You’re in a bathroom. Your gloves are laying next to a large pink marble bowl topped with delicate, ornate silver faucets. Your jacket is hanging on a small metal hook.

You’re doing your best to avoid splashing any of the rose red water that’s circling down the equally beautiful drain.

Washing your prosthetic has always been...challenging. The lack of skin has always been...weird, but it’s only when you try to scrub at it does it get actively disconcerting. Something about the way the carbon fiber alternates between matte and gloss and moves (or...doesn’t) in a different way than your real hand.

You know that there are a ton of companies that produce all kinds of add ons for prosthetics. Not that the Army cared, though, with their stupid demand that all prosthetics be as skeletal as possible.

The replacements the tier 1 people got were works of art, though. You especially liked the arms that actually modeled the…

Uh.

You know, the two bones in your lower arm.

Maybe now that you’re making money. Maybe something from Sarif. Their CEO has a nice one.

Something decorative. Artsy, without being pretentious. Maybe to match your tattoos or...well, tatoo, since the matching one got blown off along with the rest of your arm.

Although you really like how his is just the amazingly beautiful silver inlay.

Hmm.

You think idly as you pull back your hair and begin scrubbing your face, doing your best to not just reopen your cut again.

You hope it won’t scar. You have enough already.

You trace a (real) finger gently over it. It doesn’t seem too deep.

You idly drag a finger over the ridges of your ocular and cheek bones as you dab at the corner of your eyes and the bags under them.

They’re still red. At least the snot and sobbing is back under control. The bags seem...normal.

You doubt they’re going to go away. At least you have the time and money for makeup now.

And showers. And a real toilet.

Real everything. Real bed. Real pillows. Real sheets.

So many things.

There’s only so much you can do in a women’s bathroom. You shut the water off and dry your hands and face off, noticing that there’s only a hint of pink residue left on the pure white towel.

There’s a porcelain bin with a dark, polished steel lid with a hole in it engraved with USED.

You toss it in there.

You return to the ready room, only getting lost once or twice, and strip down. You pick and pull at the tight black fabric of your boyshorts and sports bra. You wonder what it’d be like to wear real underwear again as you pull your old clothes back on.

Ragged, worn out, faded tan combat boots, a pair of abused, equally faded denim jeans, and one plain white tee.

You sigh, as you look at the clothing in your hand.

Miss Nakamara said you could keep it. Should you?

You wish there was a bag in the locker. You think how much more homeless you’re going to look on the bus when your front left poc- oh, right, your phone - starts vibrating.

You don’t trust those implanted units. Also it’s cheap to replace these handheld ones when they break, in addition to how much more secure they can be.

You shift your baggage over to your right arm so you can pull it out with your left. You take a glance at the screen.

You hate it when things are unlabeled. Everything in the Army had a name, even if it was useless.

You attempt to shove aside your irritation as you slide your thumb over the face of the phone and bring it to your ear. Somehow prosthetics can still use touchscreens.

You’re not sure how.

You’re about to speak, but are beaten to it.

“Good evening miss Saint Claire. We’re from the COG.”

“The...what?”

“COG. Combat Operations Group. You.”

“Oh.”

These calls rarely end well.

“I sense some trepidation. I see that today is your first day. Congratulations on your successful event. The company enjoys giving those operators who came under attack at an event the option to volunteer first before personnel selection is officially done in any retaliatory action taken against the perpetrators of that attack.

So, miss Saint Claire, are you interested in hurting those who wanted to hurt you? I’m afraid there is a time limit. We need to know immediately.”

Just curious, OPFOR, what setting is this quest based on? Or is it something you've come up with yourself?
>>
>>31072373
Setting is "loose dystopic sort of cyberpunk," with me cherry picking a lot of things from my favorite cyberpunk stuff.

Shadowrun, Do Androids Dream, Deus Ex, stuff like that.

I really love the Deus Ex Human Revolution art direction/visual aesthetic, so that'll probably play a lot into prosthetic design and fashion.

