You slip your way out of bed, careful not to wake Robin up. Silently, you get dressed and follow the scent of coffee to the kitchen where you find Jeanine nursing a cup. In a groggy haze, you pour your own cup and take a seat next to her.

There's a notable absence in the house. "Where's Vance and his parents?"

"They left a note. They went to go do a bunch of paperwork stuff. Vance went with them with them. They should be back soon." Jeanine looks how you feel; tired and a little disappointed. "Didn't get much sleep?" She blows on her cup.

"Nope." You give it a taste. Too bitter, even for you. You stir in a little sugar. "Not for the reasons you think either. I was putting on something sexy for Robin to take off, but when I finished changing, she fell asleep." You sigh. You know yesterday was a long day, but it's still a blow to the ego. "I couldn't sleep though. My engines were all revving to go and I had to spend the night spooning her, smelling her hair, wrapping my arms around her..." You test your coffee again. Trying to tease Robin last night backfired hard and you're feeling frustrated. "I guess it's karma or something for all the times I teased her."

Jeanine gives a short laugh. It's not a mean or cruel laugh, but one that has a hint of self-awareness to it.

Jeanine sips her coffee. "I came into his room, told him you and Robin were going at it, which at the time I assumed was true." She gives you a sympathetic look. "Vance invites me into his bed, then he takes the floor." You cringe. "I don't give up that easily though. I got him back on the bed and started a tickle fight. The kind where I wrap my legs around him to pin him down."

You lean in closer to listen. "Now we're getting somewhere." Machop comes up to the table to sit with the two of you. Vance must have left him here. He's playing at being a person.

Jeanine stares off into space. "I think Vance still sees me as the little girl he used to play with." You look up a the tall, statuesque, busty yet impossibly perky, blonde goddess of female beauty. It's hard to imagine anyone thinking of her as a little girl. "Maybe I should just leave it at that." She puts on a smile and clinks her cup to yours. "To neither of us getting laid last night!" She finishes her cup.

Jeanine stares into her empty cup. "Normally guys just throw themselves at me. I wouldn't know how." You suppress the urge to make a sarcastically sympathetic remark. You don't know how far you can tease her yet as a friend. You decide to be positive instead. "Uh-uh. No way. We're not surrendering! C'mon, girl, we're going shopping!" Jeanine perks up. "First though, I need to make a call. Is there a phone I can use?" You think about the three Pokemon you rescued from Team Imperium.

Jeanine gestures to the videophone on the wall.

You're just about to dial Professor Fir when you have the urge to ask her something. "Would you ever want another Pokemon?"

Jeanine snaps out of her funk and looks at you. "I don't know..." She's normally not someone who stutters or hesitates with her words, but you can see her struggle a little here. "Maybe. I don't think I'd want to be a trainer collecting badges or anything, but yes. One day, if the circumstances are right."

You punch in Professor Fir's number.

"Well hello there." He greats you with a smile. He's always in a good mood. "You're Pokemon are doing well. I have to say that Raistlin is quite the specimen. Trunks has been very eager to help out in the lab too. I couldn't ask for a better assistant."

You explain what happened, skimming over the incriminating parts.

"I see. I'm glad that they've been recovered. Please send them over. I'd like to examine them personally right away."

"Well, that really depends on what the examination turns up. They've been gone quite awhile. Assuming there's nothing physically wrong, they'll go to new trainers. I worry that they may not be well adjusted though. They may end up needing more mature trainers to help them."

You look over to Jeanine. She's already had a Pokemon before, and she's definitely more mature than someone like Junior. "I'll send them over right now. When you're done with them, can my friend, Jeanine, have one?" You keep your voice down. You don't want to make a big thing about it quite yet.

"I can't promise anything. Like I said, it depends on the examinations. If you can vouch for her though, and nothing unexpected turns up, then yes, that sounds ideal." He smiles at you. "I'm glad you were the first young trainer I got to send off on their journey. I can tell you care about Pokemon very much. Next time you're in Novum, I want to thank you personally for finding them."

Praise from adults is still a foreign concept from you, even if Fir isn't really that much older. "T-thanks." You send the Pokemon over and end the call. Vance's parents must do well to have this equipment. Then again, it might just be something people have, and the orphanage didn't.

Robin comes into the kitchen, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes.

You give her a quick peck on the lips. "Good timing! We're going to go shopping for Jeanine."

Robin slowly starts to wake. "OK, where are we going? Oh! Can we do a makeover!"

Jeanine looks at Robin. "Makeover? What's wrong with how I look now?" She's not defensive, but legitimately concerned.

You look at her, a little envious. "Nothing, we just need to show you off so even Vance sees it."

After scribbling down a quick note for Vance, you take off.

You never really had a doll when you were growing up. You're a little ashamed of how giddy you are to play dress-up with Jeanine. Especially with Robin helping you out.

"First you need some clothes that are better for traveling. Something tough and practical." She looks skeptical, but she comes along to the store you drag her to.

