Skill checks are made by rolling 1d100. 1-5 is a critical success, 96-100 a critical fail. Rolls are the best of the first three posts, unless a critical fail is rolled. A normal success will cancel a critical fail and count as a normal fail.

Social skill checks have no DC and cannot crit; an average of the first three rolls will be used.

Short thread today. Four hours.
~~~
It’s early Monday evening, and you’re playing Quest for Arcadia. Lily and Wolf are still keeping watch for the boat that was supposed to pick up the meat, and in the meantime having fun at the beach. In the city, the atmosphere isn’t so good; word’s got out that trouble’s brewing, and players have temporarily put aside their differences to come together and defend it.
Mason hasn’t logged in today, and without his calming influence, people are just looking for trouble. You managed to rescue Shrike from an argument earlier. You also found Melissa, who has rolled a gorgeous male avatar but is having trouble working out what to name him. The three of you are making your way back to Shrike’s house to see if Trish has logged in yet.
“Can you eat that food?” Melissa’s avatar asks as you walk past some cafes; he sounds nothing like her, and you have to keep reminding yourself who he really is.
“Yeah,” Shrike says.
“That’s amazing. Everything is so real.” He keeps pausing and touching the sides of buildings. Melissa’s not quite as experienced a gamer as you, and may not have even played a game via a neural interface before.
Shrike leads you away from the markets deeper into the city. There are fewer players here, and it looks like this is where the meat and the roleplayers have retreated to for now. You occasionally catch snatches of overdramatic conversations, and small groups of meat are just hanging out, watching you go past expressionlessly. You climb up and down funny little flights of stairs, and hurry through tiny courtyards and down winding streets. Shrike seems to know this place like the back of his hand.
>Ask him for more details about his house. How did he get it, what does he use it for?
>Ask Shrike about his new bow. Could be useful to know what it’s capable of.
>Get Melissa on your contacts list ASAP and start explaining the game.
>Write in.
Aww yiss, Arcadia's my favorite quest right now and this is my first time actually participating live
Can't we do both? Adding her to contacts takes a second, doesn't it?
>>
>>30897932 (Welcome aboard. Good to have you.)
>>30898031
"That bow looks pretty impressive," you tell Shrike, and he grins. "What does it do?"
"Well." He unslings it from his back and looks it over like a proud parent. "It doesn't have any Piece in it, so it's not magic, but it's got a lot more power now. Trish and I spent some time testing it out earlier. It looks like it'll punch though most mundane armour pretty easily." He frowns. "Good against meat, I guess. Might even go through multiple targets if they're not armoured."
"Nice."
"I notice yours got a bit shinier as well," he says.
"Yeah, can upgrade the arrows by feeding the bow, rather than making arrows."
"That's going to save you a ton of cash in the long run," Shrike says. "Making arrows isn't super expensive, but it's adds up."
"Hey, um, whatever your name is," you grin at Melissa's avatar. "Take your mirror out, I want to show you something."
"Sebastian? Hm I dunno."
You explain how contacts work and add Melissa's nameless avatar to your list. He adds you as well.
"Contact me any time," you say. "If you get in trouble."
Shrike finally leads you into a building. It's an apartment block, really, but built in the beautiful style of the other buildings here. He takes you to the third floor.
There are a couple of male avatars making out in the hallway. Shrike puts his head down and hurries past, but Melissa's avatar breaks stride and stares.
"Come on," you say, tugging his arm.
"Yeah. Wow."
"I don't know how we managed to get an apartment in the gay quarter," Shrike mutters. He unlocks one of the doors and ushers you in. "Trish? You back."
"Welcome back," Trish calls.
Shrike introduces Melissa's avatar, as best he can, at this point. Melissa is still working on a name.
"Wolfgang?"
"We already know a Wolf," Shrike says.
"Amadeus?"
Trish and Shrike have a lovely but small apartment. Sparsely but comfortably decorated. In the center of the room are several low couches grouped around a small fountain in which fish swim.
Their balcony overlooks the street, and wind chimes hang from the doorway.
