It's the morning of the third day. At dawn, tomorrow, you need to have everything ready for the Three River's attack on the fey of Tianna's swampland, and be present at Azure Lake for the strategy meeting.

You already recruited Dancing Smoke, the island's volcano goddess; A court of water elementals; And two pirate ships for a total of about 50 people. One, the Bloodshark, is led by a Realm expatriate called Rubel Sareni, but the other, the Black Eye, is still captain-less (since the previous captain, Yagate White-Tooth, has been eaten by Tia, your lunar husbando)
You also took in as a servant Regis, a dirty but adorable street urchin, by saving him from being stoned for theft and promising him a job, a uniform and three meals a day.

Now, you need to plan for the day with Rubel and Tia's help.

Here in the pirate haven of Freeport there's a captain you still haven't contacted, Iohannes Quint. There are possibly more allies and forces you can add to your ranks, but you don't have much time left. Mikahil is also somewhere around town, either busydoing his own brand of shady stuff, or catching up on sleep.

What should you do first?

>Check if the Black Eye has elected a new captain and bring them up to speed on the situation.
>Talk with Rubel (about what?)
>Talk with Tia (about what?)
>Search for Mikahil.
>Search for Iohannes Quint.
>Try and take over the entire village.
>Try and gather iron weapons for your men and ships.
>Try and contact another spirit or god and persuade it to help you.
>Immediately head back to Tianna.
>Immediately head to Azure Lake.
>Explore the sea and other islands.

>Who are we?
Maka, an exiled noble recently Exalted as a Zenith-caste Solar. She's in the western city of Tianna as a guest of queen Amata (DB), an old friend. Abyssals are targeting the city for conquest, Lintha pirates have infiltrated it with spies and agents, and half the island is controlled by paranoid Lunars. Fun times.

>Solar? Zenith? I don't know Exalted...
This quest is as newbie-friendly as possible, and I want it to work as a newbie's intro to Exalted. If you have ANY question, ask in thread. For the setting, google "1d4chan exalted".

>Archive?
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=zenith

>System?
Dicepool-like system. When performing an action, everyone rolls 1d10 when posting. the first X rolls are considered, where X is equal to attribute + ability. Yes, this means that the more people are posting, the stronger Maka is, up to a limit of her attribute + ability.

>XP?
Attributes cost [current score x5] xp. Abilities cost [current score x3] xp, except Zenith costing [(current score x3) -1]. Charms cost 10 xp, except for Zenith-based charms (related to charisma and physical/mental fortitude) which cost 8 xp. At the end of every "session" (thread) you will be presented with a list of possible acquisitions.

Incidentally, movement speed:
If you move alone with Tia as a vehicle, you can fly one hex in 5 minutes.

Ships are about one hex in 15 minutes.

Land movement is 3 hex in 2 hours.

where about are we and where do we need to get to?

we can find the other captain and some iron weapons and send the ships off, then search for Mikahil and catch up to the ships and beat them to where we're going
>>
>>30828419

Freeport is in the bay of the western island with six forested hexes.
Tianna is the large city.
Azure Lake is the only lake on the map.
The wyld area is the swamp.
>>
>>30828511
So its roughly ~63 hexes for our ships to get to the river leading to the lake, which would mean 945 minutes, or 15.75 hours for them to reach the closest water entrance to the lake, and if they are going to leave after we search for the last captain and get some iron weapons for them, add 4-6 hours, meaning almost a day for them to get there.

For us to travel via Tia-back its 32 hexes, which would be 160 minutes/2.3 hours, so if we're not too concerned about having our ships there for the meeting and having them arrive afterwards, we could spend today gathering more men and weapons and travel in the afternoon to get to the lake by nighttime if we're in a hurry.

Also, where the fuck are all the other players?

Arming 2 crews with iron weapons is a bit tricky, i was hoping that we'd have an easier time getting them at Tianna rather than at Freeport, that and the men can go to the rally point while us Exalted can travel through the night. With crunch time so close i expect us work through the night.

Maybe we can do the recruiting of more gods and spirits during the night as well.
>>
>>30828809
There could potentially be one or two very minor gods that live in a very old tree or tiny pond or whatever near the fae-zone.

Also, Maka could try to appeal to the local terrestrial burueacrats for some help. ie, "hey I bet the fae are really fucking shit up and making your job harder so hey if you either ignore what I'm up to or lend a hand that'll make my job of murdering them dead easier"

"yeah cool, business partners or w/e"

I don't expect to lug sixty sets of armor and arms around, but a few dozen iron tipped spears would be doable and greatly helpful.

There a mention of sail gods sometime ago, maybe they can help reduce the travel time of our ships?

Gods of sail, directly, are more of a celestial thing.

Also probably beyond maka's purview.

The terrestrial gods that lurk around the west are not pleasant sapient-creatures.

"First of all." You state as you dismount the moored ship together with Tia and Rubel. "We need to find Mikahil."

"Mikahil is that sleep-deprived-looking man you were travelling with, right?" Rubel asks.

You nod. "He's very good at hiding, and he's... not really with me. He acts on his own a lot, and has his own plans. I lost sight of him yesterday, and I have no idea where he went. He's also very good at hiding and being subtle."

