Darkness.

It’s cloying, suffocating.

It’s been days since you’ve seen the light, days since you and your brother were kidnapped, days since you were shoved in this metal box with tens if not dozens of others.

You, and Marcus had been playing a simple game of phase-ball in the agricultural fields outside of the small colony of Trimel when they had come for you. Men in yellow and white armor, gunning down your parents and anyone who dared to resist in the colony, among the attackers was your family doctor, a woman you trusted as much as your own mother. She pointed in your direction, “There they are.”. With those three words your fate had been sealed as you were brought onto a shuttle, bound and gagged until forced into a container.

That of course, as already said, had been days ago. Or maybe weeks, hell, maybe it was just hours. There was no way to tell time in utter darkness. The pain in your stomach was the only indicator of time passing. Your only companions were the moans of the other children, and the stench of refuse and what you assumed were the dead.

“Open it up.” A muffled voice sounded behind the door. The light blinded you as the container was opened, you forced to your feet, and lined up near the others. Desperately you looked for your brother among the small crowd of children.

And you found him, just as they placed him into the body bag.
>>
(cont.)

Tears tracked down your face as the soldiers paraded you through showers, stripped to nothing along with the other children. Abashed as your were the restraints kept you from covering yourself, or rather protecting yourself from the near-boiling water. Upon exiting you felt far more burnt than you ever did clean.

They clothed you in an ill-fitting, rough cloth singlet, and forced you and the other into a tightly packed dormitory, beds lining the space and every one of them filled with others you assumed had already been there, many others sleeping or conversing in other spaces on the floor, nobody paid your group any mind.

What do you do?

Not wanting to struggle for a spot, and both mentally and emotionally exhausted you find an empty area near the corner. You break down into tears as you think of your dead family. Everyone you have cared for in life is dead, even the people who knew your name was Eric are probably gone as well. “Why did this happen to me!?” You cry into your hands, “I’m 15, I did nothing wrong to nobody” Besides for the few angry glares at the noise, nobody seems to pay attention to you, and that is perfectly fine with you.

With tears still streaking down your face you survey your room. A small clock sits behind a steel cage above the door, showing 0400 in glaring red light. A window showing into what seems to be a rudimentary play-ground/exercise area covers the wall farthest from you, and a door leading to the bathroom on the closest.

“Hello,” a small boy whispers as he sits next to you. He seems to be one of the ones who’s been here for awhile, as his hair is dry and face is scarred.

He says nothing, but simply leans back against the wall near you.

“Hi.” You say to the kid. He’s obviously younger than you, possibly 12 or 13. He has a look that would look more at home on a corpse than a child. No emotion remains there.

“Hello. I’m 76.” He mutters back to you. A small smirk plays onto his face that you actually acknowledged him, he must not get much positive attention around this place.

“Eric.” You return. The kid’s face is almost shocked. “You actually talked to me without hitting me… That’s a first…” He mutters, the smirk growing in a tired-smile. “But your name isn’t Eric. It’s 23.” He urgently whispers to you. “You’re 23. You’re 23. You’re 23. Don’t let the jards hear you say Eric. You’re 23.” The kid’s odd pronunciation of guard confuses you, but the crazed look he gets when mentioning the number on your clothing outright scares you.

"Okay..okay... You're 76, I'm 23. Are names not allowed? Why do the guards care?" You say to him to calm him down.

“The jards don’t want you to have a name 23. The jards just want you to listen to them. Do what they say 23, you’ll be safe. The jards are your parents now, and your parents named you 23.” He whispers in an urgent tone without the crazed look he held prior. He places a hand on your knee, and you notice the many scars and unhealed bruises covering his arm. “You’ll be safe 23. You’l-“ He stops.

The previous buzz of quiet conversation among the children does the same as 2 soldiers and a man with a clip-board walk in. “You, you, you, you, and you!” The doctor yells as he points at you and several others from your original group. The others jump to their feet and you follow suit, 76 simply mutters an ominous ‘good luck’ as you walk away, following the soldiers.

Going down the hallway and through a door the humid air of the outdoors hits you full-force, almost immediately eliciting a sheen of sweat to cover your body. You’ve been led to the area beyond the window from earlier, and are sat down in a bench that sits outside of a small ring of barriers. Blood stains the ground within the ring, along with dried splatters along the barriers. One of the guards places a loose collar around your neck, something you had seen on many of the others in the dorm.

“Subject 23 and 84, enter the ring.” The clipboard-holder commands, thick goggles cover his eyes and the back of his bald head. Standing in the ring opposite from you is a girl around 76’s age. Frail, and barely able to walk as she holds onto the edge of the barrier.

“This will be a simple test. Attack your opponent and you will be rewarded, abstain and you will be punished. This is a fight to the death.”

“But she can barely walk! What kind of place is this?!” You scream at the doctor, refusing to budge from your area of the ring. The girl simply coughs, not moving an inch besides for her shaking.

“I’ll give you one more warning. Kill her.” He commands, making a small note on his board. You shake your head, you would never attack this girl. The doctor pulls up his omni-tool and enters a short command.

