems... important. “Here, step aside, I got an idea.” She does as you ask, and you pull the lever down. A loud alarm sounds, unlike anything you've heard before. It's grating and low. The blue glow changes to red, and the door snaps open forcefully, spilling some thick gel-like liquid all over the floor.

Taking a peek inside, you see a male elf. He's probably about... twenty years old? There-abouts? He looks normal enough, except that his left arm all the way past the shoulder seems entirely made of stone, and you think it might be glowing faintly. So he's not really all that normal, you realize.

He also seems to be unconscious, or sleeping at least. He slumps forward and Chryssa only barely catches him before his head slams into the metal pod door. She drags him out and sets him down off to the side. You walk up next to him and lean on your spear while you try to decide just exactly what to make of him.

Wake that boy up.

You lean down, and pinch his nose shut. Your older brother always used to do that to you when you were napping in the afternoons. It infuriated you, but it also woke you up every damn time. Hopefully that will hold true here as well.

He starts to struggle after a short while, panic, and then his eyes snap open and he starts thrashing around. You're careful to avoid the stone arm lest you end up with a bruise the size of a man's head on your thigh. It isn't long after that he rolls over and starts vomiting more of that clear gel-like substance into the floor. You and Chryssa watch on amusedly. “I wonder if I was like that, I don't really remember what happened after I woke up...” You hear her muttering to herself.

You take a moment to get a better look at him, since he seems to be done throwing his guts up. His ears are rather long, even by elven standards, and he's extremely pale. You know modern elves are rather diluted with human and samja blood, and so they tend to be both darker skinned and have shorter ears than their ancestors. If you had to guess, this guy was a hundred percent elf. No cross breeding with any other races, besides whatever gave him that stone arm that is.

Shakily, he tries to stand. He has to support himself against one of the darkened pods to do it. It kind of reminds you of a baby taking their first steps, he's still trying to figure out muscle control but he's catching on fast. When he finally turns around and notices you he visibly flinches, eying your weapons warily. “Where am I? Who are you? Why did you wake me up?” He's speaking Rhynian. Proper Rhynian, with an accent you don't recognize. His voice is deep but airy and very light, just barely above a whisper. Almost like he's uncertain whether or not it's actually his.

Not to mention that the Rhynian Empire was a human empire.

You clear your throat, and try to think of what you know about Rhynian. “Relax, we're friends.” You see him wrinkle his nose, and suddenly realize that to him you must sound like a country bumpkin slurring through something that sounds vaguely like his own language. “You've been down here for a long time. What do you remember?”

He draws himself up, and almost goes tumbling again. Instead he tries to lean against the darkened pod with dignity. “I remember...” He slumps down, as he comes to a realization. “I don't remember anything, really. I'm not even sure what my name is, or how I know this language...” He glances at his arm for a moment, before looking away again. Come to think of it he's been pointedly avoiding looking at the stone arm.

“Well, that's okay friend. You can work on memories as you go, and names are easy.” You try to sound comforting, you don't think it works out. “First off, you're in a ruined Rhynian facility. The Rhynian Empire fell about a thousand years ago, as far as anyone can tell. We woke you up because... well, we figured you'd like to be awake.”

His eyes go wide at your mention that the Empire fell. “What?! A thousand years ago! Gods be praised have I been in there that long?! It was only supposed to be a decade!” His voice had managed to raise itself to a proper shout, before he fell to a hacking fit. You note that Chryssa looks intensely perturbed by the revelation. The man seems on the edge of a panic attack or a breakdown. He's muttering that he doesn't even know how he knows how long he was supposed to be in there.

You leave him be, figuring it'll be good for him to work it out his own way while it's still fresh and deal with the implications later. You look to Chryssa and ask with a curious lilt to your voice. “So, is this how you acted when you found out?” She slowly shakes her head, not seeming very sure about it. “No... no, I don't think so. I didn't remember anything when I came to. My earliest memory is waking up in a bed and my father bringing in stew...”

Well, that certainly sounds more pleasant than 'waking up on the floor with some darkie pinching your nose and a giant beating heart twice the size of a man ten paces away'. Speaking of the heart, it's really starting to falter and slow now. It beats once every ten seconds or so, as opposed to the steady two beat rhythm it had going previously. The fleshy growths have started to whither and die around it, drying out, flaking off, or at the very least riddled with abscesses.

(1/2)

The man's been reduced to tears by this point, although he seems to be getting his act together again. He's not openly sobbing anymore, just the occasional choked sob and sniffling. Chryssa awkwardly pats his shoulder and you follow suit. “I think... my name was Profectus. That's the only other thing I can remember. Profectus, a decade, and this language.” Well, you won't tell him that his name means 'Progress' right this instant, you can bring it up later.

You decide it'd be best if your new companion was armed, but before you hand him the weapon an idea strikes you. “Wait, wait wait wait a second! Hey, you can read ancie-, well, Rhynian, right?”

