"O Wondrous Engine! Rouse from deepest sleep!
We beg you, god in iron form, to rise
And stand, to raise your splendored gaze aloft
We kneel before you, hear our hymns of praise!

O Wrathful Engine! Raise your steel-bound arms!
We beg you, god in adamantine clad
To slay our foes, with cannon, plasma, flame
And cleanse our sacred forge, and make it pure!"

--'Rite of Activation of the God-Engine', Verse 1 Book I

-----

In the grim darkness of the 31st Millennium, iron gods walk among men.

You are god-wielder. You are a proud scion of Legio Pugnatores, the sword of Forge World Yitorach.

Your skin is adamantium: your blood, promethium. Your heart is a star's heart, with roiling plasma roaring through your bones. You are armored by the Immaterium itself. You carry death in one fist and fire in the other.

You are the Machine God's own wrath made manifest.

You are a Princeps, pilot of a Titan. And today, you walk upon Ahran.

-----

You look up, and the Warhound meets your gaze.

It looks down upon you, like a monstrous, hunched wolf, the light of the Titan bay gleaming off its armored hull. The loud bustling of servitors and tech-adepts are nothing to you, the clashing of pistons and whirring of drills fail to draw your attention--how could they, when this metal god stands before you?

Your eyes take in the artisanal details on the Titan's hull: the battle-histories etched into its adamantium, the war banners draped across its shoulders, the sleek gun-barrels that herald death with every roar. The beauty and majesty of it all take your breath away.

Though the God-Machine sleeps, you can feel its anger seeping through its metal shell. It seizes you. It almost overwhelms you. It demands your name, and you cannot help but answer.

"Darius Pullo," you whisper. The slumbering Engine claws at your mind, until a voice to your right breaks you out of your reverie.

“Wondrous, isn't it? And now they've finally put you at the helm!” You turn and see a young man, his short, straw-blonde hair tousled and his grin wide and bright. He is tall, half a head taller than you, and his red-black Titan crewman's garb hangs loosely off his lanky form. He grasps your hand in his and shakes it so vigorously you wonder if you'll lose your arm. “Congratulations! For only the sixtieth time since last week,” he adds with a chuckle.

Cuugo Nicator: your Moderati, and one of your longtime friends.

A second voice joins your laughter. “The Princeps is quite well aware of his new stations, Moderati Nicator. You'd do well to leave him to his preparations.”

Cuugo guffaws at the admonition. “Oh, come off it, Mistra, don't act like you're not excited as I am! Besides, he's ready. Have you ever seen him not ready?”

From your right is a short woman, her reddish-brown hair framing sharp cheek-bones. Her left eye is a natural green: her right, a red bionic. She is Mistra Ossea, another of your Moderati, and a second longtime friend.

You say...

Cuugo's grin grows wider at your reply. "See? What did I tell you? You always worry over nothing, Mistra." He tries to pat Mistra on the shoulder, who brushes him off with a roll of her organic eye. "Come on, let's get some nutrients and limber up, the ground's sure to be thick with Orks and we'll be killing them for a while."

They wave you goodbye as they stride off. You watch them go for a moment, then pull out a data-slate: one last review of the briefing before you Walk.

Just as you finish reading through the data-slate, a young man with cropped black hair and a heavy jawline calls out to you--Servatus Obsevat, Princeps of the Reaver-Class Titan Gladius Fraglans. You smile back, and your smile is...

>Your smile is bright and energetic, like the others you'd given him back when you were both young Moderati, competing for kill-tallies. (Gain a friendly rival)

"Servatus!" you say, putting aside the data-slate. You both clasp one another by the wrist.

Still gripping your hand, Servatus says, "Ha! About time they made you a Princeps!" But the joy in his face drains as he remembers something. "A pity...a pity there's so few of us now. Your induction ceremony would have been something to remember. But no matter." He tightens his grip and his smile returns. "We are here now, to continue Pugnatores. I expect you to match my record on my first Walk, you hear? Three Ork Engines, and no less!"

