Welcome to Harem Protag Quest. You are John Galt, the sentient protagonist of a harem show. Aside from having to gather and keep your harem, you will have to deal with various other obstacles at the Cassandra College of Witches.

>Mechanics: http://pastebin.com/MuXRzApY
>Character sheet: http://pastebin.com/TdBKC27p

>Current Stats:
>Protag Points: 190
>Mana 10/10
>Harem Status 0/5

Last time in Harem Protag Quest you summoned your familiar, a flaming skull named Jenkins who happened to be a mildly annoying smart-ass. After that you chose to excel at Enchanting, leaving everything else for growth. Finally you met and befriended Tatsuko Itagaki, a sleepy, friendly girl who decided to cuddle you in your sleep. After taking her to a nice lunch, you decided to meet her again, leaving her as the only girl close to joining your nascent harem.

Striding into your next class, Enchantment 306, you see that despite being an advanced class, it’s still relatively full. Of course there are only girls in the class, you don’t think anyone else as new to magic as you are would put all their effort into Enchanting.

Looking around you see a couple open seats, enough for some variety at least.

>Sit up front: you’re good at this, might as well learn everything you can.
>Sit in the middle: You may not catch as much as you would up front, but you won’t miss anything important and you might find someone to chat with.
>Sit in the back: You’ve got this shit down, relax while you can.

this is the one class we really need to have down. We can sit in the middle and chat during most of our other classes. Plus, being a master of enchantment already'll probably catch the attention of any 'plot-related' girls in the class and/or hot enchantment teacher

we'll slack off in Casting, since Tatsuko's got that down and we really need her in the harem

Hell, you're already pretty good at this, learning every last bit that you can will only help you in the long run.

Taking a seat that's nearly front and center you get out your notebook, preparing to take notes. The teacher seems to be late, at least she's not here at the moment.

Glancing to your right you see a girl, who happens to have something to set her out from the generic crowd.

Blue hair.

What is it with this show and blue hair? Do you happen to have some kind of hidden fetish for blue?

Anyway.

>Introduce yourself, she seems like a serious student, maybe you can learn some things from her.

>Just wait for the teacher, you're not interested at the moment.

Or, failing that, something to help with basic household chores. We're a harem protagonist. We're not going to have the time.

Deciding to see if you can learn anything before class starts you flip towards the back of the book, happening upon a page describing how to automate basic household items. Nothing exciting, but it might come in handy.

Writing down the runes in your notebook, you feel a little spark jump from your pen to your hand as you finish. Wincing a little bit you shake your hand, examining it a bit out of habit.

"What did you just do?" you hear come from your right.

"What?" you ask, turning to see the the blue haired girl staring at your notebook.

"You just enchanted that pen," she says again, "You just enchanted that pen in a minute flat with an advanced automation spell and you didn't even look like you were trying."

You turn towards your notebook, seeing the pen standing upright, apparently waiting for something to take down.

>Mana -2 now 8/10

Well, if we lied, it'd be pretty bad if she said "Cool, can you enchant mine too?" and then we were unable to.

Bad idea to lie about things so easily tested.

"Oops," you say as you look at the pen.

"OOPS?" says the girl, her face now somewhere between apoplexy and awe, "That's all you have to say?!"

Looking at the girl you shrug, "I was just seeing if I could make sense of it, I didn't even mean to activate it."

The girl looks at you and her face seems to flex between wanting to stab you and wanting to crib your notes.

Finally she turns and dives into her bag, pulling out a thick old book and flipping through to what appears to be a very specific page.

"Here" she says, thrusting the book under your nose and then placing a small knife two small blocks of what appears to be gold by your hand, "Try this."

Glancing over the page, you can see this is some kind of old, nearly lost magic. Glancing up you can tell by the look on her face she doesn't expect you to be able to do it and is just testing you, seeing if you can make heads or tails of the complex runes.

Looking back down you look closer. You don't think you have anywhere near enough mana to actually activate it, but if you drop some Protag power you could probably pull it off.

With a deliberate thought you throw power at the blot, bending it around you.

> -10 Protag Points. Total 180

You feel yourself fall into a trance, instinctively taking the knife, also enchanted, and inscribing the runes on one of the pieces of gold.

You don't notice the soft glow appearing around your hands or the gasp of the girl beside you. All you feel is the gold and the runes, along with the power flowing through you as you inscribe ancient power into the metal.

