Dude, this thing is practically dead. Until Night Shift World anon gets back to work, there's no use in making another thread.
>>
>>30889461
List Anon here. While I think it might have been the best idea for Night Shift World Anon to start the new thread once he had updates, I still don't want to see this thread die quite so soon. I'll try and at least post a few more quirk lists once I get in to work in the hopes that the ball will start rolling again.
>>
>>30889621
>>30889461
This thing better not die before NSW Anon comes back. I really want to play the game.

In the meantime though: Has anyone besides razzle-dazzle guy played the game yet? How was it? Does anyone have any stories?
>>
>>30889722
I would, but I don't think that the game is in a playable stage yet without some heavy modification like what RDGuy did.
>>
Question: Want to run a game in this setting and want to set the atmosphere appropriately. Thinking about having music going quietly in the background like a gas station would have. Anyone have any recommendations for the playlist? I'm looking for normal and ominous or creepy, Muzak a plus.
>>
>>30890094
This is a sound clip that someone made specifically for this game. The intended scenario would be for a moment where the radio would turn on and play this song, but I guess it could be used for general background atmospheric stuff.

>>
>>30890150
I still can't get over how creepy this thing is.
>>
Question: How would everyone feel if The Night Shift were a TV miniseries?
>>
>>30890293
If it could be done well, I'd watch it. AC Prime Acquisitions would be the big bad.
>>
>>30890293
I think it would run something like Stephen Kings Kingdom Hospital
>>
Anyone here read Gil's All Fright Diner?
there are some pretty decent things that could fit well here.

Has there been any weird stuff that has WW1 flavors?
>You glance out the store and find the surrounding landscape turning into an artillery-blasted wasteland, with a myriad of trenches and barbed wire snaking across the land.
>Sounds of artillery and gunfire suddenly overtake your station, but besides the sounds of battle, everything is as it should be.
>A customer walks in wearing an unidentified uniform, helmet, and gas mask, bleeding from a gunshot wound. He will shout that the war is finally over, and die on the spot. He will disappear when you're not looking.
>A red biplane, pockmarked with bulletholes, lands on the road in front of you. Suddenly, from the back room door, comes a repair crew hauling various tools, which runs to the biplane and fixes it. You do not know where the pilot nor the crew came from.
>An alarm blares, and you hear whistling from high above.
>Spectres of various fallen soldiers rise from the station floor, their skeletal figures still garbed in their respective uniforms. A command is barked, and they guard the station against hostile supernaturals.
>Alternatively they occupy the gas station, and starts turning it into a fortified position.
>>
>>30890722
If you want, add those to the Tables document.

Though their listed duties on the Night Shift never explicitly send them there, the Gas Station has a broad expanse of flat roof that is accessible to the Attendants. However, just like any aspect of the Station, the roof has its own set of quirks and hazards:

1. While the roof can be reached by means of a ladder and a hatchway in the ceiling, this ladder and hatchway tend to move around the Station from night to night. Sometimes the ladder and hatchway are replaced with a staircase and door.

2. The ladder or staircase leading up to the roof are FAR too long compared to how tall the Station ought to be.

3. Atop the roof is an old coop made of wood, chicken wire and corrugated metal, in front of which is a locker filled with writing supplies, and inside of which someone has been caring for a flock of courier pigeons. Clipped to each pigeon's foot is a message tube, and inside each message tube is a different cryptic message or piece of correspondence.

4. Hidden from below, the roof of this sleepy little desert Station sports a pair of WWII era antiaircraft guns.

5. The gas station has a single second story room surmounted by a short radio antenna behind its neon sign. Inside, the room contains complex radio broadcasting equipment as well as a number of worryingly coded ledgers and wall maps augmented with technical scribbles and pin-and-string arrays.

6. You discover that the roof appears to be MUCH higher up than it appears from the ground.

7. You and a female coworker find that the stars are more numerous and more beautiful tonight than you have ever see them before. In the center of the roof, a picnic blanket and romantic candlelit dinner for two have been set out.

8. On the roof you find dozens of bleached skeletons belonging to small things like birds or humans, or one bleached skeleton belonging to a very large thing like a pterodactyl.

Well well well. Night Shift World anon here. I've made it through the majority of my birthday weekend mostly alive. I'll be back to work soon.

On the plate right now;

Effort - I'm going to hammer out its generic and specific uses, as well as re-visit how it gets replenished.

Management - Starting number. I toyed around with having it connected to Background, much like Paycheck and Effort, but decided against it. I think there will be a base simply from how many Attendants there are (now officially the name for PC's in Night Shift World). Related, I will begin working on guidelines for Threats and Events impacting Management and Paycheck.

The rule of thumb, so far, will be that most anything that happens to the Attendants which isn't mundane will generally require the expenditure of Paycheck, Management or Effort. Threats and larger events will threaten all at once. Threats should be the largest sap of Effort, since they are intended to be the meat-and-potatoes of gameplay.
>>
>>30889461
This better not go the way of MercWorld.

>>30891647
> 7. You and a female coworker find that the stars are more numerous and more beautiful tonight than you have ever see them before. In the center of the roof, a picnic blanket and romantic candlelit dinner for two have been set out.
What happens if the two's orientations are incompatible?
>>
>>30890293
Funny you should mention that.

I've actually recently gotten a possible connection to the TV business.

If everyone is okay with me doing so, I may be able to approach him with the idea.

What does everyone say?
>>
>>30891860
Yeah, I was speaking from my own POV on that one. It ought to be changed to "that coworker you've kind of got a thing for." Or, for maximum upset, "that coworker you just can't stand."

Anyone have any requests for parts or the station in need of a quirk list?
>>
>>30891866

If this is true, then daaamn son. /tg/ gets it done: a TV series with a tabletop that comes with it! Or was it the other way around? And if it gets popular, time to merchandize!

Speaking of merchandises...
>The PCs find that a shipment of bobble-head figurines have been delivered for the station to sell. The bobble-heads are uncannily similar to the PCs, up to the location of facial zits they may have.
> A radio commercial advertises the gas station, this specific gas station, even though it's way out in nowhere. Even going so far as to naming all of the PCs as the 'employees you can count on!'
>You find an old box filled with a lego-like toy in the back room. When assembled using the instructions provided, it turned out to be a scale model of the station, complete with small figurines that represents the employees. Unbeknownst to them, any damage they now do to the toy assembly will be reflected in the real station, and the real employees.

I'm actually planning on meeting up with my connection within the next few weeks. I'll keep you guys posted. But in the meanwhile, I think that the most important anon to get the approval from would be Night Shift World Anon, since he currently has the most standing as to where the game goes.

Also, as for the actual TV show, here's what I'm thinking. It will closely follow some of the scenarios from the Events document. But I'm also going to include some bits from the game, like having the employee characters' backgrounds be based off the backgrounds from NSW.

And I already have an idea on how it will end. You guys will love it.

Located in the back of the Station, the storeroom is a place the Attendants are going to have to know well when the time comes to restock the shelves. Unlike the convenience store or the break room, the storeroom is only occupied when it absolutely has to be in order to defy merchandise or take inventory, making it more mysterious than the rest of the Station:

1. The storeroom is far, far larger than could possibly fit inside the Gas Station. It is a gargantuan, multilevel warehouse filled with dimly lit shelving-unit canyons crammed to the rafters with boxes, crates and drums of all descriptions.

2. Every time an Attendant enters the storeroom, the stock inside has been rearranged and sorted by a different metric: color, size, toxicity, alphabetically by name, etc.

