Earth had six extinction events. Five natural, one anthropic. An ever escalating and desperate war unleashed weapons barely even dreamt of until almost every living creature on Earth had died. It was then that the Dragon appeared, dragging the souls of the dead back from beyond. Humans repopulated, long extinct species reappeared, new flora and fauna, but some souls were meant to stay banished. The demons took new foothold on Earth.

War began anew, and humans were losing. They dare not use the same weapons that destroyed everything indiscriminately, they needed something new. They needed men and women with purpose, who could rival the destructive power of the abominations that roamed the land. So they made you. Using technology hastily researched and poorly contained, they captured demons and slaved their souls to the bodies of their young soldiers to use their power against them. You had grown up during the rise of the demons, lost your home and family to them. When the military found you, all you had was your name, Joshua.

When you were barely old enough to be called a man, they sent you onto the front lines with your new brothers and sisters. You were a success, and every battle was victory for humanity. Your bodies were stronger, faster, more resilient, ageless, the best that a human could be. But you couldn’t be everywhere, and human territory continually shrunk, and shrunk. You were still losing the war.

The war only slowed eighty years later, when they began construction of the Annihilation Wall. The Dragon had gifted humanity with a method to destroy any living creature that approached, a wall of death. You even had time to fall in love and get married to a girl named Lauren. For eighty years, all you had known was war and the loss of your brothers and sisters to the inexhaustible supply of demons. She gave you a glimpse at a true life. But those blissful times did not last. All of humanity was betrayed.

You were betrayed.
>>
You suck air into your sore and waterlogged lungs. Your entire body hurts and feels weak, but you’re alive. Your memory is a mess, shattered and barely cohesive. You may have been poisoned, finally broke under the mental stress, or someone blew your head off. But you’re alive.

Water surrounds you on all sides, judging by the gentle lapping of waves against wood. That’s not good, you need to get off the water. But, judging by the rough wood your drenched body is laying on, you’re on some form of ship or raft. You can hear the crew talking nearby.

You catch your breath as you stare at the vast blue sky above you. There’s the silhouette of a Roc circling far above you. Unusual for them to venture outside of the clouds, it must be starving. And so are you. Your regeneration took quite a toll, and must have gnawed away at your body to rebuild your mind. But you can recover from that as well.

You roll over and jump to your feet, making only the slightest of noises as your wet hair flops around. You must have been out of commission for a long time for it to have grown to this length. There are a number of barrels lined up at the back of the boat, they’re filled with fish, must be a fishing vessel that pulled you out of the water.

You duck behind them before the crew spots you, only getting a glimpse above the railing. The water extends for kilometers in every direction, but you can faintly see shore. If there’s nothing down there, you could make the swim, but staying dry would be preferable.

“Okay, that guy was dead. He was deader than dirt,” a young man says.

“What, did he get up and jump at you or something?” an old man responds. Their accent is strange, you haven’t the faintest idea where they might be from, not American, Russian, Chinese, and the lesser colonies should have all been wiped out.

“He’s fucking gone. I fucking told you it was a bad idea to fish that corpse out of the water. It’s a whole new fucking world down there, and now we have one of them with us,” the youth shouts back. He had approached near you, but is backing away.

“Those are just stories lad. If he’s up and moving, it just means he wasn’t dead in the first place.”

“His skull was caved in! He was floating face down! You don’t get more dead than that!” the kid shouts. You hesitantly touch the back of your head and confirm that the skull didn’t recent well.

Your stomach acid and constitution is more than enough to eat just about anything. It's a matter of taste. Eating your kills was standard practice for you on extended missions.

Magpies and Rocs happen to make delicious roasts. Marauders taste like pork. Stay away from dopplegangers though, unless you want to trip balls.

I've been writing by the way.
>>

So MC wouldn't care eating raw but would prefer cooked?
Alright, then we could eat some fish to replenish ourself
>>
“Who did you say was deader than dirt?” you ask as you stand up from behind the barrels. The sloop is only a few meters long and doesn’t even have any proper equipment. They must fish by hand, or they’re merely transporters. The one near you is the youth, seventeen at the oldest and healthy enough to be drafted into the military, he shouldn’t be wasting himself on a menial task like this. The older man seems to be related to him, perhaps the father. He’s obese and leaning on the railing to take weight off what seems to be a failing knee.