He looks up to you, confused. “Y-” He pauses, seeming to think about it for a moment. “Yeah, I think so. I seem to remember how to read and write.” Oh, this is fantastic. You're going to get so much more done.

You hold out your gauntlet, and channel vys into it. The panel slides back revealing the smooth glass screen and the glowing symbols. “Could you tell me what these mean? I bought the armor, and I've been trying to figure it out...” He leans in close and peers at the screen, you can tell a sudden realization strikes him.

“This... this is Centurion Armor isn't it? By Diovis...I've never seen it up close before.” He hesitantly reaches out, and points to a symbol. “This, is off. It powers the armor down so you can remove it. This one activates the powered mode. It drains vys-” Hey, wait a minute. He says Vys too? Everyone else you've met seems to have some culturally specific name for it... “-in exchange for enhancing your physical characteristics. This one... this one I think puts the armor in maintenance mode. It will drain vys to repair itself. You grunt in acknowledgment, you'll need to play with this later. “What in Surya's Domain is a gas mask?” The elf scratches his chin, with his left hand at first, although that leaves a small scratch. He winces and lets it drop to his side. “It's like... well, when hazardous materials get in the air, it filters them out using Vys. It only activates when there are hazardous materials though.”

Damn, that sounds useful as all hell. For now though, you press the button he indicated and the panel slides shut, this time though a single section of the panel remains withdrawn, to show that same button. Except the symbol has been flipped.

Well, the more you know. You draw your dagger from your belt and pass it to him hilt-first. He balks, for a moment, before picking it up daintily like it might bite him at any moment. “It's a knife, not a snake.” Chryssa criticizes him, grabbing the dagger and pushing it into his hands properly. “Hold it tightly or you'll hurt yourself.”

You grin. “As my companion so inelegantly put it, this place is dangerous. You'll need a weapon to protect yourself.” He sighs, but relents. “Well... if you insist. I'll try not to screw up... badly.”
(2/3, I lied)
>>
It isn't long after that the heart finally stops beating. You wait around for a little while, but soon the putrid flesh that's left and makes up the heart starts to split and rot off. Vile black ichor spills forth from the wound, seeping into the great and eating away at it. Whatever it is must be caustic. The elf, Profectus you guess you should call him, flinches.

“Well, that's that I guess. Shall we get going, you two?” You ask, and they both nod. Chryssa confidently, Profectus as if he had no idea what it was he was agreeing too. The three of you make your way through the hallways of rotting or charred flesh, passing many of those creatures you previously fought like the amorphous mass of tendrils and the dog-things on the way. You always stop and finish them off. You and Chryssa that is. Profectus just stands back clutching his knife like a holy symbol.

You search through this wing of the building goes smoothly. You encounter a few pockets of monsters that weren't linked to the heart when you poisoned it, but you clean those up with prejudice. You don't even need to use any more vys to do it either, which is good because you feel pretty close to dropping dead here. Certainly, you can keep going, but the thought of a hot meal and a warm bed is almost enough to make you want to give up looting the place.

Almost.

As you're exploring the dimly lit hallways you come across a number of interesting items. First off, is a small sphere about the size of an apple. It fits comfortably in your palm, and has three holes for you to stick your fingers in. Profectus' face lights up when he sees it, and he snatches it up. “Ooh man, I loved these!” He says excitedly, sticking his fingers into the holes. The lines on the sphere start to glow with power, and then from the top of the sphere a flat plane of light appears. It seems to display some sort of... repeating image, or something? Of a past event, presumably. You realize it's not repeating either, it's more like a full visual record of the event. Gods, the Rhynians were a strange folk.
>Weird Sphere gained.

Neat shit. We could totally sell that as an expensive novelty.
>>

I hope MC isn't too tired to go deeper. The Elf probably knows how to get past the generator, as as the one's who've solved it, hopefully we get first dibs on loot beyond.

>>
>>30557853

I'm hoping e check the platform first.

Next is much simpler. Just a bag of gold coins. You pick it up and empty it into your hand, quickly counting them out. There's fourteen in all. Not a paltry sum, two hundred ten silver. Granted, you'll probably sell that sphere for way more money than this, but still it's nice to pad your pockets.
>New Wealth: 1402 silver (93gp, 7sp); Wealthy, very little is out of your price range.

After a little more exploring you come across an old library, but it seems to have long since been ransacked. There's not much of anything left except dust and a few tables, empty shelves. You do find one book, knocked under one of aforementioned shelves though. Dusting off its cover, you try to decipher the writing. Profectus ends up doing it for you. “Oh, that's a good one. 'How Earth Vatis Built the Empire'-” He pauses, thinking. “I'm... not sure how I know that's a good one.” Well, if anyone would know good books to read about Earth Magic it'd be the guy with the stone arm. You slip it into your courier's bag.
>>
The rest of the place has clearly already been gone over. Surely not by you, but maybe by Rhynians before they were forced to flee that hideous growth, or whatever it was that forced them to flee. Maybe the growth only broke out after the facility was abandoned.

