You are Captain WILLIAM PIERCE, a combat rescue officer of the United States Air Force.

Currently, you are flying over Russia-occupied Poland in the dead of night on an ultra risky rescue mission. While you knew that it was part of the job as a PJ, you were never fully comfortable flying over enemy territory.

Reflecting the danger, both your Ghost Hawk, Ugly's Comanche, and the three witches accompanying you have turned off all their running and navigation lights. Basically the only thing keeping you on a steady course was your nightvision gear and your brand new integrated GPS uplink. So far, none of you have encountered any enemy resistance or any signs that you have been detected.

"We're nearing the target point." Bullseye announces." We're about an hour ahead of the deadline."

You nod. That would give you enough time to recon the area.

>Send the witches on recon while you and Ugly standby. They'll be harder to detect.

"Janice, Tarin, Nungesser, I need you three to pull recon." You whisper. "Sweep the area and tag anything, and I mean ANYTHING that draws your attention. Got it?"

"Copy that." All three witches affirm and you see them split off through the green haze of your nightvision goggles.

"What about us?" Ugly asks.

"Ugly, you remain on standby with us."

Long minutes pass as both of your helos orbit in the air, and you're very glad for the sound dampening measures Christina implemented. You're sure that even the relatively quiet Pave Hawk would've given itself away by now. You check the time again, and frown. Almost thirty minutes have passed.

"This is Janice. I've found the town the Polish cell is supposed to be based out of. Nothing out of the ordinary, but I see a lot of traffic, which is odd for this hour."

"Tarin reporting. I've found the forward airbase. Multiple SAMs and ZSUs stationed around it. I can also confirm a squadron of Flankers and a few assorted helos on the runway."

"This is Nungesser. I saw some traffic going in and out of the forest between the town and the base, but the trees are preventing me from getting any good line of sight. No sign of Russian forces or equipment, though."

You pause to consider your options. The town was where the Polish cell was supposedly based out of, and the forward airbase should be where the local GRU office was situated. If you waited outside either, you could tail them.

But, there was always the possibility that the transfer occurred much earlier than planned. If that was so, they'd already be in the forest by now.

Tarin check out the base. She has the best stealth.

Janice and Nungesser can scout out the forest. The trees will give them cover while they're in flight.

We'll cover the town. Strikers wouldn't be able to sneak around, but we can do it if we're on foot.
>>
>>30556785
"Tarin, Ugly, you two keep eyes on the base. Anything happens, you holler, got it?"

"Roger." Tarin whispers.

"Rules of engagement?" Ugly asks, a bit too eagerly.

"Hold fire. We only shoot as a last resort." You warn.

"Got it."

You see the Comanche break its orbit as it flies south to rendezvous with Tarin.

"Janice, Nungesser, you two keep eyes on the forest. You'll also be acting as quick reaction in case anybody else gets in trouble.

"Acknowledged." Janice confirms.

"Bullseye, take us to the town. We're going to take a closer look."

With that, the Ghost Hawk banks as it heads north. In the distance, you can see a small cluster of glittering lights in the distance, which forms a bright green flare in your nightvision. No doubt the town. As you get closer, you can observe quite a bit of traffic moving in the streets, though from what you can tell it's either civilian traffic or the occasional Russian patrol vehicle.

"I think I got something." Rex says, "East edge of the town. I see a lot of trucks and a lot of people gathering."

You look in the direction Rex is pointing. Bullseye banks the Ghost Hawk to get a better angle, and you can see it too. A number of trucks and SUVs and a couple of sedans are idling in an empty field, with humanoid splotches milling about between them. Definitely suspicious.

"Just hold position and observe from the air." You say.

"Are you sure these are the guys?" Red asks, peeking out the window as well.

At that moment, a Russian UAZ passes by on the road. Almost immediately, all of the headlights on the vehicles switch off and the people around them drop to the ground. Nobody did that unless they had something to hide.

"Yeah, it's got to be them." You nod. "Anybody got a visual on the hostages?"

"Can't tell." Rex shakes his head.

"I'm not seeing anything either." Hoskins says.

"I just see lots of little blobs." Red adds in.

You frown. If these guys were smart, they would have either split up the hostages or hid them somewhere away from the main convoy. You suspect that they were only gathering in these numbers as a show of force to the Russians to help in negotiations.

"The convoy is moving out." Rex says. "They're moving south towards the forest.