You match his grin with your own. "Don't worry, Servatus, I'll be adding four kill-tallies to my name today."

"Ha! The Machine God's blessings, then, you will need them!"

"Ah, my sons!" says a voice from above you both. "My good sons! Already in high spirits for battle, I see."

An amniotic tank, its walls clear as glass and its contents rendered murky by the slick, grey fluids contained within, glides above you aloft a crane-arm. Inside is the obscured form of an old man, wrinkled from age and the stresses of decades of god-wielding. Both of you immediately stop your jesting and bow low.

"Princeps Ultimus," you both intone.

It was Lord Exobite Herrax, wielder of the Warlord Contumax Belligator and Princeps Ultimus of Legio Pugnatores.

"Excellent!" he says. His chuckle is melodius and warm, despite the vox-appartus corrupting it. "The Astartes have a saying I particularly enjoy--'as iron sharpens iron, so my brothers and I hone one another'. It warms my heart to see you both in a better mood again." Then his tone seems to drop, as though the strength fell from it. "So few of us left now...we must look to our own, and stand united and fight together."

After a pause, the warmth in his voice returns. "Ah, but I am rambling." Then he laughs, "Lift your heads! Kowtowing is for the diplomats and peace-talkers, not us Warmongers."

As you and Servatus cease bowing, Herrax's tank is lifted to a colossal war-engine's cranium, where servitors trundle about fitting the Princeps Ultimus to the Unrelenting Warbringer.

Servatus gives you one last grin. "I will see you on the battlefield. Fight well, and try not to embarass yourself." Laughing, he makes the sign of the Cog, and strides off towards his own Engine.

(Sounds good, I will be writing up posts for each option after you're done talking with Deculta.)

>Speak with Deculta, Tankred's Enginseer
There is still a little time left before you must Walk. In the interim, you decide to go speak with Deculta, Tankred's Enginseer.

As you make your way towards the rear of Tankred, you weave between and around various work Servitors as they wheel and trundle about. A few meters ahead of you, you spot Deculta. You say to him, "Hail, enginseer. Are the final preparations complete?"

Deculta turns. The movement is inhumanly smooth, as what turns the enginseer around are not legs or even artificed fascimiles of legs, but great masses of mechadentries jutting out of the lower hem of Deculta's red robes. Another mass of mechadentries holds up a data-slate, while several individual mechadentries snake up towards Tankred's leg, tightening bolts and checking seams. At the sound of your voice, he looks up, revealing a smooth metal face, with a large circular green eye-lense at the center surrounded by five lesser ones, two on the left and three on the right. The central lens turns its gaze to you, while the five others continue poring over the data-slate.

"Greetings, Princeps P1-51-Gamma; preferred apellation 'Darius Pullo'. I am experience a marginal increase in Dopamine levels at your presence. How may I be of service?"

You are about to speak when your gaze flickers towards the data-slate he is holding. Is it...?

Yes. Yes it is.

Deculta had once been an honored Artisan on Forge world Yitorach. By his fifty machine-blessed dendrites he had artificed great works in the name of the Machine God, and his was honor and glory. Half a decade ago, however, his interests turned from that of iron and fire towards...the less savory.

He had become enamored with the human form--the female human form, to be exact.

He insisted that he studied his newfound subject as one would any other, and boasted that he would rival even the Magi Biologis in his knowledge of the human body. If the emulation of the Machine God required augmentation of the human body, then surely studying the base flesh form furthers the Quest for Knowledge? But, politics meant his rivals had a pretense for casting him down. Degenerate, they called him. Heretic of the grossest kind. A lifetime as a Servitor would be too good for him.

Deculta was far too useful to be simply killed for his "heresy", however. The lords of Yitorach offered him an ultimatum: serve as a lowly enginseer, or be annihilated and stricken from databanks. For his part, Deculta chose quickly, and adjusted to his new position just as fast.

Nonetheless...

