Holding on to Tia's back like some sort of oversized koala (an image that you can't shake off your mind), the two of you climb the Tianna castle walls. The sight of the city at night is quite impressive, but the distant sight, outside in the darkness, of the barbarian camp's bonfire, reminds you of your current situation.

You can only hope that Amata has been handling the Lunars alright, and that the Lintha don't have a plan B for wrecking everyone's day.

Tia hoists herself up on the top of the wall, and you drop down inside the courtyard. She quickly follows. No one seems to have noticed you.

"...Why are we sneaking around anyway?" She asks, looking at you puzzled, while grasping your hand once more, and giving it a squeeze just to check if you're still real. "I thought you were friends with these people."

"...I am." You point out. "I just want to spend a moment in the bath, and don't really want people to see us like this."

"Like what?"

"Soaked in dirt and dust and demon blood?"

"Oh." She seems to realize only now that her white dress is now quite a bit less than white. She squeezes your hand. "We're taking a bath together:" She concludes, nodding sagely to herself.

...You can't really argue with that now, can you? You drag her around the corridors of the castle, thankfully empty - people are mostly guarding the exits or present at and around the conference. They should have already started the dinner by now, so you can imagine nearly all of the maids, Milliam included, to be currently busy there.

You make way to the large indoor baths of the castle, a half-underground chamber filled with stair steps leading into warm water. You're not sure if it's heated by something, or it draws from a thermal spring - not unlikely, considering that you know Tianna to have an active volcano.

You immerse yourself in water, and Tia, unwilling to let go of your hand, lets herself be dragged down with you.

As both of your clothes soak in water, the grime and dust sticking to them comes loose. The maids might get mad at you dirtying the baths, but it's an emergency (of a sort): you'll deal with the fallout later.

You have to actually scrub it off Tia's clothes and hair and skin, however: she seems just content to sit in your lap doing nothing, and even just getting her to let go of your hand takes a bit of silent persuasion and a couple of forceful tugs.

It almost feels a bit like taking care of a little child. Or maybe she's too emotional right now to care about the meeting. Or maybe she just wants to act spoiled.

You gently dunk her head under water to get rid of the clots of blood in her hair, trying not to laugh at how ridiculous the situation has become.

When she emerges, you notice a large set of gills around her neck, starting below the ear and going all the way down to the shoulder. They weren't there before, and they quickly disappear under your eyes once she's out of the water.

While you're a still a bit off-guard after seeing this, she turns around and stares into your eyes.
Innocently, she asks you: "How many lovers do you have, Maka?"

>Who are we?
Maka, an exiled noble recently Exalted as a Zenith-caste Solar. She's in the western city of Tianna as a guest of queen Amata (DB), an old friend. Abyssals are targeting the city for conquest, Lintha pirates have infiltrated it with spies and agents, and half the island is controlled by paranoid lunars. Fun times.
Said lunars are in Tianna for some diplomacy. The Lintha tried to sabotage the talks, you and a lunar called Tia defeated them. And turns out that Tia is crazy obsessed with you for some reason.

>Solar? Zenith? I don't know Exalted...
This quest is as newbie-friendly as possible, and I want it to work as a newbie's intro to Exalted. If you have ANY question, ask in thread. For the setting, google "1d4chan exalted".

>Archive?
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=zenith

>System?
Dicepool-like system. When performing an action, everyone rolls 1d10 when posting. the first X rolls are considered, where X is equal to attribute + ability. Yes, this means that the more people are posting, the stronger Maka is, up to a limit of her attribute + ability.

>XP?
Attributes cost [current score x5] xp. Abilities cost [current score x3] xp, except Zenith costing [(current score x3) -1]. Charms cost 10 xp, except for Zenith-based charms (related to charisma and physical/mental fortitude) which cost 8 xp. At the end of every "session" (thread) you will be presented with a list of possible acquisitions.

You have 10 XP. Pick how to spend:

Mental 3 (10 xp)
Dawn 3 (6 XP)
Twilight 3 (6 XP)
Night 3 (6 XP)
Eclipse 3 (6 XP)

Or one of the following charms for 10 XP (8 XP for the Zenith charms:

[dawn]
Fists of Iron (1 Ess, Scene. +1 damage once per combat, per enemy)
Heaven Thunder Hammer (Permanent, succesful hits have knockback effect)

[zenith]
Iron Kettle Body (1 Ess, Scene. -1 damage suffered from all sources. stacks with Iron Skin)
Ox-Body Technique (permanent, +1 HP)
Husband-Seducing Demon Dance (1 Ess. A performance you give causes anyone seeing it to instantly gain a positive feeling for you (love, respect, starry-eyed admiration, etc))
Respect-Commanding Attitude (1 Ess, Scene. Interrupts everyone and anything going on, in order to deliver a statement that will be heard)

[twilight]
Judge's Ear Technique (1 Ess, Scene. Can tell when a person lies knowingly)
Courtier's Eye Technique (1 Ess, Can tell someone's backgrounds)

[night]
Graceful Crane Stance (permanent, gives you supernatural balance and lightness of step)
Lightning Speed (permanent, vastly improves your running speed)

[eclipse]
Sagacious Reading of Intent (1 Ess, extra info gained reading letters and written documents)
Mastery of Small Manners (1 Ess, you learn the short-term objectives of people in the scene. Gives straightforward ideas, but does not reveal complex plans)

>How do you pick what Charms we have available for learning?
1) something that is at least vaguely related to something you did or studied. So for example no "commanding soldiers" charm charms unless you actually tried it at some point in the past.
2) your array of choices is equal to your score in that skill.
3) i might change them around from thread to thread, rotating them to give you more choice

You're a bit worried she might get jealous, or crazy (especially considering how forceful she was just a moment ago, with her "you belong to me" speech), but you decide it's best to be truthful.

"...Two." You tell her.

"...Oh?" She frowns. She's clearly not liking it.

"Amata and Irene." You add. "The, the queen and her daughter." She might not know their names. She probably doesn't.

She stands back up from your lap, soaked in water, dripping it everywhere, and turns to face you.

"What." She hisses. "Two lovers. You have two lovers."

You eye her daiklave. She left it out of the water, near the entrance to the baths. A few meters away. "Yes." You admit.