You instantly collapse in agony as every nerve screams in pain. Everything from the soles of your feet to the tips of your ears feels as if a needle is being jammed in, your eyes are flooded with red light and your ears with the white-noise of intense pain. You can’t even scream due to the pain you feel in your throat and lungs, and almost as soon as ithad started the pain ends.

“Attack. You cannot resist.” You cry in the fetal position, weighing your options. "Either you kill her or we will force you."

You stand up, your fight or flight response causing adrenaline to start filling your system with a rage you’ve never known before, only a dichotomy of the girl is clear in your pain-hazed mind. She lives and you suffer, she dies and you survive. You charge the girl, fear plastering her face causing you to pause for several seconds before drawing your fist back, not knowing how to kill someone easily.

A sickening crunch is both felt and heard as it connects with the girls face, blood flying back and splattering your face from her nose, eyes, and mouth, and you feel a slight prick from the collar followed by joy and warmth. She screeches in agony on the ground and you follow her down as you pummel her again and again, her cries being replaced by the sound of fists hitting meat, of teeth cracking, of the girl’s skull shattering as you hit her again and again. Each blow fills you with ecstasy and happiness due to the substance from the collar, a feeling of joy attached to it, a feeling you used to have when you played with your brother and other children from the village.

Terrified cries are heard from the children brought outside with you, shocking you out of your reverie.
Beneath you, the frail girl is nothing more than a fleshy mass of blood, bone, and skin attached to a body inside a suit labeled ‘84’. You vomit to the side of her corpse, the feeling of the drug not able to counteract the disgust you feel at the sight of what you did. Tears mix with the blood, her blood, that covers your face.

The guards drag you out of the arena and lead you into the showers. Stripping off the suit you stand under the near boiling water, scrubbing the blood from your body.

From now on I'll post an update, leave 2 minutes for discussion, then post options, with 5 minutes to get a majority.

You stare at the drain as the remainder of 84’s blood washes down the drain in a transparent red color, even the steam filling the room is unable to mask the smell of iron from your nose despite how hard you scrub. The guard left the shower-area, giving you time to collect yourself and your thoughts. “It was either me or her… I had to do it…” You mutter to the ground. Your fists sting in the water, scratched and bruised from the fragments of the girl’s teeth and skull under your fists. You wonder what they’ll do with the body… Probably throw it in the same grave as Marcus…

You search the room for your singlet as it is no longer on the floor where you stripped it off. A fresher singlet lays on a hook outside of the room, next to the ‘23’ a single red star that wasn’t there before adorns the cloth. You trod bare-foot down the nearly empty hallway and out the doors where you had been dragged out of earlier. The same humidity strikes you, and you take in your surroundings.

In the center of the area is a large tree that reaches the ceiling, some 300 ft. high, a web of red beams and razor-wire fills the gap leading out into open air. In its shade are several children of varying ages, chatting in the quiet way you’ve seen so often in this place. A running track lines the perimeter of the large space, a single runner running its length. Inside the arena kids are fighting, not with the ferocity to kill but certainly to harm. The site makes you sick to your stomach.

>>Approach the group underneath the tree
As much as going the isolationist route might make us feel better in the short-term, it's better for us to get out in front of it and make it clear that we're regretting what they made us do.

That, and given the quality of life we've seen so far, I can't imagine wasting our energy just running to the point of exhaustion is such a good idea right away.

Regret's a perfectly fine word for it. There might even be a niggling, rationalizing part of us that DOESN'T feel guilty over what we did, wanting to push the culpability for actually killing her onto the man (and by extension the group at large) who shock-collared us and then drugged us to enjoy doing it.
>>
Attempting to look approachable you pull your head up from looking at the ground and start treading towards the group standing in the shade of the tree.

As you get closer, you notice the group is composed of one burly looking male labeled '30', a tall but lanky girl '165' and a paler short boy with '90', followed by a star.

Everyone in the group besides 90 shrink back against your approach, whereas 90 extends his hand with an oddly warm smile. "Number's 90, nice to meet you 23." You take his hand firmly with your sweaty grip.

"You're one of the first ones to ever take it so far, so quickly. Shit was like crazy brutal!" He laughs while clapping you on the back, "When you first walked in we's thought you were going to be one of the test's, but man you showed us."

"Tests? What does that mean?" You ask, a look of shock unable to be concealed at the praise you're receiving form the boy.

"Tests. Like that girl you beat in the arena. Useless for anything but tests by the doc'." he laughs. The other two are frightened by the two of you hitting it off so well, fear blatantly on display.

Kind of want to get the other two people involved in this conversation somehow; not sure murderpraise is going to sit so well with us at the moment given what we just went through.

90 really wants to talk about how cool and edgy we are now that we beat somebody to death, but that's pretty far removed from what I'd imagine we're comfortable with.

>>30810476

“So, um, yeah.” You mutter before clearing your throat, “How’d you get your star?” You manage to say without mumbling. 90 gives an ear-to-ear grin at the question, placing his hands on his hips.