"Final maintenance report is complete," he says, his voice rendered monotone by his vocal augmetics. Eye lens flicker up and down while he slides along the bay floor towards you. The masses of dendrites that formed his legs means "walking" was not quite the right description for when he moved. "Exloading to you now..."

The blurt of data passes by your eyes. Reactor reads, status of vox and auspex equipment, Void Shield maintenance reports...Tankred is ready for war. Wait...

"Enginseer," you say, lifting an eyebrow. "The report states that coolant injection is operating at...100.38% efficiency? Did one of the servitors commit an error during repairs?"

Deculta shakes his metal-bound head, his robes swishing loosely from the movement. "Negative, Princeps. During transit I took it upon myself to further coax performance from Titan Unit P1-51, Warhound-Clas Engine, preferred appellation 'Tankred'. So that it may better honor the Machine God." The eye lenses twitch again. "Are you angered, Princeps? Was this gratuitous? Exloading statements of apologies..."

You stare at him for a moment, your mouth slightly open, before you shake your head and reply, "No, no enginseer. Indeed, I thank you for your service."

All six emerald lenses focus on you now.

"You are most welcome, Princeps Pullo. Blessings of the Machine God upon you." A pause. "I am glad that you are not so quick to judge, Princeps Pullo, unlike many of my colleagues."

You merely nod in reply. "The Machine God bless you as well, honored enginseer." You return the sign of the Cog, and move off.

>Speak with the other Pugnatores Princeps, Cantor Alaios and Hexa Atarko

You decide to speak with the rest of what is left of Legio Pugnatores: Cantor Alaios and Hexa Atarko. You find them under Atarko's Reaver, Clibanarius.

"...and I will be damned by the Machine God Himself if that disgusting scrap-form Unraed makes eyes at me again." Hexa Atarko, Princeps Prima of the Warmongers, second-in-command to Lord Herrax, grumbles bitterly as she paces around the sedate Alaios.

Atarko is an older woman, her bald head lacking the hair to hide her extensive augmetics. Her Mind Impulse Unit plugs are clearly visible to you, as are her metal scalp and her throat augments. She is of average height, and somewhat heavy-set. She turns to you as you approach. "What is it, Princeps Pullo?"

"Princeps Atarko," you say, nodding in greetings. "I was hoping we could discuss battle-plans before we Walk?"

"Hmph. What's there to discuss? We assist the Imperials and the Astartes with our guns, and shoot anything our size when we see it." Her voice turns into a snarl. "Only five of us left, and one of us untested, yet that fat fool Burgraed Unraed insists we Walk. Ahead of Legio Perditores, even." A scoff and a shake of her head, as she continues, "Politics. That's all it is. I'm glad that the Lords of Yithorach see it fit to continue bleeding us dry when we are at our weakest, just to gain a little more favor from the Imperials and the Fabricator-General."

"Honor through battle. Honor and glory is what keeps us alive, not nutrient-wash or fuel."

[1/2]
>>
>>30618763
The soft voice comes from your left: Cantor Alaios, Princeps of the Ferrous Contus. A xeno bitch-creature had boarded his Warhound, once, hacking through the wolf-head cockpit with a crackling blade, butchering the Moderati and almost killing Alaios before nearby Astartes couls rescue him. Contus' MIU was damaged in the melee, and the backlash damaged his brain permanently. Fortunately for the Warmongers, his god-wielding skills were left untouched.

He turns his blue-eyed gaze towards the two of you as he rocks back and forth, back and forth, sitting on a crate. "Honor and glory," he says softly, "that's what the Forge Lords know, that's what the Forge Worlds need. Being unremembered is death. And so the Warmongers monger war, white and pale as death as we are."

You shake your head in reply. "The Mechanicus forgets nothing, Alaios. Nothing is deleted, everything is stored."

He stares at you again. "Nothing is deleted, yes. But not all remains unhidden, unsequestered. Pugnatores can be forgotten, put aside, left to rust, left to die. We die at the enemies' guns, or we die on time's blade. One or the other, one or the other..."

