You are Captain WILLIAM PIERCE, a combat rescue officer of the United States Air Force.

After a short but emotional farewell to your family, you were on your way west to where Janice lived. Of course, you just told your family that you were visiting a fellow war buddy. You really did not want to see how they would react if they found out you were spending the rest of your leave with Janice. At least not yet.

The farewell is still rather fresh in your mind. Mom was bawling about her "little baby" leaving the house again, while Dad gave you a crisp salute like he always did. Bree gave you her signature bearhug and warned you to play nice. Charlie also finally managed to finish the Wakizashi and Seax just in time. You decided to take the Wakizashi with you, but left the Seax back home. While they would make exceptions for Red, the AF would never let you carry a weapon like that around. Besides, if you REALLY needed it that bad, you could always arrange to have it mailed to base.

And so begins your long ride back to Los Angeles. Since it was still pretty early morning, you quickly doze off in you seat, only to wake up later to the blazing noontime sun. Blinking, you see that the bus has pulled over to a gas station to fill up. You decide to get out and stretch your legs when you see a payphone. Again, you've got enough change for one call.

You remember the phone number Red gave you shortly before you all went your separate ways, and you quickly dial it in. You hear the phone ring a few times before you hear the click of somebody picking up the phone.

"Hey, who is this?" You hear a familiar voice.

"Jeez Red, you can stand to be a bit more polite when talking over the phone." You smirk.

"Cap! Holy shit, I didn't think you'd call! How are things going at home?"

"Pretty good. It was a nice change of pace seeing my parents again. You?"

"Ah, well, it's the same old thing here. Mom's still somewhere in Europe doing whatever it is she does. I'm actually visiting my dad, since he's working at a lab down in Silicon Valley here."

"Really? What's he doing?"

"Top secret DARPA stuff, like always." You can visualize Red rolling her eyes. "Nothing I can really talk about over the phone, but he's got all sorts of crazy ideas. Then again, I guess that's what they pay him for."

"Must be tough having to brilliant parents."

"Nah, Mom's okay, but Dad's totally nuts. I'm actually sorta glad I'm not even half as brilliant as him .Seems like a one way ticket to crazyville." She laughs.

You wonder whether you should tell her about the wakizashi you got for her as a apology gift.

You hold up just short of telling her about the wakizashi. It would probably do much better as a surprise. Plus, it seems she's forgotten about the whole "shooting her in the foot" thing, and you don't really have a mind to bring it up again.

"Well, I dunno, seeing how you fight, you probably did pick up a bit of crazy from him." You chuckle.

"Yeah, maybe." Red giggles.

"Anyways, how's your uncle doing? Heard anything from him?"

"Ah yeah, I managed to get a call out to him. Seems like he's bored out of his mind now that the Russians got kicked out of Alaska. He's trying to arrange a transfer to one of the more active theaters. Who knows, we might end up being under his command again!"

"Heh, that would be nice." You grin. You then hear the bus horn honking, a signal that the tank was filled and the driver was ready to go.

"Well, I actually gotta be going now." You say. "You take it easy and enjoy the rest of your leave, okay? I'll see you in a few days."

"Yeah, sure thing, Cap!" Red says happily. "See you soon!"

You hang up the phone and dash back to the bus, making it just in time before the doors shut. The driver is about to give you a venomous look when he sees your Air Force shirt and he just shakes his head and returns his attention to the road.

It takes another few hours, but you finally arrive at Los Angeles. Stepping off the bus, you're almost overwhelmed. Having spent the last few months on various remote bases, you've never actually set foot in a populated city for quite some time, so getting off in the middle of LA was quite dizzying. Looking around, you can see hundreds of other bus riders embarking or disembarking, and the entire station is a flurry of activity. You frown. Janice said she would be waiting here to pick you up, but you don't see her. Then again, it's hard to see anything in this crowd.

You just decide to stay put and wait. You've heard a lot of horror stories of people who thought wandering around LA was a good idea. Nope, you were going to stay here like the good military man that you were.

"Fine weather today, isn't it?" You hear someone say next to you.

You blink and turn to see Janice sitting right next to you as if she had been there the entire time. You're not sure if you just didn't notice her, or if she slipped in while you weren't looking.

"I see you're still wearing your Air Force clothes." Janice says with her signature smile.

"And I see that you're uh, not." You say rather lamely .

Indeed, Janice was wearing casual civilian wear rather than the Air Force jacket you typically say her wearing. Then again, you figure most witches wouldn't walk around in their underwear off base if they could help it. In this instance, Janice was wearing a light jacket with a pleated skirt and knee high boots.

Ah yes, at the end of the day, Janice was still a woman.

Well, it was a bit surprising, but it's not like it put you off or intimidated you or anything. Now that you think about it, Janice's behavior made a lot more sense this way.

"Oh, I'm not bothered at all, Princess." You grin and bow in front of her.

"S-stop that!" Janice blushes crimson red. It was a very rare moment to see her so flustered.

"Why, are you embarrassed?" You chuckle.

"YES." Janice grabs your arm and starts tugging you toward the exit. "I try not to make a big deal of it, so can you please do the same?"

