It is the Year 22XX, and you are Ivan Parkas Kostov, a High Impact Public Representative of the StrikeOut Corporation. But nobody calls you that. To most people, you’re just another merc. Most of the time you get launched out of a Space Cruiser at high speeds in a pod of metal and toxic gel with the simple orders to fuck shit up as much as possible.

Right now you’re deeply in debt, and are working to alleviate that situation. So far you’ve gone on four missions in your quest to alleviate the burden of debt-slavery.

>Operation Ordinary Rendition
Your first drop, and one of your more successful ones. You got bumped up a pay grade for your performance and kidnapped some Japanese scientists.

>Operation Shattered Moon
Another resounding success, you managed to save dozens of asteroid miners held hostage by the nefarious Limited Liability Solutions, a front organization for organized crime on Earth. You also managed to kill the legendary Jamaican Giant Dreads with the aid of a fellow rookie, Tsukino Noriko.

>Operation Bitter Prophet
A deeply unsettling mission, and your first brush with failure. Sent down to investigate a gene therapy clinic that had gone silent, your squad found a horrific scene of slaughter. The staff dead and the patients horribly mutated, the mission cost you many nights of sleep and an arm. Your squad decided to retreat before they could discover how the clinic came to such a grim fate.

>Operation Idol Bashers
Your most recent drop. Suggested by your well intentioned HR Advisor, Svenja Weiss, this drop was a light and easy battle against the theatric, but ultimately ineffectual, merc-idols of the SpaceHeart*Love Mil-Pop TV show. You have yet to receive your earnings for the mission, but you managed to snag three defeated merc-idols, the Himawari Force, for Basic Training as StrikeOut mercs.

Alright droppies, I’m starting DAQ off a bit differently today. I’d like to preface this by saying that I am not mad or irritated in any way, but you need to know this. Let’s just say that Ivan hasn’t really been acting very… tactically, for want of a better word, during missions. Now I know that a lot of this is because I usually end up stringing together a bunch of anons suggestions when writing up the action sequence. This usually means that individually, the actions are intelligent and “tactical” but once strung together we’re left with something that’s probably less than could be desired. I did not envision the action sequence system working out like this. I thought that anons would be working on full action sequences, and then voting on them, and I would choose the most popular completed action sequence. This hasn’t really happened. Much of this is my fault for not making it clearer to you guys.

Ideally, I’d like to see you guys present me with a full action sequence, rather than a bunch of individual actions to chain together for you from different people. For example, this is a rough approximation of what I’d like to see:

>Ivan moves to cover behind nearest pillar
>Provides covering fire with his AR while Cy moves to a pillar nearer the enemy
>Working in tandem with Cy, Ivan pins down the enemy forces while Elda moves to a flanking position
>Elda uses her sniper rifle to flush the enemy forces out of cover
>When the enemy forces begin to fall back, hopefully in disarray, Ivan charges them
>Ivan does some melee attacks.

Obviously, you can still write in cool melee attacks, and there will still be room for badass craziness and plans that are more awesome than smart. However, the reason I’m bringing this up is that the next mission will be the Stock Exchange Attack with Niels and Elda. You will learn more about the mission later in this thread, and will be making some decisions pertaining to it. The stock exchange attack, called Operation Capital Shock, will be your hardest mission yet. It won’t be a slog like Bitter Prophet, but you will be facing much tougher foes than previous threads. Ivan will need to be either smart or lucky in order for this mission to end without any fatalities. Since luck isn’t really our forte on missions, it means Ivan will have to be smart. I hope I’m not being a dick here, but the way the attacks are planned is going to have to change if you want this mission to go well. For my part, I’ll try to give you guys more information to work with so that you’ll have everything you’ll need to make tactically sound decisions.

I’m starting the thread with this so that everyone will see this notification. I will also be fielding questions and discussion about this for like the next 30 to 35 minutes before we get on with the thread.

well fuck, i know we can't count on Teejee dice at all.

Time to git gud or die tryin
>>
>each anon suggesting a whole action sequence
>discussion about action sequences
>possible merging of various action sequences, finalizing them
>voting on final action sequence

I have a feeling this will hog down combat to somewhere between snail pace and frozen turd Fall Guy.

And don't tell me you will try to speed it up.
If you do, it will end up being the exact same clusterfuck it is now.

I do not know how to get around this all though.

The system also feels a bit untransparent to me as a whole.
After we roll, you often end up writing something completely different due to the fact we failed one check, which fucks up the tactic we created.
>>
>>31104397
Indeed, we're gonna have to go MAXIMUM OPERATOR for this one.

making the players do some of the chain-collating work is a good step, but couldn't you just...instead of throwing all the actions everyone wants into one big blob, group them by style/intent, and then vote on which to use?

Add an intermediary confirmation/end-of-suggestion step to finalize the plan, instead of just throwing everything into one big melting pot of tacti-fail.

Another thing.
We're goddamn CQC.
When you put is in an open hallway or a giant room, our whole tactics go down the toilet.

We need to train our assault rifle HARD before this mission.

I'd like to second this.
I've been criticizing the system here, but I like your quest as a whole very very much.
>>
>>31104497
I'm thinking action chains on the whole will become shorter, perhaps only three to four actions, and in turn updates will be faster as I will have less to write.

As you said, the current system is a bit murky, since one failure has the potential to invalidate the entire Plan of Attack.

>>31104525
>Vote on style/intent followed by final vote

Yes, that's how the system would ideally work out.