"Sounds like a hard person to find." Notes Rubel. "Isn't it more likely that HE will find US?"

"I don't know, should we just walk around town calling his name loudly so he knows we're looking for him?" You wonder. "Or just ask around about him, he'd probably realize."

"I'll send some of my men around to ask for someone with that name, saying that you're looking for him. If he's as good as you say, he'll get the message." The captain suggests.

After about a hour spent looking for the elusive Eclipse, he comes and meet you at a carrot stall at the farmer's market, where you were asking people if anyone had seen him.

"You're up early." He points out. He looks a bit more well-rested than usual, though not by much. You wonder if it's just his face that has that naturally tired look.

"I was doing the last few things before heading back to the main island and meeting the others in Azure Lake. Are you sure you don't want to join us?" You offer.

"I'm not much of a warrior. If this were a diplomatic mission, my Caste's blessing would be really useful to keep the fey at bay, I imagine. But in war? I'll pass. I have other business to attend to off-island."

"What did you do yesterday, anyway?" You wonder.

As a response, he pulls out from under his cloak a large leather bag and tosses it to you.

You catch it. It's heavy and noisy.

"I did some deals. Some trading, some barter. Just to keep myself busy while I wasn't catching up some sleep."

You peek into it. Stuffed together without order or reason, you find a large amount of Guild-minted silver coins of various age and denominations, some of Tianna's domestic copper and silver coins and paper scrip, a few semiprecious gemstones, and several colorful cowrie shells.

You give its contents a quick count. It's not a fantastic amount of money, but it's a nice sum.

"Consider it my contribute to the war effort."

"...Thank you, Mika." You heft the bag and sling it over your shoulder.

"It's okay." He turns and leaves. "You still have some to learn, Maka, but you're a good person. I hope we'll meet again. I wouldn't mind working with you once I sort out my own stuff."

"Likewise." You tell him while he walks away, disappearing in the crowd. "Good luck. For everything."

Once he's gone, Tia gives you a "what now" kind of look. She's snacking on a roasted insects shishkebab-like thing she probably bought at a food stall.

At least, you hope she bought it.

"...let's try and find out where this Quint guy is." You fell her.

"On his ship. He's about to set sail, I heard." *munch*

"...Why didn't you tell me earlier?" You sigh, hurrying up towards the docks. She trails behind you.

"Didn't ask." *crunch* "He probably thought too many weird things were happening in Freeport with you around."

"...Can't really blame him." You note.

A few minutes later, you reach the Fell-Star, moored at the docks. The crew, all armed and on the deck, stares you down.

"Uh... good morning." You try and break the ice.

No response.

"...I need to talk to your captain, Iohannes Quint."

Looks like they're giving you the silent treatment.

"...Look, I don't know what's the idea you have of me by this point, but I can guarantee, I'm not some kind of monster. I just want to talk business."

You see a man with dreadlocks and a long brown coat walk up from below deck. "Captain!" Someone calls him. "Don't listen to her!" "She's a witch! A fey! A monster!"

"Shut the hell up, you guys." He says uncerimoniously to them, jumping down into the pier and walking up to you and Tia. "Business, you say?"

Nonsanctioned piracy is going to end in some time around this Island. And if you are really bent on getting away you could make a run for it. Or if you are smart you can join up. I already have two ships. I will have more and clear up the waters around Tianna and Three Rivers.

And we don't really need to seduce him. His crew is skittish but showing that they are better of working with us is probably going to look lot better than trying our feminine wiles that might be constructed as bewitching him.
Also now we have some money to pay the crews, even if there is not much loot from the Fae nobles. But that being said loot from fae nobles is going to be a good drive to incentive for them on working with us on this.

The crew starts murmuring. He seems impressed as well.

"Yours would be the third." You point out.

"Short-term or long-term?" You reply.

"In that order."

"Tomorrow I have a meeting with an alliance of other Exalted, gods and elementals." You explain.

"We're kicking the Fair Folk out of here. In exchange, the barbarian tribes of the northern side of the island will enter a mutual defense pact with the city of Tianna."

"Big changes." He nods to himself. "So you're working for Tianna?"

Actually regarding Gem, we could try to make her the volcano god around Gem without or before conquering Gem.

As a beachhead of sorts and in so doing planting a ally there. From that juncture we can decide weather we want gem or not since we then have the friendship of the main Vulcan there and if the piss us off we can have it erupt.

We would however need a disguise so we are not recognized as Maka, but else this is probably a good plan weather we want gem or not. Planting a ally there in such a way we have them with a gun to their head.

Eh, we should still probably take back queenship of Gem regardless.

But yes, if Dancing Smoke remains chief volcano goddess of both Tianna and Gem, we could easily communicate back and forth between temples in both cities, as long as Dancing Smoke is willing to pass messages.

And all of this can be done nice and easy from the Island paradise we are in, without bothering to set up a permanent residence in gem, just the initial trip .

There is only one course of action regarding Lintha, ever:

Extermination.