"No problem, I was just teasing you." You laugh.

"I know, I know." Janice sighs. "I'm sorry if I'm acting strange, it's just that I haven't done anything like this before..."

"Meeting a guy by yourself?"

"Having company over."

"Ah."

When you exit out onto the loading area, you were half expecting to see a massive white limousine or something. However, Janice's ride wasn't THAT blatant. No, it was just a simple black sedan. A very well dressed man then appears in front of the both of you.

"Miss Foster." He nods respectfully.

"Hello, Harris. This is Captain William Pierce. Captain, this is our driver Harris."

"Pleasure." You say.

Harris gives you a respectful nod as well. "Can I take your bag, sir?"

"Oh, yeah, sure." You hand your duffel bag to Harris, who promptly stuffs it into the trunk before opening the passenger door.

Man, this was going to take some getting used to.

You and Janice both slide into the backseat, and Harris returns to the driver seat. He turns on the engine and adjusts the mirror slightly.

"Now, I was instructed to bring you directly home, but do you have any plans to go anywhere else?"

"Well, not particularly..." Janice shakes her head and then turns to you. "How about you, Captain?"

You take on look out the window, and see that the sun is already starting to set. It was a really long bus trip.

"Nah, let's just go back to your house." You say.

"All right. You heard him, Harris." Janice says.

"Understood." The driver nods.

"Well, Captain-"

"You can just call me William, you know." You grin. "We're off duty, so rank doesn't mean anything right now."

"R-right. Just a habit of mine." Janice nods. "Erm, William, er, Will..."

"All right, Will." Janice nods. "How has your leave been so far?"

"Oh, it's been fine." You say. "Got to meet my folks again, and catch up on a few things. Even got Bree to come back home and work out her differences with them."

"That's wonderful!" Janice smiles. "It won't do to have a fractured family like that!"

"Yeah, well, things seem to be going fine back home." You grin. "Well, except for the fact that my dad now has his own personal F-4 Phantom. I have no damn clue how he's going to keep that thing running at his age."

"Well, everybody needs a hobby, right?"

"I suppose." You shrug. "What about you? How's your week been?"

"Oh, extremely hectic!" Janice grins. "EVERYBODY came back home to see me! My mother father, and all of my brothers and sisters! It was a wonderful reunion!"

"You make it sound like it doesn't happen often."

"Well, not so much anymore." Janice sighs. "My father's a high level attorney, and my mother's an Academy instructor. They're both EXTREMELY busy. All my brothers and sisters... they're all pretty much at the age where they're in college or graduate school. They actually sacrificed a lot to be able to come here for a week."

"So, from the sounds of it, your family is all ivy-league?" You ask.

"I guess you could put it that way." Janice nods.

"Ah, well..." Janice frowns. "Aside from my mother, I'm the only member of the family who can use magic. It's only natural for a witch to join the military, right?"

Well, it was the common practice, but it wasn't exactly required. You knew about plenty of witches who went on to focus on civilian profession rather than join the military, which is why you get he feeling Janice wasn't actually being entirely truthful here.

You decide to let the issue slide, for now. There would be a better time to bring it up later.

"So," You say, keeping the conversation going, "So what did you parents think about your career choice? I can't imagine they'd be all that happy."

"Well, my mother was more understanding, since she's a witch like me and is an Academy instructor. My father... well... he was absolutely livid at the time!" She chuckles. "Even now, he thinks that I'm just 'going through a phase.'"

You then remember her confiding in you about her decision, or rather, indecision on the issue of going on the road of matronhood or not. Again, you decide not to bring it up for now.

"Well, I hope he doesn't hold it against you."

"Don't worry, he's polite enough." Janice says. "He still loves me, but he just doesn't fully agree with my life choices."

"I think you just described every parent ever." You laugh.

"Probably!" Janice laughs as well.

"We're here." Harris announces.

You look out the window to see a massive mansion. Well, it's not like those massive, billionaire estates, but it was definitely big, dwarfing your own modest family home. The front lawn alone looked to be the size of half a football field, while the backyard was probably a full size one.

"Wow." You blink.

"Please, it's nothing." Janice laughs lightly.

Harris then parks the car at the front door and unloads your bag. Janice beats Harris to the door and opens it herself, a bit to his chagrin. Janice just gives him an apologetic smile and motions for you to follow her inside. The interior of her house was equally as large, making you feel tiny, like a gnome. Everywhere, surfaces were made of real stone and wood. Really, REALLY expensive.

But... you also feel that it's eerily empty.

"Hey Janice, where exactly is everybody?" You ask, looking around the darkened corridors. "It looks really... empty."

"Ah, yes." Janice sighs. "It's a very big and very nice house, but unfortunately, there's hardly anybody in it most of the time. My mother and father are usually busy with their respective jobs, and all of my siblings are at college, so... there's hardly anybody at home."

"Didn't you just say there was a reunion?" You blink.

"Yes, there was. Last week. Everybody's already left, with the exception of my parents." Janice sighs.

"My apologies, Miss Foster." Harris interrupts. "But your mother and father say that they will be late again."