>Stop her there. Amadeus is fine. This could take hours otherwise.
>Ask about the apartment.
Other two choices don't seem very important. We need something to call her by, and her brainstorming will get annoying.
"Amadeus is fine! It's good, very dramatic."
"You think so? Okay, Amadeus it is."
"Finally," Shrike mutters.
Amadeus starts exploring the apartment, and watching the fish. "So real," he keeps saying.
Trish smiles, "I was like that at first too."
"Why do you guys have a house anyway?" you ask. "And how did you get it?"
"There are NPC landlords," Trish explains. "We have to pay rent but it's not a huge amount; even meat can afford it. There aren't always places available though."
Shrike flops down on a couch. "We use it for storage mostly. If you collect materials and trophies that you don't want to lug around, these places are secure. Unlike reality, no one can break in. Roleplayers like 'em too."
"Like those guys we saw on the stairs," Amadeus says.
"Yeaaah. Them."
"It's useful for us as meat because it gives us a place to meet up. If we can't find each other we come back here," Trish says. "But we don't actually stay here much. It would be a waste of playing time."
There clearly isn't all that much to do. You think it would be a nice place to study if such a thing were allowed by the game.
"Well, we're all here," Shrike says. "What should we do now?"
> Amadeus badly needs some gear and experience. Head out of the city and do some grinding.
> You need cash. Head somewhere a bit more dangerous, like under the city or into the chasm.
> There are hundreds of bored players around. Maybe this would be a good time to mount an expedition to the Underground.
"Let's try out our new bows and help Amadeus get some better gear."
"You'd do that?" Amadeus asks.
"Yeah of course. I got you into this game, I'm not going to abandon you. And given what's been happening lately, it would be good to level you up a bit."
"I'm game," Trish says.
"Yeah, getting out of the city sounds like a good idea to me," Shrike agrees. "At least until things calm down."
There are two ways out of the city at ground level.
Also has any sort of map of the known world been created yet? It doesn't have to show everything, but a little representation of where everything is would be awesome. Anyway, this is an amazing quest so keep up the good work!
"Let's head out over the main bridge," you suggest. "There probably aren't going to be a lot of people that way."
"Man, that's the way I got here, a long time ago." Trish grins. "Sure, why not. It's been so long it's probably changed a lot."
"Has anyone tried to draw a map of this place?" you ask.
"People draw mudmaps, like, in the earth and stuff," Shrike says. "But there are no pens or paper here, so I've never seen one. The world changes anyway; no map would stay good for long."
Trish picks up her sword and slings her pack over her back. There's no point in hanging around, and the four of you leave the apartment. The hallway is empty when you walk to the stairs.
You move swiftly through the city, but no one gives you trouble; there are probably too many of you, and your bow is enough to indicate your player status.
"Hey, this is where I came in," Amadeus says, when you reach the bridge. He's pointing at a spot a little way from the city gates.
"You two are very lucky you spawned so close," Trish says.
As you head over the bridge your mirror chimes. It's Lily.
"Hey, just thought I'd let you know I'm logging off for the night." She's put her clothes back on. You can still hear laughter and music in the background. "Wolf's taking over watch for now. Contact him if you need anything."
"Um, Lily, this might seem odd, but has anything strange been happening to you in real life?" you ask.
Lily looks strangely shocked by the question, like you just used bad language without provocation. "Uh. No," she says. She doesn't even ask why you want to know. "Anyway I should probably-"
>>30899208
>>30899160
"Hang on, got any tips for levelling a newbie?" you ask Lily. You don't want to end a conversation on such a weird note, and Lily's expression relaxes.
"Well, as long as they get one hit in, or get hit themselves, they'll get exp. Everyone who contributes will. So if you meet something tough have them jump in and then back off again. Also waking up slaves is good for exp, if you happen across any. That's it, really. Have fun!" She grins. "Goodnight, Liandra. I'll see you tomorrow."
"Goodnight."
Lily ends the contact.