3. There is something living in the storeroom. Something large. Something good at hiding.

4. Speaking of hiding, Attendants entering the storeroom are sometimes accosted by a cluster of young children. They shriek "You're it! You're it! You're it!" Before they scamper off between the aisles of shelves. Attendants will never be able to find them.

5. There are different instances of the storeroom that appear on different days and contain different stock. There is one storeroom that only appears on Leap Day (Feb. 29th), and has been used as "long term storage" for particularly weird or dangerous beasties and stock.

6. On the days when a delivery of merchandise is expected, the storeroom suddenly has its own loading dock.

7. A shelf full of hardbound, phone book thick inventory ledgers fills one wall of the stockroom. The items they list as vital stock range from the mundane to the questionable to the existentially threatening.
>>
>>30892243
I know you're going to have to play things close to the vest, but I have to ask for more info here on what you're thinking as far a "PCs" and "NPCs" here.
>>
>>30890094
A distorted version of "Get Your Kicks in Route 66" would be pretty appropriate.
>>
>>30890094
courage the cowardly dog soundtrack
>>
>>30891752

I need feedback on two things;

1) A possible mental-version of the "Secret Fate Of All Life" Move. This would be used for events, encounters, or GM moves which don't threaten an Attendant's PHYSICAL well-being.

"..."
When you [encounter the uncanny which strains the bounds of sanity] roll+Wis
10+, It's ok it's ok it's ok it's ok it's ok
7-9, FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK (choose one)
- You do not take -1 Effort (must have Effort to take this option)
- You retain the ability to refresh Effort this shift.
- You do not take -1 ongoing.
6 or less, Nope. Attendant quits, effective immediately.
>>
>>30891752
Night Shift World Anon, are you saying that Paycheck and Management can be spent as resources in the same way as effort to affect rolls? Can you give us a few examples of different scenarios that could be affected by different combinations of these resources?

>>30891647
>>30892730
Do you want to make a list for the General Manager's office, or is that a door that room that ought to be left inaccessible?
>>
>>30889424
So how many people can play this, and when will it start?
>>
>>30893619
This looks about right to me, but would this e something that the Skeptic and Paranoid backgrounds would affect?
>>
>>30893837

That is indeed an avenue I think would be appropriate.

>>30893619
2) This is going to be the format for most Solo Portents and Mundane Events. In fact, I think most Portents in general should have a Move associated with them - which prompts me to think I need to create a generic but modifiable Portent Move Template. Anyway, here's an example Solo Portent.

When you [fill out the strange man's survey about the occult] roll+Int
10+, He nods approvingly and leaves his card, saying the first consultation is free.
7-9, He sighs and shakes his head, but leaves his card. Apparently his consultation fee is modest (-1 Paycheck if called)
6 or less, He gets annoyed and promises that your boss will hear about this. -1 Management.

>>30893756
It is something I'm toying with, but really I'm not sure. I think they work well as mere metrics. They're numbers which track up and down and whose movement signifies something in-fiction; namely, your finances are taking a hit/boon or that Management trusts you/think you drink farts.

If anything, Paycheck will probably be used more than Management (which is a kind of 'lose condition' since hitting 0 means someone gets shitcanned).
>>
>>30893769

I encourage any and all playtesting immediately. It caps nicely at 4 - you have one person in each role. I think eventually I'll start expanding those options but for now Cashier, Stock Clerk, Gas Attendant, and Assistant Manager are pretty good.

Is there any desire to see Jobs have more to offer than 'you can't fail at the thing your Job does on the regular'? Or should Attendant customization fall mostly on Background, as it does currently?
>>
>>30893837
>>30893925
I can imagine that a Skeptic background might come with a "Shaken Faith" or "Shattered Worldview" caveat that would detract from their "...." roll, and that. Paranoid background might either come with an "I WAS RIGHT" bonus to their role, or conversely negatively affect their role somewhere else when dealing with something that is actually completely mundane.
>>
>>30891822
You mean degenerate into a circlejerk of banality that eventually sucks all the life out of the concept until the only people that care about keeping the fluff up somewhere are tripfag shitheads who systematically delete everything good from every thread and replace it with overanalyzed sci-fi backstory wank?

Still bitter! :)
>>
>>30894187

Here's what I have so far for Backgrounds which interact with "Secret Fate Of All Life" and "..." Moves.

Skeptic - Effort 1, Threshold 4 - When you [offer a plausible mundane explanation for the uncanny] take +1 forward to your next "..." Move roll. If you cannot offer any such explanation, take -1 ongoing to "..." instead.
Conspiracy Theorist - Effort 1, Threshold 4 - When you [offer an implausible explanation for the uncanny] take +1 forward to your next "..." Move roll. Take -1 ongoing whenever you find evidence that your crackpot theory is correct.
Paranoid - Effort 1, Threshold 4 - Take =1 to all "..." Move rolls, but +1 to all "Secret Fate Of All Life" Move rolls. Also you're bad at parties.

The idea is that the Skeptic is fine so long as they never engage directly with the uncanny, the Conspiracy Theorist is fine so long as they never turn out to be RIGHT, and the Paranoid is vigilant enough to have a leg-up getting the fuck out of dodge.
>>
>>30893925
How about this:

Pay:
Primary - Your Win Condition. You make enough to reach your goal and quit with dignity.
Secondary - Your Penalty. Lost stock and property damage gets your pay docked.
Tertiary - Your Resource. Pay can be used to buy supplies between Night Shifts.

Management:
Primary - Your Lose Condition. You lose the Management's approval and you get canned.
Secondary - Your Boon. Staying on the Management's good side grants passive bonuses to your Jobs.
Tertiary - Your Resource. When in deep trouble you can call the Management for advice, but they don't like it.

Effort:
Primary: Your resource. Spent to affect the game.
Secondary - ???
Tertiary - ???
>>
I love the fact that it's called a "..." roll. Because i myself am prone to overuse of ellipses.
>>
>>30894514

You're clever, I like you.

I don't think Effort needs to be more than just a resource, honestly, since it is basically an abstraction of, well, effort. If wiggled with, it might do as a kind of Sanity meter but I'm opposed to Sanity meters in general.

Management, being a thing tracked by the group of Attendants rather than any individual one, would have to have buffs which applied unilaterally. I could probably work up a list of Management benchmarks which would unlock special Moves usable by any Attendant.
>>
>>30894663
Hm. So management would be a player controlled bonus and resource?
>>
>>30894784

More along the lines of...

If you have 3+ Management, you gain access to [SOME PASSIVE BUFF]
If you have 4+ Management, you may [GET SOME OTHER THING I DONT KNOW YET]

Additionally, we'd add a new Move.

"The Green Phone"
When you [call Management for advice] roll+Management
10+, You get some advice from Management, -1 Management
7-9, You get some advice from Management, -1 Management and choose 1.
- You do not get additional duties
- You do not get docked pay (-1 Paycheck)
- You feel like things will be ok. Do not add +1 Weird
6 or less, They hung up. Shit. -1 Management and choose 1.
>>
>>30894892
I like this.

>"Ok, dude, I think the biplane is coming around for another strafe. What're we gonna do?"
>"We could always call management."
>"I don't think we're that desperate, think of something else."

It should be more of a last resort thing, though, with a tangible threat of consequences.
>>
>>30895084
In this case, using the Green Phone by the cash register might have the Management tell the Attendants to check the roof, where they would find the antiaircraft guns mentioned in >>30891647.

Which brings us to a possible passive buff, "Benevolent Architecture," which might grant bonuses when utilizing the gas station's structure or spatial anomalies against threats.
>>
>>30895314
>Antiaircraft guns on the roof
Gotta love list anon
>>
>>30892243
Can I ask, does your connection work for a cable or satellite network? Also, are you talking about a miniseries type show?
>>
>>30895314

I would always have the Management speak helpfully, but without acknowledging anything weird.