I know this will probably be less than popular, but I also really like the visual themes from the Hunger Games series. The literature itself...eh, but the visual themes of the city and the richest inhabitants are interesting.

tl;dr: A mix of a lot of other franchises/media/etc all being blended into my own made up setting.
>>
>>31071945
You don’t need time to think.

“Yes.”

“Return to your assigned ready room in your combat gear. You and your team will be briefed there.”

The call is ended, from their side. You sigh, pocket the phone, and turn right around and back the way you came.

You get dressed, again, and slump into a couch in the ready room as you yawn.

You feel exhausted and the sun, at least according to your phone, is only just starting to set.

You cross your arms and rest your head against a cushion when a hand on your shoulder startles you and you follow it back to its owner’s head.

“Sorry Michelle. I thought you heard me coming.”

Oh. It’s just Wendy. Her eyes are still a little red and, maybe, a bit puffy.

“Sure.”

You pull in your legs under you and rest your head on them as you look right towards Wendy. Her hair is out of the braid it was in earlier and instead just loose around her.

It’s pretty curly.
She says, “I don’t think Skyler is coming. He’s a big heroin user…”

Her voice bends but it doesn’t quite snap.

The two of you sit in your own little worlds for a few minutes before a deep, male voice says behind you, “Keep your eyes forward. Put the masks on.”

Someone, probably the man, tosses a pair of black woolen balaclavas in between the two of you.

You quickly put your hair up in a bun and slide the mask over your face.

You like the feeling of operational security. It’s like a blanket.

Once they’re on, someone walks out from behind you.

He has a remarkably light step in those shoes. He’s wearing a pair of steel grey slacks and mochachino wingtips with thread of gold embroidery, and his dark blue silk shirt is wrinkled and seems to have lost some of its sheen. His sleeves are rolled up.

Amen, pal.

He’s also wearing a mask.

He rubs his eyes a few times before speaking, “We’re ninety percent confident we followed the money from those goons to the source. We’ve got actionable intelligence so the plan is pretty simple. A few of their third tier idols are packing up for a performance. You’ll be riding second car. First car is going to mobility kill the bus, you’re going to sweep and clear. “Yes, you. What could possibly be confusing you?”

“Are we shooting to subdue or...you know...capture and ransom?”

He laughs. “You’re funny.”

“You’re going to kill them, and you’re going to make sure they’re dead. But, I shouldn’t have to say this as often as we do, the company is not interested in trophies, just results. This isn’t any of the Vietnams, that’s what the smartlink and other equipment is for. We don’t want any of that in or near our offices.”

Oh.

“So...why don’t we go after their tier ones or twos then?”

“Because they will kill you before they get close. Proportional response. Old America and the USSR just barely figured this out in their first Cold War. Escalation is bad for business. The phrase is an eye for an eye, not an eye for ten bodies in the morgue. They came after you, you go after them. Anything else takes risks that the company does not want to assume.

“Good. A few more fine points and you’re loading. Lead car is not a combat team. They will defend themselves, if needed, but they won’t be picking a fight. They are going to torch their vehicle and then burn the bus. From there they will command the second vehicle and pilot it to our designated rendezvous. Time will be a factor. The faster in and out the bigger your lead before their response team gets there. You don’t want to be there when their response team gets there.

If I were you, I’d flash and clear but whatever you do make sure you’re thorough. I cannot stress enough how important it is that there are no survivors.

Your car is in berth number two. Follow the GPS to the first waypoint. You’ll meet the lead car there. From there, follow them.

"third," or "second," or "first," or "whatever," tier is a generic and arbitrary term I made up to explain an idol's relative success/market share/popularity/etc.

First tier would be like Ariana Grande, or Lorde, or some other relevant, successful, award winning performer. Also includes people like Madonna or Christina Aguilera or Pink or others who've essentially achieved peak success, but might not be relevant.

Goes down from there. I wouldn't worry about it too much, the idol operations business isn't really relevant to Michelle.

It's pretty fuzzy and arbitrary. It's basically me just asking you to suspend your disbelief for the sake of the quest/story.

