Preliminary rule set for an idea of what I'm going for, likely to change-> http://pastebin.com/b0GJZJXe

Welcome to Harem Protag Quest. You are John Galt, the sentient protagonist of a harem show. Aside from having to gather and keep your harem, you will have to deal with various other obstacles at the Cassandra College of Witches.

Last episode you built your world, met a few girls and successfully flirted for a little bit after managing to mostly pay attention in English Class.

>Current Protag Points 1.9
>Current Mana 10/10.

You are now on your way towards your next destination for the day, Basic summoning.

Looking around you don't see much beyond the generic crowds, certainly not the gorgeous beauty you saw before and nobody you recognize, not that you know more than Christiane, Professor Weise and whoever that girl was.

You could change that if you wanted, summon an NPC companion to just be a friend. It'd cost you though you're sure.

>Might be a good idea. -.1 Protag points, NPC friend gained.

>Nah, not yet lets see what happens in class: Just head to class.

>Nah, I want to wander: Skip class, possibility of random event.

Hold on, from what OP has described stuff, we just compel people to talk to us/ be receptive to us, not create them. We are manipulative mind mage.

You shake your head as you push your way through the bland mostly indistinct background characters. No need for that yet, you haven't even made it through your first day as a student, no need to create things the story might throw your way.

It doesn't take you long till you make it to the Summoning building, it's a little farther away then most due to the unstable nature of some of the summoned objects but nothing tiring.

Walking into class you see the teacher is a wizened old lady, certainly not harem material.

Taking a seat you glance around, not noticing anyone else that might possibly have importance to the thin wisp of a plot you currently have.

Class goes similar to English, with the teacher going over the syllabus and calling roll with the same tittering you got before. But you ignore it for now, it's something you'll have to deal with for a long time.

As the teacher drones on about the basis of summoning magic you try to stay awake, everyone knows this stuff. Then she says something you dread just slightly.

"Everyone please summon your familiar," she asks, "As this is widely considered the simplest and easiest summon for any magic user."

You hear some chanting and a few swishes as more and more familiars appear around their masters.

With a sigh you begin to summon yours, even you can get this right on the first try.

What do you summon?

Also, any comments on the random ass rules I currently have?

I'd say it'll be simpler to just express protag points on a larger scale, say of 10 or 100, instead of 1.

makes sense
change it to a pool of 200, rather than 2.00

With a muted pop you summon your familiar, just a little thought and a flick of a finger is all it takes.

>Mana -1 9/10

"I see you've finally deigned to summon me again," says your familiar as he appears, a flaming, top-hat wearing skull, with an obnoxious British accent, "What mess are you going to have me clean up this time? Chips perhaps? Or maybe you're simply..." He pauses as he finally looks around the room. "Oh, I see." He fixes you with a glance and somehow manages to adjust his monocle without hands. "You my good sir, are boned."

"Shut up Jenkins," you say shortly, hitting him offhandedly to at least make him be quiet for a second. This is why you didn't enjoy summoning him, he was always a smart-ass and it drew the wrong kind of attention from the people around you, mostly female's who you were looking to impress, or at least not alienate.

"Settle down, settle down" says the teacher, waving her hand and causing most of the familiars to settle, Jenkins included.

"As you know, the stronger your bond with your familiar, the more powerful it and by extension yourself will be."

As she goes on you pay as much attention as you can, but Jenkins takes to floating around behind you like a nosy butler, peering over you shoulders and annoying the hell out of you.

Finally you're released from class. Checking your schedule you see you don't have any classes until 1, it's currently 11.

You decide:

>To go grab lunch, it's a little early but that breakfast biscuit wasn't nearly enough.

>Explore campus, getting to know the area never hurt anything.

>Go back to your dorm and take a nap, you're tired.

Deciding to explore a little bit, you head off towards the center of campus. As you walk Jenkins floats behind you, providing a running commentary on various things, mostly the girls.

"I'm not sure what you did to get in this place, but I'd be happy to give you a hand with all these ladies...if I had one at least."