What’s worse is that everything is entirely anachronistic. Everything’s made of wood and hemp, their cloths are rough cotton. Instead of an engine for the ship, they have sails. The only metal you can even see is the end of the docking hook, and a knife strapped to the youth’s hip.

“We thought you were. My name is Francis, I am the captain who saved your life,” the old man says as he smiles and steps forward. “This is my nephew, Louis. And who might you be?”

“My name is Joshua Thirteen, UNAAF Special Forces Division Seven,” you answer. You grab hold of the barrels in front of you, taking some of the weight off of your knees. Glancing down, your hands are wrinkled and knobby, the cartilage kept growing. You quickly check your nose and ears and find them quite a bit larger than they used to be. Even Lauren wouldn’t recognized you like this, but if you shave them off they should grow back properly.

You glance back up at Francis and Louis, both of them seem a bit confused. “The military?” you add.

“I think you might be a ways from home. I’ve never heard of any UNAAF,” Francis says as he walks over to a seat in the middle of the deck. Everyone in the entire world should know about the UNAAF, they’re the most successful armed forces to ever oppose the demons.

“Where am I, actually?”

“Well, we fished you out of the sea, and soon we’ll be heading upriver to the capital of Lyr,” Francis answers. Louis has his hand on the knife, but is too far away from you to be a threat.

You check the air again, the water is fresh, this is no sea. “Do you at least have some food? I’m starving.”

“What sea? There are hundreds of seas, but only about five that are freshwater.”

“The Sea. You must have brain damage old man. There’s only one Sea, and it’s this one,” Louis responds. “The others are myths.”

You shake your head and think for a moment. When your stomach churns on itself, you lick your lips and glance at the captain. “Can I at least eat some of the fish?”

Francis leans back. “Those are just carp. People don’t eat carp. They’re meant for Krah and Lasttier. Go ahead if you’re that hungry.”

“That’s fine,” you mumble before grabbing the first fat fish you can find. You bite into its cold and salty side, ripping the meat off of its spine. The fish starts twitching and squirming in your hand till you break its spine. You quickly devour the fish and discard the carcass before grabbing another. Then another.

You finally stop when Louis shouts at you, “Hey man, you’re bleeding.” You put the fish down and turn your stained hands over. It got in your beard as well. You run your tongue over your gums before opening wide to pluck out the bones. You shrug and leave the fish where it is, lest you overfill yourself.

“Thank you,” you say, wiping the blood from your lips. “Now, I have to ask how you haven’t heard of the UNAAF, they’re the most successful armed forces against the demons ever. Everyone in the world should know of them.”

Francis shrugs. “Us here in Lyr haven’t heard of them. Now, would you mind putting on a pair of pants?” he asks, nodding his head at Louis who rolls his eyes and walks over to a small passage into the hull of the ship.

“I’m sorry, I’m just having a hard time catching up with things I suppose. And, please, can we hurry to shore? I’d really really like to be off the water. As I’m sure you can understand.”

“Ship goes as she goes. We don’t control the winds, they control us,” Francis responds as he looks up to the sky. You take a glance at the sails, he’s not maximizing speed in the least. If you turned them a bit, you could get to shore in half the time.

“Why are you even using sails? Surely an electric motor would be more efficient in this day and age.”

“A what now?” the fat man asks as his nephew tosses you a pair of rough trousers.

“A motor. A machine that converts electrical energy to kinetic energy.”

“You must be from somewhere very far away indeed. We here abide by the Dragon Code.”

“What year is this?”

“Eighth year of Lyanna’s reign.”

“And that is?”

Francis’s eyes narrow as he looks at you. “Look, I will have no trouble on my ship. It wouldn’t be right to throw you back in the drink where you came from, but I won’t deal with you any more than I have to, heathen.”

“Heathen?”

“The Dragon passed down his scriptures to the lady Lyrra one hundred years ago, the great code of life. What is right, and what is wrong. And we abide by it, we do not bring down the wrath of the demons on our very heads like you would,” the man states angrily as you look back up at the sky. You step into the trousers and pull them up as you watch the Roc. The demon bird is circling ever closer to you with each pass. You can see the crimson feathers shining in the light already.