You wake up out of your fugue a short time later, two inscribed blocks now in your hands. Shaking your head a little you look up at her, finding concern on her formerly stern visage.

Giving her a smile you hold up the blocks, "Two things, what's your name and what did I just do?"

"Chidori...Kaname Chidori..." she says as she takes the blocks from your hand and stares at them.

"And you just re-made one of the oldest, most secure forms of communications in existence."

>Enchantment Learned, Ancient Knowledge. You now have the ability to create a two way, unbreakable, un-scryable communications link between any two people holding the enchanted objects. Cost 50 mana to create. 5 mana to activate. Must use high-level purified materials for creation.

As you try to process what she just said and the knowledge flooding into your head, she drops the blocks and grabs your collar, bringing your face in front of hers.

"You are showing me how you did that," she says, eyes demanding.

"What?" you say, blinking at her.

"You are damn well going to show me how you managed to do something in five minutes that I've been trying for two years!" she says, voice peaking towards the end.

"Buy me dinner first?" you say, wondering what made you say that.

"Buy you dinner?" she asks, "You want me to buy you dinner first?"

You nod.

She laughs then, a chuckle coming out almost manic sounding.

"Yes, yes fine I'll buy you dinner if you show me how you did that."

"John Galt," you say offering your hand, "Call me John."

She drops your collar, sighing and rubbing her temples as she takes your hand.

>Due to your fantastic enchanting ability, Kanami has drawn herself into your harem on her own volition.

Anyways, anybody else looking forward to the moment when somebody calls us out on the harem shenanigans, and we point out "with the thousands of women on campus with very limited romantic opportunities, there are going to be some perfectly fine with polyamory: thus, I shall have my cake, and eat it too"?

I don't know about the rest of you, but I want to drive this in a very straightforward "yes I want to be going with several girls at once" direction. I think it would be a refreshing change from stereotypical anime harems.

You wait for five minutes, until you're absolutely sure that the teacher isn't coming. With a sigh, you pack up your things standing as you decide to go wander, you have nearly and hour until your next class.

Kanami follows you, her eyes staring at your face as if you were some runes she could decipher.

As you make it outside, attractive Blue-haired girl following you, you head back towards the main quad, wondering if that big crowd is still there.

As you walk, you can't help but feel a little aware of Kanami staring at you.

"Can I help you?" you ask her.

"I'm trying to figure you out," she says, not breaking the eye contact, "You're a male, you shouldn't be able to do that automate spell, much less Ancient Witch Magic that easily."

Normally you'd take offense to that, but her tone is less condescending and more factual.

You shrug your shoulders, "I've just always been good with things like that," you reply.

"Hmm," she says, peering harder then looking down as you walk, apparently thinking about something.

You reach the main quad again, it looks much like before. However the crowd seems to be smaller and currently breaking up and you can see that the students out playing have changed. The tree's still look nice though, maybe even better than before due to your experience with Tatsuko.

You do notice something you didn't last time, a few tables off to the side where you could sit if you felt like.

Rather tthan the straightfoward persuing, I meant the MC actually living up the the series premise and actually winding up with multiple girls in the end, *regardless of methods* is a rather novel approach to a harem series.

Seriously, it's sad when a show following through its basic premise is kinda shocking.

>>31009304
Eh, I thought I was clear that I thought that would be refreshing.

In any case, other lurking issue is establishing a plot: we chose Aware, so we need to make the plot ourselves and be a little less passive. A pure harem plot will be physically safe, but may be difficult to keep going; establishing some other sort of plot may sort of force the QM to keep throwing things at us.
>>

Pretty sure we drained our mana out oh making that thing...maybe

I really want there to be a bbeg style villain, I mean, that's kind of why we took enchanting, to buff our harem as they fight our battles

Despite the pull of the trees or the mild curiosity you have towards whatever caused that big crowd to gather, you head over towards the tables, figuring that Kanami isn't going to leave you alone for awhile, even if you wanted her to. As you walk the wind plays against her skirt slightly, revealing a little more of her legs. You wonder briefly how they compare to Tatsuko's.

Plopping down on one of the fixed benches, you set your bag down, pulling out the notebook with the Automate runes in it, going over them so you don't forget. Kanami sits across from you, bag on top of the table as she pulls out the two engraved golden blocks.

