Welcome to Academy City. The time is late morning, the weather is partly cloudy and the date is July 31.

You are Kyril Torikov, 'Level 2' Telekinetic Child Error and you are going to steal something. There was no mincing words or fancy way to put it. Nunotaba Shinobu had tasked you with obtaining her research data from a university who has been misusing it. You owed her a favour and then some. You weren't alone in your endeavour however and your crew has spent most of yesterday preparing for the job ahead.

The plan, as you've agreed on was a multi-pronged attack. Sagara, disguised as a janitor would infiltrate ahead and facilitate Tadakuni and your own movements inside the target building. You were planning on arriving through the emergency tunnels and once inside you would acquire the research data as fast as you can. Exfiltration was through the very same tunnels and you had already stashed away your escape vehicle in preparation. Worse comes to worst Sagara would fabricate a distraction using the fire alarm. You even planned to strike at lunch hour to stack the odds. It was a solid plan but its not like you could plan for every eventuality.

Go with this plan?

The time is now 1203.

As planned Sagara managed to slip in as a janitor unnoticed. You and Tadakuni are waiting patiently in the tunnel. It wasn’t that you couldn’t open and enter from this side but you’d rather wait for Sagara to get something that could conceal you. His last report was that he was taking out the trash from the dean’s office and would be in the basement floor in a minute or two. It was about time for lunch and most of the staff was getting ready for it. Kyousuke for his part was hanging out well away from your AO. He had a great line of sight though and would call in anything that could throw a spanner in your plans.

“Uh boss,” apparently Murphy wouldn’t wait, “I think I see the Nunotaba chick entering admin.”

Oh great, you think. Whatever could she want?

“Hey K, this fish-eyed chick just winked at me,” Sagara reported a minute later, “I think she’s on to us.”

Your phone vibrates with a message from Nunotaba.

“What a happy coincidence,” it reads, “I’m sure I can assist you in your endeavour.”

You’re pretty sure it wasn’t but you had to make a call quickly. You could bring her in for assistance since she could easily engineer a distraction, or she could totally compromise everything by simply being in the know.

You make the call. It was her request and if she seemed set on helping you. You’re sure she couldn’t overtly recover her own data and that was why she was funding and using you. Sagara briefs her in quickly and you’re imagining that he was making it look like they were flirting with each other. She agreed to be your distraction though you’re not sure if she would actually hit a fire alarm or not. The panic word is “PLAGIARISM.”

The time is now 1209.

Sagara arrives with a cart in which you and Tadakuni could conceal yourselves in. You were thankful that the air conditioning/boiler room had no cameras. Sagara informs you that Nunotaba was having a chat with the System Administrator right now. This gave you a bigger window in which you could access the servers without being detected. As Sagara opens the door to the server room, he meets another janitor.

“Oi, what you doing in here new guy?”

It looked like the both of them weren’t supposed to be in the server room right now. You still haven’t been detected so you could probably TK his head in to the wall. Or you could let Sagara handle it non-violently.

There was no need to give up the game just yet and you let Sagara handle it.

“Well it’s lunch and I was looking for you since I don’t know any good food places around here,” Sagara answers.

“Oh right,” the janitor replies, “Forgot you’re from the seventh. Right well let me finish up here and we’ll get some lunch.”

The janitor picks something up from the ground and you take the opportunity to slip in with his back turned. He leaves with Sagara. For all intents and purposes Sagara was not going to be of use to you for the rest of the job without arousing suspicion. You also now had a scapegoat though. Keeping yourselves out of sight as possible, the both of you get to work on extracting the data. You make sure to grab everything that belonged to Nunotaba and nothing else.

The time is now 1213

Ten minutes later, you were down to the last ten percent when hear Nunotaba and what sounds like the System Administrator arguing about something. They were heading this way but it didn’t mean they were going to enter yet. You could overhear their shouting something about a theft occurring at the very minute. Shit.

She manages to keep him outside for just a little bit longer. It was all you need to complete the download. Then the System Administrator bursts in to the room. He is shocked as finding two masked men in his server room before his body convulses as if shocked by something else.

“ばれちゃた, it looks like we were found out,” Nunotaba speaks, “Is the download complete?”

Hurriedly you pull out the USB stick and stash it away.

“もう, one minute at best before they know something is wrong,” she advises, “We either go loud now or you’ll tie the both of us up, take my stun gun and leave as planned.”

It was better than you’d hope really, to be found out so late because you really didn’t know how to dodge the cameras without Sagara’s help.

“Boss, Sagara’s coming back. It looks like his friend is in a hurry, you might want to move it,” Kyousuke adds needlessly on the radio.