"Cantor. Cantor..." Atarko's voice is suddenly soft, her eyes full of concern. "Hush now. Hush. We must prepare for the next Walk." She places a hand on Alaios' shoulder, and he immediately stops rocking. Whether he's alright now or not, you're not certain.

"Ahem. Speaking of the next Walk, we only have one company of Astartes and armored Astartes units..."

"...will only one company be enough?" you ask. "Astartes may be Astartes, but if the fragmented auspex reports are worth anything, then we'll need more than just one-hundred."

"And that," says Atarko, "is what we are for. Lend the Emperor's little gene-forged soldiers our guns. And no need to worry--the X Legio are well-versed in the rites of the Machine God. They can handle themselves." A pause. "Though, I do wonder what they are doing here...I remember seeing some data-streams about their deployment in the Istvaan system, but what their business in that rebellious little system I am unsanctioned to know. Hmph.

"Ah, one more thing: the unlucky Imperials deployed ahead of us managed to get some readings on the shore's landscape. The terrain below sea-level is...not ideal for all of our amphibious landers, so there is a chance that the Warmongers and Annihilators will not all walk on the shores at once. If that happens, and you find yourself walking on sand early, do not delay in providing fire-support for the Imperials and Astartes--the rest of us will follow soon enough."

You give her a nod of acknowledgement. "Very well. The Machine God bless you, Princeps Atarko, Princeps Alaios."

Atarko gives you the sign of the Cog: Alaios can only give you another of his far-off stares.

If I recall correctly, "standard" Pre-Heresy Companies were still 100. The 1000-man units were Chapters/Great Companies/etc.

...granted, this info is from the Horus Heresy Forge World rulebook, so it may conflict with other stuff. Suffice it to say, there are ~100 Iron Hands along with you for the Execution on Ahran.

The time for proclamations is over. Now you go to war.

You are now in the wolf-headed cockpit of Tankred, the burnished controls sitting before you, silently begging to be used. Cuugo and Mistra are at their seats.

You can feel the shakes and rumblings of the amphibious coffin-ship that bears you--the waves outside must be turbulent indeed if your immense transport can be shaken so. Ignoring the goings on outside, you decide it is time.

"Moderati, insert plugs."

"Inserting, aye." You do the same, suppressing your wince as white-hot pain jabs into your skull. At once you feel the machine-spirit of Tankred roar in your mind, its battle-lust almost drowning you, its screams nearly shattering you to pieces.

"Princeps? Darius, are you alright?"

"I'm fine," you say. You make certain to show no weakness. It is time to Walk, not fall apart into a blubbering waste of flesh. "Do I have the Manifold?"

A sequence of key-presses. Suddenly, you feel great strength in your arms, your legs, as you and Tankred become one. Tankred's skin is your skin; Tankred's mighty limbs are your limbs. And you have only just begun.

"You have the Manifold, my Princeps."

"Light the auspex."

"Lighting auspex..."

360 degree vision is yours, as auspex equipment drinks in your ambient surroundings--thermal signatures, noise-wash, movement, more. If you wished, you could detect a rat from twenty-five kilometers away with several different senses.

"Auspex lighted. Begin reactor ignition sequence."

"Reactor ignition sequence starting in five...four...three...two...one..."

You gasp as the plasma reactor pumps roiling superheated gas through your steel muscles, veins, and nerves. Blood sings, no, screams, through your flesh-form, your heart racing.

"Plasma reactor alive," you breathe out. "Check armaments."

Concentrated tank fire can destroy you, for example, while infantry and light vehicles left unmolested can result in things like infantry boarding you (at which point you're in trouble). Actually, while we're at this...

This is not only my first time qming, but also the first time I've tried to devise a dice-based crunch system for this sort of thing. I have experience with D&D and such, but I'm no game designer that's for sure.

This means that the crunch you're looking at now is somewhat untested. I ran some test rolls to make sure nothing catastrophic was around, but again I'm not 100% confident. To that end...