"So how did you get something like that anyway?" You ask her, glancing up as you do so.

"Get what?"
"A book that old, I mean if it's so Ancient and stuff why do you have it?"

She looks up at you, eyes breaking from their deep study of the objects.

"It's a family heirloom, it's been around for generations."
"Is that how you got into enchanting?"
She nods. "My family has been doing it on and off for a long time, it of course depended on who was born with enough strength to do the more complex runes."

You nod at this, many witching lines passed tradition down from generation to generation. You wonder if your epilogue will have your progeny shown doing enchanting or not.

As Kanami goes back to studying the runes you look around, breeze blowing again.
Someone catches your eye, it's that hot dark-haired chick from earlier.

>Leave Kanami to her studying, go try and hook in the dark haired girl.

As you stand, throwing your notebook in your bag, Kanami glances up at you.

"Leaving?" she asks, half of her attention still on the runes.

You nod, "I have some things I want to do," you say, leaving out that most of those things involve oogling or pursuing girls. Damn this job is cushy and not just because Tatsuko gave you a hug either.

"Alright," she says, apparently disinterested in your reasons for leaving. She hands you one of the blocks of gold.

Looking down at it you raise your gaze and then one of your eyebrows at her.

"For when I want to pick your brain more," she says off handedly.

"Alright," you say, giving her a small wave goodbye as you head towards the dark-haired beauty.

As you approach her you can't help but appreciate the fact that her bust seems to be very bit as gravity defying as most of the girls you've seen before. But less of that, you have to have a plan. You have no good reason to approach her, not at the moment at least. And she's with a few, slightly less generic characters, probably her friends.

Glancing around, you can't think of a good way to approach her. Granted, you have all the experience of a three year old actually talking to women but you are in a harem anime so you have to do something. You decide to push the plot along, wondering when it will actually kick in.

>-5 Protag points, total now 175. Mana at 3/10.

Immediately after you drop some points, you see another group of girls heading towards the one your target is in. These girls seem a little more...thuggish, for a lack of a better word. Then most of the generic's you've seen.

As the two groups near, you see the dark-haired girls step up front, a hard look taking place of the smile you'd seen previously. The lead delinquent girls seems to have the same face, neither one veering from the other. You walk a little closer so you can watch the upcoming clash, which by the looks of it could be rather serious.

The two groups stop about two feet from each other, both leaders glaring the other down.

"Akeno..." growls the leader at the girl you've been following.

"Yes?" Akeno says sweetly to the girl, the hard look on her face not changing one Iota.

"Don't think I've forgotten what you did to me last semester!" growls the delinquent, "I'm going to get you for humiliating me like that."

"You threatened my friends," says Akeno, a ball of lightning appearing in her hand, "You should be glad you got off as lightly as you did."

The other girl visibly gulps as the lightning forms, but then straightens out slightly. "The ban is still in place," she says, trying to sound tough.

"I'll be back here tomorrow at the same time if you want to go again."

With that the delinquent visibly quails, before flipping her head as if she was in control the entire time. "Tch, I don't have time for this." With a flick of her hand her group moves of to the side, most glaring darkly at Akeno and her friends despite being obviously scared.
>>
>>31010968
>Physical = skill
Pretty sure Physical simply refers to actual strength, not skill
>>
>>31010968
I think we should have a soft focus into learning summoning, with a bit of physical on the side. Granted we are "average" physical, which, plus a magic sword, is still nothing to laugh at.
>>
>>31010968
Dude, the only enchanting spell we have right now can be used to improve our physical ability by 5 points. All we need to do is get better and longer lasting versions of that. We can make a strength boosting belt or some gauntlets.

While a couple points in physical might be good early on to save mana, it's going to be outpaced by spells eventually.
>>
>>31011002
>Akeno is now a potential Harem member. 5 points invested.

Well shit, you think, something about the setting that you didn't know about before, might want to figure it out before it bites you in the ass.

Looking back, Akeno's face appears to be more tired tan anything, but it shifts back to a smile as one of her friends pats her on the shoulder and says something you can't quite hear. Then she looks up, her eyes catching yours.

Well at least you have an in now.