>>31104604
Thank you anon

>>31104607
Yes, that has been a problem. I'll try to make sure the missions take place in a more cramped environment to enable CQC tactics.

I'm also working on some gear Ivan can pick up that should help with the entire no cover, long distance, issue.
>>
>>31104206
You are a good guy fallguy. I just hope this doesn't discourage people from posting, since coming up with full sequences seems tougher than just tossing out an idea or 2.
>>
>>31104682
I want an extendable shield anchored to your revolver arm, which can be pulled out whenever [in pulled in form, it covers our arm]. It also hides our hand, but as it is on our arm, we can hold the revolver, tomahawk and shield all at once.
Anyone else who can imagine this?
>>
>>31104691
Riot shield?

Also you are one of the better QM's that i've seen
>>
>>31104774
One suggestion I've heard is that anons can toss out an individual idea or two, and have other anons collate those suggestions into an action plan.

Since Action Sequences will be shorter form here on out, I hope that this will make it more accessible for anons to make suggestions.

Don't do this.
The enviroment should not revolve around us, we should work around it.
Just give us options, even if they are not visible at first.
> perhaps only three to four actions
I like it.
>>31104774
I don't think so.
We might have less sequences that are overall more consistent.
Also it the prompt is to write them shorter in general, that helps a lot as well.
>>
>>31104691
Fall Guy, have you taken a look at the quest archives? 'cause you are easily the best QM I've had the pleasure of catching up with.
Also, a riot shield would go a long way in making CQC viable for us.

Suggestion:

To alleviate the "1 bad roll = entire sequence fails" problem, would it be possible to just have 1 roll (pick the best out of the first 3 or something) determine how well the entire sequence goes?

Meanwhile, if the 1st 3 rolls are all bad (i.e. Ivan's gonna fail), you, Fall Guy, can pick which action in the sequene fails and how, which gives you better control over the pacing of the action. So for example...

Action sequence: 1) Flip over table and use it as cover, 2) Take potshots from over the table to suppress the enemy, 3) throw a flashbang, 4) charge in and axe some dudes

Player rolls are: 15, 12, 6 (so shitty rolls)

From there, you can pick how the sequence fails. Maybe Ivan trips as he tries to go for the table; maybe Ivan flips the table, but as he's peeking out of cover to suppress he gets winged; maybe he misses with the flashbang; maybe he does everything perfect but he drops his axe right as he's about to fuck someone up. The choice is up to you, which again gives you better control over the pacing and the plot.

As it is, it's way to easy to fuck up on the rolls, since we not only have to roll well, we have to roll well 3 to 6 times in a row.
>>
>>31104829
>http://pastebin.com/bkfhSERL
Oh yeah.

I don't see the folded riot shield impairing our two-handed weapons capability though.
Not in its folded state at the very least.
>an individual idea or two, and have other anons collate
I rather like the other idea of shorter action sequences in general, which would shorten the combat posts as well.
>>
>>31104829
>>31104852

Shorter sequences are probably a good idea. I do really like the action chain mechanic when it works but so often it seems we get a few crap rolls that sorta fuck longer chains.
>>
>>31104691
>>Vote on style/intent followed by final vote
>Yes, that's how the system would ideally work out.

Also, you could put a limit on the size of the action chain - this could vary from situation to situation, increase if we have surprise, or be lower if we have to react FAST.

having limited space to work with seems like it would naturally force out weaker/spammier/less tactical suggestions from taking up space.

Alright, keep it up with the ideas and feedback anons. I'm working on the first post of the thread, should be up soonish.
>>
>>31104950
I agree with this, and I wanted to add:

We chose possibly the most inconvenient fighting type without a ton of mods to have in your world, dude. You can say whatever you want, but there's a reason people don't use sabers anymore in war situations, and only have a knife at most.

Revolver? Sure, but it's not exactly a solid assault weapon. It's a retreat weapon, or at best, a snipe weapon as you move into range.

The riot shield is a cool idea, but honestly, it should have been a part of the CQC kit, because without it, low level CQC is quite damn near impossible unless, like you said, you design the entire encounter around our needs.

And honestly, I don't want you to do that, that feels cheap, and artificial. I want to feel like we beat our foes, not that they were at a disadvantage to begin with ya know?

If this mission is tough enough to warrant an announcement, then we should take a moment to hash out the above anons concerns. Our 'plan of action' thing only works if everything in the plan is coherent. We are anon. We can't always agree on everything, and if things get shitty, some of us will be too afraid to suggest an action because we don't want to be the reason we die.

A suggestion for determining sequences:

Have players add a [tone] tag to each proposed series of action sequences, and then add the details. So for example...

[Tactical] Take potshots to grab their attention, then feign a fighting withdrawl into the room we just left, luring them into Elda and Niels' firing lanes

Or

[Aggressive] Throw a flashbang, charge in with your axe screaming "WRYYYY"

As for how to choose which sequence to go with:

Have Plan of Attack proposals (like the ones above) also count as votes. Rely on tone votes to figure out what we want overall while stitching together something appropriate from the detailed responses.

Example: there are 4 votes.

Vote 1: [tactical] lure them out of the room
Vote 2: [tactical] lure them out of the room
Vote 3: [tactical] get into cover and suppress
Vote 4: [aggressive] charge in and axe

So there are 3 votes for [tactical], 1 vote for [aggressive]. [tactical] wins the tone vote, meaning Ivan will now do something smart and tactical rather than aggressive and reckless.

2 votes for lure them out, 1 vote to suppress, 1 vote to charge in and axe. Ivan will now tactically and methodically lure them out of the room.