“That’s going to attack this ship in just a moment,” you say as you tie the hemp belt into a functional knot.

“Don’t be daft, the birds never land, only watch,” Francis scoffs at you.

“Uncle, it is getting closer,” Louis says as he stumbles away from the rail.

“Don’t be foolish. It would never do that.”

“It is, it will dive in a few seconds.”

“It’s coming for him uncle! We should have never taken him from the water. The demons come for their ilk! Only a demon could have survived this, just think for a moment!” the youth shouts as he pulls out the knife and points it at you.

The Roc screeches and folds its wings.

Well, a Roc's major wingspan is only about four meters on average, and this one is a bit smaller. But you'd need to hit it with all the force of a .50. And that's just a bit unreasonable to be accurate with. If you were to miss, you wouldn't get another attempt.
>>
So, there's one vote to scale the mast and intercept it, and another to just let it hit the ship.

You all agree it would be better to take the knife than grapple it to death, so there's that.

“It wants to eat you as much as it wants to eat me kid,” you shout as you vault over the barrels and run towards him and the mast.

“Stay back you demon. If I kill you, it’ll leave, and you’re just an old man,” Louis shouts as he holds the shaking knife at you. You grunt and let him stab at you as you run. He’s untrained, probably hasn’t even been in a fight. Your hands glide around his, grabbing onto his wrist. One quick jerk later and both of his thumbs snap, relinquishing the knife unto you.

The kid shouts and falls to his knees as you run past him. “I’m not that old,” you grumble as you jump up on the mast. You get a handful of rope and use it to throw yourself up. The Roc screeches again and opens its maw as you seat yourself atop the mast. At the last moment, you jab the knife forward and slice into the birds neck.

The handle catches on it though. Your arm jerks back as the bird tumbles past the mast. As you flip through the air, you grab hold of its chest and rip the knife free, to smash the blade through its ribcage. The cheap metal of the knife snaps off as you break the ribs of the demon. You grit your teeth and growl as it crashes into the railing of the ship and breaks through, dunking both of you in the water.

It thrashes back and forth with all four of its wings, but the sudden shock has disoriented it. If you let it get over you, the flailing beast stands too good a chance of bludgeoning you back underwater. Better to kill it now. But the cold water is sealing around you like a coffin.

The bird is screeching and thrashing, making a mess of noise on the surface of the water, shouting out in every direction to whatever is down in the water. When it twists, you get dunked back under the waves, fear locks up your muscles.

But you can’t get out till this thing is dead, so you drop the knife and ball your hand up. You punch through the stab wound you gave the demon, burying your arm in its porous chest cavity. You can’t see it of course, but you can feel the triple beat of the black heart. The roc leaps from the water with you hanging from it as you grab hold of its heart and pull.

The black organ comes free, squirting blood across the ship as you drop down. Its wings fold and it crashes into the barrels of fish, scattering them back into the water. But the demon stops moving. You flick the heart away and wipe the blood off as best you can. You grunt as you push off the ground and get back to your feet. The drop was only a few meters, but it shouldn’t have hurt as much as it did.

You need a proper meal. And roc tastes great on an empty stomach.

When you approach it though, it jumps back to life, swaying back and forth on its hind wings. It turns back to you with blood seeping out of its chest in periodic bursts. Two hearts, must be a crossbreed between a red and a blue roc or something.

“You’ll get us killed you bastard!” Francis shouts as he flees to the prow of the ship, as far away from the beast as he can get.

“Just get us back to shore before something else comes to eat us. I can handle an oversized bird,” you shout at the fat captain as you wave the roc over. The demon waddles closer to you, swinging its massive beak back and forth. It wasn’t afraid of you before, but it is now. You make sure to impose yourself between it and the other two, to make sure it can’t make off with other food. You laugh as it shrieks at you.

It starts snapping at you and pulling its head back. But the thing is just an animal, predictable. You grab its beak when it snaps at you next. Upper jaw in one hand and lower in the other, you pull it forward. You twist its head around as it freaks out and starts trying to fly away, but can’t with its neck upside down.

With a quick tug, you snap its lower jaw off of its head, shredding the skin from the bone. Blood starts pour anew from its wounds as you grab the broken beak like a blade. The roc starts trying to fly away so hard that he spins around, dragging his tail across the deck and knocking everything over as you keep its head twisted upside down.

