>Nobody suspects a thing
You come to your senses a few minutes later. There is a terrible pain in your side, much worse than what you've been experiencing until now. You are lying in a patch of tall grass, near something that seems to be making a lot of noise. You feel your left side. It hurts to touch, and when you pull your hand away, there is a bit of blood. You strain yourself to look down at the wound. A small but painful burn. The shell just grazed you, but the chance of infection is still there. You get to your knees and start trying to stand, when another ball of flame flies past your head and into the distance. You duck down, and hear a voice.

"I said get away!" It is a familiar and yet not quite correct voice. It is scratchy and weak.

You crouch down and try to close in. There is another shot, this one far to your left, tearing through the grass and burning it black along the way. After this, there are only desperate metallic clicks, one after another, until you reach your target. A man, coated in mud and trying to crawl away lies before you. There is a pistol in one hand. He shouts at you to leave him be, but does not have the speed or strength to escape under his own power.

You catch up to him and flip him over. As you suspected, before you is Riley. He thrashes madly against your grip, trying to beat you away with the butt of his pistol and wiggle out of our grasp at the same time. His eyes seem to be sealed shut by some sort of black sludge.

After a minute, you give up on him calming down and begin speaking to him. It's unclear if your words get through, but at least he seems to lose the will to fight. After a while, he ceases and seems to understand his situation.

"Shit. I'm sorry. I don't know what's gotten into me. My eyes just burn like a son of a bitch, I don't know what this stuff is. I can't see, I think my leg might be fucked, I don't know what to do."

"After you didn't jump onto one of the lifeboats, Donna came to look for you. I tried to keep that thing distracted while she collected you, but obviously it didn't work. When I saw it grab one of you, I hit the front gun and started firing. In retrospect, I'm not sure what I expected to happen. Then everything gets kinda blurry. The ship snapped in half, I got thrown into the water, and the next thing I knew I was laying on some sand and blind."

Riley seems somewhat solemn. At any rate, neither of you are very useful right now. You have too many injuries and not enough stamina between you. You won't be able to move down the cliff again until Riley is better.

You bring Riley with you as you search for something to serve as a splint. You eventually settle on some sturdy bark and a ripped piece of Riley's own pants. It's not great, but it'll work. Now, Riley is able to walk a bit faster, but still relies on your support.

You prop Riley against a tree while you gather up materials to build a shelter. Here it is much easier to find materials, as the forest offers a large variety of branches for support, and you are able to pile leaves on top of those for warmth. By nightfall, you and Riley have a sturdy lean-to that, with the both of you inside, offers decent warmth. However, you are both still very hungry, and Riley has so far not managed to scrape the black sludge from his eyes.

You leave Riley in the shelter and leave to find something to eat. You recall the fish down below, as well as your likely dry coat and boots. There is also likely a number of nocturnal creatures to find in the woods, and hopefully some sleeping prey that you might flush out. All you have to hunt with is your rifle, but it's possible you might sharpen a spear from one of your spare branches.

A) Head down the cliff

With some effort you construct a viable spear. It's pure wood, so it won't pierce anything with a tough hide, but it's better then nothing. That done, you climb down the cliff and gather your things. With your spear, you could try catching a few larger fish, or you could play it safe and get a few smaller ones.

All your knowledge about spear fishing, I.E. none, affords you little but a broken spear and two hours wasted time. At this point, you need to save all the energy you have left for the rough climb ahead, and are forced to return to Riley empty handed. That night is warm but your stomachs make it difficult to sleep.

The next day you start tired, and now very thirsty. After some talk, you and Riley realize that there may be bugs and weeds around your camp that are edible. On top of this, Riley would be able to collect them even when blind, albeit slowly. This means you might spend the day searching for water.

You leave Riley to scrape together what he can and go to find water. You bring your coat and rifle, just to be safe.

After some time searching, making sure to carefully leave a trail of broken branches to find your way back, you think you hear a waterfall. Usually that means clean water, and the prospect of such excites you. You follow the sound for a few minutes and eventually do come to a narrow creek. The source seems to be clean.

You resist temptation and begin following the creek to its source. The gentle sound of its flow is relaxing, and helps to take your mind off the pain of your still mending wounds.

You reach the source, a small lagoon at the base of a large waterfall. The water in the lagoon is crystal clear and cool, without a single fish or bug. It seems odd that such a pool would exist in nature, but you can't find any flaws with the water itself. At the back, near the rock wall of the fall is a large stone that rises out of the water like a pillar. Atop it you see something even more odd, a small hand-basket. There appears to be something in it, but you can't tell from this distance. There are also some stone that you might be able to jump across to reach it, but they are slippery and may not be safe.

