You are Michael Grove, formerly male, formerly not a magical girl, and formerly did not have some sort of wizard in a wheelchair in your living room.

You seem to be particularly serenely irate about the whole situation, though frankly with what’s been happening you think to yourself you’ve been holding together rather well.

Atropos, the aged-looking magi who had just been wheeled in, gestures for you and Cassie to sit down – the girl who you had wished to profess your love to, who’d helped you when you’d abruptly changed gender, even when you’d burst out of her closet – and you do so on the sofa together. Behind you, the sound of scratch-scratch of small claws on a cage could be heard, your new pet rabbit pawing on the side softly. You could be resting now, or looking into your pet, or chatting with Cassie. Or even trying to get more information from Jean, though you’d hear more from the magi himself, you tell yourself. No need to get angry for unnecessary reasons. But there was an unseasonably strong sense of upset over the whole matter.

“This is, ah, Atropos-“ Jean’s introduction to break the silence is cut off by a wizened hand being raised. The old man leans forwards, peering at Cassie, then you, muttering something quietly under his breath as he stares. At last he speaks clearly, voice raspy and amused.

“You seem… angry.”
>>
>>30801075
awwwww yeeeeaaaaaaa
>>
The statement was, broadly speaking, correct. You open your mouth to respond – And Cassie cuts in with level, clipped words.
“I think we’ve a right to be angry, Mr Atropos. My- one of my best friends has been turned into a girl! That’s hardly normal, and I can’t even begin to think of how many problems it’s going to cause her! –Him!”

“You’re… both angry, then. …Right?” You answer Atropos’ question with a nod, and he smiles thinly back. “Good. Magic just fucked up your life. Remember that when making your choices.”

There were many things you wanted to ask the magi before you, and many more things you wanted to do after getting him out of the house – but, you settle in with a disgruntled expression on your face, expecting this to take a long while.

“Jean,” he starts with, leaning back into the steel wheelchair seat, “has said she’s told you of the basics of magic. Aether, a strange energy from beyond this world, mixed with desire, people’s thoughts – mix together, and create magic based on what those people want. A potentially hugely powerful force, that can do just about anything that you want.”

“Ways to control it: in the past, there were two main schools of thought – the mage’s way, and the witch’s way. Mages bound all this magic together in ritual and pomp and circumstance, and made it so that they could train themselves to use magic by matching their desire to their actions, to make specific spells occur. Long, hard training, with lots of mental attention and very little power produced at the end of it, but one has finesse and control.”

>>
“-That reminds me. Jean, go set up in the kitchen, will you?” He holds up a thick marker pen, and Jean – the magical girl who’d gotten you into this whole mess hesitating, then taking it, moving into the kitchen again. Leaving the three of you alone.”

“Witches, the opposite.” The magi ticked off each topic on his fingers, holding them up as he sped through the explanation. “They gave themselves fully into their desires, and wrought whatever fancy they wanted into existence. Dancing with devils, skyclad maidens and all that rubbish. This was bad, since unrestrained magic brings more aether into the world, and it could spread like all sorts of plague. And magi came in to stop it. Arrogant twats who still were better than the witches they burned, crazed people who were overcome by their own carnal lusts and who twisted people and reality about them until they slipped up, one by one. There aren’t really any more witches around, not any more.”

“Demons – the unrestrained desires of people, inside of you. Normally they are just part of who you are, but when infused by magic, the dark side of people show up, manifest. Things hidden away, their true wishes and wants bubbling to the surface. Not always bad, but when they manifest, they create a barrier around themselves – a Nightmare – and then inside them if someone were to stumble in, who knows what might happen to them? And they leak residual aether, too, which makes more people into demons. It’s a chain effect, and demons need to be stopped.”

“Which brings us to you, and Jean over there.” He reaches out, snags a comic you'd left out off the top of the table beside him. “Magical girls. Sort of like witches, but those who are controlled by a magi’s contract, having their powers bound into artifacts, into particular terms and conditions. People who have been infected by magic can be turned into Magical girls by magi and other magical girls. They’re utilized to fight back against Demons, and save people from magic. Heroes, kind of. Do you like heroes, Michael?” His tone was sardonic. Particularly annoying when he simply casts the graphic novel aside again.