You walk across the solid stone bridge. Below you is mist, and above you is a clear, bright evening sky in which a pair of almost dazzling bluish moons drift. On the other side of the bridge, you can see steep hills clad in thick forest.
"Couldn't someone try and make ink and paper?"
"Out of what?" Trish says. "I mean, every time someone tries to write something, anything, the NPCs come and wash it away or destroy it. You can't even place bricks in the shape of letters on the ground. They just come and mess them up."
"It's really not a good idea," Shrike says. "It must be a rule for a reason."
"That's pretty strange," Amadeus says.
Shrike lights a torch he takes from his pack as you approach the end of the bridge. A dirt road winds off into what looks like damp, tangled jungle. The air smells rich and earthy and alive.
You step off the bridge and head along the road. Shrike's torch immediately becomes useful here, as the canopy above blocks out most of the light from the moons.
The four of you fall silent for a few moments, listening. You hear tiny rustlings in the undergrowth, but there's very little breeze and the trees are still.
"Do you remember much about this place?" Shrike asks Trish.
"I was with a large group. We didn't stop for anything; we were just trying to get to the city."
"It's beautiful," Amadeus says, admiring the flowers that open as soon as the light from Shrike's torch reaches them, their petals all the colours of a sunset.
"Be better in daylight," Shrike says. "If we hit trouble I'll drop the torch, but it'll keep burning on the ground for a while, so we'll still have light."
The road isn't exactly straight, and soon you cannot see the bridge. Sometimes you hear rushing water. You find yourself climbing upwards, and big jagged blocks of stone covered in moss and fungi sometimes rise out of the earth next to the road.
You've been walking for about ten minutes when you hear a snarling sound from up above you. When you glance up you see the light reflecting in several sets of eyes.
You flip backwards, lithely doging out of the way as a creature the size of a large housecat drops down towards your head. It lands in the dirt with a thump.
It has four paws, bright orange fur, a fluffy tail and big shining amber eyes. A flap of skin between its front and back legs implies that it can glide. It doesn't appear to have a nose or mouth.
"It's so cute!" Amadeus says. "Do we have to kill it?"
Trish yanks Amadeus back as more of the critters drop from the trees. There are five in all.
Shrike draws his sword rather than going for his bow, since they're at such close range, holding the torch in his off hand.
"Come on!" you say. Shrike and Trish swing into action as well. Trish blocking one of the creatures as it leaps at her with her sword, while Shrike prefers to dodge.
"But they're too- gyaagh!" One of the creatures rears up on its hind legs, and where you'd expect to be a rib cage is in fact a gaping mouth with teeth. It leaps at Amadeus, who hasn't raised his staff, and latches on to his chest.
"Seriously? Noob," Shrike mutters.
Amadeus slams his hands together and PRAYs. His skin erupts in wicked boney spikes and the creature drops to the ground. "Right!" he roars, his chest streaked with blood. "You'll pay for that!"
You smack your glaive into another critter preparing to pounce and your blade goes right through it's spine.
You have slain jungle ribmaw.
"Die, you motherfucker!" Amadeus sends the creature that attacked him flying with his staff, and it thuds, dead, into a tree. Trish's sword makes short work of the ribmaw in front of her, while Shrike seems to be fencing with his, it keeps darting out of the way. Eventually he feints with his sword and hits it with the torch in his other hand. It mews in pain through its ribs and you can smell burning hair.
Trish and Amadeus turn on the remaining ribmaw, while the one you damaged earlier leaps at you again.
Trish notices your confusion. "Avatars can do different things with that ability. I dunno how it works though. A player would probably have a better idea."
You explain the ins and outs of levelling up to Amadeus, while Shrike kicks the corpses around a bit.
"Trash mobs," he says. "Nothing useful on 'em." Swarms of black butterflies start drifting in, apparently drawn to the fresh corpses.
"That's good for newbies though," Trish says. "Not too tough."
"I didn't really consider what such a realistic world would be like in battle," Amadeus says, putting his mirror away. "I mean, look at all this blood." It's splattered across the dusty road. "You could dissect these things if you wanted." He crouches down and stares at one of the dead ribmaws.