"Hey, yeah, its Dave. Um. We have a, uh, biplane? Would you call it a biplane Carl?"
"I'd call it a biplane."
"Carl would call it a biplane. Anyway. Its been shooting at us on-and-off all night, so...."
"..."
"...yeaaaah."
"Please make sure that you pack up any equipment left on the roof after you use it."
"I don't- oh, they hung up. Carl, I think we gotta go to the roof."
>>
I've been going through the Night Shift Events Chart.... the unofficial one? Sheet 3, additional adventures? Throwing out a few with my own twist...

>In a restroom stall...
The graffiti is spreading. leaving your hand on the wall for too long will cause you to come away with a variety of obscene tattoos on your palm, which start to spread up your arm...

>There has been a mass breakout from a nearby prison...
One of the inmates arrives, still in orange jumpsuit and straight jacket, and clocks in for his overnight shift. He asks you not to tell management that he's so late.

>You suddenly realize that the cover of the manhole out by the pumps has been pushed aside. If you choose to investigate, you'll discover a maze of cramped sewers and storm drains beneath the station. Beware of rats and alligators.
... The rodents are of unusual size,
... The rats are forming a civilization, based around a death-cult that worships the alligators.
... The alligators are tiny and would make great pets.

etc. Just some goofing off on the extra adventures page.

Psych Eval - Patient 0834/Randy

>Look, you really wanna know what happened? I'll tell you, but you won't believe me. Hell, no one would believe this story.
>Start from the beginning? You nuts? All right, whatever. My name's Randy [REDACTED], and I work-well, used to work at a gas station outside of Bumfuck, Texas. I was third shift. The night shift. Any other gas station that would be a shitty job, sure, but here it was something different.
>First night I was there, this guy in a grey suit comes in and buys a bag of Twix. The counter girl, Christy, talked with him like he was a personal friend. Turns out the old bastard came by every night and bought Twix.
>After he left, Christy pulled me aside and told me to make sure we always had Twix in stock. I asked her why, and she just started shaking and walked away, muttering something I didn't catch.
>I thought that was a little weird, but I moved on. Hell, I had no idea what was to come.
>I was cleaning up Aisle Two when the next guy came in. A bit on the short side, white, brown haired, and looking abso-fucking-lutely terrified. He kept repeating 'Just ignore me' in a zombie voice, and he stared down the aisle I was cleaning.
>After about five minutes, James came out from the back and saw the poor kid. He still hadn't moved, and when James tried to talk with him, I swear to God the kid started to...fragment. Almost like a bad TV signal, really. He was screaming this blood-chilling scream the whole time. Sounded like he was being torn apart. James grabbed his arm, to try and help, and then he started screaming and glitching out too. I shat myself right then. Probably pissed myself, too.
>See, I told you you wouldn't believe me.

End Eval Section 1

>>30895825
Awesome... a few more
>Over the radio, you hear that a large meteor has landed in the area. Everything seems normal up until a few hours later...
... A pair of elderly farmers arrive with something smoking under the tarp in the back of their pickup truck, and a very, very young infant.
... when a large, person-sized rock floats into the gas station, buys a can of shaving cream, and pays with unsorted (but exact) change. All nickles are Canadian.

>All the road maps are clearly incorrect. What the fuck kind of state is "Unified Dakota" or "Western Caligon"? What's more, they seem to be international boundaries. The hell?
... The map of Rhode Island is just an 8' x 12' fold out poster that reads, in block type "YOU CAN'T GET THERE FROM HERE"

>The players are tasked with defrosting and cleaning the inside of the oldest freezer in the Station. Deep inside, they find:
... A vintage Volkswagen beetle encased in a block of ice. The registration is in the glove box, there's fuel in the tank, and there's a hippy-corpse under the hood.

>Strange purple-tinted fumes begin venting from the ground near the dumpsters.
... they restore life to any organic material that is bathed in them... *any* organic material... including the hot dogs you threw away from the roller grill.
... They instantly corrode and destroy any metal that comes in contact with them, starting with the dumpster itself. Who will clean up the pile of trash? And the cloud is drifting towards the pumps.
>>
>>30896029
Why would a filthy Dayshifter be working the Night Shift?
>>
>>30896377
Before he got moved to Day Shift, anon. I guess, I'm not the writefag.
>>
>>30896377
He's been "demoted".

or the night shift came up short, so he's pulling a double shift.

But even if he only does the night shift from then forward, the stink of day shift never washes off.
>>
>>30895578
This is pretty much spot in I feel like. Management is helpful but vague. They never acknowledge the weirdness explicitly.

Possible passive boon ideas, in no particular order:

>Asshole's Arsenal
- Requires Managment > 5
- Randy might be an asshole now, but he's an asshole who remembers what it's like to work the Night Shift. He's left you a weapon or tool in a secret cache to help you combat the weirdness around you.

>Where Everybody Knows Your Name
- Requires Management > 7
- Anything coming to the station that can be construed as a "customer" is more likely to be benevolent or neutral toward longtime Attendants.

>The Ghost of Night Shifts Past
- Requires Management < 3
- If the Attendants are below a certain Management threshold and have Threats in need of immediate attention, the ghost of the 1980s Assistant Manager will assist the Attendants in completing nightly tasks.

>Overtime
- Requires Management = 1
- (Not quite sure yet)

Also, we really need to make sure that all these mechanics terms fit the "Employee Handbook" style we're going for.
>>
>>30896713
>Overtime
You gain +1 paycheck, but don't get enough rest, your Effort remains unchanged from last night?
>>
>>30896868
That works well. I was also thinking of more literal "overtime, where if the players' Management level had dropped to 1, the sun wouldn't come up and the current Night Shift would go into overtime until their Management tasks were completed. I'm not sure what the cost would be for such a thing though, maybe draining their effort for the next shift?
>>
>>30896972

Except having the sun not come up in the morning sounds more like a Threat's Doom than it does something the players can rely on. I'd rather avoid hardcoding weird/supernatural elements into the players' repertoire. The Weird stuff should be happening around them and to them, not at their behest.
>>
>>30896972
I don't care who management is or who the hell the players think they are. The sun comes up right on schedule, even if you didn't finish restocking the fridge.
>>
>>30897184

With some minor tweaking, that could be the result of a botched "Green Phone" roll when dealing with a Threat.

"Uh, hi, yeah. It's Dave. We've got a problem? Would you call it a problem Carl?"
"I'd call it a problem."
"Carl would call it a problem. The sun doesn't appear to be rising yet. Normally it does."
"The sun comes up right on schedule, even if you didn't finish restocking the fridge."
"Well that- oh, they hung up. That was mighty cryptic, Carl."
"I'd call it cryptic."
"Downright obtuse, it was."
>>
>>30891860
then you and the coworker must fight the romance hard so you don't knock each other up that night.
>>
One of an Attendant's primary duties at the Gas Station is, surprisingly enough, to provide paying customers with gasoline. To these ends, the Station comes equipped with a small, flat-roofed pavilion out front furnished with four old, crusty pumps, a pair of dented trash cans, a locker holding bottles of oil, transmission and washer fluid, and little else. Separated from the relative safety of the Station by about fifteen feet of asphalt and exposed to both the elements and mysteries of the desert night, Pump Jockeys might experience the following:

1. The number of pumps under the pavilion roof changes from night to night. Four seem to be the maximum number, and one the minimum.