“-Where are you headed with this?" You manage your best level headed response, letting him carry on.

The magi laughs, at that, a hoarse, dark chuckle that sounds more like choking than amusement “Straight to the point. Good.”

“Magical girls can do powerful magic, but even with their boundaries, it is often poorly controlled, and so your powers are limited to a certain area often, an element of your choosing. And I as a magi don’t have enough raw power to change you back. And that means, the only real way to sort out your problems is with Wishes. Jean told you about them, yes?”

You nod again, a bit uncertainly. “Defeating Demons gives you Demon essences… gather enough of them, and you can use the crystallized magic to grant you a wish… right?”

“Correct! That’s the only real surefire way of carrying out magic. Your foremost desires, along with a magi’s guiding hand, and the magic of, say, ten demons- one can often get the right results. If it’s what you really want. Of course, gathering them is easier said than done. If you want to get your manhood and your old face back? You’d need a wish, or a ridiculously good plastic surgeon. Want to stop being a magical girl? You’ll want a wish for that. And, that’s why I’m telling you all this. Simply put, I can’t help you without some sort of power.”

Cassie leans in, here, almost shouting. “But Jean told Michael that-“

“-That what, she’d make everything better? Have you seen the girl recently? She’s a mess. Right now, she’s barely holding together to scrape enough demon essences to survive for her own wish, let alone donate them to someone else. Magic screws up people’s lives. It’s the first piece of advice I’ve told you, and I’d tell it to you again if I thought you’d listen. “ For the first time, Atropos speaks to Cassie directly, staring her down. “You’re.. Carrie Winters, yes? Jean said she’s one of her closest friends. Do you want her to throw away her own life to try and make this boy’s life right?”

It takes a few seconds for Cassie’s eyes to falter, turning back down again. “…No.”

[x]Could I become a magi, too?

“Of course. You might even be a good one – you’ll need about ten years of study, and first you’ll need to wish your magical girl contract away. It all seems to come down to that, doesn’t it?”

“As for what happened to you, there’s a… fairly reasonable explanation for what exactly happened. I’d need to check, but it mainly comes down to Jean’s preferences.”

From outside, there’s a slight crash of something breaking, and hurried footsteps.

“You see, Jean’s a le-“ He cuts off for a moment as all three of you turn to Jean, ashen faced and holding out her wand at the ground, trembling.

“Do you want to continue, Jean? Tell them everything? Or do you want to leave the boy you transformed in suspense?” The magical girl has tears in her eyes as she glances wildly between Atropos, Cassie and yourself – lingering with guilt and shame and – envy? across the two of you before she retreats back out of sight.
>>
>>30802664

Cassie is on her feet before you can act, and her hand reaches out, slapping the magi across the face.
“How DARE you reveal something like- like-“ She raises her hand again, the wizened man looking back at her with flinty eyes, the red mark spreading across the pale skin.

[ ] Cassie, no – violence isn’t the answer here. He did tell us only what we asked.
[ ] Hold up, girl, there’s no need to hit the guy – he’s up to something, even if I’m not sure what.

[X] Cassie, he deserves it, but I need you to calm down a bit
[X] Verbally lambast the magi - Jean did save our life in that Nightmare, he went too far here.

Now might be a good time for Atropos to mention that, no, you can willingly leave a Nightmare at anytime, assuming that wasn't revised out of the setting.

[x] Hold up, girl, there’s no need to hit the guy – he’s up to something, even if I’m not sure what.

It’s with a suspicious look to Atropos that you take Cassie’s arm in your hands, holding her – she’s surprisingly strong but she calms after a couple of seconds in your grasp. With a worried look to the kitchen, she sits again on the sofa, slouching.
“There’s no need to.. Even if Jean did, she transformed me because of that, doesn’t mean you have to…” Your voice trails off as you try to work out why he’d reveal something like that so harshly.”