That was one of Jenkins main reasons for being such a smart ass, he claimed that he should be a full skeleton and was being held back by your lack of skill. You weren't sure if you believed him or not, or actually cared. Floating skull Jenkins was enough to deal with.

As you reach the center of campus you notice several things that might be interesting.

>There's a small crowd over there with cameras and microphones, what could it be.

With a wave of your hand you dismiss Jenkins. Goddamn annoying skull, you might like him a little more if he'd shut up. Or maybe just not be such an ass.

Classes were dull and Jenkins got on your nerves, so you decide to go take a nap by those trees. Setting your bag down beside you, you manage to find a comfy spot and close your eyes, slipping into a light nap.

But you're not actually asleep, or rather it seems you've slipped into another one of those Protagonist background building segments nobody else sees.

>Choose how to distribute your skill points. You currently have 4, with Novice rank in all four schools of magic and an Average physical build. You can put point into any or all of these five in any manner you want. All of these skills can be increased at a latter time, this is simply starting out.

Yeah. Enchanting seems the best for what we want to do. It seems to encompass buffs, which we want since we're going to have a party to fight things with, creating magic items, which is useful for ourselves and allies, and possibly even mind magic, which will be useful for the relationship front.

As you flip through your options, you decide that you want to have at least SOMETHING you don't suck at. And based off what little background you've given yourself, you seem to be a good worker, meaning that enchantment, which is one of the more physical areas of Magic, is right up your alley.

As you make your choice, you feel knowledge flood into your mind, you know nearly everything there is to know about enchanting, at least in theory. The only thing that is currently stopping you from being one of the most in demand enchanters in the world is the fact that you simply can't control enough magic for the big things, as well as a lack of formal training.

>Current enchantments: Force, Resist and Shield. Provides a +5 bonus for Attack, Magic and Physical defense for one round. Must be prepared in advance. Cost: 3 Mana.

As the dark area passes from you mind, you wake up in the real world as well, feeling slightly more rested despite the soft weight on your chest.

Opening your eyes you see what appears to be a slightly older girl resting on your chest. She has blue hair, a happy if sleepy looking face and a rather large chest which is pressed against you with no regard for the fact that you have absolutely no idea who she is.

Despite the rather pleasant feeling of her curves being pressed against your body and the relaxed feeling you currently have, you decide that you simply have to wake her, even if just for her name.

Reaching down you take a hand and brush some of her wild hair out of her face, causing her to mumble cutely and squirm slightly against you, not an unpleasant sensation at all.

You do this again as a few strands escape and her eyes slowly open just a little, revealing soft, sleepy green eyes that manage to track up to your face.

"Hi," you say, smiling at her a bit, "I'm John, John Galt."

At first she doesn't say anything, simply trying to nuzzle back into your chest, before looking back up, slightly less sleepy looking despite her reluctance.

"Tatsuko...Itagaki," she say to you, her voice seemingly like the rest of her, soft and sleepy yet mildly endearing.

>-.05 Protag Points. Tatsuko Itagaki is now a Potential Harem member.

With a soft gurgle your stomach reminds you it hasn't been fed in nearly four hours and that little breakfast sandwich you ate isn't going to hold you any longer. Looking down at the still sleepy girl holding your waist you decide you want to get to know her a little better.

"Tatsuko, I'm kinda hungry at the moment," you say to her, "Want to come get lunch with me? I'll treat." You figure it's a small enough price to pay for her company. It's not like you really need money at the moment, seeing as you have a decent savings account built up from working and she seems like a nice girl, the looks don't hurt a bit either.

At the mention of food the formerly sleepy girl perks up, eyes opening nearly all the way. "You want to eat with me?" she asks.

"Yeah, if that's ok with you," you reply.

"Ok," she replies happily.

>+2 Affection points for Tatsuko.

As she gently rolls off of you, you stretch your legs and then stand, turning to look at your new friend.

Surprisingly you don't have to look down at her, in fact you think she's actually a little taller than you. With a smile she looks at you, apparently waiting for you to take the lead. Glancing around you realize that you don't actually know where the nearest dining area is.