"ONLY two." She crosses her arms and shakes her head disdainfully.

"...Beg your pardon?" You can't help but ask.

"You need more." She begins to pace back and forth slowly, as if sadly pondering on your inadequacy. "It's shameful."

"...Shameful?" You repeat, sinking deeper in the water. You're trying to wrap your mind around her thought processes.

"People will look at you and point and laugh. Look at her. An Exalted and a queen, and she only has two lovers. And they will laugh at me too." She explains. "I will lose face."

"...So it's a matter of status for you?" You wonder if that's how Exalted in general work, if it's a Lunar thing, or if it's just all in Tia's head, but you relax. At least seems she isn't going to be jealous.

"Not just that. Also, more people who follow you and are tied to you, more allies, make you stronger." You admit that that makes somewhat sense. "Also training."
>>
>>30606524
"Training?"

"You need to train your body to satisfy me properly." She states haughtily. "I expect nothing less. And I will train for your sake. I will also inspect your lovers."

"...Inspect them?" The conversation is going too weird too fast. You can barely keep up.

"Check if they are good enough." She smiles. "I won't be too strict. You can use your body with who you want. And you are Exalted. Center of crossroads. Your heart must have many ties."

Her pupils widen as her eyes stare deeply into yours. "But your soul belongs to me. And mine to yours."

"...I'm not sure how to respond to that." You voice your doubts.

She keeps looking back at you.

"...I mean, you're basically forcing yourself on me."

She keeps staring.

"...I don't even know you."

"You will." She smiles, walking out of the bath. Once on dry land, she shakes the water off her, spraying it everywhere.

You REALLY hope the maids will forgive you for this mess. You walk out of the water and dry yourself a bit with a towel. Fortunately your dress isn't affected much by being wet.

As soon as you're done, she immediately comes back to latch on you, grasping your hand.

And, it turns out, being creeped out as fuck and wanting nothing more to do with her is an even more valid response to this shit. You move silently through the corridors, and find a small closet where to discreetly wait. It lies on the corridor leading to the dinner room. You can hear some noise, talking and the clinking noise of plates and knives. Seems like the reception os giong pretty well. the barbarians seem to be pretty noisy, but you can't hear the distinctive, low, growling voice of Talon. He's apparently not as loud as his mortal retainers.

You let Tia hold your hand. To tell the truth, you ARE a bit worried by how she would react if you tried to forcefully distance you from her.

She seems to have calmed down. She's following you along, silent and docile.

"Are we waiting?" She whispers after a few seconds.

"...Yes. It'd be awkward if we walked in there while everyone's eating. Let's be a bit cautious."

"Okay." She replies. And waits.

The small room you're in has brooms and buckets and other stereotypical cleaning implements. There are spare clothes for the servants and household items. You're sitting on a pile of rolled-up carpets. It's dark and dusty. All little details you notice while you're trying to escape the awkward silence between you and her.

"We're not eating?" She asks.

"...We'll eat something later."

"Okay."

Some more time passes. You hear plates being piled and carried away. Dinner must be almost over, but cleanup is probably going to take a while more.

I disagree. Our current soak charm is borderline worthless because it drains one point of essence per attack. We're in desperate need of a scene-long just in case we run into something slightly tougher than a first circle demon in the future.

By comparison, learning someone's short-term straightforward objectives isn't especially relevant for discussions involving long-term plans and complex politics.

I'm not saying we shouldn't start progressing that direction eventually, mind you. In fact, once we have a scene-long Soak charm, I think our highest priority should be Zenith and Eclipse social charms. I just want us to get that soak charm out of the way so we can not worry about improving combat for quite a while.
>>
>>30607844
I agree. We also just picked up a body guard, so I think we can postpone a decent soak charm for a few threads.

Charm == Power? Not an item like artefact or something? Am I getting it right?

t. n00b
>>
>>30607902
Yeah, charms are powers. They're basically something half-way between a spell and a feat, to use D&D terms. Supernatural techniques which you can learn and then spend essence on to use.

'Charm' is the default term of Exalted, while this quest uses the more generic 'power.' Since it seems like a majority of the players of this quest are at least passingly knowledgeable about Exalted, it seems they tend towards habit and just say 'charm.'

Does that help?

"..:Say, Tia?" The turns to face you. If she has a tail, you're sure she would be waggling it. "...What can you tell me about your friends?"

"You mean Talon and Zaan?" She asks.

You nod. You're interested in learning as much as possible.

"Talon is cool." She starts. "He's harsh, and strict, and stern. He makes rules and decisions, but when he makes rules for everyone, he follows them too. He leads by example. He is fair."

After hearing her talk a bit, you begin to suspect that Seatongue might not be her strong point. She doesn't have a noticeable accent, but she keeps making short pauses, like she's stopping to think, or translating in her mind. Or maybe, that's just her manner of speaking.

"So he's your leader?" You ask her.

"Maybe." She doesn't seem to have put that much thought into it. "We don't have to do what he says. We choose to."

"What about Zaan?" The image of the androgynous boy biting a rock in half like it's a ripe apple is stuck in your head.

"Zaan is a wise and powerful sorceror."

"...We're talking about the same Zaan, right?" You make sure.

She seems confused. "Short. Red tattoos. White skin. Pointy teeth." Yep, it's him alright.

"What about you?" You ask her, trying to shake the image from your head.

"I am a warrior. Luna has made me her champion in Creation. I have sworn to protect it."

"...Luna, huh. You know, the Unconquered Sun appeared to me." You confide to her. "When I Exalted."

"He does, to Zeniths."

(cont)
>>
"Zeniths?" You feel like you should know what that means.

"All Exalted are divided by caste. Castes have different roles." She gently pokes your forehead. "Shining sun is Dawn. Dawn are generals. Full sun is Zenith. Zenith are priests. Setting sun is Twilight. Twilights are scholars. Empty sun is Night. Nights are spies. Twin sun is Eclipse. Eclipses are diplomats."

"So you're a Dawn?"

"Those are solar castes. We Lunars have others." And her castemark briefly flashes back to life, a full circle of silver light in the middle of her forehead. Identical to your own except in color. "I am a Full Moon, a warrior. Talon is a Changing Moon, a trickster. Zaan is a No Moon, a shaman."