"I shouldn't even be surprised." Janice sighs even deeper. "Well, I wouldn't want you starving or anything. Let's make dinner, shall we?"

You decide to join Janice in the kitchen, where she's already laying out two slabs of sea bass.

"Say, do you need any help?" You ask.

"Will, we all know what happens when we combine you with cooking." Janice snickers.

"Hey, HEY. It was not my fault the stove decided to spontaneously combust." You say defensively. "It was a piece of junk, anyways."

"I'm sure it was." Janice nods playfully. "How about you grab some vegetables from the fridge? I'm planning to steam them."

"Sure thing." You nod and you move over to where she points. The refrigerator was freaking MASSIVE, but you don't say it out loud. It takes you a bit to find what you're looking for. You grab a bag full of assorted vegetables and make your way back to Janice, who's humming to herself as she cuts the slabs of fish into filets, swaying her hips as she does so.

Well, you're in no particular hurry to deliver those vegetables, so you decide to hang back a bit and enjoy the show. Plus, you want to see how long until Janice notices. Her hips bounce and sway a bit more before she pauses and without turning, speaks up.

"You know Will, finding some vegetables shouldn't really be that hard." She says with a bit of a playful tone.

"Yeah, well, it's a big kitchen. Lots of distractions." You respond.

"I'm sure." Janice giggles a bit.

"Anyways, Janice, do you mind if I ask something a bit personal?"

"Sure." Janice nods. "Not like there's anybody else around to interrupt us."

You sigh and take a deep breath.

"Why did you REALLY join the Air Force, Janice?"

Janice pauses and the air seems to go still for a very, very long time before she speaks again.

"Well, I suppose there's no point in hiding it from you." Janice sighs deeply. "In short... I guess you could say I was coward."

"Huh?" You blink.

Janice takes the fish, puts it on a pan, and slides it into the oven before turning to you, a bit of a somber look on her face.

"Being the eldest child... your parents always have a lot of expectations put on you. You have to be the best at everything, you have to go to a certain school, you have to live your life in a certain way..."

You wince. Janice's story seemed to sound very similar to Bree's, what with her disagreement with her parents over her path in life.

"I couldn't take it. Instead of going to school, I opted to join the Air Force. IF I was going to stray off the beaten track, might as well take a path that would help people, right? So I guess you could say I joined the Air Force due to a bout of weakness...:

As always, Janice's cooking was nothing short of godly. And the fact that she had a fully stocked kitchen with quality ingredients? Oh man, it knocked whatever she made on base OUT OF THE FUCKING PARK. Most of dinner is spent on random small talk, mostly about your respective families' odd habits and quirks. However, after quite some time, Janice glances at the clock. "Hm, if they're not back by now, well.... they probably won't be back till morning."

"Oh, you!" Janice giggles shoves you lightly. "I never took you to be such a flirt!"

"Takes one to know one."

"Are you insinuating that I'm no better than you at this?" Janice smiles.

"Who knows?" You grin and shrug. "Now, about those movies...."

"There's a Blockbuster not too far. I go there all the time."

"Whoa, wait, you mean our little princess here still goes to Blockbuster?"

"It's close and convenient." Janice pouts. "Come on, it's close enough that we don't have to bother Harris about it."

With that, Janice guides you out of the house. She takes out some keys and uses them to unlock the car waiting out front. You both then pile in and Janice drives down the round Hardly half a miles comes by when you see everybody's favorite movie rental store.

"So, what are you in the mood for?" You ask. "Drama? Action? Romance?"

"Hmmm... Janice playfully puts a finger to her chin. "I was thinking classic war movies tonight."

Truly, this was a woman after your heart.

"Ooooh, how about this one." You say, picking out one of the tapes.

"A Bridge Too Far..." Janice looks at the cover. "Oh, I think I heard about this battle..."

"It certainly has am impressive cast list." You say, looking at the back.

"Oh my, they even had actual witches as part of the cast!" Janice adds in.

And just like that you're back in Janice's house, sitting snugly in a couch next to Janice as the VCR boots up.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKDPX8PEiVk

The premise of the film is simple enough. It's based on Operation Market Garden, which was the Allies' attempt to liberate Holland from Martian occupation. The overall plan was to have British and American paratroopers capture a series of bridges scattered throughout Holland, which would British tanks and German panzers to roll through Holland and destroy Martian strongpoints.

You have to admit, though, for such an old movie, the entire thing was very impressive. From individual battle scenes to the paradrop itself, you wonder just how they pulled it off. You honestly can't believe they just rounded up hundreds and hundreds of extras and then tossed them out of a plane just to make a shot.

Near the end, the movie starts getting more exciting, as the fighting centers around the titular bridge. While the 82nd's daring river assault was impressive, you had to admit the movie portrayed the British as utter badasses. Trapped in Nijmegen and surrounded on all sides by Martians, the British were in huge trouble. The Martians had manged to detonate the bridge, meaning that British and German armor couldn't be sent in to assist. What was worse, they had no supply lines, either.