“When we first got here, probably two or three weeks before y’all came around, I was placed in the arena with this kid who was supposed to be a test. I didn’t even hesitate to start beating the shit out of his scrawny little kid ass before he started glowing blue and pushed me off. I managed to give ‘im a good kick in the face before the guards dragged us apart. SO I ende dup not getting my star..” He angrily groans at the memory, “Oh but I ended up earning it back. Let’s just say I was told to find the boy later and ‘teach him a lesson’, and boy did I ever.” He winks and makes a sick thrusting motion with his hips. It was pretty clear he raped the kid, the thought making you nearly vomit, and 90 obviously thought the fact that he did was a good thing. You bite your tongue and clench your fist from hitting him, it’s too soon for another fight.

“What is the point of this place anyways?” You say through nearly-clenched teeth.

“To find the strongest.” He simply says, flexing his bicep, “You’ll hear about it in classes.”

We haven't interacted with them at all; assuming they're his friends and would back him up even when they're pretty clearly dreading his presence doesn't seem like the right conclusion to make.

Your curiosity outweighs your anger just enough for you to ask, “He glowed blue? What?” 90 looks kind of incredulous, as do the girl and boy behind him.

“You mean you’ve never heard of biotics?” He asks, giggling at your ignorance.

“Nah, I was … taken … from an agri-world that supplied worlds near the edge of the terminus systems, we didn’t get much news there.” You quickly explain. 90 looks like he’s about to suffocate from laughing so hard. Wiping tears from his eyes he begins to explain.

“Biotics are these freaky fuckers who can move things with their minds, lift ‘em, pull ‘em, throw ‘em, crush ‘em, anything they want. And when they get angry or scared, they grow more powerful. So when I made lil biotic boy my bitch he glowed blue alright!” He laughs again at his own bravado. “I think that’s what they’re looking for here, everyone here has glowed blue atleast once, but nobody as much as that little bitch.”

>>
>>30811566

Looking past 90, you observe 30, the tall burly male, and 165, the thin and tall girl. "Who are you?" You direct the question to them, who both flinch at being addressed. Surprisingly, 90 says nothing but gestures for them to answer.

"I'm 165," the girl murmurs, "I'm 90's... Close friend." 90 winks at you, you cringe on the inside.

"And I'm 30." a shockingly deep voice announces. "90's older brother." His voice is nowhere near as timid as 165's, but it is obvious he holds a healthy amount of fear for his murderous little brother. The two don't say much as 90 gives you a thumbs up, "They're my posse of sorts." he curtly explains.

"And what are these classes I keep hearing about? What exactly are we being taught?"

All three scowl.

"The classes are nothing more than an attempt to say we're important to the human cause." the girl whimpers angrily, "Fucking waste of time too," 90 adds, "and afterwards you get to take a bunch of tests which is so much fucking fun!" He sarcastically exclaims just as an announcer calls over a loud-speaker, summoning 90 to return to the dorms. He slaps you on the back and jogs to the door, 165 and 30 en route with him.

Your bare-feet slap into the soft-sun warmed plastic of the track, sweat pouring down your sides and your breathing becoming labored. The thoughts of 90 raping the kid is forcing imagery into your head, making you ill, and thus making you run faster to escape the thoughts.

‘I have to get out of here’ you think to yourself, ‘I have to get out or else I’m going to turn into a creature like that psychopath’ Your breathing is extremely labored at this point, having made several fast laps around the track. Every so often you stop to catch your breath, time flying by as you settle into a rhythm of senseless running.

That is, of course, until the announcer tells the compound to get to class.

I think here is a good stopping point for the thread tonight. I made a twitter for updates: https://twitter.com/TheGeneralQM follow me for times. Since it’s spring break I’m running atleast 1 thread a day for the week, and will settle into a different schedule afterwards. The thread will be up 20:00 central American time at the latest.

How was this for my first time QM’ing?

>He's been nice to us so far and answered our questions without telling us to bend over in return.
This is more or less because he's operating under the belief that we're a hard motherfucker, where really it was just an extremely swingy fight or flight response.

>And if he didn't do what the doc told him, they probably would have shocked him with maximum pain like they did us.
Even without all the other shit he told us, the fact that he didn't even a push is probably a pretty good indicator of his disposition.

I mostly just want to liberate his posse; it's the sort of unambiguously "good" thing you can actually do without having Big Brother come down on you like a ton of bricks. We're going to keep being compelled into doing terrible things to people who probably don't deserve it, so trying to alleviate a guilty conscience rather than slipping down the slope toward full-on misanthropy is probably a good idea.

Save some of our genuine attempts to resist authority (if any) for when we're being made to do distasteful things to people we've actually come to like. Making a stand just for the sake of morality and FIGHTING THE POWER seems like a big, upstanding thing to do, but really it's just going to get us killed or marginalized and leave a bunch of scumbags like 90 as the only people left with any sort of clout.

Pretty reasonable job. Should probably post your twitter in /qtg/ so you can be added to the directory.