Until we get comfortable with the mechanics, would you guys prefer me to:

Openly roll here what enemy roll results are

OR

Make enemy rolls in private

If rolls are public, then you guys will be at the mercy of the dice gods...but on the other hand, no one can accuse me of cheating.

If the rolls are private, then I can spare you any dice god wrath wrought at the hands of my own incompetence and game design...but, well, that opens me up to accusations of cheating.

What say you? I'll give you guys 15 minutes to vote on this.
>>
>>30619731

Ammunition is effectively infinite. I'll only start raising ammo concerns if you guys end up, say, operating for literally days at a time without any repair or rearming.

Example: in Dan Abnett's Titanicus, a Warlord Titan went 8 days straight without rearming, fighting the whole time, before its Vulcan Megabolter ammo ran out.

The groaning of hydraulics reaches your ears as the lander's bay doors open. A grey, dusty atmosphere greets you, the beach beyond already filled with the red flashes of lasguns and the streaks of tracer fire.

"Reactor online, auspex online, weapons online. All systems nominal, Princeps."

This is it. Now is the time.

Your grip tightens, your teeth clench, Tankred's battle-lust claws away at your mind.

>Consult Tactical and Strategic auspex to your left.

Churning water laps against your iron legs as you stride towards the beach. Before you are the Iron Hands Astartes, dug into cover as exploding sand bounces off their ceramite war-plate. To their flanks are some of the elite Imperial Army regiments of the 2754th: the Karthadi, the Tung.

In front of them, several hundred meters away, the green-skinned xenos are firing from a fortified wall stretching for kilometers along the beach. A pallisade of scrap metal shelters them from Imperial and Astartes fury. Crude, fast-firing guns, as well as equally scrap-wrought artillery and even more bizarre weapons rain down on the landing forces.

A voice crackles into existence. "This is Colonel Mago of the Karthadi 5th! We have an entire company of xeno heavy armor bearing down on us! I repeat, we are engaging a company of xeno armor! Requesting reinforcement and fire-support!"

Another one speaks to you before you can reply. "This is Hetman Lao of the Tung Lancers. Pinned down by xeno gunfire, unable to maneuver. We may end up being flanked at this rate, please advise."

Only silence from the Iron Hands, but you can already see that axe-wielding xeno maniacs are upon them, swarming them and beginning to slowly push the Astartes back, even as hundreds of them die in droves.

>>
>>30620741
For multiple rolls:

I will be picking the best of the first 3 posts. Since we'll be rolling 2d20 usually, it'll look like this:

16, 20

15, 21

14, 26

In this case, for the right hand column (right hand weapon), 26 will be chosen since that was the highest number of the 3 posts. For the left hand column, 16 will be chosen since that was the highest left weapon roll from the 3 posts.

Does this make sense? Feel free to ask if it's confusing.

>>30620744
We'll be going with this from now on. Left rolls = left weapon, right rolls = right weapon.
>>

>>
>>30620809
I have a vital question: is there any intelligence indicating that the Ork orbital guns can be turned on ground targets?
>>
>>30620845
better question:

Will the orks try it out, or is the navy a good enough fight?
>>
>>30620845
Intelligence indicates that the orbital guns are almost useless for anti-ground use. That said, this being Orks they may still try.

>>30620863
The bulk of the Fleet is busy trying to dodge or keep out of reach of said orbital guns. One of the reasons you are being landed by amphibious boats is because the usual landing ships can't fly down there.
>>
>>30620863
Since the skyshields negate orbital bombardment, we're the more pressing threat at the moment. Orks do have brains, although that cockney accent gives little indication of it. So yes, they probably will try it, even if they have to rip the guns out of their mountings to do it.
Plus, watching a Titan get a massive hole blasted through its torso is more fun than watching dots wink out on an auspex screen.

...explain.
----

>Firing in support of Tung Lancers, Karthadi

Moderati, firing solutions now."

"Firing solution calculated, eye. All weapons ready to fire."

"Firing..."