2. The pumps no longer dispense gasoline, and instead pump some other liquid. Instead of Regular, Middle-Grade and Premium, you now have Sprite, Coke, and Dr. Pepper, or A, B, and AB blood types, or Sea Water, Fresh Water, and Distilled Water, etc. All customers seem to think this is normal.

3. The cigarette butts littering the concrete pad around the pumps seem to be arranged into elaborate geometric patterns or cryptic messages.

4. Instead of showing the amount and price of the fuel dispensed, the gas gauges on the gas pumps: offer 8-Ball like fortunes, display only alchemical symbols, or try to make conversation, etc.

5. Coming back out of the Station after a bathroom break, the Gas Attendant discovers that the fueling pavilion has been freshly painted and decorated, looking brand new. Whether it stays that way, or slowly returns to its original state over the course of the shift is up to the GM.

6. Attendants can hear a soft, sad song being sung somewhere in the immediate vicinity. After a little investigation, it appears that the singing is coming from the underground fuel storage tanks.

So it seems to me that what you're essentially suggesting is that at higher Employee Approval Ratings, the buffs and bonuses are geared more toward mitigating Threats, while at lower Approval Ratings the aim is to avoid Management's wrath.

I can dig it, but there would also need to be a bunch of cumulative perks as well.

I'm curious, what happens if a player is say bitten by a vampire? Is his working over because management doesn't tolerate non-humans, is continue on with changes to stats or is there some sorta Dandy reset that happens at the beginning of every shift to revert status of that style of shit but the adventure itself remains unchanged just nobody talks about that event.
>>
>>30901612
Depends how the players/GM want to run it. Personally, I like the reset idea, just hint at something sinister behind it. Like a character who always drank Coca Cola now feels like drinking Pepsi even though he hated it before or a regular who ALWAYS wears a certain shirt wearing a different one from now on.

It's either roll a new character or...he comes back completely human yet quirky.

NEVER give them powers.
>>
>>30901612
Speaking from personal preference and again pointing out that Night Shift World is not the definitive Night Shift, I would end that character as a PC. Their fundamental worldview, how they understood and interacted with the world, was irreversibly altered. No longer human, they would also no longer be the purview of the game. And even if they were somehow cured, becoming a monstrous sanguine predator of the supernatural ilk renders whoever you were before nearly moot.

Give them a "Secret Fate Of All Life" roll, at most, but otherwise they're done as a player-character and are now the function of narrative demands.
>>
I think we need a chupacabra encounter.

Also, a lot of the "Additional adventures" could go on the main page, and vice versa. Some of them just seem like flavor encounters, or are too similar to others already in the doc.

Make coffee, clean/repair/refill slurpee machine, putting up/changing advertisements in the store, changing the sign in front of the gas station, basic repairs/janitorial work in the bathroom, some kind of job/worksite evaluation, online training, backup security footage, service store generator.

It's not Twix that the Grey Man eats. It's an oddball candy that hasn't been manufactured in 20 years. The management have a deal with the family that founded the now-defunct company, and continues to buy this candy directly, to keep the Grey Man happy.

>>30896377

Day Shift Randy is the only guy who ever got switched out of the Night Shift. Nobody knows how he did it, or we'd all be safely working a nice, boring day shift. He tried to talk the other dayshifters into believing us at first, then went silent in the face of their mockery, then later joined them in denouncing us as all full of it.
At least most of the time. He sometimes leaves notes for the new night shift guys, little hints to keep people safe.

Something else I forgot to type up about the Grey Man.
If you ever ask him his name, he'll happily tell you. It's exactly the sort of name you'd expect a guy like him to have, in fact! You and the other guys might even have a chuckle about how he looks like the right guy for that name.

Still, it occurs to you, minutes later, that you have no idea what he said. There's just a blank space there in your memory, which jumps from asking his name, to the moment when you're responding to his answer, with nothing inbetween.

What about a difficulty system for the attributes? Currently all checks are as difficult as all others.

Like 5 and below is a fail for easy. 7 and below for medium and 9 and below for a difficult test.

Examples of these could be; running away from a threat with like a mop bucket as an obstacle might be an easy check; climbing up the ladder to escape a threat to the roof might be a medium check; and something akin to matrix dodging might be a difficult check.

The system also seems like it could be 'GM-less'.

>5. There are different instances of the storeroom that appear on different days and contain different stock. There is one storeroom that only appears on Leap Day (Feb. 29th), and has been used as "long term storage" for particularly weird or dangerous beasties and stock.

This would make for a great Threat. Leap Day has rolled around again and the Attendants are surprised to find that the expiration dates on all the stock inside are four years old, yet the products themselves still seem fresh, as if their clock had been stopped somehow. What's even weirder, it seems like a lot of merchandise has been trashed as well, and the Attendants have to leave the door to the storeroom propped open in order to haul all the wrecked stock to the dumpsters.

Thinking nothing more of it at first, they go about their business, not realizing that what they've found is the Leap Day Storeroom, and that they've released a VERY powerful Thing that a previous Night Shift had trapped in the room before it vanished. Now, the Attendants have to lure it back inside before midnight / dawn and banish it for another four years.
>>
>>30911385
This has had to be done every four years since the 1980s, or perhaps since the station opened. It might be a major threat, a final BBEG type of threat with many minor portents or clues leading up to it, not just over the course of one Night Shift, but over the course if the whole campaign.

1. Any Leap Year calendars, old or new, the Attendants find all have ominous demarcations on the date of February 29th.

2. The concept of the storeroom having different iterations based on odd or even numbered days is established.

3. Old security tapes in the VHS library show nothing but static and distortion for footage of February 29th Night Shifts.

4. The "run book" ledger left to future Attendants by the 1980s Assistant Manager is full of cryptic warnings about pulling out two Night Shifts' worth of stock in the 28th and barricading the storeroom door as soon as your shift starts on the 29th, as well as advice on what to do if the Thing escapes.

Actually, I really like the idea of one set of names being used for both male and female employees in the "Employee Training Manual." It adds to the mystery and the ambiguity of the setting, plus, the last fluff piece could be one group calling about the new gas station across the road that seems to be staffed by Rule 63 versions of themselves.

Might just take this idea for a Big Bad Threat for the end if a Night Shift campaign where both Stations need to team up to beat the threat to both their realities.

Not sure of having a physical GM's office that you can explore is a good idea, but I'll think up a few quirks for one anyhow.

At the back of the Break Room is a door. A dreaded door. A scarred up green door with a frosted glass window on which the words "GENERAL MANAGER'S OFFICE" have been stenciled in chipped black and gold paint.

Behind this door is a moderately large office given the size of the Station as a whole, the faded green and gold wallpaper on the walls, the grimy carpet on the flood and the battered furnishings about the room clearly installed when the Station was first built. The back wall is a floor to ceiling bookshelf. The inward-facing wall is covered in framed photographs, paintings, news articles and other pieces of Station memorabilia. The outward-facing wall is set with a window made of glass block, which is likewise surrounded by framed diplomas and certifications. Flanking the door on either side of the entrance are a set of filing cabinets and a large, old safe.

In the center of the room is a cluttered, grey metal desk and a pair of chairs,
; a plain wooden one in front and a stained leather-backed one behind.
>>
>>30915245
1. Every time an Attendant is forced to enter the office, they might find that things have subtly changed: the pattern on the wallpaper or carpet has changed, items on the desk or pictures on the walls or books in the shelves have been rearranged, the potted plant beneath the window is different, etc.

2. Atop the desk is an incredibly old computer, displaying a very crude but curious program that allows the user to: restock or rearrange items inside the Store, control the actions of select Attendants on both Night and Day Shifts, schedule meteorological phenomena, etc.