Same with idol...in my particular context it's basically "almost every pop performer signed to a recognized "idol," agency that places a lot of stress on non-musical ventures."

They're creating and performing music, but also doing a lot of other stuff too. They're like tiny PR wagons for whoever pays their management the most.

The traditional band/performer is still alive and a well, since it's not like all other genres of music will die out, but Echo City is dominated by idols and their management teams and record labels.

You see a lot of blues still being recorded in Tennessee, a lot of grunge and punk in Cascadia, rock in old Hollywood studios, rap from all over Old America, etc.
>>

>>
>>31075022
So are their blues idols? Punk idols? Rap idols, except for the one true Based God?
>>
>>31075088
I have two interpretations of your question so I'll answer both and hopefully one of them is right:

A) There are idols who are definitely bluesy, or punkish, or rap-esque. The actual rap artists, blues performers, and punk bands aren't super stoked about this. (or whatever genre the idol(s) are coopting)

They feel it destroys the legitimacy of their genre (and they're not wrong)

B) To be an actual "idol," you need to sign with an idol management corp, of which there are a limited number based almost entirely in Echo City.

“Is it normal to hate yourself in this job?”

“Yeah.”

“Oh. Just checking. Why are we doing it again?”

Wendy shrugs. “They pay in cash for these “events.” Sometimes there are bounties, also cash. Girl’s gotta eat.”

She has a point.

Wendy grabs a V-frame breaching charge and quickly installs a grenade launcher to the underside of her rifle. She hands you a 40mm grenade.

“Here. It’s a HESH round. Once the bus is down use it to take out a window, then toss a flashbang in. I’ll hit the breaching charge and hopefully we can just get this over with.”

You can’t see much of her face but she looks disgusted.

“So...this happens often, then?”

“Yep.”

“Cool…”

You install a launcher onto your own rifle, make sure it’s set to SAFE, and load in the round. You grab a pair of flash bangs and secure them to the front of your ballistic vest.

“Take a helmet. Don’t put it on until you hear the action stations call. It’s easier to kill them if you just try to tune out and let your reflexes take over. They’ll call over the comms once they’re happy that the kill’s confirmed.

You can drive.”

>[1/3]
>>
>>31075475

She zips up her jacket over the flashbangs and gets into the passenger seat. You follow her glumly, and get your gear stashed within easy reach.

This job kind of blows.

The car turns over and the GPS comes on.

It’s a slow and roundabout feeling drive as the GPS leads you to all sorts of places in Echo City you’ve never been to or even knew existed. You soak up the lights and ambience of the financial blocks, where all the banks that service the corps are, the residential areas for the richest and slightly less rich, the slums with the graffitied buildings like tattoos.

Eventually you’re routed onto a dual lane expressway. Ten miles later and you’re stopped at a small strip mall with a gas station.

A blacked out SUV flashes its lights at you three times and slowly rolls away.

“That’s the signal. Trail him.”

From the way the lead car’s driving it seems like you’ve got a lot of miles to do, because once you’re back on the road your speed doesn’t drop below sixty five.

Wendy has checked out and is sleeping against a window. Great.

After about a hour heading southbound the lead car slows down, and it’s not all that difficult to tell why. There’s a big tour bus going forty five in the right lane.

You watch as the SUV’s wheels go to full lock and plow itself into the driver’s area.

And...yeah, there’s an explosion. The engine bay of the SUV turns into bright white light and you can see the shockwave blow dust across the asphalt.

The bus doesn’t flip but ends up perpendicular to how it was.

You can see the firewall of the SUV. You wonder what they get paid.

You shake Wendy awake (you were wrong) and she wakes up with a start scrambling for her gun. Both of you get your helmets strapped on.

You maneuver your SUV next to the lead car’s, grab your rifle, and leave the door open.

Time to rock and roll.

>I was wrong, [2/4]

>>31075489
Wendy fires off her HESH at a window and quickly gets to setting the V-charge up as you discharge your grenade into the one next to it.