"Check this out." He has something in the palm of his hand.
"It looks like a piece of plastic to me," Trish says. And it does. But you also know it's a Piece of Arcadia.
"It's so beautiful," Amadeus says. "Is this crazy? It makes me so happy."
You explain how the Pieces work.
"But don't you see," he says. "I get it now. We have to find Arcadia, not just Pieces, and we're not going to find it by sticking to roads."
"We're not here to look for Arcadia," you say. "We're here to get you some levels."
"But otherwise what's the point!?" He shouts at you, and you recoil in surprise. His voice doesn't echo; it just seems to be swallowed up by the jungle.
Trish and Shrike look a bit startled as well. Amadeus's face is flushed and he's breathing heavily. "Why else are we here?" he mutters.
"Are you all right?" Trish asks.
"Yeah. I was just-" he looks at the Piece of Arcadia he's still clutching in his hand. "Really excited; I was sure I was on the right track, you know?"
"No," Shrike says.
You cautiously let go of his arm, and he doesn't run off again.
"Okay. Good. Don't run off; you really don't want to die. If you do, you won't see any Pieces of Arcadia ever again."
"I think you woke something up," Trish says.
You listen intently, and from somewhere deep in the forest, you can hear a crunch, like a large rotten branch snapping. You think you can hear heavy footsteps.
"What should I do?" Amdeus asks.
"Get a hit in if it's safe, otherwise stay back," you suggest.
You fit one of the bloodletter shards into the mouth of the snake on your bow, and its jaws close around the piece of metal. You notice Shrike notching an unusual arrow as well.
There's nothing you can do but wait. You can hear something big moving through the forest now, closer and closer.
"I'm really sorry," Amadeus says.
"Something this big is bound to drop something good," Trish says with a smile. "Don't worry about it. I didn't want to kill ribmaws all night anyway."
The undergrowth shudders and finally the creature emerges. It's about the size of a transit van, and roughly shaped like a pig. Huge serrated boney plates line its hide, and its mouth is lined with large tusks. Its tail swishes as it regards you all with porcine rage.
"It's a boneboar," Trish says.
"So glad I have my new bow," Shrike mutters.
Let Shrike shoot first and try to hit the spot he did. I don't know if our bow can punch through bone so well.
The beast lowers its head and charges at Trish, being the closest. Shrike's arrow flies and yours is close behind. You can hear the crack as his arrow splinters right through the boney plate on the boar's shoulder and blood wells from the wound.
Your arrow finds its mark as well, although it makes a different sound. Nevertheless, the bloodletter iron does its job and another stream of gore joins the first.
Trish waits until the last moment and ducks to the side, swinging her sword at the boar's head. The metal bites into its leathery flesh, and she opens up the side of its face. It turns on her squealing in protest, foamy spit dripping from its jaws.
Amadeus runs in and smacks his staff against the beast's hide while it's facing the other way. It doesn't seem to do much at all, really.
"Take my sword," Shrike calls, while he notches another arrow. "It's not gonna be great, but it'll be better than that stick.
Trish switches to the defensive, trying to keep her blade between her and the boar's mouth. You can see that the boney plates don't cover it completely, there are gaps, but they'll be extra hard to hit.
You loose another arrow and this time it juts out of the skin between the creature's plates over its ribs. Shrike isn't bothering to aim as carefully, and his arrow thuds right through another boney plate. You notice that both the wounds you've caused and Shrike's first, continue to bleed freely; the boar's shoulder is soaked in blood.
Trish parries or tries to and darts away, neither she nor the boar are very light on their feet.
Amadeus tosses his staff aside and runs over to Shrike to take the sword from his belt.
"Thanks."
"Don't lose it."
The boar rears up, monsterously unlike a normal pig and lunges at Trish. She braces herself and is knocked back off her feet, her sword protecting her from the beast's bite.
"Oh no!" Amadeus runs in as the boar looms over Trish, who is trying to keep her guard up as well as get back on her feet. "Diediediediedie!" Amadeus hacks at the beast's neck.