Standing in the hallway, you wonder what you should do with yourself and your newfound wealth. Probably take a byte from Cy’s e-book and head on down to the armory to check out the variety of delicious equipment and weapons that are on sale. You haven’t really bought much at all compared to many of your fellow rookies. Hell, at this point you're pretty sure you’ve got the most sparse kit out of all the mercs. Even the financially astute Elda has gone off and bought some pretty expensive smart scope for her rifle.

Just as you’re about to head down to the Armory and put that employee discount to good use, a ping pops up in your HUD. It’s from Niels.

With or CQC Strikeout Package we have 1 level in Assault Rifles which prevents us from having any negative modifiers when we us weapons of the same nature, but no positive modifiers either till levels 2+.

We have two SMGs that we are better with than our rifle and that stack skills with our revolver. Our best bet may be to pawn the rifle and one of the SMGs and spend that money on upgrading the remaining one for more versatile mid-range use in the way of higher velocity ammo and maybe an optic.

Armor is the priority regardless.
>>
>>31105999
SMG is better for our assault weapon. Mostly because it requires a skill we're already trained in. More effective that way.
>>
>>31105845
>>31105885
>>31105910
Seriously though, yeah we should start using SMGs since we get a bonus for using them during combat.

>PDWs
I like the ideas of PDW, pistols and SMGs that fire rifle cartridge rounds/ rounds able to penetrate body armor. FN P90, Heckler & Koch MP7, Knight's Armament Company PDW, VBR-Belgium PDW, and PP-2000 fall under this category.

Oh, good, you're here! I don't know any of those terms, but let's do it.

Way easier then trying to train Assault Rifles up to level 3.

But of course, this all comes after Armor.
>>
>>31106068
>>31106070
Yea, this makes sense I guess. But in this case I think we should pawn the assault rifle, and the two smg's, and then buy a better quality smg.

I can't imagine two random ass guard guns can be all that good, and if I'm going to invest in upgrading something, I want it to be cutting edge.
>>
>>31105845
>Or getting a new AR entirely.

We have armory access+job. We shouldn't buy ANYthing, but we should practice the fuck out of guns there for free/cheap.
Put that Brain Aug that makes us learn fast to use, and THEN buy a good gun with nice features that we like at a discount through strikeout
>>
>>31106107
not quite:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_defense_weapon
put a decent stock and optics on one and it could cover our longer ranges.
>>
>>31106152

Armor first, then Shield, then good SMG.

Good loadout? Good load out.
>>
>>31106081
>>31106107
>>31106169

We should probably get confirmation on what counts as what for gameplay purposes.

I'd figure the handgun skill covers weapons meant to be fired from one or both hands unsupported, whereas anything with a stock is likely encroaching on rifle skill territory even if it doesn't fit the usual rifle category.

You snort and cross your arms before replying to Niels.

>Really? Elda’s with you right now? I claim bullshit

A few seconds later Niels responds.

>What? How’d you know? I sent the same message to her, except with your name instead

You begin to walk off to the tram to the Armory while responding to Niels.

>Elda caught valkyrie’s eye. We’ll be lucky if she’s in shape for the mission.

The simple “Oh.” from Niels makes your day, and you burst out laughing. Guy needs to think more before he fibs. He’s almost as bad at it as Cy is. Periodically chuckling, you hop onto the Tram and ride it to the Armory.

After some more unremarkable walking, you finally arrive at the Armory. The products on sale look positively tantalizing, now that you actually have the cash to buy them. Walking through the rows of gear you begin to make some mental notes of weapons and armor that catches your eye.

Your perusal comes to a sudden stop however. There’s a new display in the Armory. A mannequin in some nifty looking armor stands near one of the walls. Your eyes follow the sleek contours of it’s shoulder plates until they settle on the thing the display stand in advertising.

The Armory’s gotten a brand new shipment of Bulwark Shields. Some of the most popular equipment for military professionals who work in environments with more lead in the air than oxygen, these are the best ballistic shields for the credits in the market.

Attempting to control the torrent of drool, you download the display’s catalogue and take a seat, looking over the items that have caught your eye.

Question for the Standard shield:

Would it be possible to have the Armorer lady cut a customized notched in the Standard shield
so that we can use certain two-handed weapons (like ARs and shotguns) one handed? Kind of like this:

Standard (10,000 Credits)
Cold Iron Armor Kit (13,000 Credits)

Maybe the Navarro GDDS-2 (8000 credits)
>>
>>31106268
Ivan could probably do that for himself at this point. It would make the stability of the shield a hell of a lot worse though.

Folding (12,000 Credits)

Than we go into debt buying the smg this anon suggests
>>31106291
>>
>>31106290
Damn.

In that case, I vote for...

Cold Iron Armor Kit
Folding Shield

At some point when we have more credits we should look into reinforcing/putting hexplates on the Folding Shield, but we'll burn that bridge when we get there.

>Folding

>>
>>31106198
I'm thinking a Folding Shield would be for the best, it can't take sustained fire the same way the Standard one can, but it not taking up so much room means we can always have it with us.

And the Cold Iron Armor Kit is a no brainer.

And hold off on grabbing anything else from here until we've browsed through the weapons section.
>>

Yes and No, with most "Assault Rifles", we have a longer barrel, intermediate size cartridge (more than a pistol round less that a battle rifle round), and use of a magazine. Used more for longer ranged engagements usually a range of 300 meters (980ft) roughly 3 football fields if you wanna be like that.