"This is Tarin. We have a visual of a Russian convoy exiting the base, headed north." Tarin radios in at exactly the same time.

"Lex, we're going to drop you and your guys off into the the town. There's a high likelihood at leas some of the hostages are being held in there. I want you to find and extract them. Sweep the whole damn place, if you have to. Just keep it quiet."

"We can do quiet." Lex says. You can almost see his toothy grin gleaming in the darkness.

"Says the guy who has uncontrollably laughing fits." Kilroy mumbles.

There's a loud THUMP and a yelp of pain. You just shake your head and instruct Bullseye to land. He brings the Ghost Hawk down to field on the outskirts of the town, about 100 meters from the town limits.

"Go go go!" Hoskins hisses as he slides the door open. Lex and his team leap out and slink off towards the town. Hoskins then slides the door closed again and gives Bullseye the green light to take off. The Ghost Hawk then banks again, to follow the road the convoy took. Up ahead, you can see the faint glow of their headlights.

"Be advised, militant convoy is assorted civilian vehicles. About 40+ troops." You say.

"The Russian convoy is about the same number as well." Tarin says. "Assorted trucks and UAZs, and one command BMP. I'm assuming that's the GRU ride."

"Tarin, Ugly, you've got them in your sights?" You ask.

"Ever since they left the gate." Ugly confirms. "One flick of my wrist and that whole convoy is toast."

"Roger."

You all continue to watch as the convoy below you begins to snake into the forest. You switch to thermal vision to better track the vehicles. You see them continue for another mile or so down the road before veering off into the trees, no doubt taking a side road. Up ahead, you see more heat signatures as what is presumably the Russian convoy approaches.

"This Tarin. One of the trucks has broken off from the convoy." She states. "Looks like it's idling about two hundred meters from the meeting point.

"Lex, what's the status on the town sweep?"

"We've barely cleared a quarter of the town. Had to 'relieve' a couple Russians of their posts, but they shouldn't be missed for a while."

"Alright, let me know if anything happens."

You then shut off your radio and peer down. Just like Tarin said, there was a lone truck idling in a clearing not too far from the meeting point. You see two people standing around it.

"What do you think it is?" Red asks.

"No clue. Might be their bargaining chip." You shrug. "Might be a reserve force they're keeping in case something goes bad."

"But we're not going to be able to tell if we stay up here, right?"

"Right..." You nod. "Tarin, can you get eyes on the inside of that truck?"

"Negative. The space is too narrow for me to fit my strikers in safely. Plus, that close, there's a chance they might hear me." Tarin reports.

"We're going to check this thing out on foot." You say. "Red, Rex, we're roping down."

Thanks to how silently the Ghost Hawk can run, Bullseye is able to get alarming close to the parked truck. Close enough that you can actually see it without the aid of nightvision. Hoskins then slides the door open and you, Red, and Rex rope down, quickly disengaging your lines and drawing your weapons the moment you hit the ground. Bullseye then pulls the Ghost Hawk away as it orbits the area.

The three of you silently slink closer to the truck. There, you see it idling, lights off. Though your nightvision, you can see two Russian soldiers milling about at the front of the truck, apparently casually chatting. They even light up cigarettes and begin puffing away, apparently having no concern for light discipline. Then again, they were well behind the front lines, so you suspect they didn't really much care.

"I got a shot at them." Rex whispers as he raises his suppressed M4."

"Me too." Red says.

"Hold your fire. I'm going to try sneaking in." You whisper.

Both Red and Rex nod and keep their weapons trained on the two Russians as you slowly creep forward, careful not to make any sound. Though you have the advantage with the darkness and your nightvision, you were still close enough that the Russians would be able to see and hear you, at least somewhat. Fortunately, you don't attract their attention and reach the back of the truck. Peering inside, you see lots and lots of crates. You can't quite tell what they are. You see a nearby cardboard box, and you take out your knife and cut it open, revealing canned food. Cutting open another box reveals the Russian equivalent of MREs.

It was a goddamn supply truck. But why bring it along with the convoy and hide it out here? Unless...

"Captain! I've got a contact headed towards you, from the west!" Tarn hisses.

You quickly spin around, your M4 raised and ready to fire. You try to peer into the gloom of the forest, but even nightvision had its limits. You then see a third Russian soldier materialize from the bushes, pulling up his pants and tightening his belt. What a time to take a dump.