You find just the place. Braundalin has pretty much everything, it seems.

"Nope, you don't want this one. This material can chafe if it gets hot." You and Robin help her pick something else out. You find an outfit that you assumed would look frumpy, but it fits her form almost cartoonishly well. "That works." Robin nods enthusiastically in agreement.

Next stop is a place that sells dresses. There are a lot to choose from here. You and Robin dress her up and strip her down repeatedly with a thousand different dresses. Finally, you find a simple black number that even makes Robin drool a little. You'd be jealous if you weren't busy ogling her yourself. "Perfect. Vance might be dense, but he's not blind."

Finally, there's one more stop you want to make. It's a hip store that sells lingerie, summer wear, hip new clothes, and unmentionables.

Jeanine once again looks skeptical. "What are we doing here?

You just grin wickedly as you take her inside. You start doing the dress up routine again, except this time Robin vanishes for a bit. When she comes back, you've already helped Jeanine find a piece of lingerie that makes yours look downright conservative.

Jeanine looks at herself in the mirror. "Are you sure about this?"

Robin nods again, even more enthusiastically than before. You put your hand around Jeanine's shoulder. "If he doesn't get the hint after seeing you in this, we'll check him for a pulse."

Jeanine smiles and poses in the mirror. "This is actually really comfortable."

You're glad that's settled. You head back to Vance's house to get the big lug. You make sure to hide Jeanine's dress and lingerie bags on your way in. That's a surprise for later.

Vance greats you warmly. "There you are! What's the plan for today?"

You head to the Pokemon center first. You want to make sure you're selecting the right team. Plus it's a good idea to make sure everyone is in top shape before the gym

Jeanine is doing a fairly good job of acting normal, but she keeps looking over at Vance. Robin just stares between the both of them.

Vance finally says something "Are those new clothes? They look good."

"Oh, these things? Just something we picked up." Jeanine is somebody you'll have to watch. She's nowhere as wide open as Vance and Robin.

"Cool. Get anything else?"

Robin interrupts. "H-hey! We're here! Here at the Pokemon center. Let's go inside!" Smooth.

"Does anyone know anything useful about the gym here?" The question isn't directed to anyone in particular.

Robin is the first to answer. "There are two leaders. Braundalin used to have two feuding gyms but instead of fighting until one of them gave up, they decided to merge instead. They usually take challengers in a double battle, using four Pokemon in total. There's Dalim and Sid. Dalim is Vance-shaped, but he's the Dark type leader. Sid is...creepy. Like a talking snake. He's the fighting type leader." They must have influenced each other a lot. "They change up their Pokemon a lot, but they almost always use their Bisharp and Hitmonlee." She takes a breath. "Hitmonlee is strange though. If it's not taken out right away, it paralyzes Pokemon. It's not like normal paralyzing either, it's like it just presses buttons on them that shuts them down."

Vance is listening intently. "Pressure points."

Honestly, we don't really have any pokemon who are going take this gym easily, this will probably be the first challenging gym we've faced. The only super effective we've got is Raistlin on Fighting types, but on the flip-side Darks are generally completely immune to psychic.

You're still feeling very conflicted about who to bring. It's a tough choice. You want more information first.

"Vance, what do you know about pressure points?"

He takes a seat at one of the tables and gestures for everyone else to do the same. "You probably saw that participation ribbon I had for a martial arts tournament, next to all of my sisters awards." Jeanine nods. "There was this guy there, skinny, lanky even. He took his glasses off before the fight and had to take a few minutes to adjust his eyes. I'm not proud, but I got really cocky. I barely went through the motions for stretching. When the match started, I just walked right up to him. I felt bad for the guy! I didn't want to just knock him senseless, but I had to do something so I reached out to grab him and put him in a hold."

Vance sighs.

"That's when it happened. He hit my arm, two, maybe three times. It was fast. I tried to grab him again, but my arm just wouldn't respond. He kept hitting me with this little finger pokes and before I knew it, I couldn't move. I lost in the first round. It was...humbling. After that, I decided I needed to expand what I knew about fighting. I just happened to be watching a documentary on TV about Pokemon training, and I decided to pave my own way with a style based on Pokemon." He looks at you seriously. "If that Hitmonlee can do that too, take it out fast or from a safe distance."

Robin breaks the gaze. "I do but...I don't want to make us lose." She means she doesn't want to make you lose. It's either that, or she thinks you'll cause her to lose and she just doesn't want to say anything.

You try to read her face. You don't see any guilt. You figure she's telling the truth. "It'll be fine," you assure her. She lightens up when you put your hand on her back.

She looks up at you. "Don't be mad at me, OK?" She really needs to work on her confidence. If she didn't say yes, you were considering asking Vance.

You're still conflicted about who take. You're leaning towards keeping Levi, but you figure Nibbles* probably won't be a good fit for this gym. Maybe you can just decide who not to take for now, and figure it out when you see what you're up against with your own eyes.