Throughout the quest though, we have not been any combat situation where we were required to engage enemies at that range, so having one and not being trained in using ARs is a waste, when we can use a PDW or SMG.

PDWs are similar to ARs and SMG except they are primarily focused on shortened and used for close quarters but still retain the accuracy, firepower, and penetration of a rifle round. But that still applies to most "Assault rifles".

The defining characteristics of a PDW are the higher velocity smaller caliber rounds or full fledge rifle rounds they use, that allow body armor penetration(up to level IIIa boday armor at least). Only problem I see is the price of these guns and the technology in game.
>>
>>31106353
I figure, we can use the shield in combination with suppression tactics to make melee more viable. Like...

Niels/Elda suppress the enemy so shots coming at you are minimized

Bring up shield to ward off any stray shots that come at you

Axe them

So use the shield more as a safety net than a tool to let us tank everything
>>
>>31106198
> Cold Iron Armor Kit (13,000 Credits)
> Thunder Thump 9000 (6,000 Credits)
>> Seismic Upgrade (3,000 Credits)
> Folding Bulwark Shield (12,000 Credits)

Comes out to 34,000 without discount, 31,600 with 10% discount if it is applicable which would leave us with 3,929 or 6,329 credits depending.

The Folding and Cold Iron are givens, I suggest Thunder Thump because it would give us a really good melee backup in the case we lose our axe as well as a silent takedown option and also could be a powerful double attack with it that could easily topple a BART operator with a Seismic upgrade.
>>
>>31106442
I like this.

Can we buy a single hexplate for the shield though, just in case a missile comes at us? is that possible?
>>
>>31106419
>Only problem I see is the price of these guns and the technology in game.

And the potential for the 'short rifles don't get handgun skill bonuses' ruling, which would make the whole thing somewhat purpose defeating.
>>

The shield is good idea, it allows for new tactics, portable cover, and more defense. With the sheid we can still use our pistols, revolvers, and 1 handed SMGs to full effect still.

We could also add more mods to the shield light flood lights/ tactical lights to flash on and off and disorientate enemies or leave shield to distract while we flank the enemy.

We should take the folding one though, to retain mobility, because being able to move around a battle field during a gun fight is crucial.

You decide on the Bulwark Folding Ballistic Shield, the Cold Iron Armor Kit, and the Ranged Engagement Pack for the OMP. You look at the Hexplate Bulwark wistfully. You’re pretty sure you could’ve made some magic happen with that thing and the piezoelectric converter, but the damn thing is too fucking expensive. Pleased that you probably won’t be dying any time soon with your upgraded kit you walk up to the Armorer’s desk and lean on the countertop expectantly.

The Armorer pretends to ignore you for a few seconds but eventually sighs and puts away the book she’s reading. Yep, definitely something about dragons and fucking. Choosing to not comment on your boss’ choice in literature you wait while she rings up your orders.

“Alright, so all told that’s 29,000 credits,” the Armorer pauses and glances at you from behind her terminal screen before sighing. “But for my number one employee, I guess it’ll only be 26,100.”

You grin. Ten percent isn’t half bad. And since you have free reign of her work station in the back, you really think you’re coming out ahead on this one. You quickly pay for your various bits of gear while the Armorer orders a bot to dig them up out of inventory.

I'm kinda confused too.

Got it from a scraped weapon while working in the armory.

Chain Axe.
>>

Seems like it would get fucked up 1st time we used the seismic driver or whatever it is called.

Unless we figure out a way to rig it so that we have basically Power chain axe.

>>31107563
Not if we make the TEETH seismic drives.

Guys, if we get the chainaxe, then what's gonna happen to the seismic thingy? It may not activate. Just something to consider if you're taking that seriously

I say we go into dept and get the darts with tranqs too, we already paid heavily to not having a ranged tranquilyzing wepon before....and if next mission goes well debt wont be a problem

NIGGER, DI THE SECOND QUOTE SAY CHAIN AXE?????

ATTACH THAT FUCKER TO THE HILT.

>>31107315
Actually how much would something like that be worth? We don't actually need it since our current melee kit is pretty brutal already.

Could we just sell it?

No we are putting it on the OMP. and she dosen't want it we got it from the scrap pile here anyway

IDK man SMG with a chain bayonet? Just seems kinda weird. Could work I suppose...

guys, guys....can we please get the tranq dart weapon? prety please?

“Hey look at the bright side,” you say with a grin. “Maybe someday I’ll know enough so that you can take a day off every once in a while.”

The Armorer shakes her head and snorts. “Maybe if you live long enough. Still, most of the time it’s just sitting in place and trying not to fall asleep.”

You cock your head. “If this is so boring for you, then why do it?”

The Armorer raises an eyebrow. “You’ve seen what I’ve got stashed in the back. Who in their right minds wouldn’t want enough guns and gear to start her own militia? I’m doing this cause I love my inventory.”

You nod. Makes sense. Even working in the same room as some of the stuff she has is pretty thrilling. “Makes sense. So I got a question. You were a merc in the early days right? What was that like.”

The Armorer scowls. “Shitty. We were almost wiped out on more than one occasion,” The Armorer leans back in her chair and sighs before looking up at you with a wolfish smile on her face. “But I guess that made our comeback all the sweeter.”

The Armorer laughs mirthlessly. “I remember this one drop. It was against a merc company that had been hounding us for a while. Always timed their drops for when we were switching shifts. Unprepared. From what I heard they liked to use us as target practice for their new mercs. Miranda launched my pod right into the middle of their mess hall, breached the place and vented the entire room.”