“The woman’s stronger than you think. And it’s best to get these things out the way.” He speaks quietly here. “There’s more I think she’ll be willing to share with you now she’s had some secrets exposed, and frankly if you did decide to hate her because of just that little fact, I don’t think it’d have been worth her trying to keep you as friends, anyway. She’s got her own hangups to deal with, and the faster she gets over it the less likely she’s going to get herself killed. You can console her later on and hate me because of it, if it makes you feel any better.”

“Now, magical girls. Even if you don’t want to be one, you’d better know about them for self defense if nothing else. Magical girls fight Demons. There’s two- well, three – ways of defeating demons.” Here, Atropos pulls a wad of paper out from his pocket, handing it over as he gingerly massages his cheek.

“Firstly, you can simply overwhelm the demon with magical energy and firepower, a brute force attack. It works, but sometimes you might not want to do that. Second, deny the demon enough. Denying a desire will make such a demon exhaust it’s magical powers, and self destruct. Cut away anything that would allow it to fulfil its wishes, its desires, and strip its power away until it can do nothing else – and then it will die on its own. And lastly, if it’s a particularly benign demon, you can give the demon what it wants. Sometimes the answer’s as simple as giving them a bit of a hug, and then they just pass on. –I wouldn’t suggest this for every one you come across, for obvious reasons.

“Now, there are two types of demons – possessed demons, and manifested demons. Both make Nightmares that you can track down. Possessed Demons are those who haven’t left the body of their host – they warp the mind and body, and try to act out their impulses. They can spread limited amounts of aether in this form, which makes them risky. Of course, since they’re still possessing someone, there’s more risk to the person who’s being possessed, and trying to blast away the demon will kill the person there too. Not exactly a heroic option, but sometimes they’re better off dead than twisted into something horrific. Denying the demon’s desires may cut off that desire in the person afterwards, leaving them indifferent or disliking wanting such a thing again, and giving the demon what it wishes will encourage the desire once you’ve cleaned them of their magic. Understand?”
>>
>>30803829
He nods again as you slowly take in the knowledge. Was that why Jean had wanted to keep the bunnies – Inaba – from waking up? That they’d not want to sleep again?

“The second kind of demon – a manifested demon. Blow it up, deny it, whatever. They’re unnatural creations, pure and simple. Destroy them if you can, but be wary, they can be far more terrible than the possessed ones. Destroy the nightmare from outside if you are in any doubt whatsoever – you might not get any demon essence from doing so, but you’ll be better off than being caught. If you want to risk it, you can always try to leave a Nightmare by getting as far away from the Demon as you can, then breaking it open with a magic blow, and escaping. But while you can normally fight then, manifested demons don’t always play fair. You’ve been warned.”

Atropos takes a breath, his breathing raspy once more. “You’ve already used some magic – I can sense the taint of aether about you. Not much. Using magic can have certain effects – sometimes, when too much builds up, it can release spontaneously, affecting you or around you depending on your desires. Sometimes, if you’re lucky, it’s temporary. If you let too much magic build up, some Changes might be permanent. And too much magic…”

“Witches. Magical girls who’ve used up too much magic, or given in to too much of their Shadow. I’ve not told you about your Shadow, have I? –Well, just a note on Witches, first. Don’t fight them. Just run, if you can. You won’t be a match for them unless you are very, very lucky. Call me or Jean, and we’ll try to get to you as soon as possible. I haven’t seen a witch for a very long time, but-“ The man in the wheelchair shudders – “you don’t want to see them.”

“Shadows, then – have you heard that little voice in your head wanting to do something that you probably wouldn’t do normally?”

No.
>>
>>30803871
...What does yes mean?
>>
>>30803847 (You)

“Yes, I- yes.” Wait, what? “It’s… it sounds like me.” Wait, that’s me? You can hear it now, distinctly. Puzzled, confused.

“Your shadow is what guides your magic. It’s your id, the part of you that wants you to do something. You can deal with it to gain access to more powerful magic, if you listen to it and do what it says from time to time. It should be helpful, if you’re lucky. It is you, after all. Just be warned – listening it too much can lead to more easy Changes occurring, and if there ever comes a time where you can’t hear it any more – it means that it’s become you entirely again, and you’ve just turned into a full witch. And then I or Jean’ll have to come up and clean the mess.”