Isn't that what I said? We have a spell that improves our physical power a fair amount considering we can cast it readily. Just imagine if we double or triple that number. We're going to quickly arrive at the point where an enchanting spell is just as effective as a single point of physical.
>>
>>31011101
The problem is that if somethings prevents us from summoning or using our magic than we are shit outta luck, with enchanting we can have permanent boosts to our allies and ourselves.

speaking of which, at the end of every day/before taking naps with Tatsuko(it's going to happen, probably daily) we should empty our Mana reserves and try to stack those one-off enchantments on us as much as possible. That doesn't make for good television. Guys, you're missing the point here! The way a show works is that you give people what they want to see; You handwave the rest!

An episode where the protagonist spends all the time studying isn't a good episode. However, an episode where one of the girls comes over to help him study - Or two, and they spend the time trying to one-up each other - is way better.

You can handwave the rest as having some kind of breakthrough later.
>>
>>31011350
if we can, just set this as a nighttime ritual or something so we don't have to vote every time. If we're really lucky, those enchantments can stack with themselves so we can get retarded bonuses for a few rounds if need be. If not, we still need a lot on us, so we can maintain wards for a full combat
>>
>>31011436

Here's a question: Why not just create a small focus item that allows us to drop all the enchantments at once? Make it a glove (The 'Gunner's Glove') or some kind of cool transformation trinket.

That way, it's an excuse for more merchandising and to give us a distinctive and iconic item. More, it also allows for plot development:

Well, you aren't going to get a much better opening than this and with the world designed for you to literally drown in women it shouldn't be all that hard to talk to her. As you approach the group the others turn towards you, but your eyes are mostly focused on Akeno, who has a small smile playing around her pretty lips.

"John Galt," you say to her as you reach hand shaking distance, holding yours out to her to take.

"Akeno Himejima," she says in reply, taking your hand with one of her slightly dainty ones. It's soft, nice to hold and not anywhere near as scary as it was only a minute ago. "Sorry about causing a scene like that."

"It's fine," you say, smiling just a little, "It looked like you dealt with it as best you could. Speaking of which, do things like that happen a lot?"

Akeno frowns just a bit, before the smile comes back, almost teasingly. "You mean they left that part out?"

"What part?"

"The part where most issues at Witch schools are solved by fighting and anything goes as long as the other one doesn't die?"

Oh, yeah, that part kinda did get left out.

How do you respond?

My idea is that it 'stores' the enchantments, and - When we activate it - It drops all of them on us at once. Basically, it's a simple battery: We renew the enchantments each night, but it's only good for one 'shot' at things.

Hell, it could give us a synergy bonus, like a spontaneous suit of armour. If we're making a rushed prototype, maybe all we get is a pair of boots or an armoured arm.

Basically get a small bag of marbles or something. Enchant each one with a different stat boost spell. Then pull them out when needed. Never thought of that. Could work.
>>
>>31011630

You know, that's an excellent idea. It gives us an excuse to tailor our arsenal accordingly, per episode. With Protagonist Points, we might be able to fiat having the right tool on hand at any one time.

Looks like a little bit of everything, but advice definitely won.

>>
>>31011707

Rings! Rings are great. Marbles are kind of silly, but rings are iconic for a magician. The glove sounds cooler, but rings work, too.

In fact, we might start with the rings and move on to the glove.
>>
>>31011720
Probably. After all, you could easily enchant individual beads and string them together into a necklace anyway.
>>
>>31011735
Yeah, and if the rings are especially unique, they'd be merchable as fuck.
>>
>>31011735
use the gloves to cover our rings. That way, when we use the glove our opponent thinks we used our trump card
>>
>>31011735
John only has ten fingers and a ring on every finger makes people look stupid. Necklace would be better. >>31011720
>>
>>31011779

A necklace is kind of feminine, though. Unless you're going for something like Barago's pendant from GARO, I like the idea of something on your hand to be better.

I agree that I don't like the character to be burdened down with too much bling. I'd say that a glove might be best, because you could argue that any amount of stuff would work on a glove without getting in the way. (You don't even have to 'show' it on the glove, for instance.)
>>
>>31011816
Hmm, it might need engraving though, we don't know the particulars of enchanting well enough, but from what we've seen you have the symbol.
>>
>>31011816
>bead necklace being feminine
It's like you've never seen any Buddhist monks.
>>
>>31011779
Whatever we decide to use for our enchantment selection, it needs to be something small, easily organized, and easily replaced.