You pull the beak back to expose the wound in its neck, and smash your improvised weapon into it. Blood squirts across you as most of the tendons sever. The tension in its neck goes limp, but the wings are still smashing into the wooden deck, breaking the boards with every strike.

So you dig your hand in and grab hold of its spine, and rip the spinal cord in half.

It struggles only for a moment more before gong limp. You drop it down to the deck and wipe the blood off on your pants. You’re actually out of breath from that. When you look at your hands again though, the skins been shredded off from the maw, and half the tendons are broken.

It's a day trip sloop with a crew of two. It doesn't need those kinds of commodities.
>>
>>30919345
It's just a fishing boat and we can eat meat raw without any side effects

“Joshua Thirteen, UNAAF Special Forces Division Seven. I’m a soldier,” you say as you test your tendons. Only half of your fingers are still moving. This’d heal a lot faster if you had some Ambrosia fluid, or even just stitches for them, or at least a full stomach. But a roc is really just a very large goose.

“This is the last trip to Fish Port I’m ever making,” Francis says as he touches two fingers to his heart, then to his forehead and back again.

“Let’s just get back to shore before anything else comes,” you say as you sit down next to your kill. The skin is already torn, so you dig your working fingers inside it and start tearing it open. The roots of the feathers are like tiny razors, till you rip them out to give yourself a safe hand hold. With half the ribs broken, the flight muscles have loosed off considerably, allowing you to start peeling off slabs of meat to devour.

The ship is still moving along towards shore, but the crew are staring at you in mild fear. When you glance back at where the ship was though, where the fish are floating in the water, you look just in time to see them devoured. Something great and large sweeps up from the depths, breaking the surface only for the moment to swallow the chum and disappear again, leaving only a small vortex.

You had been in the water with that thing.

“Are you a demon?” Louis asks as you swallow another strip of meat.

So, are we feeling like a supersoldier?
>>
>>30919741
apparently we are only at 0.1% of our part. It should be better once we fully regenerate.
>>
>>30919786
Presumably, this was a soft serve monster for soft serve Joshua. The threats will scale with our power. If this didn't feel like super soldier material, then something has to change, no?

Or did this just feel a bit goofy because we have no scale for how strong a roc is?
>>
>>30919872
I'm kinda hoping that we will be overpowered for most of the quest. Wouldn't feel like a supersoldier who has taken one entire armies full of very dangerous foes quest otherwise. I don't want level scaling.
>>
“No, I’m not. Just a man with practice. That thing in the water just now, that’s a demon. This bird I’m eating? Demon. Me? Human. I’m alive because I’m a nastier son of a bitch than they are. This thing fought me, so I ripped its heart out and beat it to death with its own jaw. It’s only natural, that’s how the world works,” you explain as you stare at your right hand and focus. With food in your gut slowly digesting, it’s easier to tap into your energy.

Your heart rate rises a little, and you can feel the thick sludge of healing blood in your chest slide down your arm to the very tips of your fingers. It’s hard to tell due to being wet still, but you know that your body is sweating profusely from the strain. But it’s worth it, the sludge bubbles just a bit out of the cuts and lacerations covering your hand, and pull back in, leaving not even scars. When you flex your hand again, all of the tendons are connected. Weak, but connected.

“Then how did you do all of that?”

“Don’t answer that. We don’t want to know. You live a life outside of the Dragon Code. It’s clearly a life too vicious and bloody for us,” Francis says as he turns the sail to slow the ship. “Now get off. I never want to see you again. We are good men, we don’t attract the ire of demons. Go on your way and go home you monster,” he says as the ship creeps next to the shore of the river delta.

>>
“Take me to a proper dock, and you’ll never have to see me again,” you say as you see Louis grab the docking hook. Curious, you watch as he uses it as a lever to push the roc off to the back of the ship, where the railing broke off.

“Take you to a dock? And let people see that we helped a monster such as you?” Francis asks. You glare at him as Louis pushes the corpse off the side and into the water.

“Take me to a dock, do not make me get back in the water.”