Let's not. We wasted way too much when we boarded Rubel's ship. Even with using MRE we have two sucesses here which might be enough to convince them. With MRE we would have four successes.

Moderately.

No. They're too dangerous to do anything other than sink.

Same story. Also, the Abyssals use an airship, not an actual ship.

>I've heard that Raksha are very rich, so how viable would a plan be where we finance our operations by raiding X-Com style.
Extremely. The Raksha should have a ton of Gossamer goods, which is strictly better than just about every other mundane material. Even their commoners' tools should fetch a MASSIVE price in Tianna, and if we can find some gossamer boots/gauntlets (which will, aesthetically, look like arm-length gloves and high heels, probably) they'll be strictly better than the mundane ones from Tianna.

Trying to recruit pirates with the promise of conquering Gem and paying them in gems is like trying to hire mercenaries in central Mongolia with the promise that one day, you'll go to America and find the fountain of youth
>>
Rolled 6

On the topic of Gossamer.

Gossamer is a material made of the dreams and emotions of mortals. Fair Folk mostly eat it (they need some every day not to unravel) but also use it to make things. You can have an armored dress woven out of the feeling a little girl got when her mom hugged her, or a blade edged in the panic of the moment right before waking up from a nightmare, for example.

Gossamer items have a smattering of +1's to their stats (in the core system) and can further be made Exceptional for some more +1's. This makes them almost (almost) as good as Artifact items. Gossamer armor, on the other hand, has no Fatigue or Mobility penalty, meaning you could have a light, hooded robe that protects you as well as heavy chain swathings, or a gentleman's suit whose soft leather protects like steel plates.

As I'm sure you can imagine, this is some valuable shit. It's borderline-artifact-tier stuff that mortals can use freely - cha-ching! What it also means is that, if we find any Gossamer boots/gloves while we're raiding them, we can probably use them as an upgrade to whatever we're using and look DAMN fine in the process.

In other words, please throw us arm-length gloves and thigh-high heels that function as gauntlets and iron boots during our war against the Fair Folk, Exaltedfag.

>>
>>30829974

>>
Rolled 5

>>30829941
>Or could we take over some Fae?
Probably not, and just keeping them alive would pretty much involve sacrificing humans to them to have their dreams/emotions/souls eaten.

There's only one way to take over the Fae and be able to trust them. You have to steal their Graces. You see, Fae don't have willpower/emotions/Virtues/souls like, you know, actual people do. They make magical tools - the Sword, the Cup, the Ring, the Staff, and the Heart graces - that serve the dual purpose of being a sweet tool and letting them run emotions basically as an emulator.

Taking one of their Graces renders you in control of that aspect of them. For example, stealing their Sword means they can't hurt anyone except on your order (that's their Valor). Stealing their Heart means they cease having free will or personal drives of any kind (that's their Willpower equivalent).

So, if we can find a Raksha and physically or trickily take, at the very least, their Sword/Heart Grace, we MIGHT be able to keep them around as a pet.

But honestly, at the end of the day, we should just kill the lot of them, loot all their gossamer, and consider it a DAMN good day to be rid of these soul-eating lovecraftian monsters from outside of reality.
>>
>>30829941

>>
Rolled 10

>>30829984
Oh, and in case people are worried that Maka might not know all this? It's actually common knowledge. Not in so clear of terms, mind you, but people know that, for example, getting a fairy to surrender his sword makes him helpless as far as fighting is concerned. That stealing their heart makes them your slave, and so forth.

It's included in basically every tale about them in the entire world, right alongside, "BITCH DO NOT FORGET SOME IRON. YOU WILL NEED IT." Mothers tell these stories to their kids as they fall asleep.

But for real, just kill the fuckers. Unless we're given a PERFECT opportunity to steal a Raksha's heart, don't even take the risk. These tricky fucks can turn things around on you SO quick, you should never give them a chance.
>>
>>30829984

You could also bind them though eclipse oaths. It also might be a way to keep people from murdering and the likes.

"Well, lots of things. There's the problem with the Abyssals." You start, gauging his reaction., To your surprise, he just nods.

"...Yes, I heard about their attack in Tianna. Dreadful stuff. I take it it was you the one who helped stopping them?" Quint asks.

You nod in reply. "Plus, you know, Lintha."

"Ugh." He groans. "I hate the Lintha."

"Join the club." You grin. "But really, my long-term plans involve two things." You extend one finger. "One: I plan to forge a nation here in the West."

He seems very interested. "...Here in Tianna? Or are you planning on ripping some of Wavecrest from the Feathered One and the Realm?"

"I'm still considering it." You reply, noting his reaction. "Do you have any suggestions?"

His gaze gets really serious. "Promise me one island of my choice as a fief and you will have my sword and my ship."

"That sounds like a personal... vendetta?" You wonder aloud.

"Is it important?" He replies. "What is your second plan?"

"...I plan on returning to Gem." You tell him. "If I will have the chance to."

"You're from Gem?"

"I was the queen of Gem. I wouldn't mind returning to that position." You understate with a smirk.

"Gem is far." He notes. "And hard to reach."

"That's why I don't have any definite plans for returning there. For now, my battle is here, in the West."