A necklace of beads would work well, since we could number or color them, take them off the necklace to hide in a pocket or give to someone else, and easily put new spells on it.
>>
>>31011852
A deck of cards? 52 possibilities, easily concealable.
>>
>>31011845

I'm just saying, it doesn't look cool. I've seen those necklaces, and they're rather obstructive. Something streamlined looks better for a protagonist.
>>
>>31011865
Once we have a good number of spells, that's great. Throw in joker cards too, that activate the rest of the deck when drawn
>>
>>31011871
They could be smaller beads
>>
>>31011865
In conjunction with protag power, that seems like the best option to me. We draw exactly what we need in accordance with the plot.

4 suites for the four types of magic. Offensive spells could be thrown, defensive spells could be touched or pressed to an object. As the spells become more powerful, they move up the scale, with the most powerful spells literally being an "ace up our sleeve"
>>
OP, maybe you should archive this thread. We're auto-saging now.
>>
>>31011902

It still doesn't look very good. The point of something on your hand is that you can fiddle with it without it being too obstrucive. When it's around your neck, it looks and feels slightly awkward to adjust it.
>>
>>31011927
Well, to be fair, it's not like we'd be forced to draw them in order. Although being the protagonist does mean we'd find the card we want out of the stack with minimal searching.
>>
>>31011852
I'd like to see a protag flipping through a rolodex or striking enchanted matches, myself.
>>
>>31011629

This one is the classiest idea so far. If we get a chance, later, I'll vote for this.
>>
>>31011933
and since we don't have very powerful spells right now, how about some 'lucky coins?' Pennies only have one set of basic buffs cast on them, whereas a dollar coin would let us bounce tank shells or throw cars
>>
>>31011958
Ah, I like the matches.
>>
>>31011939

>>
>>31011939
>it looks and feels slightly awkward to adjust it.
Just because you don't like wearing necklaces doesn't mean everyone does. Most men I know that wear necklaces wear them under their shirt so you can't even see them. And, what does adjusting them have to do with anything.
>>
>>31011958
Matches would be a good idea for any sort of disposable enchantments, although we'd need something more permanent for the more regular ones.
>>
holy shit /qtg/ so many fucking posts about beads
>>
Fuck, lost my post, give me a minute.
>>
>>31011989

Because we want the viewers to see us carrying it. If we wear it under our shirt, it defeats the purpose. More, you can dramatically put a glove on (or take it off), adjust a watch, or turn a ring.

You can't really dramatically...adjust the beads on your necklace. Kamen Rider traditionally uses belts, but it has never had the transformation be something you'd wear on your neck. Even the accessories have been arm or hand-mounted.

Harem Protag Quest:where we ignore most Quest arguments and instead derail the thread figuring out what accessories to make magic first

A single, iconic item is best. Don't think of this as D&D 3.5: In anime, most protagonists only have one standout artifact. The dude in Highschool DxD has a plethora of powers, but it's clear that the focus of it is the big fuckoff gauntlet he wears. It later serves as sword-holder, but that's a logical extension.

You don't want to be loaded down with bling.

>>
>>31012087

The logical conclusion of that would be a suit of armour that's summoned when we activate one item. That way, we don't have to carry all that stuff around with us.
>>
>>31012106
Like the briefcase suit in the second iron man?
>>
>>31012079
Yeah, but unless we can stack ALL of our enchantments on that one object, then we need to get something that's a bunch of items together.

Heck, we could get a long glove or gauntlet to cover our entire arm and have slots for enchanted beads or whatever.

Basically, we're trying to decide on a utility belt.

spell tattoos... that is pretty cool idea. especially if w enchant the ink so the tattoo can move and change into different spell forms and hide under our clothes till we need it
>>
>>31012121

>>
>>31012124
what if we have an enchanted glove that when activated, summons an entire suit of magic armor of which each pece is enchanted
>>
>>31012124

That one object summons all the others. In most anime, the time for fighting is very clearly defined: This is when you're talking to chicks, and this is the point in the episode where you're in a fight. You only have to worry about losing items and so on as a plot point, after which it becomes the focus of the episode.

We need to give the plot time to develop, after all. Leaving it openings would help it along.