"That different, huh." You ponder. "So when you sprouted those gills..."

"We lunars are shapeshifters." She explain. "We can hunt animals. Eat their hearts, wear their skins. We also learn other tricks." She replies, vaguely.

Neither of us knows very much about each other, and we each have our differences and priorities. Tia seems... nice? But for all we know, we're about to come into political conflict between the city of Tianna and the northern tribes.

While the others guys say that this means that Tia will make her own choices, if she really does have Bond 5, that means she will be compelled by a supernatural compulsion to stay, rendering the 'choice' merely a way to easy our guilt.

Still, can't hurt to try.

Solar Bond 5 doesn't do quite that. It means she's very inclined to act in what she sees as our best interest, gains bonuses when she does so, and penalties when she tries to act against what she sees as our best interests. For example, on the issue of her testing our lovers? We would make exactly zero headway arguing against that if she sees that as the best thing for us.

It's honestly an extremely powerful tool for non-submissive Lunars.

No, it doesn't. It only means that when she ALREADY agrees with us. If we order her to leave us alone, but she thinks that would put us in danger, she would gain (in 2e) a +5 to her MDV for the purposes of ignoring us outright.

A Lunar who disagrees with their Solar Mate about what is best for said Mate is extremely well-equipped to ignore them.

That's how the fluff works too. They get to use their own judgement when it comes to deciding what is and isn't in favor of their Solar, not their Mate's judgement in the matter.

"...I want you to decide on your own. Although I'd like to get to know you better." You smile. "But you should act on your own desires, your own wishes. Make up your own mind."

"Done." She replies instantly. That didn't take long.

You hear a subtle knock on the closet's door, followed by Milliam's voice. "...Are you there, Maka? Was that your voice?"

You open the door by an inch.

"Dinner's done." She informs you. She's carrying a large pile of plates, in fact. "Amata was worried about you, but I had heard from some maids who had seen you sneaking around, so I told her you were alright. I think at least Talon wants to wait for you before getting to the serious talks."

"Let's go then." Tia stands up. "We have to go and see the others."

You wonder why she suddenly cares about them. It's like she suddenly had an idea, or realized something. This does worry you a bit, but you move along with her.

After leaving the dirty plates to another maid, Milliam she escorts you to the dinner room, a large room, warm with braziers and carpets and tapestries and long silk curtains, giving it a cozy yet sophisticated atmosphere.

The table has been cleared, and the guests have split in small groups. With the servants gone, the conversation seems to have taken an informal tone. Some of the barbarians have made a circle of chairs and are loudly discussing something together with-

...that guy from the alley? With the black scarf and the throwing knives? He's here, apparently.
>>
Samiel and few other men in rich clothes, clearly from Tianna, but whose appearances and faces are new to you, are talking more quietly around a corner of the table with the other few barbarians, and Zaan.

The third group is just Amata and Talon, on the opposite side of the table, in front of two pewter cups and a bottle of wine, half-full. Both of their gazes are immediately attracted to you, and after a few seconds the room grows a little bit quieter as others begin to notice your appearance.

"Tia! Where have you been?!" Zaan stands up from his chairs and calls out to her, waving an arm. "We thought you got lost!"

Amata smiles at you and gracefully nods, as does Talon. She seems to be handling herself fairly okay, but she's clearly relieved to see you're alright.

"Yeah." You explain. "A bit of trouble with some Lintha." You flash a smile at the huge Lunar. "Nothing serious."

"They're pests." He nods.

"I and Talon had just finished discussing a few ideas on Tianna."

"Yes?" you wonder. Tia sits down next to you. She and Talon exchange a slow nod, acknowledging each other.

"Talon here had just finished explaining me that his people have had some problems with the Lintha too. Their raid the tribes living near the shore for slaves, among other things."

"It is one of our problems. The other is the Raksha of the swampland." He spits the word, tapping his heart with a claw five times like in some sort of little superstitious ritual.

"...Raksha?" You reply, unfamiliar with the term.

"The Fair Folk." He explains, gritting his teeth in disgust, shifting his cigar from one side of the mouth to the other. He stares at you, as if expecting you to repeat his gesture. You do so, feeling perhaps a bit silly, and he nods approvingly. "Their hobgoblins and wyld-spawned monsters plague vast areas of the northern side of the island."

Amata nods. "Some of them have threatened Tianna's outskirts and villages in the past." She admits.

"I've made my mission to keep them out of Creation." He explains. "If we can worry each about our own troubles, without being scared and driven paranoid by each other's presence, we can focus on our enemies and you can focus on your own. We have no desire to harm Tianna." He turns to Tia. "...Wnd what about you? What were you doing? Why did you disappear with Maka for so long?"

I'm sure the northerners would have some use for our finished goods, and we would certainly be interested in their support against the Lintha and Abyssals - and likely they ours against the fair folk. Her exaltation married our exaltation. Her exaltation is part of her, ours is part of us. We are, by admittedly flawed logic, married to her. >>
"...What?" You take one step back, taken completely by surprise by her statement.

Talon takes a deep sigh and massages his eyes, with the look of someone who is used to dealing with this sort of stuff, or at least expected to. "Oh boy."

Tia turns to you, apparently confused by your lack of approval. "...Do you prefer to be the husband? We can arrange it."

"That's- That's not the issue-" You stop as you notice Amata. She has a huge grin plastered all over her face, clearly desperately trying not to laugh. You desperately shift your gaze to Talon, hoping to find a lifebuoy somewhere.

"...So you're the one she was so crazy about." He states. "I was hoping she'd never find... oh, well, it looks like you're it." He pats you. "Congratulations."

"...Can you, at least, explain some of this? Does she make any sense to you?" You wonder.

"You're her Solar Mate." He explains, explaining precisely nothing.

"...And?" You prod him verbally.

"...Every Lunar has a connection to a specific Solar. Our gods decided it. Don't ask me way. I'm sure they had reasons. And no, we're not all as crazy as she is about it." He immediately adds. "But... it's an absolute tie, sculpted in our souls. It can't be changed, and it's hard to ignore. But... it can be twisted, or interpreted in many different ways." He looks at her, quietly sitting next to you, still clutching your hand. "So don't think you're going to get rid of her easily." He laughs.