It turns and looks at him. "Shit," he says, gazing into its eyes.
"Run!" You yell, but he's already got the idea and is moving. The boar turns away from Trish to follow as he flees down the road.
So guys, when we find another Piece of Arcadia, let's put the one we have into our clothes (or whatever clothes we buy) for protection and the other into our glaive so it doesn't lag behind. Then we can start working on super boots.
Sound okay?
You run in to get the boar in range, take a deep breath, and PREACH. The boar reels for a moment as you run away from it again to resume your earlier position. Shrike keeps shooting.
Trish hauls herself to her feet and runs in to attack the boar while it's stunned, swinging her sword up high over her head and bringing it down on the creature's armoured back. You can hear the crack of bones splintering under the force and weight of the weapon.
The wounds on the boar still bleed. It's still stunned for a moment.
Amadeus puts some distance between him and the boar and then turns to see what's happening.
You fire another arrow but in your haste to attack before the stun wears off the shot goes wild. The boar shakes off your stun, but it does seem to have lost a bit of its mobility thanks to the constantly-bleeding arrow-holes and the other chunks taken out of its body.
It squeals angrily, wheeling around and glaring at you. And then it seems to think better of it and turns and heads back the way it came, towards the forest, leaving a trail of blood.
One more volley with Shrike. We chase after it right after.
Also, I don't like that system, Arcadian. We'll pretty much never crit fail. Stick to only crit passes and fails canceling each other out?
We pretty much never fail, period. I don't recall seeing any DCs below 50, and that only has a 12.5% chance of failing.
>>
Rolled 30
>>30903006
Maybe the crit is only cancelled if the other two are passes? Makes it more likely easy DCs won't be fumbled and keeps the risk of harder ones.
>>
>>30903006 (Someone crunched the numbers for me and the old system threw up crits way too often as the early combats showed. Given how lethal they can be in this game, this system knocks them back to a more reasonable number (which will vary depending on DC of course.))
>>30903112 (A possibility.)
>>30903103 (Yeah, given the style of game I'd rather not have you miss too often. Ordinary attacks should work often enough as they do in most mmos. Ideally the placing and ability use is where the action is.)
>>30903058
>>30903046
You fire another arrow and it thuds into the beast's back. Trish and Amadeus converge on it.
And it whirls again to try and warn them off. It seems to be weakening, further, snapping and squealing but less steady on its legs.
It's inevitable at this point, eventually its legs can't hold it anymore and it thumps into the dust.
You have slain mature boneboar. Your mirror chimes as does Amadeus's; you both levelled up.
Sorry I had to cut that combat a bit short, but I really have to go. I'll leave the thread tab open so I'll get any comments later on when I return. I'll probably run same time next week. Check twitter to make certain.
Thanks for playing, everyone.
Thanks for running today even though you didn't have much time! Always look forward to the thread.
I have some questions I'd appreciate if you could come back to next thread or something. I'd like to have a better idea of what Ash's avatar looks like. So...
The glaive head is faintly green because of the Verdant steel, right? What colour's the haft?
Her bow is white but does it have, say, green accents because of the snake motif applied to it?
Are her boots just brown leather and grey metal? Would it be possible to colour them?
>>
>>30903378 (just got back from lunch before heading off again. I can answer here.)
1) The haft is just wood. Since it's nothing special it's probably a fairly ordinary shade of brown.
2) The bow is white wood but it looks like it's been shattered and put back together. In between the wood pieces are green scales. Picture bark clinging to a tree, only instead of a tree it's a snake.
3) Boots are as you say. She could probably find an NPC who could colour them, given the variety of outfits she's seen in the world so far someone must be able to.
Hope that's useful.
>>
Bah, shame I missed the thread. But good stuff as usual, Arcadian! Looking forward to the next one.
This question has probobly been asked before, but what does Ash's in-game avatar look like, exactly? I think it may be prudent to add a description to the pastebin.
>>
Short brown girl.
So, burning 'SILENCE' into something ingame, great idea or best idea? It can only result in good things