"...You'll have your fief. I'll see that you can get it. But can I ask you what's your problem with them?" You ask him. You sense a story behind this.

"They exiled me. Well. I exiled myself. It was either that or becoming very dead." He explains succinctly.

"Did something happen?"

He takes a deep sigh. "You'll find it boring. Besides, you don't really care about my problems. You're just curious."

"I do care." You point out.

"They chucked my wife in a volcano." He explains. "Mostly because the god was hungry for some more sacrifice and the jails were empty. They accused her of being a necromancer"

You hesitate a moment, before asking the next question. "...Was she?"

"Yes." He nods. "But I don't think that's a good excuse."

His ship's skull-and-crossbones flag takes on an entire new meaning.

"You want vengeance?" You ask.

"I want to go back home." He says sounding so, so very tired. "And I want to be sure that this sort of thing doesn't happen to anyone else." He adds.. His voice is about to break, but no other outward sign of distress breaks out of his hard, slightly-smug-looking face. "...And I want the head of that particular high priest on a pike and the god in question to be taught a lesson in some way, but I don't intend to go on a blood-soaked rampage beyond that."

No. The volcano god in question would be the god of one of the volcanoes on the islands that are officially part of Wavecrest. The Wavecrest Archipelago has an agreement with the volcano gods stating that they perform human sacrifice when the volcano gods demand it (usually they throw prisoners convicted of capital crimes in, but when the volcano gods are really angry they'll grab anyone who's in for anything, or just accuse people on trumped-up charges just to get a sacrifice) in exchange for the volcanoes not erupting and feeding the soil and farmland they need to support themselves.

If we want to stop human sacrifice in Wavecrest, we're going to have to figure out another way for the people there to feed themselves.

Are you certain we promised him an island off Tianna? Because it sure as hell seems we promised to give him a conquered island of Wavecrest, by the QM's given response.

The Wavecrest Archipelago proper is three fucking huge islands, if I remember right. I don't think he wants one of those.

"Don't worry." You reassure him. "I have a definite dislike for human sacrifice and upstart gods. Welcome to the team. Heck, tell you what. If you'll need a hand with that and I'll be able to assist, you can count on my help. If things get rowdy or dangerous, I can probably wrestle a volcano god down."

"You're either very sure of yourself, or very powerful." Is his reply.

"Or both."

"Or both." He nods, shaking your hand. "However, my crew is not on board just for my personal reasons. They'll expect good work and either good pay or good loot."

"For now I can't promise you anything. I'm not financially stable yet. But then, I've just arrived around these parts." You explain.

"If you can't guarantee a decent livelihood to my men, I can assure you that they will jump ship, figuratively or literally."

"I'm aware of that." You sigh. "I'll guarantee I'll make things work."

"Well, you're the one who can wrestle with gods. I'll trust your word for now, and my men will trust mine. The Fell-Star is yours. Your orders?"

"Stay in port for now. But be ready to set sail." You instruct him, pointing at the other two boats in the bay. "Together with the Black Eye and the Bloodshark. We have some business with the Fae tomorrow."

"Fighting the Fae is pretty crazy." He mumbles. "...Will there be loot?"

You pat his shoulder. "Only one way to find out is there?"

"Then it's not much different from regular piracy." He turns and heads back to the ship. "Keep me informed, missie."

Well, now you have all three ships of the area under your order. That's nice. You stop and think about it: that's about a hundred and fifty men, all fairly experienced seamen and fighters, and three boats equipped for combat and speed. Not a bad force to start from, if you add a volcano goddess and a court of water spirits to the mix.

You look at the sun. It's late morning, almost midday. You could stop with Tia for a quick meal at the open-air market, but what are you going to do in the afternoon?

Originally i disliked it because it made figuring out what you guys wanted harder, but the way i'm rolling with it now is that basically Maka's responses are non-binary whenever possible (i.e. you act as a mass of "voices in her head", or thoughts: she'll follow the strongest, but pay attention to all of them).

When the option is not binary, if you post multiple mutually exclusive choices, i'll act as if that's you saying "any one out of these X is ok with me, you get to pick" and act accordingly.

You hand the cash bag to Tia. "Tia, do me a favour."

Your Lunar mate, who has been following you silently up to now, grabs it. "What do I need to do with this?"

For a moment you begin wondering if entrusting her with this is a good idea. Tia is someone you can trust blindly, but is not what you'd call a "people person".

Still, this is not rocket surgery. "I need you to find all the iron you can around Freeport. Have it turned into weapons. Swords, and tips for arrows and ballistas. Check with the weaponsmiths and blacksmiths, and offer to buy any iron tool off anyone to be turned into weaponry."

"Will do." She simply replies, and turns around and walks off.

Tia stops, as if she had suddenly realized she forgot something. Turns around, heads back, gives you a kiss, and then goes back on her way.

Alright, you can only hope for the best now. Now you'll have to visit the Black Eye and see who the new captain is.

[...]

"We haven't agreed on a man for the job yet, miss Maka." One of the misfits of the pirate ship's crew explains, clearly still intimidated by you.