"Do you know where we could eat?" You ask her, "I haven't explore much yet."

With a nod that shakes her slightly messy hair back over her face, she takes your hand, not quite dragging you towards your destination.

As you walk, you ask her something that's been on your mind since you woke up.

"Why were you laying on me?" You say to her.

"You looked comfy," is all she says in reply.

"I looked comfy?" you ask, slightly confused as to how that made any sense.

To this she simply nods, leading you towards a smaller building with a steady stream of girls going in and out.

As you enter you glance around. This sure is a well stocked place, you can see a little bit of everything, there's a sandwich bar, some Italian, even a grill.
>>
>>30989275
As you look around you see Tatsuko looking longingly towards the Grill, specifically at someone who just received what seems to be nearly an entire cow on a plate, along with what seems like have a potato field and a liter or so of gravy.

But she's not saying anything, just looking and you did say you would pay.

>Sandwich Bar: Cheap, easy and will hold you over, for a while at least.

>Italian: Filling and tasty, a little more expensive but worth the price.

>Grill: That steak does look good and Tatsuko seems to want some, you could probably get a smaller portion if you didn't think you could eat all of that.

It's really easy to see what your companion wants and it's not like you don't agree with her that it looks good.

Catching her eye you smile and nod towards the grill. "That looks good, think you might be able to eat there?"

The smile she gives you is enormous and blots out any worries of the amount of money you might be spending.

+2 Affection points for Tatsuko

As you head over and order, a full order for Tatsuko and half for yourself, you look around. You don't immediately spot anyone you recognize in the crowd, but you could drop some points to make them appear you're sure. Or you could simply grab some food and chat with Tatsuko.

>Eat, this smells damn good and you are HUNGRY.
>Eat and talk, while this is good, you'd like to get to know Tatsuko a little better.

>>
>>30989639
>Eat and talk, while this is good, you'd like to get to know Tatsuko a little better.
drop points to make sure that Tatsuko, Christiana, and Akeno-expy are all together in at least one of our classes, and that we have all of them alone in at least one as well
>>
>>30989639
>Eat, this smells damn good and you are HUNGRY.
Feed the fooood, find food feed to feed fine food~
>>
>>30989674
Yeah but we plan on actually doing the deed.
>>
>>30989674

You're kind of missing the point. This early on in a harem show, the protagonist has to reveal that he's worth chasing in the first place, which means meeting as many girls as possible and being nice to them.

Later, the girls will be the ones pursuing him, but you need to make yourself notable first. Put yourself out there, and get involved in the plot. Not to mention that scenes like these also tease at shipping, when the audience goes:

> "Wow, they look so cute together!"
>>
>>30989639
if we can, subtly enchant her food to taste better
>eat and talk
>>
>>30989678
this is good, if its fairly low-cost. It probably will be, since that should be in any standard harem show
>>
>>30989678
this could be prohibitively expensive, but we should do it if we can. We already have Christi (which is what I'm calling her from now on because I can't remember how the fuck to spell her full name) in a class alone, so that should knock it down a little too
>>
>>30989678

I'm still waiting to meet the Akeno-expy. The Majikoi girls aren't doing too much for me.
>>
>>30989639
>>Eat and talk, while this is good, you'd like to get to know Tatsuko a little better.

Gotta spend quality time with each girl before we start gathering them all up.
>>
>>30989692
It will be done regardless
>>30989708
It's gonna happen anyway. That's protag's magic. Whatever we do, girls are gonna love us for it
Besides, didn't we meet Tatsuko just by laying there?
>>
>>30989678
same as the others, spend points like this if it's fairly cheap
>>30989757
but how and why the girls love us is extremely important for the development arcs in later episodes
>>
Looks like eating and talking has won.

Also, >>30989678
is an option. It'll cost you .05 points.

