Welcome to Academy City. The time is morning, the weather is horrific and the date is probably August 1.

You are Kyril Torikov, ‘Level 2’ Telekinetic Child Error and you are hiding under the sheets of a certain Nunotaba Shinobu. You were brought here when you apparently fainted running around in Academy City’s under-city. The stress and physical exertion from successfully evading your robotic pursuers were almost too much for you. That’s not the reason you are hiding however.

As it turns out, your employer, impromptu physician and host was apparently in to boy’s love. Not that you had anything against that particular proclivity it was just that her inspiration happened to be you and your friend Touma. You’re not sure how she got your dimensions relatively accurately, slightly exaggerated as the medium was, and in all fairness you’re not sure you want to know.

“おはいよお, it is time to get up,” Nunotaba calls from her living room.

Reluctantly you get up and crawl up to her dining table. She is having toast and is reading a newspaper.

“そお, as the subject of my art I would like some feedback,” she doesn’t lower the newspaper.

You’re pretty sure she’s talking about the yaoi. What is your opinion of being the main character of a homoerotic work of fiction?

Your friends would never let you live it down. They were going to remind you and Touma constantly about it. Thus your only recourse was to have them sink to your level. After all the jeering would stop if you were all equal. You also wanted a bit of revenge too.

“You’re going to include them right?” you ask Nunotaba.

She just smiles like a child caught in the act.

“No wait, don’t tell me, you already have,” you conclude.

It’s hard to know what to feel when she’s already gone that far ahead of you. Thus you ask another question.

“Do I get a cut of the profits?”

“あっ, the works are meant for,” she pauses, “private use. Besides, some foreigner will scan it and upload it to Sadpanda or other such sites anyway.”

The less said the better you think.

“そいえば, you should probably leave now,” now she’s chasing you out, “I’m not much in to voyeurism.”

Ushering you out on knocked-knees, you find yourself outside of Nunotaba’s dorm. The time is definitely morning, the weather is promising and the date is definitely August 1. You decide to head back to your dorm seeing as you probably need a shower and a change of clothes. At the entrance you discover that you have mail; three items in fact. Which one do you choose to open first?

Tossing the other two items on the table, you gut the girly envelope with a kitchen knife. You really didn’t take the time to appreciate its soft green design nor the light leafy scent that normal paper should not possess. Inside you find a missive addressed to you. Thankfully it wasn’t a confession of love or anything remotely like it. The letter is from Kaoru and it is written in stiff formal language. Either she didn’t know how to write casual Japanese letters or this was truly a serious matter.

“Dear Kyril Torikov,
It has come to my attention that various dangerous elements have been creeping in to Academy City as of yesterday evening. According to the Academy City authority it is a problem that is utterly complicated for those involved. While I am able to resolve the incident I have been informed that the Anglicans and the Roman Catholic Church will be sending their own specialists to deal with the root cause. This whoever leaves the symptoms of the problem to run amok and thus I too shall be drawing upon some external help. My request is to ask whether it is possible for you to provide temporary accommodation for my guest until the matter is resolved. I would appreciate your reply as soon as possible.

Sincerely yours,
Jaswinder Kaur”

How quaint. You probably should call her. It did say ASAP after all. The rest of your mail sits idly on the table.

No reason why you couldn’t do two things at once? Your phone had a speaker mode for a reason. Dialling up Kaoru, you start on the wrapping material. The package is addressed to you alright and it’s from Komoe-sensei. Thus you reason that it contains some reading material that could aid you in Ability development. Kaoru picks up,

“Torikov-san I appreciate your timeliness but I’m afraid I am currently hanging upside down out of an 18-wheeler cab while trying to defuse an electronic device. The truck in question is almost twice over the speed limit and is carrying hydrazine. I’d appreciate if you called back in an hour.”

She then hangs up.

Oh well that’s that. Turning your attention back to the package’s contents, there were three door stoppers. It was extra credit according to Komoe-sensei so you didn’t have to finish them all before summer ended. The three books were,

NEWTON: The Deadliest Son of a Bitch, someone has scrawled “…in SPACE” on the cover
Minds, Memories and Multitasking
The Art of Approximation

Well you didn’t need to get started right away but if you did you reckon you could finish one in about a week if you devoted your entire free time to the task. That said you still had the post card to read.

The last of your mail was a post card. It had no return address though it was clearly delivered to you. There’s no postage either. The front of the card has a vista of Academy City. If it were posted on an imageboard someone would probably caption it with, “Hard Science up in here,” or, “It’s science bitches.” The text is not written, instead it is a bunch of glued on letter from a magazine. Classic trick that.

“To whom it may concern,
You have been cordially invited to THIEF. To accept this invitation, simply burn this post card with a modern safety match.
Yours truly,
The Fifth

P.S. This is a standing invitation that can be accepted at any time provided you still have this post card.”