"What's taking you so long?" You're on a timetable, and these people are stalling for time.

"It's that... well, captain Yagate..."

"He told you to pick a new captain, didn't he?"

"But... He was really afraid of mutinies, you see. So, well... There aren't many people who want to be captain now..."

You sigh. So that's how it is: He got rid of anyone with leadership skills and ambition in his crew, and made himself indispensable while keeping everyone in line with brutal discipline. Not a bad system, but your crew only works well with you in command, and loses any initiative and ability to look after themselves. You're pretty sure they didn't immediately disperse only because you stepped in.

You don't have time to let these people sort themselves out. And you don't have time to learn who among them is the best choice.

It's tasty. I was just reading it the other night. Anon was right in that Creation gets turned into a giant cannon if you consider Creation to be where all the Exalts are (who lost the Primordial War and are now fleeing into the Void). In truth, they're all living in Autochthonia (which is comparable to Creation in size) and have been re-purposing the Great Maker into world-weapon. True and proper Creation is called the Spiral now, and is a tiered constellation of worlds more fabulous and terrible than vanilla Creation. Oh, and TUS is now the Tyrant Sun hunting your asses down for his master, Theion.

So, anon was right in that it was a creation turned into a cannon. Just not Creation with the capital C.

They are now turning Autocthon into a hyper-weaponized spaceship while trying to keep one step ahead of the Primordials in a Wyld that is outer space.

"You know what?" You raise your voice to be heard above the din and chaos aboard the Black Eye, and everyone falls silent and turns to face you. "Not to violate your pirate traditions or whatever, but, as your new employer, I kind of need you to be battle-ready in less than twelve hours, and don't have time for this. How about I appoint a temporary captain from the crew of the Bloodshark? He'd lead you for the duration of the oncoming operation, then step down for whoever you chose to vote - unless you pick him, of course."

Silence.

"...Well?" You urge their reply. They murmur in assent. It's weird looking at this mass of burly, muscular, testosterone-laden brigands being so confused and indecisive without their leader.

You do hope they get over it quickly, though.

You head back to the nearby Bloodshark and explain the situation to Rubel.

"Do you have anyone who could take that position?"

"Well... I thought the Black Eye's crew was a mass of murdering lunatics, but if they're as pliable as you say without leadership..." He scratches his head, thinking about it.

"Someone who knows how to handle a ship and a crew, with leadership, personality, initiative." You explain. "Your first mate, maybe?"

"Alexei?" He wonders. "You know him?"

You try and recall details about him. You have to admit you haven't paid a lot of attention to him: you mostly dealt directly with Rubel, and never had much time to spend socializing with the crew anyway. Was he the guy ranting about Storm Mothers yesterday? You have some vague memories about it...

The captain goes and fetch you a men from his crew. Evidently this Alexei, his first mate. Not being dressed as colorfully as Rubel is, he mostly blends in the background when he's around, but now you give him a better look.

He's young, or looks young in any case, and for a moment you're almost fooled into doubting he might be a woman in drag (something that happens from time to time, if some of the stories you've heard about the West have to be believed). But then you convince yourself that he's not... or, if he is, she's amazingly good at it. Or isn't he? She? Whatever?

...Given that you have your doubts, you decide it's just best to default to the assumption that he's male, being on a ship and all.

"Uh, you were asking for me, miss Kama?"

"Her name is Maka, Alexei." Saren slaps him in the head.

"Ow. Sorry... Maka. We didn't-"

"Yes, we didn't have a chance to talk before now. I'm sorry, I'd like to get to know every one of you, but that takes time we don't have right now." You decide to cut short without being impolite. "The Black Eye doesn't have a captain. We need someone to lead it for now. Once our campaign against the Fey is over, you'll return to the Bloodshark, unless the crew of the Black Eye accepts you as your new captain and you're willing to stay."

"...A chance for a command? For me?" He seems surprised. He looks at Rubel, who nods in assent.

"Do your best, Alexei. I know you're a good deckhand, a good navigator, and a good first officer. You know all the tricks. And while you lack some experience, you'll make it. I'm sure you'll be a good captain."

"...The crew of the Black Eye scares me a bit." He comments. "But I'll take the chance."

"Excellent." You congratulate him. "Now go take care of it! Ah, and spread the word to all three ships: Tia is trying to scrounge iron weaponry around Freeport. If everything works fine, by tomorrow all ships and crews will have a complement of weaponry effective against the Fair Folk."

"That's good to hear. I think every ship has its own little stock of iron weapons for emergencies, or, at least, mine does." Rubel nods as Alexei leaps offboard and runs across the docks to his new command. "But every bit helps."

"No, no, 'course not. Besides, where would I find it? Anyway, Yer husband or wife or whatever took care of that?"

You leave the Bloodshark and go look for Tia. It doesn't take long for you to find her, walking aroudn the marketplace area of Freeport with that bag of money slung over her back.

You're surprised that no one thought of trying to pickpocket her, but then you remind yourself that she also has a pretty huge sword made of an obviously supernatural metal and she carries it openly with herself at all times.