The Armorer start laughing, this time genuinely. “I was lucky. I only just got a vacuum capable kit a day before. When I confronted her about it, she just shrugged and said she clearly needed some target practice.”

>How do you respond?

Not that guy, but if stealth is a major thing this mission, having a weapon that can place listening devices, video cameras, motion sensors, fire knock-out darts or EMP darts could be crazy fuckin' useful. It is why I was pushing for the Thunder Thump with >>31106442 but posted too late. Having a stealth weapon seems pretty key seeing everything we specialize in is loud and proud (Seismic Axe and Revolver).

>>
>>31107800
I can agree with the silenced and ranged, but non-lethal is a maybe for me. To be honest if we want to be sneaky and non-lethal, we should just work on our own skills on becoming sneaky and just try to avoid engaging the enemy if we plan on ninja-ing about.

>>31107822
Like Splinter Cell? Sticky Camera Launcher, and such. Again it's nice but, we don't really have the skill for it, we could pitch the idea to one of our more sneakier merc buddies and have them use it, they could probably do a better job at it that us anyway.
>>
>>31107822
>>31107852

Let's buy the darts while we can!
>>
>>31107931

we are the tech man, there is no one better at this mission in dealing with cameras, motions sensors and listening devices. If we go guns blazing everywhere with a sniper and fucking Neils things will end badly
>>
Its me (>>31107924). I don't support the darts now, but later we could get some.
>>
>>31107822
I can support darts now. If it's ever gonna matter a lot, now would be the time.
>>
>>31107998

Why later if the things only cost 8k, can prove mighty useful in the next mission and the next mission was specificaly planned to net us A LOT of money?
>>
>>31107931
Like >>31107990 said, Ivan is good with hardware and darts don't have a crazy range anyway. If anything, it'd be inserting a camera/mic/sensor or a scrambler thing right up close or from a few feet away.
>>
>>31107990
Ok, we can monitor the cameras, sensors, and audio devices but if someone is better at being sneaky and shit, let them be the one shooting the launcher and placing cameras and we provide support and work the equipment.

We really should make the investment NOW before we're in the shit and then realize 'ohhhh shit we probably shoulda gotten it.' We have the money, let's just get it before it is too late.

You chuckle along with the Armorer. Bastards had it coming. Who the fuck drops on another merc company unless they’re getting paid for it? What a dick move. “Such is the life of a merc. Although I bet they didn’t appreciate the irony or whatever it is.”

The Armorer nods. “Probably not. Oh hey. Your gear is here,” she turns around and takes the duffle bag from the bot. “Here, keep the bag. It’s my gift to you.”

You accept the duffle bag with a thanks and take your leave of the Armory. You’ll be back later to get your equipment set up. But not right now. You’ve got another ping from Niels to deal with first.

>Hey Ivan. Elda’s actually here now. I’d really like to talk about the mission now.

You wait a second before pinging Elda.

>You actually there?

Elda responds immediately

>Yes. And we need your input on something.

>Really? You want my input? Somebody send Satan a parka.

>Of course we do. That way we know what plan has the cretino’s seal of approval.

Somewhat surprised that a session with the Valkyrie failed to shake up her usual acerbic attitude you make your way to Niels’ apartment. Knocking on the door, you wait for Niels to invite you in. After a few seconds, during which you’re sure you’re being watched, the door opens and Niels ushers you inside.

You see that Elda in sitting at one side of the table. She looks like her normal self, although her hair is a little messy.

>What say Ivan?
>>
>>31108209
Don't mention Valkyrie at all. She never really brought it up with Ivan, so I'm guessing she doesn't want Ivan to either.

"Alright, so what's this I hear about my input being needed? You've got me curious."

Keep it classy and on-subject, leave well enough alone about her and Val. No reason to talk about it unless she brings it up.
>>
>>31108209

Elda, I see that spending time with Val failed to make you even a bit more pleasant.

Probably be a bad idea to say that, especially if (by some chance) Elda decided to actually turn down Val because she thought of us.

Joke about it if she brings it up, but otherwise, a bad idea to just throw out there, I think.

Considering the weirdness we ran into with Elda already, I'd almost bet it wasn't quite as smooth sailing for Val either.

I personally see Elda as a minefield of emotions, I'd be very careful about what we say if we're serious about her. Too easy for us to mess up unless she brings up certain subjects, and relationships are apparently one of them.

Regardless, we're here to talk about a mission, not whatever fun she may (or may not) have been having. I think we should avoid saying much of anything on the subject.

Alright, missed out on the shopping vote, but I've got a few questions:

Can Melville's Shortcut act as a grappling hook if we install a more robust pulling mechanism, or are we better off getting something completely different?

Upgrade for Hexplate:
Uses the bullets that hit it to create a steady stream of chaff.
Smart plates-camera on the shield or an interface connected to HUD allows you to reposition the hex plates on the fly.

Axe Upgrades:
Taser Attachment
RWBY/Revengeance style explosion-propelled swings

Stability Spikes
Mini-piledrivers equipped on the boots allows recoil to be greatly decreased and basically become a wall when used with the shield.
A bit heavy to carry around though.

“Alright. No time to fuck around. Niels, what’s going on with this mission? You’ve got more info for us? Any new developments?”

You take a seat on Niels’ bed, clapping your hands together. “C’mon, let’s get to business.”

Niels glances at Elda before nodding vigorously. “Yes. Right. There a whole bunch of new information available on the mission that’s been uploaded to the HR databases. The Mission is called Operation Capital Shock. Apparently the contracting corp is Steadfast Mutual.”