The talk seems to have left Atropos exhausted, as he slumps into a silence. Eventually speaking up as he looks across the pair of you.

“So. A horribly dangerous job, with permanent consequences if you mess up. But you’ll be helping people, and it’s the only way to fix your body or get out of all these magic problems, and you can help save some people’s lives from being ruined.”

“There’s already a magical girl around here who doesn’t want any part of this fighting, and I don’t blame her for it. But I could use another person to help give Jean a hand in protecting this region. What do you think? Any questions? Do you want to become a fully contracted magical girl, or just stay as you are now?”

Even if I turn this offer down I'll end up having to deal with magic and demons in my life, I won't be able to stop myself from trying to help the people they're hurting, and not all of them will be as nice as the sleepy bunnies.

So I may as well accept the contract so I'm actually prepared."
>>
>>30804021

Or is everyone like Jean, just bumbling about on their own?

>>
[x]Yes.
“Just a couple of questions -“ Atropos nods, waiting. “Are there… magical.. ugh, magical boys? Magical warlocks or something? And, is there some sort of… support group? Or are they like Jean, running around on their own?”

“Yes, though they’re rarer. Not to be sexist, but females tend to make better magical girls. And, generally, magical girls tend to group together to form their own teams. Running around solo on your own’s a bad way of going about things, and it’s honestly why I’d prefer if you could help Jean out with it. All the same, too many magical girls in one place is no good. Over the longer term people tend to rub each other the wrong way, and the overuse of magic causes more demons to be created – teams of four to five are a good number. The cities around here each have their own little coteries that I look after.”

You think it over, looking at Cassie, her expression worried, back at the Magi. And at last you nod.
“I’m magical already, right? I can’t just stand back and not expect to get drawn in anyway. Might as well be prepared by taking the full contract, right?”

Atropos places his hands on the wheelchair armrests, dragging himself onto his feet. Struggling to stand as he places his hand across the wad of paper down on the table.
“Then, to complete the formal contract, I grant you the powers that you may use to strike down demons or creatures of magic should you need to protect the world, I grant you the control to hold yourself firm in this task.”

“I sense much rage in you. Kindness, too, and magic. Each will serve you well. You have heard the foes a magical girl will face, and know of the ways to defeat them. Each magical girl has a signature tool to use to help channel their magic, and each has an element to work their magic upon the world. You must choose both, now, an implement that suits your nature, and an element of your choice.”

“Choose wisely.”

The sword shoot gravity beams, so really it's an unwieldy wand most of the time?
>>
>>30805136
I think that vote is kind of bullshit.

Gravity got two votes, as did Luck, while Fire had three.
>>
>>30805239
Ah, well then Gravity has three votes, which gives it a tie with Fire.

I'm just not really sure if simplifying it to two votes is really the best thing, given they only have the absolute minimum of consensus.
>>
>>30805258
>>30805283
well, according to the secure vote, gravity has 6 votes to fire's 2. Not close at all.
>>
>>30805297
You mean the secure vote where Fire wasn't even an option?
>>
>>30805301
whoops, thats actually blood, not fire. lol
>>
>>30805297
Fire wasn't even an option on that one, you can't really compare it like that.

I think the best way to do a vote like this is to put up 4 or 5 options labeled 1-5, and have everyone vote for their favorite two.

Just make sure the voting is standardized, always putting the lower number first.
>>
Honestly I think we should choose element, THEN weapon, not both at once.
>>
>>30805380
This.
>>
>>30805380
Agreed. Moving forward this votes probably shouldn't be combined.
>>
>>30805380
I feel like we should have more than just two options for element as well.

[x] Gravity
[x] Swords
As Atropos holds out the contract to you, you reach out, press your hands down upon it. The paper glows a deep blue as – something rises out of it, drawing the ornate guard of a sword from within. You can feel the tug of magic within you, familiar now, focused now in capability. The weight of the weapon felt in your hands without even touching it as the thin blade comes free of the paper, as you swing the double-sided blade effortlessly through the air. And in your grasp it flashes, the paper pulling away from the desk and scattering around you, fluttering, hovering in the air. Completing you.