You didn't have many options.

"Shit." You breathe as you duck down into the back of the truck in an effort not to be seen.

You hear footsteps as the third Russian approaches the truck. You try to hide very still. Hopefully he'll just pass you by.

Unfortunately, the third Russian moves straight to the back of the truck and leans against the tailgate, lighting his own cigarette. His comrades yell out something to him and he yells back, eliciting some raucous laughter from the other two Russians.

You didn't have time to waste. You had to get moving. Sighing, you draw your combat knife and jam it into the third Russian's neck, causing him to gurgle and twitch, but he was already as good as dead.

"Red, Rex, take your shots." You whisper.

The muffled puffs and two loud thumps signify that their end of the job was done.

"Area secure." Rex says.

"I don't see any more contacts." Tarin confirms.

"All right." You leap out the bed of the truck. "Janice, what's the situation on the meeting?"

"They're still negotiating, apparently." Janice informs you. "I think there's at least one hostage with the convoy. I'm not too sure though."

"Lex?"

"We got half the town cleared. Nothing yet."

You sigh.

Suddenly, you hear a radio crackle, and a flurry of Russian words yelling something at the now dead soldiers.

I think the GRU would know if the guys they're working with are conscripts or regulars. We don't want to risk this unit being regulars by having Rex talk to them like a conscript, assuming his command of the language is that good anyway, which I don't think it is.

"We're going to give them what they want." You say. "This truck is our ticket in."

"Ummmm, are you sure about this?" Red frowns. "It's going to be us three against 80+ hostiles."

"And a BMP." Rex adds in.

"Thank you, Rex." Red nods. "And a BMP."

"Look, the best way we're going to do this is stealth. We just get in, grab the hostage, and get the fuck out."

"You make it sound so easy." Red rolls her eyes.

"We got the witches and the Comanche. They can make more than enough of a distraction."

"Okay..." Red says, not quite convinced.

Afterwards, it's a simple matter to shirk on some spare uniforms you found in the bed of the truck. You and Rex ride in the front, while Red hides in the back.

"Okay, we're going in. If I say the words 'Shooting Gallery', that's the cue to start wrecking shit. Copy?"

"Copy."

"Lex, what's your status?"

"We've narrowed their location down to a hotel. We're preparing to breach and clear."

"Got it. Good luck." You say.

Fortunately for you, nobody bothers to stop you as you drive the truck down the road towards the meeting point. You suddenly feel a pit in your stomach, however, when ou actually drive in. 80+ hostiles looked a lot different in person than it did on paper or from the air, and you were starting to second guess yourself.

Trying not to attract attention. you, Rex, and Red immediately disembark and stand at attention. None of the soldiers around you give you a second glance. Fortunately, most of their attention is focused on the rebels, who are well armed with a mix of scavenged Soviet and NATO weaponry.

Then you see a small gaggle of Russian officers and rebels, no doubt the leaders of the group. In tow is a very glum looking, dark haired witch. She was handcuffed, which was really more a formality than anything given the fact she was a witch, but even she wouldn't be able to escape 80 armed hostiles.

The small gaggle of VIPs made their way up to the truck, no doubt so the rebels could confirm the goods were real.

Unfortunately, one of the GRU officers seems very familiar. You wince when your realize it's goddamn Volgin. You guess after his failure to prevent Sokolov's defection, he got punted here. The irony was that he was now in a perfect position to torpedo this whole plan. He's seen your face, after all.

"Is that...?" Red whispers.

"Just stay still. Don't do a fucking thing." You whisper to Red and Rex, who don't really have any reason to protest.

Fortunately, since it's dark, and you dressed up like a bunch of conscripts, Volgin doesn't even give you a second look. At this point, you get a clearer view of "Moe", the captured witch. The officers move around to the back of the truck, and Moe is temporarily left forgotten, standing on the road.

"Hey, anybody up there. What's our best escape route?" You whisper.

"Just follow the road south. The troop concentration there is the lowest." Janice responds. "Three's also enough open ground for us to cover your retreat."

While you were tempted to try and make contact, you honestly had no idea how you would approach Moe without attracting some kind of attention. If not by the officers or Volgin, then by the dozens of soldiers around you. There seemed to be only one way to handle this.

"All units. Shooting gallery." You say.

And that's when all hell breaks loose.