What would have been an utter disaster, however, is saved by the timely arrival of a witch air wing. In addition to providing close air support, the witches also took it upon themselves to ferry supplies and ammunition across the river so the British could keep fighting. Hell, the British and German tanks even start lining up on the opposite side of the river to act as impromptu artillery. Eventually, the day is won for the humans, though at a terrible cost.

Really, your only complaint about the movie was that the Martians just looked so corny and fake. Then again, short of getting real Martians on set, you figure it would be really, REALLY tough to replicate them.

"Hmmmm, that was a good movie." Janice says as the credits finally roll.

"Yeah, I don't know why I've never watched it up until now."

"So..." Janice says, sidling up next to you. "Maybe we should move on to the main event?"

"Let's." You nod.

You both lean forward and your lips lock together. Time seems to freeze as your mind blanks, but you wouldn't have it any other way.

If there was one moment you would want to last forever, it would be taking Janice Foster's first kiss.

Holly awoke in her bed with a sudden start. The room itself was quiet, though she could hear the faint roar of a steelwing's engines through the soundproofing of the walls. She glanced at the clock next to her; she was up almost two hours before the alarm was set to go off.

'Well, I could get some paperwork done early,' she thought glumly, hesitantly starting to force herself out from under the blankets. As the cold night air brushed against her skin, Holly could hear Will and Chris telling her that it would be okay to indulge a little bit of laziness just this once. She relented to what she imagined her friends would say to her and wrapped her blankets tightly around herself. No, she was definitely not ready to abandon the warmth and comfort of her bed just yet.

On the bed opposite to hers, Chris snored loudly, her blankets kicked away over the course of the night. Holly sighed to herself after stealing a glance at her friend's figure. Chris would have said that Holly had nothing to be jealous over, but she had trouble believing that. She was also jealous of her ability to apparently sleep as long as she wanted to.

Wide awake, Holly had plenty of time to ponder what her relationship with the friendly Tech Sergeant was becoming.

'How does he do this to me?'

She didn't exactly mind the warm, fuzzy feeling she got just thinking about him. Still wrapped up in her blankets, Holly started rolling back and forth in her bed, giggling softly to herself as she remembered the most important bits of last night:
>>
>>30991300

Wait, its actually happening?
>>
>>30991335
1. Will had actually never seen Big Trouble in Little China before that night, and he ended up liking it almost as much as Holly did.
2. Holly was able to convince Will that not having seen The Last Dragon meant that he forfeited his next movie choice in favor of rectifying that mistake.
3. Will was a graceful loser after going zero games to Holly's ten straight wins at Blades of Steel.
4. The prize for thoroughly stomping him at "his" game was to be cake and ice cream of her choice.

Holly had gotten used to things over the last week, but she was definitely looking forward to going back to a more "normal" flight schedule. The results had been worth pursuing, but it was physically draining on her and the rest of the witches. Only the movie nights with Will (and beating him at NES games) kept her from voicing her own complaints to anyone.

Will probably had no clue that he'd somehow become someone Holly felt she could rely on for emotional support. He was there for her, like Chris was, like many other witches in the wing were... but it was different with him.

It struck her how glad she was that he wasn't a pilot or an infantryman on the front lines, and in that moment, she felt that she understood Kazanski's angst that much more. She didn't even want to imagine how she'd feel if Will or Chris suddenly vanished from her life.

Her thoughts were interrupted when Chris moaned something unintelligible from her bed just before rolling off of it onto the floor. After a moment of silence, she resumed snoring. It took almost everything in Holly's power to not laugh out loud.

Extricating herself from her blankets, Holly quietly made her way over to Chris. Holly shook her head as she knelt next to the unconscious blonde. Despite having arguably the greatest stamina among all the witches in the 3rd Wing, Chris was being exhausted enough by the current schedule that she could sleep through something like this.
>>
>>30991348
Holly could only fathom how drained her other witches must be feeling.

"Hey buddy," Holly whispered. "Need some help?" It was the least she could do for her friend.

Chris continued to sleep even as Holly picked her up off the floor and gently deposited her back on her bed. She didn't even stir after a gentle pat on the head, or when her blankets were pulled back over her.

"I'll see you later, 'kay?"

Chris only snored some more in reply.

-

The early start allowed Holly to enjoy the surprise of witches finding their Wing Commander in the showers before them. She even helped Raker make breakfast for the barracks, figuring that she owed the witch for all the cooking she had done for everyone. Holly also managed to not-so-subtly weasel a few recipes out of her so that she could cook for the "mystery man" she was seeing outside of the barracks every night for the past week.

After breakfast, Holly went straight to the office. There were plenty of patrol reports from the day before to read through and sign off on, in addition to other items that had been delivered over night. She had long ago decided that if she ever wrote a memoir of her time in the military, she'd have at least one chapter dedicated to the absurd amount of paperwork that supposedly kept the US military running—and drove her ever closer to insanity. She hoped Chris would wake up soon and just... be present to talk to. About anything, really.

