Tear, having just returned from her trip to acquire you some less-than-legal merchandise, has now also offered you the opportunity to gain 'a potentially vast amount of goods for an extremely low price'. She hasn't explained what the method is, however she's informed you that the method will definitely be extremely dangerous, with a high chance of death for your agent. So you volunteered your new employee, Louie, without hesitation.
He doesn't seem too impressed with the suggestion.

[ ]"So what's this method?"

Tear's face is still blank from the shock that you've already found a 'volunteer' for her. You shock her back to her senses with a question. "Hey, uh, Tear? So what is this 'avenue' for getting stuff cheap?"

"Ah, hmm. Yes. Well, as you know, Pensee is a hub for Adventurers due to the many dungeons, ruins and wilderness surrounding the city."

Your eyes go wide. "Huh? Really? I didn't know that! That's so cool!"

"E- you live here! How could you not know something like that about your own home!?" She quickly subdues her outburst and collects herself. "Anyway, yes. A large portion of the industry and economy of this city is centered around supporting and supplying these Adventurers as they go out to search these ruins. Whilst there, they often find many treasures, rare ingredients or magical artifacts which can be very valuable to the right people. So we also gain large profit by purchasing these looted goods from the Adventurers upon their return and selling them to a more suited owner." You frown in concentration. "Are you following so far?"

"Uh...huh. I think so. So we sell adventuring supplies to the Adventurers, then buy their loot from them so we can sell that off for profit, right?"

"Precisely. Now, the means we may have acquired for getting this 'loot' cheap is that we would go out and get it for ourselves."

"EEEHH?! But that sounds really dangerous!"

"Exactly. I said as much. Which is why we shall be sending someone else." A thin smile stretches the fairy's features as she examines Louie, who seems to be quickly losing confidence in his decision to effectively become your slave in return for food. "And we shall begin our newest venture at first light."

You put a hand gently on Louie's shoulder, guiding his slightly panicking form inside the store. After sitting him in a chair, you head back to the pantry and grab a few ingredients, throwing together a quick sandwich and bringing it out to him. He looks at you with giant, uncomprehending eyes before you force it into his hands. "Ah, uh... what... is this for?"

"For eating, silly. What else?"

"F- for me? Really?"

"Yeah. That's what we agreed, wasn't it? I said I could feed you. Do you not like it?"

Tears start forming at the corners of his eyes, before he stuff the sandwich into his mouth while simultaneously trying to thank you from the bottom of his heart.
When he's done, you realize you haven't actually introduced yourself to him yet. You give him your name, then lead him upstairs to the bedrooms. Ah... bedroom.
Apparently this house only has one large room, with one king-size bed dominating the room, a few small dressers along the walls, and a cot in the corner that looks about the right size to fit Tear. Barely.

You offer him the big bed, and he again looks at you with those disbelieving eyes. After once again reassuring him that yes, you mean he can sleep in it, he starts to undress, giving you a shock by pulling his shirt off before apparently remembering that you're present and asking if you'd mind leaving the room. You do so quickly, and find Tear waiting not-so-patiently downstairs.

"There you are. Now, can we continue where we left off?"

"Yeah! So, we're sending Louie to a horrible, horrible death for our profits, right?"

"Now, normally if one wanted to acquire treasures and artifacts from the ruins, one would contact the Adventurer's Guild and be put in touch with an Adventurer in need of a sponsor. One would then sponsor the Adventurer in return for a choice cut of whatever items the Adventurer returns from the ruins with."
"Now, while this is usually a mutually beneficial relationship, there runs the risk that the Adventurer returns with nothing of value. And even if they do, the Adventurer's Guild charge an organisation fee, as well as tax on the incoming items. Of course, even if they bring magical artifacts in, those are either immediately seized or taxed to a cripplingly heavy degree by the Church, who have outlawed all magic not controlled by them. This is on top of the cost of hiring the Adventurer in the first place. So all in all, while it is possible to return from the investment in high profit, it will still require a large amount of capital being put at risk."

You ponder for a moment, "if the Guild charges us so much, why don't we just go without them?"

"Because they control access to the Dungeons. They are also the only body recognized by the law permitted to bring treasures and magical artifacts into the city. They also possess the only known available 'smart' invulnerability fields, capable of automatically pulling the Adventurer into their safety should they become overwhelmed."

"The invulnerability fields are the main reason that normally one would go through the Adventurer's Guild. There are many available invulnerability fields, however they are static in size and shape, and generally very small. The one I possess would barely fit you along with myself. For their higher fees, the smart field provided by the Guild means that all involved parties are guaranteed to always return home safely."

"Wait, if we have invulnerability field, why do we even need an adventurer at all?"

"That's simple. The field works by essentially shifting those inside it out of normal space, so that they cannot interact with it. Therefore, you cannot be attacked by those wishing you harm while inside it. However, you also cannot interact with the items you wish to carry. Thus, in order to loot, one must stay outside of the field."