You remove your boots for better footing and begin crossing the stones. The first two are easy, but from then on they get smaller and harder to balance on. You draw the rifle from your leg holster. It's still got a bit of water damage, but you only have three rounds anyway. You keep it handy as you proceed, but it has a serious negative effect on your ability to balance. On the tenth stone, just a few more from the pillar rock, you slip, and fall into the lagoon. The water is chilly, but otherwise feels normal. You float to the top and take a breath. It's hard to swim in your coat, but you make it back to the nearest stone and climb on. As you catch your breath, you hear more splashing from behind the rock. You look up but again see nothing. You're almost certain there's something hiding.

You ask if anyone is there and can hear you. The only thing resembling a response is the swishing of water, but wether from the falls or some intelligent source is not clear. You shrug and continue to the pillar rock.

When you reach it, you begin climbing to the top. There is an oddly shaped place at the top that it perfect to serve as a chair. And just as you thought, there is a small basket and inside are several red fruit about the size of your fist. They smell sweet. You peer over the side of the rock, but still see nothing.

You swim around the side of the rock, trying to find what has been making noise since you arrived. As you round the side, you spot something move around the opposite face of the rock. You follow it, pressing it up against the stepping stones. There is nowhere for it to hide, and you finally catch up. Before you is a young woman, stark nude with her back pressed against the rock. You make it to land and drag yourself out of the lagoon. When you release her, she merely sits on the grassy edge and looks up at you through long, sopping, red hair. You help him into the water, holding onto his arm until he gets the hang of floating. Pearl swims up behind him and places her hands on his shoulders. He shudders a little, but calms down as she speaks.

"You've got it pretty bad. Don't worry though, I'll get you sorted out. Now when I count to three, take a deep breath, okay?" Riley expresses his confusion but Pearl begins counting anyway. You call Pearl back to you, hoping to remedy the situation. She about faces and skips back to see what the hold up is. You explain that Riley is uncomfortable seeing her bare body, which she doesn't seem to fully grasp, but she does agree to cover up for the time being. You remove your coat and shirt, then pass the latter to her. She slips it on over her head and runs her arms through the sleeves. It doesn't fit well, as a large amount of her neck is exposed, and it only reaches to a few inches above her knees. Still, Riley seems to relax a bit more. Once Pearl pulls her hair out of the neck, she asks if you're both ready to move on.

"Or do I need to wear big ugly foot covers like you?" You roll your eyes as you redon your coat, now exposing your bare torso. You begin walking again.

"I have to live here. At least I assume. Mother never actually told me not to leave, she just dropped me in the lagoon when I was a baby and then left. The lagoon is magic, of course, but I don't know if it always was or I made it that way. Oh, I'm an undine by the way. A spirit of water. It's not that important, I'm only a little immortal and my magic isn't exactly cosmic. Let's see, if I had to guess I'd say that the island is a bit smaller than the rest of the world. At least a little. Oh, and I can't count at all, so that won't be an issue. Although when I was born, I don't remember there being nearly as many stars at night. It must have doubled since then." All this information comes a bit fast for you and Riley, but you think you've got your head around it. You then ask about her curiosity in regards to the rest of the world.

"I've never really thought about it. Before you came, I never even left the lagoon. I suppose it might be interesting to see more places. Will they have very nice lagoons in other parts of the world?"

You decide it's best to conserve your strength for now, and the three of you begin setting up a small camp. With Riley at full capacity, you are able to make three soft beds from moss and leaves, as well as a warm fire all before dark sets in properly. The three of you sit around the fire, eating mermaid eggs before laying down to rest. Riley tries to roast one, but finds that the heat only cooks the flavor out, and gives up.

As night sets in, you find yourselves growing just slightly drowsy due to the fire and dark. Riley suggests making a watch, and without any discussion Pearl goes right to sleep. This leaves you and Riley alone to decide that you'll be the first to keep a look out, then him. Before Riley goes to sleep, however, you ask to have a few words with him. He thinks it odd but does not decline.

"I can see clear as ever. I think that gunk was from the thing we fought on the ship, but like I said I don't remember much after it sank us so your guess is as good as mine. My guns? Empty. I was shooting before we sank, but I don't think the shells did jack shit to the fucking thing. I had five shots left, and I've used them all since I woke up here. I looked at them though, and the rotater might jam if I try to fire them too much, but they should still fire and I can always rotate the cylinder by hand if worse comes to worse. And once we get them cleaned they should work fine." You recall you still have three shells yourself. They should fit Riley's pistols, and they'd be more accurate with him. You then remember to thank him for helping you on the ship.

"Don't mention it. I really didn't do much. I wanted to gut that thing and eat it's fucking heart, but that's life. Can I be honest with you though? I'm sort of worried about Donna. If she's not on this island, she could be anywhere. And if she is, there's no way to know if we'll run into her."