Holly didn't last an hour doing paperwork all by her lonesome. With Chris likely still snoozing away, there was only one other place Holly preferred to be. She practically sprinted out of her office to get there.
>>
Oh wow first kiss huh...nice Merc.
>>
>>30991360
The hangar was a beehive of activity even this early in the morning and Will was at the center of it all, leading a crew through the usual pre-flight maintenance. Holly didn't approach him right away, watching him work from afar until she finally built up the nerve to try sneaking up on him. As she got closer, one of Will's assistants noticed her, but rather than rat her out he flashed her a thumbs up and pretended not to notice her.

Truly, this was the best ground crew.

Holly decided to get Will's attention with a firm poke to the back. He jumped slightly but managed to hide most of his surprise as he spun around to greet his attacker.

"Hey you," he grinned at her. The rest of the techs took this opportunity to slip away to a better vantage point for the unfolding drama. Will acted none the wiser; vengeance would be his later.

"Mornin' Will," she giggled.

"You're up earlier than you need to be. Feelin' good today?"

"You could say I'm feeling motivated." Holly's own grin only grew wider. "Who's the master, William Wilkins?"

"Holly MacLeod." Will's shoulders slumped. "I want that rematch."

She started to cackle in triumph, but muffled herself when she realized how loud she was being. She also didn't want to rub in her victory *too* much. There was no way he could have known that he had nothing to teach her when it came to Blades of Steel, no way to know that the best players on the base (as far as Holly was concerned) just happened to be stationed in her wing.

"You gotta admit, it was kinda funny..." she said sheepishly.

"Laugh it up, cow-girl, I'll take you down sooner or later."

"You have... potential." She favored him as she would a recruit from the academy. "You might be able to best me some day—but that day is very, very far away."
>>
>>30991374
"Keep talkin'," Will chuckled. "Lets see you sing that tune later tonight."

"You've already got me showing up at your place every night," Holly crossed her arms. "Don't go wishing for the impossible just yet."

"I thought," Will said carefully, "that first bit was the impossible part."

"Hah, right." She gave him another playful poke on the shoulder.

-

"I was gonna eat eventually," Will said in between bites of his government-issued scrambled egg mix.

"Uh huh," Holly smirked. "I've said that before."

Will had apparently missed out on breakfast, having awakened later than he'd intended. That had been his fault—he had insisted on rematch after rematch before finally giving up. Holly had insisted that he grab something to eat, and his subordinates—intending on cementing themselves as the Best Ground Crew Ever—had said they could handle things while Holly dragged him off.

"Well, I appreciate your insistence." Will leaned back in his cushioned seating. The officer's mess had a few amenities over what the average enlisted man was probably used to. "Am I supposed to even be here?"

"Witch privilege." She beamed at him; he could only shake his head at her. "Let's see someone tell me to escort you out of here."

"Like I said, I do appreciate this."

"Wow, flexing privilege for a man, are we?" a familiar voice spoke from behind Holly. "A new star burns over the frozen north, methinks."

"Grenadine!" Holly face burned crimson with surprise as she spun around in her chair to address her. "H-hi, I didn't hear you approach."

The taller red-head looked at the embarrassed Holly, then at the significantly calmer Wilkins, then back to Holly. After a long pause, Grenadine fell to her knees, laughing so hard that she was almost crying.

"I heard-" she was trying to talk, but failing between fits of laughter. "I-I heard you were-"

"Yes, I'm seeing a *boy*," Holly sighed, relaxing back in her seat. "It's not that funny."
>>
>Blades of Steel
Oh god my childhood.
>>
>>30991386
"-thought Chris was fooling me-" Grenadine was wiping tears from her eyes. "I mean, all things considered, I totally saw you belonging to her by the end of the month but-"

"Wh-what does that mean!?" Holly sputtered.

For his part, Wilkins remained respectfully silent, chewing thoughtfully on a piece of bacon. Eventually, Grenadine managed to calm herself down, standing up and making a big show out of dusting herself off; Holly rolled her eyes and turned back to face Will.

"You're not reeeally mad at me, are you MacLeod?" Grenadine asked, sitting next to her.

"Furious," Holly said flatly. "So what brings you here?"

"Besides grabbing some food for my girls?" Grenadine held up a bag filled with breakfast sandwiches. "Well, I saw you and Wilkins coming in, so I guessed you haven't heard about the briefing at 1100."

"That's... news to me." Holly straightened up in her seat. "Gonna be kinda tough for me to attend, I'll be on the last legs of a patrol around that time."

"Considering all Squadron and Wing Commanders are expected to attend, I imagine your mission is among the flights being put on hold, save for minimum BARCAP. You really haven't heard?" At that, Holly turned back to look at Grenadine with a pained expression; the taller red-head leaned back in her chair reflexively. "Don't shoot the messenger, I was already in my strikers when the recall order arrived via runner. I'm not exactly thrilled-"

"I was just *in* my office, no signed orders of the sort came through my mail box or anything!" Holly snapped. "This is really short notice, are you kidding me?"

"Well, considering the situation in the north, what do *you* think it means?" Grenadine took another sideways glance at Will before focusing back on Holly. "Handsome, quiet; he seems nice."

"I try to be," Will smirked.