Robin looks like her mind is racing. You can tell she's in a bad position for this gym. "I think I'll use Dratini at first unless there's a big surprise."

The gym looks like the classical image of a large dojo from the outside. You enter and take a look around before finding the leaders. There's a small audience wing on the side. If she didn't need you to be a rock here, you'd probably be doing what she's doing. "Your problem is that your biggest enemy and opponent is in your head. You haven't even lost a match since I've been with you."

She's a little better, but you can see her small chest rise and fall faster than it should. "That just means I'm due."

You just act normal. "If you're leading with Dratini, try to use Thunderwave on Hitmonlee as soon as you can."

She seems more focused now. "R-right! I was thinking the same thing."

Good. You're on the same wavelength. "I don't know yet, but I might end up using Leviathan." She looks nervous again. "I know that's scary, but think of how scared their Pokemon will be."

She smiles. It seems half-geniune too. She gives the signal to the referee that you're ready.

"This match will be a double battle. Each trainer is allowed two Pokemon each. Only the challengers may switch Pokemon."

Dalim sends out Bisharp, and Sid sends out Hitmonlee. You hope their second Pokemon aren't as intimidating.

Robin is reaching for Dratini's ball. Maybe after this you'll train with her to get a better understanding of her Pokemon.

"Vlad! Use Confuse Ray on Hitmonlee!" Vlad moves faster than anyone can react. He flies low to the ground to get into range and lets off a Confuse Ray at Hitmonlee. He keeps a good distance.

Sid is just a little slower. "Hitlomee! Bring it down with Megakick! Do not let it escape."

Something about having Vlad on the field makes you feel faster. "Vlad! Grass!" It's all you have to say. Vlad already has a habit of flying low to be evasive. He dives through the grass, chased by a confused Hitmonlee.

Just as Hitmonlee emerges from the grass, Dratini nails it with a Thunderwave. It doesn't have any effect though.

Robin looks dismayed. "I'm supposed to know this! It has Limber!"

Dalim is calm and collected "Swords Dance, Bisharp." Bisharp completed a quick dance, and you see phantom swords surrounded it for just a brief second. Dalim looks to Sid. "Calm down. I'm coming."

"Vlad! Confuse Ray on Bisharp this time!" Vlad wastes no time. He bursts out of the grass an incredible speed and nails Bisharp with a Confuse Ray.

Sid commands Hitmonlee to target Vlad with another Mega Kick. Hitmonlee flies from the bushes to deliver it, but in it's confusion it missed and collides with Bisharp instead. There's a solid TONG as the kick connects. It's a Normal type move, but it still hits hard against Bisharp.

Dalim is less calm now. "Sid! Think!" He focuses back on the arena. "Bisharp, Iron Head on that Golbat, dead ahead! Do not strike to your left!"

Bisharp rushes after Vlad! Bisharp is confused and Vlad is just too fast. Bisharp misses and hits it's head on the ground.

Robin shakes her head. "R-right! Dratini, Twister!"

Dratini let's loose a small tornado. It sweeps around the arena in an arc and hits both Hitmonlee and Bisharp.

Bisharp hits the ground hard. It's clearly out of the fight. Dalim glares at Sid. "So much for that plan. Bisharp, return!"

You look to Robin. It's all about trusting your friends.

He sends out a new Pokemon. "Honchcrow! We can't go easy on them!"

There's nothing you can really do against it, it's just so fucking boring. I really hope gobble does something to make it less effective. Maybe give pokemon trainers who spam it a bad reputation which makes nobody want to battle them

Vlad hits Honchkrow first, but Honchkrow is able to complete the move as well, and both Pokemon end up confused. They both fail to avoid each other in flight and collide in the air.

You thought you heard it before, but you definitely notice the laughter from the spectators now.

"Mockery!" Sid shouts. "Hitmonlee! While its down. Ssssstop that Golbat! Mega Kick! Hit the right one this time!" Hitmonlee shakes off it's confusion and lands a devastating blow to Vlad as he's getting up.

Vlad isn't knocked out yet, but he doesn't seem able to fly. You don't think it's the confusion either. He flaps one wing, but the other does nothing.

"Dratini! Slam on Hunchkrow." Robin points to her target.

Dratini connects the slam just as Honchkrow is struggling to get back in the air. The power of the Slam nails it just as it's taking off.

Dalim shakes his head. "What a mess."

All four Pokemon are in close quarters now just outside a patch of tall grass. Vlad is confused and badly hurt. Hitmonlee has taken some damage, Dratini is fine, and Honchkrow has taken some damage and is confused.

"Don't fall for Confussssse Ray again Hitmonlee." Sid yells.

If he just starts throwing special sweepers or defensive pokemon that work with stuff like leech seed or status moves like us at us, confusion will be less effective. Gyms like this are what the confusion strategy counters basically perfectly. Having a sweeper that builds up with swords dance or a glass cannon like hitmonlee leaves the opponent super open to killing themselves with their own build up strength.