She counts down on her fingers as both of you look away, and you detonate all three.

Flashbangs in. They burst.

Wendy’s in. Shots fired.

You’re right behind her.

Ok, here's the meat.

I've been generally dissatisfied with how the mechanics worked last combat, and I want to try something that's, basically, better.

In short, I'll be starting with ORE (One Roll Engine, ex: Godlike, Reign, Wild Talents, etc), but probably making some changes to generally be more quest friendly (not entirely sure, this is basically learn on the job for me).

Anyways, it's pretty simple. Everything uses d10s, and you only need to make one roll. That one roll tells you everything you need to know.

It's a Stat+Skill+/-Modifiers, like Unisystem is, but you roll your pile of d10s and look for matches.

A pair of 2s is the most basic form of success. 10 10s is the best success you can ever hope for. These are expressed as 2x1 (pair of 1s) or 10x10 (ten tens) or 3x3 (trips threes) or 2x8 (pair of 8s) or 8x2 (8 2s)

These numbers matter. In combat, the amount of dice you have matching is your damage. The value (1 through 10) determines hit location.

1-2 left arm
3-4 right arm
5 torso
6-7 left leg
8-9 right leg
10 head

Always wear a helmet in ORE. You don't want to get one hit quit because someone got lucky and took your block off. (Sounds familiar, really.)

Combat is really probably the only situation where dice will matter.

Time to rock and roll.

>It's a Stat+Skill+/-Modifiers, like Unisystem is, but you roll your pile of d10s and look for matches.

Ugh. Seems like you'd want more dice than 4, since matches seem kind of unlikely.

I'd be .... kind of in favor of having a Personal Bank. A slot for 1 # to hold, that can be swapped into another # in a roll to make a match.
But as a price, and to make things easy to bookkeep, is -always- swapped in if it would improve things, and maybe optionally if you roll high and want to save it for later

Think of it as Main Character powers, contributing to the Flow of the game, and possibly.
IE we roll a d10 at the start of each session. Get a 1. Keep it around until we roll something, like >>31075640 1 replaces 4, 4 goes into the bank, and we come out ahead with a basic success.
>>
>>31076011
That's built into the system. They're called Hard or Soft (sometimes Hard and Wiggle, depending which game book).

Basically, as a character gets xp, they can promote one of their points in a skill (Say, Rifles 3) to one of the special dice.

A Hard die means that you ALWAYS have a 10 in the pool. a Hard would look like Rifles 2(1H), and you'd roll 2 dice and hope to get a 10.

Soft Dice are more expensive, but can Wiggle (like their alternate name). You have Rifles 2(1W) and you roll your 2d while declaring "I want my Wiggle to be a 6" because you want to hit someone in the chest, or "I want my Wiggle to be a 1" to hit someone in the arm and force them to drop their weapon.

As for probability of success: Rolling 4d10 Michelle has a 50% probability for success.

That's not bad. She'll improve if she lives.

We'll get into xp in another thread.

I think this is the last piece: /tg/ standard of best of 3 rolls.

Chances are this will slightly skew the results in the favor of a success, even at low dicepool values (which I think is fine, really)

Rolled 2, 3, 6 = 11

and here we go!

ORE's a cruel bitch like that. There might not be any critical failures, but there sure will be plenty of regular ones.

On the bright side, if you hit with a gun it's probably a kill, especially on burst/automatic.

>No match

Wendy stalks deeper into the bus, you behind her.

You see nothing.

Wendy fires.

She swears, loudly.

She re-engages less than a second after. Only a brief scream.

Wendy points. A window’s open. “I think we’ve got a problem.”

“Lead car, engage your FLIR and roll. I think we’ve got at least one runner.”

Shit.

The two of you continue sweeping. Wendy kills another man.

That makes four. Might be all of them.

A bathroom door. Locked.

Wendy motions for you to fire through it.

Thank god for these 6.8 SPC rounds.