But you're also a bit surprised to see she's carrying a backpack or rather, a woven basket meant to be worn as a backpack, full of coal. She's all dirty with coal and soot herself. She stops when she notices you.

"...Tia?"

"Yes?"

"...What the heck are you doing?"

"Helping!" He points in the direction of a nearby house, a blacksmith's shop judging by the noise and smoke and hammering. she heads in and drops the basket to one side. You follow.

Inside, there's a lot of work going on. Master craftsmen, apprentices, laborers working bellows and carrying stuff left and right. They're working hard.

You're pretty amazed. "...How much did you spend to get this kind of response?" You ask, glancing at the barrels full of (badly-crafted, but it's what you get for a rush job) swords and spear and arrow tips cooling in water.

She rummages in the bag. You hear it clinking. "I have absolutely no idea. About half of this stuff?"

Of course she has no idea how money works, you think to yourself. It's amazing that she didn't get scammed somehow. Maybe... "...What did you tell them?"

"That everyone should help because there's about to be a Fair Folk attack." She replies with a large, winning smile.

"...A Fair Folk attack?"

"Yes! As in, there is going to be an attack, and it will involve the Fair Folk!"

You don't know whether you should facepalm, or scold her, or praise her.

"By tomorrow at dawn, working all night, we'll have enough to arm all three crews with melee weapons, and a large stock of arrows and ballista bolts. We have some people down at the docks making iron nails and plates for warding the keels too." Says one oddly well-dressed kid helping out with the bellows. H's wearing a comically-oversized-for-him apron in an effort to keep his clothes clean.

It takes you a second to recognize Regis. That well-cleaned and groomed and dressed, he's almost another person. "...Wow. Tia picked your clothes?"

"Yep!" He's obviously inordinately proud. "She said I'll need to make a good show if I want to be your butler!"

"And you're doing a good job here, too." You pat him. "Well then. Things are taking care of themselves here. What are we going to do now? It's almost evening..."

"Let's see. Tia?"

"Yes?" She asks, patting some of her dust off her beautiful dress. You notice it comes off cleanly.

"...How many people can you carry around while flying? Can you lug around me, Regis, Rubel, Alexei and Quint?"

"Probably." She responds nonchalantly. "We're going to the moot?"

"The moot?" You lift an eyebrow, unfamiliar with the term.

"Sorry, you don't know. A moot is just Silver Society slang for a meeting. A council. What we're having at Azure Lake is a moot."

"...Silver Society?" You cock your head to the side.

"Lunars." She explains succinctly. "Well, those Lunars who go to moots and socialize with other Lunars."

"That seems a rather recursive definition." You comment. "But nevermind. Let's do this, then. I'm sorry to ask you to carry all this weight..."

"It's nothing, really."

"We...we're going to fly?" Regis seems to be having trouble to wrap his head around the idea.

"Tia is. She's going to turn into a bird and fly us to the main island where we'll meet other people." You briefly explain to him, and he gives you a definite "are you serious?" look. You try not to laugh.

"Sure am." She smiles at him, and waves a hand slowly in front of his eyes. The hand and arm begins to cover in feathers under his amazed eyes, before she snaps her fingers and it all turns back to normal. "You'll see."

"Do you think I should find new clothes, too? Get a change of look? Wear something fancier?" You ask Tia, unsure of how a moot works.

She looks at you for a few seconds. "...Maka. A moot is very, very informal. Your dress is probably way too fancy for it." She shrugs. "Not like anyone there's going to care all that much."

Feeling a bit cheated out of the chance to have a wardrobe change of your own, you nod in response. "Well, let's round up the captains and get going, then."

We should really get Dawn 3. We already got Hardship Surviving Spirit, and we're about to start a tactical meeting (Dawn) and improving Dawn will give us access to new, better combat charms.

It's the best choice.

>Will Dawn 3 open up access to dance-fighting Charms?
Probably. We also already know it opens up access to Tiger-Warrior Training Technique, alongside actual combat charms. It's a pretty sweet level of Dawn, all things considered.
>>
>>30834551
We don't have any more choices left, do we? We could just go until we're at Azure Lake and bed down until morning.

>>
>>30834551

Generally speaking, I want to go down this route: D2->D3->D4->Z5->D5 which would give us access to all the best combat charms and protection charms. It is not particularly expensive either, just about 38 xp, which is the cost 4-5 charms.

EF said in thread 4.5 that with Z5 we could get a charm that would permanently give us 2 damage per attack.
>>
Yep, Dawn 3 would see us through the best for the next 1-3, maybe 4 forseeable sessions. We going to be discussing how to best beat the shit out of fairies, and then executing said fairy-beating plan while directing troops and punching. We need Dawn 3. Also a couple iron knuckledusters.

Good, because we've already commissioned arm-length gauntlets and thigh-high high-heeled boots and greaves from a place in Tianna.

The downside is that they're probably made from the finest bronze.

The plus side is that we can probably get the knuckles, toes, and heels tipped in iron easily enough.

Closing here then.
2 XP (base)
1 XP (recruited Iohannes Quint)

Given 7 XP, you can buy up any one ability you have at 2 and bring it up at 3.