"I... don't intend to. I just want to understand what I'm getting into." You raise your hand and hers. "Are we really married?"

"Maybe you were, if your previous lives. Some Lunars feel the Bond more strongly than others. For some, it was rivalry. For some, antagonism. For some, companionship. For others. friendship. For some, love." He nods at Tia, talking about her like she's not even sitting there. "Looks like you're stuck with this one. No refunds."

Amata loses it. She starts laughing out loud. "Oh my dragons it's like a teen romance novel."
>>
You're not sure you care much about either of their senses of humor right now. The worst part is that Tia doesn't seem to get mad about it, or even care about it. Maybe she doesn't realize she's being made fun of. Is she? You can't even tell.

You decide to change the subject while you have time. "...Say, Talon."

He chews on his cigar a bit. "What?"

"Would you consider an alliance? Both the Lintha and the Abyssals that attacked Tianna are a threat for your people as well as ours. Can I ask you to fight them together, side by side."

"Your people have never cared about us. Now that you're in trouble, you start taking about an alliance. I'm not going to get my claws dirty with other people's problems. Not out of our good will: we have none." He grins.

Everybody thinks Tia is unstable psycho and obsessive of Maka, but that's not true. She just knows and Maka doesn't ;__;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ab-vsDvkxU

It's late in the night, dancing is done
The music has died, you're ready to run

But you don't have a clue, this party hasn't ended yet
Not for me and you, now you're just pretending

You're hiding from yourself,
Yes you are, yes you are
Like golden rays of sun in the cloud

We're meant to be one, I know we are
If I am the sky, then you are my star

Hey you don't have a clue, this party never ended
Not for me and you, I know you're just pretending
>>
>>30610305
She is coming off as a little crazy though. That said, I've always wanted to give her a chance, especially now we know she's our Mate In-Character. We're going to have to talk to her about it in more depth tonight, after we finish that bath

...knows what? We're not reincarnated lovers, we're brand new people who inherited exaltations that once belonged to a pair of lovers. Exalted doesn't do reincarnation romance - thinking that way is just delusion riding on the memories of people who are now dead and gone.

And she is acting fucking crazy as hell.
>>

>>30610305
she might not be unstable or psychotic, but she's definitely obsessive over us. That said, that might be because she's been having flashbacks of us for years, so she could mellow out now she has us. And we should talk with her, get to know each other a lot better over the next few days and nights. And of course, see if hse has any ideas for lovers to add to our harem

Talon sounds and looks like a tough customer if you ever met one. You breathe a lungful of air, clear your head, and try and smile a winning smile.

[Essence Spent]

"...I can't make promises for the city of Tianna. I don't have soldiers or nations at my orders. But I have myself."

Talon seems amused. "Is that what you're offering to me?"

"Depends." You admit. "Is it enough for you?"

He thinks about it. Both Amata and Tia shift their gazes from you to him and back again, nervously.

"Maka." The queen puts down her cup, still half-full of wine. "In my position, I can't promise any help to the island tribes against the Fae. We're stretched thin enough. And... frankly, I'd prefer if you stayed in Tianna in case we suffered another attack."

You can understand her point of view. "But we need to help each other." You point out. "Together, we'll be stronger."

She nods. "I can't give you order, nor do I have any wish to. And, I'll grant you this: you can go alone, or bring with you any volunteers you can recruit from Tianna's population. But only as long as they're not already in service of the armed forces, the bureaucracy, or otherwise indispensable."

You have no idea of what it takes to fight Fae. You don't know if having other people with you would be a help or a hindrance, either. But you have to admit that Amata is giving you a lot of credit, and a lot of trust.

"I will come, too." Tia adds, proudly.

Talon, who was following your exchange with Amata, turns with a smirk.

"I will follow you everywhere. We will be together forever." She adds, perhaps a bit too forcefully.

"That's... nice." You reply, trying to be polite and understanding.
>>
(>>30610103 >>30610485 Goddamnit sorry. This happens when you jump from PC to PC all the day.)

"If you will fight the Fae with us, we will fight the Abyssals with you." Talon nods with the tone of someone who makes a solemn proclamation. "But you alone won't be enough."

You thought you had become a fairly big shot by being a Solar and all, so Talon's humbling remark brings you down hard. "...I'm sorry?"

"Bring more than yourself-"

"And me!"

"...and Tia, who was going to fight the Fae anyway because even though she might have forgotten about it she's still one of the Three Rivers."

"Three Rivers?" You wonder.

"Our name." Tia explains to you, shrugging in her shoulders, not making a big deal of it.

"So, you want me to bring some larger force? Troops? Allies?" You ask for confirmation.

"What you can. Both to have more power to our side, and as a proof of your competence."

Tia frowns at Talon implying that you might be incompetent, but you calm her down by gently squeezing her hand. "I will do my best." You reply.

"Do it in three days. On the fourth, meet me by Azure Lake at noon with whatever help you can bring. We will make a plan against the armies of chaos then." He nods. Then, to Tia: "...let me guess: you're not coming back to the north with us?"

"A husband's place is by her wife's side." She replies, adamantly.

Clearly Creation has some corny ideas about ideal romances that are not based on factual metaphysics that very few know anything about.

Is Tia slightly wrong about how things are? Yes. Does she have reason to think she's right? Also yes. Does she have an intense, one-sided emotional bond with us that she's struggling to express? See a pattern? I'm not saying calm down and take it up the but from her. I'm saying we should try getting her to open up enough that we can have a real discussion and persuade her to look at this logically and court us like a sane person if she wants us the way she seems to.

...I'm not sure what you're trying to say. What I'm saying is that Maka and Tia are not reincarnations of the previous holders of the exaltations. They are new people entirely. Tia is, unfortunately, suffering from an abundance of memories that didn't get cleaned off of her exaltation before being recycled, and an unusually strong link between her exaltation and ours.

We are strangers regardless of her sudden feelings. We have literally never met - not in a previous life and not in this one - and the memories and links are causing her to act obsessively over us, a stranger.

She doesn't know us. She doesn't remember a previous incarnation we had. She's just suffering from a magical compulsion and too many of someone else's memories. That's how exaltations work.