Your brow furrows. “What would a mutual fund want with StrikeOut? That makes no sense. Who are these Steadfast guys?”

Elda nods, giving you a suspicious look in spite of her agreement. “Steadfast is the biggest mutual fund in the Xuanzang sector. They’re responsible for the investment of hundreds of billions of credits for everyone and everything in there. But I’m with Ivan. I don’t see why they’d need us.”

Niels begins to pace around the room, hands clapped behind his back. “Apparently there was a confidence breach in the upper echelons of Steadfast’s management. Their internal affairs wing discovered that a whole bunch of their C-level officers were in cahoots with Limited Liability Solutions.”
>>
You scratch your chin. “The Terran crime front?”

Niels nods grimly. “The very same. Apparently LLS set up a bunch of shell corporations for Steadfast to invest in. Then the corps will fold and the execs and LLS will run off with billions of credits.”

Elda grimaces. “Typical. Traitorous stronzi. Which wing of LLS is responsible for this?s”

Niels continues pacing. “Steadfast’s IA thinks that the Triads are responsible.”

Niels is too busy speaking, but you notice. Elda breaths a sigh of relief upon hearing it’s the Triads. You’d ponder what that could mean, but Niels is saying some important shit. “So anyway, Steadfast’s IA picked up on this just in time. The shell corporations have yet to liquify the invested credits. So Steadfast wants StrikeOut to attack and destroy the Xuanzang sector’s Stock exchange server farm. They’ve tampered with Reyumbi’s backup of the server so the trades never happened and all those credits are still free floating. That’s the window of opportunity we need to make our own alterations to the Xuanzang stock exchange. Upload our little hack and start some insider trading.”

Agree with this, we need to get a complete rundown, this is going to be serious business.

I don't think we'll be fighting criminals at first here, LLS doesn't operate the stock exchange. Likely high-end corpsec, robots, deadly security systems, and other hired guns like ourselves (hired by the exchange). If LLS is there waiting for us we have an internal security breach. They may show up during the mission of course, watch out for poorly fired drop pods.

“Well I’ve got one immediately important question,” you say, crossing your arms. “What’s the opposition?”

Niels grimaces as well. “Bad. Very bad. Reyumbi Corp is responsible for running the Xuanzang SE server farm. They’ve got the elite of their security division guarding the place. These guys are supposed to be some of the best there is in outer ring Human Space. Heavily armed and highly trained. They only have normal guns though. No mechs or high explosives or railguns. Don’t want to run the risk of damaging the servers. There might be Combots there though. Reyumbi does not want to lose it’s contract to run the Xuanzang SE.”

“I have a more meta question,” asks Elda, “Why doesn’t Steadfast just tell Reyumbi to cancel the trades?”

Niels sighs, finally sitting down next to you on the bed, nervous energy spent for now. “Stupid reason. They don’t want to lose customer confidence. Take care of all this quietly.”

“Blowing up a server farm is hardly quiet,” you snort.

“True,” responds Elda, “But it probably won’t be traced back to them. And that’s all that matters.”
>>
>>31109099
>>31109108
Seconding these.
>>
“So are we actually going to be in a server farm?” you ask.

Niels smiles wistfully. “One of the biggest in the outer ring. Yeah.”

You sigh and roll your eyes. “Don’t feel so bad Niels. I’m sure their server cables aren’t neatly organized.”

As Niels shudders with disgust. Elda leans forward. “That brings us to our next question. And what we wanted your input for Ivan. We’ve worked out a short list for a fourth person to drop with us, but we wanted you to be here before we chose anyone.”

Elda hands you a paper covered in neat, prim, cursive. She’s got great handwriting. Niels’
chicken scratch looks even more appalling next to her script.

>Markos: Great medic. Really great medic. And against elite's like Reyumbi's Server Guard, we might really need his skills. Also his shotgun might come in handy in the cramped quarters of the server farm.

>Cy: Considering the opposition we might run in to, Cy’s heavy weaponry could be a decisive edge over the comparatively lightly armed Reyumbi Sec forces.

>Clayton: He isn’t a fellow rookie, but his leadership abilities could be a serious asset against the Reyumbi sec forces. Besides, I’m pretty sure his comm suite includes a signal jammer, so that might be a nice insurance against any flanking maneuvers.

>>31109646

Well I keep asking questions and the plot train is just rolling on. We have two objectives here, destroy the server farm (actual objective) and line our own pockets (secondary). I asked earlier if Niels needed to do something physical to the servers to complete our modification, I assume that is the case. However, when it comes to the actual objective, what are we going to do? Shoot up all the servers? Smash with axe? As attractive as those options may be, they are neither efficient or safe. Can't we just fry them with an EMP? Are we going to level the whole building with a bomb?

Push comes to shove I'm willing to concede that these things may not occur to Ivan, but this is going to be a fucking disaster, man.

>>31109486

My vote is for Markos, we'll likely be needing his services, and his shotgun will be handy.

Cy would be great, but in the cramped server farm areas, it might be hard to make full use of his weaponry.

Clayton was a serious consideration, I suppose it might be a coinflip between him and Markos.

Tsukino would be really handy, except she might actually be a distraction to Niels on such a stressful mission. Other than that, I'd actually be fine with her as well.

In Shattered Moon, the Corp gave us some helpful specialist equipment, the det cores. I'm sure Steadfast will do the same for us.

Also can we get a loadout of the rest of our team?