"Oooh, okay. So we need to take Louie with us so he can loot for us!"

"Precisely. Now, as I've said. Normally, one would therefore choose to pursue the route of the Adventurer's Guild."
"However normally, one is not an employee of Terme Finance."
A distinctly evil-feeling grin.

"A fellow colleague of mine has provided me with information regarding a secret entrance to the Dungeons, currently owned and guarded by Terme personnel. We can therefore access the ruins for no fee. It runs the risk that our adventurer may be seriously injured, or even die at the hands of whatever foes we meet. However, there will be no fees, no taxes, and none of our items will be seized by the Church. Of course, it will also mean that all the goods we bring in will technically be illicit, unrecorded merchandise."

[ ]"Sounds great!" Take the secret entrance.
[ ]"On second thoughts..." Go through the guild.
[ ]"Maybe this adventuring stuff should be left to the Adventurers." Stay home and open the store.

We need to take Louie on a trial run or two, both to see if he has any potential and to cement his loyalty to us. Once he's convinced of our incontrovertible goodwill and benevolence ( and if he turns out to not be a hobo with delusions of grand adventure), then it may be a good idea to risk all of our lives for greater profit.

Plus it might look a little suspicious for a previously unknown shopkeeper to start selling dungeon-grade items while only making a few stops to the merchant guild. Gotta have some credibility or plausible deniability, unless Tear has some way to cover our asses.

You decide to grab the spare blanket from the closet, and take half the pillows from the unused side of the bed and set yourself up a comfy little spot on the floor to get some shuteye. It's not the most supportive of positions, and you can feel your back setting a bit funny as you rest, but whatever. You drift off to sleep pretty quickly.

----------

"Recette?" You're woken by someone shaking your shoulder. "Hey, Recette!" You mumble, and blearily open your eyes. Louie stops shaking you, a red tint to his cheeks. "Uh... did you just say... eh, nevermind." He averts his gaze. "It's, uh. Morning. The fairy lady is getting antsy, I think she wants to leave soon."

Ughn. Morning. Oh, right. You were supposed to go adventuring today! You spring up out of bed in excitement, leading to Louie yelping in surprise and turning his face to stare pointedly at the far wall. "Uhm, I'll just be waiting. Outside." He crosses the room quickly, shutting the door behind himself. Odd, why would he...? Oh, right. You bend over and pick your carefully folded clothes off the floor.
A few minutes later, you're outside the store with Tear and Louie, ready for the long day of adventure ahead of you!

The ruins definitely sound like the most exciting place to go! You say as much to Tear, and she simply nods in response. "I'm sure they will prove most profitable."

It's a short walk across the city to the Adventurer's Guild, which acts as the entrance to the loot-filled lands outside Pensee. The streets are empty at this time of day, the citizens still sleeping peacefully. Because no-one should be awake at this ungodly hour. Everyone SHOULD still be curled up nice and warm in their huge beds...
As soon as you come in sight of the building, however, Tear suddenly changes course and heads for an alleyway next to one of the nearby buildings. She takes you along a few more alleys before stopping in front of a non-descript door in the side of an old warehouse. She looks up and down the alley, as if checking for something, before knocking a peculiar pattern on the door.
A shutter
"Good morning, Jonathon. How are the little ones?"

A terse response. "Just fine, Miss Tear. And they'll stay that way. Where do you need to go?"

"The ruins, if you please." The shutter slams shut, there's a strange clicking sound from the doorknob, and then the door swings inwards. What lies beyond draws a gasp from both you and Louie. Instead of the inside of a warehouse, there is a long, dark corridor of stone stretching into the distance, with a few narrow passages branching off on either side.
Tear flitters through the doorway, and you take a few quick steps to keep up with her. "Oh yes, Recette. You may want to stay close to me from here on out. Only Louie needs to be in danger, after all.
You nod, and stick even closer to Tear, a tingly sensation suddenly passing over your entire form as you're shifted out of interactable space. Louie simply grumbles at the injustice and draws his short sword, holding it at the ready.
>>
>>30656382
He begins to take uncertain steps into the darkness ahead when Tear speaks up once more.
"Oh, I forgot to mention. These lands are known as the 'Living Dungeons'. The layout is never the same twice, the monsters present often increase in size and ferocity depending on the skill of the Adventurer, and some suspect the terrain moves about even whilst Adventurers are still inside them. Though this has never actually been witnessed, of course."
"Well then, let us get started, shall we? Most monsters we find in here will be able to give us some form of ingredients, though they will be of a common sort. The most valuable items we are likely to find will be set in treasure chests scattered about the ruins."

As soon as you round the corner with Louie, you spot something moving in the dark. You strain your eyes, and pick out the shape of... something humanoid, like a mangy dog standing on two legs. It's leaning to one side, as if rolling its shoulder ready to throw a punch! There's a flicker of light from the thing's fingers. You have just enough time to call out to Louie!