Yours is death-spitter. Yours is life-ender. Yours is a torrent of exploding rapid-fired shells and laser bolts thicker than a man's torso. You spit a torrent of shells at the sea-wall, sending much of the scrap tumbling down and many Orks with it. Your laser-bolts, meanwhile, into the crude Ork tanks, vaporising two. The sheer heat of the Turbolaser cripples another five.

The xenos are still numberless, but your fury has made them falter. The blistering fire from the sea-wall weakens, while the Ork armor turns to you. Seeing this, the Karthadi and Tung leap at the chance.

"Men of Tung, now, now now! Much appreciated, Tankred." In the distance, you see the Tung Lancers surge forward, running from cover to cover.

The Karthadi, meanwhile, also make their way towards the sea-wall, though some of them peel off to assist the Iron Hands.

The Iron Hands are still fending off the Ork infantry, though Karthadi assistance is easing the burden.

"Tankred, be advised: the Belligator and the Gladius are moments away from landing."

"Compliance, Lord Herrax, we will sweep the beaches of vermin for your arrival."

You decide that the Astartes may require some fire-support--the Karthadi are skilled, but there are quite a few Orks assaulting them. It also seems that the Karthadi supporting the Iron Hands have interposed themselves between you and the Ork armored column.

No matter.

Your Megabolter chews apart the Ork infantry, tearing gaping holes in their teeming mass. The entire horde visibly falters as scores of them are cut down in moments. Through magnification, you can see the Iron Hands commander raise his crackling sword, urging his Astartes to continue their unrelenting fury.

The Ork armor column is practically lanced in twain by your Turbolaser, the red bolt searing through the air into the column's midst. What appears to be the lead tank--or at least, the crudest and gaudiest one one--vanishes into steaming metal along with eight of its compatriots. A handful of them manage to volley off shots from their cannons before their demise.

You barely feel their blows. Rounds that rend even Astartes in war-plate are mere pinpricks to you, your Void Shield sending the shots screaming into the Immaterium. One gets lucky and manages to land a clean shot...but then, God-Engines are not called such if a single tank round could truly harm them.

"Void Shields hit, but stable," sings Cuugo.

The few remaining pieces of Ork armor finally veer off, having lost the heart to fight. Astartes and Karthadi alike move in to more secure positions.

"Tankred, this is Lord Herrax. The Belligator and Gladius have landed. Well fought, my good son."

Heavy Void-Shield returns and heat-wash to the North-East: indeed, two of the Pugnatores have landed.

"Ha! Nicely done, Darius. It's good to know Lord Herrax and I won't be needing to hold your hand like a novitiate for this level of work."

The guns of Belligator and Gladius are already blazing, annihilating the eastern portion of sea-wall near where they landed. You can see the bulk of the Ork forces retreating, with only those opposing the Tung on the west remaining; these, in turn, were being flanked by advancing Iron Hands armor.

The first phase of Eagle's Landing, it seems, has come to an end.

"Ha! Well said--"

"Er, apologies for interrupting, Princeps," says Cuugo, the pitch of his voice raised by concern. "Forward auspex from Karthadi elements indicates xeno forces incoming."

Servatus barks out a laugh. "What, more xeno armor? We won't need the rest of Pugnatores for some xeno armor, much less the Annihilators."

Mistra listens in on the vox as well. "Not xeno armor, Princeps."

"Then what?"

The Manifold whispers to you, feeding you data through your enhanced senses. The Karthadi...the Karthadi are retreating. No, not retreating--all but fleeing, running as fast as they can.

"Speak, Moderati Ossea."

"Titans, Princeps. Several of them."

"New auspex contact!" calls out Cuugo. "More xeno Titans, from the north! Interference from the Skyshield generators were masking their returns, but here they come!"

"The Contus and the Clibanarius report they are ten minutes away from beach-fall! Perditores fifteen minutes from beach-fall!"

Throughout it all, you hear one voice.

"And now..." says Lord Herrax. His voice is strangely soft; it is as though he is speaking to a frightened child. "And now, the true battle begins."