You've also now dropped an additional .05 points on Tatsuko, giving you a total of .1 invested in her but that one was covered by the plot as you were doing the protagonist's job and pushing the plot.
>>
>>30989757

It kind of feels like you're missing the point of the Quest. We're literally here to give the audience what they want, seriously. We need to push the plot forward.
>>
>>30989786
spend the .05, after which we should start trying to do 'protagonist-like' things to see what recovers points
>>
>>30989786
spend the points, that was less than meeting first girl
>>
>>30989786
spend them.
we should start figuring out some ways to get these points back, too. Can't lose our protag status because we didn't figure out a basic mechanic like that
>>
>>30989786
Don't spend, I say we all have them in different classes at first. Don't want to jump the gun just yet. Gather information and observe first.
>>
>>30989786
spend the points, they are easily recoverable for this as this sets up plot advancement.
>>
>>30989792
I don't disagree, I just think we don't need to apply as much effort as you think to that end
>>30989775
They'll decide that themselves, I'm sure
>>
>>30989936
oh, we don't have to really do a whole hell of a lot. But it will make things a lot more interesting and dynamic, at least in my opinion. An MC who just sits around and lets things happen is less interesting than one who pushes for results
>>
>>30989950

Exactly. Besides, what else are going to do in the Quest? It's boring to watch someone who's disinterested.
>>
>>30989950
Yeah, consider we picked aware. We should show some more initiative and "get shit done".
>>
>>30989757
>Besides, didn't we meet Tatsuko just by laying there?

The decision to lie there came at the opportunity cost of not doing the other things, which likely would also have resulted in meeting a girl, girls that we now won't meet until later or maybe at all. Even when we do nothing, it is a decision to do nothing rather than do something else, an equal investment to selecting any other option on the VN screen.
>>
As your food comes up you dismiss the thought in your head, simply wanting to eat and possibly get to know Tatsuko a little better.

Finding a relatively out of the way table, you sit down with the blue haired girl, who immediately starts digging into the enormous hunk of meat in front of her.

Chuckling just a bit at her eagerness you start to eat your own steak and HOLY SHIT that's good. Juicy, tender nearly melting in your mouth you aren't sure why people don't eat this every meal. But then again, this is the first time you've ever had steak.

Chowing down, you make a respectable dent in your food, but Tatsuko seems to be eating like she hasn't been fed in three days. As you slow from being full you find the breath to ask her a few questions.

"How long have you been at Cassandra?" you ask.

She briefly holds up two finger, which you guess makes her a junior.

"Are you from around here?"

A shake of her head, then "Japan."

"What're you studying?"

A confused look then her eyes light up briefly and a nearby fly gets zapped by electricity. You guess that means she's primarily a Casting Witch.

"Any family?"

That actually causes her to slow down, along with the fact that there's only a few scraps of potato and some gravy left on her plate. But she seems...sad almost when you ask that.

"Two sisters and a brother," she says, "I miss them, we were always close. I only get to see them on holiday's now."

You nod, patting her hand as she stares at the table.

"We all get homesick sometimes," you say to her understandingly.

With that the two of you finish your meal in silence, not that it takes very long. Putting your trays away the two of you step outside and you check your phone. It's 12:50, meaning you have to head out for your next class.

"See you around?" you ask Tatsuko, who nods eagerly.

"You're comfy," she says, like that's the only reason you need to hang out together.

You smile at her, turning back towards her and nodding. "Sure, Hugs."

You approach her, planning on just a normal hug. Sure you thought about maybe seeing what you could do to maybe feel a little more, but before that thought has time to truly form the choice is taken away from you.

Tatsuko's arms reach out and grab your head, pulling it down and OH DEAR LORD THOSE ARE SOFT.

Your arms instinctively wrap around her as well, but most of your thoughts are focused on the fact that you're currently getting a face-full of mammary.

"You're nice," she says to you softly, "Let me sleep, don't yell, buy me food." She pauses there. "I'm glad you're my friend, I don't have very many."

>+3 Affection for Tatsuko. You now have 7.

With that she lets you go, your head popping out of her cleavage as she turns and walks away, waving at you with that same sleepy smile.