"Snarky too. I see why she likes-"

"Hey!" Holly was almost shouting. "I'm asking you if-"
>>
>>30991399
"MacLeod, I poke fun at you a lot, I know," Grenadine gave Holly a light pat on the shoulder. "I wouldn't joke about something like this. I found this waiting for me when I went back to my office to figure out what the hell's going on." She pulled a copy of an official order from the breast pocket of her flight jacket, signed by no less than the commanding Major General of the entire 11th Air Force himself. Holly glowered at the paper, but after a moment her expression softened to one of worry. "They even recalled Colonel Wolcott about 20 minutes into his own CAP, so it's gotta be serious."

"Within the next 24 hours, you think?" Holly asked softly.

"Yeah." Grenadine stood from her chair abruptly. "I've gotta run. I'm a delivery girl at the moment and I've got business to take care of with Josie while we wait 'til 1100. You kids have fun!"

"Right, I'll see you there." Holly waved the witch away as she jogged off. With Grenadine out of sight, Holly leaned forward against the table, nursing her temples. Will slowly set his fork down, settled into his seat, and waited for Holly to say something. But after a long while it became apparent that she wasn't going to talk without being prompted first.

"I can, um, head back to the hangar without you, if you'd like-"

"Nonononononononono," she looked up at will, a small smile on her face. "I just started thinking about stuff."

"You look pretty stressed out."

"I'm feeling pretty stressed out," she stood up. "I'm getting pancakes, want some?"

"Sure, why not?"

"Just... stay there, I'll be right back!"

"I'm not goin' anywhere," he said reassuringly.
>>
>>30991412
She took a few steps backwards as though she was making certain he wouldn't try to sneak away before turning around and hurrying into line for the pancakes. The line itself moved swiftly, but that didn't stop gossip amongst fellow officers: particularly the other witches. It explained why the officer's mess had seemingly grown a lot busier than she'd expected at this hour, filled with pilots and witches wondering what they were being told to wait for.

'So she really wasn't just kidding around with me.' Like most, she had been expecting something like this over the course of the week. But this was on such a short notice that Holly couldn't help but feel bothered.

Most of all, what really got her was the distinct feeling that she wouldn't be able to watch another movie with Will tonight. And that thought upset her more than she believed it had any right to.

-

The wait for the briefing had been a form of pleasant agony. With no patrol to fly and Chris insisting that Holly spend some time out of the office while she dealt with the paperwork alone "for once", Holly had suddenly found herself with a lot more free time than moments before. Holly spent most of it with Will, completing the daily maintenance to her weapons and her strikers as though she were about to sortie anyway. Afterwards, they simply walked around the base and talked. They talked about the movies they wanted to see and places they wanted to visit if they got the chance. Holly wanted to go skiing; Will wanted to surf in Hawaii. In the hours that passed between breakfast and 1100, the war never came up once.
>>
>>30991419
She broke away from Will with twenty minutes to spare. By the time she arrived at the briefing room, Chris was already there reserving a seat for her. As Holly took her seat, she looked around the room to see who else were already present. She easily found Grenadine and Colonel Wolcott, their hands in motion in a recreation of a mock dogfight that he had lost. Grenadine looked like she was really enjoying herself.

There were a few squadron leaders, but full attendance was still something of a gradual process. Holly caught a glimpse of Kazanski walking in, her XO in tow. She saw Holly as she walked in, and hesitated for a moment. She looked as though she was about to say something... and then turned away to find a place in the corner as far as possible from MacLeod.

"Bitch..." Chris muttered.

"Chris, please!" Holly whispered angrily. She didn't want to start anything, not in a briefing room that would eventually be filled with USAF, Army, Navy, and Marine officers.

The wait dragged on as more people filled the room, but soon it became apparent that whomever was actually delivering the brief was running late. People began to get restless.

"Hoo boy..." Chris slouched on back in her seat. "Order us on standby, show up late to a brief-" She cut herself off when Holly gave her another look.

"I know," Holly said simply.

Fifteen minutes after the briefing was scheduled to begin, a somewhat haggard looking lieutenant came running into the room. Someone in the room snickered as the lieutenant nervously made his way to the podium. He mumbled something under his breath about "playing the runner" and then cleared his throat to address the gathered officers.

"As per Major General Ellison, this briefing has been delayed for three hours due to unforeseen circumstances. Movement is restricted to barracks and hangar spaces, all pilots and witches are to remain on standby until further orders come down the pipe. That is all."
>>
>>30991429
-

It was one thing to be on stand by: long waits before adrenaline-soaked minutes of combat was part of the job description. But Holly chaffed at the additional confinement being placed on her. There were probably good reasons for it, but that didn't make it something to be happy about. At the very least she could still visit the hangar to see Wilkins or tend to her equipment, but there was still so much to do before that was an option she could even start to consider. She ended going to the office with Chris, whittling away at paperwork and eating leftovers from the night before as lunch.

The worse part of all this was that she had more time to think—and there was so much to think about. She was worried about the readiness of her wing. It was no secret that her girls had been flying themselves to exhaustion every day for a full week. With something this major going down, she had hoped they would have more time to rest before going into action. She was worried about the girl who reported into medical this morning: Captain Gabrielle Nicola. Would she have to sit out the operation? If so, how would that affect her squadron?