“Congratulations, Michael Groves. You are now a Magical Girl, sworn to protect against the evils of magic. May you use your powers well.” –And with that, it is done. The sword feels as though it was designed perfectly for you, and you marvel at it before sliding it away, out of sight somehow – the knowledge on how to draw it forth and put it away as simple to you as flicking a switch.

“Michael… what on earth are you wearing?” You look down for a moment at Cassies’ question, catching the sight of Atropos’ solemn face – and see the same outfit as before – your magical girl outfit? Corset and leather biker jacket and miniskirt and knee-high boots and high socks and black spats… what on earth was this sort of get-up. You look despairingly at Atropos and he shrugs.

“Looks like a good fit on you?” is all he murmurs as he sits down, as the contract re-gathers itself atop the table. “-Carrie, why don’t you go talk to Jean for a moment? I’m sure she could use some comfort, and I would want to talk to Michael alone.” If anything, his voice is even more hoarse than before.
>>
>>30805603

The girl by your side reaches out and squeezes your hand, before at last taking off for the kitchen. After she’s gone, Atropos had settled once more.
“One last thing. Try not to make magic too widely known. It’s far too dangerous for it to spread unchecked, and too many people will think it’s a good thing before trying it out. – I’ve got some ability to help you out at your local school, with various bribes and magic, but it’ll at most make people not really focus on why you’re a girl now. Would you prefer that, or a cover story of some kind? I’d leave it to you how you sort that out with your family, of course, but everyone else – including the girl over there – could be made to think you’re someone new. Would you prefer any of those options?”

You dismiss having Cassie forget, with her being one of the only people in the know already, but -

[x] Make it so that people don’t focus on why I’m female now.
A whole host of questions pop into your head as you indicate your preference for just making sure no-one is particularly bothered – though you personally should be bothered still. The loss of your manhood definitely should be bothering to you. He nods, though pauses at the particular exclamation there.
-A-anyway! You ask about the other magi, about how many there are, and if there were any problems with moving around in other people’s areas. The answer is not reassuring –

“Thirty, maybe forty magi worldwide. I’m in charge of a few states around here - the actual number’s less important than the number of places where aether is seeping into the world. And-“ here, he had looked at you closely. “There are some magi who are less harsh than me, but they’re few and far between. Some magi like to control their magical girls particularly closely, with horribly binding contracts. Don’t rely on them for help, and if you need anything, try getting hold of me. I may hate magic, but you’re one of my responsibilities now.” Shaken, you nod, just staring at the grim faced man in the chair.
“More magical implements? It’s possible to get hold of other empowering items, but I wouldn’t recommend it. The whole point about implements and elements is to limit your power to a few fields, rather than make them broad. With more implements and more mastery, your ability grows, but so does the risk of your powers overtaking you. And that would not be a happy end at all.”
>>
>>30806828

“As for magical creatures, some things like that exist. Mostly mutations of existing creatures due to desire or witches or magical girls wishing them into being. Usually creatures don’t have very powerful demons, so they’re not too much of a bother. –I’d not be too happy about you trying to actually make demons yourself, but for animals? They’re not too much of a problem, mostly, so I wouldn’t come down on you too hard if it were to happen.” He had frowned, at this, and grumbled as he started to wheel himself towards the kitchen. “If I had my way, you’d not need any fun things to happen – far too much trouble. If you were just to get on with the job, it’d save everyone a lot of heartache in the long run.”

Inside the kitchen, lines of arcane circles and markings had been traced along the floor, the walls, even the tables. And amidst the group of it was a sobbing Jean, and Cassie, holding the girl in her arms. They quiet as soon as the pair of you enter, and Jean bows deeply, mutely as Cassie steps away, towards you.

“Is that everything? You’ve got my number, give me a call if you need help urgently and I’ll try to be there within fifteen minutes. Now, you’ll need to back out of the room – “

Cassie waves as the flash of teleportation hurts your eyes, the magic runes in marker pen vanishing, burning off in unfelt heat. And both of them were gone.