Since that seems to be the discussion at hand, yes, Dawn 3 would give you the option of buying War charms, including Tiger Warrior Training Technique.

As a matter of fact, since you didn't fight much (except a scuffle with Yagate and a night with Tia, and Tia was definitely rougher), I think that, if things keep going on the trainy/planny/commandy side, your 3 charm picks for Dawn are going to likely be War-type charms.

Of course it's also true that you're not likely to gain 10 XP BEFORE the campaign against the fae is well underway, so your choices are either save up to 10 now and buy a War charm soon, or buy Dawn 3, unlock some higher- grade War charms, and get them when you hit 10 Xp again (likely after the fight).

If you're curious, i'll put up the charms that you might have available for purchase.
Remember that they're dependent on a combination of thread contribution and what you did recently, though, so they might change over time.

Husband-Seducing Demon Dance (1 Ess. A performance you give causes anyone seeing it to instantly gain a positive feeling for you (love, respect, starry-eyed admiration, etc))
Respect-Commanding Attitude (1 Ess, Scene. Interrupts everyone and anything going on, in order to deliver a statement that will be heard)
Tireless Hero's Soul (Permanent. Vastly increases resistance to tiredness and fatigue)
Terrifying Glorious Presence (upgrades Majestic Radiant Presence: on top of its effect, all social attacks have 1 automatic success)

[twilight]
Judge's Ear Technique (1 Ess, Scene. Can tell when a person lies knowingly)
Courtier's Eye Technique (1 Ess, Can tell someone's backgrounds)

[night]
Graceful Crane Stance (permanent, gives you supernatural balance and lightness of step)

Previous threads have toyed with the idea that Maka never wears any (nor any bra) as a sort of signature style, which is an idea I wholeheartedly support.

I think she's firmly in a "I'm a Solar Exalted anyway, also terrifyingly hot and I basically use my massive sex appeal as a weapon in social combat, what do I care" mindset.

The way she acts (wearing what's basically an extremely short and narrow towel for days, flashing people without a second thought, climbing out of the sea naked with completely no sense of shame) seems to reinforce that.

Granted, it's mostly our fault. I regret nothing

Downtime will partially depend on how Maka acts. You will always have chances for downtime sooner or later, though. Up to now things have been fairly frenetic, but it won't probably be always like this.
>>

Can just imagine Maka trying to train a bunch of burly pirates on how to fight. Moving her arms back in forth in the stereotypical martial arts training poses. Mean while all these pirates are looking wondering what the Christ this broad is doing.

We should put off buying Tiger Training right away then. Increasing our pure melee fighting capability should make us a lot harder to kill.

Without charms, buying a single point of Dawn today increased our killiness by 20%. Even with Hero Style the increase is not inconsiderable.

Someone raised an issue earlier with conquering wavecrest in regards to getting a wild hunt called on us.
It occurred to me that we don't have to let the people know they were conquered by a solar. We find and convince someone ambitious in their government (or who has some moral objections, or whatever) then help him/her stage a coup. That would be a low risk low reward approach.
That being said, the rewards of personally ruling are greater, and just think of all those artifacts we can loot from a failed wild hunt.

This seems to be better idea to take BEFORE taking tiger warrior.
It is the equivalent of 3 weeks of training with tiger warrior, but added instantly and not capped by our own (currently low) stats. In the long term tiger is better of course.

So? the end result of both is +dice

Heroism-Encouraging Presence
+ 3 dice bonus immediately with no training of troops
- Have to be present to give the bonus

Tiger warrior
+ can increase dice further
+ increase remains when we are not around
- takes time to upgrade the troops

The end result is that Heroism-Encouraging Presence is better in the short term while tiger warrior is better in the long term... and the two stack

>>
>>30835973
I think core underprices it. being able to tell when someone lies is very powerful. pricing it this much means you have to be smart and use it on a statement that really matters, which is sort of a minigame in and of itself.

It can detect half-truths to the extent that you can tell how much the person in front of you is being honest or deceitful. People who say the literal truth in a misunderstandable way, or that say the truth but omit critical facts, don't ping as lies.
If they mix truth and lies, you get a "he's mixing truth and lies" response and with a roll (soc + twilight) you can understand what's the truth and what's the lie.

I don't know how exactly EF is going to handle it, of course, but I imagine bonus dice for the commander help him keep his troops from routing and makes them follow his orders faster and helps him come up with better tactics
The troops having more dice probably means they do more damage, dodge and parry better, can take more damage before they die etc.
>>
>>30836116
You may know Saint Seiya better as Knights of the Zodiac.

Not that useful when your in say a diplomatic meeting with a Lunar who says he'll be there to help you in 5 days time.

Then in five days you get jumped by fate ninjas and no help arrives. Sure it would be possible to come back but you're probably dead.
>>
>>30836049
Unless he said so somewhere and i didn't notice it, which is possible, only tattooed lunars have it canonically. as well as immunity to most buffs from sorcery. but EF's system might be different. >>
>>30836091
>can you explain the difference?

Training your troops makes them more skilled and powerful even when you're not around. It's also not a purely physical training, as in increases NCO-equivalent leadership and self-confidence. Basically it makes them into an effective, powerful combat force that can also operate fairly effectively on their own.