3. Attendants always feel like they're being watched while in the Office, and are compelled to act on their best behavior.

4. Whenever an Attendant enters the Office, whispers and murmurs can be heard.

4. The assortment if diplomas on the wall consistently change schools on each viewing.

5. The framed Station memorabilia on the wall include things like: news articles about the Station burning down on seven separate occasions, a full-color poster from the creepy carnival that OSS through from time to time, photos of "special" Attendants like the 80s Assistant Manager and the PCs, etc.

6. The safe contains: a gleaming stack of gold ingots, a Luger and two boxes of ammo, a haphazard like of film reels in tins with labels like "Zapruder Footage (Unedited), efc.

7. Each Attendant's personnel file in the filing cabinet is a thick, exhaustive dossier detailing their entire life story, their hopes, dreams and aspirations, as well as several rather cryptic metrics.

Actually, there was talk in the original thread about making the break room a sanctuary that was safe from any and all weirdness. Maybe we could take your idea and have it be that the General Manager's Office is the Station's ONE completely safe and immutable location, but hiding there until the danger clears carries with it steep penalties.

I'm not sure how this setting would really translate into a tv series, also I'm pretty sure even if a show like this were to be given a green light, it would have udnergone a lot of meddling and changes from execs to water it down, probably end up as some kind of sitcom set in a convenience store with crappy cgi ghosts or demons thrown in, also character casting considering this setting has alternate or parallel universes so including characters might get quite different. That's even if it were to be accepted, it would most likely not get beyond the pre production stages as 80% of planned shows don't get more than a pilot.
>>
>>30916984
While all this is true, I wouldn't mind a few work-comedy elements if the characters were ones we could care about.

We can dream.
>>
>>30916984

Night Shift World anon here. Me and TV-connection-anon are in the process of pilot stuff. Our plan is to pitch it to his connection. Part of the pre-pitch work is crafting a coherent world and narrative from the resources here. I'm optimistic.

Our second plan is to go through an independent producer- I mean, Kickstarter is basically made for this stuff. I've got my own connections in that regard. No money, but talented directors and producers.

This sorta thing is always a shot in the dark, but better to try than not, I guess.
>>
>>30917264
I'd still like to see Night Shift World first, if it's all the same to you.
>>
>>30917322

Work on NSW hasn't stopped, so don't worry.
>>
>>30916984
Well, the only other option is a bunch of skilled, dedicated, hard-working and resourceful people making it themselves on a shoestring budget.
Except, you know, that kind of stuff never happens outside of fiction.
>>
>>30917366

That's basically all me and my friends did in college.
>>
>>30917409
It does happen. And really, of all things, night shift at a gas station, even with weird things happening, is not the most challenging thing to shoot on a budget.
>>
>>30917409
Well...
I wish I knew people like you and your friends, then.
>>
>>30917264
It's definitely better to try than not, NSW Anon. What we've made here is good, and I think a lot of people can get on board with a show about minimum-wage everyday Joes and Janes having to deal with a surreal, frightening and sometimes wondrous work environment. If it doesn't work out it doesn't work out, but if it DOES work out, you'll have made something amazing.

Some things that you might want to keep in mind though, if I can suggest them, are:

1: The characters are important. They need to be interesting and unique, but also relatable. They are our audience surrogates on the Night Shift, after all.

2. The Gas Station, in maybe my opinion only, ought to have a history, or several layers of history to it. This is where things like the Employee of the Month wall, the 80s Assistant Manager and the Manager's Office appeal to me. If people are going to watch this show, they're going to watch it as much for the Gas Station itself as for the characters.
>>
>>30917475

Go to a college known for its film program, that's how I did it.
>>
By the way, in the same vein as the mysterious manager office, would a private executive bathroom stall make sense?
>>
>>30917600
List Anon here. I was thinking of including one on the list, but couldn't think of anything off-hand to use it for. Any suggestions?
>>
>>30917564
Not film specifically, just people who are actually capable of going out and accomplishing something of their own volition.
>>
>>30917638
Nothing specific, but I thought of it as some extension of the GM office which can actually be harmed/harmful, i.e. while the office is the "eye of the storm" and the only place where never anything supernatural happens, the executive stall has the same green aura of mysteriousness, though it is fair game and stuff can happen there.
>>
>>30918139
I really like the way you described he GM's office as the eye of the storm. The fact that it really is just a plain old dusty office with a bunch of pictures on the walls and a green phone on the desk almost makes the room eerier than the chaos reigning in the station outside.

As to your bathroom idea, interesting! Given how most management really frown upon employees using their private washrooms, it almost seems as if this bathroom is some sort of secret test of character, or just plain old schmuck bait.
>>
Hey guys, TV Anon here. Going to give you all a little update.

First of all, I want to say that NSW Anon has some of the best ideas for this show I've ever heard of. If this goes through, you all will love it.

Now for some crunchy bits. My connection is busy for this week, and conceivably will remain busy for a while. I'll try to get in touch with him soon, though, so we can schedule something. You know, go to Hooters' and talk about TV stuff. That sort of thing.

Right now, I'm getting the ideas that NSW Anon had for the pilot episode and am turning those into an actual script. I won't tell you too much about the first episode, but it's got some cool introductory insights into the Station.

Now, get back to work!

I had an NPC like Dave in one of my Call of Cthulhu games. His name was Chaz.
He's shown up in every game my group has played since.
He's a bit of a dope, kinda stupid. Big and tough and mentally resilient, but pretty dumb.
He contacted one of the PCs by calling him and saying: "Hey, man, my neighbour used to be into all of this weird stuff. He disappeared about a month ago. Let's go check out his house."
He got lost in a House of Leaves-style labyrinth while the party was investigating said labyrinth.
Turned up a few minutes later and one of the PCs jokingly asked if "this is our Chaz".

From that point on the session was about another universe trying to infiltrate the PC's universe, and all of the weird ass shenanigans that entailed.
The Chaz they found in the labyrinth was not, in fact, their Chaz, and when they went to his universe, did some stuff, then finally got back, he tried to kill them.

They still don't know where their Chaz is. They found a third one dead in the labyrinth.

He was part of their special Christmas Dungeon World session, and he left a note for us in a dungeon in AD&D. My friend even played a version of him in GURPS, while I played one in my other friend's CoC game.

List Anon here, still looking to make more lists. I could make a Bathroom list, but I feel like we've already got a lot of material for the Bathrooms. Another option is the Highway outside the Station itself, the dumpster area out back, or maybe the Station's neon signage. Any ideas on what areas need a bit more weirdness?
>>
>>30920770

I think you're missing the point of Dave. Dave is not a plane-tripping agent of reality-invaders, and he's never tried to kill anyone. One time, he kicked a kid in the shin for spilling his milk at lunch, but that was when he was, like, five.

Dave is just a guy. THE just a guy. there are 'just a guys' in other universes who seem positively Mary-Sue next to Dave. Because Dave... Dave is just a guy.

Tonight, you find the station isn't in the midwestern plains/deserty local it's usually in...