[ ]"OH NO!!" (Louie goes defensive)

"LOOK OUT!" As soon as the cry has left your lips, Louie throws himself to one side as the thing's arm is suddenly engulfed in flame as it throws a punch in his direction. Its fist sails past just inches from Louie's face, but he managed to avoid the blow, quickly bringing his sword up into the gut of the over-extended dog-thing and cutting it down.

"Phew... thanks, Recette! I never would've even seen that thing!"

"Heheh, wow. You're welcome, Louie. I'm just glad you're okay! This place really IS dangerous!"

Tear raises an eyebrow. "Of course it is. And that wasn't a particularly dangerous foe. Perhaps we could continue now?"

Louie bobs his head at the fairy, before turning his attention back to the area and continuing the search. It doesn't take long to find the next thing of interest. A rather large red mushroom with white spots growing against the wall of the ruined passage.

Louie starts to take a few curious steps towards the mushroom, but you call out to him in a whisper. "Hey, Louie, I really don't like the look of that thing. Just hit it with your sword, first. Please?"

He gives you an exasperated look, but shrugs and turns to hit the big mushroom with his sword. As soon as he does, it leaps into motion, squealing in pain before collapsing back against the wall in two halves, a suddenly visible pair of horrified-but-lifeless eyes now open and staring right at you in the mushroom's stem.

"Well done," Tear comments beside you, "you've successfully murdered a mushroom. Well don't just stand there, boy. Harvest it. We can use that."

mid-low rolls fusion junk

After pulling the lifeless guts from the mushroom and stashing them in the bag on his back, Louie continues his slow progress around the passages. When the passage finally comes to a dead end this time, your whole group cheers in excitement. It's a treasure chest! Just sitting there in the middle of the passage. It looks... really oddly out of place. But you ignore that and rush over, waiting patiently for Louie to open it.

"OPENITOPENITOPENITOPENIT!"
Okay, not that patiently.

"Alright, alright!" he crosses to you and pops the lid on the chest. His eyes go wide, he reaches into the chest and pulls out... a sword.
Really? He was that excited for a SWORD?

"Oh wow, look at this! The quality of the steel, the shape of the blade, the width of the fuller! This... this is a knight's blade!"

"Does that mean it's worth a lot?"

"YES! Though... you're not going to sell it, are you?? I'd do anything for a weapon like this!" His eyes really are glowing with excitement.

"Huuuu. Fine. I'll think about it."

"Yippee! Thank you, Recette!"

He's barely finished thanking you, however, when another knight's blade enters your vision.
"AAAH!"
An actual knight just appeared from behind you all and swung his sword at Louie!
Luckily, Louie's reactions are fast enough, and he dodges to the slide, avoiding the blow. The knight pulls his sword back to the ready, shield positioned to cover his entire front.

Louie quickly pulls his own shield up into a defensive position to mimic the knight, and they both face off for a long few moments. Without warning, the knight in armor suddenly pounces forwards with a heavy overhead swing. Louie easily dodges the blow, using his shield to deflect the hit and quickly smashing his sword into the side of the knight's head. The knight stumbles to one side, but quickly pulls its shield back into position, facing off against Louie once more.

Well, if it is, we can always ask if Louise knows how to fight WITHOUT us badgering him.

Will you people stop trying to turn him into a trap. There are much better candidates for that in the game, just be patient.
>>
>>30658069
But what if I want everyone to be a trap?
>>
>>30657915
They continue to circle around each other, neither side apparently willing to attack first now. It feels like an age has passed before the knight apparently loses patience, and once more comes in for a heavy, horizontal swing towards Louie's midriff. He throws his shield into the path of the blade, taking the hit, though it jars him badly, managing to swing his own blade through the opening between the knight's sword and shield, smashing the blade down on the knight's shoulder. For a moment, this knocks the knight off-balance, and Louie uses the moment perfectly, quickly stepping up inside the knight's guard and punching the blade as hard as he can upwards through the gap under the knight's breastplate, forcing the blade deep into the knight's chest cavity. With a cough and a whittling sigh, the knight collapses away into a collection of empty armor. That was intense!

"Well done, Louie!" You cheer his success.

"Indeed," Tear intones, "that was an impressive kill. Now, let us continue."

You note that Louie drops the shield he was previously carrying to pick up the knight's shield, but decide not to comment on it. He earned that!

And with only a few more minutes of searching, you find that you've explored all there is to explore of these passages, and find the stairway up to the surface. Letting Louie lead you out into the bright daylight, you find yourself in the courtyard of a ruined castle. In the very center of the open space is a HUGE chest. In excitement at the loot prospects, you all rush headlong towards it. Right before you open it, however, a voice stops you in your tracks.

"Thanks for freeing up the loot for me, darlings!" You spin around to find the source of the voice. Above you, straddling the parapet of the ruined wall nearest you, is a pretty girl twirling a dagger between her fingers. "I'll be taking it now, though.