I actually believe the person who turned her into an emotional minefield (her last relationship) is part of, or in, the SPEHSS MAFIA. That's why she was a little worried, and asked for specifics.

>Also, who is your favorite waifu? Have I defiled her yet?

Tsukino! Unfortunately, you gave her to Niels. Time for some NTR, baby!

Although more realistically, I'm hoping for a nice mentor/student relationship with Thundertits or the girl that got drunk with us, and see where it goes from there. While they are younger, I actually think they might be a more stable relationship for us compared to Elda.

“Markos,” you say firmly. “I don’t want to bleed out and die. Markos.”

Elda looks mildly offended. “I’m a medic too you know!”

You give Elda a look. It’s a mix of exasperation, irritation, and amusement. “And if you’ve been knocked unconscious and were bleeding out, would you want my tender ministrations? Or the trained professional?”

Elda’s ears turn a little pink and she scowls. “I suppose you have a point. The man is still a pig.”

Niels looks like he’s about to disagree, but it dies in his throat. “Yeah,” he sighs, “But Markos is a good guy. Just a bit… crude.”

You nod in agreement with Niels. “Besides we could use that shotgun. It’s a nice intermediate between my axe and Niels’ AR at close range.”

Elda finally concede to your points. “Fine fine. I would have preferred Clayton. He seems to know what’s going on when lead’s in the air.”

You nod. “Yeah. It was a close call for me, but I’d prefer dropping with a guy who can stitch me back together. Since I tend to need that.”

Elda sighs and agrees. “Alright then. Is there anything else we need to figure out here?”

>Is there?
>>
>>31110318
I suspect it's because Elda is afraid of emotional attachment/affection, but not necessarily physical intimacy. She's fine with a friendly fuck, but it's the emotional commitment that gets to her.

Her freaking out about getting her hand grabbed was less "I hate being touched" and more "Ivan touched her at a moment when she felt extremely vulnerable and uncomfortable".

I will be as explicit about this as possible. I do not like the idea that a girl is automatically disqualified from being a romance-able character in a quest by simply having a sexual history. I don't much care for seeing quests derailed, players arguing, and things falling apart because of "waifus". I do not actually like the concept of waifus very much at all. At least the concept as it appears in /tg/. Does this mean I won't allow my players to pursue or express any romantic interest in the quest? No. I'm actually very gratified that people are interested in the romantic subplots of some of my characters.

I'd like for there to be a smidge of romance in DAQ. This is a Space Opera, and what good Opera doesn't have a bit of that? But I will not tolerate seeing my players rip each other to pieces over some poorly written female characters. That's why I don't like waifus. I don't like seeing my players rip each other apart and go all toxic over some imaginary girls. You can prefer a character as a romantic interest. To me the term waifu comes along with a whole lot of baggage and potential shitstorms.

Was Elda's behavior odd? Not really, but that's from a QM perspective. From your perspective and Ivan's it certainly was. Hopefully when you learn a bit more about her it will make more sense.

What was the point of that scene? To yank on people's chains. That was about the extent of it.

Apologies to the anons I quoted. This isn't really directed at you in particular, but I used your posts as a jumping off point. Nothing personal.
>>
>>31110488
>Too bad she's so unpleasant and caustic that waifuing her would be a bad idea.
Only until that dam of her emotional issues is brought down, thats the main thing thats holding her character up at this moment, we get past that, and she becomes a much better character to be around and in relationship with.

>>
>>31110600
>terms like LI's are much better and don't carry such baggage

That's splitting hairs, to be honest.

Whether it's a waifu or a love interest, you're dealing with the same thing - anons will support their favorite, and depending on how the QM portrays them, it can cause problems.

My issue is that while Elda very well may have reason to act as she does, she has been made to act terribly caustic and annoying to the point where it's hard to keep any interest in her beyond fellow merc.

Truthfully, I doubt very much that anon has an issue with Elda sleeping with anyone else. I know I'm not stuck on us having some virginal waifu/love interest.

I think the big issue is she's reacted badly to Ivan, then patches things up and indicates at least interest in him...

...but then (yes, deliberately to yank our chains) shows up with Val's tongue down her throat, so to speak. Not exactly a great way to make us like her, especially since she didn't bother to drop us a ping or anything.

I'd personally rather just see us stay her friend and nothing more, purely due to her emotional issues, and having nothing to do with the Val scene.

>I do not like the idea that a girl is automatically disqualified from being a romance-able character in a quest by simply having a sexual history

I don't think any of us are really disqualifying girls based on sexual history. As a whole, we like Val, and she's anything BUT chaste.

That said, don't be surprised when anon spends time with a girl beyond normal work, then gets turned off when she shows up shortly after progress happens in a possibly sexual situation with someone else, and she does nothing immediately to dispel the misunderstanding (if there was one).

You might see all the cards, but it's your choice to present things to us as you do. Try to keep that in mind.

All of that said, you do a great job, so don't see this as me being upset or anything. Nothing of the sort.
>>
>>31110739
Actually, the only think I found inconsistent was how easily we patched things with Elda. That seemed like player appeasement.

That said I don't really understand the Val/Elda complaint. Val's a safe, emotional commitment free lay and in general almost a force of nature more than a person once she sets her mind to things. That's entirely different than lowering what are clearly highly evolved defense mechanisms to have vulnerable around someone that seems to care about you and not just physically mutual gratification.

That said, Elda is more a friend than a love interest in my mind, so I don't really have skin in this game, I just don't see haw the situation's toxic.
>>
>>31110860
>>31110885
Both of you are pretty much spot on.