>>31012128

Tattoos are kind of unsightly.
>>
>>31012032
Guide, replies are well over 300, might want to start a new thread.
>>
>>31012149
Better idea. What if we had a glove enchanted with some basic protection, and it had a number of (insert small objects) sewn into it, which when activated, summoned a different suit of magic armor, each of which had each piece enchanted for specific tasks. Like one for fighting pyromancers, one for stealth, etc.
>>
We could always be stereotypical and carry a notebook with spells in it.
>>
>>31012180

Basically this, but we'll have to work on getting the FIRST suit down first. Baby steps, gentlemen: Over the course of the episode, we'll make each piece of stuff.

Later on, we can talk about different suits of armour. Hell, I'd rather have one really good suit that multiple subpar ones.
>>
Enchanted Earring.
It's easier to conceal, and we can take it with us when we bathe.
Just figure out this rune magic stuff, get a little piece of quartz, or if Kaname is wiling to donate a diamond, do some work with a jeweler's eyepiece and set the stone.
>>
>>31012202
Well, it doesn't have to be entirely different suits. For example, we could enchant the suit with all of our main buffs, but have the different gems make it come with a different helmet or something, and that would have the more specialized enchantment.

"Fuck," you say under your breath, going over the combat spells you know, namely none. Sure you have your enchants, but the only one you could take advantage of for anything but running away is Force and that would require you to physically hit the person in question, something you aren't sure you could do.

“Guess I’ll have to work on my cardio then,” you say, looking up at her.

“That might work…for a while,” she says, “Until somebody really wants something from you.”

“Any advice?”

“Make some friends,” she says like it’s the most obvious thing in the world, gesturing towards hers, “The more you have, the better your options.”

We may actually want to have something for when we are caught in the bath, since this is a harem show.

I'd say rather than an earring though, we get a small tattoo, about the size of a dime, somewhere out of sight. Then we can have that enchanted to bring our actual enchanted summoning tool to our hand, and then use that to summon our other enchanted stuff.

You take a moment to think about that, you don’t really have a lot of friends at the moment. Tatsuko said you were friends, so you could probably count on her to help out even if you don’t know how good she’d be in a fight. Kanami…well she was in your harem but “friend” would be stretching it currently. She’d probably help out to keep you available for brain picking though. Other than that, the only student you could think of was Chris and even if you were neighbors, you didn’t think you were all that close yet.

“Guess I need to work on that then,” you say, giving her a wry smile.

“I don’t know, it shouldn’t be too hard for a cutie like you,” she says coyly, a smile playing on her lips.

“A cutie like me?” you ask.

“Oh, did I say that out loud?” she says, smile getting bigger, before one of her friends comes up and whispers briefly in her ear. Turning back to you, she shook her head, “Looks like I need to go, things to do and people to see.” She turns around, head rotating to give you a cheeky glance, “Maybe I’ll see you around later.”

“I think I’d like that,” you say back, eyes darting over her not at all unpleasant rear.

Her smile expands briefly once more, before she starts walking again. But before she takes more than a few steps she stops as if remembering something. “Oh yeah,” she says, “Pay attention in Physical Training class, it sucks, but it’ll help you out in the long run.” With that final piece of advice her and her friends stride away.

Looking at the enticing forms leaving, you pull out your class sheet. PHYSICAL TRAINING is printed out in bold letters as your next class. Guess you’ll have to see what you can do.

The situation doesn't really require that much preparation. Think of it narratively, guys: Protagonists never make that many plans, and eventually get plot-relevant powerups from the power of love.

Excessive planning bores the audience. We don't need to be especially cunning, we need to be likeable and entertaining as a protagonist. The true battle is to keep the story interesting, not to overwhelm every threat.

For instance, this is the kind of Quest where you let the bad guy get away, because it means a more entertaining plot later.

I like it so far. I'm wondering why all the girls have the same names as the actual characters: I think Joker Quest does a similar thing for at least one character, but they're all 'reskinned' with new personalities and so on.

Unless it's a deliberate thing, to emphasize how the characters are being 'recycled' into a new setting.

Not really. A lot of Negima's story was on powerlevels: There was very little actual planning for the fights. I'm not even sure if battles are going to be a big part of the story, come to think of it.

There's a big difference between a shonen series (Where battles are the point) and something like Highschool DxD, for instance. Even shows like Unbreakable Machine Doll, where combat is ostensibly the point, tends to gloss it over in favour of the characters.