>Coordination 2 + Rifles 2 + 2d (Hard To Miss Shooting a Door)

Rolled 7, 10 = 17

>>31076213
roll 2d?
>>
Rolled 9, 4, 10, 3, 4, 10 = 40

>>31076213

>>31076263
I think he means roll 6, 2+2+2 dice
>>
>>31076263
>>31076267
Yep.

Coordination (one of your core stats) + Rifles (one of Michelle's core skills) +2d as a situational modifier.

So go ahead and tack on another 4d and you're golden.

As an aside, you guys are adapting super well to the system. I feel pretty good about it.
>>
Rolled 1, 3, 4, 7, 2, 2 = 19

>>31076213
Another roll, though I doubt I'll beat 2 doubles. Or are we only counting highest?
>>
Rolled 5, 5, 9, 7 = 26

>>31076263
Ok, adding 4d.
>>
>>31076302
Having multiple matches in a set (your rolled pool) is important when you're trying to go multiple things in a single action.

We'll cross that bridge if/when we get to it. Probably won't come up a lot (ever) in a quest setting.

>Figuring out rolls/writing.

You shield your face with your prosthetic limb and position your rifle in front of the door and fire into it over and over again.

You hear nothing. Drop mag, stow mag, reload, rechamber.

Tap rack bang. The charging handle is so smooth.

The door is still being stubborn. You apply some extra force from your arm and it opens.

Female. Girl. Teenager. Hole in head. Tears on cheek glisten in the flickering fluorescent light.

The man from earlier talks to you over your comm bead. “KIll confirmed. Keep moving.”

Wendy isn’t smiling as she slaps your back. “Welcome to hell.”

She takes point and kills two more men before calling all clear.

So there were six instead. Good thing Wendy was on point.

The two of you leave the bus wordlessly and start sweeping the cargo storage bays of the bus.

Found one.

Lead car says over the comms, “Hit the runner. Probably broke something. Thirty seconds until return.”

Wendy keeps her gun pointed at the girl while you wait. You count off thirty seconds in your head.

Lead car has good timing. He rolls to a stop and someone pushes a girl from the backseat.

She lands with a thud and a whimper.

Wendy says, “Draw your sidearm, new blood. Finish them.”

>Write in.

Well, you wanted a more edgier Idols quest and you got it. Just shoot her and move on.
>>
>>31076464

>>
>>31076464
Make it quick and painless.

inb4 gun jams, we have to do it by hand.
>>
>>31076527
I couldn't/wouldn't do that.

Not unless everyone was on board with it via a vote.
>>
>>31076535
Dooo ittt. All guns within a 30 meter radius jams, we have to do it by claw.
>>
>>31076547
I can't. I couldn't.

Maybe next time.
>>
>>31076555
You KNOW next time won't have as big an impact. This is her first civilian kill. It's now or never.
>>
>>31076464

“It’s late. I’m exhausted.”

You shoulder your rifle and execute each girl with a shot through the skull.

“Kills confirmed. Get out,” carries over the radio.

The driver of lead car gets out. Male, says “Both of you in the back. Should only take a minute or two.”

You and Wendy clear and safe your weapons and toss them in the trunk with your helmets before climbing into the backseat.

The carpet is making a wet squish sound underneath your feet.

He and his co-driver, also probably male, each grab a black duffel bag out of the trunk and quickly toss the dead idols into the bus’ storage area. They start tossing bricks of...something, all around and in the bus.

They’re quick. One of them triggers their charges. The bus ignites, burning a bright yellow, almost blue.

It’s a long drive. You change cars once before the lead car drops you and Wendy off in the middle of a parking garage with a pair of keys. You both wait until he’s well out of sight and quickly pull off your mask.

The temperature dropped fast. Even in the garage it’s chilly and you can feel the sting as your flushed cheeks exchange heat with the cool air.

You mash the key fob and, thankfully, the car is closer than it is far. Wendy elects you as driver and she crumples into the seat.

“Do you think you can drive me home?”

Pfft. Hardly. These are far from Michelle's first non-com kills.

They're probably her first executions, though. I'm not sure.