Gods, even. Ideally, we want to visit any spirit courts we can get into. The volcano god, for example, is definitely someone we want on our side.

>With recruiting and needing to convince the masses i say we thake seducing demon dance and start on some speches.
Absolutely not. That charm is literally mind control. The idea that we would use that on the population of Tianna after Amata specifically asked us to just take volunteers is insanely disrespectful and morally repugnant.

>if she has the Past Life background, she actually knows us, and Exaltation is a pseudo-reincarnation. Its an addition to someone's soul that carries bits of previous Exalts with it.
The Past Life background is only accessible to Infernals and she still wouldn't know us, she would just have much more complete memories from the previous holder of the Exaltation.

It's explicitly not reincarnation. You're always a new person entirely holding an exaltation that someone else used to have. The new holder of the exaltation doesn't have the same souls, the same personality, the same memories, the same life, or anything else that the old holder did because they're an entirely new and different person

>Its an addition to someone's soul that carries bits of previous Exalts with it.
It carries bits of SOMEONE ELSE's memories with it, which some exalts mistakenly take as their own. In the settings actual metaphysics, a new holder of an old exaltation is a 100% different person. The exaltation itself is where the link both begins and ends.

I do agree that having a RIGHTEOUS MARTIAL ART FIGHT with a god would be interesting
>>
>>30610622
You are right, but this is also a very metagamey way to look at things.
Tia is obsessed with us. She either really loves us, or is convinced she does. If you notice, she didn't talk much about "previous lives". Talon knows more about it than she does. All she knows is that she loves us and that she's our husbando.

All this talks of previous lives and who we REALLY are is really abstract and not something either Maka or Tia know much or care much about.
>>
>>30610718
If we do it, we might be mind-controlling a big chunk of the city's population into being led to their death in the island's marshes.

Hell, we don't even have Tiger Warrior Training Technique - not that we have the time to even use it - which means that the people we're taking would be COMPLETELY UNTRAINED AND UNBUFFED EXTRAS, since Amata said we're not allowed to take away her soldiers.

We would literally be leading bakers and school-teachers and shit to go die in a swamp due to a mind control charm. It's a fucking terrible idea.
>>
>>30610727
>The Past Life background is only accessible to Infernals and she still wouldn't know us, she would just have much more complete memories from the previous holder of the Exaltation.
You mean the Merit? No, it isn't. Any celestial can buy 1-5 dots of it.
>>
>>30610793
>You mean the Merit? No, it isn't. Any celestial can buy 1-5 dots of it.
No, I mean the Past Life Background, which is what that dude mentioned. It's an Infernal-specific Background because their exaltations don't get their memories removed from their exaltations between hosts. As for the merit - I wouldn't know. The merit and flaw system was universally trash and often directly conflicted with canon.
>>
>>30610747

Maybe we should go on a quest to look for those hidden dragonblooded and some heroic mortals and bring them instead? I agree that bakers and school-teachers are not the kind of people we should bring along.
>>
>>30610814
Actually, I was referencing the Merit in Scroll of Heroes. First part is
"Your character occasionally has flashes of memory
from a prior existence, whether they are a Solar’s hazy
recollections of the glory of the First Age or a mortal’s
remembrance of a prior existence."
that sounds like it at least indicates reincarnation of a sort, and if you bought it as a 4 or 5 point merit, you have some extremely vivid memories
>>
>>30610747

This. Also we apparently have a husband now.
>>
>>30610814
What Past Lives Merit does is indicate how much Lytek missed when scrubbing your spark clean of memories. 1 is dreams or bits and pieces, 5 is perfect recall. Celestial Exaltations aren't like mortal upper souls, which get reprocessed and remade into a blank soul, there's a god who has to clean them up every time the host dies.

Clarifying two things:

1) You don't have Husband-Seducing Demon Dance yet. XP expenditures are finalized at the end of the thread though, so if enough people agree you might end up with it.
It *IS* UMI. It does mean you are changing people's minds, tastes, wishes and desires to suit your needs. It's a very forceful act.
This is not an automatically "evil" or "monstrous" act. (in Exalted, very few are). It can be jsutificated. It can be done for good reasons. It can even be virtuous. But it's quite likely that Amata will see it as a betrayal of her trust in you... IF she finds out.

2) Concerning all the "past lives are not actual previous life" discussion concerning the setting metaphysics: By canon, it's true.
It's also a very metagamey way of considering the issue: neither Maka nor Tia understand how Exalted souls and past lives work.

Plus who's to say that in my version of Exalted there isn't a total identification between Solar Shard and Mortal Soul? Maybe they ARE the same thing. Maybe Maka and Tia ARE the same person, the exact same person, they were in their past life.

You don't know, and you shouldn't know, and you should find out by playing, not by cracking open a book and rummaging in the setting's metaphysics as a purely out-of-character exercise.

In the first thread I did mention that I was going to freely change anything I wanted to from the canon setting without warning, after all.
>>
>>30610846
>hidden dragonblooded
They were specifically described as being part of the military/bureaucracy system, and would without a doubt be considered essential.

>heroic mortals
We would want something less 'attract a crowd of followers' for that and more 'just fucking talk to them.' Honestly, though, we're a Zenith. We should be trying to attract god/spirit allies. We're actually quite well-equipped for that.

Regardless, Husband-Seducing Demon Dance is just plain not-useful right now.

I mean, they're built to be superweapons, I can see them doing that
>>
>>30611001
different anon, but we should probably grab Mastery of Small Manners or Respect-Commanding Attitude
>>
>>30610747
>we don't even have Tiger Warrior Training Technique
I think this is the most important point. We don't have the means to actually use any of the mortal followers we might attract in Tianna yet. If we're going to hunt for allies, we need to find already-competent - ideally supernaturally-competent - individuals and try to convince them to help us fight the fae.

That means enlightened mortal martial artists, island gods and spirit courts, even ghosts and such.

Getting a bunch of untrained commoners to follow us would, frankly, be more harm than good.
>>
>>30610893
Fuck yeah. Canon yields to story. Thanks, EF.