THIEF, you’re not sure what that stands for but the acronym was pretty self-explanatory. This also brings to fore the reason behind burning the post card. Was it some kind of inhaled anaesthetic or was it a simply signal? What you’re sure of however is that you probably wouldn’t be able to find out about these guys through normal means. Then again you’re leery of getting kidnapped for the third time now.

You had another forty-five minutes until Kaoru was done with her adventure and had to be called again so you could read a book or pretend to be a rape victim and take a cold shower or something.

Well you suppose you could leaf through them for a few moments each to get a brief idea of what each book was about before you decide to tackle one for real. It’s totally not procrastinating. Picking up one at random to start, you dive in.

The Art of Approximation is really more of a book on how measurement is conducted. It goes in to great detail of the history of measurement and the establishment of Le Système international d’unités. Then it actually discusses how various things are measured and the conversions. The final part is actually a quick and dirty guide to conversions and approximating certain things, which was really the only interesting part of the book.

NEWTON, despite its provocative name is actually an applied physics textbook. You’re pretty sure no one would read it if it was just called Applied Physic Textbook Ten Millionth Edition. There’s plenty of math involved, variables, irrational numbers, vectors, matrices and equations. It’s the kind of thing that gives you a head ache really.

The last one, Minds, Memories and Multi-tasking is a three-parter. Each of them deals with part of the title. It starts off with cognitive psychology then hits memory before ending on attention, awareness and how we as humans divide and partition them. It’s a bit more accessible and readable in that regard but the subject matter is a bit above your level of understanding at the moment.

Before you know it the time to call Kaoru has come.

Thankfully she doesn’t seem to be in the middle of crisis when you ring her up next.

“Torikov-san thank you for your patience,” she sounds like she’s running, “I believe I’m a bit busy right now but I should be available around noon. How does lunch at a josePH’s sound?”

“That sounds fine,” you agree, “I’ll give you a call if something comes up.”

After all that business the other day you almost forgot you were running around in what was Academy City’s tunnel system. Almost because you now notice how much you actually smell. It wasn’t very pleasant but at least it was proof that Nunotaba didn’t strip you down for research purposes. There’s a thought not worth thinking off ever again and you let the water wash it away.

Except it doesn’t go away. The thought stays with as much as the fact you’re the star of a homoerotic manga. It takes a while but you belatedly realise that it’ll never go away. Like a crumpled up piece of paper, you’ll never be a clean sheet again. You’re dirty in way that you can’t even begin to describe. Thus you resolve to never tell anyone else ever. Not as long as you breathe anyway. It’s a secret you’re taking with you to the grave.

To distract you from these horrific thoughts you think of other things. Things that are more pleasant like say Asuka.

There’s still an hour until lunch. Better not get any food then you suppose.

Well there wasn’t really anything to do in your room save study and you could do that anywhere really. Thus you head out early, taking Minds, Memories and Multi-tasking with you. Thankfully you’ve had the good sense to call ahead to figure out at which josePH’s you were meeting at. There was some time before Kaoru arrived so you pull out the book and start reading.

The introductory chapter was really more about the stimulus-response loop than anything else. It is interesting to note that it also talked a little about how perception worked. You don’t get much farther than that when Kaoru arrives. Her clothes are scuffed and dirty and her hair is a bit tangled up.

“Torikov-san, thank you for meeting up as soon as you could,” she greets and orders a masala chai, “We have much to talk about.”

“You said something about dangerous elements entering the city?”

“Indeed.”

Unfurling her styled up hair, she retrieves a comb which she passes through her surprisingly lengthy hair twice.

“If we’re to talk of that subject however then you must allow me to brush your hair twice, otherwise we’ll have to find a more secure means of communicatin.”

“Huh and what does that do?”

“Makes it so only the two of us can understand what we are saying to the other,” she replies, “Well?”

Let her comb your hair?

It was probably nothing. It’s not like she was going to erase your memories again or anything. Even if she did you could get Touma to pat you on the head again and be right as rain. After muttering something in what you assume is her native language, she combs your head twice. You don’t feel any different but now Kaoru seems to be in a better mood. Her voice definitely has a melodic tinge you’ve never heard before as she finishes.

“Do you normally sound like that?” you ask.

“Only when I’m speaking Punjabi,” she replies, “I’ve just temporarily enlightened you with the knowledge of my mother tongue and the ability to speak it.”

“Wait so I’m speaking in Punjab now?”

“Admittedly I may have influenced your ability to speak Japanese for the duration of the spell,” was all she was going to admit, “But that is not the important topic that I wish to discuss with you.”

“Right, something about a guest and a dangerous thing in the city,” you recall.

If the dangerous things were the bad news the guest was the good then you’d rather start with the bad first. It’s quite understandable then that Kaoru frowns slightly as he leans on her knuckles.

“They’re well known monsters who were once humans like us,” she starts, “There is power in breaking and upholding taboo and there are men and women who have gone through great lengths to achieve such power. Frankly their cruelties were often much worse than the taboo which they broke. One such man was Vlad III the Prince of Wallachia.”

“Never heard of him,” you admit.

“Also known as Dracula.”