>Drop Profectus off at the end, explore the rest of the ruin.

They might solve it though if we wait too long. I'm not stuck on the idea but I wonder if we can trust our companions to handle looting while we relax in the inn. They probably won't die with all these other adventurers around to help fight monsters.

Well if our companions aren't with us, again assuming they can handle looting without us, I'm not comfortable meditating here. The inn is safe and we'd be doing exactly as much good there as we would here.

Again, I don't want to idle around for too long, but I'm fine if we just want to take a breather like you guys want.

Damn, we get a lot done in these sessions. I'm glad I plan waaay far ahead for this kind stuff in a vague sense.
>Explore the rest of the ruin already.

Also, meditating seems popular. You could find a quiet spot and tell Chryssa and Profectus to wake you up in a certain amount of time, say an hour or two. You probably wouldn't be back to full but you also wouldn't be running on empty.

You retreat to the door you entered through, slipping out and locking it behind you. By all accounts, this was a pretty good dive. Even Chryssa seems content with it, despite how critical she was being at the beginning. She defers to you to lead the little posse through the hallways back to the area you entered through.

You pass a few fresh blood stains... well, that bodes ill. Then you round the corner to the path you entered through to see a barricade erected at the beginning of the hallway. A man wielding a long spear calls out. “Oh god! Three more of them coming! Crossbowmen, to arms!”

You throw your hands up in the air. “Wait, wait wait! No, not a monster! Just some adventurers... okay, well my friends are part monster but I'm just an adventurer!” Chryssa glares at you, and punches you in the arm. It hurts, because she's disproportionately strong. You'll probably bruise. Profectus doesn't seem to understand what's going on or what the hell a monster is.

The crossbowmen lower their arms, now that they can get a look at you. It's not like it's hard, considering your lantern is hanging off your hip. One of them slaps the spearman on the back of the head, which seems to irritate him. “Well... if you're adventurers how the hell did you get in there?! That thing that came runnin' out of this hallway tore out ol' Sam's throat before we could put it down!”

>>
>>30558492
First of all because we'd seen the guard earlier and he was already a dick.
Secondly he was drunk. You don't get drunk when you're ordered to kill some dude.

>>30558504
Okay let's be realistic, yes they were against us, but given if we hadn't killed anyone it would've won us some faith on the whole thing. If nothing else, the man's superior seemed at least aware his subordinate was a douche.
>>
>>30558548
I'm not blaming her for getting us banished, I'm just saying, her banishment isn't because of us. She killed the dude but there were other ways to handle the situation.

Anyway that's enough debate on this, I'd much rather more story.
>>
You launch into an explanation of your story. You could go all out and weave a narrative, play parts of it up, make it real entertaining, but you resist that urge. Instead you just give the facts. You mention finding the hatch, unlocking it, the fleshy growth and the shadows. Hiding from the beast, and its escape through the door before you could stop it. You do slip in a small white lie and say it was 'too fast' for you to shut the door before it escaped. Really, looking back on it now, you feel kind of guilty. You were acting like an ass.

Then you get into the chamber with the multiple secondary hearts, fighting off that tendril monster and the dog-creatures. The pod room (at which point you introduce Profectus, who waves), and poisoning the heart. You wrap the story up by detailing your purge of the rest of the wing, wiping out the rest of the beast so they would not plague the rest of the ruin. You also offer them condolences for their loss, and a brief apology.

By the end of your little tale you're on the other side of the barricade, talking to a small gathered crowd of about ten adventurers who seemed to volunteer for guard duty. One of them raises their hand, and you point to him. “So... does that mean its safe to loot the place?” That gets some laughs, and you grin. “Well, if you can find anything I didn't already take for myself feel free.”

(1/3)
>>
>>30558548
who said i was blaming her for that, the root of the cause was the guy was being a jew.
She is just one of the few things that made the situation worse.
>>
That breaks up the little meeting, a lot of people hopping the barricade to go explore the new area of the ruin you just opened up. Meanwhile you lead your party to a sheltered alcove near the door and sit down in a meditation position. “Listen, I'm exhausted after all that fighting. I'm going to rest for a little bit and recover. Do you think one of you could wake me in... two hours?”

They both nod, and look to one another. Chryssa speaks up first. “I call waiting inside.” Profectus scowls, and mumbles something, but heads outside. Meanwhile, you slip into a meditative trance rather easily.

This room is absolutely bursting with magical energy. It throbs, twist, and pulses in your mind. Compared to the usual hazy glow that surrounds most areas, this is a veritable sea. It seems especially thick in the floor, and around those clumps of wires. You reach the conclusion they must be channeling vys.