Also, Husband-Seducing Demon Dance is sounding like a really bad idea for recruiting. Useful one day, sure, but just not for that.
>>
>>30611022

tl"dr: Demon Dance only sounds bad because you using it wrong.
>>
>>30611001
I actually agree with this dude:
>>30611022

Let's make ourself impervious to the attacks of non-essence-users and highly-resistant to the attacks of even essence-users. That will allow us to fight much, much better in what is sure to be a very serious conflict.

Aside from that, we need actual powerful beings as allies. Island gods, ghosts, supernatural martial artists, and so forth. Not the rank and file commoners of this city.

>>30611087
Husband-Seducing Demon Dance is useful when you actually have charms that train mortals, or grant them supernatural buffs. If we had charms to turn a ditch-digger into a skilled swordsman overnight, or to protect an entire regiment we lead against attack, then it would be useful. We don't have any of those things yet, though, so all it would get us are a bunch of worthless lackeys.
>>
>>30611090
I am aware, just want to express the extent to which I find EF's attitude refreshing. You're right though, the nature of my day is of no interest to anyone but myself and thus should not nphave been commented on. Will keep your advice in mind going forwards, thank you anonymous poster.

Or if we had Ashigeru armor or something like that But it would still require us to train and buff them anyways
>>
>>30611097
It's the only way "you're your Exaltion" makes sense. Either the you after Exaltion is the you before the Exaltion, in which case your Exaltion has nothing to do with what sort of person you are, or the you after the Exaltion is a completely different person, which wouldn't make sense because why would the Exaltion need someone heroic if it completely replaces them
>>
>>30611164
Yeah. If we had literally anything that would help us improve a bunch of untrained extras into skilled/powerful somethings, then it might be useful here. But leading a bunch of Amata's subjects out to get slaughtered by fairies wouldn't do us any good, would probably make Amata angry at us, and would probably be seen as not-real-help by Talon.

We're a priest. We should be working with the island's gods. Surely they don't want Raksha in their domain, and would benefit from extra worship to boot. We have tons of bargaining chips, and they're the sort of troops we need for this kind of fight.
>>

Exactly this. Fate and, by extension, prophecy, go out the window completely where exaltations are concerned. Maka's Destiny was liked to be crushed to death by an Abyssal airship. He then stands up and says: "I'll leave you to your preparations then. I'll go check that Zaan isn't eating your furniture or anything.", leaving you with Tia and Amata.

"...Now. Where the heck I can find help?" You ask the queen.

"What, I thought you had a plan already." She playfully teases you.

"The island pirates." Says Tia.

Amata frowns, disliking even their mention apparently. "They're vermin."

"They're not vermin, they're... more... like... a mix of predators and scavengers." She points out, apparently very precise about her human-to-animal comparisons.

"They're not allied with the Lintha?" You ask her, and she shakes her head nin the negative as a response.

"They're a plague on shipping and commerce second only to them. Some of them operate straight out of Coral, but down here we mostly got the small fish thinking they're some big terror of the seas. They hide in the archipelago, sailing from little hidden havens and pillaging what few commercial routes we can manage." Amata clearly has no love for them.

"They value freedom and respect strength. They are ferocious fighters. You might manage to win a crew to you."

"If you do, by all means, I would love you taking out some of those ruffians." Amata downs the rest of the wine. "I won't humor them by pretending they're an actual threat, but they seem to enjoy the fact that our naval force is spread too thin to properly sink them down to Siakal's Locker a bit too much. Some punching might be in order."

"That might be helpful, but it would only give us a force strong on the seas. Besides, I might not know much about fighting the Fae, but a crew of mortal pirates with no supernatural assistance might not be of much use to us."

"But you will be leading them." Tia replies, with undying faith in you. "You will find ways to make them strong. I know you will."
>>
>>30611812
That's possible.

We're talking the tier of that sleeping primordial who knows the infallible future if/when he awakens, thus only allowing free will as long as he remains asleep.

"...How do you know for sure?" You can't help but ask. You really envy her dedication, at least.

"Because having you nearby makes me stronger." She replies.

Uh-oh. Amata is about to start laughing again. Better keep the conversation going.

"...Regardless, I'll still need someone else. Amata! You once mentioned the city god, remember? Wouldn't you mind introduc-"

"He has a job, you know." She replies, trying to stay serious between fits. "Sorry, but I need him here. But I can introduce you to him! He can probably put a good word for you to the other main gods of the island. The god of the volcano is the most powerful, you might want to try to meet her. Unfortunately I don't know much about her. We're in... we have a strained relationship."

"Howso?" You wonder.

"Well, volcano gods love human sacrifice. Which is not something I'm particularly keen on. Plus I don't want to encourage her too much. I prefer sponsoring our city's god, for reason I'm sure you understand."

You nod. You can really see where this is going.

"But, if you're looking for more help on top of that, well..." And she's interrupted by the scraping noise of someone pulling up a chair and sitting next to her, and someone going "May I join you?"

It's that man with long hair and the black scarf and the long cloak. The one from earlier tonight.

He seems very thin, almost malnourished, under all those layers of clothes - which are also weird, because it's fairly warm in here. He still has that slightly sickly, slightly tired look, like someone who sleeps too little or doesn't eat enough, but he gives you a pleasant smile and offers to shake your hand.

"I'm sorry we haven't had time to talk in person until now." He says, in a surprisingly deep voice now that you pay attention to it. You notice a flicker of golden light on his forehead, between his hair, faintly vanishing almost immediately. "I'm Mikahil of Tianna."

Seems that way. Thus far, Tianna has, at the very least, two Solars, two Abyssals, and three Lunars. I don't know what's up with this island's Destiny, but shit's going down here. World-shaking shit.

Not very. They're fuzzy enough that you can use them to unreliably predict the future, but not enough to invalidate free will, thank fuck.

>has someone figured out how to make them talk yet?
Anyone with the power to do so is EXTREMELY invested in keeping him asleep. As soon as he wakes up, 100% of the rest of time is objectively predetermined.
>>
>>30612027
We should, instead, be talking about how fucking pivotal this island must be to have at least 7 of the 700 Celestial Exalts on it - so far. That's 1% of all of the Celestial Exalts that can possibly exist at one time all on a single island.

That's a big fucking deal.

Ehh, it's not really that big of an issue.

Until it is.