You and Cassie smile awkwardly as you step out of the kitchen, unsure of what comes next. It’s quite late – if Cassie were to need to get home, she’d have to dash to get the last bus. But, there were things you had planned on doing.

[ ] Let Cassie get home – she needed to get back to her parents to let them know she’s fine, and you had to see a rabbit about itself.
[ ] Cassie being here and knowing about your new pet should be the first thing on your mind, and perhaps she could help with the bunnygirl?
[ ] The bunny could wait. For now, you had a lot of things to talk over with Cassie.
[ ] Cassie was ok with staying over, right? Perhaps she wouldn’t mind staying in our bed!

Let's go with Cassie. I like that we're finally moving away from the classic names for this quest.
>>
[x] Cassie being here and knowing about your new pet should be the first thing on your mind, and perhaps she could help with the bunnygirl?

You couldn’t take your mind off her. And given that that was the case…

“Long day, huh. –Cassie, could you help me out with one last thing tonight? It’s something a bit magical..”

There’s a snort from her, and she flops herself back atop the couch in a rather inelegant manner. “Something ‘magical’? Oh, wow. Is that an, um, an invitation? I, ah…”

In response, you pull open your bunny’s cage and let it pounce upon you – cradling it in both arms as it curls against your bosom is a warm, pleasant feel as you carry it over between the two of you, letting it slide down to rest on the sofa itself. “…A bunny?” she asks, now thoroughly confused.

“Magical girls need some sort of cute magical familiar, right? So, I bought this bunny…” Now that you mentioned it, you did feel a bit foolish on picking it up so fast. But… you couldn’t put that radiant smile out of your head.

“And, I thought I’d… make it magical, somehow. Atropos did say there was some way of doing it, though he wasn’t very clear…” Cassie reaches out, and pets the little fluffy creature, and she’s smitten by the time the bunny rolls under her touch to press its soft fur against her fingertips.

“She’s gorgeous…” You definitely agree, and so does the bunny, as it rubs its fur against your supporting hand. Close to both it and Cassie alike.

“I think… I think I need to use this demon’s essence, somehow..?” You draw the inky black sphere to the bunny, and brush it against the rabbit’s back. And wait a second. And another. And then –
>>
>>30808015

Writhing and squirming between the two of you, the rabbit’s body elongates, the fur shrinking back into its – into her skin. Stretching out of her, blue tinged hair as her figure changes from an animal to a human’s. The little squeal changing into a drawn out moan as she throws her arms around you.

You don’t know how her clothes were formed - the little tight fitting corset, the bunnygirl outfit, but are grateful for it, with Cassie sitting on the other side of her. To Cassie's credit (and quite possibly lack of self-preservation instincts) she does not let go, still patting the be-uniformed girl’s head. Her two fluffy, long ears had returned already just the way you remember it, and her grasp around your waist returns, the happy little “eeeeee-!” returns to you.

“Master, master-! You chose me after all! I knew you would be happy with me I just knew it! And I’m sorry I couldn’t show up before and I don’t know what you did but I can move around while big again-! And I’m so so happy that you’re with me now-!” Her cheerfulness is infectious, and you smile in return, reaching to squeeze the girl against you. Here, she’s slightly shorter than even your small frame, just enough fluff to cover her body – though you notice her hands and legs were no longer wild paws and leggy things but actual hands and shoes that you reach out to touch.

“And is this... Master’s Mistress?” she asks, turning to face the one who’s hand you’d been watching pat constantly on the head.

“…What.” Is all Cassie’s able to say, smiling yet dumbfounded alike still blissfully happy with the soft pats she gives the bunny. In the end, she seems to have taken to the new addition rather well. At least, that’s what you tell yourself with a jealous twinge as she hugs around her back. “After hearing about the other things you and Atropos were talking about, this is kind of tame, actually. At least it’s not an entirely new reality or something.”

And so the three of you sit on the couch together, laughing and hugging each other and relaxing and eventually sleeping; until the morning came.

Breaker quest, session end.