Tonight there's a chill in the air, and the station is on a two-lane potholed road smack in the middle of a dense mixed pine and deciduous forest. In addition, there's a sign in the window that wasn't there before reading "Hunting Registration here!". The station may or may not have also grown an outdoorsy section, home to sheath knives, outdoor humor books and even several tanks of "Live Bait"

Events:

>Deer hunters (Deer wearing orange, smoking pipes and clinging to back tags) arrive with a sasquatch strapped to the top of their station wagon. The tag is tied to his toe, and you're expected to verify it.
>Several stereotypical redneck hunters rush into the store and begin fortifying it, claiming the "Deer Avenger" is after them
>A wooden car with a deer hood ornament rolls up, and a family of Sasquatches pile out to use the restroom
>A massive man in suspenders and red and black plaid hitches his blue ox to one of the pumps and leans his axe up against it. He comes in for a cuppa joe.
>The local game warden/conservation officer, who is a deer, comes through to collect one of the log books.
>Smokey the Bear buys all your cigarettes and lighters while giving you a lesson in fire prevention
>The deer head that appeared on the wall begins to laugh maniacally
>Whatever's in the live bait tanks escapes
>Wendigos
>The Grey Man wears backpacking attire
>A '69 Pontiac Firebird with a flaming paintjob pulls into the station. A skeleton in cowboy getup with a flaming skull gets out and nonchalantly begins to fuel it
>When the General Lee pulls in, everyone starts complaining that too many references are being made
>Anyone that ventures into the woods encounters fearsome critters http://www.fearsomecreaturesofthelumberwoods.com/heading.htm
>The station is now on a river instead of a road, and a bunch of men floating logs down the river stop in for a meal
>>
>>30921763
"The aliens have landed. How many Daves is that?"
"Like, four. Tops. What do you think, Dave?"
"You've been spending too much time at the station. This is five, minimum. You're really starting to get used to this job."
"I hope not."
>>
>>30921763
Except try to imagine something with an "averageness" of > 1 Dave.
It just doesn't happen. You'd have to use milliDaves or picoDaves or something.

That, and "averageness" is basically the inverse of "weirdness", right? How do you take a measurement in not-something?

No, it's more like, on the scale from "less weird" to "more weird", absolute zero is defined as Dave.
>>
>>30922577
>that fucking game
Oh lord, the memories. I thought I had repressed them enough!
>>
>>30921767
Alright then. Let's see what we can come up with.

Most of the time, there's not much of anything at all out behind the Gas Station and not much of a reason for Attendants to go there aside from throwing out the trash. A pair of dented "Dump*Star" dumpsters have been shoved up against the building by the back door, and an uneven line of three or four old, rusty shipping containers sit across a small dirt back-lot. Between the containers, a streetlight attached to a single wooden telephone pole bathes the area in a sickly glow.

1. While the dumpster closest to the door usually has room enough to dispose of the nightly trash, the one furthest from the door is always full up to the brim with hundreds to thousands of the same item: doll heads, human teeth, left shoes, pennies, etc.

2. Conversely, the dumpster may be quite literally bottomless, and can be used to dispose of any amount of trash or any number of nasty beasties.

3. On Saturday nights, strings of colored lights appear, hung between the telephone pole and the back of the Gas Station. Tables and chairs are set up around a makeshift dance floor in the middle of the dirt-lot, and the doors to the shipping containers are opened, revealing several different food stands that change, week by week.

Sorry, I must be tired because these ones aren't coming to me as easily as the others. I'll give it a little thought and throw up some updates if I think of them.
>>
>>30922636
I can dig it. So is >>30922595 accurate, or should it be measured more precisely than that?
>>
As someone who just got off working a night shift at a gas station in the middle of no where, I can absolutely vouch that the nights are fucking weird sometimes.
>>
>>30922636
Yeah, Dave is the zero-point, everybody/-thing can only get more weird to the right of the scale from him.
To the left of him, the "anti-weird" side are the rare things like the managers office which as established(?) negates weird stufff happening in it.
>>
>>30922810
Any stories you'd care to share?
>>
>>30922935
Well backstory for my life at the moment. I live ina town of less then 4,000 people. In one of the least populated states in the US.This town basically shuts off at 8pm. I worked from 11-8 as my first night shift. The second and most recent one at a different place was 12-8. I see almost no one but the occasional pot head and guy working at some industrial place on break. Now there were a few things that carried over from both places. One going outside for a smoke break. Occasionally you'd hear voices. Like a conversation nearby. Though no one is ever around it's so bloody odd. Sometimes you can even tell they are speaking English others its clearly something else.
>>
>>30922700
If we must.
I still say measuring strangeness. in units of normalcy is awkward and backwards, though.
Maybe the "proper" form should be [value]^-1Dave?
1 ^-1Dave = 1 Dave (complete normalcy)
2 ^-1Dave = 1/2 Dave
... and so on.

Except that gets confusing if you try to express values between 1/2 and 1 Dave.
1.5 ^-1Dave ~ 2/3 Dave
1.3 ^-1Dave ~ 3/4 Dave
... et cetera.

And how would you refer to that in conversation? NegaDaves?
Of course, since SI prefixes applied to non-SI units is an inherently funny concept, you could have CentiNegaDaves or KiloNegaDaves.

>>30922878
>Negative values for "averageness".
That makes no damn sense and hurts my brain to imagine, yet it works.
Perfect.
>>
>>30923110
Phantom conversations are pretty Night Shift.
>>
>>30923110
The other is the sound of movement. Like someone else is in the store with you. Just where you can't see them. It didn't happen in the first as much but the second it was a nightly thing.Every night I'd come out from the back looking for someone and no one would be there. Apparently the place they tore down for this gas station was "active" for ghosts. Some stupid small town bullshit to me. I don't believe I'm just sharing what happened while I worked. Other times I'd see people walking the sidewalk that's in front of the store.you know the one that's directly in front of every gas station? Yeah, but I'd go look and no one is around. Other times you'd just see people acting odd. Walking the street at odd hours(This is very rare.) One time I saw people doing some bizarre dance in the parking lot across the street there was no music or nothing. I didn't even hear them talk. It's so quiet in this town I could have too.
>>
>>30923201
Yeah considering my second post. It's fairly fucking bizarre.
>>
>>30923273
>>30923404
Phantom conversations, the sense that someone is there in the Station with you when you're all alone, bizarre dancers out in the parking lot, all of that is par for the course for this setting.

We keep hearing real Night Shift Anons saying much the same thing as you have, that working the night shift really is a creepy experience, and I think that's part of why this setting is so resonant.
>>
>>30923538
I'm kinda happy im not the only one to be honest. The other thing that is prevalent in small towns is animals too. I see about six stray cats a night all different. Once I had a group of six deer cross the parking lot. The sometimes..Especially here you see shadows or glimpses of things moving that don't seem to be moving right. Another story to add on to this was I was getting the trash bags in the parking I heard someone walking around. A normal occurrence we've all heard footsteps with no one around. It was the fact I could you know like sense someone nearby that creeped me out.
>>
So, far there have been several propositions to categorize into less intense "breather" events (slightly weird) and more intense events (really weird).
How about another "category"? Stuff that seems weird at first and you may be preparing for the worst but turns out to be actually (and surprisingly here) mundane?
That UFO that crashed? It actually WAS a weather-balloon.
That werewolf roaming around? Actually a lost bear.
Etc.
>>
>>30923990
Not a bad idea. I had been thinking of trying to sort things into categories like "breather"/minor, "hazardous" / major and "BBEG" / once-per-campaign myself. I think that "fakeouts" like the ones you suggest definitely have a place here.
>>
>>30889722

Shitposting here, I just honestly wanted to say that, in a world of annons, The fact that some guy has picked up the nickname "razzle dazzle guy" makes me grin. It's an awesome name.
>>
>>30923990

Current Night Shift World separates events into three categories. Two broadly, one of which subdivides.

Solo Threats (subdivided between Mundane and Weird) - Things that happen which are not predicated on another thing. A serial killer would be a solo event, as would a one-off spatial anomaly. In practice, they function as breathers. PC's deal with them, then they're done. They don't hang around.

Threats - These are campaign/adventure arcs. Things happen, dunno why. Things happen more, start to find out why. Things come to a head, learn the reason why and fix it.