Probably not even that. Most debased it gets is that she's not any better than a thug.

I'm not sure if Michelle cares. Depends on what Anons like you think when presented with choice.

We'll see, I suppose.

You sigh and say, “Not like I can say no. Today I am your yes(wo)man.”

Wendy smiles, weakly, gazing at you briefly before focusing on nothing at all out past the window, “Do you want to sleep over? I know you’re homeless and everything. I have a guest room and a bed and a shower you can use.

We can drink until it hurts a little less.”

“Not until doesn’t?”

Wendy focuses back on you, her smile gone. “It always will.”

She enters an address into her phone (she tells you to never, ever use the GPS of a car, company provided or not) and begins navigating for you.

The SUV seems to have taken you even farther south than you were. There’s a long wait at a traffic jam somewhere on the interstate.

You have a guess why.

You pass the still smoking remains of the tour bus. A news crew is broadcasting as fire fighters and uniformed officers stand around.

It’s another long drive.

Wendy lives in an apartment building that you guess is probably twenty, thirty minutes away from the complex. You pull into a numbered stall in between a pair of ordinary looking sedans.

“Thanks. Are you coming?”

well she's not showed feeling anything, and after the last op, she's proven to be a bit of wreck
>>
>>31076684
“Yeah, I’m coming. Thanks to you too.”

You make sure your mask is safely stuffed in a pocket as you take the elevator up.

Wendy shows you to the guest room and lets you use her shampoo and conditioner and gets a soft cotton t-shirt and a pair of athletic shorts for you and lays them on the bed.

It’s the blueberry one, from yesterday.

You sit and cry as the water slowly grows cold. Wendy doesn’t knock.

It’s a long time before you dry off, wrapping your hair in a towel.

You sit in silence, legs folded up under you, as Wendy takes her shower. Her east and westward facing walls are smart glass. West blends in with the south and north walls, but east is clear. You can see the moon.

Wendy comes out, eventually, her hair in a towel too wearing a pink cami and boy shorts. She walks heavily on the hardwood floor and disappears, returning with a large bottle of tequila and two ceramic mugs.

The two of you begin drinking in turns in silence.

END SESSION

Whoowhee, this is the biggest/longest thread yet. Thanks to everyone for making this possible!

I'm sorry if this felt a little try-hard edgemaster. We just arrived into the meat of the quest.

Drop me any comments or concerns or questions or whatever in the thread and I'll answer them while I'm still awake.

Michelle seems rather squeamish about killing for a vet. How much experience does she have in the field? Does she have over 300 confirmed kills?
>>
>>31076814
What the point of the kill confirms again? Were was the company testing us or collecting bounties or somthing?
>>
>>31076876
probably not, but it's possible she knows a SEAL who graduated top of the class who does

As for combat experience. Lots of combat experience, but Michelle is small(ish) and lanky(ish).

She was mostly on patrol. Marines did a majority of the doorkicking, and when the Army did they have their own big boys with big armor.

It was very unusual that contact was ever made at fifty yards. Most of her shooting was at distance. There were a couple of cave clears, and once her prosthetic arm went on she ended up doing a few Charlie in the tunnel scenarios, but by and large her position was never as executor, just returning fire.

She's killed civilians, before. The reports listed them as casualties of war engaged upon by accident to their proximity to REDFOR. All Michelle saw through the sights on the HMG were bodies and the sergeant called weapons free.

A lot of the squeamishness is intense discomfort. Returning fire on patrol in Afghanistan is one thing. Being told you're going to be paid in cash to execute children is something entirely separate...even if those people tried to kill the ones you were protecting.

The attention and popularity an idol gets from surviving an attempt on their life isn't something a corp can allow to happen, which is why they need to be 100% that the kill is confirmed.

Good night darling Anon!

Yeah got admit I liked the premise but this is going a bit too edgemaster for me
Killing combatants is all good, willfully and knowingly killing civilians is something that I think even a soldier should and in most cases from my experience would pause at
It is just one of those things you don't do easily unless you are really unhinged