That was entirely too suspicious. You may not be in France but lunch should not have been that quick. If you took the time to secure Nunotaba and the SysAdmin, Sagara and his buddy could catch you, ruin the escape and eliminate the scapegoat. Leaving Nunotaba untouched could implicate her but it was also another option. On the other hand if you went loud then Anti-Skill and the robots would be sure to respond and quickly too. You were still exiting through the tunnels though.

The time is now 1225.

You decide you don’t want to take that risk and tie Nunotaba and the Sys Admin up. You even tase her for good measure.

The time is now 1230.

Running down the halls you hear someone shout for you to stop. Obviously you don’t but then the alarm starts ringing and it wasn’t the fire alarm. The lights in the tunnel dim immediately but you were prepared with flash lights. Several minutes of running later you find your scooter and hop on. Tadakuni drives while you sit on the back ready to clear obstacles in the way. It was a wise decision seeing as a line of robots stand before you.

“I thought these tunnels were unguarded,” you ask Tadakuni.

“Hey I mapped out the routes and they were probably well hidden,” he retorts.

All was not lost. There was a small incline off to the side that you could use to jump the robots. Hell your telekinesis could probably help the scooter catch some decent air and soften the landing. That said you weren’t exactly sure you could do that. The easiest solution was to simply just clear the roadblock with your TK but the robots would probably record your power being used against them.

Well there was little time to deliberate the matter so you tell Tadakuni to hit the ramp. He does so without hesitation, a manic grin on his face as he revs up the scooter as far as it could go. Knowing there was no way you’d make it over the robots without some help you reach out with your power modify a field to sustain your flight for as long as possible. It’s not much but it helps as your scooter clears the flat topped robots by mere centimetres. The landing is rough and you’re sure the scooter’s suspension wasn’t made to take this kind of abuse.

“This thing can’t take this kind of abuse,” Tadakuni echoes a few hundred metres and several turns later down the tunnel, “We should split up. They’re looking for a yellow scooter so I can distract them if they really come after us.”

It made sense to split up to further confuse the pursuers. You however weren’t the one that mapped out the tunnels and it wasn’t the easiest thing to navigate down here unless you used GPS. That could draw attention though so you’d have to make do without for a bit. Well you could use that as a distraction yourself since you were going to have to go on foot. Tadakuni would have plenty of time to take the data to a safe place whilst you tried to lose the heat. Whoever was going to be the distraction would not be carrying the data obviously.

>Split up, you’ll be bait
>Split up, Tadakuni baits

You decide to be bait instead and give Tadakuni the data. The data was more important right now but you sure weren’t going to get caught roving these tall, dark tunnels. Giving you a mock salute, he speeds off, giving you a map and instructions to pick a cardinal direction and keep heading that way. Since he sped off towards the east side you had three other directions from which to choose.

Your current heading would lead you south and you’d appear in School District 22. It was the safest and most predictable route of course. However if you really wanted to throw pursuit for a loop you’d double back and go north. School District 19 isn’t exactly a well patrolled place and you could easily lose the heat there. The third choice, the riskiest but perhaps the most rewarding is to head west. Tadakuni of course didn’t really map all that far but you knew if you trekked far enough you’ll show up in one of the western rail depots and cargo terminals.

Which way?

Flicking on your GPS you start hoofing it to the west. Predictably you can hear the sounds of your robot pursuers following in your wake. It’s not too many of them but they were after you now if only to investigate. They’re faster than you and they don’t tire so after another ten minutes you can tell they’re right around the corner. It’s a good thing you haven’t ditched your disguise yet so they can’t identify you through visuals alone.

With the ground you’ve covered you’re pretty sure you can turn off your GPS now. As long as you can stay hidden then you should be in the clear. That would also mean stumbling around in the dark however. Your other option is to ambush and destroy your robot pursuers. Telekinesis was pretty common but it’d narrow down their list of suspects and you didn’t have the best of alibis right now.

You hear what sounds like the buzzing of electronic communications in the background.

Opting for stealth, you switch off your GPS and take several turns, sometimes doubling back to lose the sound of your pursuers. Hell you catch glimpses of them from time to time with their beady red optics and constant buzzing. They’re robots, numerous, persistent and untiring but you press on avoiding the sounds of buzzing as they start a search of the area. You even think you hear a screech or a scream or a squeal further behind but you don’t stop. It’s no longer the relative darkness or the claustrophobia any more. What spooks you the most now is the buzzing. Whenever you think you you’re in the clear, the damnable noise starts again. Surely it’s just the tunnels. Surely it is just echoes travelling farther than they should.