Also, I don't think the Abyssals are only on this island, it sounds like they're operating in the region and conquering lots of nations

So, being a complete new guy to Exalted, that means that we're completely missing something about this island, it being anything from magic power to hell I don't even know.

Of course the island's a big fucking deal. WE'RE here. Why wouldn't there be crazy pivotal stuff happening around us? We're the goddamn PC.

>>30612060
Well the two abyssal want to conquer it so it could be rather important. We're also rather far to the west and there isn't really any realm presence so I'd say it's a good place for Lunar Exalt to hide. Lintha have an unnatural obsession with the island too.

You stare at his forehead. "...You're a-"

"Yes." He nods, pouring himself half a cup of wine.

"Remember?" Amata grins. "I told you you weren't the first one I met."

"I'm..." He takes a sip. "...invested in some other business off-island, but decided to lend a hand at Amata for a bit, considering her dire circumstances..

"So you're M." You frown, and lean in closer. "What was up with that message? You better explain."

"Well, I wasn't sure how far you could be trusted. I wanted to find out." He calmly explains.

"I told you I trust her." Amata notes.

"You trust her not to have further motives and to be friendly and loyal. I wanted to test her skill at handling subtle matters."

"Maka isn't... very subtle." Amata admits with a giggle.

"Subtlety is for the weak!" Is Tia's proud statement.

Mikahil smiles politely at her, then continues: "Their first base in Shark Alley was well-prepared. They had hideouts, escape routes, everything ready. I couldn't attack it myself, not without risking one of them seeing my face and running away, blowing my cover. I didn't have time to find out who I could trust and who I couldn't in the militia, and I couldn't get to Amata without suspicion. But you were less under control." He explains in detail.

"So that's why you wrote only to me? Both to defeat the Lintha ambush, and to test me?" You ask.

"You can say that. The way I saw it, in any case you would've defeated the ambush."

"...You knew that I would let the secret out, that the Lintha would find out, and that they would move the ambush three roads uphill?"

"I didn't know that you would accidentally let the secret out, no. But, I was prepared for either case. You would've either defeated the Lintha, or raised enough of a ruckus to force them to move the ambush there."

You remember the alleyway where you fought. "A narrower space. Less paths of escape. Less hideouts."

"You planned everything." You're not sure if you should admire him for the deviousness of the plan, or punch him for using you as a pawn, but you decide for the former.
It IS pretty impressive, and the guy, Exalted or no, looks like he could break like a twig if you shook him too hard.

"Well, not everything. I had a plan A and a plan B."

"What was the plan C?" Amata asks.

Mikahil bites his lips. "Expose myself, take on a bunch of Lintha and two First Circle Demons myself, silently weep for my bitter failure for the rest of the day. Maybe get a bit drunk."

"You can do that anyway." She pours him a bit more wine, then empties the bottle in yours and Tia's.

The lunar's reply is: "I like this plan C. Make it a plan A next time." She gulps down the whole goblet in a slow but uninterrupted go, and then slams it back down on the table. "With slightly less crying maybe. Well, no. It's alright for you to cry after all."

"...Why is that?" He decides to humor her.

"Because your wife is not as amazing as mine." She beams with pride.

Both Mikahil and Amata have a hard time staying serious as the Lunar grabs the bottle and inspects it to check if it's really empty. Apparently she enjoyed it. "Did you meet her?" The Eclipse then asks.

"No." She admits, with a noncommittal shrug. "But it's a reasonable guess."

"We Eclipse are Chosen by the Sun to be his emissaries in strange places. There are very ancient, very powerful oaths that grant us safe passage when we're on official diplomatic missions to other realms, and they extend their protection to our entire entourage. Spirits, demons, ghosts, the fey." He says, uncorking the bottle.

As soon as he's done with that, Tia snatches if from his hands. "We'll talk with the fey when they'll be off our island! It will be mostly calling them names." She pours it to you, filling to the brim your half-empty cup, and then then just dumps the remaining content down her throat, under Mikahil's astonished and depressed gaze. "Until then!" She continues, cleaning her mouth with the back of her hand. "I plan to make myself a drinking cup from a Raksha prince's skull! Or maybe a full set." She taps on her heart for five times with her finger and then slams the bottle back on the table.

Mikahil looks like he's about to cry. Amata looks like she's about to start laughing again. "Please, Tia... Until you get your set of faerie-skulls drinking cups, just use the normal ones."

"I can't! I'm making an oath now. No more drinking until I can drink from the skull of a fey prince." She says proudly.

"Drinking from the bottle doesn't count?" You wonder as you carefully sip from your almost-overflowing cup.

"It doesn't." Is her immediate reply.

"Then don't drink straight from the bottle!" Mikahil complains.

He sighs and sinks a bit deeper in his chair, slouching a bit. "...I can come with you to meet the volcano god. With the two of us, we can probably push her around a bit. But not too much, remember! Gods have always friends, and, worse even, they have people they can complain to. Or, in the worse case, hostages."

"A city built on a volcanic island sounds like quite the hostage situation." You admit. "We'll have to handle her carefully. Ah! Milliam! Can you bring another bottle? Yes, another, sorry." Then to Tia: "And don't drink this one too."

She nods, clearly displeased.

Bit by bit, one by one, the people that have been hanging around up to now are starting to leave. The atmosphere is one of a successful night's end. The barbarian leaders and city dignitaries slowly part ways, and only a few are left.

"...I still haven't talked to Zaan or Samiel." You mumble, as the maids begin to put out the lights and Mikahil finally can enjoy some wine in peace.

"Well, Samiel's had a field day, I imagine. He's probably gone to sleep by now." Amata notes, looking around the room and not spotting him. "Zaan's still around."

"He's nocturnal." Tia helpfully informs you. You can, in fact, spot him sitting on a chair on the opposite corner of the table, slowly and carefully sampling some of the leftovers. The maids seem a bit too unnerved by his presence to get near to him to clear the table.

"I'm not." Replies Mihahil. "I'm going to get some much-deserved sleep. Maka?"

(cont)
>>
"Yes?" You turn back to him.

"I'll be around the palace tomorrow, looking up intelligence reports and such. If you need me, I'll be in the library. I'm going to leave the island the day after tomorrow, so if you want to go and visit that goddess, there's just tomorrow if you want to do it together with me."