Riley doesn't seem satisfied with the answer, but it's all you have. With that, Riley lays back on his moss bed and folds his hands beneath his head before shutting his eyes. You take a stick and use it to play with the wood in the fire, in order to pass time. The night goes by quietly, disturbed only by your companions turning in their sleep. You learn that night that Riley is a bit of a thrasher. The previous night you spent together, you both slept at the same time, meaning you didn't get a chance to see. Though this does explain the extra bruises you thought you had this morning. Pearl doesn't move about as much, but she does seem to have difficulty adjusting to sleeping on something other than her rock, as a few times she repositions in her sleep every few minutes. There is one instance where you must actively look away so as not to be rude.

The next morning Pearl awakes you by stepping on your stomach and driving the wind out of you. It doesn't hurt so much as it shocks you out of a peaceful slumber. You look over and see Riley rolling up their beds.

"Well I tried yelling at you, but you just knocked me away. You sleep like an old grandpa boar, you know? And you're hairy like one too. Now get up, Riley says we're burning daylight, and I rather like the sun just the size it is."

You get to your feet and slide the rifle back into the holster on your thigh before rolling up your bed and starting off across the island again. You walk and chat with the others for a few hours until you notice the treeline thinning a bit. This must mean you're drawing nearer to the other side. You do indeed reach some cliffs just around sundown. The sky is beginning to burn orange, as you peer down onto the shore below. The same sand that you found when you landed here. Pearl seems eager to leap down, and whether she could survive the fifty foot drop or not, you and Riley hold her back. She is disappointed by this. She then tells you that what you're looking for should be at the bottom of these cliffs.

You make plans to descend the cliffside together. You think it might be tough, since you aren't sure of Pearl's athleticism, but before you can fully work out the logistics, she's already on the way down. You and Riley race to catch up, and together the three of you make it to the bottom. Contrary to her attitude a minute ago, Pearl seems exhausted, and asks to lay down for a moment. You agree and begin looking around. The beach here looks exactly like the one you first woke on. Even the same type of fish swim in the shallow water. You ask Pearl for more details.

"I don't know. I just thought there might be something here. I've never been before, you know? For all I knew there was a whole city here. Guess there isn't though."

You keep your cool. It's not as though you were doing anything important before this, and she did heal you in the first place. You scratch your head and try to think of what to do next.

"Hey! I think there was someone here before! Look, they carved some sort of weird idols on the beach!" Riley calls from a distance away, waving his arms. You leave Pearl to see what he's talking about. Indeed, he has found some strange looking statues half buried in the sand. Most of them are corroded or shatter, but two of them seem to have held up well. The first depicts something like a shark, with a fin jutting from the head, and sharp teeth carved into it. The other looks more like a bird of prey. It clearly has stumpy wings and a sharp beak. Riley comments on them being rather streamlined for ancient carvings, which you agree were often more square for ease of the craftsmen. If nothing else, this is a sign that someone might have been here, and possibly built ships. There is slight hope.

You decide to hold off until you've had a good night's sleep before you begin searching the area. Pearl volunteers to take the first watch, likely assuming it to be more fun going first than last. You and Riley agree, and after a dinner of fruit and fish, you both doze off.

You are awakened by a strange noise whizzing by your ears. It is loud enough to startle you out of a pleasant dream, and you rise to your knees quickly. It is still dark out, and the fire is dim. You grab the rifle from your bedside and aim it out toward the dark. In the distance, a blue light moves at an astounding speed, first moving away, and then turning and approaching. It is moving straight toward you, and you can hear a low roaring emitting from it.

You lower the rifle and watch silently as the light approaches. It draws near at incredible speed, and soon comes close enough to begin to make out. It seems to be set at the head of some sort of fish. Before you can think about this prospect, you realize that you can hear Pearl.

The object reveals itself to be the stone shark idol from earlier that day. There is a blue light embedded in its forehead, and it speeds toward you with Pearl mounted on its back. Pearl runs aground nearby, giggling and clapping. You stow the rifle and approach her.

The idol emits a low hum, and even seems to vibrate slightly when you place a hand on it. Pearl looks at you with a wide and frankly disarming smile.

"I dunno, I don't even know how I'm riding it. I crashed into the ocean like eight times. Did you know ocean water was so bad tasting? Makes me wonder why you'd ever try to leave your lagoons."

During Pearl's rant, you look back and notice Riley is still sound asleep. That he can sleep so soundly through the noise is a testament to his obliviousness. You manage to talk Pearl down from the idol and climb on yourself. After a little bit of testing, you determine a rough idea of the controls. There are several holes behind the statue's fin, which are just right for your fingers. When you lay on your belly and tuck your legs in, you find a comfortable position from which to ride the idol. The finger holes serve as steering, while the two thumb holes seem to be forward thrust. You practice on the water for a while, and get the hang of it. All in all, it takes about three hours to get everything down.

Pearl sits on the beach, trying her hardest not to nod off. She hasn't slept since last night, it seems. You yourself don't exactly feel refreshed.