Now, within those categories we could probably subdivide in terms of SEVERITY, but that might just be a matter of how you construct the Moves and Weird Rating of the events and such.
>>
>>30923990
>Crazy-eyed stranger comes in, covered in blood and horrible scratches.
>Claims what attacked him was more beast than man, furious and hairy and wearing the shredded remains of a hunting jacket.

>He just wants a big gulp and a scratch off ticket.
>Later, PCs hear wierd noise outside.
>Snuffling, grumbling.
>Try to ignore it.
>Eventually hit the chores outside the station that MUST be done.
>Draw Straws.
>Alex looses.
>Alex nuts up (well, vulva's up, depending) and carries the garbage bags out through the side door.
>Motion-sensitive light comes on.

>Thousands of them

I've been thinking about levels. If the NSW guy uses the same mechanic as Dungeon world (exp for <7), the attendants should be able to pick moves like:

Keep The Change (Cashier):
When serving a customer and remaining professional and polite, The Cashier may add +1 paycheck to the night.

The Back of My Hand (stocker):
When searching for rare stock, roll +Int. 10+, there's enough for the whole night, 7-9, limited stock available, 6-, prepare for repercussions.

Etc..

>Grab copy of Wall Street Journal
>Roll Charisma
"Here you go. This rag is full of 'em. just flip to the financial section."

"Oh, he's in the bathroom trying to orchestrate a mass suicide."
>"No, we're here for the King of the Jews!"
"Hollywood is 2,000 miles due west, give or take a bit of longitude."

No XP system in NSW right now. Didn't make sense. Since it shirks much of the traditional 'we are heroes, lets go on adventures' premise, it didn't really follow that the player characters would have this appreciable upswing in competence. If they are around the gas station long enough to get good at their jobs, something has gone terribly terribly wrong. Characters should cycle with relative frequency, whether from death/firing/getting out/dark pigeon attack.
>>
>>30924802
Lifer (All Classes):
+1 to daily tasks

Jury Rigger (repairman/gas jockey):
+1 to diagnose and repair common equipment problems.

>>
>>30925856
Levels would give players more options when combatting robot zombie rats in the AC, while still keeping management happy. They shouldn't give more than a meagre boost since I couldn't see them reaching more than level 2 or 3 before giving their 2 weeks notice.
>>
>>30926011
In a way, aren't Management levels close enough to XP levels to take their place?
>>
>>30926011

I'm actually worried about making the PC's TOO competent as written, currently. Between an average of 8 Effort between four PC's, and decent opportunities to stack +3 modifiers on a roll for whatever a given Job is geared towards, I think there is plenty of bloat that needs to be cut from the numbers in NSW as is.

My current thinking is to invest more in the 'tags' system which Dungeon World is so fond of, which might let me give players more options without making it too easy for them to roll 10+ on the regular.

But honestly, I think the game just needs to be playtested for real. I might try a one-shot if my schedule permits, but the more help I get in that regard the faster this thing can take recognizable shape.
>>
>>30926035

Paycheck and Management were, from the get-go, supposed to be metrics of player success. The better they did, the higher those numbers would be.

And again, from the get-go players should be planning on cycling through to new characters. Average Threshold is 8 which means most Assistant Managers would cycle through in about three sessions if all went smoothly. Even the Stock Clerk could get out in the span of a single Threat if they were savvy. That's the plan, anyway.
>>
>>30926138
>>30926187
Exactly. It seems to me that as your Management and Paycheck go up and grant you access to more resources, passive buffs and moves, they make additional XP based levels clunky and superfluous.
>>
>>30926187
That's understandable. I'm just used to the DW exp. I can see now how I could use a high Management score now in a similar way.

Bump!

Perhaps this current thread's time is done, and we ought to allow TV Anon and NSW Anon start the next thread whenever they have significant updates to their projects.
>>
>>30927034

Hasn't this guy been in nearly every thread?
>>

If you say so.

I'm currently deciding if I should revisit "The Secret Fate Of All Life" with a tweak I've shamelessly stolen from another system. Basically, assign guidelines for GM's for something called 'harm'.

0 harm doesn't threaten you bodily, but inconveniences you otherwise. Knocks you aside, makes you drop what you're holding etc.
1 harm is painful, you could pass out or faint, it could knock you down, and you could take -1 forward
4 harm is where you're absotively in danger, you've got a serious debilitating injury, you'll bleed out if not taken care of.
6 harm is death. Gutted, savaged, mauled, vaporised, crushed, skewered. Y'done, kid.

If I used this semi-hp 'harm' system, I'd also change "Secret Fate Of All Life" to resemble "Defy Danger" from Dungeon World. You'd be rolling to mitigate how much harm is inflicted.

So let's say the Hollow Man is going after Carl, who had the wind knocked out of him earlier (-1 forward, harm 1). Its trying to disembowel him with a garden hoe (that sounds like a harm 6). If Carl rolls a 10+, he'll only take 1 harm. If he rolls a 7-9, he will take half its harm (3), and if he rolls six or less, he's taking the full brunt of it (6 harm).

Let's say Carl rolls an 8, and only takes half. That 3 harm is compounded by his current harm, and he passes the threshold into 'seriously fucked up'. Maybe the Hallow Man's swing breaks some ribs and Carl has ongoing trouble breathing (-1 ongoing).

What do you all think? Needlessly complicated, or better than the current "roll or die" thing I've got going on?
>>
>>30931957

An alternative is, rather than "The Secret Fate Of All Life" Move having flat rates of reduction, having it modified by the PC's Attribute.

So on a 10+, take 0 harm, on a 7-9, subtract the rolled Attribute from harm taken, 6 or less, take full harm.

Since Attribute bonuses are capped at +3, that means that by and large it function pretty much as a 'take half harm' when faced with death (harm 6), but has the advantage of contouring the roll to Attribute. The big tough guy with a high Con will have a better chance of weathering a blow, while the quickshit motherfucker with a good Dex will be better at side-slipping blows etc.
>>
>>30931957
>>30932039
I like the Alternative you provide a bit better because, if I'm understanding you correctly, it takes into account how the players have customized their Attendants.
>>
>>30922577
>Wendigos

I hate to be pedantic, but I'm fairly certain the proper plural of "wendigo" is "wendigowak".

That being said, a bunch of Night Shift employees who find themselves and the station in the middle of the woods, and those woods are full of monsters that amount to professional cannibals?

That sounds fun/horrifying/hilarious.

Note to self: see about converting this idea to Fate; shouldn't take too much effort. Run it with my IRL group next year.
>>
>>30932123
The more gaming system conversions we can get the better! Remember to keep us updated with whatever progress you make!
>>
So has anybody started a game of this yet?
>>
>>30932325
My understanding is that several Anons have run games in the setting so far, and that the players seem to have liked it.
>>
>>30932324
Will do. The biggest potential problem with Fate is that the PCs are considered to be competent, proactive people who live dramatic lives. And, really, only one of those is an issue: competency. Associates are proactive, to an extent (they do have to take action to solve whatever problem they're dealing with tonight, after all), and they certainly live dramatic lives.

But competency? That may be a bit of an issue.

Anyhow, my first thoughts are to lower the starting refresh a PC gets to 2, give them one free stunt instead of 3, lower the skill cap to +3 at start, and only give them 8 skills at character creation. That, and removing stress so all damage results in a consequence (or maybe just making it so that every stress box only absorbs one point of stress) and lowering the power of aspects (so a player can invoke his character's aspects as many times as they wish for rerolls, but only once if they're going for a +2 bonus to a roll).