Immediately, the BMP explodes into a ball of fire while gun and autocannon fire rips through both light vehicles and men. The Russians and rebels are immediately thrown into confusion, and they actually start firing on each other, thinking one side betrayed the other.

The officers, meanwhile, start shouting what you assume are obscenities at each other and begin drawing their weapons. Volgin doesn't even bother and just reaches one of his massive arms out, grabbing one of the rebel leaders by the throat and crushing it like a toothpick.

While you would have loved to get a shot in at Volgin, your priority was the prisoner. You sprint forward and spray automatic fire from your captured AK, sending the officers diving for cover. You grab Moe's hands and she hesitates for a second.

"We're here to take you home, soldier." You say loudly and clearly in English.

The witch's eyes widen in recognition and she nods, You see her familiar materialize and with a twitch of her wrists, her cuffs shatter like glass.

"Let's get the hell out of here, then." She says.

By this point, Red and Rex have cleared a path of retreat for you, cutting down Russians with both gun and sword.

"Come on! This way!" You yell to Red and Rex as you tug Moe along. "Into the forest!"

The three of you sprint into the relative safety of the forest, where both the trees and the darkness serve to shield you from detection and stray bullets. However, you don't slow your pace. Sooner or later, the Russians and rebels were going to stop fighting and realize Moe was missing.

Goddamn, that codename was starting to get annoying.

"By the way," You say the recently rescued witch. "I never caught your name..."

"Heyser. Captain Heyser." She says. "And thanks for the rescue."

"Just doing my job, ma'am."

"What about the other two? They're still in the town-"

"There's a team of Deltas over there right now taking care of that. For now though, the priority is getting YOU to safety."

"R-right." Heyser nods.

Looking behind you, you can see flashlight beams spearing through the brush. It looks like one of the sides finally managed to regroup and was pursuing you.

"Captain, you've got roughly dozen contacts about fifty meters behind you. I suggest you keep moving." Janice says. "Tarin is also reporting movement from the base. Both ground and air reinforcements are being scrambled.

"I can handle them." Ugly says eagerly. "All those shiny Flankers... it would be a shame if something happened to them."

"All right, Ugly, you get one pass and one pass only. Wreck as much shit as you can and then bug out. You got that?"

"Roger that!"

"I see two Flankers taking off. I'm going to engage them!" You hear Nungesser announce. You don't try to stop her. You did not want active Flankers in your airspace, even if you did have stealth.

You move deeper into the forest, but your pursuers keep up their pace. The problem was Heyser was continually lagging behind, no doubt due to injuries related to her capture. You also suspect she hasn't exactly been getting a fully healthy diet, considering the rebel's need to barter with the Russians fore basic supplies.

Sporadic support fire from the Ghost Hawk and Janice and Tarin slows them down, but not nearly enough.

"We can't keep escaping and evading through the forest, people. We need a plan." You say.

"We can try winching you guys up. There's no room for us to land." Bullseye says.

"We can come down and pull up to three of you out of the forest." Janice suggests.

Huh, that was a good question.

"You're up second, Cap. You're the CO." Red says.

There's not much time for debate, as you can feel the rotor wash of the Ghost Hawk coming from above. You look up to see the winch slowly lowering down and you grab it and quickly hook Heyser up to it.

"Go!" You yell to Hoskins and he engages the winch, pulling Heyser up to the Ghost Hawk.

Meanwhile, Red and Rex are busy pumping automatic fire into your pursuers, with Janice and Tarin doing what they can from above. Your pursuers begin returning fire as well, but it's sporadic and inaccurate.

"All right! Heyser's in!" Hoskins yells.

You then grab the winch and hook yourself up. You feel the winch pulling at your weight. It only takes a few seconds, but it feels like an eternity as gunfire chatters throughout the forest below you. You note that the pursuers' gunfire was getting much heavier and more accurate.

"Red! Rex! We got no choice! Both of you hook on together!" You yell. "The winch should be able to handle the weight!"

"B-but-"

"Just do it, Red!"

With that, you feel a tug at the winch cable as your two squadmates are pulled up. However, suddenly, the entire craft is jerked to the side, as if something extremely heavy was trying to pull it down. You can then hear Red screaming and cursing.

"Red, RED! What's going on!" You yell.

"It's that Volgin asshole! He's grabbed my leg!" Red screams.

You poke your head out and see Volgin with a sold grip on Red's leg. She tries o kick at him with her leg be grabs it as well. At the same time, Volgin's men get close enough to realize there's a helo in the air and start firing at the Ghost Hawk's general location.