"I'll keep that in mind." You reply as he leaves tiredly.

"I think he sleeps once every five days or something like that." Explains Amata as he abandons the dinner room. "Unless you need something, I should probably go to sleep too. Today's been nerve-wracking."

>>
(Voting more or less equal, picking one choice myself to give thread better closure and keeping other choice open for next thread)

You lean in, and Amata smiles like someone who has to spoil a spoiled child and you exchange a goodnight kiss.

As she leaves, Tia, who was staring, asks you: "She was one of your lovers?"

"I told you, didn't I?" You reply. You wonder if she had forgotten, or if she didn't understand you meant.

"...I'd like to have a chat with Zaan, but it's so late." You muse. It's already pitch black outside, and the lunar has left too.

"You'll probably be able to meet him tomorrow." Tia consoles you.

"At the camp you mounted outside?"

"No."

"He's staying in the castle?"

"No."

"...In the city?" You begin to take it as a guessing game.

"...Almost."

"...In the bay?" You dare to guess, remembering his many shark-like features. She nods in response. "...I see. Well, we should probably move. We're in the way of the cleaning."

She latches back to your hand. "Bring me to your bedroom." She demands.

Well, it's not like there's much more to do, you reason. Even the option of a romantic walk on the battlements is out, assumed you were thinking about it: They are full of soldiers and weapons right now.

Your trip through the corridors is a silent one. As usual, Tia doesn't seem to start conversations unless she's responding yo something someone else is saying, or if she has something important to say. You're starting to wonder if she just naturally enjoys moments of silence.

"Your room is disgraceful." Is, however, her first statement upon seeing it.
>>
"It's a guest's room. It's not very rich or large or elaborate. I'm just a guest here after all." You justify yourself, or, rather, your host's kindness, but it turns out that Tia was complaining about something else.

"No luxurious animal pelts to sleep on. It's like you want everyone to know you never felled a devil-lion bare-handed. Or a buck-ogre. Or a-"

"Again, Tia, not actually my room. I don't have any of my stuff with me." It's best to let her think that you have a stack of whatever-lion pelts at home, probably.

"Where are your concubines?" She then asks.

You roll your eyes in exasperation. "Not here, obviously." You can't resist some sarcasm at this point."

"Who warms up your bed then?"

"No one. It's cold."

"I thought you lived a life more befitting of a Zenith queen." She says, taking it personally. "Wait." And she lets go of your hand and sneaks in your bed ahead of you. "Don't come in until I say you so."

Maybe you should be grateful that this is the first time she's actively keeping a distance from you, but, as usual, it's hard to follow her line of thought. "...What about your lovers and concubines?" You decide to flip the question around, just to see how she reacts.

"I've been travelling a lot. I couldn't carry them with me always."

"See, it's the same with me." You reply.

"But wherever I've stopped I tried to get some. To assuage my loneliness."

Those words have some real sadness behind them: To you, her obsession might be something like a bizarre annoyance, but to her, it must have been... depressing. You can't imagine feeling strongly for something the way she seems to feel about you... and being away from it.

"But now, I don't need them anymore." She states. "Because I have you."

(a lot of interesting votes. I'll try and go with the overall gist of it.)

"...Tia." You approach the bed, and look down at her. She almost worries you, but with how genuine, how proudly displayed, how worn on her sleeve are her emotions... you can't really help it. "It's... It's all right now."

"Yes." She seems ABSOLUTELY sure about it.

You sit down on the edge of the bed.

"You've been waiting for me. You've been looking for me."

"Yes."

"...Now I'm here. I'm not going to run away. You can relax. You can stop worrying." You whisper to her. "But... I might not be what you were expecting."

"I don't care." She immediately rejects that argument. "It's still you that I want."

She lifts the blankets, and a wave of dry heat washes over you. You can only presume that her shapeshifting extends also to control of her body temperature, because your bed is now wonderfully warm.

"And I want you now." She invites you. Seeing her still fully clothed in her grand wedding tress under the blankets is a weird contrast.

For your part, your dress isn't going to be anything but a hindrance under the blankets, Fortunately, is something you can easily and quickly remove.

You have just done that, and the expression on Tia's face is that of someone so incredibly happy that she looks like she could die any second. You're actually a bit scared by it, but try and play it on a laugh. "What's with that reaction? I was almost naked already."

She doesn't look like she's in any condition to reply right now, so you edge her on a bit. "Was what you wanted me, or just my body?"

"No reason I can't be glad for having both." She finally manages to mumble an answer. As you begin to climb into the bed and get into range, she practically snatches you and pulls you to her. The frills and soft fabric of her dress give, in the heat, a fresh and gentle feeling against your bare skin.
>>
"Right. We still have a wrestling match to settle." You twist and pin her down to the bed, catching her by surprise. "First, let's get you out of this." You add as you slowly remove her dress. The fabric slides on her smooth skin almost effortlessly. On a whim, you decide to leave her shoulder-length silk gloves and thigh-high stiletto boots on.

While you're removing it, however, she comes back to the counterattack, tossing you about the bed. Like before, she's not holding back her strength. You worry for a moment that you might damage it, but you don't think Tia would understand or care for your concerns.

While you're tussling about and trying to remove the dress without damaging that, at least, a thought hits you. "... You earlier said that I'm your wife. And that you're my husband."

"Yes." She grits her teeth, putting her strength against yours, arm against arm, trying to get back on top of you.

"What did you mean by that? We're both women, so we should be wife and wife." That thought kept nagging you. "You also said that the opposite can be arranged..."

Finally overpowering her for a moment (or perhaps, she's let you overpower her), you pin her back to the bed, back down and stomach up, so hard that you distinctly hear one of the bed's legs giving way with a resounding crack. You'll worry about that tomorrow: you grasp the chance to fully remove her silky dress.

"I can be as much of a woman, or as much of a man, as you'd like." She explains proudly. "Whether you prefer me to be your husband, or your wife, or both." As the dress flies away and out of the bed, you understand what she meant. "Shapeshifter, remember?"

In that moment, you get a shiver down your spine. Like the sudden realization of having locked yourself in a narrow room together with a dangerous predator. You look down and meet her eyes, glowing red in the darkness.