In short, I need to avoid the issue my current Fate game has of the PCs being nigh-unstoppable juggernauts.

Before the thread falls off he board and a new one is started, I think that Night Shifters might be interests in watching the following for inspiration:

Its a Japanese horror anthology called "Kaidan Shin Mimibukuro,"
or "Tales of Terror from Tokyo and All Over Japan," where each episode is a self-contained five minute horror story. Even though most of the videos on the playlist have been deleted, there should be enough there to show that it has the same sort of surreal, otherworldly and occasionally comical horror happening to normal people that Night Shift does.
>>
>>30932523
I see your problem. A big part of the setting is the feeling if isolation and helplessness and with having to deal with things FAR above your pay-grade. If your players are gods amongst men or superhumanly over-competent, it's going to detract from both the spooky atmosphere and the value of their achievements.

A ragtag group of minimum-wagers fending off horrors from beyond the frozen foods section is much more impressive (and to me, more satisfying) than an übermensch doing the same.
>>
>>30932959
>>30932523
Why not just run it in CoC?

>Assuming this hasn't already been discussed
>>
>>30933046
It's come up before and would probably be ideal for this sort of setting, but part of the fun for a lot of folks is finding ways to reflux and recrunch their favorite systems to work with a fun new setting.
>>
>>30933112
Yeah, that's legit and cool. I'm considering running a one shot. Most likely with CoC. Do we have any IRC room? Or should I just toss up an email here and see what comes around?
>>
>>30933207
No IRC room as such yet. We've been working out of the threads, Google Docs and most recently the 1d4chan article.

>>30932676
Actually Kaidan Doesn't mean Terror, It means something like Weird as you can see some stories are Surreal and Weird and Comical, they just need to be Weird to be Kaidan.
>>
>>30933207
It seems like a perfect setting to run in UA.
>>
>>30933600
Hey, another language buff! Kaidan poster in question here. You're right of course, in that Kaidan aren't only horror stories, and can also include any tales belonging to the realm of the supernatural or the bizarre. "Tales of Terror," though a slightly inaccurate and heavy-handed title, is what the program is licensed as in the United States.
>>
>>30933619
Go and do it!
>>
>>30934095
I would, but Right now I want to run Scion.
>>
>>30932959
Indeed.

One of my players browses /tg/, and has seen these threads. Thankfully, he knows what to go for in case I actually run this.
>>
>>30936189
The element of surprise, while good to have, isn't necessary if you've got a player like your's that is enthusiastic about the setting.
>>
Oh, and to anyone s following this thread, is there anything we ought to do in preparation for when TV and NSW Anons return? We have a 1D4Chan page now, and the event Doc can really do with some organization and structure. We could continue sorting things by Structural Anomalies, Strange Foods, Peculiar Customers, etc, or we could sort things some other way, like by where in the gas station the event takes place.
>>
>>30936509

I'd like to see more contents on the chart.
>>
>>30936656
There are definitely a LOT more events I the threads that haven't been copied over to the Doc. We could ways begin scouring the old threads for events to add.

Like >>30924390
Or >>30913745
Or >>30895084
From this thread alone.
>>
>>30936509

The most useful thing you can do to help me (NSW anon) is to playtest. If I can put a check mark next to some of these mechanics and get them locked in as something I don't have to fiddle with then I'll be able to move onto new content quicker.
>>
>>30936509
Someone said that some events are quite similiar. maybe we can Change events that are similar and make new one in their place, and put the ones that are similiar into the Twist of events to Consider part of the list.
>>
>>30938411
I think that there are probably a number of events that can be compiled sideways on the Doc as twists, lists or remixes beside a general header in order to save space and make things more condensed.

>>30938346
I would playtest NSW, but I don't have an active gaming group right now!
>>
>>30938346
Well, Maybe I can Playtest the game, As a side attraction while everyone waits.
>>
>>30938780
Do I need anything else other than the rules in the rule doc?
>>
So, as it turns out, my group maaaaaaay have some time to start playing again. If so, I'll see if I can bring Night Shift to the table for some testing? Sound good with everyone?

At the very least, I'll come back with storytime for you all.
>>
>>30920937
Thanks buddy. I oughta spring this up on my group sometime to playtest it.
>>
Just extending my thanks to all the hard working people of this board who have been building and play testing this setting. It's no exaggeration to say that this is my favorite thing to have come out of /tg/ in a long time.
>>
The movie "Super 8" has some pretty Night Shifty moments in it, and being set in a small town in the late 1970s to early 1980s gives it the right sense of age and rural isolation.

If I ever get e chance to run this setting, I'm going to have some super 8 film footage found stashed somewhere with an old projector to give clues to what's up.
>>
>>30940280
Oh yeah. This is one of the few things in a long time that I have been actually proud to contribute to. My GM browses /tg/ and should be running it soon, so I'll try and post and tell you all how it went.
>>
>>30940506
Yeah, Also, if you want to go Japanesey there is a manga artist that does Horror/Weird stories, His name is Junjo Ito, He haves good ideas, but very bad endings. They end before the ending.

But anyway, some ideas are good. but it is another culture.

TV Anon here.

Guess who just finished a rough draft of the Pilot episode script?
>>
>>30941810
As long as it's not Lindelof, I'm cool with it

Can you give us a little hint as to what it's about? Pretty please?

It had been the third hour of shelling since the ice-cream ran out.

This situation had caught the night shift completely unawares, since it was mid-October and ice-cream sales had been on the wane for a while. To run dry was rare enough - to run dry during the night was unheard of.

After some discussion (most of which had to be conducted at top volume due to the thunderous explosions outside) the removal of the battered old ice-cream machine from the shop in August was deemed to be the major contributing factor to the decline in frozen-dairy-related revenue. How it was that the machine had tonight resumed its old post on one side of the chipped counter...well, that flummoxed them and was (loudly) concluded to be a bit of a puzzler.

What was however without question was that the failure to produce ice-cream was now directly responsible for the apocalyptic barrage that was currently crashing down on all sides of the station, all of which was so far missing both the building proper and the underground storage tanks. The staff resolved to simply continue their shift in the hope that none of the Things outside would make it through the shelling, as there was no more ice-cream to appease them with.

If someone makes a new thread, be sure to add "Playtesters needed" to the subject, and make it clear it's not a friggin' quest thread.
>>
>>30932344
I'm currently running it on some forums, but last time I posted a few anons yelled at me and said I was plagiarizing.
>>
>>30945461
I thought that was a bit uncalled for. No big difference between playing it on a forum and playing it in a group. Good on you for having fun with this setting Anon
>>
>>30945461
A bit of an update: They're nearing the end of the first night. It's 3 AM and they've managed to make a fine mess of the store. A shotgun shredded a bunch of candy off the shelves, there's three dead rednecks in the parking lot, and they still need to clean the bathroom and mop. One of the characters got trapped in the mirror world for awhile while his evil mirror self cut the phone lines with a knife.

At the moment they're facing down Mothman after stunning him briefly with a tranquilizer gun one of the rednecks left behind. It really has been a lot of fun, and the players are having a blast. I have big plans for the second night and have been compiling music and photos for them. I'm pretty excited.

I'm planning on running another one using the NSW rules, but I wasn't sure if I needed the Dungeon World core rulebook or anything to know how to play. Either way, I'm still incorporating it into the game.

same anon who emailed NSW anon about a short story he wrote too. I really need to get working on that speaking of which. I told him I'd send him what I had by saturday.
>>
>>30945737
I did make a point of mentioning that these weren't all my ideas and let them know where I got the ideas from. I think there problem was more the forums that I was running them in. Same with the guy who keeps calling it a quest. People just hate shit.