For me, Elda's a love interest because I'm genuinely liking her character and I see in her a very good partner for Ivan, sexually and non-sexually. Of course Valkyrie is going to be involved one way or another as she is want to do, so why not have her as a form of koolaidman mistress too?
>>
I think the "Waifu Wars" will only get far worse if those three anime trope characters come into the story. The only way I see to prevent that shitstorm is to have them all wash out of training.
>>
>>31110951
>Val is Koolaidman Mistress
Oh gooood my sides hurt.
>>
>>31110885
>was how easily we patched things with Elda.

That was due more to the fact that Elda herself admitted she had screwed us over with how she acted, even if we didn't help. She knew we had no way of knowing, and she knew better.

She knew she was unfair to us, and we had been nothing but friendly to her.
>>
>>31110983

>>
FG, please post next update so we can be done with this discussion...
>>
>>31110983
>if those three anime trope characters come into the story

You can make an anime trope out of every damn merc on the Brick, you know. They are all represented.

I'm ok with you not liking the three, but if you are going to remove them on that basis, you may as well deep six every merc we've met so far.

The trick (and I think Fall is doing a decent job of it) is to try and make sure there is more to them than just the one dimension. So far, I think we're making lots of progress toward seeing many of the "trope" characters (like Svenja, or even Val) start to fill out more with interesting quirks or bits of character.
>>
>>31111031
Have you ever heard the phrase "Opposites attract", anon? Same principle there. Ivan's a goofball, so sticking him with a straight man like Elda means things keep on task rather then escalate.
>>
“Not really guys,” you say yawning. “Honestly, I just want to head to bed. It’s getting late.”

Niels checks the time in his e-glasses. “Oh shit. It is getting late. Think I’ll need to turn in soon. I’ve got some work to do for Ifu in the morning.”

You and Elda exit Niels’ apartment waving goodbye to your merc friend. Stepping out into the hallway, you wait a moment before saying anything. “So Elda,” you glance at her through the corners of your eyes. “Niels didn’t notice it, but I did. What’s your connection to LLS?”

Elda looks startled before her expression returns to one of incredulity. “LLS? Why would I know stronzi like those bastards in LLS?”

“Dunno,” you say trying to keep it casual, “Just noticed you looked worried when Niels said LLS was involved. And then you asked which branch of the LLS was involved. Just seemed odd.”

Elda’s mask of incredulity slips somewhat, before sliding off completely. Instead she just seems to be slightly fearful. “Listen Ivan,” she says, a slight note of nervousness slipping into her voice, “it’s nothing you need to worry about. It’s fine.”

Elda seems to be relieved that you didn’t press the issue with her, visibly relaxing. You decide to follow it up with a little joke. “But I am not kissing the space Godfather’s ring.”

Elda laughs a little bit. “Well I certainly hope it doesn’t come to that. If you met the Don you’d probably end up doing an EVA without the tether.”

You chuckle. You didn’t think Elda had the ability to joke. “Alright seriously though. As long as this won’t be a problem, I won’t pry. Thanks for being honest with me, Elda.”

You turn around and walk away from her, down the hallway. Figuring out Elda’s connection to LLS can wait. If you play your cards right, she just might end up telling you herself. At least, that’s what you hope.

Cool. Nice thread man, though really I think you react too strongly to a couple of anons being dickheads to one another.

Not that it wasn't deserved in some ways, but everyone's got their own opinions, so they're bound to disagree in thread. Don't take it to mean we're all 'tearing ourselves apart'. Most of us were staying quiet, thankfully.

>>31111693
Eh. I swear I will never understand what any of that dream sequence crap is. I wish one anon would just sum it up and tell the rest of us what is going on.

Unless anons have something pressing they want to take care of on the Brick, there will be a second visit to the Armory and then Ivan will drop.

Falconion Eye is 7,000 credits.

>>31111769
I probably was over reacting anon. I'm just paranoid after archive diving Psion Quest.

Dear Lord. That was horrifying.

>Summary
Some shadowy, as of yet undefined thread brought the Pear People civilization to its knees (or wiped them out) and now it's headed humanity's way! Or we're about to reinvent it, but probably the former.

But yeah, it's mostly there to let you know things are going to change from sandbox mode to a campaign in Act II, so be aware of that.

>Psion Quest
Sweet jesus man, why? Why would you do that to yourself?

Anyway, you don't need to fear that sort of shit unless you actively cultivate that sort of atmosphere. Most of us here are smart enough to know we're not in route lock territory. Or at least, I fucking hope so.

Well that probably my vote. How much was Bose Audiolocation?
>>
>>31111850
Neat. Thanks man. I can't be assed to try and see into all those layers of symbolism. Way too dumb.

I HOPE we can get some good mods before the world explodes though. And get our friends to survive long enough to get SUPER MODZ too.
Actually...

>>31111832
Yo Fall Guy, our friends gonna get better mods too?
I hope so. I want their survivability to increase with ours.

is there a pastebin with all this in it?

I wanted to see what the ultimate shitstorm looked like. I wasn't prepared for it.

8,500 Credits

>>31111892
Yeah, they've got some mods. Cy, Markos, and Tsukino in particular since they're more front line fighters. Elda and Niels are modded too, but not to the same extent as you four.

>>31111895
There might be, not sure...
>>
>>31111934
You know I gotta admit Fall Guy. I am really jelly of you.
In a lot of ways. I wish I could be half as good as you are in my work.

Keep being a rad dude. You do great work.
>>
>>31112116
Thanks anon, I'll keep trying