Over the course of two hours in this rich environment, you actually get more done than you expected. Instead of 3 vys, you end up with 5 vys gained back.
>Vys Pool: (9/14)
(2/3)
>>
You're woken at the two hour mark by Chryssa nudging you with the haft of your own spear. “Come on, time to get up. We've got things to do and a ruin to explore.” Well, she seems much more chipper at least.

You grab your spear and push yourself up. You feel revitalized, much less lethargic and drained. You also have a few options in front of you. This seems to be rush hour for ruin exploration, a constant stream of adventurers is walking by in front of you, most headed for the generator. That platform to your left is largely ignored.

>>30558551
No. You don't get faith by fighting with the city guards. Everyone was biased against us, they'll see it as a dangerous aggressive act on our part.

>>30558573
We tried other ways. Talking didn't work, running didn't work, they had us cornered with weapons drawn. Whether they lived or died didn't matter, we fought them and that's a crime punishable by death. Nobody would come to the outsider's defense.

You head left, towards that platform you saw previously. You never really got to take a good look at it before being plunged into that dark hellhole to the right.

Stepping onto the metal grate that makes up the platform and walking to the end, you find yourself in a cavernous room lined by what you can only describe is devices of arcane purpose. Great cables, thicker than a man is wide, channel energy to the device below you, which glows softly with power. It's massive, and almost looks like some sort of... well, to be honest you have no idea what the hell this would do.

As you reach the end of the platform, a control panel greets you with its friendly blue glow. You recognize a few familiar symbols. One says on, another off. The off one isn't glowing, so it must already be off. Lots of up and down arrows and charts too. You're a little hesitant to mess with it. Profectus speaks up. “Well... this is unfamiliar. You press the on button, and the machine hums to life. The platform you're on detaches from the entryway to the rest of the ruin, and slide upwards a good ten feet. The basin where the central, glowing device sits cracks apart, and begins to slowly turn. The central portion meanwhile stays static, as the rest begins to spin faster and faster.

As the glow in the central portion of the device starts to intensify, you assume the worst. This is some ancient Rhynian weapon designed just before the fall of the empire, far too powerful to ever actually merit use. You've surely doomed yourself and the rest of the people in the ruin to a painful death when this thing malfunctions and kills you all. Instead though... it's actually rather underwhelming. A narrow beam of light shoots between the central platform and the... chandelier that hangs above it. Then another. Then a series of rapid beams. Then a long, drawn out beam. Then more rapid beams... it's almost like some sort of code.

(1/2)
>>
After that the machine grinds to a slow halt, and the platform you stand on as well as the portions of the device itself slide back into their original positions. Well damn, that was underwhelming... maybe it malfunctioned, or the settings were wrong? Of course, there might be an instruction manual or something deeper in the ruin. Chryssa stairs at the control panel for a moment. “I have a bad feeling about this.” Profectus waves her off. “Oh nonsense! It probably just malfunctioned or something. Busted old piece of junk. Not a proper Rhynian machine I'll tell you that! We built our stuff to last!”

>>30559182
Fire Vatis are basically immune to fire damage once they reach Grandmaster level. They could walk through an inferno unharmed.

At master level, they can produce flames hot enough to create good quality steel and other metals. That's actually how a lot of the best blacksmiths get their materials in your homeland, contracting fire vatis to do it for them.

Mainly fire magic only increases in scale the higher up the ladder you go. So while you can make a small, palm-sized fireball. A grandmaster could go full super sayan for the same amount of Vys.

>>30559162

so instead of it taking 2 vys it would have taken 1 to heal the girl and if we were grand master it would leave no scars correct?
>>
>>30559359
There are a few people throughout history that have mastered Fire, Earth, Water, Metal, and Nature. They've typically gone on to become warlords or lead rebellions or kill themselves when they get old. Or all of the above.

Air is not one of the elements anyone knows of because I blatantly ripped from the basic Chinese elements. So sadly, no going full on Avatar.

I think I'll include it in the character sheet next thread. Under Mundane Bonuses.

>Phobias and Hobbies
I keep looking for a good point to bring it up in the story, and I was kinda working towards that with the Oud, but haven't managed to find a spot I like. I'll probably just have one of the side characters ask you about hobbies soon. Profectus seems like the nosy sort, I think he'll do it.

We already know his hobbies. Drinking and magic. Magic just also happens to be part of primary occupation/fighting style

So what's metal exactly? Are they just Magneto powers?
>>

They're like magneto powers, and perhaps at grandmaster they could be as bullshit OP as magneto powers, but really they're more about reinforcing armor/your body/your mind against unwanted intrusions. Lots of anti-magic in the metal school.

so can you add fire and earth/metal together to create magma?

also i dont know if i just skipped over the next time you plan to host, when is that