Francis’s face contorts in rage, but he bottles it. “Fine.” He spits on the deck and turns the sails again, to take the ship up the river. A small village on the shore of the river is the first settlement you find, though you can see the proper city just a small ways beyond. They furl the sails quickly and let the ship come to a rest in the slow current of the river next to a dock. “Now get off,” the captain. orders.

You sigh and step off the ship and onto the deck. The wooden boards are weak and spaced too far apart, letting you see the water below. You waste little time in getting back to solid ground. When your feet hit dirt, you turn back to Francis and Louis who are already pushing the ship off. “Just what is the Dragon Code, anyways?”

“Go to a bloody temple,” they shout back.

“Sir, can I help you?” a woman in a plain cotton dress asks as she walks up to you. She has a stack of papers in her hand along with a quill. Coins are clanking together in her pocket, and she’s looking at you expectantly, until she sees the condition you’re in. “Oh, sir. Are you alright? Were those pirates or ruffians or something? Let me call the guard.

“Actually, that won’t be necessary. You might be able to help me though. I’m looking for the Dragon,” you tell her as you try to clean the blood from your hands and generally make yourself a bit more presentable despite looking like a crazed old man covered in blood.

She smiles. “Aren’t we all? We could certainly use his guidance as he once gave us. He hasn’t spoken to any of us since Lady Lyrra. If you do wish to find the Dragon, I certainly wish you the best of luck. But you won’t find him in this rundown little village. You’re a pilgrim then?”

You take a deep breath and focus on your inner energy. A good portion of it came directly from the Dragon, many years ago. You wrested it from his control and took it into yourself so that you would have the power to protect those precious to you, to protect Lauren. Something tells you that you’re a very long way from her. But you know that you’re close to the Dragon. The great serpent is lying in rest somewhere nearby, just waiting for a wakeup call. “I suppose I am a pilgrim.”

“I guess you’d like to stay at the temple then. We’re no strangers to pilgrims seeking the great tree of Lyr. If you’re lucky, you may even meet Lyanna. I’m supposed to be the dock tax collector, but if there’s no ship, then there’s no tax. I can show you there. Do you need help walking? A cane perhaps?” the woman explains as you look at the village around you.

There’s no technology anywhere. Houses are made from wood and thatch. Carriages are being drawn by six legged lizards. Children are in the roads playing with sticks. Every house has trickles of smoke coming from them. There are no cars, no phones, no antennae, no defenses, no pavement, nothing of the modern era whatsoever. They’re living in the dark ages.

“Are you alright sir?” she asks, putting her hand on your shoulder.

“I’m fine. Just a bit overwhelmed.”
>>
“By our little village? I’m flattered. Come on, let’s get you to the temple so you can rest. You must be very tired from your trip. A warm meal will do you good.”

If a quest can't get out of white on it's first thread, most people considering picking up the quest will drop it at seeing that, so you should upvote it to at least green, preferably purple. Considering there were seven of us, we can hit 5

By the way, as per usual with me, I try to stay abreast of questions. If you have one, fire away. This applies to post quest, mid quest, or even in qtg although that's a pretty horrible idea.

MC is on tense terms with the Dragon, but thedragon is on good terms with humanity as a whole. He wasn't supposed to be able to survive the process.

Just stumbled across this and I gotta say. I can't wait for more. So far I'm loving the world and I quite enjoy your writing. definitely upvoted. Also holy shit you've got ~20+ upvotes
>>
>>30931048
When you bind a demon, you clash egos with them to see which soul will remain in charge. That's why you could only bind so many, can't risk a demon getting control of your body when you're strong enough to slaughter armies singlehandedly. Since you couldn't take another demon, you went to the dragon. he thought you were basically killing yourself.

At best he would get a puppet. At worst a snack.

Phones are suffering
>>
>>30931663
why is the dragon pro humanity anyway?
And how long or will take till we get our full power back? I hope it is not planned to be a gradual thing throughout the quest and we'll get them back soon.

And yes, phones is suffering
>>
>>30931982
It will be gradual but its still pretty overkill. In the near future there will only be like ten things you can't automatically win against. Most of which are the BBEG and your demons
>>
>>30932107
>>30931663

Dragon is pro humanity for plot relevant reasons which will be revealed later. For now, because Earth belongs to humans, not the dead.