Either way you steel yourself onwards, you hands along the walls as you grope your way around. Without the GPS you’ve lost all bearing in these monotone tunnels. It may only have been thirty minutes of you constantly listening for the sound of buzzing but it sure felt like much longer. Your mobile phone reads 1326 and several messages. It doesn’t seem like you’re being followed but you could never be sure. You hear another faint screech in the distance.

No, you can’t rest. Not now, not until you’ve gotten to safety. Right now, there was a bunch of murderous robots out there waiting to slice and dice anything they found. You keep going. You’re not sure where you’re headed but it definitely can’t be where you were. Step after, step, you keep moving. It’s tiring work, knowing that if you stopped you’d get caught. After that, well, perhaps death wouldn’t be so bad. You persist even after you stumble and break your flash light. Your phone was more than enough to the task. The batteries were certainly less but they’ll guide steadily.

The only sounds out now are the sounds of your footsteps but you can’t relax. Any moment now you’d expect to hear that horrid buzzing. The more you walk the better you feel but your legs and feet are complaining. You know you’re tired but you keep pressing. Then your phone rings. Your ringtone is loud, a deafening call to those damn machines in the dark. They’re coming for you now. You know it deep in your bones. Fucking phone won’t be quiet but you need the light.

He tells you about the time you fight with some older kids. It was big fight. Ten or twenty of you just going at it like children. Damn it felt great. You remember how it started. It started because someone had been muscling in on your corner of the playground. Must have been five or six bruises and one ugly cut lip before Mum stepped in. She patched you all up and punished everyone. It was a rivalry that lasted many years until your rivals were shipped out to God knows where. You wonder where they are now and whether they were better rested than you were right now.

“Hey, stay with me now,” Sagara reminds you, “You still there?”

“Yeah.”

“Good because I remember the time when those parents came over,” he starts again.

You remember that too. A bunch of high brow snooty looking types came by your orphanage. You think were gaijin or something. They looked around, inspecting each and every one of you like meat at a butcher’s. Tadakuni didn’t like that, Sagara didn’t like that but most of all you didn’t like that either. That’s when the pranking began. A wet floor here, a pan of flour there, oh the tools of mischief were many.

“Kyril,” he’s shouting, “Stay with me bro.”

You suppose it isn’t too much to stay a while and listen. Sagara was your best bud after all. You tell him you’re still with him.

“Reminds me of the time we tried to smuggle alcohol in doesn’t it?” he started.

“Yeah, I remember we had Tadakuni pull it off but then we got greedy,” you reply.

“Yeah, you got greedy and screwed us all over.”

“Totally. I screwed up,” you agree, “Man Aneue was pissed.”

“That she was,” another voice comes down the hall.

You turn your head to look but all you see was blinding light. Beep. Beep. It was just Tadakuni and his scooter.

“I screwed up,” you tell him.

“Yeah,” he wasn’t disagreeing as he hauls you up, “Yeah you did.”

Safe in the knowledge that you fucked up, you relax.

The time is dark, the weather is warm and the date remains unchanged.

You’re tucked up nice and tight in a warm bed. The sheets are blue with girlish designs. Words and voices seep in from a door left ajar.

“He’s not dead, just tired,” it was a female voice, “I’ll go check on him now.”

Then Nunotaba steps in to the room. Her smile is of mild relief though those eyes make it hard for you to tell. You’re too tired to get up but she doesn’t make you do anything save stay as you are. The rest of the crew file in and gather by the bedside as Nunotaba comes back with some water.

“おめでと, you are the first person to successfully evade a manhack swarm,” she starts, “Those things are designed to wear you down, mentally and physically. What you did was incredibly stupid but you managed to retrieve the data all the same so, ありがとう.”

Well despite your little incident in the tunnels it looks everything turned out okay.

“そう, before you leave we must talk about your payment,” Nunotaba continues, “I can wire some money, in instalments or all upfront, or I could offer something less material like knowledge, information or some small privileges. If it is beyond my power then I can at least facilitate it so that you may be able to attain by your own power.”

I don't think we necessarily need the money for anything thing, so I would suggest leaving it at her owing us a future, might come in handy in the future, unless someone has something else in mind.

“A favour? When you still owe me one?” Nunotaba asks you, “おもしろい, well then, a favour for the future it is. We will owe each other one thing. Of course your friends will also be rewarded at their efforts.”

“Well I’ll have the same as Kyril just a small favour,” Sagara starts, “And I’m cashing in right now, can you go out with me?”

Nunotaba snorts as if in derision.

“はい, let me get my coat,” she answers, “As your attending physician Kyril Torikov, I suggest you stay in that bed until we return.”

She then grabs Sagara by the collar and drags him out.

“He thinks he’s scored but boy is he in for a surprise,” Tadakuni snickers to himself.