It doesn't increase Mental nor Twilight (which is general culture, knowledge and occult), Night (stealth) or Eclipse (travel and logistics), so it can't also improve high-level officer's planning and strategy skills, magical/thaumaturgical support, black ops-type skills, the ability to manage supply lines, or in general all high command level stuff. (There's a separate Twilight 3 power for that)

Improving your own War score makes you a better, more skilled, more charismatic, more effective commander, but it does nothing to improve your troops in and of themselves. It doesn't make them stronger or less likely to tire or sturdier or more skilled with their weapons, nor does it make them better at managing themselves or acting independently.

Basically: Tiger Warrior Training Technique if you want elite troops that can fight under you but also carry out actions on their own. Heroism-Encouraging Presence if you want to be an amazing battlefield commander whose troops can rely on.

(Both if you want to assrape any armed force the universe might toss at you and forge a mighty empire on the bones of your enemies.)
>>
>>30836297
So, first Tiger-Warrior, then later Heroism-Encouraging. Got it.

Okay then. I was wondering there for a second why increasing discipline wasn't mentioned.
>>
>>30836297
Thank you, but that doesn't actually answer the question (due to the context)

Namely, if you are personally leading a troop into battle who had 3 weeks of tiger warrior training, vs leading a troop without said training while using Heroism-Encouraging Presence. What is the difference then, mechanically. Don't both just add +3 dice to the encounter in such a situation?
>>

>>

>>30836457
Clausewitz and Sun would both be proud.
>>
>>30836450
No. One adds a +3 to Maka's ability to lead. The other is a total of +3 to the troops' actual personal rolls.
>>
>>30836450
That does answer the question. Read better.

Heroism Encouraging Presence adds +3 dice to your leadership rolls temporarily.

Tiger Warrior Training + 3 weeks of training would permanently add +3 to your troops' Physical, Dawn and Zenith scores (separately, you pick where each +1 goes).

These two charms improve different things in different ways.
>>
>>30836495
I know, the +3 to troops own personal ability means they keep it when she isn't around.
And the +3 to leadership means she provides it to fresh troops.

What I am actually asking is, IF she is personally leading the troops, is there any effective difference between the two.

Aka
"Maka leads the untrained troops with heroism, roll Leadership 3 + Troops 3 + 3 from heroism charm = 9"
vs
"Maka leads the trained troops without heroism, roll leadership 3 +Troops 6 = 9"

effectively making the results identical in that specific situation. Where it differs is when
1. The troops have to act without her around
2. She leads random untrained troops she just recruited
>>
>>30836573
I think successes rolled on a leadership roll provide +1 dice to the troops. That means Maka's +3 is the equivalent of +1.5 for them.
>>
>>30836573
Think of it this way. One means that your troops are awesome. The other makes your opponent suddenly realize that you managed to hide an airship behind a small tree.
>>
>>30836573
Heroism also costs essence/use, so Tiger warrior is more cost-efficient.
>>
>>30836573
Your troops' scores are not a dice-adder to your own scores. What made you think that I'd be doing that?

>Your troops' scores are not a dice-adder to your own scores. What made you think that I'd be doing that?
I was NOT thinking that we add their dice to ours, I was thinking that we add our dice to theirs.
That is: "Troop performance is a sum of troop quality and the leadership bonus we provide". Thus a +3 leadership seemed clear to me that it indicates +3 to the effective score of the troops under our command for the sake of THEIR performance (not our performance).
>>
>>30836297
>or Eclipse (travel and logistics)
We might need to get Nemo this stuff too.
>>
>>30836809
Well..
1. We have judged the current rulership to be corrupt, the penalty for that is removal
2. We are a queen, we want a kingdom to rule. And they are the ideal candidate (we want to exterminat the lintha, we are allied with tianna and three rivers. this leaves wavecrest)
3. We could have them ally with tianna and three rivers for the benefit of all three.

While it MIGHT be possible for us to convince their gods to stop accepting human sacrifices or convince the rulers to stop giving human sacrifice, where is the JUSTICE in that?
>>
>>30836830
Yeah, but I don't know that that's necessarily going to be accomplished by knocking over Wavecrest.

We CAN, if that's how we want to go about it, but the only specific thing that's been mentioned re: Wavecrest is "fuck human sacrifice".

The amusing thing is I'm running a game where the players are a Terrestrial Brotherhood sent by the Realm to stop a self-styled Solar pirate king from taking over Wavecrest and using it to mount a major military offensive, which is almost identical to what you're proposing for Maka now.

The Terrestrials are also expected to punch volcano gods in the face until they stop demanding sacrifices in the process.

I am amused by the symmetry here, considering I've been planning that game since long before this quest started up.
>>
>>30836896
Wavecrest aren't exactly pro-Lintha either, from what I remember.

It's mostly the fact that we're removing their right to self-governance (while Wavecrest is technically a satrapy, the Realm has almost no influence there - as evidenced by the fact that their volcano gods can still demand human sacrifices without getting beaten senseless by Immaculate Monks).