She was worried about her own state, but she worried more about Chris. Memories of Tanana replayed themselves in her mind, Chris frantically calling for assistance, her heart starting to race as she remembered peeling the Flanker C away from her, remembered feeling the cannon rounds passing through her shield- No. She couldn't let that happen again. She wouldn't.

She worried about Wilkins, and what she felt for him. She worried that he didn't feel the same about it as she did.

She worried about not being able to see him again.

Holly returned to the briefing room alongside Chris with only minutes to spare, practically trembling with anticipation.

There was a notable difference in the room's atmosphere. It was quieter: nobody whispering to their neighbor, nobody doodling into their notepads. A certain Major General near the front podium had a definite chilling effect on the room that reminded Holly a lot of a certain Navy witch sitting to her left. To Kazanski's left was Bishop himself, looking surprisingly glum for a man who'd recently come back from the dead.

Holly noticed that every once in awhile, Kazanski would steal a quick glance over at Bishop, who seemed completely oblivious to it. Kazanski's expression seemed to shift constantly between relief, frustration, and something else. Like she wasn't sure how she ought to feel about the pilot sitting next to her.

She suddenly turned to face Holly, catching the Colonel observing her, her face turning bright red. Both women “hmph'd” and turned their attention away from each other towards the lectern.

"Real mature, girls..." Chris chuckled softly to herself.

Holly held back her reply as the general made his way lectern, a pair of maps appearing on the projection screens behind him.

"I think we've all waited long enough," the old man smirked at the gathered officers before launching into the briefing.

The plan was as simple as the movement of multiple Army divisions in concert with USAF and RCAF air support could be. The Russian land offensive had been successful up to a point; the cost of their success had been murderous on their men and material. By contrast, the US and Canada were bringing to bear more troops than the Soviets were willing to pull from the ever expanding battlegrounds of Europe. Their progress over the last week had been steady, but slow. The Army's plan was throw the Soviet advance in reverse by the end of tomorrow.
>>
>>30991450
The reason for the delay to the briefing had come from the Navy. Despite their best efforts, the battle group centered around the Kitty Hawk had been unable to pin down the exact staging location of the Soviet flying carrier. Worse still, anti-submarine patrols had confirmed one of their super subs somewhere in the Bearing Strait but had been unable track it down since initial contact. Adjustments to the plan had to be made.

The 3rd Witch Wing was going "up the middle" for a push straight into Tanana. They would provide additional cover for SEAD and strike packages going in to soften up Soviet positions, and also be present to help contest what was expected to be a very important piece of airspace.

Holly merely nodded in the affirmative as her orders came down, her pen flying across a notepad as she started working out assignments for the six squadrons in her wing. In between, she stole another glance at Kazanski: they'd have to work something out regarding what they'd do on this assignment. Holly still struggled to understand the best role for a a joint wing like Spellcaster, and maybe it would be a chance to finally reconcile their differences with-

"Commander Kazanski, we have a different role in mind for VF-3 at this time. You'll be detached from the 3rd Wing for your assignment."

"Yes sir!" The Navy witch straightened up in her seat, grinning at Holly.

-

"So it's gonna be like that..." Holly sighed as she and Chris left the briefing.

"Looks that way," Chris ruffled the shorter witch's hair. "I'll see you back at the barracks for the briefing to the wing, then?"

"Yeah," Holly answered distractedly, watching Spellcaster as they made their way back to their Quonset hut. "I shouldn't be long, just wanna take care of a few things."

"Whatever..." Chris shook her head. "I can stick around if-"

"There's not gonna be a fight, Chris." Holly tried to assure her friend, waving her off.

Holly followed Spellcaster a distance, trying to find a way to pull Kazanski aside for a chat. Bishop was at the front of the pack, ticking off a list of personal complaints he had with Spellcaster's assignment: launch before sun up, a target that might be on Shemya island at the ass-end of the Aleutians, CSAR a big question mark, possible Soviet academy witches and Super Flankers. The squadron was essentially going in alone with all that standing against them.

Holly had volunteered part of her wing for the job to act as support, but the request had been flatly denied. She hadn't done it because she thought Spellcaster was incompetent, she had done it out of concern. Even with their fancy new steelwing, and a "witch carrier" to ferry the girls out towards the target area, the spotty nature of the intel was raising every single alarm in her mind.

She wanted to talk with Kazanski and see if there was something—anything—she could do to make their job a bit easier-

“It's like they want me to get killed here,” Bishop said casually.

“Don't even joke about that shit, Bishop.” Kazanski snarled, whirling on the pilot, her hands balling into fists. She looked caught somewhere between anger and sudden, intense sorrow. “Don't you even fucking joke about that!”

'Oh my God, how dumb can he possibly be?' Holly buried her face into a palm.

-

With Kazanski clearly in no mood to talk after Bishop decided to shove both feet into his mouth, Holly chose to go look for Wilkins instead. As of now, all personnel involved with tomorrow morning's operation were more or less being confined to quarters, barring an emergency or a very short run to the mess hall. Possibly even under guard.