"Shit!" Bullseye curses as he hits the throttle, gaining altitude.

"I can't get him off!" Red yells in a panicked tone.

"Rex! Can you assist!?" You yell.

"Trying to." Rex grunts.

"He's going for my buckle-!"

Suddenly, the entire helo jolts again. You then hear Rex grunting again.

"Red? Rex! What's going on!?"

"Got Red's arm. Keeping her from falling." Rex says, the strain obvious in his voice.

You poke your head out of the door and see that indeed, it seemed Volgin undid Red's buckle in an attempt to knock her off, and Rex was the only thing keeping her in the air. Red was still struggling with Volgin in their aerial arena.

"Janice! Tarin! Do either of you have a shot!?" You yell.

"Negative." Tarin says. "Red's in my line fire."

You don't have a choice. Leaning out the door, your raise your rifle and take aim. Thankfully, Volgin doesn't have nightvision gear so he can't see what you're up to. Probably doesn't think you're crazy enough to try.

Oh how wrong he was.

You fire one three round burst. You hear Volgin grunt in pain and he lets go of Red, falling back down to earth through the trees. You want to say the fall would kill him, but you never knew with Russians like him.

"Heh, that was close on, right Red?" You grin.

"YOU FUCKING SHOT ME, CAP!" Red howls. "Through my damn foot!"

"Well, at least you're alive enough to complain about it." You grumble. Why didn't you just use your shield?"

"Because if I did it might've stopped your shots before they could hit Volgin." Red points out.

"Ah..."

"Goddamnit now I have to get a new boot!" Red grunts Once she's properly winched up, she punches you in the shoulder. Hard.

"Ow!"

"It's what you deserve!"

"Hey! Guys! This is Lex! We managed to get Larry and Curly secured. We uh, just need some extraction!"

"Define 'some extraction'.'" You say, dreading the answer.

"We kinda in uh, what you might term a 'vehicluar chase.' Look for the truck that's driving like a drunk baboon's behind the wheel."

"Roger that." You sigh. "You can fix that foot up, right Red?"

"Well duh, no thanks to you." Red grunts.

"I'll make it up to you. I promise." You sigh.

Now that you're in the air, you can get a better picture of what had been going on. To the south, you see fires roaring in the distance. You see the Comanche returning, it's wingpods noticeably empty.

"Ugly, are you SURE you did just one pass?" You sigh.

"Counting is hard, Captain." Ugly replies.

Well, at least the base wasn't going to be an issue.

Up ahead, you can see the truck Lex and his Deltas had commandeered, and sure enough, it was being chased by a gaggle of civilian vehicles, some pretty clearly modified for military use. There's no gunfire though, no doubt since the rebels didn't want to risk killing their bargaining chips. You also see a Hind closing in on the chase, until you see Nungesser swoop down and spear it with her massive lance. She then pulls her weapon out, sending the Hind spinning out of control. Bullseye is just agape.

"Was that-"

"Yes."

"Did she just-"

"Yes."

"With a-"

"YES."

"That's four more kills today!" Nungesser says happily. "These stealth strikers really are something!"

"Good, now can we please do something about saving Lex's stupid ass?" You sigh.

The Comanche unloads the last of its ordnance on Lex's pursuers while the witches contribute their own firepower, causing the pursuing vehicles to swerve off the road, break off the pursuit, or explode spectacularly. With the immediate threat gone, Bullseye lands the Ghost Hawk just long enough for Lex and his charges to board.

"Well that was a fun one!" Lex laughs. "Everyone accounted for?"

"Yes." You nod, slumping in your seat. It was over. It was finally over.

At this point, the whole task force was already headed west at full speed, eager to get back into friendly airspace. Scanning the area round you, you don't see any signs of pursuit. Looked like it was the right call for Ugly to get rid of those Flankers.

Well, it you were just glad this mission was finished. You're now left thinking about what other crazy scheme Anderson was going to send you off on next. After all, succeeding at this one was just going to encourage him further.

"Again, thanks a lot for coming to save us." Heyser thanks you. "Heard some nasty things about how Russia handles its people, much less its witches."

"Like I said before. I'm just doing my job." You sigh.

You also wonder how you're going to make it up to Red for shooting her in the foot. You figure you should get started on that soon, or else Red might get her own ideas about compensation.