“How so?” Kyousuke asks.

“Well for one, she’s really in to BL. She even draws some of it herself.”

“What? No way,” Kyousuke doesn’t believe it.

“Is the first thing you do when you enter a room is to look for some porn?” you ask

“Yes why?” he doesn’t seem apologetic, “Wanna have a look?”

Well you were curious you had to admit. It’s not like you had something personal against BL despite it not really being your cup of tea. Tadakuni only smiles smugly as he hands you a manuscript and excuses himself. Something about not needing to read it twice. That leaves you and Kyousuke to delve in to this mysterious and forbidden realm.

To be honest it wasn’t that bad, Nunotaba definitely has the talent to make it as a normal mangaka if she tried really. That is until Kyousuke utters those immortal words,

“Hey doesn’t this guy look like Kamijou?”

Your brain stops in it tracks. Come to think of it, the main character looks vaguely foreign, sort of like, you.

“Holy shit she’s drawn porn of you and Kamijou,” Kyousuke erupts in to laughter.

The small corner of your mind that has processed this information wonders if this was the result of being friends with the unluckiest guy in the world. Your next though is that misery loves company and that he deserves to suffer the same fate.

Episode 16 End. I’m good to go for an interlude.

You are Nunotaba Shinobu and you are a very, very rotten girl. Try as you might you can’t actually get the fact that Kyril Torikov, your current gopher, was having a get together with his male friends out of your head. It’s driving you to very painful bouts of arousal just thinking of the full on sausage fest that could result. You’re drooling again you realise and not just from your mouth.

In fact, the latest work that you’ve published to the net has no longer satisfied you. The accumulated filth generated by Rotten Girls of Academy City has foamed up past their waists and they look up to you and cry for, “more,” and you look down at them with glee and promise, “yes.” However, you must not be hasty. The proper materials need to be research and the intelligence should be gathered. Thus you shall,

There was no need to sit and stare at a monitor all day. This matter required physicality, more specifically a woman’s touch. Thus you resolved to conduct in situ research. It was fruitful though at times it did make your knees weak from the ideas that beset you. Take for example Kyril’s best friend, a comatose by the name of Sagara. You’ve seen the records and interviewed the doctors. He apparently saved Kyril’s live at the potential cost of his own. You could work with this.

Kyril sought solace in Kamijou because of it. Yes, you can the tragedy now. His gruff and tough exterior a mere façade to hide the pain of having his best friend torn from his life. You think this is worthy of a flashback, when they were merely young children experimenting on their own. Their small frames belying their precocious exploration. To see that ripped away from him, oh how wondrous. Best of all that was merely one of many. What about say, the dashing young rogue known as Tadakuni?

He is,

Well why play against type to begin with? His body was effeminate, his eyes shifty and his Ability was perfect set up for a night time visit. Night crawling with Tadakuni, Temptation made form, an incubus who sought not women but men. And Kyril, poor hapless Kyril would be his victim. He would resist, he would struggle but in time, he would learn. Learn that it was alright to let loose. To surrender all control and let himself be lead on. The short but violent night was nothing but the vestiges of a dream and the true culprit forever hidden from his view. All he would see is the friendly Tadakuni but never the other side of the coin.

Similarly there was also his other friend Nakazawa. On one hand he had his public face, a man who had a predilection for older women but really, who was he fooling? Certainly it wasn’t himself. He had only had an apparent preference because that was exactly the opposite of his desires. The shame of liking young men his age driven in to him by society was the cause. Then along comes Kyril, or should it be Kamijou, the possibilities were endless. Anyone who could come in to drag him, crying in shame and horror, out of the closet and in to the bedroom. The torrid affair and the acceptance of his new companion was simply icing on the cake. The last one, Kyousuke was harder to place.

Hell you’ve played it safe for most of this so you might as well take a break from tradition and go for something radically different. You were going to go full violence with this, a completely unstable and psychological wreck hidden underneath a thin veneer of civility. The fact that he played the viola only added to the Hannibal Lecter of BL that you were concocting. Violence, with or without weapons, would be his modus operandi. A favourite was the gun, a symbol of man and his virility.

His ‘friends’ would never see it coming. His presence in their midst but a mask for his current obsession and when struck they would be cry and begging for mercy. Both of which he had little to give. It was only when he had finished or exhausted himself would the tables be turned. He would squeal and obey like a sow in heat. Yes, you think this was a most fruitful field observation. It was now time to commit your ideas to the drawing board and your only regret was the speed at which you could draw.

Interlude end. Shout out to that one Anon who wanted more /y/ in QTG. We’ll see each other on Tuesday. Twitter with the details.