She walked past a Bradley Fighting Vehicle that was parked ominously in front of the hangar, and it was then that the reality of the situation truly hit home. In less than ten hours, she'd be on her way to the front lines once more.

The hangar doors were mostly closed, the occasional ground crewman entering and leaving through the small opening that remained. It was wide enough for Holly to see Wilkins performing one last walk-around of the workspace surrounding Holly's strikers. His whole demeanor seemed to improve upon seeing Holly.

He was relieved to see her—happy to see her.

She once believed it impossible for her to have that effect on a man, but she could see that she did for Will.

She wondered if he knew that she felt the same about him.

"Sorry, no movie tonight," Holly said sadly.

"We heard about the operation through a runner," Will took a seat next to the strikers, beckoning Holly to sit with him. "Kinda missed you at lunch today..."

"Only kinda?"

"More than kinda," he laughed.

"Same here." She leaned against him.

"Nervous?" He wrapped an arm around Holly, pulling her tighter against himself.

"More than a little," Holly admitted. "I'm not supposed to say that out loud, don't tell anyone."

"Didn't hear a thing."

"There's just so much I wanna do before take off tomorrow, so many things I want to try to get wrapped up before I sleep," she said quietly. "At least I'm getting one of those things done now, but there's just not enough hours left before go-time, y'know?"

"Yeah... As soon as word came down about the op, we policed the whole damn hangar. Hell I'd challenge the General himself to find something out of place right now!"

"Technically I'm not supposed to be here at the moment," Holly said sheepishly.

"Let's see someone tell me to escort you outta here." They both laughed at that.

A long time passed with them just sitting together in silence. She would occasionally steal a glance up at Will, and he would grin at her, resting contentedly against one of her Striker units. She honestly thought it was unfair that she was able to feel so happy and at peace just before a sortie like this.

The lights of the hangar dimmed as a skeleton crew came on shift to take over for Will's teams: the unlucky witches still on BARCAP needed someone to receive them. Nobody bothered them the whole time, something she was immensely grateful for. If movie night was being canceled on account of war, she wanted at least this moment with Will.

"They're probably waiting for me at the barracks..." Checking her wristwatch, Holly reluctantly broke their shared silence. "You'll see me off in the morning, yeah?"

"Definitely."

"Good, that's..." Her voice started to waver. "I'll, uhm, I'll see you then."

"Yeah..."

She started to stand up, gently shrugging his hand off of her shoulder before giving up and sitting back down, placing his arm back around her shoulder. She shook her head back and forth repeatedly, wringing her hands together nervously.

'Now or never, MacLeod,' she thought.

"I'm gonna say something," she said, trembling as she spoke. "I'm gonna say something, and I know you're gonna tell that I didn't need to say it, so don't... say that, okay?" She took several breaths, trying to calm herself down as she came to her feet and stood in front of him. "I'm sayin' it now, because I dunno if I'll have another chance."

"I'm listening."

"Okay." Another breath, a nervous laugh. She placed her hands on his shoulders, more to steady herself than anything. "This past week, the movie nights, playing on your NES, just sitting around and talking about anything that has nothing to do with me being a witch, and you being a mechanic? Being there for me when I'm not... at my best?" She moved closer to him. "Thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I've never looked forward to returning from a sortie at night more than I have after meeting you."

"This is the part where I tell you that you don't need to thank me," Will said quietly. "But you're welcome."

"I've thanked you for other stuff, I know, but I just wanted say it again, alright?" She blinked rapidly, leaning closer to him.

"I like-" she started wondering just when the hell someone had sneaked a dozen space heaters all around her. "I like... I really, *really* like yuuuuh-" she badly faked a yawn- "hanging out with you. A lot." She finally committed to hugging Will, all but falling onto him. "M-more than a lot. I don't want that to stop."

"I like you too, MacLeod," Wilkins grunted, half-laughing, half-coughing.

"Wh-why don't you just shout it for everyone to hear!?" She squeezed him tighter.

"I...can if you want..." Will said, sounding stressed quite suddenly. "H-hey, can you-"

"You're not kidding me, are you?" She pressed herself against him harder now. "D-do you really mean-”

"-kneeisinmystomach-"

"OHMIGAWDI'MSOSORRY!" Holly practically threw herself off of Wilkins. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry!"

"It's okay, Holly..." He started to laugh.

"Oh. My. Gawd." She groaned.

"And no, I wasn't kidding."

"About liking me," she sniffled, "or about it being okay that I just knee'd you in the stomach 'cause I'm really sorry about that, really really-"

"Both."

She pulled him off the ground into another hug.

-

Will ended up escorting Holly back to the barracks, though she would later admit that she didn't remember much other than feeling so warm inside that she was certain the cold would never bother her again.

"See you in the morning," he promised. With another wave, he jogged off toward his own barracks, clearly in high spirits.

She watched him as he shrank into the distance until he was out of sight. She stayed outside even then, until the cold finally did start to affect her and the Army private assigned as the barrack' guard waved his hand in front of Holly's face, wondering if she was alright.

"I'm fine, r-really."

"Aye ma'am, I'm sure you are." He grinned. "Parting is such sweet sorrow, huh?"

She sighed. "Very."
